South Suburban College Women’s Soccer Team Claimed the Region Four Championship

The Lady Bulldogs, South Suburban College (SSC) women’s soccer team, has claimed the Region Four championship for the first time in SSC’s history. With a record of 13-3-1, the Lady Bulldogs will advance to the national tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The Lady Bulldogs are the 11th-seeded team and will play Phoenix College, the number two-seeded team, on Monday, November 14, at 2:30 pm central time. On Tuesday, November 15, at 2:30 pm, the Lady Bulldogs will play number seven seed Southeastern Illinois. The winner of the pool play will advance to Friday’s semifinal game. This is the second consecutive year the Lady Bulldogs have qualified for the national tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Jose Gonzalez, who enters his seventh year at the helm and has an overall record of 63-302. Gonzalez stated, “ I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to make history with such a talented group of young ladies that have sacrificed so much to win SSC’s first Region Championship. For many of them, it’s a testament to many years of commitment and dedication to earn this accomplishment.” If you want to learn more or are interested in participating in the women’s soccer program, please get in touch with Coach Gonzalez at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2002. SSC’s main campus is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. The college’s extension site, the Oak Forest Center, is located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue, Oak Forest, Illinois.

Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana Donates

$25K to Boys and Girls Club of Greater Northwest Indiana

Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana presented the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Northwest Indiana a $25,000 check today for their Return 2 Learn Fundraiser that took place in September. Hard Rock matched every dollar donated up to $25,000, doubling the impact of the individual donations, amounting to more than $115,000 raised for the organization.

With the return to school comes the return of after-school programming at the Boys and Girls Club. The support from “Return 2 Learn” provides academic support for Club members throughout the year. The after-school programming enhances the hard work the kids put into their school day by providing daily homework help, free tutoring and mentoring allowing children to become productive, responsible and caring students and members of their communities.

According to President Matt Schuffert, “Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is pleased to provide the much-needed matching funds for the Return 2 Learn campaign in order to assure its success. Giving back is core to the Hard Rock brand.”

Speaking Of Seniors

on a Monday

On Monday morning, November 7, 2022, I got a “good news” message delivered to me. The $3,855 ambulance bill of our client in Cedar Lake went away. Yes, my efforts resulted in saving the client $3,855.

In the previous week, the client met with me. He had a mixed message when he met with me. He had received another bill for $3,855 from the ambulance company. But then, he got a phone call from someone at the ambulance company reporting to him that the ambulance bill was not owed.

So, I phoned and wrote a letter to someone at that ambulance company with whom I had worked in the past. I asked whether the phone call that the bill no longer existed was true. The response was that it was true.

In August, I had reviewed the bill with the client and spotted a problem with the ambulance bill for $3,855. I helped the client file an appeal with Medicare. In that appeal, I attached documents that alerted Medicare to what I believed were errors in how the claim was filed with Medicare by the ambulance company.

Apparently, Medicare agreed with the appeal. The $3,855 ambulance bill went away. Probably, the claim was refiled with

Medicare with the corrections that would cancel the bill to our client. The client thanked me for the work that I did in helping him file the appeal. Why wouldn’t he? I saved him $3,855.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps any client that has a Medicare related medical bill problem without charge. The Medicare system is not perfect. When a problem with a bill threatens to hurt our client financially, we review the bill for free to make sure our client is treated fairly. This demonstrates to all our clients that we really do care about them and appreciate their business. We can’t change Medicare rules for our clients. We just alert others when we believe that they made a mistake so that our client is not hurt.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

What to know about sustainable investing

You may have heard about “sustainable investing.” But if you’re not familiar with it, you may have some questions: What does it involve? Is it right for me? Can I follow a sustainable investing strategy and still get the portfolio performance I need to reach my goals?

Sustainable investing can be defined in different ways, with different terminologies. However, one way to look at a sustainable approach is by thinking of it as investing in a socially conscious way which may involve two broad categories: environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing and valuesbased investing.

As its name suggests, ESG investing incorporates a broad range of environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities, along with traditional financial measures, when making investment decisions. This approach may have a neutral impact on performance because it maintains a focus on managing risk, traditional fundamental analysis and diversification. Here’s a quick look at the ESG elements:

Environmental – Companies may work to reduce carbon emissions, invest in renewable energy, decrease pollution and conserve water resources.

Social – A business may promote gender and pay equality within its workforce, and maintain positive labor relations and safe working conditions for employees.

Governance – Companies distinguished by good governance may institute strong ethics policies, provide transparent financial reporting and set policies to ensure it has an independent, objective board of directors.

You can pursue an ESG investing approach through individual stocks, mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which hold a variety of investments similar to mutual funds, but are generally passively managed – that is, they do little or no trading. As an ESG investor, you don’t necessarily

have to sacrifice performance because ESG investments generally fare about as well as the wider investment universe. Some investments may even gain from the ESG approach. For example, a company that invests in renewable energy may benefit from the move away from fossil fuel sources.

Now, let’s move on to values-based investing. When you follow a values-based approach, you can focus on specific themes where you may choose to include or exclude certain types of investments that align with your personal values.

So, you could refrain from investing in segments of the market, such as tobacco or firearms, or in companies that engage in certain business practices, such as animal testing. On the other hand, you could actively seek out investments that align with your values. For instance, if you’re interested in climate change, you could invest in a mutual fund or ETF that contains companies in the solar or clean energy industries.

One potential limitation of valuesbased investing is that it may decrease the diversification of your portfolio and lead to materially lower returns due to narrowly focused investments, prioritization of nonfinancial goals and too many exclusions.

Ultimately, if you choose to include a sustainable investing approach, you will want – as you do in any investing scenario –to choose those investments that are suitable for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

If sustainable investing interests you, give it some thought – you may find it rewarding to match your money with your beliefs.

Heart Smart

Sometimes I wish life was like a math textbook. As things get harder and I learn new lessons, I wish I could sometimes turn to the back page and make sure my answers were right. And for those questions of life that I don’t know the answers to, maybe I’d find some of those answers in the back of the book as well. Even if I don’t understand why the answer is right, at least I’d have it correct!

Isn’t it tiring to constantly be making decisions? And not only that, but make the right decisions!

I once heard someone say, “If you don’t know what the answer is, if you don’t know what you should do — just be more Christlike.”

That statement is profound, and I think of it often. In the sometimes overwhelming choices we need to make each day, in the hard conversations we don’t want to have, in the relationships we don’t know will survive, in the huge life choices that consume our thoughts, there’s always a right choice to be made — be more like Jesus Christ.

Being more like Jesus Christ will always better equip you — mentally, emotionally, and spiritually — for the choices God places in your life.

Being more Christlike means loving God more than anything else in your life, and making sacrifices for Him. It means valuing the interests of others as more valuable than your own, and letting that evaluation show in everything you do. These Christlike virtues will undoubtedly change the way you live your life, and change the way you evaluate the decisions you need to make.

Each new day comes with new forks in the road. But as frustrating as the constant decisions may seem, each choice comes with a new opportunity: to be more like Jesus Christ.

Cut the Cord

Your emotional attachment to your house can cost you big $$$. Our homes are very personal to us. Thinking of my grandmother’s home brings warm happy feelings, as does my childhood home. And when I move the next time, I’m sure I’ll be emotionally attached to my current home… it’s my wife’s and I first home together, the one where my children learned to walk, talk and write on the walls with permanent markers. But when it comes time to sell, you have to move outside the feelings of your “home” and sell your “house”.

I recently had an experience with a transaction where a divorce was involved and it caused the sellers to literally just walk away from a house that hadn’t been properly cleaned because it was too emotional for either party to do so. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay someone to do a job that you can’t do yourself. I can promise you that if you leave your home clean then new buyers will appreciate it in their offer in the form of cash in your pocket. Otherwise it will come across in their offer in more ways than one. If buyers believe you lived in the home in that condition it’s likely they will believe you neglected to maintain it

as well as clean it. And of course there is the other extreme. The house that is completely your family’s home to the point that buyers cannot even imagine their family “intruding” into your space. You know the one, with the children’s art on the refrigerator, the one with two-dozen family photos in the living room, the one with “Madison’s Room” painted on the bedroom wall, the one with no space at all for a new family. When you get ready to market your home, it should be a house ready for a new family to picture as their own. Pack away those personal items, photos, “collections” and paint the rooms with warm neutral colors. You live in a home, but you sell a house. You have to detach emotionally from your home and view it as a house when you get ready to put it on the market.

With degrees in engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, he was presented with the opportunity to serve as a meteorologist for the Strategic Air Command in the U.S. Air Force during the early years of the Cold War. After three years of guiding U.S. warplanes around the world from a command center in Ohio -- during which time he

also married and started a family -- Roger chose to return to civilian life in Chicago. Engineering jobs at Standard Oil and Amoco Chemical awaited his return from the service, and 10 years later he moved to an engineering management position at Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical in Dolton, Illinois. Roger’s love of climate and weather were always with him, and while in the corporate world, his military forecasting experience led him to fill-in roles on ABC-7 and Channel 9, and eventually to the lead forecaster job at WGN.
