Spring Into Success
NATIONAL NOVEMBER 29 2023 IS CHOCOLATES DAY BBB Tip: A parental guide to safe and efficient holiday shopping from CARU. By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana To ensure a safe and secure online holiday shopping experience, the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) has crafted a set of recommendations for parents and guardians to make informed purchasing decisions this season. Creating a thoughtful shopping list. Every year, major retailers compile their lists of the hottest toys and gifts for the season. However, consumers should approach lists like the “Hottest Toys of 2023” with a critical eye. Stores and online retailers create these lists based on their expectations of what will sell well. What’s important to note is what these lists don’t reveal. For instance, the inclusion of a connected toy on such a list does not imply an endorsement of the toy’s safety or its privacy and data collection practices. To help you select a toy with data collection and privacy practices that align with your comfort level, it’s essential to read the company’s privacy policy. A robust privacy policy should: 1) Clearly outline what information the toy collects from its users, including children. 2) Specify who is responsible for collecting or accessing the gathered data. 3) Describe how this information is stored. 4) Explain the purpose and manner in which this information is used. 5) Detail the parental rights you have in terms of reviewing or removing this information. 6) Depending on the data collected from children, some connected toys may require parental consent before children can use the toy. The simplest way to find apps and connected toys that comply with the federal privacy law, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), is to find a company affiliated with an FTC-approved Safe Harbor program, such as CARU’s COPPA Safe Harbor. If you encounter a website or app displaying the CARU seal, rest assured that its privacy practices adhere to the COPPA Rule. Distinguishing between naughty and nice purchases. Online shopping hinges on the accuracy and accessibility of product information available online. Therefore, it’s crucial to review product details, thoroughly understand how the product works and what is included and learn what you might still need to purchase. Be attentive to accessories that must be purchased separately, such as batteries or clothing for dolls. CARU also recommends you consider the safety and appropriateness of the toy with your child in mind.
We recommend reviewing the product packaging for details and operating specifications that may be inadvertently omitted from the website. Since online depictions of products may not always be clear, many online shoppers find it beneficial to read reviews or watch videos for a closer look. It’s essential to be aware that reviewers, influencers, bloggers, and others might receive compensation or free products in exchange for posting reviews. Part of CARU’s mission is to protect children from deceptive or inappropriate advertising, including product labeling and paid promotional online reviews. Keep an eye out for advertising disclosures and use this as an opportunity to educate your children about potential material connections and how they may affect the credibility of the review. Good things come in age-appropriate packages. Age recommendations may not be as readily apparent when shopping online, so it’s crucial for parents to look closely for them. Toys designed for teenagers might be unsafe for younger children or require adult supervision. Moreover, connected toys meant for older children and teens may collect personal information, such as audio and video, without obtaining parental consent. The companion apps for connected toys may also have unsuitable information privacy and data collection practices for children, including tracking and behavioral advertising, or they may link to sites unsuitable for children, such as social media.. Bah! Humbug! Even in secure payment and transaction environments, purchasing gifts online may expose your personal and financial information to cybercriminals. Be cautious about a website’s security if you plan to share your personal information. You better watch out...While waiting for your special deliveries, be aware that phishing attacks have been on the rise. Exercise caution when opening emails that appear to be from stores or resemble tracking information. Verify the legitimacy of the email addresses before clicking any links. If you feel nervous or suspicious about an email, refrain from clicking on anything within it. Instead, refer to the original order confirmation email or visit the company’s website to check the order status. During the holiday season, it’s also a good practice to monitor your credit card statements for any suspicious activity. For more information and to learn how to protect yourself, Google “BBB 10 Steps to Avoid Scams”. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud. ftc.gov. Your story can help protect consumers from similar scams.

DON’T COMPLAIN ABOUT INTERRUPTIONS by Janice R Newman Unfortunately, plans get interrupted all the time. Sometimes it seems that none of our plans appear to go the way we want. Glitches and unexpected turns seem to put a bolt in the progress of our plans, goals, and aspirations. The promotion we longed for, or the startup financing doesn’t go through seems to stop us in our tracks. However, don’t complain about interruptions. They might be a blessing in disguise that will lead us to consider an alternative path to our plans. Interruptions are typically uninvited, unexpected detours that challenge our carefully crafted plans. Even with calculated planning, disruptions are possible. If our plans don’t correspond with God’s plan, they may not work. Proverbs 16:9 (CEV) states “We make our own plans, but the LORD decides where we go.” Although it’s hard to cope with setbacks and interruptions, the wisdom of the Bible sheds light on why we shouldn’t complain about interruptions and how, instead, we can find comfort in knowing that God’s plan at play is BEST. When interruptions strike, it’s easy to feel frustrated, lost and disheartened. Some disruptions are from the world, from us, or God. Yet, the Bible encourages us to submit our plans to God and to trust in His divine understanding for our lives. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your plans straight.” Think back to times when you couldn’t understand an interruption that appeared to manifest out of nowhere. Reflect on the outcome, such as missing a car accident by moments because of a delay, or you missed out on a promotion only to later get offered a better opportunity. The realization that God’s purpose prevails over our plans opens our eyes to change our perspective. Instead of viewing interruptions as

A Message from The Shopper this Holiday Season The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and reflection. It is a time when families come together, traditions are upheld, and the spirit of giving is in the air. Amidst the hustle and bustle of decorating homes, preparing festive meals, and exchanging gifts, there is a profound and often overlooked aspect of the season—gratefulness. Gratefulness during the holiday season goes beyond the material aspects of the festivities. It is a sentiment that encompasses appreciation for the people in our lives, the experiences we’ve had, and the blessings we’ve received throughout the year. In the midst of the holiday rush, taking a moment to reflect on and express gratitude can enhance the overall meaning and spirit of the season. One of the most significant reasons for gratefulness during the holiday season is the opportunity to reconnect with loved ones. For many, the holidays mean coming together with family and friends, whether near or far. These moments of togetherness are precious, providing a chance to create lasting memories, share laughter, and strengthen the bonds that make life meaningful. Gratitude for the warmth and support of family and friends is a cornerstone of the holiday spirit. Additionally, the holiday season often brings a heightened awareness of the importance of giving back to the community. Many people engage in charitable activities, such as volunteering at local shelters, participating in food drives, or making donations to those in need. Gratefulness takes on a deeper meaning when we recognize our ability to contribute
positively to the well-being of others. The act of giving, whether in time, resources, or kindness, fosters a sense of interconnectedness and compassion that is central to the holiday spirit. Expressing gratitude for the simple pleasures of life is another aspect that makes the holiday season special. The beauty of winter landscapes, the warmth of a crackling fireplace, the aroma of freshly baked treats—these are the small but significant details that can easily be overlooked in the midst of the holiday frenzy. Taking a moment to appreciate these simple joys can cultivate a sense of contentment and mindfulness, allowing individuals to fully immerse themselves in the present moment. Moreover, the holiday season often serves as a time of reflection on the year that has passed. Gratefulness comes into play as individuals acknowledge the challenges they’ve overcome, the personal growth they’ve experienced, and the lessons learned along the way. Even in the face of adversity, the ability to find silver linings and be thankful for the strength gained through difficult times is a powerful source of resilience. In conclusion, gratefulness during the holiday season is a multifaceted and enriching experience. It involves appreciating the people we hold dear, giving back to the community, recognizing the simple joys of life, and reflecting on personal growth. As the festivities unfold, it’s essential to pause and embrace the spirit of gratitude, for it is this mindset that truly captures the essence of the holiday season and fosters a sense of warmth, connection, and fulfillment.
obstacles to block or prevent our progress or daily lives, we can view them as opportunities for growth, redirection, and counsel. Consider Joseph in the Bible as his life is a testament to this truth. His life was interrupted by his brothers’ betrayal and dislike for him. He was sold into captivity and eventually became a steward to Potiphar. Every interruption and trial led Joseph to fulfill God’s greater plan. So sometimes interruptions serve a greater purpose. Trusting in divine wisdom requires us to release our control and submit to God’s control and design for our lives. God’s plans and timing are perfect, and we must learn and accept to be patient by waiting on God’s timing. Plans may take years to manifest, but we must have faith and trust in God’s control, knowing His plans are not to harm us but for our prosperity. Reflect on instances in your life where interruptions and delays led to a better outcome than you could have imagined. Consider Abraham in the Bible. He experienced interruptions and delays in his life, but continued in faith, trusting God’s perfect timing. Abraham waited on God to fulfill the promise to have more descendants than the stars. Sarah, his wife, didn’t wait because she couldn’t understand God’s ways and delays. Her actions to interfere with God’s plan caused division in their family. Trust that God is at work, shaping our experiences for good, to align our lives with His purpose. Interruptions from God are for a high purpose, shall prevail, and guide us toward a destiny that exceeds our expectations, dreams, and plans when we submit to Him. So, next time God interrupts your plan, trust that God is working for your good and not to harm you. Therefore, stop complaining about the interruptions as they can hinder the benefits in the end. Y? The $900 Response Charge WOODROW WILCOX On November 22, 2023, I wrote a letter to a client who lives in Winfield, Indiana. She was charged $900 by an ambulance company despite the fact that she was never taken to a hospital. With some editing to protect her privacy, here is that letter. Your husband brought an ambulance bill to me and asked me to check it for you. The bill was for $900 for a RESPONSE CHARGE. I phoned the ambulance company. I told them that neither you nor your husband called for an ambulance but the store where you were shopping did. I told them that your husband said you fainted but that you were awake and functioning when the ambulance arrived. The ambulance company would not reduce the RESPONSE CHARGE of $900 because the attendants reported “taking your vitals and glucose measurement”. The ambulance companies lobbied Indiana lawmakers for the right to charge the RESPONSE CHARGE in 2022. A contact of mine at the State Capitol reported that no Democrat or Republican in the legislature voted against the special interests of the private ambulance companies. Then, Governor Eric Holcomb signed the bills into law. I remember a few years ago when a private ambulance company came and took

the vitals of my mother at no charge. Private ambulance companies got deals with local governments to provide that service for free in order to get exclusive contracts to give ambulance services in communities. But that is NOT the case anymore. Everyone in Indiana is threatened by this. You could be somewhere and be tired. If someone near you thinks you look sick, that person could call for an ambulance and you would get a bill. In northwest Indiana, it is common to get a $900 RESPONSE CHARGE bill even if you are not ill and never called for an ambulance. This terrible result was caused by no Democrats or Republicans in the Indiana legislature being smart enough to see through the pitch made by lobbyists for ambulance companies. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that firm save over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare billing system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA The beloved season of advent is about to start, when people around the world will contemplate God’s becoming a man and coming to earth. It would have seemed odd to the people of Jesus’ day that God’s angel Gabriel came to Nazareth. Though famous now, when Gabriel appeared to Mary, the isolated village of Nazareth likely had a population of less than 500, and was home to tradespeople and farmers. Jesus’ disciple Nathanael confirms the common perception of Nazareth at the time when he says “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46) It’s not just the where of Gabriel’s appearance that would have seemed odd, it’s also the who. Gabriel appeared to a humble virgin named Mary—most likely a teenager at the time—who was betrothed to Joseph, who although he was of David’s lineage, made a less-than-luxurious living as a carpenter. In other words, Gabriel appears in an ordinary place to ordinary people. But his message was far from ordinary. Mary is told she is God’s “favored one,” and has a reasonable response: confusion. Why would she, the ordinary girl, be favored by God? Then Gabriel brings the salvific bombshell, thousand of years in the making. He tells Mary not only is she favored by God, but she will bear a son whose name is Jesus, which means Yahweh is salvation. Gabriel says He will sit on David’s throne, but where David’s kingdom eventually ended, Jesus’ kingdom is eternal. The final iteration of the most anticipated prophecy in history has now been given to a humble teenager from lowly Nazareth. God has once again proven that his ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55.8), and his plan of salvation for his people is far greater than we could ever imagine. Duckworth praised the many years the wall has been in existence and made recommendations as to continuing the tradition so near and dear to the families of the 12 men who lost their lives in Viet Nam and who are depicted on the wall. Plans are underway to recreate the wall in another medium and return it to the wall as per it exists today. ***

Haven’t been this concerned since the “Bay of Pigs” in the 1960’s. Does anyone remember the bomb shelter’s people were building in their basements in case the Russians came to call—or at least sent long range missiles? We’ve come a long way since the Russians and Nikita Krushchev threatened our shores. Those threats were straightforward (Kruskie -” We will bury you without firing a shot..”) Now it’s all A I and intrigue. All skullduggery, trickery and deceit. Tunnels under hospitals in Israel/Gaza, killer drugs and unsophisticated Millennials, and let’s not forget the young men and women who don’t feel the military is for them. My late son Spencer Leigh Minton Jr. couldn’t wait to join the ARMY like his DAD Spencer SR did before him. I just pray that the young people of our country pull together enough patriotism to be equal to the task of defending our country from the bad guys—whoever they are. ***

Can you make charitable giving less ‘taxing’? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Once again, it’s the season of generosity. In addition to considering gifts for your loved ones, you might want to think about charitable gifts as well. But what should you know before making gifts to charities? And what impact might these gifts have on your financial and tax situation? First, you may want to create a gift budget by deciding just how much you will give to charitable organizations over the rest of the year. Next, look closely at the groups to whom you wish to contribute. You can find many reputable charities, but some others may be less worthy of your support. One of the red flags of a questionable organization is the amount of money it spends on administrative costs versus the amount that goes to its stated purpose. You can check on the spending patterns of charitable groups, and find other valuable information about them, on the well-regarded Charity Navigator website (charitynavigator.org). Once you’ve established a gift budget and are comfortable with the groups you choose to support, you might turn your thoughts to another key issue connected with charitable giving: tax benefits. A few years ago, changes in the tax laws resulted in a large increase in the standard deduction, which meant that many taxpayers found it more favorable not to itemize — and lost the ability to take charitable deductions. But if you still do itemize, your charitable gifts or contributions to tax-exempt groups — those that qualify as 501(c)(3) organizations — can generally be deducted, up to 60% of your adjusted gross income, although lower limits may apply, depending on the nature of your gift and the organization to which you’re contributing. Other, more long-term avenues also exist that combine charitable giving with potential tax benefits. One such possibility is a donoradvised fund, which allows you to make
an irrevocable charitable contribution and receive an immediate tax deduction. You can give cash, but if you donate appreciated assets, such as stocks, your tax deduction would be the fair market value of the assets, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. Plus, you would not incur the capital gains tax that would otherwise be due upon the sale of these assets. Once you establish a donor-advised fund, you have the flexibility to make charitable gifts over time, and you can contribute to the fund as often as you like. Another possible tax benefit from making charitable contributions could arrive when you start taking required minimum distributions, or RMDs, from some of your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA and 401(k). These RMDs could be sizable — and distributions are counted as taxable income. But by taking what’s called a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), you can move money from a traditional or Roth IRA to a qualified charitable organization, possibly satisfying your RMD, which then may be excluded from your taxable income. You must start taking RMDs at 73 but you can begin making QCDs of up to $100,000 per year as early as age 70½. (This amount will be indexed for inflation after 2023.) Establishing a donor-advised fund and making qualified charitable distributions are significant moves, so you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor first. But if they’re appropriate for your situation, they may help you expand your ability to support the charitable groups whose work you admire. When Grief Invades the Holiday Season: New Book Offers Timeless Message of Hope “You have a large mass in your right temporal lobe.” When these 10 words rocked Judy Smoot’s wellsculpted world, she and her husband, Roy, began a 10-month journey through brain cancer surgeries, treatments, stroke therapy, unexpected and tender moments, fears, anger, and beauty. KENNEBUNK, Maine — It All Belongs: Love, Loss, & Learning to Live Again is an exquisite juxtaposition of perspectives tracing Judy and Roy Smoot’s final four years together. Much more than a book, It All Belongs is an immersive experience that opens a rare window into uncommonly candid end-of-life realities through a soulful mosaic of expressive art, journal entries, poetry, and deeply personal writings. “This is a book to be used,” Roy Smoot explains. “It’s filled with ideas, tools, and examples to help guide individuals and groups in discussing and contemplating their own inevitable journeys of love and grief.” When Judy, a spiritual director who used expressive arts to help others cope with chronic illness, receives the devastating diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme, she must put these spiritual practices to the ultimate test. Because she knew how making art sustained her, Judy continued to paint or draw up until the very end of her life. As Judy lives fully into her own mortality, she models her practices for others. But that’s only half the story. Following Judy’s death, Roy, Judy’s husband and soulmate of nearly 40 years, enters a world he didn’t know existed, a world he didn’t want to know, a world of searing pain, grief, and grace beyond anything he could conceive. It All Belongs invites readers to follow Roy from the raw angst of navigating immediate day-to-day realities to his deep introspection. In constantly journaling through his travels, including a long road trip out west and a spiritual quest in Iona, Scotland, Roy mirrors Judy’s work to find his own path through his
devastating grief. This unique pairing of perspectives offers spiritual tools and healing practices to help readers face end-of-life realities by exploring the beauty, light — and even joy — tucked within even the most tragic of circumstances. It All Belongs encourages readers to listen deeply, explore purposefully, and fully embrace this sacred time. “Hold nothing back in your questions, rantings, thoughts, emotions,” Roy Smoot writes in the book’s introduction. “As this book’s title affirms, everything you feel, think, ask, experience, live through, and release is a sacred part of your journey. It all belongs.” About the Authors JUDY and ROY SMOOT met in college at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio; were married following graduation; and for the next four decades lived and loved in Georgia, Florida, Ohio, and Maine. Roy enjoyed a successful banking career; Judy served as a Wellstreams spiritual director, a Dominican Associate, and an Expressive Arts Florida Institute (EAFI) certified expressive arts therapist. Judy established Always We Begin Again (AWBA), a nonprofit organization to support people with chronic illnesses. Later in life, they made their home at “Sunrise Ridge,” their cottage and retreat center renovated and created in the breathtaking beauty of Ohio’s Hocking Hills. MELINDA FOLSE is a writer, editor, and collaborator on a mission to tell stories that make a difference. She believes this story will strike a meaningful chord in every life it touches. It All Belongs is her eighth book, joining Grandmaster, Dream Catcher, and Lessons Well Learned as her favorite explorations of lives and passions well lived. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Is home ownership no longer a part of the American dream? Answer: To answer this, here is a passage from Fortune magazine: In 2023, the residential real estate market’s headwinds have become headlines. By now, we are all familiar with the toll that higher interest rates, inflation, and economic uncertainty are taking on the sales volume and valuation of houses across America. But for all the analysis, one essential factor is consistently absent: the distinction between a house and a home–and what emotional equity has come to mean for the long-term durability of demand. It is well documented that owning a property is the single most important way to build household wealth. Even before the pandemic-era housing boom that began in 2020, the median homeowner had 40% more household wealth than a renter, according to a 2019 U.S. Survey of Consumer Finances. Between 2016 and 2019, housing wealth was the single biggest contributor to an increase in net worth across all income groups. Nevertheless, for economists and financial experts, a house is, well, a house. It’s an asset with specific physical characteristics that is most often inhabited by a group of related individuals. However, that narrow
description misses the enduring emotional power of a family home. Emotional clout all but guarantees that residential real estate markets will rebound after their recent slump. More than that, pent-up demand will ultimately drive market demand forward as interest rates gradually flatten or ease and the transfer of wealth from baby boomers to millennials continues rapidly. Humans, after all, are hardwired to be territorial creatures: They seek comfort and security by establishing clear boundaries around defined spaces and gathering with others they trust. Unsurprisingly, nine in 10 people believe that owning a home is an integral part of the American Dream. Regardless of how long you have lived in America, owning a home is a cultural rite of passage. Proactively choosing to put down roots is part of the critical transition from individual to committed community member. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. BBB Business Tip: Why responding to your customer reviews matters. By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana In today’s marketplace, online reviews are one of the more crucial components of operating a successful business. According to a survey performed by BrightLocal, 93% of consumers say that online reviews influenced their purchasing decisions. A key differentiator in giving your business a competitive edge is making sure you respond to customer reviews, both negative and positive. Surprisingly, some businesses don’t respond to reviews at all, so by making an effort to reply, you’re already providing your business with an advantage. Recruiting customer reviews. It’s crucial for you to have a formal process for asking customers to share their feedback after a transaction is complete. Otherwise, the few reviews you do receive will be from upset customers. Encourage everyone to submit a review, that way you garner a wide range of sentiments, which can directly influence feelings of legitimacy. For example, some potential customers may view too many perfect five-star reviews as a red flag. Customers want authenticity. Whether you choose to send a followup message using email or SMS, make sure it’s delivered promptly after the customer’s interaction with your business. Try to keep the messaging short without sacrificing warmth or sincerity and encourage details. If you’re able to purchase a service to help you collect more reviews, it’ll automate the process for you and send friendly reminders. How to respond to online reviews. Even the best businesses receive negative reviews on occasion, so don’t be afraid when one is directed at your company. Reviews that are critical of your business are a chance to publicly right a customer service wrong. No business is perfect. Negative feedback is an invitation to prove your business prioritizes its customers, even when circumstances are less than ideal. Similarly, don’t forget to respond to positive reviews as well. Those comments should be recognized as feel-good moments for you and the person sharing their experience. Taking time to appreciate a warm exchange with your team can turn a happy reviewer into a loyal customer. If you can, assign one person on your staff to monitor and respond to all reviews posted. Not only will you have someone ready to respond, but your messaging will also be consistent. Try sticking to these tips when responding to customer reviews of their operation: Thank the customer for sharing their opinion while specifically addressing their topic of concern. Be friendly, helpful, and energetic. Offer an initial resolution and then show a sense of
urgency in helping reach a speedy conclusion. Stick to facts and data, not people, personalities, and emotions. Maintain a high level of professionalism, respect, and decorum, while being friendly in tone. Set an expectation for next steps the reviewer can prepare for, including any needed followup. Always leave the response open-ended to allow for any additional action. Take it offline when necessary. Some customers will want to argue and have the exchange displayed for everyone to see. In those instances, provide direct contact information for the customer to follow up. These are some approaches to responding you should avoid: Quoting policy or practice. This is risky because you are setting yourself up for further ridicule. Explaining why you do something is a much better approach. Using canned responses that are not specific to the concern addressed. Other users will read responses every time they read reviews. If they see responses that aren’t addressing the specific situation, they will expect the same. Nobody wants a one-size-fits-all solution. Rambling communication. Reviewers are frustrated as it is, and any long response will feel clouded. This also leaves an opportunity for the reviewer to distort the overall reply. Show empathy, stick to facts, and keep responses simple. How does BBB handle customer reviews? Every customer review of a business that’s submitted through BBB.org is fully vetted by BBB staff to ensure its legitimacy, and that an actual interaction took place between the business and the consumer. Here’s how that happens: • The reviewer is required to provide an email address and then verify their review submission via email. • The reviewer must certify that the review is truthful and accurate. • IPs are tracked and monitored, and users can be prohibited from additional review submissions. • Businesses can challenge the review if they believe there was no interaction with the reviewer. BBB will reach out to the reviewer and request substantiation of the marketplace interaction. • If a customer files a complaint with the same email address about the same issue, the customer review is suspended. Customers cannot submit both a complaint and a negative customer review. To learn more ways to improve your business practices, go to bbb.org and visit the BBB Small Business Resources page. You can also visit BBB.org/get-accredited to learn how to stand out as BBB Accredited business.
