SSC Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Pigatti Recognized by Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame

The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Hall of Fame honored John Pigatti, Head Coach of the South Suburban College (SSC) Bulldogs Basketball Team, as a recipient of the IBCA Men’s College Coach of the Year Award for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II (NJCAA DII). Pigatti was presented with this recognition on Saturday, November 19, 2022, during his fourth home game of the 2022-23 season. The Bulldogs pulled away with an 86-37 victory over the College of Lake County in the Physical Fitness & Athletic Center at the conclusion of the game.

The SSC Men’s Basketball Team, under the direction of Pigatti, are currently on a 7-0 winning streak this season.

“It is quite the honor to be recognized by the IBCA. They are an extremely prestigious organization and to be honored by them is a very humbling,” Pigatti remarked. “I give all the credit to our special players that made a historic run last year. What we did was very special, and to do it by beating every junior college team by double digits except one was even more satisfying. Our team is very proud of what we accomplished last season.”

The 2021-22 SSC Men’s Basketball Team trailblazed their way into history. Not only did they earn the college’s first-ever NJCAA DII National Championship on March 19, 2022, they also achieved the distinction as the first team in NJCAA DII history to go undefeated with a record of 33-0. Shortly thereafter, various accolades poured in as many student-athletes received post-season recognition. This was capped by Pigatti being named NJCAA DII Coach of the Year, followed by a number one ranking in the NJCAA DII pre-season poll to begin the 2022-23 season.

The SSC Men’s Basketball Program has won 40 straight games,

which is the longest winning streak in all of college basketball, regardless of division.

The Bulldogs have also won the most consecutive games in NJCAA DII history.

The next game for the SSC Men’s Basketball Team is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs will tip-off against the Pioneers of Prairie State College in the SSC Physical Fitness & Athletic Center, located on the southwest end of the Main Campus at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Support the Bulldogs and the man who recently led this team to the NJCAA DII National Championship. Questions about the SSC Men’s Basketball Team can be directed to Head Coach John Pigatti at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2524.

Indiana American Water Provides Tips to Properly Dispose of Fats, Oils and Grease

to dissolve grease may pass it down the line and cause problems in other parts of the wastewater system.

Finally, the holidays typically mean more guests in the home and trips to the bathroom. Flushing baby wipes (even those that are labeled flushable or biodegradable) and paper towels down the toilet has become an issue in some areas. Wipes should be tossed in the trash.

backups.

Neither dishwashing detergents nor garbage disposals can properly break down these materials, which build up over time. This buildup of grease can restrict the flow of wastewater, or worse yet, block the homeowners’ or utility’s sewer pipes.

“As many of us are celebrating with family and friends this holiday season and spending more time in the kitchen over the next several weeks, we encourage our customers to be very careful about what they are putting down their drains,” said Indiana American Water President Matt Prine. “FOG can cause costly backups in home drain and sewer systems and also adversely affect the environment if the overflow enters rivers, lakes, and streams.”

The good news is that blockages caused by grease are preventable. Customers can reduce blockages by properly disposing of FOG and not washing it down the drain. Defend your drains and prevent FOG clogs by following these simple tips:

Never pour grease into sinks, toilets, or down drains.

Allow the grease to cool and use a rubber scraper to remove the fat, oil, and grease from cookware, plates, utensils, and cooking surfaces. Then place the grease in a sealed container and dispose of it in the trash.

Install baskets/strainers in the sink drain to catch food scraps and empty them into the garbage.

Please keep in mind that garbage disposals do not prevent grease from washing down the drain. Also, detergents that claim

Jesse White Awards Over $5.6 Million in Adult Literacy Grants

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White awarded over $5.6 million in Adult Literacy Grants to help students develop and enhance their reading, math, writing and English-language skills. “An estimated two million Illinois residents need adult literacy and/ or English-language instruction,” White said. “I am pleased to provide funding for 108 local literacy projects that will allow adult students to help them achieve their utmost potential in the upcoming year. It has been an honor serving as Secretary of State and State Librarian for the last 24 years, helping to ensure that every citizen of this state has access to quality literacy programs.” A total of 10,589 students are served by adult literacy programs around the state. A total of 4,686 volunteer tutors provide training for students to obtain skills that put them on the path to lifelong learning. Adult literacy projects help Illinois adults who read below the ninthgrade level or speak English at a beginning level to improve their reading, writing, math or use of English as a new language. The Adult Literacy Program is administered by the Secretary of State’s Illinois State Library Literacy Office and awards grants in three categories:

• Adult Volunteer Literacy provides training for volunteers who tutor adults 17 years of age and older in basic reading, math, writing or

language skills. Participating literacy providers may include libraries, volunteer tutoring organizations, community-based organizations, community colleges, regional offices of education, schools (individual and public), preschool programs, school districts, domesticviolence shelters and correctional facilities.

• Penny Severns Family Literacy provides educational services to parents and children to enhance basic reading, math, writing or language skills. Programs must partner with an adult literacy provider, a child-at-risk agency and a public library.

• Workplace Skills Enhancement provides onsite instructional services to employees of participating Illinois businesses, enabling them to enhance their basic reading, writing or language skills, and improve their chances for promotion. Eligible employees must read at or below the ninth-grade level. Grantees must match the grant award and may also provide instructional services to prospective employees. The fiscal agent and submitting agency may be either the educational partner or the business partner. Individuals who are interested in becoming volunteer tutors are encouraged to call or text the Illinois Adult Education Hotline at 800-321-9511.

The Holidays “A Great Time to Sell”

The holiday season is a great time to sell your home! Ok, you need to sell your home. You just got notice of a job transfer, you are getting married and moving to live with your new husband/wife, you just found out you are having a baby and need more space, your last child is graduating and you need less space, whatever the reason you need to move!

Common sense might tell you that you should just wait until January to put your house on the market because well quite frankly it might be kind of a pain to keep your house in “show ready” condition during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. While this might be true, I am here to tell you some really great reasons you should make the effort to put (or keep) your home on the market during the most wonderful time of the year! 1. Holiday house hunters are typically serious home buyers they aren’t going to be looking during the holiday season unless they really want/need to buy. 2. Your home will likely feel very warm and homey during this season (as long as you don’t go Clark Griswald on the neighborhood). 3. If you are planning on spending anytime away visiting

others during the holidays…your home becomes a “go and show” when you are out of town and is always show ready. 4. Many of your neighbors will be having family and friends over for parties and such…you might just get some interested buyers. 5. Lots of people get bonuses and some will likely plan to use theirs as a down payment. 6. Let’s not kid…your house will smell amazing with all the pumpkin pies, sugar cookies, and breads you will be making. 7. People are generally happy during the holiday season; happy people make happy home buyers. 8. The majority of folks will think this is a bad time to sell a home so they will take their homes off the market or wait to put them on the market…this means you will have much less competition!

Heart Smart

In the Bible, “hope” often means simply “to wait.” Sometimes it means “to wait with tense expectation and anticipation.”

It kind of sounds like when you order a package, right? You purchased something you’re really excited about and you check the tracking number every day to confirm exactly when it’s going to arrive. You’re hoping. You’re waiting with anticipation and expectation.

When the Bible tells us to hope, however, it’s telling us to anticipate something much more profound than an Amazon delivery.

It’s important to note that hope is so much more than optimism. Optimism is forcing all of the circumstances laid out in front of you through a positive filter, and expecting the best possible outcome. Amazingly, hope doesn’t have to do with your circumstances. If you’re in a dark valley of life, or on a high mountaintop, you’re still called to wait expectantly on the Lord to show up in your life.

In the Old Testament, so often the circumstances of God’s people were abysmal. And yet, their hope was in the future promise of a Savior and Messiah who would one day save them — and the coming of that Messiah is what we celebrate at Christmas!

Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

The Bible tells us that God is a God of hope. In other words, He’s a God to be expected. He’s a God to be anticipated. When He comes through and shows up, even in ways we couldn’t have expected, we shouldn’t be surprised. That’s who he is! The hope of the Christian is bold: waiting patiently and expectantly for God to one day make all things right with the world. And He will. Do you have that hope this advent season?

Food, drinks, gifts and time with family make the holidays a merry occasion for people across the country. However, all that celebrating can sometimes become a distraction from maintaining heart health.

In fact, the joys of the season can become marred for many as research shows an uptick in cardiac events and heart attack deaths during the final week of December. According to a study published in the American Heart Association journal, “Circulation,” more cardiac deaths occur on Dec. 25 than any other day of the year, followed by the second largest number on Dec. 26 and third largest on Jan. 1.

“The holidays are a busy, often stressful time for many of us,” said American Heart Association Chief Clinical Science Officer Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., M.S., FAHA. “Routines are disrupted. We may tend to eat and drink more and exercise and relax less. We’re getting too little sleep and experiencing too much stress. While we don’t know exactly why there are more deadly heart attacks during this time, it’s important to be aware that these factors can snowball, increasing the risk for a deadly cardiac event.”

Being aware of this annual phenomenon and taking a few important, heart-healthy steps can help save lives. Consider these tips from Dr. Elkind and the experts at the American Heart Association.

* Know symptoms and take action. Heart attack signs vary in men and women, but it’s important to recognize them early

and call 9-1-1 for help. The sooner medical treatment begins, the better chances of survival and preventing heart damage.

* Celebrate in moderation. Eating healthfully during the holidays doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself. There are ways to eat smart, such as by limiting sodium intake and looking for small, healthy swaps so you continue to feel your best while eating and drinking in moderation.

* Practice goodwill toward yourself. Make time to take care of yourself during this busy season. Reading a favorite book, meditating or even playing with pets are productive ways to reduce stress from the family interactions, strained finances, hectic schedules, traveling and other stressors that can be brought on by the holidays.

* Keep moving. The hustle and bustle of holiday preparation often pushes exercise to the side, but it’s important to stay active as much as possible. Get creative to keep moving by going for a family walk or playing physically active games with loved ones.

* Stick to your medications. Busy schedules can cause some people to skip medications, sometimes even forgetting them at home or not getting refills in a timely manner. Try using a medication chart as a reminder, and be sure to keep tabs on your blood pressure numbers.

Discover more ways to live heart-healthy during the holidays and throughout the year at heart.org.

COLA is sweet for Social Security recipients

If you receive Social Security, you’ve probably already heard that your checks in 2023 will be bigger – considerably bigger, in fact. How can you make the best use of this extra money?

Here’s what’s happening: For 2023, there’s an 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits – the largest increase in 40 years. Also, the monthly Medicare Part B premiums are declining next year, to $164.90/month from $170.10/ month, which will also modestly boost Social Security checks for those enrolled in Part B, as these premiums are automatically deducted.

Of course, the sizable COLA is due to the high inflation of 2022, as the Social Security Administration uses a formula based on increases in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). So, it’s certainly possible that you will need some, or perhaps all, of your larger checks to pay for the increased cost of goods and services. But if your cash flow is already relatively strong, you might want to consider these suggestions for using your bigger checks: Reduce withdrawals from your investment portfolio. When you’re retired, you will likely need to withdraw a certain amount from your portfolio each year to meet your expenses. A boost in your Social Security may enable you to withdraw less, at least for a year. This can be particularly advantageous when the markets are down, as you’d like to avoid, as much as possible, selling investments and withdrawing the money when investment prices are low. And the fewer investments you need to sell, the longer your portfolio may last during your retirement years.

Help build your cash reserves. When you’re retired, it’s a good idea to maintain about a year’s worth of the amount you’ll spend from your portfolio in cash, while also keeping three months’ of your spending

needs in an emergency fund, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Your higher Social Security checks could help you build these cash reserves. (Also, it’s helpful to keep another three to five years’ worth of spending from your portfolio in short-term, fixed-income investments, which now, due to higher interest rates, offer better income opportunities.)

Contribute to a 529 plan. You could use some of your extra Social Security money to contribute to a tax-advantaged 529 education savings plan for your grandchildren or other family members.

Contribute to charitable organizations. You might want to use some of your Social Security money to expand your charitable giving. Your generosity will help worthy groups and possibly bring you some tax benefits, too.

While it’s nice to have these possible options in 2023, you can’t count on future COLA increases being as large. The jump in inflation in 2022 was due to several unusual factors, including pandemic-related government spending, supply shortages and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It’s quite possible, perhaps even likely, that inflation will subside in 2023, which, in turn, would mean a smaller COLA bump in 2024.

Nonetheless, while you might not want to include large annual COLA increases as part of your long-term financial strategy, you may well choose to take advantage, in some of the ways described above, of the bigger Social Security checks you’ll receive in 2023. When opportunity knocks, you may want to open the door.

Flagpole removed from Old State Capitol

People walking through downtown Springfield on Monday morning looked up to an unusual sight – a helicopter hovering over the Old State Capitol, dropping a rope and lifting away the flagpole that sat atop the bronze-colored dome.

“We took off the flagpole of at the Old State Capitol today in preparation for a new automated one that will be going up probably in a few months,” said Troy Gilmore, assistant site superintendent for the Springfield State Historic Sites with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The operation took fewer than 15 minutes and was part of an ongoing renovation project that has kept the historic building shrouded behind scaffolding for about two years. The project involves repairing roof leaks, repairing and replacing windows, and replacing portions of the columns known as “capitals” – the decorative portions at the top of Corinthian columns.

Gilmore said replacing the manually controlled flagpole with an automated one will improve safety for workers who raise and lower the flag to half-staff or full staff when occasions call for it.

The Old State Capitol, located a few blocks northeast of the current Statehouse, was used by lawmakers from 1840 to 1876. It was the Capitol when Abraham Lincoln served in the Illinois House and it is where he delivered his famous “House Divided” speech in 1858 after accepting the Republican Party nomination for the U.S. Senate.

Gilmore said that when the legislature left the building in 1876, it was purchased by Sangamon County, which operated it for the next 90 years, during which time it made several substantial changes.

“The most drastic change that the county made was in 1900, when they raised the building up 11 feet taller than it even stands today,” he said. “And that was to add another level of offices on the ground floor. So, after 1902 you walked straight into the building off of the street level, you didn’t even walk up the steps as you would have today.”

The state of Illinois purchased the building in 1966 and launched a three-year restoration project to return the building to its original state, a project that involved taking the building apart and rebuilding it piece-by-piece.

Gilmore said the current renovation project will soon move into its second phase, which will involve removing asbestos from the boiler rooms and installing new restrooms for the first time since the 1960s.

He did not offer an estimate of when the entire project will be complete.

IFB President: Holiday food prices remain high, but supplies remain strong

Americans look forward to celebrating the simplest of gifts and gathering with family and friends around the table during the holiday season. It is also often a time of giving thanks as Illinois farmers mark the end of another growing season.

The past few years have confronted all Americans to pivot, adapt, and learn as we navigate uncharted waters. In March 2018, American farmers were dealing with market destruction because of China’s trade wars. The May 2019 spring planting season reminded Midwest farmers that Mother Nature was in charge when many acres went unplanted. The pandemic that began in March 2020 forced all of us to pivot. Farmers continued to grow food to feed our neighbors in rural, urban, and global communities.

The curveballs continued in 2022 with high inflation, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and uncertainty for an already fragile economy. Farmers vividly remember the role inflation played in the ‘80s farm crisis. That crisis is forever etched in farmers’ memories as historically high-interest rates reached 19%. Many farmers didn’t survive the crisis. Those who did spent many years paying off the debt created by the high-interest rates. Despite the adversity many family farms have faced over the years, 96% of Illinois farms are still family-owned.

I understand firsthand the role inflation has had inside our home and farming operation. Inflation running at 7% to 9% in recent months is robbing consumers (and farmers) of their buying power. Food price inflation is even higher. Other factors include supply chain disruptions and the war in

Ukraine, with other countries pulling back on exports to protect domestic food supplies.

When I’ve been interviewed by news media over the past four years, the standard question is, “How will this impact consumers?” The truth is a farmer’s share of the food dollar is only 7.4 cents.

Illinois shoppers participating in the 37th annual American Farm Bureau Federation’s Thanksgiving Cost survey captured a statewide average price of $65.53 for a classic Thanksgiving meal for 10 people, a 13% increase over the previous year’s state average of $58.15. General price inflation is a big part of the increase in cost for the meal.

It is likely those high prices will continue through the remaining holidays and into the new year.

Food prices reflect many factors including transportation, distribution, and food company marketing costs. Rising costs for fuel, which have more than doubled, and fertilizer, which have tripled, are driving food prices up. As President Kennedy said many years ago, “Farmers are price takers and not price makers.”

The food we grow is shared with our family, friends and neighbors. Farmers understand the pain consumers are feeling at the checkout counter this holiday season. As we give thanks again this year for our many blessings, please know farmers will strive to provide affordable food sustainably to make sure our traditions continue.

Medicare Made The Mess

On November 21, 2022, I wrote a letter to a medical biller for a client from Griffith, Indiana. The letter let the medical firm know that Medicare caused the problem with the bill.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent.

Our client brought the revised, adjusted Medicare Summary Notices that we requested to our office today.

The claims for your services were revised. We sent the revised copies to his secondary insurer to process. Please, allow time to fix the problem.

Neither your firm nor the patient caused the billing problem. Medicare caused it by adjusting the claim(s) and never sending to the secondary insurer a copy of the adjusted Medicare EOB.

The patient and I are working to fix the

mess that Medicare caused so that your firm can get paid the proper amount.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with Medicare related medical billing problems at no charge to demonstrate to our clients that we really care about them. If your insurance agent does not give that high standard of customer service, why not switch to this agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be bought from book stores or online.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

Question: We just moved in our home and we are finding bugs everywhere, including those creepy Centipedes. We did not get a pest inspection. What can we do?

Answer: Before buying any home, you should always have it inspected for pests. Not only can pests bring down the value of your home, but they can also bring down your home. Literally. Termites, Carpenter ants, Powder Post Beetles, Carpenter Bees and other boring pests can cause major structural damage to your house.

A WDO is an Inspection for Wood Destroying Organisms. This inspection is more commonly referred to as a termite inspection. It’s called a WDO because termites are not the only wood destroying organisms. The WDO inspector is trained to look for things that we are not.

Termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage each year, and are known as “silent destroyers” because of their ability to chew through wood, undetected. Unless a buyer knows what to look for, termites can be hard to find with the naked eye and therefore it could take many years before the signs of an infestation are apparent. Always hire a licensed home inspector to perform your WDO.

There’s nothing more terrifying than watching a house centipede shoot across your floor and under your couch. House

centipedes typically have 15 legs and can travel 1.3 feet-per-second. But, this particular bug, is a good bug.

House centipedes are known for killing pests in your house that are completely unwelcome. They kill roaches, moths, flies, silverfish and termites. They use the two legs right near its head, which has been modified to carry venom, and their other legs to scoop up the bug.

Not only are house centipedes killing the bugs you really don’t want in your house, they also don’t create any type of nests or webs as well. They are considered active hunters and are constantly looking for their next prey. They aren’t eating your wood and they aren’t carrying a fatal disease. House centipedes just want to go after other bugs.

If you want to get rid of house centipedes for good, try to get rid of the household pests that they prey on.

By the way, I strongly suggest you perform a WDO on your home ASAP!
