by Janice R Newman How often do we find ourselves physically, mentally, or spiritually present in a situation, yet our hearts and soul remain detached? We acknowledge the routines of our employment, faithfully attend work, and get our paychecks, but the true essence of passion, desire, and motivation required for our jobs eludes us. In relationships, whether personal or professional, we may be physically connected, yet our desire and focus lack genuine commitment. Picture a marriage where the bond exists, but the mental engagement falls short. Two people are in the same house, but their minds and hearts are miles apart. This permeates various facets of our lives, extending from our goals to our spiritual connection with Christ. We participate, yet our dedication is often half-hearted. Some of us think we have a bond with our goals, jobs, spouse, or God but don’t have a true commitment. Thriving in any relationship demands wholehearted commitment and work. Consider instances where your heart, soul, and focus are fully engaged – the results are profound. Why, then, do we not consistently invest our all in every endeavor, choosing instead to merely be in it without truly being with it? We must understand the implications of being physically present but emotionally and spiritually distant. With employment, the routine of going to work and getting a paycheck becomes a mere transaction, a lifeless journey. If our hearts are not invested in the job, there is no passion which leads to a lackluster job. Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NIV) “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” This emphasizes the importance of blending our daily work and activities with enthusiasm and diligence, not just to fulfill the transaction but to honor a higher purpose. In personal relationships, such as marriage, they suffer when there is a gap between physical presence and emotional connection. The commitment in relationships becomes empty and hollow when genuine emotions are not invested. You can learn to change your attitude, reactions,
and interactions in relationships to foster love and growth. So, when you say to your partner “I’m happy you’re home” that its sincere and with love. Ephesians 4:2(NIV) advises us to “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” By consciously choosing to engage emotionally in our relationships, we foster unity, and understanding and develop a bond deeper than proximity. In working towards our goals, we must be in it until it comes to fruition to be successful in achieving the goal. Goals will need to be altered for various reasons, but the ultimate is reaching the end results. If we are physically engaging in pursuing our goals but our heart is not “with it” in achieving them, we are doing a disservice to ourselves and wasting time. You may have heard of the man who stopped 3 feet from striking gold in a mine. He was involved in the pursuit of his dreams but lost patience, desire, focus, and motivation. He was not fully committed to it to achieve it, so he didn’t. Review your goals and where your heart stands for finishing them. In our spiritual lives, many find themselves physically present in religious settings weekly, participating in rituals and traditions, yet spiritually lost and adrift. Jesus emphasized in Matthew 6:21 (NIV), “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” To be spiritually connected and present means aligning our hearts and treasures with our faith, and embracing a relationship with God that is not just attending church once a week, but a deeper, personal committed connection. This comes through prayer and worship by setting time aside to talk, communicate, read the Bible, pray, and listen to God. We must go beyond the church building to have a relationship with God. We need to cultivate motivation to completely devote ourselves to our tasks, goals, and relationships to transform our reactions and engagements for the better. Y? Why Not! Cook County property owners have no need to wait for their next property tax bills to arrive in the mail to find out how much they will owe by the March 1 due date, Treasurer Maria Pappas said today. Taxpayers can visit cookcountytreasurer. com to view, download and prepay their First Installment 2023 property tax bills. Property tax bills are divided into two annual installments. The First Installment, which is 55 percent of the previous year’s total tax, is due March 1, 2024. By providing an early look at the bills, property owners can plan their finances or make payments before the end of the year. “A lot of bills come due after the holidays,” Pappas said. “By posting First Installment bills online months before they are due or even mailed we strive to help people manage their household budgets and plan accordingly.”

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Proverbs 16:18 (NIV) says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” In the beginning, Satan exalted himself to take God’s place, but God cast him down. Then Satan tempted Adam to exalt himself to God’s throne, causing Adam to fall from his original glory. Jesus says in Matthew 23:12 (NIV), “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled.” Then he adds a line: “and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Jesus is the prime example in Philippians 2:5-11. As God’s Son, he always existed with his Father and the Spirit and shared their glory as God over all. Yet Jesus willingly set aside his radiance and rights as God the Son to climb down to our level and become one of us. He wrapped his glory in the tattered cloak of our human flesh, like a man with an Armani suit might hide the glory of his appearance under a soiled overcoat, denying himself the admiration and respect it generates. But that’s not all. “And being found in human form, he became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8, ESV). He lowered himself still further to suffer a painful, humiliating death sentence in our place for our sin. But there’s more. “Therefore, God has highly exalted him”, Philippians 2:9 (ESV) exclaims. Today, Jesus is exalted as the God-Man at God’s right hand in heaven’s oval office. He is also lifted high in the gospel as the one who died on the cross for us so that “whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16) and “every knee shall bow... and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10a,11, ESV). Pictured here are my late son Spencer in center, my late brother Jerry at left and the late Linda Cundari, right. All are in Heaven now and I pray for them every day. Spencer was born December 6, 1969 and died on March 17th, 2021. Fr Boivin suggested that praying for them all together would give added power to our prayers. And, we also pray for the time we spent with these loved ones here on earth! ***

FUN CHRISTMAS FACT: Christmas trees became popular in Victorian Britain. But these were first seen in 16th Century Germany where, at Christmas time, people decorated fir trees with fruit and nuts – and later sweets, paper shapes and candles. Amazingly, historians think the origins of this festive tradition may date back to the Romans and Ancient Egyptians, who used evergreen plants and garlands as symbols of everlasting life. Wow!

Helped 92-year-old Client from Saint John WOODROW WILCOX On December 13, 2023, I wrote a letter to a medical firm in northwest Indiana about a bill that it sent to a client in Saint John, Indiana. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client (and others), here is the letter that I sent. Our client sent to us a bill from your firm to check for her. The bill seeks a balance of $XXXXX on Guarantor ID XXXXXX for services rendered on 4/3/23 and 10/30/23. I checked with the client’s secondary insurer to learn what it knew of the bill. It reported that Medicare never sent these claims to it. That is not the fault of the patient. To fix this problem made by Medicare as fast as possible, please send both the original claim information and the Medicare EOB information on these claims directly to the claims department of the patient’s secondary insurer at the following address. There is another matter that I did not mention in the letter but that I will mention here. The medical billing firm included a false message on the bill to our client. The false message stated, “Notice: This is a bill. Based upon information from your health plan, you owe the amount shown.” The client’s Medicare supplement insurance plan company never got the claims from Medicare. So, the statement on the bill is absolutely false and it was sent through the U.S. Postal Service to pressure our senior citizen client to pay a balance on a bill that was wrongfully calculated and presented to our client. Why isn’t that considered a form of MAIL FRAUD on a senior? Why aren’t medical firms and their billing firms prosecuted for such things? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through a book store or online.

Illinois Families Spend a Giannoulias Announces $1.4 Whopping 10+ Hours Together Mil. in Grants to Support 2,713 on Festive Activities, Finds Survey. Illinois Public School Libraries As the winter chill sets in, the holiday season warms the hearts with an eclectic mix of activities that bring to life the festive spirit. This is a time for cultural convergence, where Christmas, Hanukkah’s Festival of Lights, Diwali’s earthen lamps, Shen Dan Jieh’s family gatherings, and Eid al-Fitr’s communal prayers, all blend into the American tradition of celebration. Families unite in a series of enchanting traditions. They venture to Christmas markets, a sensory feast of gingerbread aromas, and artisanal crafts that hark back to medieval Europe. The hunt for the Christmas tree becomes a cherished expedition to frosted tree farms, each family selecting a tree as unique as they are. Neighborhoods transform into canvases of light, with homes adorned in glittering bulbs that tell stories of joy and community. The holiday cheer is palpable, with events and shopping sprees echoing the merry bustle of the season. A recent survey by Gunther Volkswagen Daytona Beach, encompassing 3,000 families, sought to quantify this joy in hours and ranked the favorite festive activities. Illinois families averaged 10 hours and 36 minutes together embracing holiday activities, while Rhode Island and Wisconsin’s families topped the list at 14 hours of shared merriment. Interactive map showing how much time families in each state spend together on festive
activities over the holiday period (click on ‘embed’ to host on your site) Here’s what families in Illinois cherish most by spending time together: #1 Holiday movie marathons #2 Viewing Christmas lights #3 Baking cookies #4 Ice skating #5 Hosting or attending parties #6 Choosing and collecting a Christmas tree #7 Attending religious services #8 Attending markets #9 Volunteering However, above any specific activities, 90% of respondents agreed that just spending time with family is the best thing about the festive period. The survey also pinpointed November 3rd as the day when the average person’s anticipation for the holiday festivities began to bloom. “In the variety of the holiday season, each thread – from the twinkling lights to the shared warmth of a kitchen filled with baking aromas – represents a cherished moment with loved ones,” explains Joseph Gunther IV of Gunther Volkswagen Daytona Beach. “Our survey reveals not just how families spend their time, but also the cherished rituals that define the festive season for them. It’s these traditions that fuel the anticipation and joy that build up long before December’s celebrations”.
Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias is awarding more than $1.4 million to qualifying public school districts to the benefit of 2,713 school libraries throughout Illinois. The grants, awarded once every fiscal year, will support school library services for 1.2 million students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade. Resources and services provided through the grant include library books, e-books, audiobooks, periodicals, multilingual materials, technology and programs. “It’s imperative that all Illinois students have access to necessary resources including reading materials and learning services at our public school libraries,” Giannoulias said. “School libraries serve as places of learning and discovery. These funds will ensure that our libraries are well-equipped to educate and inspire our future generations.” Based on a statutory formula, school districts receive $0.885 per student for their enrollment at each school having a qualified library. Funding for the program originates from the General Reserve Fund and is appropriated for

Avoid tapping into retirement savings early SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you want to make a big purchase, such as a new car or a piece of property, or you were faced with a large, unexpected expense, such as a major home or auto repair, would you have the funds readily available? If not, you might look at what may be your biggest pool of money — your 401(k) or IRA. But should you tap into these accounts well before you retire? Maybe not — and here’s why: • Less money in retirement – The more money you invest in your retirement accounts, and the longer you keep it invested, the more you’ll probably have when you need it most — when you’re retired. Consequently, taking out sizable amounts from these accounts before you retire could be costly, as it would disrupt the benefits of compounding that can be achieved by holding investments for the long term. • Possible bump into higher tax bracket – The money you take out from your traditional IRA and 401(k) is taxable in the year of withdrawal. So, if you withdraw a significant amount of money at once from your traditional IRA or 401(k), you could be pushed into a higher tax bracket, at least for one year. • Tax penalties – If you take money out of a 401(k) or traditional IRA before you turn 59½, you could face a 10% tax penalty, although some exceptions exist. Penaltyfree withdrawals can be made for several reasons, including for education and medical expenses, first-time purchase of a home (up to $10,000), after the birth or adoption of a child (up to $5,000) and more (see irs.gov/ taxtopics/tc557). With a Roth IRA, which is funded with after-tax dollars, you can withdraw contributions — but not earnings — at any time, for any purpose, without incurring penalties.
Given these issues, how can you avoid dipping into your retirement accounts when you’re faced with a financial need? One possibility is to take out a loan from your 401(k). Unlike a 401(k) withdrawal, a loan is neither taxable nor subject to tax penalties. Also, the interest you pay on a 401(k) loan goes back into your account. Still, a 401(k) loan has its drawbacks. If you leave your job, you’ll likely have to repay the loan in a short period of time and if you don’t have all the money to repay it, the loan will be considered in default, so you’ll owe taxes and the 10% penalty if you’re younger than 59½. But even if you don’t leave your job and you do repay the loan, you’ll still have taken away money that could have potentially kept growing within your taxdeferred account. As mentioned above, as your money compounds, you’ll want to minimize disruptions. Building an emergency fund is another way to gain access to cash. Such a fund should contain at least six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. It can take time to build a fund of this size, so it’s never too soon to start putting away money for it. To avoid the temptation of dipping into your emergency fund, you’d ideally keep this fund separate from your daily spending accounts. Explore all your options before tapping into your IRA or 401(k) early. Keeping these accounts intact as long as possible is one of the best moves you can make to help build your future retirement income. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our buyers recently had a home inspection performed on my home. The inspector said the fireplace damper is broken. I haven’t used my fireplace in years. We have had 17 Christmases in our home, so I’m sure the damper was damaged by the fat guy in the red suit coming down our chimney. Why should I be responsible to make that repair? Answer: We assume you mean Santa Claus. I think the jolly old man who brings happiness to millions of children & families every year, deserves a bit more respect from you. Since Santa visits millions of homes every year, there are bound to be a few accidents. We once had a few roof shingles break off from what was probably caused by Santa and his reindeer team. Since Santa’s visits have been very special to our family, we consider this as normal Holiday maintenance and had no problem making the repairs. Mr. Seller, the broken damper is a safety
issue. Your new buyers have every right to insist that you fix the chimney damper. Failure to do so could terminate the contract on your home. We suggest you fix the safety issue with your home, move towards a successful closing and be happy knowing that your new buyers will be safe in their new Home. Here is something else you should know: Blaming Santa for this broken damper is most definitely going to put you on His “Naughty List.” You may want to reconsider your accusations. BBB Tip: 6 Steps to Avoid Package Theft. By Rick Walz - President/CEO BBB Serving Northern Indiana The rise of online marketplaces and expedited delivery services is convenient for many consumers nationwide, allowing shoppers to search for the perfect gift for friends and family. Unfortunately, purchasing and having the item delivered to the proper address does not guarantee you will receive it. According to a Security.org study, approximately 79% of consumers experienced package theft in 2022. Package thieves, also known as “porch pirates,” often take advantage of an opportunity and may frequent a neighborhood or community multiple times before moving on to another. They will often target houses that provide a quick in-and-out route, especially if the porch or area where packages are delivered is within 25 feet of the street and is easily visible. As a crime of opportunity, preventing or discouraging package theft can be accomplished in several ways, depending on the location of your residence, type, and community. For instance, preventing package theft at an apartment complex in the middle of the city differs from a suburban residential community. However, consumers can use specific strategies to discourage the act no matter where they live. BBB provides the following tips to prevent package thieves from affecting your plans: Check with neighbors. Sometimes, your package may not be stolen simply at the wrong address. Before filing a report or contacting the sender, check with your neighbors and see if the delivery service may have dropped off your package at the wrong address. Many delivery companies will take pictures of your package in the designated location – be sure to check for the photo and verify it is at the right spot. Don’t leave unattended packages. When possible, do not leave delivered packages unattended for long periods. If you are expecting a package, attempt to schedule its delivery when you know you will be home. Ask your neighbors if they mind holding on to packages delivered if you plan to be gone for an extended time. Ship to store. If purchasing an item from a retailer with a physical location near your home,
consider shipping it there instead. Retailers will require proof of purchase or identification before releasing packages they have received, and this is a sure way to avoid porch pirates. Use a security camera. Installing a home security system with cameras or a cameraenabled doorbell is a great way to deter package theft, especially when highly visible. Consider including a sign that specifically states that the residence is under surveillance. Even if a package is stolen from your porch, the video evidence will help law enforcement track down the thieves (but be wary of the risk of internetconnected devices and research before you purchase). Require a signature. Many delivery companies include the option to require a signature before leaving a package, letting you take physical possession of the item as soon as it is delivered. While this option works well for those often at home, especially for expensive items, it may create difficulties in receiving packages if your schedule and the delivery service differ. Be sure to check with the delivery company on their policy for packages that are not signed for; they may return it to the sender after a certain number of attempts. Consider a package receiving service. Some major retailers, such as Amazon, offer secure package-receiving locations away from your home that you can access with a key or code. Some independent businesses also specialize in this service, allowing you to designate a different delivery location for your packages and the ability to pick them up on your way home. If you fear your package being stolen, file a report with your local police department and the delivery company. Depending on your delivery service, they may offer insurance or other policies to reimburse you for your losses. If you spot a scam, whether you have lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
