Mr. Pierogi hams it up at Noll to help staff celebrate Christmas

When the school board at Bishop Noll Institute wanted to show the faculty and staff how much they appreciate them at Christmas and always, they brought in a little help from a famous friend.

On Monday, BNI’s faculty and staff received family sized meals featuring traditional Polish favorites. To show some extra gratitude, the future Mr. Pierogi, Tony Panek ’08, returned to his alma mater to help spread Christmas joy and pierogi!

Bishop Noll’s school board chairman, Mark Cloghessy, a 1976 graduate of the school, said the board members always look for ways to say thank you to Bishop Noll’s incredibly dedicated staff and faculty.

“This is a simple way to say thank you to each of them for the time and effort they put into making Bishop Noll such a wonderful and welcoming place to work and learn and flourish,” he said. “Our faculty and staff are at the heart of all we do here at Bishop Noll. They are such an impressive group of dedicated professionals and without them we could not accomplish our mission to educate our students, mind, body and soul.”

The meals included a dinner complete with ham, pierogi, Polish sausage, kolacky and Oplatki wafers, which are a beloved Christmas tradition in Polish homes on Christmas Eve. The Oplatek is a thin wafer similar in consistency to a communion host. They are often stamped with elaborate Christmas scenes and historically were distributed by churches to parishioners’ homes during the advent season.

“We are so proud of our Bishop Noll family,” Cloghessy said. “It is through their hard work and dedication that we are thriving

The average Illinois commuter consumed over 161k calories while driving in 2022*, according to a study commissioned by Gunther Mazda. This is 623 calories alone per commute, or one quarter of the daily recommended intake. In fact, a study found that 85 million Americans admit to eating fast food every day.

Now that the world has been getting back to normal, more and more employees are returning to the office - and that means the return of the era of the long commute. But it’s all too easy to try and break up a long, boring journey with a distraction - such as food. A person’s likelihood of becoming obese increases by 6% for every hour spent commuting, as well as an increased risk of high blood pressure. Long commute times are linked to factors like insufficient physical activity, and poor sleep habits.

Broken down by state, Gunther Mazda found that Nevadans consumed the most calories on their commute this year - a substantial 287k. On the other hand, those in Maine, with perhaps shorter distances to travel, consumed the least - just 65k in 2022. On a national scale, the average driver consumed 199,997 calories this past year.

The study also found the following:

While commuting, drivers say they normally consume chips (32%) - presumably they’re easy to access with one hand, while keeping the other on the steering wheel. This was followed by burgers (30%), fries (24%), burritos (6%), chocolate (4%), tacos (2%) and ice cream (2%).

75% of commuters say that the more time they spend on their commute, the less time they spend exercising when they get home. And despite the potential health detriments, 49% would opt for a higher paying job if it mean they had to commute more.

While there is not a law against eating or drinking in your car per se, it can certainly be a recipe for disaster. Taking your eyes off the road while grabbing the chips from your bag, or unwrapping a burger at the wheel does count as distracted driving. If a police officer believes that you are distracted at the wheel, then you can face penalties or fines. In fact, a recent study found that 18% of all crashes are caused by distracted driving.

Some foods or drinks may be trickier to consumer than others. Coffee for example could be a risky beverage while driving. You might think that the barista put the lid on properly, but if it slips while turning, you could end up with boiling hot coffee on your lap while at the wheel.

Another important factor to consider when eating and driving is that most people feel very sleepy after eating. This is because after a meal your body experiences a drop in blood sugar. After eating sweets or refined carbohydrates, you experience increased levels of insulin, but after a while your blood sugar crashes which results in lethargy, fatigue, cravings and brain fog. As a driver it is important to constantly remain alert and present when driving. Pronounced lethargy from eating could result in a lack of concentration and focus when driving which could result in fatal accidents.

‘Spending a lot of time in the car can clearly encourage unhealthy habits,’ says Joseph Gunther IV at GuntherMazda. com. ‘As more and more of us return to pre-pandemic levels of commuting, perhaps now would be a good time to re-set and change eating habits, so we feel healthier generally and more alert behind the wheel.’

*based on a survey of over 3,000 drivers in November 2022.

Real Estate

Questions & Answers

Question: We hired a real estate broker to sell our home that was recommended by one of these… “We will find you the top agent in the area companies.” The Realtor they suggested, and I hired, was terrible. We just didn’t click. The home took longer than expected to sell and his recommendations to improve our home were very costly. I should have just called one of those local…” I’ll sell your home for very little commission” real estate companies. I am so disappointed with all this.

Answer: Let’s break this down a bit. Those companies who claim that they will find you the top agent are trying to make money. They charge the agent they recommend and gets your business, around 30-35% of the agent’s commission. This leaves the agent little marketing money to get your home sold. So, this actually works against you. But sellers are fooled by this claim.

Secondly. Hiring companies based on a low commission is also a bad idea. Here is a quote from a well-known Economist named John Ruskin: “It’s unwise to pay too much. But it’s worse to pay too little.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all.

When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

The common law of business balances prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It can’t be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run.

And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.

There is hardly anything in the world that someone can’t make a little worse and sell a little cheaper—and people who consider price alone are that man’s lawful prey.”

Selling your home is selling one of your biggest investments. Do it right. Call a reputable company that is in the area, call a local agent who has sold homes in your neighborhood, or call us. Interview them until you feel comfortable in making a decision.

Protect financial accounts from “cyberthieves”

Cybercrime is booming. In 2021, the FBI reported that cybercriminals scammed nearly $7 billion from Americans — a figure slightly higher than the gross domestic product (GDP) of Switzerland for that year, according to research organization World Economics. How can you protect yourself from cyberthieves?

Here are some suggestions that can help: Watch out for “phishing” attempts. You may receive emails that appear to be from a legitimate firm, requesting information your financial institution would never request online — confirmation of an account number, password, Social Security number, credit card number and so on. These notes can look official, often incorporating a firm’s logo, so pay close attention to what’s being asked of you.

Think twice before clicking or downloading. If you are suspicious about a communication, don’t click on a link or download an attachment — instead, go to your financial firm’s website or use their app to verify they sent the information or request.

Become adept with passwords. Use a different password for each of your accounts and change your passwords regularly. Of course, maintaining multiple passwords can be confusing, so you might want to consider using password management software, which generates passwords, stores them in an encrypted database and locks them behind a master password — which is the only one you’ll need to remember.

Use your own devices. Try to avoid using public computers or devices that aren’t yours to access your financial accounts. If you do use another computer, clear your browsing history after you log out of your account.

Be cautious about using Wi-Fi when traveling. When you’re on the road, you may want to use public hotspots, such as wireless networks in airports and hotels. But many people don’t realize that these hotspots

reduce their security settings to make access easier, which, in turn, makes it easier for cyberthieves to intercept your information.

In fact, some hackers even build their own public hotspots to draw in internet-seekers in an effort to commit theft. So, if at all possible, wait until you can access a trusted, encrypted network before engaging in any communications or activity involving your financial accounts.

Don’t give up control of your computer. Under no circumstances should you provide remote access to your computer to a stranger who contacts you, possibly with an offer to help “disinfect” your computer. If you do think your device has an issue with malicious software, contact a legitimate technician for assistance.

Know whom you’re calling for help. If you need assistance from, say, a customer service area of a financial institution, make sure you know the phone number is accurate and legitimate — possibly one from a billing or confirmation statement. Some people have been scammed by Googling “support” numbers that belonged to fraudsters who asked for sensitive information.

Review all correspondence with your financial services provider. Keep a close eye on your account activity and statements. If you see mistakes or unauthorized activity in your account, contact your financial institution immediately.

Advanced technology has brought many benefits, but also many more opportunities for financial crimes. By taking the above steps, and others that may be needed, you can go a long way toward defending yourself against persistent and clever cyberthieves.

Heart Smart

Homonyms are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. Consider the homonyms ‘presents’ and ‘presence’. Maybe you opened Christmas presents recently. Maybe you enjoyed the presence of family and friends over Christmas dinner.

John 1:14 (ESV) describes the coming of Jesus this way: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Often, as fallen humans, we crave God’s presents. We long for inner peace, joy, security, significance, success, material blessings, good relationships, healing, victory over some destructive pattern, and more. These are good things to long and pray for.

Our primary need, however, is God’s presence. We receive his life-giving presence in Jesus when we repent and believe in Christ. That is, when we confess and turn from our sin, our distorted pursuit of God’s presents apart from him. And trust that Christ died in our place to secure our forgiveness and adoption in God’s family to enjoy his presence forever. Jesus is God’s greatest gift to us, the human package in whom we receive God’s presence and his presents.

The son of a wealthy man lost his life saving others. The father decided to auction off his estate. The venue was packed. The auction began with a painting of the man’s deceased son. The auctioneer started the bidding at $10.00. A close friend of the son raised his hand. But no one else wanted it. They were waiting for the good stuff. The auctioneer said, “Going once, going twice.... sold for $10.00!” Then he said, “This concludes our auction today.” The crowd thought he was joking, until he added, “He who gets the son gets it all.”

2023 Seller Resolutions

At the end of every December, people make all kinds of resolutions for the coming year. Typically, these are things that they want to improve about themselves, ways to make their day to day personal or work life better, or ideas to put them on track for a change. Many times these surface as a result of mistakes made in the past 12 months. However, when it comes to real estate, resolutions don’t necessarily apply as it’s unlikely that you do a real estate transaction each year. Furthermore, you can’t actually resolve to buy your neighbor’s house or sell your $100,000 home for $300,000. Well, you could, but you’d probably be setting yourself up for disappointment right from the start. Some things are simply out of a would-be seller’s control. But as a wouldbe seller, you can learn from and make resolutions based on those who have gone before you. Example, I am sure there are current sellers who are resolved to take the next buyer that makes an offer under their asking price a little bit more seriously. If you plan to sell your home in the near future, here are some helpful resolutions that your might consider…RESLOVE to think of your home as a product. Start cleaning out old stuff now. If there are things deep in your closets that you don’t think you’ll use between January and the time you intend to move, consider a storage locker or making space in the garage. Does your real estate agent suggest that the basement needs a paint

job? Get some painting bids now. Have you always hated how the bathroom vanity takes up so much space? Consider changing it now so buyers will perceive your bathroom as bigger. This will also help you spread out the costs of home repairs and changes over several months. RESLOVE to understand your timing and exit strategy. One of the biggest stresses on a seller is trying to plan a purchase and sale at the same time. Can you afford to close on the new home before selling? If so, for how long? Do you need to sell the property first? If so, will the potential sale price support a home purchase in the neighborhood you want to be in? If not, what other areas should you be looking in? Selling and buying at the same time brings up all kinds of financial, emotional and physical stress. It’s a lot to think about and plan for, engaging a good Realtor now will help you to have a strategy in place well before you have to take action. Happy New Year and may God bless you and your family in 2023.

New year to bring new laws in IL

By now, almost everyone in Illinois has heard that Jan. 1 will mark the beginning of a significant change in the state’s criminal justice system – the elimination of cash bail.

It’s an issue that dominated the 2022 campaigns and has been both praised and criticized on editorial pages in newspapers across the state. It essentially means that starting Jan. 1, the decision as to whether a criminal suspect should be held in jail while awaiting trial will be based on public safety and the likelihood the suspect will flee rather than their financial ability to post bond.

And while that criminal justice reform has received widespread attention, it is by no means the only new law that will take effect when the calendar turns over to 2023.

For most people who work a minimum wage job, the new year will bring a pay raise to $13 per hour, a $1 increase over the current wage. That’s the result of a law Gov. JB Pritzker signed in 2019, his first major legislative victory after being sworn into office a month earlier. The law will eventually raise the wage to $15 an hour on Jan. 1, 2025.

The new $13 hourly rate does not apply to all minimum wage earners. People who receive tips at work will see their base wage rise to $7.80 an hour. And people younger than 18 who work fewer than 650 hours per year will see their wage go up to $10.50 an hour.

The higher wage will probably come as welcome news for those who drive a car to and from work. That’s because the new year will also bring higher motor fuel taxes.

The same year Pritzker signed the minimum wage bill, he also signed a multi-year, $45 billion transportation and capital improvements bill known as “Rebuild Illinois,” which is funded in part with higher motor fuel taxes that are scheduled to increase with inflation each year.

House Bill 3699 expands an existing state council charged with providing grants and financial support to law enforcement agencies to aid in identifying, apprehending and prosecuting carjackers and recover stolen vehicles.

And House Bill 3772 ensures that victims of carjackings are not liable for costs and fines associated with impounding a vehicle that was stolen or hijacked, provided the owner files a police report in a timely manner.

Education

To address a shortage of substitute teachers throughout the state, House Bill 4798, signed April 27, allows students enrolled in approved teacher training programs who have earned at least 90 credit hours to obtain a substitute teaching license. Before, applicants had to hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education.

House Bill 4716, signed May 27, calls on the Illinois State Board of Education to adopt “rigorous learning standards” for classroom and laboratory phases of driver education programs for novice teen drivers. Those will include, at a minimum, the Novice Teen Driver Education and Training Administrative Standards developed by the Association of National Stakeholders in Traffic Safety Education in association with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

I phoned the client’s secondary insurer to ask about this bill. It said it did not receive any information about this bill from Medicare. That is not the fault of the patient or her insurance company. It is Medicare’s fault.

The fastest way to fix this problem that

Medicare caused is for you to send both the original claim information and the Medicare EOB information directly to the secondary insurer with the following contact information.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients with such medical bill problems. It is one of the ways that we show our clients that we really about them. Does your insurance agent give great customer service like this or not?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

The adjustment in the tax rate is supposed to take effect on July 1 of each year, the first day of the state’s fiscal year. But last spring, in the face of rising inflation and healthy state revenues, lawmakers authorized a six-month delay in the scheduled increase, putting it off until Jan. 1.

As a result, starting Jan. 1, the motor fuel tax people pay at the pump will go up 3.1 cents per gallon, and then it will increase again when the next regular adjustment date comes around on July 1, 2023.

Criminal law

Several new criminal laws will go into effect Jan. 1, including three that deal with sex offenses.

One of those prevents people who solicit sex from a minor or a person with a severe or profound intellectual disability from asserting a defense that they simply did not know the person was underage or intellectually disabled. House Bill 4593, signed into law May 27, puts the burden of proof on the defendant that they did not know the age or disability status of the other person, rather than the other way around.

Another new law changes the definition of when a person is “unable to give knowing consent.” Under current law, a person cannot give knowing consent when the accused person “administers any intoxicating or anesthetic substance or any controlled substance” that causes the victim to lose consciousness of the nature of the act.

House Bill 5441, signed June 16, broadens that definition to include when the victim has taken any intoxicating or controlled substance causing them to lose consciousness of the nature of the act, even if the substances were administered by someone else.

Another bill expands certain employment restrictions that apply to convicted child sex offenders. Currently, they are prohibited from being employed by, or even being present at, child day care centers, schools that provide before- and after-school programs for children or any facility that provides programs or services exclusively for people under age 18.

Senate Bill 3019, signed May 27, expands that to prohibit convicted child sex offenders from working at carnivals, amusement enterprises, county fairs and the State Fair when people under age 18 are present.

Another new law expands the list of professionals who are required to report suspicions of child abuse or neglect. Starting Jan. 1, under Senate Bill 3833, signed May 13, occupational therapists and assistants, physical therapists and assistants, and athletic trainers will be added to that list.

Carjacking

Three new laws taking effect Jan. 1 are intended to address a spike in carjackings around the state. All were signed on May 26.

House Bill 601 expands the crime of possession of burglary tools to include possession, with the intention to enter and steal a vehicle, of devices to unlock or start a vehicle without the key to that vehicle, or devices that capture or duplicate a signal from a key fob to unlock or start the vehicle.

In an effort to get more people to pursue careers in human services, Senate Bill 3925, signed June 10, establishes a student loan repayment program. Subject to appropriations, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission will award loan repayment grants to qualified individuals with an associate degree or higher who works for a human services agency that contracts with or is grant-funded by a state agency that provides “direct or indirect services that ensure that individuals have essential elements to build and maintain physical, emotional, and economic well-being at every phase of life.”

Awards can be made for a maximum of four years. Maximum amounts are $3,000 per year for someone with an associate degree, $15,000 per year for a person with a bachelor’s degree and $25,000 per year for a person with a master’s degree or higher, with a $5,000 peryear add-on if the applicant holds certain professional licenses.

Meanwhile, students currently enrolled in any program at a public university or community college will have access to trained individuals who can help them apply for federal, state or local assistance based on their financial need.

House Bill 4201, signed June 7, requires those institutions to designate a “benefits navigator” to help students identify and determine their eligibility for various benefit programs.

Alzheimer’s care

Senate Bill 3707, signed May 27, requires all employees and people who work for agencies that contract with the Illinois Department on Aging who provide direct services to individuals participating in its Community Care Program to receive at least two hours of training in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, as well as safety risks, communication and behavior associated with the disease.

Hunting Starting Jan. 1, deer hunters in Illinois will have a new option for the type of firearm they use. House Bill 4386, signed May 27, authorizes the use of single-shot centerfire rifles – guns that can fire only a single round of ammunition that contains primer in the center of the cartridge and not in the rim of the cartridge. Before, only shotguns, handguns and muzzleloading rifles were allowed.

State symbols

Illinois will have two new official state symbols effective Jan. 1. House Bill 4821 establishes the eastern milksnake as the official state snake. That was an initiative of Gentry Heiple, a snake enthusiast and Carterville Junior High School seventh grader. And House Bill 4261 establishes dolostone as the official state rock. That was an initiative of a group of students from Pleasantdale Middle School and Maplebrook Elementary School.

Vehicles People who own vehicles that were manufactured in Illinois will be able to apply for a slight break on their registration fees starting Jan. 1. Senate Bill 3609 allows those drivers to apply for a one-time $25 rebate, “if the vehicle is manufactured in this state and the application for title is made no more than one year after the month in which the vehicle was manufactured.”
