TASK 3 Listen to the text about haze. As you listen, identify the answers carefully and fill in the blanks.
Haze is an atmospheric condition where particles, smoke, dust and moisture suspend in the air obscuring visibility. Sources of haze include emissions from power plants, industrial activities, automobiles as well as farming practices.
In Southeast Asia, haze poses a serious and recurring problem every year, particularly between May to October, due to the burning of forests in some countries to clear land. Depending on how sensitive you are, the severity of the haze and the duration of exposure, you may experience the following short-term effects such as conjunctivitis , sneezing, sore throat, coughing, and headache. These symptoms are usually mild and will subside when you limit your exposure to haze.
During a prolonged haze period when the air quality is poor, take the following precautions to protect yourself. First of all, drink more water and increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. They help the body to flush out toxins absorbed through the skin and lungs, and improve the immune system. Furthermore, avoid outdoor activities. Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses, especially heart and respiratory disease, should remain indoors. Under severe haze condition, you should wear a respirator if you must go outside. Respirators work better than surgical masks as they are better fit to restrict polluted air from entering the nose and mouth.
Haze is a common occurrence for some of us and poses some serious health threats. Therefore, it is important to take the necessary steps to protect ourselves from the adverse effects of haze.

TASK 1 Read the newspaper report and answer the questions that follow.
MIRI: After a massive landslide, a longhouse in northern Sarawak, with 32 living quarters and a population of about 300, collapsed. The landslide is believed to have been caused by hill-slope erosion. The longhouse, known as Rumah Empaling which is located at Sg Labang some 150km south of Miri, fell apart at about 6 a.m. on Tuesday. After being hit by an avalanche of soil and rocks that started at about 5.30 p.m. on Monday, the building started to break apart. Luckily, all the residents had been evacuated and there were no fatalities. The Fire and Rescue Department had deployed a team of rescuers from Bintulu town to the site, which is about 75km away. Hambali Mohamad, the head of rescue operations at the site has confirmed that all the affected residents were evacuated safely before the building collapsed. “They have been sent to the nearest school, SK Sengian Labang, and will housed at the school hall for now,” he said. Welfare authorities too have been informed, and aid is being arranged. The office of Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has also been notified about the incident. The Public Works Department has been alerted, and soil engineers will be sent to the site to determine the cause of the landslide. Two days ago, a landslide was also reported at Kg. Rian in the Song district in Kapit Division.

TIME TO WRITE Solving Problem What are the steps that can be taken to prevent air pollution in your city? TASK 1 Read the passage and complete the table by identifying the ways to prevent air pollution and how they are done.
The air we breathe in is becoming increasingly polluted. However, we can play our part in cleaning up the air.
One way to cleaning up the air is by conserving energy. We can conserve energy by lessening the use of light and appliances. For example, when we leave a room we should turn off the lights. Furthermore, do not use the air-conditioner all the time. Instead, try to get used to the heat or open all the windows and doors in your house. We can also conserve energy by taking shorter showers or baths. Heating water requires a lot of energy.
Changing our buying habits too can help decrease air pollution. First of all, we can become a maker. Instead of always buying things at the shops, we can use raw ingredients to make our own things from food to shampoo. We should also buy goods at local shops instead of commercial stores. This is because commercial stores tend to get their goods shipped in from all over the world and this greatly contributes to air pollution. We should also go for less packaging. The plastic, foil and cardboard used in packaging is manufactured using practices that can contribute to air pollution. Also, as much as possible we must try to reuse, recycle and compost. When we reuse, recycle and compost we tend to have less trash going into the landfills. Landfills are big sources of air pollution.
Another way is by lessening our car usage. We could carpool with our neighbours to go to work or school. It will be a good opportunity to interact with our neighbours. We could also take public transport more often. Another thing we could do is ride bicycles to nearby places. Not only will this help to reduce air pollution, we will also get a good workout.
In conclusion, we can play a part in reducing air pollution, Therefore it is time for us to start doing our part.

Listening An information leaflet
If we compare the food choices nowadays to the food choices back then are much healthier. A grandmother in our neighbourhood, which is about 86 years old, is a vegetarian told me that she has never eaten any meat, snacks, instant noodles, instant porridge and processed food. I was so shocked because she told me that her snacks were only the sugar cane and fruits. She has never been admitted to the hospital and she is still very slim and healthy today. It shows that the food that we choose to eat will affect our health. In this modern world, gadgets are more likely to be the preferable activity for most of the children nowadays. At the age of 1 year old, they have already been given a tablet to watch their favourite cartoon and playing games. In the evening, you can see that no one will be playing at the playground because all of them are busy with their phones and tablets. Comparably, ten years before; when stones, fans and papers were the only tools for us to play, life was fun and healthy as it required one playing with body movement and sweat. Parents love their children so much that they are willing to give almost everything to meet their children's’ needs. They should that realise it will bring harm to them in the future. Children who choose to sleep, playing games, and watching television will keep more fats than the amount required, this is due to the lack of physical movement that might be as the result for bad health condition such as high blood pressure and diabetes. In a nutshell, there were many factors of obesity children which include the food choices, changes in children’s activity and the parents. We should work together to prevent among our children. There are preventions that we can take such as starting to follow a correct diet guideline in consuming healthy food, seek for assistance from a health trainer, go for a regular medical checkup , consume less oil and sugar in cooking, motivate each other to be healthy, exercise regularly and have a positive mind and attitude. We can achieve whatever we want as long as there is willingness that comes from deep within our heart. Author: Queencie Dohny

TASK 2. Read the letter below and answer the questions that follow. DATE
27th. of April 2018 SALUTATION
Dear Linda, OPENING Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
I am replying to your letter dated 25th. of April 2018 concerning your question about ’Nasi Kerabu’. I can still remember when I brought you to one of the restaurant that served the best ’Nasi Kerabu’ in Kelantan, you was fascinated with the taste of it. You said to me that it was so good until you cannot stop eating it. As a new friend of yours, I was so happy because you can accept the taste of our food, even though it was your first time. I really miss that moment, my friend. Well, about ‘Nasi Kerabu’, the dish was originated from the land of sea along the east coast and northern states. Throughout decades, it is enjoyed by the old folk in a simple village but today, this unique dish is enjoyed by the urbanites all around the country.
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
CLOSING
SIGNING OFF SIGNATURE
‘Nasi Kerabu’ is one of the traditional foods of Kelantanese Peranakans. The marriage of Chinese men with Thailand’s women living in Kelantan explains why Kelantanese Peranakan food has a strong Thai influence. Besides, it also gives us a clear reason why ‘nasi kerabu’ is quite similar to ‘Khao Jam’, one of the most popular rice dishes in southern Thailand. The only difference between ‘Nasi Kerabu’ and ‘Khao Jam’ is the condiments like herbs and dressing and also the colour of rice. Besides that, the unique blue colour of ‘nasi kerabu’ comes from the extract of the purplish blue flower known as butterfly pea. The rice is soaked and cooked with the extract blue colour of the flower along with Kaffir lime leaves and a stalk of lemongrass. In Kelantan, there are other variations of ‘nasi kerabu’ which are yellow (with turmeric) and white (plain white rice). ‘Nasi Kerabu’ is a complex dish as it involves various components on a single plate. Like you already know, it consists of the blue rice, herb salad, a coconut and fish relish. Besides that, it also contains a spicy ‘sambal’ sauce, anchovy’s sauce or known as ‘budu’ and we can add our preference side dish like salted duck egg, stuffed green chilli, fish cracker and crispy fried fish or chicken. All the ingredients and dressings are tossed together with the rice and we can enjoy a delicious ‘nasi kerabu’ with various accompaniments. By the way, I guess you might miss the taste of ‘budu’ right? Do not worry. I will wait for you to come again here.

SUMMARY
Read the article below and write a summary of 150 words based on the article. THE MEANING OF TRUE FRIENDSHIP In today’s society, many people, teens especially, believe that having someone to call a friend is important but, as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that this isn’t always true. There’s a huge difference between friends, best friends, schoolmates, classmates and associates. They may all sound the same but that doesn’t mean they will automatically become your friends. From my experience, ever since I stepped my foot into the world of schooling, I haven’t really met a true friend. But once summer arrives, these “so –called friends” are nowhere to be found. This may not apply to all but the majority of teens have a huge life change over the summer. Some of which change physically. Every school year, I adapt to any schooling environment for the simple reason that it’s a whole lot easier for me to be myself. But in this past school year I’ve faced a difficult challenge of trying to figure out who I truly am. The same thing might happen to teens all over the world but me personally, if I didn’t listen to my teacher’s advice in middle school which is “You won’t truly know who you are until you begin to live life on your own” I might end up facing the same challenge of figuring out who I truly am. In other words, friends shouldn’t be able to change the definition of our personality. The only thing that should change is our body, level of maturity, and our mental stage of being. A true friend will accept you for who you are, not for what you have or what you personally believe. A true friend is a person that you can meet in any period of life but, from the moment that you meet this person you will begin to build a friendship based on trust, honesty, and truthfulness. This is what I define a true friendship. (SOURCE: http://www.teenink.com/hot_topics/what_matters/article/349806/The-meaning-oftrue-friendship/)

ANSWER SCHEME
Writing—SUMMARY Today many people believe that it is important to have friends especially for teens. However, the writer feels that it is not true. For him, he never met a true friend since there is a huge gap between friends, best friends, classmates and associates. Fr him, in order to adapt in every school years, he reminded himself with his teacher’s advice, ‘you won’t truly know who you are until you begin to live on your own’. Based on his teacher’s advice, he believe that friends should not be able to change his personality as true friends will always accept you for who you are and build a friendship based on trust, honesty and truthfulness.

When the train arrived, there was pushing and pulling. Many passengers got down the train, several got into it. Hawkers also began to shout at the top of their voices. My brother got down the train. I met him. I was standing very close to his compartment. We hired a coolie. Then we came out of the station and left for our home.

When I reached the railway station there was a huge rush of people going into and coming out of the railway station. Since it was the occasion of Holi, the rush was somewhat unusual. I had no option but to
Life at the railway station seems to move at a very quick pace. People move here and there checking up time of the arrival and departure of train. Hawkers are busy with their business. Railway coolies in their uniform were rushing with luggage here and there. Some had to give their charge to their colleagues, while several had to take charge for another journey. It is their routine work.
There are some emotional scenes at the station also. When the train whistles off the station, those who come to see off their relatives wave a goodbye to them. For many the parting is tearful. People who come to receive their kith and kin have a happy smiling face. Adapted from : http:// www.shareyouressays.com/ online-essays/485-wordssample-essay-on-scene-at-a -railway-station/655

Anna’s Holiday
Anna is planning her holiday for next summer and she does not know whether she should have a lazy holiday or an exciting one. Last year Anna went on holiday to Langkawi Island with her best friends, Mira and Ling. They stayed in a brilliant fourstar hotel, which had three swimming pools. It was quite expensive but they really enjoyed themselves and they all got great suntans!
This year, Mira is going away with her parents to Indonesia so it’ll be just Ling and Anna. Ling wants to go on an adventure holiday in Sabah, the type where you have to climb up on the mountain . Ling said it would be interesting and better than having a lazy holiday because they would learn about the world around us and take risk in climbing up the mountains.
Anna is not sure whether she wants to go to Sabah. For her, a holiday means relaxing on a beach and she wants to have a peace yet awesome holiday. However, she has made a decision to follow Ling to Sabah as she realised that it is time for her to try something different and gain new experiences.
