Free Time Activities • Life without a hobby is like food without the salt. It is a pursuit outside one’s regular work. A hobby gives one joy and pleasure; one does not get tired of it. It is a pastime, relaxation and leisure. In this way, while one is learning something, he is also making best use of his time. There are many hobbies like drawing, painting, gardening, stamp collecting, photography, reading, sewing, crafts, embroidery, knitting, cooking, pet care, coin collecting, etc. My favourite hobbies are gardening, coin collecting, photography and traveling. Gardening gives me immense pleasure. When I saw seed sown by me growing into beautiful plants and blooming flowers, it gives me a great sense of fulfilment. I enjoy tendering my plants and watering my garden every day. It gives me satisfaction and helps in keeping myself active and busy. I grow flowers and vegetables in my garden. The greenery of plants and sweet fragrance of flowers are the tonics for eyes and mind. In a world full of tension and pollution, it is a great relief to see beautiful flowers and lovely plants. Traveling is my other passion. Whenever I have an opportunity to visit a new place, whether a village, city, mountain or seaside, I never miss it. It is so thrilling to see a new place and meet different kind of people. Whenever I travel round a new place, I take my camera and shot interesting pictures of people, building, monuments, bazaar etc. It gives me immense satisfaction and pleasure. Though these hobbies are expensive, I love them.

Kuala Lumpur, 21 March 2016 – First his parents wanted him to be a doctor and not a sportsman. Then, his sports school coach told him he was too small to make it. Even when he first competed internationally, he drew curious stares for being the odd one out in a sport dominated by tall, physically built athletes. None of that mattered to national track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang as he stayed true to his goal to be an international champion. Today, he is the current world no.3 in keirin and he recently won Bronze in the UCI Track Cycling World Championship 2016 in London. Azizul has also qualified for keirin in the upcoming Rio Olympics 2016 this August. The two-time Olympian shared his life journey, achievements as well as his challenges in reaching his goals through a very intimate sharing session with an audience of over 200 aspiring young athletes, students at UiTM Shah Alam’s Faculty of Sport Science and Recreation recently. “At 15 years old, I was determined to pursue cycling and left for Bukit Jalil Sports School. My parents were not too happy with my decision to become a sportsman because they wanted me to become a doctor but I was adamant with my dream of becoming a national champion in track cycling, then. “On my first day at sports school, I was told by my (then) coach that I will never make it far due to my ‘small size’ as compared to my peers who are more physically built. I was constantly looked down upon on my figure which fuelled me to prove that my size is not a limitation and I sacrificed most of my younger days to train and work hard just so I could prove these people wrong.” “And it paid off as the world begin to acknowledge me through my achievements in the World Championships and my first ever participation in the Beijing Olympics 2008 in China where I was Malaysia’s flag-bearer at a young age of 20. Pesta Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) is celebrated when the Kadazandusuns give thanks to the gods and spirits for blessings and a good paddy harvest, asking for guidance. They will dance, eat and drink amidst the festive. During this harvest festival, the Pesta Ka’amatan, known locally as “Tadau Ka’amatan”, Sabah natives wear their traditional costumes and enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere, which usually stretches from dawn to dawn. He started playing for the national team 16 years ago and his monthly allowance was just RM80 back then but look how far Datuk Lee Chong Wei has come today. In a recent interview with Sin Chew Daily, the world No. 1 player addressed the topic that is ever present on his fans minds, about when he will call it a day. The thought also weighs on the national shuttler's mind as the age of 34, he is already considered a "veteran" in the badminton field, but he does not give up, not even when he suffers injuries, Sin Chew Daily reports. The big question that looms is whether Chong Wei will still lead the nation's charge into the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. "Many hope I will continue to play. It will depend on my physical condition. After the (World Super series Finals in Dubai late last year) I suffered many injuries. I feel that I should be gradually retiring," he revealed.

On how he hopes to be remembered, the national hero hopes that his fans will not forget him and defined his success in his characteristic humble way. "I have never thought about becoming world No 1 or a national hero. I only wanted to give my best and I have no regrets going into badminton," he summed it up with a smile. He also talks about the remarkable feat of sustaining his career for 16 years, his relationship oncourt with his Olympic nemesis Lin Dan and the ardous climb back to No. 1 spot from 180th place after his doping ban. Having being awarded and celebrated in badminton circles throughout the world with his name instantly recognisable from Denmark to New Zealand, Chong Wei remains true to his hometown roots and talks about raising his two young kids in "a poor man's style.“ He expressed his wish during the interview with Sin Chew Daily that he wants his children to go to school by bus and not to be chauffeur-driven, and to be independent. Definitely, his legions of fans will not forget him as the most successful player with his impressive winning rate.

According to media reports, he has played a grand total of 731 matches and won 614 matches and only lost 117 which translates to a winning rate of 84% during every match! (Adapted from malaysiandigest.com)

to some conversations related to weather

Read the text below of different nations deal with winter weather. In countries where wintry conditions are more common, they're experts at dealing with it. Here are seven steps they take to combat the cold and keep things moving. In New York City, the mayor’s office will not accept complaints that they haven’t cleaned the snowy sidewalks. This is because it’s not their responsibility, it’s yours. Cleaning out the pavement in front of your property is expected of you as a resident. You have to have all of the requisite equipment to clean and there are given timeframes within which you must completed the job. Due to the climate of Finland, the challenges of driving are more numerous than in the UK. As such, it’s much trickier to get a driving license. In order to obtain a full license, it takes at least two years and it is mandatory to practice on slippery roads. There are two tests: one that grants you a temporary two-year license to then complete a further test. This second test involves advanced driving lessons, including having to practice driving at night. The result is that Finnish drivers are fully prepared for the challenges of winter driving! The alternative to gritting roads is to heat them. Iceland, Japan and some Scandinavian countries have implemented this idea, each using a slightly different approach. One of the most popular approaches is a network of water pipes under the surface. Hot water is piped through them which keeps the surface warm. While this is a very efficient model for dealing with snow and ice, it’s very expensive to install and causes long periods of disruption.

In Sweden and Germany, it is compulsory to have winter tires on your car at set times throughout the year. Winter tires are made with a different type of rubber which doesn’t harden at lower temperatures, maintaining their grip on the road. They also have a different tread pattern, which has wider grooves and narrower slits on them, providing better grip in wintry weather. If you don’t have them in Germany, you’ll be fined 40 Euros. However this is doubled if you create traffic jams or it leads to an accident taking place.

Past Simple Task 1 When my family moved (move) to Perak, we knew (know) very little about the cement factory that existed there. We were more excited about the fact that we could actually afford the land, enjoy the fresh air and be far away from busy Kuala Lumpur. My father thought (think) that we could use the pond at the back of our house to start a fish farm. However, shortly after moving to Perak, my then two year-old brother, Afiq, became (become) sick. He suffered (suffer) from pneumonia, unexplained coughing and shortness of breath. A doctor checked (check) Afiq’s medical file and said (say) that it could be because we lived in Perak. I wondered (wonder) about his statement and began (begin) my research.

I discovered (discover) that the number of children who used inhalers are growing. Our fish died (die). Layers of whitish substances covered (cover) the water. When Afiq was five, we rushed (rush) him to the hospital and the doctors put (put) him under close observations six times in two months. Doctors confirmed that fine particles from the cement factory had formed deposits in Afiq’s lungs.

Listen Task 1 • Sarah: Hi, do you want to go and get some lunch? • Lucy: Yes that would be great. • Sarah: I want to try the new café on the corner of the High Street. • Lucy: Are you sure, it’s very small and we may have to sit outside. • Sarah: Yes that’s why I want to go. It’s autumn already and the weather might not be good for eating outside again until the spring. • Lucy: It looks as if it might rain soon. There has been some drizzle this morning. • Sarah: No, the sky is clear and you can see the sun. That will make it warm. • Lucy: But there’s a gusty wind that makes it a bit chilly. • Sarah: We can wear out coats. It’s been overcast for weeks. I want to sit in the sun for a bit. • Lucy: Ok, but if it starts to snow we have to go inside, alright?

Listen Task 2 Amanda: Hi. Isn’t the snow great? I’ve been playing in it all morning. Andrew: Yes, new snow makes everything look very pretty and white. Sarah: Snow is nice at the start, but when it’s turning to slush it gets nasty. Amanda: Maybe, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen snow. It’s great. Sarah: Do you ever have snow in Thailand? Amanda: No, we never have snow. It’s too hot. Andrew: So this must be fun? Amanda: Yes very fun. I stayed up late last night watching the snowstorm as the gusts of wind blew the snow. Sarah: Then this morning the sky was clear and the sun was shining on the new snow. That was good to see. Amanda: How long will the snow last before it melts? Andrew: If the weather and temperature stay cold at about zero degrees Celsius then the snow could be here for several days or a week. Amanda: Great. I want to play in it as much as possible. Do you want to come outside with me? Sarah: Sure, I can do that. Andrew: Yes, that’ll be something good to do.

Listen Task 3 Ahmad: Shhh! I want to hear the weather forecast for this week. Zaki: What’s so important about this week? Ahmad: Shhh! Radio Announcer: Tomorrow, this warm front will move out and a cold front will move in, bringing with it windy conditions with a chance of thunderstorms. Ahmad: Yeah! Radio Announcer: On Tuesday, things will clear up in the morning and we’ll have sunny skies. Ahmad: Uh! Radio Announcer: But it will be chilly in the afternoon and the skies will be overcast. There’ll be a chance of precipitation in the evening, with very high levels of humidity. Ahmad: Hooray! Radio Announcer: On Friday, the temperature will drop sharply and we’ll be lucky if we reach 27 degrees. Ahmad: Oh yeah! Zaki: What was all that about? Ahmad: If the weather is nice this weekend, my in-laws plan to drive up to spend a few days at our house. Zaki: [laughs] Oh, I see.

RULE 3 - If a two syllable adjective ends with a “y”, you need to remove the “y” and add –ier. - Example: • busy + ier= busier • happy + ier = happier • easy + ier = easier

The girl is happier than the boy.

RULE 4 - If an adjective has two or more syllable, you have to add the word “more” or “less” before the adjective. - If the adjective ends with a “y”, you will only need to add the word “more” or “less” if the adjective has three syllable and more. - Example: • active +more = more active than / less active than • beautiful + more = more beautiful than / less beautiful than • famous +more = more famous than / less famous than • intelligent + more = more intelligent than / less intelligent than • satisfactory + more = more satisfactory than / less satisfactory than

READING (CONSERVATION OF NATURE) CONSERVATION OF NATURE Conservation of nature is basically the conservation of resources such as air, water, sunlight, land, flora, fauna life and minerals. All these resources are obtained from nature without any interference from the mankind. These resources are further employed to produce various things that make the lives of human beings as well as other living beings comfortable.

Natural resources are broadly categorized into renewable resources and non-renewable resources. Renewable resources are the ones that replenish naturally. These include air, water and sunlight. The use of these resources is encouraged over the non-renewable resources as the latter do not replenish and are fast depleting. Examples of nonrenewable resources are fossil fuels, oil, natural gas, coal and nuclear energy.

Conservation of nature is an issue that must be taken seriously. While the governments of different countries are employing various means to conserve nature, individuals must also come forward to contribute their bit in this direction. Some of the ways in which the common man can help in the conservation of nature is by planting trees, restricting the use of paper, stopping wastage of water and electricity, stopping ill practices such as hunting of animals, and employing rain water harvesting systems. It does not take much to put the above mentioned ideas to practice. However, if each one of us contributes our bit to it, the difference it will bring about would be tremendous.

WRITING ( ORDER OF ADJECTIVES) Read Sella’s email to her friend, Patricia. Where she was last few days?

Dear Patricia, How are you? Sorry that I haven’t written you for so long. Last few days, I went to the capital of Malaysia- Kuala Lumpur with my family. It was a great time. Let me tell you how I spent that amazing journey. Before that, let me explain about the geography of Kuala Lumpur. The geography of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is characterized by a huge valley — known as the Klang Valley — bordered by the Titiwangsa Mountains in the east, several minor ranges in the north and the south and the Malacca Straits in the west. The name Kuala Lumpur literally means muddy confluence. Kuala Lumpur is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, facing the Malacca Straits. Its location on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which has wider flat land than the East Coast, has contributed to its faster development relative to other cities in Malaysia.

There are a lot of beautiful old buildings. We went to see the beautiful big silver building, that is Petronas Twin Tower which once the world’s tallest building and also the amazing tall silver Kuala Lumpur Tower. After that, we went to see the really big old yellowish building, that is Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The building was known simply as Government Offices in its early years. Then, we went to Bukit Bintang which is the shopping and entertainment district of Kuala Lumpur. You know! I bought a nice new red baju kurung for you and I hope that you will like it. We also visited some wonderful places such as Batu Caves, Sunway Lagoon, Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, Aquaria KLCC and Istana Negara. Besides that, we really enjoyed some delicious Malaysian foods such as Nasi Lemak, Satay, Hokkien mee, Banana leaf food, Tosai, Roti canai and more. You can’t even imagine how many photos I took ! We really appreciated being there because of all the amazing sights and moments we had. I could write more but I really need to go to the shop to buy a beautiful long black French silk dress for me to wear tonight during my friend’s birthday party. Hope we will meet soon. Lots of love, Sella

by boat, by bridge, by bike, by bus, on wheels, on wings, each one of us, has dreams in our pockets and stories to share as we open the doors to school everywhere…. and a rain might mist, a wind might blow; the sun might shine on our morning hello, and a storm might brew in the sky, let it try, but the magic of wonder won’t pass us by, we’re on our way to school.
