Example of a journal. 5 April – 11 a.m. Austin Tom, the one I considered as my second brother. I met my best friend Austin Tom in the third grade. He was new to my elementary school and I already had all of my friends. One day at recess I didn’t want him to play basketball with us because we already had enough people. My friend Rashad insisted on letting him play so he did. Austin never played basketball before, he didn’t know any of the rules. Later on in the year we became friends and he would come to my house after school on Fridays. I taught him how to play basketball and he fell in love with the sport. Our friendship is getting stronger and stronger each year and I consider him as my second brother.

Here’s what you can do now, to prepare. Make sure you’ve got the right home insurance, keep your eye on the weather and sign up for flood alert. Buying sandbags might help, but check government advice about how best to protect your home. Get an emergency flood kit ready and prepare important documents in case you have to leave in a rush.
Make sure you know how to quickly turn off your water, gas and electricity mains. Clear leaves in your drains and if it’s safe, check the one on your street. We maintain thousands of drains but cannot check all of them, all of the time. During a flood, act quickly. Floodwater can rise fast. So, if there’s an emergency and you’re in danger call 999 and follow the advice. Move family, pets and important stuff upstairs. Put people before property and check on neighbours. Stay safe and don’t walk or drive through fast flowing water.
