Devoted to building US-China friendships - BY Burn Loeffke (Retired US Army General) American Friends of China established Room 301 in the famous H o t e l T h a y e r a t We s t P o i n t . I t celebrates the 50th anniversary of president Nixon’s trip to China. It is dedicated to two soldiers: Sergeant Larry Morford US Army and Corporal Lei Feng Chinese Army. Why them? Both were role models. Both died at age 22 serving their country. They helped the poor and believed that friendships were the best way to prevent wars. We honor them by building homes for the poor in the Caribbean. Private citizens in the US and China contribute to this effort. America in Chinese is Mei Guo which means “Beautiful country”. Students in China have to study English. In Room 301 at the Hotel Thayer, guests are encouraged to learn five Chinese sentences in order to get a prize. Little did I realize that hearing as a cadet at West Point in the 1950s that we were fighting Chinese in Korea and that it would be the start of a friendship with China. It was in 1954 that then Secretary of State J.F. Dulles created the “No shaking hands policy”: “You are forbidden to have contact with the Chinese. If you come face to face with

Chinese, take a cold attitude towards them.” This policy stayed in place for 18 years until president Nixon in 1972 shook hands with Chinese Officials on his visit to China. In 1972, I was a staff officer in Dr. Kissinger’s National Security Council in the White House. Our country was being torn apart with protests on the war in Vietnam. The White House was secretly trying to start relations with China as one way to help end the war. In 1973, months after Mr. Nixon’s visit to China, I led the first official visit of young leaders to the People’s Republic of China. In that group was then Colonel Colin Powell, who would later become Secretary of State. This was for both of us the start of a friendship with China that lasted many years. Since then, when Chinese visited Washington, they often asked to meet with General Powell. My dealings with China gave me a new name. Our family name LOEFFKE is hard to pronounce. When I met Chinese people, many would end up calling me “LOVE KEY”. I liked it and adopted its use. I would explain that Love here was not the amorous kind but the caring for others. It was fitting that I should use “LOVE KEY” as my chief of staff sent me to China with one main mission: to build friendships. I did many things to accomplish this. I would run early in the mornings

with hundreds of Chinese. I swam with them. And kept asking until I was allowed to parachute with Chinese paratroopers. The parachute jump with my new Chinese friends was a highlight of my career. Becoming the first American to share the training and then drop from a Chinese plane created a bond that could not have been equaled on land. It was after this experience that I vowed that when I retired from the Army, I would devote a large part of my life to bettering relations with China. Before retiring, I arranged for Chinese Champion athletes to run with US paratroopers. At that time I was the Chief of staff of the US Army Parachute Corps so this was easy to arrange. The runs in Washington, across the US and Latin America were ideal ways to make friends. The run in the Americas began in Washington DC, continued in the Bahamas and ended in Chile. We chose Washington as the starting place of the runs because it is the home of the Organization of American States. We also chose it to honor the founder of our nation and to introduce two other great leaders. All three of these men had much in common. They loved their troops and shared their discomforts. Two of them served in armies they would later fight against. General Washington fought as a British officer and later would command the new American army to

fight the British. San Martin fought for the Spanish Army and later fought the Spaniards at the head of his Army of the Andes. San Martin and Chinese Marshal Zhu De led their soldiers over incredible terrain in long marches to defeat their enemies. Two of these leaders at one time gave their warm coats to soldiers who had lost them and were freezing. The year 2022 is the ideal time to come together and celebrate the 50th anniversary of president Nixon’s visit to China by arranging 50 mile relay races throughout the US and China. We have started in Florida by having a relay team of 10 volunteers to run 50 miles. Each participant completes five miles to accomplish the 50 miles to commemorate the 50th US-China
