What is a Female Executive? I am the one that makes the bread, weaves the fabric, creates the peace, negotiates the smiles, shuts it down and wakes it all back up. I am the Swiss Army Knife of mankind. I am the one that gives birth and keeps life goingwhether I have to nudge it with my heart, my mind, my blood or my foot! I keep the bass rhythm of life moving. I am that female that executes the needed, the necessary and the fantastic. I am THAT female executive.

From the Editor and Chief Creative Officer Welcome to the August 2016 Issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. This month's theme is “It’s Good to be Queen” Honoring the 90th birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations. In addition to that, E Magazine is also looking at the management styles of 4 Ultra Powerful women. We’ve also included, as always, a broad selection of wonderful, insightful articles in this month’s issue. Before we get started with this issue, I wanted to share the wonderful practice of standing in great expectation: rules for creating infinite possibilities. Many people define wealth as money, strictly a monetary experience. In actuality wealth is so much more comprehensive than that. it encompasses health, peace of mind, joy, happiness, sanity, the lack of prolonged anxiety and much more. In addition to that we want these same intergenerational blessings to pass into our children's lives and our children’s children. Here are some great concepts to ponder: 1) The more opportunities you create for a great event, the more possibilities you create for divine intervention and assistance. 1 door-1 path-1 possibility Verses 5 doors-5 paths and 5 possibilities. 5 possibilities will generate a stronger probability than 1. 2) Great people and great connections are great doors. 3) Saying something and activating it can be two different things. For example, I can say 200 sit ups ( 3 words). But doing them-is actually a process I may have to build up to. 4) Everything hears everything. Your thoughts actually create. I hope you enjoy this issue. -Althea Ledford Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

“I sometimes feel like a post standing in a raging sea, lashed on all sides by the waves. But I am firmly moored, and the years have helped to weather me... I want to keep living fully. At times we are so distracted and disturbed by what happens to us, that we struggle to find ourselves. Yet, we have to. We cannot sink into what surrounds us. It is in you that things must come to clarity, not for you to get lost into things.” Etty Hillesum
Immediately after the Ma
In September 2014 the spokesman of ISIS Abu Mohammed al-Adnani said: “If you can kill a disbelieving American or European - especially the spiteful and filthy French - or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever from the disbelievers waging war, including the citizens of the countries that entered into a coalition against the Islamic State, then rely upon Allah, and kill him in any manner Page 28 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
or way, however it may be. Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him. If you are unable to do any of that then burn their houses, their trades, their fields.” By now the massacres perpetrated by Islamic terrorists are countless: San Bernardino, Orlando, Paris, Nice. In Germany a man assaulted with an ax the passengers on a train between Treuchtlingen and Würzburg, Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
In the meantime the public are urged to express their grief and their anger with flags, colored chalks and slogans of peace. Later, when the tension is diminished, slowly the news reveal that it was indeed Islamic terrorism. But by that time most of the people are back to their lives and daily struggles, without thinking anymore about doing something to prevent the next massacre.
assacre wounding many. Then a gunman in a mall in Munich claimed the life of 9, including 5 underage. People highly debate the issue on social media, which are by now the thermometer of the public opinion. They also began to understand that there is something amiss and a pattern has developed. The initial information released to the public and concerning terrorists is always misleading. At first, it seems that they are NEVER Islamic terrorists. Page 29 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Something has changed with the massacre of Nice, or at least we hope so. This time the social media highlighted that the majority opinion was to stop with evanescent expressions of grief, demanding actions instead of words. People continue to die because we as whole just pretended for a long time to want something to be done about it, while the West keeps minimizing and thus exacerbating the issue of those who want to change our way of life by any (violent) means necessary. I learned the hard way that when a monster holds you at gunpoint and you hand out a flower, they will never turn into an angel.
WHO WAS THE TERRORIST Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was born and raised in Tunisia. A Tunisian national, 31 years old, a professional truck driver. He had moved to Nice in France in 2005 to marry a FrancoTunisian with whom he had three children before divorcing in 2012. The driver's uncle, Sadok Bouhlel, told The Associated Press that his nephew had been radicalized about two weeks before the attack by an Algerian member of the Islamic State group in Nice, although further evidence shows that it is more likely to have been months at least. The father of the terrorist is member of the Ennahda Islamic party, which is one of the parties that currently governs Tunisia. Some of his relatives were sentenced under President Ben Ali and got an amnesty after his departure.
Days after the Massacre
Page 30 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The terrorist sent to his family in Tunisia $100,000 a few days before the massacre. Between 2010 and 2016 he broke the law several times including domestic violence, theft and violence against another driver beating him with a stick. Incredibly, all these crimes are not enough in Europe to grant deportation. According to preliminary statements of the French authorities, Bouhlel had no known links with Islamic terrorists even if the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Journalist David Thomson, a specialist in jihad and psychological disorders had something to say about the madman narrative. In an interview with Nice Matin Thomson says : "Some are trying to play down the jihadist terrorist character by highlighting his psychological disorders, but being unbalanced never stopped being jihadist. There is really no typical profile of terrorists. We must remember that Salah Abdeslam smoked weed and was known to party two weeks before the attacks " In Nice 85 people were slaughtered and 307 injured, many of them severely. action of Bouhlel, calling him a "soldier" of ISIS. But after a few days the investigators arrested four men and one woman for complicity in Italy and other 2 in Nice. All charged with participation in a terrorist organization and other charges to be issued at the end of the investigation. The immediate version fed to the public opinion tried to pass this Islamic terrorist for a common depressive and unstable individual on medications. Nevertheless, his actions had been planned to the fine detail and he was cold-blooded and determined, working with at least 6 other accomplices. Page 31 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
THE UNACCEPTABLE If the massacre wasn't bad enough, many other events added insult to injury. 1) Christian Estrosi, President of the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur claimed the state was in “shock” in the fight against terrorism, after president Hollande lifted the state of emergency a few hours before deciding to extend it for three more months after the attack in Nice. 2) After the massacre, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that the National Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Police was protecting the Promenade des Anglais. He added that polemics against the police and security checks were futile. It has been proven that his claims were at the very least incorrect, because by 9 PM the National Police had been replaced by a local police car with two officers. The metal barriers were also apparently open. 3) The truck parked in the pedestrian area of the Promenade for 9 hours. When local police officers approached the driver, he replied that he was going to deliver ice cream. The police did not check the documents nor the interior of the truck to verify his claims, even though at night there are no deliveries to small stores in France. For all they known, the truck could have been filled with explosives. Page 32 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
4) The newspaper Le Figaro denounced that the Nice City Hall had received an order from the Police Anti-Terrorist Directorate (Sous-Direction Anti-Terroriste- SDAT) to fully delete 24 hours of footage from the six surveillance cameras that filmed the attack on July 14, plus "all the scenes from the beginning of the attack that took place on the Promenade des Anglais". Mayor Philippe Pradal refused and informed the authorities through a letter written by lawyer Blanchetier. 4) Europol declared that there is no evidence that this attack and the other killings of these months were done by the ISIS, because there was no direct connection between the perpetrators and the Islamic State. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
5) In a statement given to Radio Mosaique on July 15, 2016 the Tunisian ambassador to France, Mohamed Ali Chihi, expressed his regret and dissatisfaction with the French media that had presented the perpetrator of the Nice attack as a Tunisian national. “Even if it turns out that the author is a French of Tunisian origin, we will ask the French authorities to simply mention his French identity only because the origins are irrelevant.” A totally unacceptable remark from a diplomat. Not a word of condemnation for the action, nor of solidarity and condolence for the victims. Page 33 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Not to mention that in the end it was established that Bouhlel was born, raised and lived in Tunisia and only had a working permit in France. (DIS)INTEGRATION All governments have experts in homeland security and are well aware that the first rule to protect their territory is to keep it under control. By now everyone has understood that this has become impossible due to the absurd opening of borders to millions of people under the dubious pretense of saving lives. If they really wanted to save lives, the Western governments would have invested honestly in the countries of these people, which probably would have Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
costed less money than trying to gather, move and host their population. Not to mention it would have spared many of them from dying during their journey of hope. Now it has been ascertained that the majority of migrants arriving in Europe are not refugees, but economic migrants who are moved around by unscrupulous organizations earning millions with the excuse of helping them. In Europe the situation is already extremely complicated for the a high unemployment rate and an elevated number of suicides due to the economic crisis. Immigration has led to a surge in crime, making life very difficult for citizens. Controlled integration is possible only for people who agree to submit to the law of the land and the customs of the new country, but it is a charade when they are not only unwilling to do so, but they even insist on changing the society of the host country by imposing their own laws on the locals. This is what is happening in Europe, but also in the United States and Australia, where newcomers with the help of old Page 34 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Immigrants who have often already acquired the citizenship try to enforce the SHARIA in the West.
TERRORISM IS THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG On new year of 2015 in Cologne 1,200 women were assaulted by about 2,000 men. The prosecution was able to identify 204 of them, almost all of Moroccan and Algerian origin with an Iraqi minority. Their justification was that they had been aroused by the scent and by the clothing of the women. A few days ago the sentences were delivered. 4 men out of a total of 2000 were convicted. One year in Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
in the name of Islam or at the cry of ALLAH AKBAR does not confirm a link to ISIS or evidence they were trained by that organization. This is a lie. One peculiarity of ISIS is to radicalize its followers outside the Caliphate through the media or in the mosques. They do not care who the person is before radicalization and what drives them to submit. All are game: men, women, children. With some of them it is enough to brainwash through religious teachings. Others are offered what they want: the sense of belonging to a group, respect, money and the promise of a new life. It is not true that only those who have not studied and the jobless join the following.
THE HARD TRUTH
prison, a fine of 5000 Euros and for someone nothing else than 50 hours of education on integration. The case of Cologne was the most striking for the high number of episodes on the same night, but in Europe being raped by migrants from Africa or from the Middle East has become a pandemic. No one is safe including children and women and men in their eighties. Moreover, there is a tendency to sell terrorism as something else. In the West it has somehow become customary for governments to declare that the terrorist or terrorists in question had depression problems and the fact that they committed the massacre
Page 35 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The truth is hard, but it's also the only thing thing that brings deliverance. You may find the view expressed in this article to be harsh. Yet, don't mistake harshness for fallacy. We will leave you with a few words from someone that had the courage to speak to truth, however hard and harsh it may be. The day after the massacre of Nice, Hocine Drouiche the Vice-President of the Imams' Conference of France and Imam Nimes of Algerian origin decided to resign and stated: "I announce my resignation and my rejection of these incompetent institutions that do nothing for the social peace and that keep repeating that extremism does not exist, that is just a product of the mass media... I hope that the imams of France abandon their doubts and, above all, that they do not speak in their Friday sermons of topics that have nothing to do with the attack. Their role is to fight hatred and religious fundamentalism." Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

As someone who has carved out a wonderful career in the fashion industry, I am constantly being asked for beauty advice. I will never endorse a product unless I have used and believed in them, and am thrilled to say that Bend Skincare, Bend Beauty’s signature product line is absolutely something I stand behind. I’ve been a long-time fan of the beauty effects that this product has delivered. Over the years, I have had everyone in my innercircle, from my closest friends to my immediate family, using this incredible product. That said, when Bend Skincare re-branded (formerly known as Ascenta Skin), it was very easy for me to continue its use with no hesitation. Within weeks of adopting Bend Skincare recommended routine, I noticed a dewy youthful glow and smoothness to my skin’s texture.

Aside from the much-documented benefits of the Omega 3’s and 6’s found in Bend Skincare through the DHA, EPA and GLA ingredients, there is also Zeaxanthin, Luetin and Vitamin D. Why We Need More Women Directors In Hollywood! The first in the new series by 360 Degree Karma
I recently had the honor of being interviewed on USC TV (University of Southern California) by young women of the school aspiring to be involved in television and media as producers, directors, and other positions in the industry. As you probably know, Hollywood is still an old boys club, and it is difficult for a woman to get ahead. For instance, it was brought to my attention that Fox and Paramount have about 50 movies slated for the next couple of years and none of them have a female director. That’s right- 100% male directors. Hard to believe in this day and age, isn’t it? The problem with this scenario is not only the injustice of it- but that it truly affects the quality of the films to be missing all the qualities that a female perspective brings to the table. Where research show men are decisive, analytical, and aggressive- women Page 44 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
on the other had are more collaborative, patient, and passionate. It is important to have both at the decision making table in the movie industry and in any industry. The 360 Karma endeavor is to nurture the idea of women helping women to lift them into more positions of influence. This is so important to impact the world is a positive way. I really enjoyed the experience and their exuberance about my career in film. I loved their questions about who I admired, and how I accomplished my documentary film projects, and what my advice I had for them. I mean, who doesn’t like that advice question- really?! Lol I hope that by doing this interview I impacted some of these young ladies to follow their dream, their calling , their legacy to be a creator of extraordinary films and television. She has also reigned through various wars and conflicts involving many of her realms. She is the world's oldest reigning monarch as well as Britain's longestlived. In 2015, she surpassed the reign of her great-greatgrandmother, Queen Victoria, to become the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant and female head of state in world history.
Her Majesty and British Prime Minister David Cameron
The Short Bio Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926[a]) is, and has been since her accession in 1952, Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and Head of the Commonwealth. She is also Queen of 12 countries that have become independent since her accession: Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada,Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Elizabeth was born in London to the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and was the elder of their two daughters. She was educated privately at home. Times of personal significance have included the births and marriages of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, her coronation in 1953, and the celebration of milestones such as her Silver, Golden and DiamondJubilees in 1977, 2002, and 2012, respectively. Moments of sadness for her include the death of her father, aged 56; the assassination of Prince Philip's uncle, Lord Mountbatten; the breakdown of her children's marriages in 1992 (her annus horribilis); the death in 1997 of her son's ex-wife, Diana, Princess of Wales; and the deaths of her mother and sister in 2002. Elizabeth has occasionally faced republican sentiments and severe press criticism of theroyal family, but support for the monarchy remains high, as does her personal popularity.
Management Style Forward thinker, long term planner, adaptive and astute listener. Queen Elizabeth II has always been forward thinking. She was the first to televise her own coronation which was the beginning of a life time relationship with the media. Queen Elizabeth has been the face and voice of the British monarchy for over 60 years. She has successfully brought the monarchy into the 21st century. Needless to say, she has inspired women all over the world with the silent message- “Stand your ground and rule with grace and dignity. Based on interviews, comments for over half a century, the following comments on her management style can be summarized as follows: She listens very attentively She plans and prepares for the next step up. Just as she did before becoming queen. (what an interesting thought “Just in case I become queen- let me be ready”) She asks questions and does linger on the
details when warranted to make sure it meets her expectations. Page 51 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
No one is beyond getting a look. During meetings she listens and does allow
the other party to talk and then she gives her opinion. She has managed the monarchy with a real awareness of public opinion, temperament and change. Because of her guidance, the monarchy is not exit in a protective bubble. It is current, present and not out of touch. She’s made 21st century decisions, for the future Kings and Queens. For example the oldest child girl or boy can inherit the throne from this point forward. First Born Granddaughters can be queen even if they have little brothers. Finally, because she has brought the monarchy into the 21st century and with help of global connectivity, she has become everyone’s queen. In speaking with a Londoner a few weeks ago, I asked him “ does she still seem to hold the same influence?” and his comment was “oh yes! When she’s on the air you can feel it (power and influence) oozing through the television”. And all I can say is “It’s Good to be Queen”.

Hillaqry Rodham Clinton, nominee of the Democratic Party for President of the United States in the 2016 election election.. The Short Bio Born in Chicago and raised in the suburb of Park Ridge, Illinois, Clinton attended Wellesley College, graduating in 1969, and earned a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1973. After serving as a congressional legal counsel, she moved to Arkansas, marrying Bill Clinton in 1975. In 1977, she co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. She was appointed the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978, and, the following year, became the first woman partner at Rose Law Firm. As First Lady of Arkansas (1979–81, 1983–92), she led a task force whose recommendations helped reform Arkansas's public schools, and served on several corporate boards.
At the 1995 UN conference on women, held in Beijing, Clinton stated in a then controversial and influential speech, that "human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights". Her marriage endured the Lewinsky scandal of 1998, and her role as first lady drew apolarized response from the public. Clinton was elected in 2000 as the first female senator from New York, the only first lady ever to have sought elective office. Following the September 11 attacks, she voted to approve
As First Lady of the United States, Clinton led the unsuccessful effort to enact the Clinton health care plan of 1993. In 1997 and 1999, she helped create the State Children's Health Insurance Program. She also tackled the problems of adoption and family safety and foster care. the war in Afghanistan. She also voted for the Iraq Resolution, which she later regretted. She took a leading role in investigating the health issues faced by 9/11 first responders. She voted against the Bush tax cuts. She was re-elected to the Senate in 2006. Running for president in 2008, she won far more delegates than any previous female candidate, but lost the Democratic nomination to Illinois Senator Barack Obama. As Secretary of State in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2013, Clinton responded to the Arab Spring, during which she advocated the U.S. military intervention in Libya. She helped organize a diplomatic isolation and international sanctions regime against Iran, in an effort to force curtailment of that country's nuclear program; this would eventually lead to the multinational Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement in 2015. Leaving office after Obama's first term, she wrote her fifth book and undertook speaking engagements before announcing her second presidential run in the 2016 election. Clinton received the most votes and primary delegates in the 2016 Democratic primaries, formally accepting her party's nomination for President of the United States on July 28, 2016,
desired change. In summarizing her management style, through interviews, tapes and other research these are the most significant traits in her management style. 1. Strategic thinker in output: She considers the best for the most relevant reasons. Rather than go all in for a single win on a very specific group, she is able to look at the entire event, purpose or group and plan a longer strategic solution. Whether she decides to communicate that in great detail –it depends. But she thinks about the greatest best for the greatest number concerned. 2. Strategic thinker on Input: Hillary looks at the decisions and the decision makers. She actually knows who’s playing ball, their positions, their capacity to act, how to approach them and what they are likely to say before she picks up the phone. (Side note: I can almost bet when teachers and relatives looked in her eyes as a baby, they could tell-This one is a thinker). 3. She does gather consensus 4. She is a team player, back field as well as team captain. 5. She can navigate the back office. Who to call to get what done. 6. She does not give up. 7. Battle proven 8. Her need for change comes from a deep place. Not wanting any other 4 year old children or any disadvantage person to be overlooked or neglected. As her grandmother was as a child.

There never seems to be enough time. There are too many top priorities. There are too many meetings, many unnecessary and a complete waste of time. Are you making a dent in that to-do list? Why does it seem to get longer? Why aren’t you making headway?
Are you having trouble falling asleep? Are you waking up in the middle of the night? Both? Or are you not sleeping at all? Is your mind filled with monkey chatter? Or is it numbed out but still won’t shut down even when dead tired? Are you having headaches? A lousy love life? And feeling guilty about it? Depressed? Feeling fat? Underweight? Unattractive?
It’s time to reexamine the way you’re doing things because if you keep going down this road, your brain is going to suffer. In fact, it’s already suffering. Burnout is at hand but you’re not alone! And I have several solutions for you. Some of them you won’t expect.
Are you having difficulty making decisions? Are you confused and foggy-brained?
No One Truly Thrives Under Pressure
Did you answer, “Yes” to these questions?
The biggest lie about the productivity myth is that people love pressure. So they do the things which INCREASE pressure

forget why you’re doing what you doing. This is the formula for mass confusion. And it doesn’t just affect you at work. It affects you everywhere else in your life. Don’t you see a pattern?
instead of increasing efficiency and efficacy. These include writing to-do lists, hunkering down, and the worse of them all, multi-tasking, You’re bogged down in details that don’t matter. You’re bogged down in meetings you don’t need to attend. You’re at the mercy of someone else’s agenda. Your attention is divided in so many directions. It’s not a wonder that you can’t identify what’s important anymore. And in there you’ve lost sight of the original objective. You forget what it is. You Page 63 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Believe me, I’ve been there. The day I discovered the solutions to these things was the day I finally found the road to freedom – and clarity.
This is You on Stress There are millions of biochemical reactions going on inside you. Even as you sit here and read this article, millions of reactions have just finished, are starting, or are taking place right now. You don’t know they’re happening. Well, that’s not entirely true. There are certain things that happen and you definitely know it. It has to do with the mind-body connection. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
This mind-body connection is neither hard to explain nor to prove. And modern science has proven it too, but they don’t call it the mind-body connection! They call it the Stress Response. You have many physical reactions when you’re afraid, angry or upset. For example, what happens when you get scared? Your heart beats a lot faster. Your blood pressure rises. Your breathing gets quicker and more shallow. Your skin might flush or you go pale. But the reactions aren’t just physical. Your emotional state is also affected. It was triggered first. You’ve turned on the Sympathetic Nervous System. On the other hand, your body has fantastic recovery mechanisms to calm you down quickly. Normally this happens within minutes. As you calm down, everything relaxes. You’ve now tuned in on the Parasympathetic Nervous System. Both mechanisms - that of a strong emotion and that of calming down - have biochemical components behind them. These Page 64 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
biochemical responses are normal. What’s not normal is when the responses during stressful times begin to dominate. They harm you more than you may think, and they are a big factor in any chronic physical and mental issues you may be experiencing. Researchers have found that 50 percent of people who have suffered from heart attacks don’t have clogged arteries. So what is going on here? Studies have discovered that other factors may cause heart disease. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The Stress Response and You Let’s look at the brain for a minute. The two most important parts of the brain, when it comes to the stress response are the hypothalamus and the hippocampus. The hypothalamus is responsible for all the biochemical messengers of the entire body such as neurotransmitters like dopamine and some of the hormones such as oxytocin. The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your stomach to digest. They can also affect mood, sleep, concentration and your body, including your Notably, they have found evidence that anger is a factor in many of those who suffer from heart attacks. They are achingly and slowly validating what Chinese Medicine identified as key factors – the emotions - in all manner of disease, injury and pain. Worse yet they don’t know how to use the information except in very general terms when they tell you to keep your stress levels down without an actual guidance system to assist you with the things that are stressing you out now.
Page 65 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
weight. The hippocampus deals with memories, learning, and emotions. It‘s also where most new brain cells are created well into old age because hopefully, you’re still creating new memories. Make a note of this: The type and quality of the memory counts. Your body’s stress response kicks off as soon as you perceive a threat or danger, whether REAL or IMAGINED. The brain doesn’t know the difference. Neither does your body. Chronic stress depletes Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
or causes an imbalance in the level of neurotransmitters, which lead to the adverse effects of stress. Here’s what happens during a stressful bout. The hypothalamus automatically sends signals down your spinal cord to the adrenal glands, which sit on top of your kidneys, which will secrete the stress hormone, adrenaline. It also sends signals to your pituitary gland at the bottom of your brain and tells it to release factors to stimulate your adrenal cortex (in the adrenal glands I just talked about) to produce a stress hormone called cortisol. At the same time, the hypothalamus and the hippocampus are “monitoring” and communicating with each other. If the hippocampus is healthy, it’ll tell the hypothalamus to stop releasing cortisol when it reaches a certain level. But if you’re often unhappy or stressed out or numbed out, then too much stress hormones damage the hippocampus. So a damaged hippocampus can’t tell the hypothalamus to stop, so more stress hormones are released which causes a vicious cycle. Page 66 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
That’s why you might find that it takes you a long time to calm down! Here’s what you should be concerned about too much cortisol excites the neurons so much that they start firing off too often. This starts killing OFF neurons in the hippocampus, which you know governs memory and learning and where most of your new neurons are created. The result? Existing brain cells DIE off and new ones don’t get created. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
body and brain start craving stress hormones. That’s why you can get into so many vicious cycles that look familiar and you wonder why life doesn’t change. You have to make the conscious decision to change your life.
Stress Kills Brain Cells. Optimism Heals Them You CAN reverse the bad things that are happening inside your brain! It takes work. You’ve got to think, be and do differently in order to revitalize your brain (and your body since everything is unequivocally connected.) So, in order to become well again and stay well, the following medical trend is VERY important.
Optimism Overcomes Obstacles Your brain actually shrinks. It atrophies. Stress makes you stupid. Sure, everyone is different and everyone handles life in their own unique way, some more successfully than others. But if you’re not fired up every day doing what you’re doing, then you have lost something very important.
Control.
Here are the traits of emotionally strong (optimistic) people: Grateful Generous to themselves with others Hang out with upbeat people Ignore naysayers More successful Persevere Enjoy overall better health
When you’re in a chronic negative mental state, you’re reinforcing certain neural networks inside your brain. The cells in your
When you feel good you’re patching into certain hormones and neurotransmitters.
Page 67 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

You’ve got plenty of dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin. When you’ve got an abundance of each of one of these, you’ll feel very positive about your life. In order to take back control of your brain you have to choose to think differently and to feel differently. Remember it’s all about which nervous system you’re turning on. You have control over this. Dopamine flows when
You take a step towards a goal. You expect to be rewarded. Your efforts are rewarded. You achieve your goal.
Serotonin flows when you feel you are important, that you matter. That’s self-confidence. Not narcissism. Oxytocin flows from Human touch Thinking and feeling fondly about someone you love or care about (and that better include yourself!) When you’re optimistic:
You set goals. You feel motivated. You take action. You’re enthusiastic. You’re confident. You can think straight. You’re more resilient. You’re memory is great.
Page 68 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Let’s face it. Whenever you’ve achieved anything you believed you could. You were enthusiastic. You were optimistic. You ignored the doubts, from yourself and others. You just went and did it, even when it was hard.
How to Boost Productivity and Win Back Your Brain In order to improve you have to make a conscious decision that you’re going to change for the better. Here’s a number of actions I suggest you take to win back clarity of mind and ensure brain health. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
1. Decide that you’re going to control your own time. 2. Know why you work on anything. This is BIG because if you know why, then it will have meaning and you’ll feel compelled to do it. 3. Block Time. Block time is scheduling chunks of time in advance when you can have the time to do the work. There are no results unless you do the work. Guard that time jealously. Make it known that this is important. Encourage others to do the same. 4. Focus on one task at a time and finish it. Do as much as you can in your block time Page 69 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
to do the best to your ability. Get your team to do the same thing. 5. Slow Down to Speed Up. If you’re feeling unfocused and harried, please stop whatever it is you’re trying to do and force yourself to calm down and be quiet. This may only take a few minutes. Remember what I said about stress making you stupid? Start thinking straight again with a well deserved break. 6. Stop multi-tasking. Your brain can only focus on one task at a time. Multitasking is actually a reason for loss of focus and concentration. 7. Prioritize. Prioritize. Prioritize. Get it straight. Identify what’s really important. If priorities change, then what has to be dropped to address it. Here’s a quick resource for you about prioritizing: https://youtu.be/F6Mqh6TtIR4 8. Challenges and obstacles are bound to happen. You need to understand that they will always happen, BUT they’re just circumstances AND temporary. You are greater than any temporary circumstance. These are my recommendations for a saner life. You have control over what you do and nothing else, but you must make the decision that YOU are in control. In 2011 mobile shopping became synonymous with smartphone shopping. The percentage of mobile shoppers who were smartphone users jumped to 93%, from 75% in 2010. With 5 Billion mobile phone users out there, mobile ready sites and apps are quickly replacing conventional web sites. iPhones, iPads and Androids are replacing computers. Advances in technology have mobilized us and now we find ourselves living in a mobile world and taking advantage of mobile activities, including shopping and buying.
Page 74 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Google who is on top of all of the trends, has a division exclusively devoted to mobile preparedness., and it will soon become a Google negative if your site is NOT mobile compliant. What has happened however is people are confusing mobile compliancy, a developed mobile website and mobile apps, and this is resulting in people and businesses getting ripped off. So I’m going to go over the differences.
Most websites developed today will be using themes that are mobile compliant. That means it moves around your data so it can fit on the screen and make it mobile compliant. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Here are the 4 criteria for mobile readiness. 1. Speed – it must load fast 2. Size – the fonts and text must be geared towards fat fingers (don’t fan the screen to read it) 3. Ease of navigation – simple and easy to get information they want 4. Touch integration – to email, phone, and load directions and location As you may already be aware, the mobile marketplace is a GIGANTIC, and untapped marketplace. Google CEO Eric Schmidt said this in a recent interview: “This is the future and everyone will Page 75 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
adapt.” And Cisco says it’ll grow 10-fold over the next four years.LinkedIn made it a major initiative as they focused on their mobile app. Some of its key improvements are faster overall performance across all features and a simpler and more intuitive menu and interface. They’ve also listened to user feedback, putting the update stream front and center Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
when launching the app and providing users long-awaited access to groups.
Let me help illustrate the differences. If you have seen my site from your computer – www.TracyRepchuk.com you have seen a typical website as it’s designed to appear. If you access that SAME site from your phone, you will see that it is a full mobile website. That means it’s not just adjusting what is on the master site, it was written specifically for the phone. Page 76 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
To test whether your site is mobile compliant go here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ mobile-friendly
or you can see what your site looks like on all platforms here: http://ready.mobi/ So that leaves some with the burning question, then what is an app? People think a full mobile site is an app, and they are often sold one of these at app prices. An app is short for application and it’s a small specialized program that you download (different from the website), and it can provide features such as accumulate loyalty points, private access to videos, audios Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

I have had the liberty of sharing my thoughts, experiences and perceptions on mentoring with you for the past five issues. Providing you with a different perspective on the impact that mentoring can have on the lives of the two people engaged in what can be a dynamic relationship. Developing on my beliefs that mentoring principles and processes can extend beyond the boardroom and classroom, and into living and family rooms. A philosophy that each of us can be a mentor. That our experiences hold in them precious learning opportunities for others. Lessons with infinite impact and can extend beyond the sharing of knowledge, to sharing thoughts, feelings, dreams and fears. Sharing of our deepest selves and connecting to each other on a level that supersedes what we are consciously aware of. This philosophy was the foundation for the concept that women can mentor girls through the sharing of their experiences with each other that formed the foundation for my book The ATHENA Prodigies: Empowering Women Empowering Girls. Page 82 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
How do you measure your effectiveness as a mentor? What tangible elements or attributes provide evidence that you were an effective leader? Do you possess a knowingness whereby you feel that you extended yourself to the benefit of your mentee that surpasses any form of measureable result? As I wrote in my inaugural column, attributes such as goals or actions drive some form of result that creates data. Data whereby a Return on Investment (ROI) from the time mentors and mentees spent together could be measured. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
A desire to help another through mentoring provides the emotional precipice that can carry the dyad through turbulent times, when results are not meeting expectations and motivation is struggling. This desire though is not enough to carry the weight of the ROI placed upon the dyad by their workplace, academic institution or the individual members of the dyad.
Measuring effectiveness or the ROI might sound like am automated, cold or sterile process; opposite of what a mentoring relationship can be. Establishing ROI’s are needed to define and measure the value and output of the intentions behind the time and energy that a company, institution, caregiver, mentor and mentee commit to the process. If you have a desire to help others and aid in their success and development, would you not want proof that you obtained this goal? That the time you invested was effective? Page 83 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The continued growth and adaptation of communication methods ensures that the dyad sets-off and continues to travel down a path of success are critical to being able to measure interim results and effectiveness of the dyad. Making the most effective use of communication time when mentoring is critical to ensuring that action plans, follow-ups and accountability are assigned to support the continued forward propulsion of results and growth. My June column outlined a six-step processes on how to maximize the effectiveness of the time a dyad spends together. Measuring the effectiveness of the dyad is less cumbersome if the ROI’s are defined at the start of the relationship. Measurement can be completed using a number of physical tools, methods or analysis. Effectiveness can also be measured using what could be perceived as intangible elements Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
such as feelings. Either way, measuring the effectiveness of mentoring is completed by assessing the results of the dyad at a given moment in time, based on the change in knowledge, skill or behavior from a defined point in the past.
6 Methods for Measuring Mentoring Effectiveness Measuring the effectiveness of mentoring can encompass multiple learning elements. Defining how a mentoring relationship is to be measured to quantify overall effectiveness should focus on key elements that will provide the most value to the outcome of the relationship. These elements can be separated based on three distinct learning methods and their change over time measured using a variety of processes. Page 84 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Measuring what was learned – The Thinking Through effective communication, mentoring involves the transfer or attainment of new knowledge. This can be done bidirectionally as mentors and mentees learn from each other. Acquiring knowledge can span from remembering simple instructions to more complex such as formulating a hypothesis by making connections between gained knowledge. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Measuring what can now be done – The Doing Measuring the effectiveness of a skill encompasses the physical ability to perform a task. The proficiency of the actions can be measured against scales (e.g. ratings) and metrics (e.g. time) or the ability of a skill to eradicate undesirable results. Have the mentee perform the skill in action. Mentors, or other unbiased experts, can assess the proficiency of the new skill against developed standards (e.g. grade school student completing simple to complex addition questions, a Technician disassembling then reassembling a piece of equipment).
Effectiveness of new knowledge can be measured through: 1. Utilizing tests and assigning a grade. The change in the test mark can be a metric to assess effectiveness of the acquisition of required knowledge. 2. Simulations or events that put the mentee in a position whereby they have to share their knowledge with others (e.g. speaking on a topic at a seminar, leading a tutorial on the acquired knowledge) Page 85 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Mastery of a skill can be measured as the mentee performs tasks that increase in difficulty. Is the mentee imitating an action, performing the action or skill with increased proficiency and efficiency, adapting a pre-existing skill to a new problem or creating new patterns and processes for specific situations? Assess the change in frequency or increase of a tangible metric that supports the mentees ability to correlate and apply the right skill to a required application (e.g. # of errors, % of uptime, % change in sales, showing work and how answers were achieved on a test). Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Measuring behavioral changes – The Feeling What mentee behaviors changed that without them, would have impeded their growth and results? Initiative, drive, action-oriented, desire for results, seeking out feedback, seeking out new opportunities to practice learned knowledge or skills, behaving as a mentor to others? Does the mentee respond versus react to new situations? Measuring behavioral or emotional changes can be challenging as they are heavily associated and biased by ones’ own perception. However, it is possible to measure the effectiveness of behavioral or emotional changes through the use of before and after assessments. A.) Ask for feedback from people that interact with the mentee. Feedback provided from a deep cross- section of individuals that the mentee interacts with or impacts, such as peers, people leaders or direct reports, will provide a rich source of data. Behaviors that lead to success and results, such as initiative, action-oriented Page 86 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
or collaboration, will be noticed by others and are examples of behaviors that can grow or be modified through a supportive mentoring relationship. Feedback could be provided using a survey. Assessment of before and after results will identify areas of growth and enrichment (e.g. on a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the mentees capabilities to take initiative? Their leadership presence?) B) Have the mentee complete a before and after survey. Feelings can be measured based on their own perceptions of expertise or growth in a topic or skill (e.g. Have mentees rank their feelings Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
B.) associated with their perception or comfort level using a scale with emotion data points such as not confident/somewhat confident/very confident or novice/ intermediate/expert). The outcome is a desire for the mentee to be able to self-assess their own growth. The self-assessment results can also be compared against survey results provided by others. This additional measurement tool is effective at identifying the degree of the mentees self-awareness.
The Impact of Measuring Effectiveness When results, growth and personal or professional development are the drivers that Page 87 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
brought a dyad together, the attainment of these attributes can only be validated if they are measured. Knowing how effective a dyad was at achieving their goals, or providing a positive ROI, can provide infinite value and learning opportunities. Value and learning opportunities can include: Positive ROI (e.g. increased sales, decreased waste, improved grades, positive morale or behaviors, enhanced collaboration) can result in a workplace continuing its use of mentoring programs or investing resources into expanding its use. Development of bestpractices that can be shared across departments, grades, family services or companies within an organization. Discovery of motivational tools to engage employees, students or children to drive and reward desired knowledge, skill and behaviors. Most of the focus on measuring effectiveness of a dyad is on the results of the mentee. However, the growth and development of a mentor is just as important to measure as it can have an impact on their desire to continue to provide such a valuable service. When the time to end a mentoring relationship has come, reflection by mentors on their experience provides valuable learning lessons as to how effective they were able to relate their experiences to their mentee. Mentors can ask themselves the same questions postulated when they made the decision to be a mentor: Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
How do you measure your effectiveness as a mentor? What tangible elements or attributes provide evidence that you were an effective leader? Do you possess a knowingness whereby you feel that you extended yourself to the benefit of your mentee that surpasses any form of measureable result? If you have a desire to continue being a mentor, each mentoring experience provides you with new skills and tools to grow your ability to serve your mentees needs as effectively as possible. It is through your desire to help others and the sharing of your own experiences that you have the greatest impact. Measuring effectiveness of how your experiences shaped the development of another may be difficult as impact may extend beyond your mentee. Your positive role-modeling and nurturing may result in your mentee being inspired to share their experiences with others by becoming a mentor themselves.

Deep-seated hatreds, prejudices and inequities as to AfricanAmericans have divided the America since the days of slavery. The United States has never accepted responsibility and atoned for the vestiges of slavery, with prejudice and the disparate treatment of African Americans continuing to this very day despite civil rights legislation dating back to 1964. For this reason, the United States remains plagued by racial problems. Almost every day appears another sad news story about an unarmed black man being unjustly shot or, after the fact, the utter unaccountability in the judicial system, giving rise to an unbridled rage now indiscriminately directed at police officers who are being murdered. Historical monuments and symbols from the Civil War, which only commemorate “white history” are being desecrated, while similar monuments and symbols as to the suffering endured by AfricanAmericans are sorely lacking. Our nation’s leaders - political, religious, educational and civic – at the local, state Page 92 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
and federal level must come together to heal a nation that is fractured and hurting. The means is through the creation of truth commissions.
What Is a Truth Commission? A truth commission is a bilateral process between individuals, communities and nations. Truth commissions are founded upon mutual goodwill allowing for open dialogue about past Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
ancestors. In many cases, reparations are made.
injustices and inequities. A truth commission works toward the releasing of historical hatreds and prejudices so that the process of healing may commence. When a truth commission is convened painful stories are shared by both the aggrieved and the offended, even if such grievances are historical in nature. In all cases, a sincere apology is offered, whether it be for one’s own offenses or the offenses committed by one’s Page 93 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
“Cradle to Prison Pipeline” The shootings of unarmed black men followed by a lack of accountability or redress in the legal system has become an endemic despite efforts by the United States Department of Justice to make some sense out of the senseless. The numbers are bleak: Police killed 102 unarmed black people in 2015, nearly twice each week; Nearly 1 in 3 black persons killed by police in 2015 was unarmed; although the actual number may be higher due to underreporting; 37% of unarmed people killed by police were black in 2015 despite black people representing only 13% of the population: Unarmed black people were killed at 5x the rate of unarmed whites in 2015; Only 10 of the 102 cases in 2015 where an unarmed black person was killed by police resulted in officer(s) being charged with a crime, and only 2 of these deaths resulted in the conviction of the officers involved; The number of blacks killed has included an increase in the number of black female fatalities: and In the first half of 2016, blacks continued to be shot at 2.5 times the rate of whites with less than 10 percent having been unarmed and one-quarter having been previously diagnosed as mentally ill. "Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror of lynchings in the past. Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency," stated Mireille Fanon MendesFrance, Chair the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. The U.N. working group found that in 2014 37 percent of the state and federal prison populations were made up of black males. It suggested that the U.S. implement reforms, including reducing the use of mandatory minimum laws, ending racial profiling and excessive bail, and banning solitary confinement.
poverty creates a lack of hope among young black teenagers who have no expectation of living to maturity. As such, a black male has a one in three probability of being incarcerated. One out of nine black males will be imprisoned between the ages of 20 and 34.
There are other salient statistics. One in five American children live in poverty today, placing the U.S. as having the second highest child poverty rate among developed nations. Among black children the poverty rate approximates 40 percent. Ultimately,
“This is America's pipeline to prison — a trajectory that leads to marginalized lives, imprisonment and often premature death. Although the majority of fourth graders cannot read at grade level, states spend about three times as much money per prisoner as per public school pupil,” according to the

phrase “America’s cradle to prison pipeline”.
Lynchings and Other Vestiges of Slavery Lynchings occurred as recently as 1950. Between 1877 and 1950, in 12 southern states, there were 3,969 lynchings, 700 more than research previously indicated, according to civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, who authored a 2015 report, "Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror” for the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI).
The twelve states - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia – have brushed this history under the rug while displaying monikers representative of white supremacy, practices that continue to this day. Children’s Defense Fund.“Arguably the most important parallel between mass incarceration and Jim Crow is that both have served to define the meaning and significance of race in America. Indeed, a primary function of any racial caste system is to define the meaning of race in its time. Slavery defined what it meant to be black (a slave), and Jim Crow defined what it meant to be black (a secondclass citizen). Today mass incarceration defines the meaning of blackness in America: black people, especially black men, are criminals. That is what it means to be black,” penned Michelle Alexander, who coined the Page 95 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The ancestors of many victims, fearing for their own lives, fled to the north. For instance after a 1912 lynching in Forsyth County, Georgia, white vigilantes distributed leaflets demanding that all black people leave the county or suffer deadly consequences. By 1920 the county’s black population had plummeted from 1100 to just thirty. This is a form of ethnic cleansing and it was a crime against humanity. According to the EJI report, “The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s challenged the legality of many of the Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The Necessity for a Truth Commission Unifying America “It’s difficult to deal emotionally with the history of slavery in America, which is why many whites have chosen not to. Yet it’s imperative that we do, because until we see clearly the line of development leading from slavery to the Civil War to the Ku Klux Klan to the civil rights movement to “benign neglect” to the “prisonindustrial complex,” America will continue to misunderstand the real problem. This is not just about how many bullets were shot into Michael Brown. The shots that matter most here are way, way too many to count,” stated spiritualist Marianne Williamson. The means to deal with this sordid history is through the creation of a truth commissions at the local, state and federal levels to address slavery and ongoing racial injustices and inequities. Both sides have be willing to come to Page 96 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
the table with goodwill and with the hope that they can build a better and more peaceful future for generations to come. While there have been a few truth commissions emanating from self-organizing community-based grassroots groups, the entire nation must be part of the process. Examples of local efforts include the Greensboro, North Carolina Truth and Reconciliation Commission which exposed the truth of a 1979 massacre of anti-racism activists by the Ku Klux Klan, in which the local police were complicit. It collected testimonies from survivors, Klan members and the police. It culminated in official apologies, public monuments, museum exhibits, a community justice center, a police review board, and anti-racism training for police. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
There was also the Mississippi Truth Project, involving the racial misconduct of public officials between 1945 and 1975. It created a safe place where a racially divided community could come together to engage in truth-telling and collective remedial action.
Due to the complexity of the issues presented and widespread differences between communities, regions, and states, this must occur at many levels supported by not only the state and the federal governments, but also by religious, educational and civic leaders.
It is now time for America to collectively engage in a truth commission. “This process of reconciliation is messy and challenging. But it is also a source of hope. Through deep dialogue, truth-telling and taking action to make things as right as possible, we can forge new futures based on the mutual recognition of one another’s humanity. In this way, we can finally leave our past behind us… To move toward a reconciled America, we have to do the work ourselves,” stated advocate Fania Davis.
Examples of Truth Commissions
Page 97 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
While this seems to be a monumental undertaking, there have been two successful truth commissions at the national level; one in Germany and the other in South Africa. They are models for the United States to look to for guidance. In South Africa truth commissions as the harm done by Apartheid were created by peacekeeper and statesman, the late Nelson Mandela. In 1994, after Mr. Mandela was elected President of South Africa, he Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
convened a Truth and Reconciliation Commission understanding that the greatest healing would come from three considerations: first, that uncovering the truth about atrocities and injuries that occurred during apartheid was a central component of healing; second, that truth would not be able to be found without the co-operation of the perpetrators; and third and lastly, that the hatred and retribution had to begin to end with one side or the other.
Commission create peace. However, they do create conditions which make reconciliation and peaceful coexistence possible... The TRC has made it possible for the citizens of this country to begin to understand why people participated in such grotesque actions, and it has made clear what must be done to prevent such things from happening again... This was accomplished [by the TRC choosing] to work with a restitutive, rather than a retributive concept of justice."
South African author Colleen Scott reflected on the post-Apartheid era, "Reconciliation after war and a hideously grotesque pattern of gross violations of human rights is a matter of creating peace in the present, and of sustaining peace in the future... In and of itself, no Truth Commission can create reconciliation. Much less can a Truth
In Germany truth commissions have successfully redressed the wrongs committed during Hitler’s Nazi reign. After World War II, Germany fell into a period scholar Lily Gardner Feldman refers to as the “big silence”; their country had been divided and what remained was morally and physically shattered.
Page 98 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

“The country was beyond bankrupt as the gruesome details of the Nazis' systematic murder of 11 million Jews, Poles, Russians, Roma, homosexuals, and others were exposed,” stated Ms. Feldman. Amidst the rubble, some chose to try burying the sordid past while others started a grassroots movement that evolved into a national initiative. Germany proactively rehabilitated its postwar international reputation by reconciling with Nazi victims and acknowledging the atrocities Germany had committed. As German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently stated, “"We Germans will never forget the hand of reconciliation that was extended to us after all the suffering that our country had brought to Europe and the world." To this day, Germany is still paying an estimated $1.1 billion dollars annually in reparation for the damages it caused.
Conclusion The UN report concluded that “…the United States should consider reparations to African-American descendants of slavery, establish a national human rights commission and publicly acknowledge that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was a crime against humanity.” reparations. Reparations can extend beyond monetary Page 99 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
payments made to individuals to programs tailored to reduce the “cradle to prison pipeline”, and to the erection of monuments commemorating the black experience from the slavery to the present day. For instance, Head Start, an early intervention program created by United States Department of Health and Human Services provides comprehensive center-based early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families designed to foster stable family relationships, enhance children's physical and emotional well-being, and establish an environment conducive to the development of stronger cognitive skills. Head Start only reaches a fraction of impoverished families and extends only to families with children ages three through five. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The program begins too late and ends too soon. In addition, the program fails to provide essential wraparound services to the families, such a home visits by social workers and food for the entire family. Programs like Head Start must be reconceptualized and new programs developed to end inequities and to eradicate the “cradle to jail pipeline”. Such a program has already been developed in the area of counter-terrorism, where the United States has spearheaded the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) initiative intended to foster environments derailing radicalization. CVE is premised on widespread community involvement, especially that of religious leaders, supported by governments around the world. In the African-American community, its religious leaders, who are highly respected by their congregations, can play an integral role in educating their own congregations as well as starting safe and constructive dialogues with white congregations and interfaith groups. History books need to be rewritten to tell one history. This has occurred in Europe, where the history books in countries, such as France and Germany, taught differing national accounts of World War II. This is being remediated by a European Council Page 100 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
initiative, the European Association of History Educators, referred to as Euro Clio, whose mission statement, in part, reads: “…EUROCLIO has worked in many European countries and beyond on a large variety of issues related to the learning and teaching of history. A special focus has been on countries in political transformation and in particular those with inter-ethnic and inter-religious tensions such as Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. It also worked in regions that have experienced recent violent conflicts such as Former Yugoslavia, Cyprus, Lebanon and the Caucasus. The work has brought together hundreds of historians and history Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Smithsonian Institution prepares to open the National Museum of African-American History and Culture on September 24, 2016. Its website states that “The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be a place where all Americans can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience, what it means to their lives and how it helped us shape this nation. A place that transcends the boundaries of race and culture that divide us, and becomes a lens into a story that unites us all.”
educators to share experiences, to implement innovative learning about the past, discussing also sensitive and controversial issues and therefore creating new and inclusive historical narratives.” There also needs to be education in our schools to derail traditional hatreds and prejudices. As Nelson Mandela wrote, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” One effort at education, unification and healing is already underway as the Page 101 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The UN report suggested that monuments, markers and memorials be erected to facilitate dialogue, and that "…past injustices and crimes against African-Americans need to be addressed with reparatory justice." Not only must this occur but the call for the removal of or, worse, the desecration of civil war monuments and artifacts, such as the Confederate flag, must come to an end as they are as much as a part of U.S. history, as that which is lacking, no matter how disturbing. Former KKK member and white nationalist David Duke just announced that he is running for the United States Congress. Mr. Duke stated, “Thousands of special-interest groups stand up for African Americans, Mexican Americans, Jewish Americans, et cetera, et cetera. The fact is that European Americans need at least one man in the United States Senate — one man in the Congress — who will defend their rights and heritage.” Mr. Duke would continue to fuel racial tensions rather than heal his home state of Louisiana, let aid the United States in healing. He is the antithesis of goodwill. While this paper addressed the AfricanAmerican experience, truth commissions can also be convened as to other marginalized groups: Native American, Muslim and migrant populations. If vitamins are what you want, you must eat real food. Avoid junk. People call it junk food, but it’s not food, it’s just junk. Dejunk your diet.
Most of us learn about nutrition from marketing materials – commercials, package markings, and testimonials from professional athletes. Marketing has just one goal, and that is to make money. The claims on the foodstuff packages are mostly misleading. When you see a box of sugar cereal that says “vitamin fortified,” you are led to believe this is a healthier option than other sugar cereals. However, the difference in the amounts of vitamins is minimal.
They are all processed foodstuffs that do not resemble anything that the mother nature grows. Page 107 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Food is a lifestyle choice you make throughout the day, everyday of your life. I really had no idea what a game changer it was until I nearly died. Chemotherapy damaged my digestive system severely, and I could not eat much of anything for a long time. I had to find ways to obtain the most amount of nutrition in the smallest amount of food possible. I had to learn to dejunk my diet. Every cell in your body is made up of the food that you eat. Food changes the way you feel, think, and move. Out of all things that affect your balance and health, what
you put in your body is one thing that is COMPLETELY in your control. No one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to eat that donut. Your choice is entirely voluntary. You select the building blocks for your body – quality material will build a quality vehicle to live your wonderful life. And when your body is done, you are done. Dejunk your diet, and your life will improve drastically in every aspect. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Food does matter. It affects your thoughts, emotions, actions, and judgment for better life-work balance.
You may still think that you’re okay with your current food choices because it hasn’t killed you yet, because a healthy diet doesn’t taste good, because you think you’re unbreakable, because there are more important things that concern you, or because food isn’t associated with how you live your life.
Nothing could be further from the truth! Physical and mental illnesses, absenteeism at work, road rages, mass shootings in public places, and children born with special needs… these behavioral problems and physical challenges start with what goes inside their bodies. Too many toxins and too few nutrients in our food is one of the major reasons. The quality of the building material changes everything! Your emotional and physical challenges can all improve greatly with a clean diet. Page 108 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Find joy in the real food that you eat. Happiness is a big part of food, after all. If food can’t make you happy, all is lost. However, food is the fuel and nutrition for your survival. THAT is the long-term happiness you deserve from food. A healthy diet is absolutely scrumptious! Honor your bioindividuality and eat what does YOUR body good. Avocado is packed with good fats and nutrients, but if you are allergic to it, you obviously should not eat it. Vegan, Paleo, high-protein, vegetarian, raw, Mediterranean, and so many other diets all have evidencebased facts as to why they are good diets. However, they do not all work the same for everybody. Only you know how you feel in your body, so be aware of your body’s responses and energy level.
My Diet Dejunk guidelines generally start with what to add to your current diet, not what to eliminate. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The goal is to crowd out the bad stuff with the good nutrients. A long list of don’t-eat-this and don’t-eat-that does not help the wellbeing mentality. If anything, it causes rebellion and repulsion. Don’t give up before you start. Think positively. Health and balance is coming your way. Be open to making alterations to your current Standard American diet (the SAD). Start with the following:
A. Drink fluoride-free filtered water The common guideline is to drink eight cups a day, but this is the very minimum. The appropriate amount of water depends on your body weight and the activity level. Every mental and physical challenge (headache, burnout, metabolism, aches, frustration, anxiety, etc.) becomes worse when
Page 109 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

you are dehydrated. Drink clean water to restore your body’s proper functions. If you prefer to have flavor in your water, add freshly squeezed lemon juice (organic, of course). It is extremely healing and detoxifying. Decaffeinated herbal teas are okay. All other forms of liquid (coffee, alcohol, sodas, energy drinks, fruit juices, “vitamin” beverages, etc.) are not recommended. Avoid plastic bottled water if at all possible. Add plenty of clean water to your diet, and you will end up crowding out these undesirable liquids. Make sure that your water does not contain fluoride. Contrary to the popular belief, fluoride is a carcinogen and neurotoxin.
Fluoride does NOT fight tooth decay (so switch to fluoride-free toothpaste), Page 110 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
and it certainly does not have a place in our water. Fluoride level in American tap water is around 2 to 5 parts per million (ppm). Be sure to get a water filter that removes all the fluoride in your water.
B. Add organic whole foods to your diet Whole food means the unprocessed form that nature intended (example: eat an apple, not an apple pie). Eat it the way it grew on a plant. Don’t eat what was manufactured in a plant. Make colorful vegetables your main portion of each meal. Raw vegetables preserve the enzymes but all the fiber can be difficult to digest. Lightly steaming (not microwaving!) is the best way to cook vegetables. Eat fruits sparingly. Crowd out the junk by filling your plate with the real food that nourishes you.
C. Choose organic lean meats that are humanely raised and grass fed This means the animals lived happy lives on their native diet and died humane deaths. Many in the American food supply do not, and they have large amounts of stress hormones in their tissues (search for “factory farming” online for more information). Choose organic, pasture raised meats Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
and eggs that are free of growth hormones and antibiotics. Animal protein should not be the main course of your meal. Eat it sparingly. If available in your area, I recommend organic bison for your red meat. It is very tender and lean.
D. Avoid sugar I know this has been said before, but understand the importance of this repetition. Sweets are not the happy foods that you think they are. Don’t expect yourself to last long when you constantly load your body with sugar. Sugar is inflammatory. It suppresses the immune system, causes weight gain, raises the blood sugar level, stresses the liver, and gives you that awful mid-afternoon crash. It is in all processed foodstuffs in the American food supply. We live in a
culture addicted to sugar. For good reasons, too. Sugar plays many different roles, starting from the earliest years of your life. Sugar is celebration of happy occasions, award for finishing your vegetables, entertainment when you’re bored, a friend when you’re lonely, and consolation when the Page 111 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
love of your life ditches you. You collect many happy and comforting memories of sugar. And yet nothing, I mean NOTHING, prompts more guilt and shame than sugar. You may have already attempted to reduce sugar in your diet. You wonder why it’s so hard to stay away from sugar.
Is it a character flaw? Lack of will power? You’re just not good enough to quit sugar, lose weight, and be

and happy? Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine. Yes, really. Eight times! Sugar is the most powerful substance you will ever put in your body… unless you’ve had chemotherapy like I did. Yet, sugar is everywhere and its use is completely unregulated. This is why you, an intelligent rational thinker, reach out for sugar even when fully aware that sugar is not healthy. An average American eats 150+ pounds of sugar every year. We must stop this madness. Lose the sugar addiction, and everything in your life will change for the better exponentially.

The One Phrase Every Entrepreneur Should Adopt:

If we could choose one song to permeate the backdrop of our collective lives, it would probably be “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. As a family, we count our collective blessings and remind ourselves that life has been good; in fact, it has been grand. We would like to believe that as soon as our feet hit the ground each morning, the music would cue in with Ms. Simone’s lyrics, “Yeah, it's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me, ooooooooh...and I'm feelin' good.” Does this mean that we have not received our portion of obstacles? No, it means that through each tunnel, we have recognized the light at the end. Before tackling challenges, we have anchored ourselves in strategy and a positive mindset. We stick close to a phrase that literally ran through the veins of our household growing up, “be confident, borderline cocky.” Carl, also known as dad to the twins and husband to Sonya, constantly reminded us to rely on this frame of thinking before embarking upon new territory. He encouraged us to remember what we are made of, that we are “worth our salt” as they say. He told us that if we believed in ourselves, others certainly would as well. Before we decided to harness our collective superpowers and create a familypreneur team, we were each already living passionately and quite successfully in our respective Page 121 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
fields. Each of us have tendencies of a serial hustler; always having worked as freelancers and independent business owners, often times alongside traditional 9-5 jobs. Living life on purpose and for a purpose is all we really understand as women, as professionals and as business owners. Giving birth to Team Transformation was really the only thing that made sense for our future. “My parents were entrepreneurs and so were their parents. My husband and I have been blessed to build several successful businesses over the years as well. So naturally, it never escaped us to encourage our daughters to do the same. We just never realized we would be able to form such a powerful motherdaughter team. We are living life as family-preneurs and it feels good.” Sonya While showing home business owners how to establish their virtual presence, we always recycle that applicable phrase; teaching them to be confident, borderline cocky. While we think this phrase is essential for all entrepreneurs to embrace, it’s most critical that the home business owner understand how to apply it. The U.S. Small Business Administration tells us that more than half of all U.S. business owners are home based. Most of them have attempted to use online platforms to

skillset. Team Transformation provides the tools, teaches skill, and then, we sit back and watch people have what Oprah calls an aha! Moment. This is critical to building confidence.
Step 2: Commit yourself to Professional Development The commitment to continual development is something that all entrepreneurs have to embrace. Learning is recursive, so it’s vital that you not only have an educational foundation, but the opportunity to build on what is learned. Once you learn how to do things like build your social presence, establish a brand or attract customers, you want to keep the momentum going. Each week, Team Transformation taps into resources that keep us knowledgeable and confident - our friends and followers are always invited to join us. Here’s a video of what we do each week! After plugging in with us, you get an opportunity to hone your craft and engage with experts nearly every day of the week. We dare you to try capping your confidence at that point! In fact, we believe you’ll be approaching that confident, borderline cocky mentality that you need to really make it.
Step 3: Feed Your Body & Soul The business owner with a growth mindset is the one who finds success. Before you can expand a business, grow your reach or increase sales, you must tune your minds to the right frequency. In steps 1 and 2, a commitment is made to developing cognition and reinforcing knowledge.
Page 123 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Step 3 is reserved for feeding your body and soul. Here are a few things that we do to take care of ourselves and perform at our optimum. Daily prayer and meditation. Time
dedicated to giving thanks, asking for guiding wisdom and then allowing space to listen for a response is critical for business owners like Team Transformation. With so many people, voices and personalities coming into our lives each day, we rely on communion with God to give us discernment and to help us stay in alignment. We are ambitious women who feel we were designed to live abundant, happy and successful lives; so we ask daily for what we want.
Exercise. When we fuel our bod-
ies with hardcore cardio, early morning bike rides, or evening yoga at home, we feel amazing. Of course, health and wellness is an area of our lives that’s in the mode of continuous improvement. None of us are gym rats (trust us, we’ve tried), but we do believe in feeling good on the inside and looking good on the out! Exercise in any form not only keeps us in the right dress size, but reinforces positive and healthy lifestyle. We’ve literally spent whole nights laughing, shooting videos, pitching concepts, building the best familypreneur team possible. We’ve got to have energy in order to keep doing what we love.

Community Engagement and Service. Whether it be the physical or virtual community, making an investment in others is important. Engaging with people and offering support is paramount to our team’s health. We have each built a reputation as community change agents who are eager to connect and willing to help. In real time it looks like everything from stocking a local food pantry to jumping on a live platform to offer a word of encouragement or free business tips to our friends and subscribers. Reciprocity is also a crucial part of community engagement - we call this “the give back.” When people support our efforts and show love for our content, we give it back. Of course it’s impossible to reciprocate love to every single follower and fan, but each week, we pick a group of people to support, edify and encourage online.
While we’ve only listed 3 of the things that feed our body and soul, they truly keep us feeling phenomenal - honestly, we feel unstoppable. This is what helps us move from confident to borderline cocky. Step 3 provides the spiritual and physical focus needed to apply the knowledge built in steps 1 and 2. We encourage you to get out here with us and attack life with all that you have.

The modern era of collecting, compiling, analyzing, and producing raises questions in every part of our lives affected by numerical values. In sports it is referred to as analytics: the use of statistical values to make decisions. Instead of face to face meetings, the current trend is to cancel out the middle man by making the decision based solely on the production numbers of the athlete. This system analyzes not only the overall statistics but the circumstance of the statistic. Who, what, when, where, and how are the focus points. For example, if Player 1 and Player 2 produce identical statistical results at the end of a given game, the superior player is the one who is most efficient by using less chances. Which makes sense in the given context but the issue older ballplayers are having is how to quantify presence. In the world of evenly-matched sports teams it seems unfair to simply cast a player off due to a lack of efficiency, especially if the player is a proven winner. Page 130 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Seasons ago, The NFL raved about a young quarterback with a relatively high efficiency rating for a player with his experience. The pundits suggested if he played a whole season the results would be fantastic. Using analytics to gauge his ability in the NFL from just a few starts as a professional, along with his collegiate career created an unfillable void. The expectation built a huge amount of pressure around a young player who was robbed of a proper chance to prove his ability and is currently no longer playing. Thus the concern with overusing stats as a primary tool in acquiring and coaching players is at an all-time high. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
for print but great for people that do not have access to print in a timely manner. The web allows that same person to stay as informed as anybody in any city around the world. In sports, the new fascination with statistical analysts to make decisions does not account for abnormalities, or the “hot hand” in a given situation. The winning spirit of an athlete does not come into play as it is hard to quantify courage and resolve. Mathematically, sports typically do not have enough statistical data to constitute making a valid decision on how a player will perform on a given night. Statistics would never account for a player such as LeBron James to not shoot a shot in the final five minutes of a playoff game; or Steph Curry to be 1 for 5 from three as the best shooter in the history of
This is largely due the access everyone has in counting and compiling information.
basketball.
There are records and statistics of what we do every day—from phone calls, to steps taken at any given period throughout the day. The conglomerates that provide products push this sense of reliance on gadgets to manage our daily activities. For the most part it has greatly improved the way we communicate. Families are able to stay in touch with less effort, emergency situations are managed better, and information is now fingertip accessible. It’s not good news
Other factors come into play because no player stays at a consistent medium long enough to create the data needed to predict the outcome. If it were such a guarantee no one with a computer would lose a bet. The point spread system would be infallible and everyone would come up with the same result. “Nothing is fair in love and war,” meaning there is no way to guarantee victory without a complete mismatch, and even then miracles will occur. This highlights the importance of
Page 131 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

coaching, discretion, and interpretation. Analytics takes the power out of the hands of experts, subsidizing years of labor and learning to save money. Money, the driving force behind the Analytics Movement, is creating a prison of efficiency in an industry built on unforgettable moments. The unpredictability of sports is the reason we watch. No one wants to know every move or point scored in a game, as it completely defeats the purpose of watching or participating in the competition. Professional sports should be intense and unforgiving. On any given Sunday either team can win, even if one is a severe underdog we watch for the miracle. Analytics is getting a bad rap in the sports world. Although the possibility of using that type of statistical deduction to make macro-decisions might be a great benefit to society, the key difference in these two situations is the amount of data available. In sports the biggest teams are American Football teams, with about 53 players on a roster. There are about 32 teams that each play 16 games inside of a 17-week season. By comparison, a small city has a few hundred thousand people creating statistical norms which have a greater success rate in populating a functioning mathematical expression. The problem Page 132 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
with sports is that there’s just not enough data. For generations politicians have been “protecting” our freedoms by doing all of the hard thinking because the public is not properly informed. Policy details remain the business of wealthy landowners, moguls, and conglomerates. Outside of local town hall meetings, or working on a particular incentive, the public has little impact on most critical policy changes. We vote on whether or not a person is elected. Maybe we will decide if a park or library gets built. Whether or not a dangerous drug will be legal, or if we will participate in a war has nothing to do with us, the public. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The surviving reason for this wrinkle in the American political fabric is logistics. The political leaders of past constitutions figured the population as a whole was basically illiterate, so involving them in complicated issues was to no benefit of the nation. Systems of exclusion were instituted to control the final decisions politicians made, with the blessing of the wealthy. The general public’s vote has always been counted toward the success of one elected official over another but rarely to affect policies directly. In a nation of the people, for the people, the people can only choose people. We must then trust this person to do whatever it is they say they can to get Page 133 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
more votes. This same person, once inducted into the flow of politics, must now meet with wealthy people to discuss the “important” issues of society. Since wealthy business owners, whose main objective is to protect their investments, didn’t need the benefits of social reform, public education, and health care, they rarely showed any concern in dealing with the job of governing the public’s interest into a functioning society. This exclusion led to generations of classist racists who used land ownership, race, sex, and education to divide the people. Politicians then convinced the public that the political process was too complicated to be completely in the hands of the people so they allowed them to pick a representative to speak on behalf of their best interests. Voting became a dog and pony show, a competition between vague ideas that were supposed to be configured into viable policies to benefit public interest. Politicians are chosen to be the peoples’ representatives because the task of informing them about policy details and collecting/ counting votes would corrupt the political process. Although the process was sold as a way to get a political process rolling by working effectively with local leaders to keep the populace informed, this is exclusion of the highest order. Not only are certain demographics denied from voting, they will take the votes received Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
to pick a politician that has the people’s interests at heart. A hundred years ago this might not be such a hard sell. White landowners were the only people allowed to vote, excluding women. A system to born to deny rather than liberate is not designed to be efficient but rather survives on inefficiency. The evergrowing bureaucracy wrapped in mountains of meaningless paper occupies a large percentage of the government’s operational capacity, creating a funnel of opportunity in the interests of generational wealth. Due to the overwhelming volume of public interests, it is only natural that the political powers that be only have quality communication with the wealthy. Contact creates the forum that allows someone to be an influence on a politician. Wealthy lobbyists donate more money to “political issues” than they pay in taxes to a particular candidate or party. It is the wealthy who offer up their homes and dining halls to host political events with 10k plates to get a seat at a table with a valuable politician. Page 134 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Fast forward to 2016, an era when everyone has a super-computer in their pocket that counts, calculates, and relates billions of data bits daily. Our phones and tablets are more powerful than all computers built before the 2000’s combined. Furthermore, our phones have access to a cloud drive and a cloud computing system which places the power of mega-servers at the user’s fingertips. We record and analyze everything we do. So in this modern era of digital quantification why can we not count individual votes for a political election? The public is now informed beyond comprehension with the 24-hour news cycle Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
mail, why can we not use these same systems to participate in government?
and free access to the internet. The amount of digital information fed into our lives is astonishing and growing in volume daily. We have now developed vast networks of social media and self-help applications to manage our daily activities. Our phone is usually the first and last thing we pick up, touch, or read. So why doesn’t society use this new connectivity to make lives better as a whole instead of individual progress? If our current systems are safe enough to complete banking transactions, school assignments, and personal Page 135 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Today’s politics increasingly uses race, social economic status, and stereotypes to sway opinion. Politicians market themselves to demographics or groups rather than citizens. Individual citizens have to choose a group that appeals to their way of living rather than the changes they believe will promote progress. Corporations, unions, church organizations, and manufacturers manipulate facts to gain support from people they “represent.” Modern politics blends personal prejudices and social dynamics to promote feeling instead of reasoning. People feel a certain way about certain political situations but have no opinion or reason to define their feeling. Facts rarely come into play when politics are involved. It is the only remaining part of our society that relies on pure opinion to constitute real world facts. We have become the future society promised by science fiction writers, but the problem is that recreational computing is more advanced than our entire political process. One day the entire governing body will be reduced to management algorithms which will take into account individual perceptions, Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

statistical norms, and abnormalities. Governments around the world will have to account for these types of possibilities in the near future, as the power of nations returns to the hands of the people. In a future of reduce, reuse, recycle, renew, self-sustain and creation, what could a governing body provide for the people? If water, food, and energy can be accessed through the private sector - which is becoming increasingly populated by smaller businesses - our greatest function as a government would be the operations of war as the issues of our country fade into obscurity. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to actually vote, as a people, on the issues of war and public policy? The only things holding us back from a liquid smooth political process are the hordes of zombie politicians that terrorize the political countryside. Jobs in politics are very rewarding in the modern system of satisfying lobbyists and bigwig Page 137 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
donors. These people are using the inadequacy of the system to keep their jobs which have a low turnover rate and are usually protected by a set block of time before they can be challenged or audited. “One hand washes the other,” is a famous quote alluding to the notion of protecting your own to protect yourself. Concepts like these are good for private enterprise but are a severe injustice in the world of public service. If the data doesn’t exist, or isn’t being quantified how can we make proper decisions based on facts and not opinion? Introducing analytics into politics using the public’s data would dissolve political bias. Direct voting would revolutionize the political landscape. Calculating public opinion would be as simple as the touch of a button from a coffee shop. People have a valid opinion but feel it doesn’t matter because they are either red or blue. Analytics would give the power to the people and promote a politically active society. Why should we leave it up to a stranger, a “politician,” to figure out what we need or want as a society? Tua Rita is a winery in Val di Cornia in Tuscany, close to the small beach town San Vincenzo. This is a winery that is also well known in the US, often being in the top of the classifications made by Wine Spectator, Richard Parker, and others. The other winery belonging to them, Poggio Argentiera, is situated further south in Maremma in Tuscany, close to Marina di Alberese. In mid-June, I was invited with some other wine people to a wine tasting of their wines as well as a visit to the Poggio Argentiera estate. Page 142 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
A bit of history about Tua Rita and Poggio Argentiera In 2015, it was announced that Tua Rita would take over the management of Poggio Argentiera by means of a long term leasing contract ending in 2039, thus creating the Tua Rita Group. Thus, a merger was made between two important wine producing realities in Val di Cornia and the lower Maremma area, Tua Rita and Poggio Argentiera respectively. Let’s start by talking about Tua Rita, which was founded by Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti in Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
1984 who were starting out with only 5 acres of land. This would soon be extended to 22, 50, and finally the around the 74 acres it has today. It is organically certified and their aim is to strengthen the vines and work towards a healthy soil and surroundings. Apart from Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti, a key figure in the more commercial development of the winery has been, and is, Stefano Frascolla, their son-in-law. Since 2010, Simena Bisti, his wife and the daughter of Rita and Virgilio, is has also been a part of the daily management of the winery. Recently, they have also opened a wine Page 143 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
bar and restaurant, Winó, in San Vincenzo. The general manager of the Tua Rita Group is Paolo Fillini, who used to be an executive within the iron and steel industry in Piombino. Now, let’s look closer at Poggio Argentiera. Giampaolo Paglia, an agronomist native of the Maremma territory, started up this winery in 1997. It comprises the two smaller farms, Adua and Keeling, with a total of 50 acres of vineyards and is organically certified since 2009. This estate produces wine within the denomination Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The Vineyards denomination Morellino di Scansano. According to the regulation, Morellino di Scansano DOCG wines have to contain at least 85% Sangiovese and the rest can be other red grapes which are typically cultivated within the area. Even though the winery was only founded in 1997, the Adua estate dates back to the early 20th century.
The vineyards The vineyards of Tua Rita are situated on a slightly sloping hillside and the soil is mainly rock, clay, sand and very rich in minerals. More precisely, the vineyards of the estate are situated in the area called the Colline Metallifere (metal-bearing hills), a name alluding to the high concentration of metals and minerary resources in those hills. This also has a considerable impact on the wines produced in this area. Page 144 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Thus, there are significant ferrous and sapid notes in the wines of Tua Rita. The vineyards of Poggio Argentiera’s Adua farm are facing the sea, while the vineyards of the Keeling farm are situated on the hills in the Scansano district. The nature in the “lower” part of the Maremma area is a bit more wild and untamed, and consisted of marshland up until the early 20th century when it was recovered and thus became arable land. The soil at the Adua farm is mostly loam and sand, while rockier at the vineyards belonging to the Keeling estate on the hills in Scansano.

wine bar, WinĂł. After a brief introduction by Stefano Frascolla, we were guided through the wines of Poggio Argentiera and Tua Rita by the young and dynamic oenologist Alberto Biagini, as well as by Stefano himself. Poggio Argentiera produces the wines Maremmante Maremma IGT, Bellamarsilia Morellino di Scansano DOCG, and Capatosta Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG, their most important and well known wine. Maremmante Maremma IGT is a 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Syrah wine. It is an aromatic wine with notes of undervegetation typical of the Mediterranean and you can also feel a strong influence of the sea. The Bellamarsilia Morellino di Scansano DOCG is a 100% Sangiovese with the
typical notes of red fruit. It is fermented and aged in steel vats. Last, but not least, the Capatosta Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG is a wine made with the grape varieties Sangiovese and Alicante. It has notes of red fruit, leather, and cacao. It ages in oak barrels for 15 months and then in bottles for another 15 months. We also had the opportunity to taste a couple of samples directly from the barrel based on Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Grenache that they are experimenting with in order to decide how to develop the labels of the winery for the coming years. It was indeed very interesting to taste these samples and listen to Alberto Biagini talk more in detail about the work they are doing to analyze the different blends.

The wines of Tua Rita
Visit to the wineries
Tua Rita, as I mentioned above, is already speaking a language of their own on the international scene. Redigaffi, which is a 100% Merlot was awarded 100/100 points by Robert Parker in 2000 and is also generally awarded between 90-95 points by Wine Spectator most years. Kerin O’Keefe, writing for Wine Enthusiast, has described it as a “firmly structured but polished” wine with notes of black cherry, pepper, licorice, and coffee. Another of their wellknown red wines is Giusto di Notri that is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Other wines they produce are Rosso dei Notri, Perlato del Bosco, Syrah and the white wines Lodano and Perlato del Bosco Bianco.
The two wineries are, as mentioned above, a bit distant from each other, about an hour by car. However, it can be a nice outing if you pass by Tuscany to visit them both. At Tua Rita, you can book a visit both in Italian and in English, which includes a tour of the vineyards, the winery, and a wine tasting. Regarding Poggio Argentiera, you can also call them to book a visit to their estates. If you happen to be in San Vincenzo, you can stop by Winó, their wine bar and restaurant, for a drink or dinner. During the summer period, it is open every day both for lunch and dinner.

My Wine Story My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-

dominated audience together with a couple of translator colleagues, changing the course name to Words at the Winery. The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. In the autumn of 2014, we organized another Words at the Winery seminar at the winery Feudi di San Gregorio, near Avellino. During last year, I held smaller informal minicourses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fellow sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firenze. At the moment, I am working on putting together a new seminar on wine terminology in English for translators and people in the wine and tourism sector. Ingredients 2 full racks uncooked ribs, 3-4 lbs each (Baby Back or St. Louis both work well) Dry Rub: ½ cup brown sugar, packed 1½ tsp smoked paprika 1 TB kosher salt 1½ TB freshly ground black pepepr ½ tsp cayenne ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp onion powder Sauce: 1 (18oz) bottle Sweet Baby Rays Honey BBQ Sauce (or your own favorite kind, bottled or homemade) 3 tsp Sriracha (for moderate spice level) 1 TB pure honey
Directions 1. Dry the racks of ribs with paper towels. In a bowl,
combine all dry rub ingredients and whisk to combine well. Pat and press dry rub onto both sides of rib racks. Tightly wrap each rack of ribs in foil, individually. Place in a single layer on a large baking sheet and let sit in fridge overnight. 2. Preheat oven to 325F. Bake foil-wrapped ribs, on baking sheet, for 2½ hours. 3. Remove ribs, let cool enough to handle, and remove foil. Discard juices. (Ribs can be prepared one day early up to this point; just cover and chill until ready to grill.) Make the sauce by combining all sauce ingredients in a bowl. Brush ribs generously with desired amount of BBQ sauce. Ribs will be very tender, so handle carefully. Place on heated grill for 5-10 minutes per side, or until charred in spots. Use a sharp knife to carefully slice ribs so they don't fall apart (should be fork tender!) Enjoy.

Ingredients
2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 1/2 tablespoons sweet paprika 2 teaspoons smoked paprika 4 teaspoons sugar 2-3 slices raw bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
Directions 1. Trim chicken of excess fat, then cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes. In a large bowl, toss the chicken with the salt. Then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour. 2. Turn all grill burners to high, close lid, and heat for about 15 minutes. Leave primary burner on, but turn off other burners. 3. Meanwhile, pat the chicken dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, combine the paprikas and sugar. Place the raw bacon in a food processor and pulse for about 30-45 seconds, until a smooth paste forms, scraping down the sides of the bowl twice throughout. Add the bacon paste and spice mixture to the chicken. Mix with hands or spatula until the ingredients are blended and chicken is coated. Thread the chicken onto the skewers, rolling or folding as needed to maintain 1-inch cubes. 4. Grill the chicken over the primary burner with lid closed, turning one-quarter of a turn every 2 minutes or so, until browned and slightly charred (about 8 minutes total for chicken breast and 10 minutes for thighs). Brush the top of kebabs with BBQ sauce; flip and cook until sauce is browned in spots, about 1 minute. Brush second side with sauce; flip and cook for another minute or so, until cooked through. Remove kebabs from grill and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve, passing remaining BBQ sauce separately, if desired. Page 153 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

about an hour or until fork tender.
2. Cool and cut the potatoes into bite sized chunks. Leave the skin on! It tastes better that way plus there are more nutrients left and it looks prettier. I put them in a separate bowl and once they cooled enough I put them in the fridge to cool all the way. This gives them an excellent texture and prevents the dairy ingredients from getting hot or the cheese from melting. If you are serving this salad hot then you don't need to cool the potatoes, just skip that step! 3. Mix the mayo and sour cream together in a bowl. Add to the potatoes, then add the onions, chives, bacon, and cheese. Salt and pepper to taste - I use a pepper grinder and a sea salt grinder for EVERYTHING so I never know exactly how much of either I put in. I think the taste is far superior to just using regular table salt and pepper. 4. Top with extra shredded cheese, bacon, and chives, and serve! This is a simple and inexpensive side dish for any meal but especially great to take to a barbecue. My favorite part is that this is one of the regular ole recipes that anyone would make without realizing that it happens to be gluten free naturally. Those are my favorite! No special ingredients or expensive grocery stores, just regular food that I can eat along with everybody else. And it's delish! :) Source: http://www.thisismykeywest.com/2013/05/16/loaded-baked-potato-salad/ Page 154 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Ingredients 8 slices bacon, halved 1 medium onion, cut into small dice ½ medium green pepper, cut into small dice 3 large cans (28 ounces each) pork and beans ¾ cup barbecue sauce ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup distilled or cider vinegar 2 teaspoons dry mustard or 2 tablespoons Dijon
Directions 1. Adjust oven rack to lower-
middle position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Fry bacon in large, deep sauté pan skillet until bacon has partially cooked and released about ¼ cup drippings. Remove bacon from pan and drain on paper towels. 2. Add onions and peppers to drippings in pan and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add beans and remaining ingredients bring to a simmer. (If skillet is not large enough, add beans and heat to a simmer then transfer to a large bowl and stir in remaining ingredients). Pour flavored beans into a greased 13-by 9-inch (or similar size) ovenproof pan. Top with bacon, then bake until beans are bubbly and sauce is the consistency of pancake syrup, about 2 hours. Let stand to thicken slightly and serve.

Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Mary Ellen Jones, an executive at Pratt & Whitney, a world leader in aircraft engine technology and division of United Technologies Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. Mary Ellen was named Vice President Sales - Asia Pacific & China for Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines in January 2014. She leads P&W’s Asia/Pacific and China sales organizations in selling Pratt & Whitney products and services in this economic epicenter. Mary Ellen was most recently Vice President of Commercial Engines Customer Support and Americas Sales, where she was responsible for P&W’s worldwide Commercial Engines Customer Support organization and initiatives, as well as for sales of Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines products and services in North and South America. Prior to that role, Mary Ellen was president of the Engine Alliance, the 50/50 joint venture between GE Aviation and P&W that manufactures and supports the GP7200 engine for the Airbus A380 aircraft. Mary Ellen has worked for three years in Toulouse, France directing P&W’s operations at Airbus headquarters. In her free time, Mary Ellen chairs the Connecticut Airport Authority, which sets direction and strategy for Bradley International Airport and five general Page 160 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

aviation airports in the state. On March 31, 2016 Mary Ellen assumed the presidency of the Wings Club Foundation, a nonprofit global society of aviation professionals. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the ISTAT Foundation and on the Board of Incheon Aviation Tech Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney and Korean Air. A graduate of Michigan State University and Johns Hopkins University, Mary Ellen is married and has a 19-year-old son. CL: What and who influenced you as a child? MES: My initial influences, of course, were my parents. They’ve always been quite devoted to each other, which gave me a very positive view of married life. They had a traditional marriage for the time, with Dad working 9-5 as a purchasing manager and Mom ruling the roost with four children born in six years. I’m the oldest. As I approached Page 162 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
high school my mother went to work in a pediatrician’s office to help save money for college. She loved the job and the interaction with the children and their parents. It was only many years later that she told me she would have liked to have gone to work sooner; something like working a few nights a week in a department store to have some time on her own away from the constant family demands. Education was important to my parents. While we kids were young, my father Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
large family and had five older sisters. They had loud and often argumentative and political dinner conversations with their parents and brothers, which was very different for me. The girls were focused on education and all had part-time jobs to help with expenses. They had career goals and I think all of them got graduate degrees. That dynamic appealed to me: the focus on career with a good dose of assertiveness thrown in. CL: Since graduating from Michigan State University in 1982, you've spent your almost entire career with United Technologies. How many different positions have you held during the past 34 years? attended college at night to earn his bachelor’s degree. I remember my mother typing his papers late into the evening. As the public schools in our area just north of the Bronx weren’t very good, my parents struggled to save money to put us all through Catholic grade and high schools, and then helped all four of us with college. They did without for our benefit. As I got older, I spent a lot of time with my friends. My best friend came from a Page 163 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
MES: I joined UTC in 1983 as an assistant to the head of government relations in DC. It was a very entry-level job, but I was blessed with a boss who saw something in me and gave me increasing responsibilities fairly quickly. Some 30+ years later, I still stay in touch with him and my other early mentors. So far, I’ve probably held more than a dozen jobs with UTC. I’ve not only lived in Washington, Connecticut and France but, as part of the aviation industry, I’ve traveled around the world; more than I’d ever dreamed possible. Majid Al-Suwaidi, Mary Ellen Jones, James Hogan CL: Isn't it unusual for someone to have held so many different roles? In terms being able to rotate through different jobs, that's rather unique in the business world. What is the advantage of this unique United Technologies' policy? MES: UTC is a massive company with a lot of opportunities in very different industries – aerospace, security and commercial/ industrial with companies like Carrier and Otis. I don’t think it’s that unusual to have that many different roles over a long career. The company encourages cross-fertilization across the different divisions, though I have happily been with Pratt & Whitney for just about all of my career. My different jobs have come about through a combination of being tapped on the shoulder and my own Page 164 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
initiative in seeking out new opportunities. CL: You are definitely a woman who knows how to “Lean In”. Can I ask which position is most memorable and why? MES: Several come to mind, among them my job leading P&W operations in Toulouse, France, the headquarters for Airbus. We moved there as a family in 2000 and stayed for three years. It was a big leap of faith for my husband, who decided to quit his job so we could all experience life in Europe. Our son was four at the time, which was perfect from a mobility standpoint and also from an educational perspective. He picked up the French language very quickly at school – and in fact is now majoring in French and physics Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Brad Tilden, Mary Ellen Jones, John Kuehne in college – and we all enjoyed traveling around Europe on weekends and vacations. Another memorable role was being president of the Engine Alliance, a joint venture between P&W and GE that provides the GP7000 engine for the Airbus A380 superjumbo aircraft. The A380 was launched while I was living in Toulouse, and it was a great experience to engage with Airbus and customers as we opened new markets for that amazing airplane. It was also interesting coming together with GE – normally a fierce competitor of ours – to develop and support the engine. I think those competitive juices brought out the best in both of us. And finally, I’m loving my current role leading commercial engines sales for Asia and Page 165 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
China. It’s such a fast-growing part of the world, and the cultures are a wonder. The food’s pretty terrific, too. My Asia team and I are based in Connecticut, which makes for a long commute to see our customers, so we’re on the road often. My China team is based primarily in Beijing, where their language skills and customer knowledge are key. CL: You mentioned having lived in Toulouse, France. What was most challenging about the three years during which you and your family lived in Toulouse, France? MES: The most challenging thing at first was getting used to the culture and the all of the French that was spoken around us! Steve and I took French lessons, though it didn’t stick nearly Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

It was also quite a change for my husband to be without a paying job for the first time in many years. That meant he was the one dealing with daily challenges of grocery shopping, getting Mick to and from school and engaging with other parents, mostly mothers, and coping with normal frustrations of getting the cable installed and the washing machine repaired, all in French. He was so successful at developing lasting friendships and local golf buddies. While in France, he also earned a
MES: Getting to know the culture and the people. We came to appreciate the more laid-back approach and the better work-life balance. Toulouse is a lovely city near the sea and the mountains. We also traveled extensively in France and in Europe, which was a great benefit to our son. All the traveling we’ve done has made an impression on him, to include appreciating his way of life and being very aware of the world outside of the US. Mick and I made time to learn to ski in the Pyrenees Mountains.

CL: During those years in France, what did you find most personally rewarding?
Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
CL: What advice would you offer to any man or woman considering accepting a position abroad? MES: Do it! But make sure your family is up for the challenge and gets the support they need. And think about how you want to live there. Although we had a house in the United States with a large yard and garden that Steve really enjoyed, we opted for apartment living in downtown Toulouse, which made it easier to walk places and to have our weekends free to explore the countryside, rather than tending to home and garden maintenance. CL: You served as President of the Engine Alliance for three years ending in March 2013. What was it like to 'crack through the glass ceiling'? MES: It actually felt like a very natural progression. I had been the Sales VP for the Engine Alliance when I returned from Toulouse, and after that led P&W’s Commercial Engines Marketing organization. That kind of experience, along with my time working with Airbus in Toulouse, made for a very good fit for the EA president’s job. Gender wasn’t a factor. CL: What do you think is the most important attribute of a good leader? MES: So many things. Openness, generosity, vision, confidence, ability to make tough decisions. And people skills. Page 168 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
I recently read a quote attributed to former US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on leadership: “No peacocks, whiners or jerks.” That’s a good summation. CL: In 2013, why did you make the shift to a Vice President of Global Customer Support and American Sales? MES: I’ve generally stayed in most of my jobs for 3-4 years – long enough to still feel the excitement and make an impact, but not so long that it becomes rote. I hadn’t managed a customer support team previously. It’s one thing to make the sale; with customer support I was Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
in the midst of the aftermath, when the product was in service with the customer. It gave me an additional perspective on what’s important to our customers and how we need to strategize internally to anticipate and satisfy their requirements.
.
CL: It’s obvious that for over 15 years, travel has been an important part of your various positions. How many countries have you traveled to? Which stand out as personal favorites? I’ve been to more nearly 50 countries so far. France stands out, both as a sentimental favorite from our time living there and because of its gorgeous countryside, language and food. CL: Much of your responsibilities have been in the Middle East and Asia. Did you ever feel that, as a woman, you had less credibility or were not treated equally? MES: I did have some initial trepidation when I first traveled to the Middle East more than 10 years ago, but I’ve never had any difficulties in dealing with my customers. The people I’ve worked with there, most – but not all – men, have been respectful and professional and, in fact, very welcoming. I was at the Dubai Air Show late last year and was happy to catch up with many of my friends from regional airlines. My experiences in Asia have been similarly positive. CL: What have you learned from dealing with the many diverse cultures from around the world? Page 169 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

MES: One of the biggest lessons I try to incorporate is to go with the flow and not be an uptight American. There are many different ways of doing things in the world – and quite a variety of things to eat! It’s infinitely more interesting to be aware of and appreciate those differences. CL: What was your most memorable professional moment? MES: I have many – I still remember the trust my first boss placed in me, my first international business trip to Dubrovnik, and my first sales job in the late 1990s at a time when there were very few women in those roles. Most recently, I was named president of the Wings Club Foundation, a 74-year-old aviation society based in NY, so that’s pretty special. CL: Describe your approach to professional mentoring? MES: I do a lot of mentoring – I suppose that shows how long I’ve been around! Some of my mentees come in with a thought-out career plan while others are looking for guidance on what they should do next. I share my experiences – the good and the not-so-good – and encourage them to understand what they like and don’t like to do. While we like to see well-rounded people with different experiences, I always recommend people do a gut check before taking on a new role. I’ve learned that Page 170 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

money or prestige are not the right reasons to take a job – you have to feel the passion for it. CL: Drawing on your experience, how can female executives put what you've learned into practice? MES: Don’t count on the company to look out for you – that’s your job. If you see a job out there that looks interesting, ask what it takes to get it. And if you see a job you want now, make your interest known. That’s how I got my Toulouse role. And while women may be considered consensus-builders, don’t worry about being Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
MES: Make sure you have a life outside of work. It makes you more interesting. And even within work, take on an extra-curricular or two, such as volunteering for a company supported charity, working on employee engagement, or other team, etc. Those kinds of things give you added visibility and can bring out new skill sets, as well as contribute to the workplace and community. Don’t hesitate to ask someone to mentor you. Just about everyone is happy to share their knowledge and experience. Just make sure you come prepared with good questions and observations.
unpopular or pushy when you need to press a worthy idea or argument. Stand up for yourself. I’d add that I’m very big on attitude – the good kind. It’s something I look for when hiring people and the attribute I most appreciate in working with colleagues. There are a lot of smart people out there, but the ability to be positive, proactive and supportive is just as important. And, you need to be willing to take some risks. Being one of the first women in jet engine sales was a risk both the company and I took, and certainly launching off to Toulouse was an outside the box decision for my husband and me. CL: What advice would you offer to a young woman just embarking on her own career? Page 171 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
CL: You've been married to the same man you met while still a young student at MSU and together you have successfully raised a son. What advice would you offer to women trying to juggle career and family? MES: Make sure you find a loving and generous partner, as I was fortunate to do. You can’t possibly do it all yourself, nor should you. It can be especially tough with young kids as they need so much. When Mick was a baby we had a young woman come to the house everyday with her own young daughter looking after him – that was a great arrangement for us as we didn’t have family nearby. And while they’d never admit it, kids need you just as much in the tumultuous teenage years. store or walking the dog. Our family trips have always been good bonding times, too. And remember my advice about looking after yourself. The company will always take care of itself – you need to do the same for you and your family. CL: What do you see as the world's most urgent problem(s)? MES: Lack of tolerance and compassion. CL: What tools do you use to relax and what are your personal interests? MES: With Mick off at college our dog Rudy is my baby. I like taking Rudy out on Page 172 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
long walks.. Steve likes to play golf. Even though I’m a marginal golfer, I try to to take him up on his invitations to hit the greens. And even with all of the travel I do for work I still like to travel for pleasure with the family. Most recently we went on a great hiking trip in Utah over Mick’s spring break. CL: Is there anywhere else in the world that you would still like to visit and why? I haven’t spent much time in South America and would like do some exploring there, as well as visit Antarctica. I’d like to spend more time in Australia and New Zealand and revisit Asia. Five years ago, we vacationed in Singapore, Hong Kong, Cambodia and Thailand but, there’s still so much more to see!

This summer, female computer science students at Northwestern are keeping busy and learning new skills at their summer internships. Here’s a look at what they’re doing.
Upasna Madhok, Microsoft Rising junior Upasna Madhok is an explorer intern at Microsoft. This summer, she’s working on researching and developing a business product with Microsoft Business Solutions. Her work is research-oriented. Madhok said her favorite part about her internship is her team. “The leadership that’s working with us is very cool,” Madhok said. “They include us ... in their meetings. They ask for your opinion. is treated as a full-time employee, not just an intern. This summer, she learned industry-oriented skills such as how to write documentation, specification, user requirements and user limitations. In addition, she learned about prototyping and creating personas and scenarios. “You have to keep track of all the things that you take for granted in school,” Madhok said. From working on a large project, Madhok has also learned more about communicating, and she has been able to switch between different roles. Hayley Hu, Motorola Solutions Rising junior Hayley Hu is interning as a software developer in Motorola Solutions’ mobile applications team. She is working on a project for internal communications in companies. “I’m doing a small part in a really big project,” Hu said. “It has a lot of functions, including messaging and locations.” At first Hu had to do automatic unit testing for the functions the project already had. Page 177 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Then, she switched to developing the project’s location function. Originally, Hu did not have experience in Android Studio or Java, but she has picked these skills up on the job. She is also learning about the development cycle and has attended several meetings, where employees talked about how they launched different versions of the app. One valuable skill she has learned about was iteration. “While we were fixing this previous defect, there were new problems coming up,” Hu said. “I’m learning how they iterate in the process of software development.” Hu has also learned much from other employees in the company. The most important skill she has learned was teamwork, as this is her first experience working in a large company. “They are open for me to talk to them, so I can Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Alaina Kafkes, GE Healthcare Rising senior Alaina Kafkes is interning at GE Healthcare this summer. She is working on a small agile team to develop a product that allows the uploading of images and videos to a medical database. She is working on the server side, which she has not had very much previous experience in. Now, she is picking up these skills. “A lot of my experience is not related to servers,” Kafkes said. In fact, I haven’t worked with servers besides simple light web servers. Now, I’m getting more flexible with technologies like ExpressJS, NodeJS, and Angular 2.”
”Kafkes also enjoyed the relationships she has formed while interning. On the first week, GE Healthcare flew the interns to Milwaukee. “They had a week of teamwork and bonding and learning what it’s like to work at GE Healthcare,” Kafkes said. “I thought it was awesome that GE truly values the working relationships in the company.”
When she does not know how to do something, she makes sure to ask. “I’ve relearned the importance of asking questions,” Kafkes said. If I don’t understand something, I know not an expert on server side code, so I check up with my manager every day to let him know how I’m doing and to talk about why I’m stuck Page 178 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Dear Reader, Hello and welcome to our first WiC Bits spread! WiC stands for Women in Computing, which is a Northwestern University organization that fosters a community for and promotes the professional development of undergraduate and graduate women in technology. If you'd like to learn more about my organization and ways in which you can get involved, check out the WiC website: http:// eecs.northwestern.edu/wic/. In late July, I attended an entrepreneurship conference in which something striking was said to me: technology should harness

human intentions, not impose them. What we build needs to fit seamlessly into what our target audience already wants to do. This sounds straightforward, but it can be easy to forget. In my entrepreneurial ventures, I've found that techies tend to slap the term "usercentered" onto their product only after they've built it, rather than taking the time to do ample, iterative research throughout the development process. Human-centric design goes beyond the engineering sphere. On behalf of WiC, I would love to hear about what you would like to gain, learn, and explore from reading WiC Bits. This month's spread features different summer internship experiences, and gives you a taste of the broad interests of WiC members, from health technology to mobile development. My home institution, Northwestern University, emphasizes interdisciplinary study within engineering fields (termed "CS+X"), so WiC is brimming with diverse passions just waiting to be shared. After reading this month's spread, I encourage you to tweet to @NUWiC with your suggestions. I hope you enjoy our first piece! Northwestern University Women in Computing Short Bio: Founded in 2012, Women in Computing (WiC) initially sought to disrupt Northwestern University's male-dominant computer science major by creating a space for those who identify as women. Now, WiC has become a full-fledged community for women who share an interest in technology and code, and the primary advocate for females in the computer science major. WiC hosts weekly programming tutorials, organizes lunch-and-learn tech talks with corporate and academic professionals, and volunteers to teach middle school girls the principles of computer science. One of the hallmarks of WiC membership is attending the annual Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing; WiC aims to send all interested members to this conference in order to promote professional development and WiC friendships. WiC is currently headed by external president Meg Grasse (meggrasse@u.northwestern.edu) and

After several days of much maligning of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement with regard to recent police shootings, I think it is time to address the (blue) elephant in the room. As a retired, twenty-year veteran sergeant of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and a black woman and a mother of four black young men, I come from both worlds. Let me say, because there is often a lot of speculation about my police career, I spent the majority of my LAPD career working in field operations. That is in uniform, in a black and white, in patrol or patrol related assignments. I was a police officer and a police sergeant - not a detective, behind a desk. I speak to this in Page 184 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
my autobiography, The Creation of a
Manifesto - Black and Blue. Having said that, I too am saddened by the loss of life on both sides; police and community. I am frustrated that there seems to be no end in sight. I am concerned that one of my sons could be stopped for some minor traffic infraction and then killed by an over-zealous, drunk with power, ill-suited for the job police officer. Our children, and in some cases our babies are being killed with reckless abandon. So, let's not pretend that the horrific police shootings in Dallas and Baton Rogue were a direct result of BLM protests. Let's stop pretending the police don't have a role to play in Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
all of this violence. Let's address the [blue] elephant in the room. Families of those killed by police whom I have spoken with, people who reach out to me on social media and my colleagues in the National Coalition of Law Enforcement Officers for Justice, Reform and Accountability will not be silent about the root cause of the violence.
I DO NOT condone violence against police. I DO NOT condone violence by the police. It is further troubling for the black community when someone like Sheriff David Clarke and others try to blame BLM, which denounced the Dallas shooting. It continues to feel like a devaluation Page 185 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
of black lives in pursuit of a scapegoat. I think some black folks, especially those in law enforcement, think that they just took a test, passed it and somehow magically ended up on the police force. Some black folks in law enforcement have enjoyed the benefits of affirmative action, promoted up the ladder only to shut the door behind them. I have worked with and for people who look like me on the police department who maintain the current system because it benefits them and theirs. There are some black police officers who sit in a position of comfort and convenience and are unwilling to not Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
admit that someone of consciousness and color put their body on the line to create that opportunity for them to even become a police officer. I am reminded that there was a time, not to long ago on the LAPD when two blacks could not even sit in the same police car. If not for the people of good will who stood, fought and sacrificed - Clarke could not speak the way he does. Harriett Tubman said, "I freed thousands of slaves. I would have freed more if they didn't know they were slaves." So, I question the humanity of anyone who revels in the loss of life. Driving a car with a "busted tail light", "no front plate", "inoperable tail light" or selling items on a public street does not qualify as a death sentence. When white police officers confront armed white men in open carry states or pursue a Page 186 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
white fugitive who shot and killed an officer, as in Eric Frein, the outcome is very different. White police officers almost lay down and expose their soft under-bellies to a confrontational, armed white man as they patiently listen to the agitator explain his 2nd amendment rights. Yet, we as a black community are repeatedly told that our black unarmed sons scare the police. We are tired of the police killing our children. We are frustrated because police departments circle the wagons and protect errant officers. We want accountability when officers violate department policy or law, escalate interactions to a deadly force shooting [ Redel Jones, Ezell Ford] and then lie to us. And some of us don't have the skill set to deal with those outcomes. So let's take Micha Johnson at his word Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
when he said during the Dallas standoff that he was NOT affiliated with any group and Gavin Long when he expressed on social media what appears to be his frustration with events occurring in the minority community. To those who might act out similarly, I say don't. Killing police officers is not helping. Killing police officers is wrong. Let's not create an environment whereby police departments justify militarization of their force. Let's address the elephant in the room. Let's have honest and candid discussions on how to re-build trust and improve the relationship between police and the minority community. It's time to include police officers who don't speak code talk, who are honest in their assessments and have lived experiences as both a minority and police officer from which to draw. It's time to invite members of the Page 187 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
National Coalition of Law Enforcement Officers for Justice, Reform and Accountability to the table.

How many times do you end your day with this thought: “Wow I didn’t get anything done that was on my priority list.” The puzzling part is that you were busy all day long. So what’s going on that causes you to never actually get to your massive to -do list?
Obviously you lost control of your day. You probably got interrupted with a billion issues – clients called, your team had questions, something blew up and you had to deal with it. Even if you got much better at managing unplanned interruptions, you’d still end up with a todo list that doesn’t get finished. What if you could liquefy time and magically make your days longer? Especially when you feel behind?Well there are a few little shifts in how you see time that can actually change how you use it. Here’s a few of the ways that I activate “liquid” time to get more done (especially when my task list just seems impossible!) Page 190 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Make a Clear Decision On Your “Work Time” The first thing you have to do is create a new standard for your life – how many hours a day are you really going to work? What’s best for your stress level? Your other priorities like family and community? Listen, there will always be more work that there is time to get things done. When you decide to have a life outside of work, then magically, you’ll become better at saying NO to distractions and YES to your priorities. The key is creating a clear boundary around your work time and your personal life. For instance, “I leave work at 6:00 pm no matter what” is a boundary that helps you and the people in your life know when you are available for work activities. Be sure to close the office door and turn off email when its time to be “off” work.
Tell Yourself Something Better The words and thoughts in your mind have a huge impact on how stressed out Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
you feel. We create messages to ourselves and others about how overwhelmed we are. If you tell yourself you are running out of time then the stress you feel will unconsciously slow down your activities. Start telling yourself, “I have all the time I need.” You will keep your mind calm and have more focus. It might even help to visualize a fast-rushing river flowing around big rocks. I like to say to myself, “Flow like water around obstacles.” Keeping my mind calm and focused on what’s next is the key.
Write Out Your Priorities Instead of keeping your to-do list in your head, make a list of what needs to get done. When your action list is in your head it’s difficult to tell yourself the truth about how long everything will take. Often your task list is much bigger in your head which creates that daunting, overwhelming feeling. By making a list, prioritizing the tasks and just putting your head down and focusing you’ll be able to knock out twice as many tasks in a shorter period of time than you ever thought possible. For on-going activities and bigger projects, try using a low-cost project management tool like TeamWorkPM.com orAsuana.
Manage the Interruptions Unplanned interruptions can get the best of even the savviest time manager. Be sure to turn off distractions – your phone, social media, email and your instant messenger. It’s impossible to use your time wisely if you are constantly being interrupted. Give yourself a block of time to focus without allowing any distractions so you can complete tasks – and check them off your list. This is where your boundaries MUST kick in. Don’t be seduced by other people’s emergencies. Create time to handle unplanned Page 191 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
issues but keep your focus on your core priorities first.
Develop a Better Strategy We all have a “strategy” for how we manage time. A strategy is a sequence of thoughts, actions and habits that generate a result. Ask yourself, “is my time management strategy getting good results?” If not, then it’s time to develop a more effective strategy. Hire an optimizer, a performance coach or take a course on how to manage your time effectively. By upgrading your strategy you will improve your mindset and habits around getting things done. Ultimately, learning to shift your strategy to get into a better flow will allow you to accomplish more in an hour than most people get done in a day. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Many people have asked me what drove my exhusbands to such violence. The language we have been taught since birth has clouded the truth for generations upon generations. I would like to clear up the misconceptions that most have learned growing up, and as adults have latched onto these beliefs as truth. I answer this curious question as I have come to discover it in the schoolroom of life through experience and not vocabulary. The belief system tells you it takes two to tango. In truth, it does not. In my human experience, what I have learned
we store data, we delete data, we back up files, and then one day we just
crash.
is that most hu-
mans operate as computers. When the system malfunctions, or runs slow.... we either blame the internet service, or fear that we have a virus and may crash. We never see ourselves beyond the hardware and the software. We hook up, we download, we upload, we store data, we delete data, we back up files, and then one day we just crash. When this happens to someone who has very heavy emotional pain from past experiences in their energy field,
Page 194 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
he or she will take down everything and everyone with them. All of the things that seemed important and critical in life vanish and not a single loving person in their world can re-boot them. Everything that has been stored on his or her brain eventually crash, and the entire way down they blame, accuse, misuse, abuse and torment the very person that has loved them all along. This is the cause for many people's addictions to alcohol, pain killers, recreational drugs, and even violence. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
They are all forms used to mask the pain. The problem is that it will only numb the pain temporarily, and yet the rubber band affect becomes far worse. Once they snap back to a more conscious state of mind, they don't know how to be, because they're so identified with this pain. The ego keeps telling them they are in danger, and so they keep up the addictions, and the bouts of anger and violence become heightened. They need no reason or provoking from their victim to be angry or act out in violence. .
Page 195 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
They have plenty of reason all on their own, wrapped up in a painful package in their mind called pandemonium. When a person is running on just their brain, where their ego has become their master, they behave as a crashing computer does. They see no other choice because they are not hooked up to the main server. They have forgotten the Source in which they have come into this world from. Our body was designed to honor love, so much so that the very doorway from Divine Oneness into this physical world on earth is created by physical love. It is the only way to get here. The truth is, our bodies are programmed in the womb, before the mind ever touches them, and before society adjusts the bodies to its own fearful conditioned mind patterns. This is why in my upcoming book, I write about the importance of connecting the heart, intuition, and the brain. And yes, our bodies are designed to dance...but they are designed to dance with the love and lightness that allows joy to enter. Dance is supposed to bring you joy. Anything other than this is not love. Another belief taught in society today is that the victim and their abuser are turned on by make-up sex. This is a gross misconception. For most of my marriage I never turned my husband down for sex. The enjoyment of it was gone, however. Here is the only analogy that comes to pen: You are served lamb chops for all year and really enjoy the tenderness. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Then one day you see the chef out back. He slaughters the little young intelligent lamb by stunning it. The method of stunning for the slaughtering of lambs and sheep is done worldwide. It involves the use of electric paddles placed on the animal's head, a shock given which results in convulsions in the lamb, and subsequently becomes unconscious, which is by no means effective or humane. There is no sense of human-ness present in this act, whatsoever. Next, you see the chef slit its throat open in order to sever the arteries and the animal is bled out. An hour later, chef comes in with this beautifully cooked lamb chop on a dish. Would you want to eat it? What I learned through experience is that the continuum of unloving acts in a relationship creates a gulf between the two, and the physical loving that was once there, can no longer exist. It cannot exist because physical loving is always an Page 196 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
expression that honors love. You cannot hit and name call one minute, and expect to be on cloud nine with that same person a few hours later. The very idea of that concept is pure madness. What I found is that this deranged thinking is not only a complete disconnect, but is also a form of mental illness which goes undiagnosed in many abusers. Love does not have a beginning and an end. It is not an act of doing that only takes place in the bedroom on command. Love is a state of being. When you honor love, it will follow through to a physical loving. When that relationship is void of honor outside of the bedroom, love Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
making becomes less desirable, and in my experience has never been used as a 'makeup' tactic. In actuality, instead of feeling loved, the victim feels bemused, and disoriented…lost in thought throughout the physical experience. Sometimes that confusion will linger for days, while the abuser exhibits no sign of confusion whatsoever. The third misconception is that people stay with their abuser because deep down, they want to suffer. The truth is, they stay because they are afraid. They are still believing fear. They fear for their physical mortality and that of their loved ones. However, at a deeper level, they also fear their own Page 197 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
evolution. They believe what they are being told by their abuser, and they believe their own negative thoughts as well. They have not yet recognized these fears as an illusion, which is all they ever are. Because of this, they are not ready for the shift, from thought into awareness. Ego still has a firm grasp on them. Additionally, a battered person is typically alienated from family and friends, or have mastered the secret so well that it becomes extremely challenging in their reaching out for help. Especially when in an affluent environment. Who will ever believe them? This is what fear tells them. So they go on living behind a veil of silence until they can no longer stand the suffering…or are found dead and on the front headlines of the News. The positive note in all of it is, when a person is ready for the shift into awareness and the remembrance of love, that awakening will birth an intense sense of peace. This was my personal experience and very much the motivation in writing my book. I honor my past pain and suffering as teachers in this life, and know that in sharing these stories, others can learn Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

from it and apply it to their own unique situations. Remember, it is not the unhappy story we are relating to, rather the truth in how our own unique pain and suffering around the globe, at whatever intensity they may be, are all reminders that pain and suffering is not our individual burden. As I expressed in last month’s column, your experiences are not your life, but are your life situation. The recognition of this can help you discover your essence identity, which will always bring you back home. When I speak of home, I speak of the heart. The core of your very being where that infinite love and light wraps you with power and wisdom that emerges from within. This is
your gift that can never be taken from you. Not in shame, nor fear. Not in regret, nor disappointment. You have done nothing wrong, and every decision made, and experience you had is what brought you to this moment, this invitation to awaken, and take your power back. As always, I honor your presence in reading this column, and look forward to coaching and mentoring you and your loved ones and pulling you through the gap from darkness into light. Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization
Presents
Nana and Nick Brandt
With 10 years of experience under her belt as top executive of a small but powerful organization, Nana had made more right choices than wrong. And her group had survived because of it. They had bested some of their rivals for resources and survived the elements and even full-on attacks by their natural and unnatural enemies. Nana carved out a place for themselves in an adversarial and competitive environment, one as unforgiving and harsh as an oppressive government regime. While on the surface all looked in harmony, she was fully aware that Frankie, a younger female exec, was next in line to take over and alert to any weakness Page 212 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Nana might have. She knew full well if she faltered, Frankie would happily step in to take her place and, in a moment, she would lose all control and command of the team she had worked so hard to build and protect. Her team had come to trust her implicitly. She held full sway over all important decisions made and almost minute to minute kept herself on high alert in order to continuously move her team into the best strategic positions for forward progress. When a windfall opportunity presented itself to consolidate and secure a position for the group in the relative safety of a wildlife preserve run by Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
world-renowned conservationist, Lawrence Anthony, she seized it. Footnote: (The full story can be found in an engaging book entitled: The Elephant Whisper. ) The elephant herd over which Nana was matriarch was finally in relative safety and could thrive Conversely, Qumquat and her family did not fare as well. While internationally renowned fine art photographer Nick Brandt memorialized her in a stunning photographic portrait, this magnificent elephant and two of her children were killed by a fierce enemy -– a poacher. We all need to be competent executives managing our day-to-day lives, whether you are leading a herd of elephants, or running a family, a job, a department or a company. And survival is what it is fundamentally about. Not the crude definition of survival – barely eking out an existence – but rather, how to obtain real survival, which includes thriving with abundance in all areas of your life and for all that are connected with you – from your mate, to your children, your extended family, friends, business associates, other life forms and every aspect of the world around you. This is a Life Assisting Life approach to living – a method for better survival taught by the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO). “Whether we are working with industry leaders or children, indigenous tribes or government regulators, LAEO helps people understand that no life survives alone. This better connects everyone with the natural world, resulting in more constructive decision-making and workable solutions. We take an educational approach that brings about life assisting life instead of life clashing with life. Page 213 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
We named this field of environmental science, Cooperative Ecology , and it guides every choice, decision, and strategic plan we make,” said LAEO’s Senior VP & Science and Tech Committee Coordinator Diane Wagenbrenner. Some of LAEO’s “Co Eco” lessons prompt selfexamination: How does each of us survive better? The answer? Start by simply looking! Look around yourself and decide to be more aware of the condition of people and things around you. Then find something you can do to make it a little better; to bring things into a little better harmony with the rest of the world; to help life co-operate a bit better with the rest of life. “Co Ecoing” some area of a person’s existence, whether that part of their life is relatively insignificant to them or is vitally important to their survival, is a fulfilling endeavor. A truly stellar example of this on a grand scale is Nick Brandt's extraordinary undertaking to stop the poaching of elephants in the Amboseli eco system in Kenya and Tanzania, and to bring the local villagers into better harmony with the natural world around them. Since 2001, Brandt has been documenting the vanishing natural world and animals of East Africa through his haunting, majestic photographic portraits of elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas, rhinos, and other large mammals. Returning to Africa to continue his work, he repeatedly found that magnificent wildlife he had photographed in earlier trips had since been poached or needlessly killed. He became painfully aware of the urgent crisis facing wildlife conservation in East Africa.
View INHERIT THE DUST Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Deciding to do something about it, he joined forces with world-renowned conservationist Richard Bonham. Together, they formed Big Life Foundation, raising the necessary funds to hire and train rangers and provide the needed outfitting for stable outposts including buildings, uniforms, tents, food, Jeeps, and weapons. Big Life has empowered over 350 Masaai rangers from nearby villages. As a result, poaching has been dramatically reduced to almost zero in an area covering over 2 million acres.
But the story does not end there. Three years after the conclusion of his African photographic book trilogy, On This Earth (2005), A Shadow Falls (2009), and Across the Ravaged Land (2013), Brandt returned to East Africa to photograph the escalating devastation to the continent’s natural world. In a series of epic panoramas, he recorded the impact of mankind in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. In each location, Brandt erected a life size panel of one of his animal portrait photographs, setting the panels within a world of explosive urban development and toxic wasteland. The arduous months of production to create each work resulted in stunning panoramas published in an oversized volume entitled Inherit The Dust in March 2016 that includes two incisive essays by the artist. Accompanying exhibitions featuring large-scale prints are being held at prestigious galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Berlin, among other cities. Page 214 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
On April 20th of this year, the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO) held a celebratory Earth Day event at the Fahey/Klein Gallery showing of the Inherit the Dust Exhibit in Los Angeles. Brandt was presented LAEO’s Elephant Whisperer Award for his extraordinary accomplishments as an artist, humanitarian and conservationist. Local LAEO members were able to meet Brandt, view his exhibition, and participate in a Q & A about his work to discuss solutions for bringing better cooperation between all life. Brandt’s Big Life Foundation story is worth connecting to at BigLife.org. Co-founded in 2010, this nonprofit has proven to be one of the most successful conservation programs in the world, dealing with conflict issues between man and elephant. While Earth Day seems to bring mostly bad news pushing negative messages about the many things wrong with our planet, we encourage people to focus on what is working, what is going right, and what can be done to make it better. Female Executives like Nana serve to set an elephant example for Cooperative Ecology Living. It is time more people Co Eco-ed their lives! Author’s note: In 2012, Qumquat fell to a poacher’s bullet. Nana still lives in peace with her herd at Thula Thula private wildlife reserve and can be seen there on the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s extraordinary Eco Safaris to South Africa. In 2009, she got a cataract, and Frankie promoted herself to Matriarch of the herd. Barbara Wiseman is the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s International President. OR DRIVING RESULTS, INSPIRING YOUR TRANSFORMING YOUR WORKPLACE
Author of S. CHRIS EDMONDS An organizational "North Star," codifying valued behaviors for optimal performance The Culture Engine shows leaders how to create a high performing, values aligned culture through the creation of an organizational constitution. With practical step-bystep guidance, readers learn how to define their organization's culture, delineate the behaviors that contribute to greater performance and greater engagement, and draft a document that codifies those behaviors into a constitution that guides behavior towards an ideal: a safe, inspiring workplace. The discussion focuses on people, including who should be involved at the outset and how to engage employees from start to finish, while examples of effective constitutions provide guidance toward drafting a document that can actualize an organization's potential. Culture drives everything that happens in an organization day to day, including focus, priorities, and the treatment of employees and customers. A great culture drives great performance, and can help attract and retain great talent. Page 223 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
But a great culture isn't something that evolves naturally. The Culture Engine is a guide to strategically planning a culture by compiling the company's guiding principles and behaviors into an organizational constitution. Decide which behaviors and attitudes are desired in the organization Secure leader commitment to planning, drafting, and implementing the document Learn the most effective way to socialize the draft statement and get everyone on board Model desired behaviors to boost employee engagement throughout the process Organizational culture is not an amorphous thing – it comes down from the top, inspired and exemplified by the leadership. It can steer a company up or down, keep it on mission or force it off-course. For an organization to fulfill its potential, the culture must be on-point, truly reflecting the heart of the company from leaders to team members across the company. The Culture Engine helps leaders define the playing field, pushing performance to the next level.

otential of America’s Young black Elite
Author Maya A. Beasley
,Why has the large income gap between blacks and whites persisted for decades after the passage of civil rights legislation? More specifically, why do African Americans remain substantially underrepresented in the highest-paying professions, such as science, engineering, information technology, and finance? A sophisticated study of racial disparity, Opting Out examines why some talented black undergraduates pursue lowerpaying, lower-status careers despite being amply qualified for more prosperous ones.
behind these students’ career aspirations, including the anticipation of discrimination in particular fields; the racial composition of classes, student groups, and teaching staff; student values; and the availability of opportunities to network. Ironically, Beasley also discovers, campus policies designed to enhance the academic and career potential of black students often reduce the diversity of their choices. Shedding new light on the root causes of racial inequality, Opting
To explore these issues, Maya A. Beasley conducted in-depth interviews with black and white juniors at two of the nation’s most elite universities, one public and one private. Beasley identifies a set of complex factors

Meet one of our
NAFE Women ANGELA COVANY Nafe Member of the Month I am so blessed as I get to meet some of the most wonderful and inspiring people from the world. Recently at my Murrieta Nafe meeting at Rjs Sizzlin Steer lunch meeting Angela showed up. She was invited there by another good friend Gary Hawthorne who met Angela at the Temecula Old Town Farmers market recently and he told her about Nafe since he does our Nafe website and all our marketing white boards. Anyway she did come and actually was called by him about 15 minutes before the meeting was to start as when he met her he had no idea of the meeting dates and times. Well being the dynamic woman she is she jumped in the car and was there so we were blessed to all get to meet her, she loved the meeting and the Mission of what Nafe stands for, so she has
joined Murrieta Nafe. You know I always say that SHOWING UP is like a treasure map, well she was my treasure that day and I guess meeting all of us was her treasure. I found in talking with her all the amazing things that she does and thought she would Page 228 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
be great to do an article on and to introduce you all to this fantastic young and dynamic woman. Her name is Angela Covany; let me share some information about her: She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and is an only child, she moved to Anaheim first and then when she was older she moved to Temecula where she has lived the last 15 years. She is married and has 5 children a daughter who will be starting college, a 15 year,13 year, 8 year old sons and a 6 year old daughter. Her husband is in construction. They live on land in the country that gives them room for animals and for their children to experience some country life with room to run and play. Some of her passions are cooking and as I talked to her I learned that she was a gourmet cook and fixes every type of food, this cooking passion started at age 7. She loves reading and loves to write and has started 3 novels. Out of one of her novels came the idea for the adult coloring book which she created and published with Blue Star Publishing, the book is called Silver Lining Abstracts. Angela has had a passion for art since she was young, Blue Star who is a big publisher of Adult coloring books saw one of her abstract photos Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
and contacted her to show them more of her work and it was great that she had a large collection that she had done for over 15 years, they loved it. Not only did they love her work and wanted her in their books they gave her a contract and that is how this first book got published, since then she has had one other published and is working on her third book. Since Angela was young she has seen everything through artistic lenses. As an adult, she has learned to live her life always finding the silver lining in all things. Her first book Silver Lining Abstracts allowed her to share her passion for illustrating and her passion for optimism to collaborate. Her images are
thought provoking and provide the artist in every one of us a truly genuine experience. Coloring used to be reserved for children and the occasional adult who got to babysit them, but recently, the activity has found a different demographic. What started as a niche hobby has now turned into an international trend, as adult coloring books find themselves on more and more bestsellers’ lists throughout the world. However, while this trend may be a fun way to pass the time, it’s the books’ therapeutic properties that really have them flying off shelves. Art may not be able to cure disease, but it can surely make coping with it a lot better. Researchers have acknowledged the therapeutic qualities of art for years, and today, art therapy is used to help people express themselves when what they’re feeling is too difficult to put into words, such as when they’re faced with a serious illness or find themselves depressed or stressed..
woman, she is almost finished with her third She has a great blog https:// artandabstracts.wordpress.com/ check it out, She is also on face book https:// www.facebook.com/ angela.covany. so go on her page and friend her. Angela loves her working relationship with Blue Star as she said they are an amazing company to have a relationship with. Angela is a woman with a dynamic personality and such a great positive attitude, she is a great mother and wife and a talented artist and now also a member of our Murrieta Nafe group. We at the Murrieta Nafe group are getting a great experience of having our own coloring book its an amazing book go to Amazon.com and put in her name Angela Covany or you can use the link below and it will take you right to the page where her book is. https:// www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=searchalias%3Daps&field-keyw or you can go to bluestarcoloring .com here is the link to the page her book is on http://www.bluestarcoloring.com/our-books/ page/7/, you can reach Angela also by email angelacovany6197@gmail.com Remember it’s all about SHOWING UP and I am so glad this dynamic women SHOWED UP as she is now a new friend.
