What is a Female Executive? I am the one that makes the bread, weaves the fabric, creates the peace, negotiates the smiles, shuts it down and wakes it all back up. I am the Swiss Army Knife of mankind. I am the one that gives birth and keeps life goingwhether I have to nudge it with my heart, my mind, my blood or my foot! I keep the bass rhythm of life moving. I am that female that executes the needed, the necessary and the fantastic. I am THAT female executive.

From the Editor and Chief Creative Officer Welcome to the New Year 2017 Issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. This month’s theme is Make a Powerful Joyful Noise!! Sometimes you have to roar with your happy. You have to let the world know that you’re here. Before we start this issue, let’s reflect back on the original text ”Make a Joyful Noise”. As you approach 2017 be mindful of your voice and the words you use to speak to people, family, friends and most of all yourself. A joyful noise from a joyful heart and mind can change those around it. Psalms 100 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. A joyful noise is what happens in a football stadium, what happens at a celebration, what happens when you are so very happy. And that means everybody. 2

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Be happy when you do a work for the lord. Because God will always out bless you. When you do your human thing for him, he will do his godly thing for you. You always win in a godly exchange. So be happy. Be so happy that you can break out into a song at any time. 3

Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. As humans, we should know who made who. The creator and the created. We are in his place, his people and this is all his situation. We didn’t get here under our own efforts. Likewise we have a present help “going through”. 4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. Anything we need, we have only to ask. We can start thanking him for it before we even go in to ask him for it. 5

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. What an amazing God that can speak to you and change all your future generations with a word of promise. His truth is the truth. May you have a blessed prosperous New Year! I hope you enjoy this issue. -Althea Ledford Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Becoming Becoming Location Location Independent Independent and and work work from from anywhere anywhere in in the the world, world, is is itit possible? possible?

Yes it is, people are doing it and they are called the ‘Digital Nomads’. Digital nomads are people who earn a living online and therefore have the freedom to work from any location they choose. This allows them to follow their greatest passion of travelling and discovering the world. They can work from a coffee shop in South East Asia for several months, move on to a beach in Australia and then go back home to spend Christmas with their family all while working online and planning their next exotic trip. People no longer have to spend years saving up or wait till they retire to take a trip around the world. If they can make enough money to pay and sustain their travels they can go as soon as they have set up an income source. You will find the digital nomad working on laptops in coffee shops, hotel lobbies or anywhere that has a public wifi connection. The digital nomads are travellers at heart and don’t feel like they fit into a 9 to 5 office environment. Although it sounds like it is all just fun and games, the digital nomad lifestyle

Page 20 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

is anything but easy, you have to work hard to earn your fun.

Different Location Independent Work Styles Having location independence in your work life sounds idealistic but it is becoming more of a reality than you would think. Not everybody that pursues a location independent life and work style wants to be a Digital Nomad and wander around the world. There are plenty of people who work remotely where they still have the benefits of a fixed salary and benefits but don’t have to commute to work. There are those who want to Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

choose their projects and working hours because they like the flexibility and, yet others who run their own online business so they have the freedom to choose which ‘home’ they work from. The ever growing technological advancements provide us with the opportunity to work from a location other than the typical office environment. This of course is not suitable for jobs in every field. Some examples of location independent jobs are: photographer or videographer, writer, graphic designer, web designer or developer, coach, eBay seller, Blogger, Scuba, skiing Page 21 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

or snowboard instructor, social media manager or consultant, virtual assistant, day trader, yoga teacher or personal trainer, tutor or translator, ecommerce entrepreneur and language teacher for online classes. Location independence in your work does not mean you have to become a digital nomad and wander around the world. There are various types of digital nomads with all slightly different preferences and needs. To give an impression of the various types, I will describe four different Location Independent Work Styles.

The Digital Nomad A digital nomad is someone who makes a living online and because of this has the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. They use the latest technology to create their own profitable income stream. This allows them to follow their greatest passion of travelling and discovering the world. A digital nomad is a self-taught multipede. Because you are running a business Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

within a virtual environment you won’t always have access to suitable facilities, you will need to constantly come up with new creative solutions. Due to limited financial resources, you will also need to teach yourself to manage all aspects of a business. YouTube tutorials and free webinars become your best friends.

The Remote Worker A remote worker is someone who works for an employer but completes their work in a different place than the workplace of the company. They can work from a home office or any environment they see fit. A remote worker has flexibility in what time of day they work as long as their work is completed and they meet their deadlines. A remote worker has all the benefits of a regular employee. They have a fixed contract, with a fixed salary and the benefits offered by their employer. They have fewer distractions because it’s easier to focus on work when it can be done in the comforts of a home office.

The Location Independent A location independent starts their own online business that is focussed on providing goods or services solely online. To run their business successfully they are not Page 22 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

bound to one location, they can work from anywhere. A location independent person will have their main focus on running a profitable business, enjoy working from home and plan their own schedule so they can travel whenever they want. A location independent usually has a home base or several home bases where they can live and work. They are more inclined to rent homes than buy in order to maintain global mobility.

The Free-lancer A free-lancer is someone who is selfSubscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

A location independent usually has a home base or several home bases where they can live and work. employed and typically works on projects for various employers. They sometimes work for agencies who advertise their skill set to employers or they approach employers with their own CV or portfolio. The online Free-lancer provides their services solely online. The main advantage of being an online free-lancer is that they can choose which and how many projects they would like to work on. They also choose which employer they would like to participate with in a project and can express their preferences and Page 23 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

terms within each job. Being entirely flexible in what hours they work and deciding if and when they take on a new project is of course also an added bonus.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The main advantage of a location independent lifestyle is that you have the freedom to design your own work and lifestyle. Rather than having your life revolve around work and only having strict holiday times this new lifestyle allows you to travel or spend time on your hobbies and passion project as well as work. Some people choose a location independent work style so they have more time for their families, not having to commute to and from work gives you more time to see your kids grow up. Once the kids go to school, they can work during school hours, pick up their kids from school and put in some more work hours once the kids have gone to bed. This means less money spent on day care and more quality time with your kids. Having global mobility and designing your life in such a way that you can also travel around or at least go on several longer trips gives you the cultural Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

insights you would never attain from reading and studying about intercultural communication, much less just visiting a country for a brief holiday. You will now have the time to immerse yourself in cultures and to build a global network both personally as well as professionally.

You will now have the time to immerse yourself in cultures and to build a global network both personally as well as professionally.

Next to the wonderful advantages, there are obviously numerous challenges as well. Without a working visa for each country you travel to the length of your stay will be limited, meaning you have to keep moving from place to place. Your business will usually be registered in your home country and this is not always easy to manage from a distance. When outsourcing tasks or looking for affiliates it is difficult to find other professionals who understand your chosen work style and who can meet your needs. Needless to say the location independent lifestyle does not provide you with any stability not professionally or personally. You are responsible for generating your own income and budgeting accordingly. This means you will live a somewhat minimalistic life, possessions will be few because you want to maintain global mobility. Once you have started a location independent life, it is very hard to go back Page 24 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

to a regular job and to live in one place. This usually becomes a topic of discussion once you start a relationship with someone who is not location independent or when you are a couple and the topic of raising kids arises. Age and health are also factors that play into seeking a more stable life. The concept of ‘home’ becomes somewhat fluid. When you move around from place to place or have several ‘homes’, your sense of belonging changes. Becoming a global Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

citizen means you don’t truly feel at home in any one place anymore. Family and long time friends will always stay dear to your heart but as you start seeing new things and adopting new customs from other countries and cultures it becomes harder to connect to your original ‘home’. Although the love within families is unconditional, the understanding and connection becomes less. You’ll have less and less in common with friends who have settled into a more traditional lifestyle. Your new community soon Page 25 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

consists of other nomads and location independents. But because everyone has a nomadic lifestyle it is still hard to maintain a stable social life, because everyone keeps moving on to other destinations. So where do you work and live as a Location Independent? You cannot possibly afford to maintain many houses with home offices. The answer to the growing trend of location independent work and living are the co-working and co-living spaces. All over the world co-working spaces rent out desks and provide access to meeting room facilities by the hour or day. In Asia and South America you can find co-living spaces where likeminded nomads enjoying their global mobility, reside with you in a temporary ‘home’. Why do people pursue a location independent lifestyle? There are rumours that the typical digital nomad is a millennial. They feel that with all the new opportunities created by the fast developing world of technology, there is no need to work in a 9 to 5 office environment. They are innovative thinkers who want to take advantage of the evolving trends and earn their living while benefitting from these advantages. You do not have to be a millennial to create or desire a Location Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Independent lifestyle, being experienced in a regular job adds many advantages to creating a location independent online business. Having had a mature and stable life should also not prevent you from pursuing this lifestyle. We can say that the type of person that pursues the nomadic part of the location independent lifestyle is often someone who feels they didn’t fit into the environment they were born and raised into. For some this lifestyle was born out of necessity. The urge to leave their home country, the urge to pursue an alternative life and work style comes from the restless feelings they experience when trying to fit in to the ‘norm’. Some nomads find that they never truly fit in anywhere and remain a nomad for the rest of their life. Or there are those that are curious by nature, they make several moves and then find a place to settle. All in all there are many different work and lifestyles and with the ever growing technological advantages there is no need to choose a traditional work style anymore. If you want to know which of the four different Location Independent work styles suits you, take our Survey on http:// workstyling.com/ After completing the survey we will send the specifics of your profile and more information about our training on how to design your Location Independent work and life. My Scam Fiancé Part 3 “The Surprise”

By Anna Corsaro & Daniel Djouder Page 29 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

WARNING <All the pictures portray a real American serviceman during the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which was a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan. His last name is Jones. His children and he are to be considered victim of the scam too. If you know him, please contact me. If we could manage to track down the scammer and led the authorities to him it would be an amazing result and teamwork.> “When a magician lets you notice something on your own, his lie becomes impenetrable.” By Teller ( magician) In part 3 of this series we pick up from where we left off in the previous issue. We will continue our journey through the psyche of a professional romance scammer and of his victim. Were you intrigued by Leonardo Jones' mind games? Did you put yourself in the shoes of a unknowing woman looking for her soul mate? Did his presentation raise your interest and moved your imagination? Well, we just scratched the surface in part 2. Read on and discover more tricks up Leonardo's sleeve and the surprise he had ready for me. Page 30 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

NOTE: the format is the same with Leonardo's message followed by my commentary and the victim's point of view marked by the “I victim” words. Music: I like the soul, soft jazz, reggae, R & B, smooth groves, some country and some rock (not much tho '). My all time favorite artists are Arron Neville, Kenny G, Luther Van dross and Diana Ross. I, like so many of his difficult to choose. (He is making sure that whatever kind of music his prey likes, he will be able to say that it is also one of his favorites. He knows that it is essential to love the same things.) Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Fav Songs Theme from Mahogany & Strangers on the Shore Movies: Action, thrillers and some comedies. I watch television every day rarely. My favorite actors. Hmmm ..... I like Wesley Snipes, Kevin Costner, John Travolta, Julie Walters, Sandra Bullock, Robert de Niro, Denzyl Washington, Samuel L Jackson. Fav movie Body Guard (A man who loves Body Guard, come on! I think this is a serious error in Leonardo Jones' repertoire. How can a woman believe a man loves Body Guard. OK, I did pretend to believe him and replied that it was also my favorite movie. I received no Page 31 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

comments on his part. So he had not probably watched it! "I victim” already dream to be Whitney Houston and he's my Kevin Kostner.) Food: I can not say that there is something I like but if I had to choose something that would be seafood, I'm not sorry for fishing alone! I like trying new recipes and flavors so I can cook anything (and like to experiment, but my best is steaks, roast dinner on Christmas Dinner sand I guess. I have a sweet tooth, I prefer salted, cheese, etc., but have a desert on rare occasions.. (He can even cook and loves Christmas dinner. "I victim”: he is a good husband and a good father.) Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Books I'm reading - I've been reading a series of books over the last while by Jacqueline Carey, 'Kushiel's Trilogy', except there are more books now than just the three! I love fantasy and science fiction but these days probably more fantasy than anything else. I used to read Arthur C Clarke when I was growing up, H.G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, and many more. After reading Tolkein's 'Lord of the Rings' over 30 years ago, fantasy seemed to really open up and it's my favorite switch off these days. Have read so many authors, it's hard to remember them all. Have read all of Jean Auel's novels (set in a pre-historic world), Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Janny Wurst, David Eddings, to name a tiny, tiny few. When I was growing up, I was always allowed to read for half and hour after I went to bed, so my love of reading stems from there. Did the same with Sebastian (Here Leonardo pushes me to tell him something about my childhood, but a victim does not see this, because she perceives other things. “I victim”: he is educated and knows how to raise his children.) and certainly Sebastian has blossomed Page 32 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

from this. He read his first novel by Rudyard Kipling when he was only 6 and read it in 10 days! He's never stopped since! He's also written his first book and is hoping to publish, so am keeping my fingers crossed.I like to write poetry and had a publication, I have a collection that should be collected in a book published .... and maybe one day? (Here Leonardo slips. He states that he writes poetry he also published some of it. Definitely, a romantic woman would find that to be fantastic news, but she would also ask to see said publication. Also, the grammar error is obvious and for a person who claims Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Sometimes We give Away Too Much Information.

to write poetry it is uncharacteristic, especially considering the whole message. Financially; I'm stable and independent. I always provide everything for my son and daughter (Sebastian & Kylie) (He reiterates that he does not need a woman to take care of his children, to give her reassurance that they will not be a burden.)

from the middle class, but he does not live in the US, but in Kent in the UK. A house as he is describing could cost more than a million and a half dollars. Two luxury cars in Europe would not be affordable by a serviceman. I see this as a clear error of Leonardo and it is obvious that there is something out of place, but the victim would read it differently. “I victim”: a responsible man who doesn't entertain silly ideas.) I feel like I've accomplished a lot with my time on this planet, but still see that life without someone special to spend with is sometimes boring. Faith; I was brought up as a Catholic and went to church every week (Leonardo Jones aims only at Catholic women. He feels that it is easier to persuade a Catholic woman when he will ask her money. So, he emphasizes that he is a good Catholic to suggest that he is an honest man. “I victim”: this is why he is so serious, I should have known before.)

that they need in life to be what they wants to be. Luckily, I have my own fully furnish 5 bedroom house and two luxurious cars... so life is good. (In the US he would be a man Page 33 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

until I was 13 years old when I was allowed to choose for myself so I chose not to attend church due to some personal reasons. I believe in the Holy Trinity and I believe in the Word of God. (Why Leonardo says he does not go to church? He simply knows that if I were a practicing Catholic I would have probably searched in my community or I would have tried Christian dating. “I victim: he is still a Christian, this is the important thing. After all, I too don't go to church every Sunday.) I always allow God to be the first and last in everything I do, because that's how I was raised. I sometimes take my son to church so that he can at least experience some of Page 34 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

the "ritual" and gain an understanding of the church, etc. I am NOT a racist and I wouldn't mind if you share with me about your believe. (Leonardo does not use the term racist correctly, otherwise he would have chosen a different word in this case, especially since he reads so many books. However, since many people use this term loosely they would not consider it a mistake. I pretend not to notice it and I just move on.) You can also tell me about your religion and the culture of your country.. Professionally I am a mechanical Engineer. So basically I work and supervise the maintenance of the jeeps and cars in the Army Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

(By declaring that after this mission he will retire he is not only saying that he will be free, but also that he will be able to move to a different city or country. After all, he has repeatedly stated to be be ready to do anything for a woman he loves. But how will this affect his victim? “I victim”: Afghanistan? UK? I thought he lived 200 miles from me. He lied. I am sure that wasn't on his profile "But the victim will not find Leonardo Jones' profile anymore because he deleted it as soon as she agreed to talk on private email. - “I victim”: and still I am certain that he lived near me, he owes me an explanation. Here starts the denial in the victim's mind, instead of deleting the profile because it is evident that he lied she thinks he has an explanation.) I have been here in Kabul for 3 months and I'm now looking forward to return home to UK very soon and peacefully. and have been working in the Army for 25years (In his profile he did not say to be in the army, he does only now. He adds that it has been 25 years to reinforce the idea he is a committed individual, hoping that the fact that it is a serviceman will fascinate me. “I victim”: I'm surprised and a bit shocked.) but I'm currently deployed in Afghanistan, Kabul (Kandahar) for Peace-Keeping, It's my last Mission here and will be getting ready for my retirement. Page 35 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

My woman ... I would love to have a woman in my life all the parties, with, for being my friend, lover, companion, confidant … (After confessing to the victim he does not live 200 miles away from her and that he is in Afghanistan, Leonardo knows that he could lose her and he must make her believe that he is the right man nevertheless. So, he just gives her what she hopes for.) my everything and return ...I do not care about the distance nor age, because the Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

What will be Leonardo's excuse for not having stated the truth about himself on his profile? Don't worry, I'll tell you in my next article. distance is one way and age is also a number . All is about who can make me happy and also trust her in all things and treat her like a queen and also make sure she becomes the Happiest woman Alive! Finally, I know my past, I do not quite understand this .... but I have enough faith to continue to speed toward the future----I think I'm writing too much eh! Take care of yourself and I could be very glad if you tell me more about yourself as I have nothing to hide from you.Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask please. (He points out that he wrote an encyclopedia rather than a letter, but he does so only to push her to do the same. He stresses that he has nothing to hide to her, "he is totally honest." What he is really saying is “I have not lied to you. Be careful not to call me a liar, because you risk losing a good man.” Then he offers to answer any question as proof that he is not a person who lies or who has something to hide.“I victim”: and yet I am certain that I was not wrong and he didn't write that he was a soldier. I have to ask him but I have to reply to his message. Let's hope that he likes me, I don't want Hopefully I will hear something Page 36 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

from you lose him!) soon. Enjoy your evening.. Cheers, Leonardo. What will be Leonardo's excuse for not having stated the truth about himself on his profile? Don't worry, I'll tell you in my next article. I had never spent so much time for a man in my life as I dedicated to him. The first month he wouldn't let me breathe, until I made him understand that I was in love. I also gave him enough information to make him believe that I was a golden goose. He was so relentless that I even dreamed of him... or actually I dreamed of the Jones in the picture, but still. If I that I was aware to be chatting with a scammer I dreamed of someone who does not really exist, a victim after a month of courtship would have had to be madly in love with this man. There was no doubt. If you think to be a victim of a scam romance, this link will be useful to know how to file a complaint: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ #&panel1-1 Keep reading about my investigation on next month's issue. Hunger: How How You You Can Can Help? Help?

“Hunger is a globally endemic problem impacting global stability and impeding peace”

As President Barack Obama stated, “Hunger, disease and poverty can lead to global instability and leave a vacuum for extremism to fill. So instead of just managing poverty, we must offer nations and people a pathway out of poverty. And as president I've made development a pillar of our foreign policy, alongside diplomacy and defense.” Hunger is more than the deprivation of healthy and sustained sustenance. Hunger creates wars like the five year drought and famine that precipitated the Syrian War against the rule of its President Bashar al Assad. Hunger creates protests fueled by desperation like those ongoing in Venezuela, where basic necessities are unobtainable even if money is available. Hunger and poverty is the fuel America’s that courses through the racial “Cradle to Prison” pipeline. Poverty and hunger elects presidents like President-Elect Donald Trump. Hunger creates a vicious cycle. While over 60% of the world’s impoverished are women, the greatest impact is on our youngest and most vulnerable global citizens. For instance, a child who grows Page 42 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

up hungry is likely to be illiterate and unable to provide for one’s family and self.

Unlike other issues confronting humanity, hunger and even poverty can be overcome. Today the world produces more food than at any other time in history. As the late Nelson Mandela astutely stated, “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” “Resilience is providing people with hope and opportunity, giving people the ability to move past the shocks that will come. solution to slowly the impact of climate change. This will only occur if related vestiges of poverty, including hunger, are eliminated. This article is about how you can make a difference.

investing in jobs, education and nutritious food. These are the kinds of things that will make a difference,” stated Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the World Food Programme. As United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated, “Youth are more than victims of poverty and economic downturn – they can be agents of change. We need to do more to create jobs for young people and to support young entrepreneurs so they can create jobs for others.” If all students left school with basic reading skills 171 million people would be lifted out cyclical poverty. An educated adult is more likely to use energy and water more efficiently, choose environmentally conscious companies, rely on local resources, and recycle household waste. It is a partial Page 43 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

food to be healthy. By age three impoverished children have heard 30 million fewer words, they are less likely to have access to health care, are less likely to complete high school and are more likely to be unemployed as adult. More than 12 million American children or 1 out 5 live in households struggling to provide food. Children who eat breakfast have higher attendance, have a 17.5 increase in standardized math scores, and are 20% more likely to graduate from high school, earn more than $10,000 per year, and are less likely to experience hunger as adults, yet in the United States according to teachers 62 percent of children go to school hungry. One in seven American senior citizens struggle with hunger. According to UNICEF, when compared to other countries, America, the supposed global leader, ranks 15th, with a 25.6% poverty rate for children. Two out of three Americans will live in poverty for at least one year at some point in their lives. Today, 10.2 million American seniors – or one in six – may not know from where their next meal will come.

15.2 million seniors in the U.S. are isolated, living alone and 18.4 million seniors have difficulty paying for basic living needs The U.S. senior population is projected to double by 2050 If the world lived like Americans the earth would need to be five times larger. The vast majority of the world’s hungry live in fragile climates prone to climate hazards. Children born during a disaster are more likely to be malnourished.

By 2050 climate change could increase hunger and child malnutrition by 50 percent. A report “Global Food; Waste Not, Want Not” found that between 30% and 50% or 1.2-2 billion tons of food produced around the world never makes it to the table. A 2015 study evidenced that United Kingdom households discarded 7 million tons of food in 2012 - enough to fill London’s Wembley stadium nine times – and generating 7 million tons of CO2 emissions. Food waste has a staggering an annual price tag of $7 trillion dollars. A whopping 70 percent increase in the amount of solid waste generated by urban residents is forecast between now and 2025. Food production needs to increase by at least 60 percent over the next 35 years to provide food security for a projected population of eight billion people. For every dollar invested in nutrition there is a $16.00 return on investment. Even one dollar can make a difference.

Global citizens can and should help end hunger. As Mother Teresa said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”

Global Goals

Page 44 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are the world’s global goals for 2030. SDG 1, ending poverty, and SDG 2, achieving Zero Hunger, are interrelated. The specific goals of Zero Hunger are:

Zero stunted children under 2 years old; 100% access to adequate and healthy food year round; From production to consumption sustainable and climate resilient food systems; 100% increase in smallholder productivity and income in rural areas; Adoption of systems to reduce waste or loss of food; and An end to malnutrition in all its forms.

Closely related is SDG 12, responsible and sustainable consumption and production at all levels. We can all help meet SDG 12’s goals by purchasing recycled products, buying from companies that source recycled products, buying Fair Trade products, eating seasonal and locally grown food, buying food in smaller quantities, recycling, composting, Page 45 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

and always asking before making a purchase, “Do I really need this?”

Share the Meal Achieving Zero Hunger is the focus of The World Food Programme (“WFP”). You can help by:  Downloading the Share the Meal App where for $.50, for less than the price of a Frappuccino at Starbucks, you can provide a hungry child with a meal whenever you are able. It’s this simple:  Writing to your elected leaders enacting local or state legislation requiring the mandatory donation of newly expired food, which can still safely consumed after the expiration date, by grocery stores to local food banks for distribution. These programs, such as Forgotten Harvest in metro Detroit, Michigan, already exist in some communities. Learn more at http://www.forgottenharvest.org/. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

No Kid Hungry One programme successfully operating in the United States is No Kid Hungry which has provided 345 million meals to children. A one dollar donation can provide up to 10 meals. No Kid Hungry is a lean operation. Out of the proceeds raised 69 percent go directly to feeding children, 23 percent accounts for fundraising and a mere 8% goes to management and general costs. No Kid Hungry offers a full range of ways you can get involved, including sponsoring a bake sale, delivering food, and shopping and dining with its business partners. According to Ellie Hollander, President and CEO, Meals on Wheels America, “For millions of seniors, Meals on Wheels is literally the difference between remaining in their own homes and needing to relocate to a nursing facility. The nutritious meal, friendly visit and safety check help them cope with three of the biggest threats of aging: hunger, isolation and loss of independence. And, research proves that when seniors have the right support, they gain greater quality of life, need fewer hospital stays and live longer.” Meals on Wheels programmes in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States serve the elderly and disabled. Meals on Wheels programmes generally operate at the county level or smaller. Programmes vary widely in their size, service provided, organisation, and funding. Most provide one nutritious meal per day to individuals who are:  Primarily homebound;  Unable to easily prepare nutritious meals;  Without consistent daytime assistance from another person;  Able to accept meals during the delivery time frame; and Live in a geographic area serviced by the programme. In the U.S. Meals on Wheels provides seniors with 2.4 million meals annually. Page 47 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Other Meals on Wheels programming includes veterans’ services, home repairs, case management and even respite programs for caregivers. Do an internet search to find out if there’s a programme near you and find how you can get involved. If there’s no programme find out how you can get one started in your community. Information about Meals on Wheels programmes in the United States can be accessed at https:// www.americaletsdolunch.org/faq/.

Conclusion Along with global organisations, like the World Food Programme, there exists many grassroots programmes to stem the tide of hunger and poverty. The choice to participate should be automatic. How you make a difference is your decision. Remember, it does not take money to lend a helping hand to an organization. A brief history... Etymologists trace the origins of the word "chocolate" to the Aztec word "Xocoatl", which refers to the drink brewed from the cacao bean. For about 90% of chocolate's history, it was primarily used as a beverage. As far back as 1400 B.C.E., cacao residue was discovered on pottery excavated in Honduras. It was revealed that the sweet pulp of the cacao fruit, the part that surrounds the bean, was fermented into an alcoholic beverage. Page 52 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Both the Mayans and Aztecs held the belief that the ca cao bean had magical, even divine properties, fit for us in most sacred rituals including birth, marriage and death.

Sweetened chocolate didn't appear on the scene until Europeans discovered the Ameri cas and were served native cuisine. Legend has it that the Aztec King Montezuma welcomed the Spanish explorer Hernando Corte with a special banquet that included drinking chocolate. He was tragically mistaken as a rein carnated deity instead of a conquering invader. Cortez and his conquistadors introduced the cacao beans to Spain. drinking the traditional bitter chocolate brew, but once it was mixed with honey or sugar it became very popular. By the 17th century, chocolate became a fashionable drink throughout Europe. In 1828, a Dutch chemist, Coenraad Johannes van Houten, discovered a way to make powdered chocolate by removing half of the natural cacao butter from the chocolate liquor, then pulverizing what remained and treating it with alkaline salts to reduce bitterness. Hence the name "Dutch cocoa" was born. This soon led to the creation of solid chocolate. You can thank Joseph Fry for all the chocolate candies that you have indulged in over the years. In 1847, he discovered how to make a moldable chocolate paste by adding melted cacao butter back into Dutch cocoa. Shortly after that, a little company called Cadbury began marketing boxes of chocolate candies in England. Milk chocolate hit the scene a few years later, pioneered by David Peter, a Swiss candle maker, with the help of his neighbor, a baby-food manufacturer named Henri Nestle. Chocolate was valued so highly during the Revolutionary War that it was included in soldiers' rations and used in lieu of wages. While the days of chocolate paychecks have long gone, statistics show that the little cacao bean is still a powerful economic force. In the United States alone, chocolate manufacturing is a 4billion-dollar industry. The average American Page 53 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

consumes at least a half a pound of chocolate per month.

Why is chocolate the Precious? Scientists and researchers are discovering the amazing health benefits of chocolate, primarily dark chocolate with a 70-80% cocoa content. A recent study of over 31,000 women was done to track the positive effects that chocolate has on health. It was revealed that women who ate one to two servings of dark chocolate weekly were one-third less likely to be at risk for heart failure. In Germany, another study showed that one square of dark chocolate daily lowered blood pressure and caused a 39 percent reduction in the risk of having a heart attack and stroke, as opposed to those who did not consume dark chocolate regularly. Chocolate stimulates the arterial lining, which causes the body to produce Nitric Oxide (NO), a gas. One function of NO is to send signals to the arteries to relax, which improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure. Chocolate contains compounds called flavanoids, which increase the elasticity in veins and arteries. A study published in Nature Neuroscience (October 26, 2014) found that flavanols in cocoa helps retain memory in humans. Besides flavanols, dark chocolate is loaded with 300+ organic compounds that are biologically active, meaning they interact or have an effect on cell tissue in the human body. These compounds include anti-oxidants such as polyphenols and catechins, amino acids, fatty acids in the form of saturated and monosaturated fat and theobromine. The Latin name for the cacao tree is Theobroma cacao. It is derived from the Greek words for God (Theo) and food (brosi), translated to mean "food of the gods". Theobromine is an alkaloid found in the cocoa fat and gives chocolate its bitter taste. It does not contain bromine at all. It is the most potent, naturally occurring, chemical compound in chocolate. It acts as a relaxant and a stimulant, but is 10 times weaker than caffeine. Despite popular belief, chocolate does not contain caffeine, rather it is the theobromine,

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

which has a structure very similar to caffeine that gives chocolate it's stimulating properties. It also is a diuretic and has an impact on the central nervous system. Studies indicate that theobromine acts on the vagus nerve, which runs from the lungs to the brain. Theobromine crosses the blood-brain barrier and can elevate moods and lift depression. In a fun, fact finding study done by Dr. David Lewis, formerly of the University of Sussex, Dr Lewis states that: "There is no doubt that chocolate beats kissing hands down when it comes to providing a long-lasting body and brain buzz. A buzz that, in many cases, lasted four times as long as the most passionate kiss." Wow! Let's see...chocolate or kissing or both. Hmmm...well you decide what works best for you. Ironically, the theobromine in chocolate is deadly to animals, especially dogs and cats. So keep your beloved pets away from your stash of chocolate! Dark chocolate is nutritious. A 100gram bar (3.5 oz) of dark chocolate containing 70-80% cocoa fat contains: 11 grams of fiber 67% of the RDA for Iron 58% of the RDA for Magnesium 89% of the RDA for Copper 98% of the RDA for Manganese. In addition is contains potassiumphosphorus, zinc and selenium. Keep in mind a 100-gram bar also contains about 600 calories along with moderate amounts of sugar. So eat in moderation! Not all chocolates are created equal! There is a difference between real chocolate and chocolate compounds mainly the source of fat. Real chocolate is derived from the cocoa plant. Chocolate manufacturers are mandated by law to follow a specific recipe or standard in the processing of chocolate. Milk and dark chocolate must contain chocolate liquor or cocoa mass; milk, dark and white chocolate must all contain cocoa butter. The cocoa

gives fine chocolate its sensory qualities, remember it's the fat that contains the theo bromine. In addition, cocoa butter gives chocolate a glossy appearance and snap when you bite into it. This type of chocolate needs to be tempered so that the finished product is stable and doesn't "bloom" or turn white when subjected to different temperatures. Typically fine chocolate will begin to melt at temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenorwww.female-exec.com/s.html coatings, also known as Page 54 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive heit.Chocolate compounds Subscription link

onfectionary coating, are a mixture of sugar, vegetable fat, ocoa powder, lecithin and flavor. Although manufactured imilarly to real chocolate, the main difference is the use of egetable fat vs. cocoa butter. Compounds do not need to be tempered and are more versatile to different temperaures and applications. Common uses are chocolate chips, andies and coatings on ice cream bars. Since there are not as many guidelines regarding ingredients, chocolate ompounds contain added flavors or colors. Page 55may E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Some people may not be able to tell the difference between real chocolate or chocolate compounds. However, to discriminate taste buds, real chocolate is less sweet, decadent and more satisfying, therefore you don't need to eat as much.

Chocolate Economics Some experts have warned for a few years now of an up and coming chocolate crisis, due to supply vs. demand ratios and poor cacao bean production from fungal disease. Chocolate is a huge trade commodity. In America alone, the average consumer takes in approximately 25 pounds of candy per year (including chocolate). Interestingly enough, adults consume more chocolate than children. According to the World Cocoa Foundation, more than 50 million people worldwide depend on chocolate for their livelihood. Unfortunately, cacao cultivation has also caused slavery and exploitation throughout South America and Africa. Human rights organizations claim that up to 90% of cacao cultivation in West Africa is done by slave labor. Two-thirds of cocoa production today comes from West Africa, with Cote d'Ivoire producing 43% of the beans. When purchasing sumers can look for shows the Fair Trade certifies and guarantees were produced without a fair sale price was given

Who's writing this article anyway? My name is Laila S. Nabulsi. I started my journey into the world of chocolate in February of 2006. I never had a hobby or interest in it, but while driving one day, the idea for Masala Chocolates® was born. Sometimes when a flash of inspiration hits us, I believe it is important to look at it and take it seriously. So, I did just that. I had no idea where to start, how to make it, etc., but I did my homework and taught myself how to temper chocolate, make ganaches and other fillings. Drawing from my travels to India and abroad, I started by infusing exotic spices into the chocolates and creating my own recipes. The chocolates are made with mostly organic ingredients, using Fair Trade chocolate. I hired a friend to do some marketing and I was off to a good start. My first Christmas season, I was featured in Daily Candy's weekend edition. Overnight, I had hundreds of orders and it was two weeks before Christmas. I was armed with a few chocolate molds, a pot and a burner. Keep in mind from start to finish, a handmade piece of chocolate takes about 3-4 hours to make. After getting over my initial panic, I went to work, often pulling 48 hours of continuous work to get everything done. I had a dear friend helping me wash dishes and keep me organized. Simultaneously, I was still doing my other job as an acupuncturist and alternative health care practitioner, which I have been doing since 1988. By some miracle, the work was done. I survived and learned many great lessons during that time. Since then, I continue to perfect my skills, create new products, designs and flavors. It is highly satisfying for me to make people happy when they enjoy the finished product. Currently, Masala Chocolates® is an online retailer and can be found at select locations around Orange County and Los Angeles.

Salted Caramel Truffles Fleur de Sel caramels and confections have become a popular treat lately. Begin making these delicious truffles a day ahead of time so the flavors intensify. Ingredients 20 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped, divided 1/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoons water 2/3 cup whipping cream 1/4 teaspoon fleur de sel 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Additional fleur de sel Preparation Place 8 ounces chocolate in metal bowl over saucepan of barely simmering water (do not allow bottom of bowl to touch water); stir until chocolate is smooth. Remove chocolate from over water. Combine sugar and 2 tablespoons water in small saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves, occasionally brushing sides of pan with wet pastry brush. Increase heat; boil until syrup is deep amber color, brushing down sides and swirling pan occasionally, about 4 minutes. Add cream (mixture will bubble). Stir over very low heat until caramel is smooth. Mix caramel and 1/4 teaspoon fleur de sel into melted chocolate. Chill until truffle filling is firm, at least 3 hours. Place cocoa powder in bowl. Using 1 tablespoon truffle filling for each truffle, roll into balls, then roll in cocoa. Arrange on baking sheet. Cover; chill overnight. Line 13x9x2-inch baking sheet with foil. Place remaining 12 ounces chocolate in medium metal bowl over saucepan of barely simmering water (do not allow bottom of bowl to touch water); stir until chocolate is melted and smooth and thermometer inserted into chocolate registers 115°F. Remove bowl from over water. Working quickly, submerge 1 truffle in melted chocolate. Using fork, lift out truffle and tap fork against side of bowl to allow excess coating to drip off. Transfer truffle to prepared sheet. Repeat with remaining truffles. Sprinkle truffles lightly with additional fleur de sel. Let stand until coating sets, at least 1 hour. Chill until ready to eat.

You can always hire someone to do what you hate to do or don’t do well. 6) NURTURE YOUR MIDAS TOUCH Profitability and wealth creation are integral to business growth. For most leaders, financial success is a tangible reward for all that they put into their businesses and professional lives. Earn it and enjoy it. 7) YOUR TIME AND ENERGY ARE VALUABLE RESOURCES Your time and energy are resources to you, your business, your family and your friends. You are as scarce and valuable as any other resources in the business, and in your personal life, you are irreplaceable. Learn to set priorities to determine what and how much you will say “yes” at the right times -- and saying no at the right times, too. Page 78 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The New Year is a time of reflection and renewal. What better time to set goals and the tone for the rest of the year? First you must evaluate everything you’ve been told about leadership. Release all of your subconscious beliefs. Prepare to chart a new course based on your natural abilities and unique gifts.

In general, women possess greater emotional intelligence, empathy and ability to nurture. All of these attributes facilitate relationship development, trust and collaboration.

I’m often asked about the lack of balanced diversity and wage gaps in senior level management roles, in high-level government positions and on boards. I even wrote a lengthy paper on the glass ceiling for my MBA. Early in my career, I subscribed to this invisible barrier as something society imposed. I’ve since been awakened to so much more. What we manifest into our personal lives is based on our thoughts, feelings, subconscious beliefs, our spoken words and, yes, even our own energy. In my book, Ascension, I discuss the various aspects of the subtle energy system and its role in our lives. In order to shatter my own glass ceiling, I had my own journey to awakening and Page 84 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

conscious leadership. The first step to freedom was to release many of my beliefs. I learned the invaluable lesson of embracing my innate gifts, such as my intuitive and clairvoyant abilities, and viewing them as a blessing. I experienced the ultimate journey to self -love, self-acceptance and to understanding the role that my subtle energy system plays in manifesting my physical world. collaboration. During my time in Corporate America, my experiences with senior ranking male influences were pretty much the same. They attempted to groom me and coach me to be robotic. They viewed their work as a game and people were expendable. I was penalized when I didn’t conform to their beliefs. One personal example includes a story with a Senior Vice President (VP) who punished me for choosing not to put him on a pedestal, for refusing to become his protégé or to bury other executives. He used a variety of manipulative tactics (including gaslightingcollaboration. During my time in Corporate Page 85 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

America, my experiences with senior ranking male influences were pretty much the same. He used a variety of manipulative tactics (including gaslighting and triangulation) in his attempt to persuade me. He wrote me up for trivial items to demonstrate his power over me. One example was with regards to removing my suit jacket in a client meeting with a temperature nearing 90 degrees with no air conditioning. At that moment a professional, sleeveless dress shirt certainly felt more appropriate then a suit with armpit sweat stains. The client’s executive team was even dressed in business casual attire. The Senior VP said that my shapely arms attracted too much attention from the men. Seriously?? At the next meeting he made the decision to join us simply to torture me. Sitting beside me, he smiled mischievously when he Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

witnessed a pause in my consideration to remove my suit jacket again. His library of divisive tactics became the trigger for me to walk away from it all. He wasn’t the first man of his nature I had worked for and I knew he wouldn’t be the last unless I changed something. I was done thinking that I could positively influence such a dark “leadership” team. It was time to manifest a new life.

The most effective leaders are those who become the voice of inspiration, clearing space for others to evolve into the best possible versions of themselves.

Embrace your unique talents. Be proud of your feminine traits. Be weird and quirky, because that ‘s what makes you, you. Shed any belief system that you are inferior to anyone else and that women need to compete with one another in order to have a seat at the table. I believe abundance can be achieved for all when we tap into our unique talents, no matter what vessel your soul resides within.

LEADERSHIP DEFINED In order to discuss conscious leadership, it’s important to first define the essence of leadership. It is often confused with achieving a position or title. Leadership may exist at all levels of an organization, within our social circles and our communities. It is about possessing the ability to positively influence outcomes through Page 86 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

our actions, not from a position of authority. It’s about being visionary and solutions-oriented. Conscious leadership, however, incorporates self-awareness and seeking to understand those you lead. It’s about looking at the way you do business differently, in a way that serves others and is based in integrity. Trust is required to effectively lead and influence. Are you prepared for the journey to conscious leadership? You must understand your role in setting the cultural tone within any group or organization. Below are several key tenets to guide you through this priceless experience of Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

LEAD FROM THE HEART Be approachable, ethical and compassionate. Empower others to present their authentic selves. Gain insight into their innate talents and personal goals. Learn how allowing your team to fuel their personal passions contributes to synergistic collaboration.

EMBRACE CHANGE & TAKE RISKS

self-discovery.

BE AUTHENTIC From the time you are born, you are told what to think, how to act and what you should do in life. In order to lead from a place of true authenticity, first you have to be fully self-aware of your strengths, as well as of your shadow self. The shadow self is comprised of the hurt, pain and secrets that we bury from others. In my book Ascension, I discuss the impact of releasing the shadow self and our subconscious belief system to every facet of our life. Page 87 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Are you looking for different outcomes in your professional or personal life? Change begins from within. Energy Leadership is about how your vibrational energy, choices and actions influence the collective manifestation within you’re your professional and personal social circles. The most effective leaders are those who become the voice of inspiration, clearing space for others to evolve into the best possible versions of themselves. Broadening one’s comfort zone while taking risks is one of the most important parts of our amazing journey. If I would not have walked away from the only career I knew, I would have stalled the launch of my own business. I certainly wouldn’t have embarked on my global travels to more than 30 countries. Nor would I have completed marathons (26.2 mile races) on all seven continents, including running in the Kenyan bush with safari wildlife and on King George Island, Antarctica. Wherever I travel I set out to experience at least one new Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

adventure, such as when I skydived from an altitude of 16,500 feet in New Zealand!

BUILDING TEAMS The success of your organization directly correlates to your people. Select new hires and candidates for promotion wisely rather than rushing to fill a role. Avoid hiring versions of yourself or yespeople. If you think simply hiring minorities results in a diverse workforce, think again. Make a concerted effort to look beyond the diversity of our physical vessel – consider life experiences, education, ability to collaborate, one’s approach to problem solving, and even one’s unique talents. Actively consider talent from new venues or referral pipelines.

Always choose a high high--vibrational, curious curious--minded individual with strong character over a toxic or egoistic applicant.

HIGH VIBRATIONAL TEAMS Most importantly, focus on building teams with good vibes. Learn more about how your energy or your organization’s energy impacts the type of talent (and clientele) you attract. Always choose a high-vibrational, curious-minded individual with strong character over a toxic or egoistic applicant. Low-vibrating apples energetically spoil the entire apple barrel.

GET OUT OF THE WAY Once you make your team selections,

train, empower and then get out of the way. Although you will continue to lead and mentor, remember that you are still a student of life. Learn from those who surround you, as well.

LET GO It’s time to let go of all that no longer serves purpose in your life. Self-confidence and faith in your abilities are very important to success. Ego actually exists to separate people, to create the mindset of competition and scarcity. It’s time to ditch the ego and curb a defensive mindset. Be receptive to the information that universe has to share with you.

when you are on the right path. Failure is only terminal when change and growth is resisted. Conscious leaders embrace each lesson and see opportunity. They inspire others to keep moving forward and to believe in what can be achieved individually and collectively.

PERSONAL GROWTH AND EXPRESSION Inspire others to follow their own path to self-discovery and authenticity as you lead by example. We are all a work-in-progress. If you are still alive, you still have lessons to learn in this lifetime.

PRACTICE HUMILITY

Strive for excellence, rather than perfection, otherwise you will fail 100% of the time. Release people, products and processes that are burdensome or drag your people (and organization) down. Choose to be nimble and light so you can move forward quickly.

VISION AND OPTIMISM Share your vision in a way that inspires, creates contagious optimism and builds commitment. Everyone has experienced failure. It’s nothing more than the universe showing us there’s a better path to take or some lesson to learn. Doors easily open Page 89 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Show respect and integrity to everyone you meet. Titles exist to define organizational responsibilities, not human worth. When employees feel respected and appreciated, productivity, loyalty and workplace engagement all increase.

TIME INVESTMENT Time is the most precious commodity. Deepen your human connection with others by being totally present in the moment and enjoying a technology timeout. Learn ways to increase energetic efficiency and techniques for slowing down your day.

MIND, BODY & SPIRIT BALANCE No matter what level you are at within an organization, it is important to set Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

boundaries with your time and how other employees or clients interact with you. Although making yourself accessible is important, prioritizing your personal needs is as important. This includes spending quality time with loved ones without checking email or texts. It should also include “me-time” where you invest in yourself by way of exercise, yoga, meditation, reading, etc. Discover how striving for life balance is important to channeling creative energy, deepening relationships, and innovating new products or services. If any leg of this three-legged table is missing, it becomes wobbly and eventually collapses. Provide venues where employees not only learn about holistic health, but gift them time to achieve balance. Evaluate your vacation and flexible work schedule policies, as well as wellness programs. There are companies who offer meditation or yoga on site. And some even require that employees use their vacation time fully unplugged from all work and technology.

PLAY AND LAUGHTER Every leader should understand the importance of play and laughter. Laughter is high vibrational energy that facilitates Page 90 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

interpersonal bonding, that releases stressreducing endorphins and that allows us to channel creative energy. Ask yourself, where do you find you receive your best flashes of intuition or ideas for innovative disruption?

EXPRESS GRATITUDE Say thanks for the small things and celebrate team successes with the entire team. Expressing gratitude is also high vibrational and facilitates interpersonal bonding. And for those of you familiar with karma or the Law of Attraction, then you already know that what you give, you get. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

INVEST IN YOURSELF Are you ready to move your life or business forward or the next level? Have you decided where you fall on the spectrum of conscious leadership? Have you started to evaluate opportunities for personal growth? Everyone should have a coach or confidant. The Most Common Cancer In the U.S.

Cancer can develop in any part of the body – tissue, bone, blood, etc. But which part of the body is the most prone? For a long time, it was the lungs. But here is what cancer.gov says about the latest numbers: “The most common type of cancer… is breast cancer, with more than 249,000 new cases expected in the United States in 2016. The next most common cancers are lung cancer and prostate cancer.” I had breast cancer. It is the reason why I became a health and lifestyle coach. Now I help people avoid the indescribable suffering that I experienced. Knowing what I know now, I realize that decades of my corporate life in the fast lane, that imbalanced lifestyle, certainly did not help. This is why I am determined to reach out to the busy professionals – because I know that life so well. I am writing this article to share some hope concerning breast cancer, correct information that clears any confusion, and some recommendations. Fear comes from lack of understanding and the unknown. Honesty about breast cancer will help your fear dissipate. Page 96 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Breast cancer has many faces. Here are the notable ones. 1. The Curable Disease. Let’s start with this one. Cancer is curable, treatable, and manageable. Cancer is a representation of compromised immune system. In other words, it is impossible to have cancer when you have a healthy immune system. Strengthen your immune system, and you will be able to avoid all cancers. It is the prevention and cure for cancer. So what strengthens your immune system? Life-work balance, stress management, restful sleep, nutrition, and any Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

proper self-care for you as a whole person. I help and guide busy professionals with these factors. Even if you are not declared “cancer-free,” it is possible to keep the cancerous condition under control. Think of it as a chronic condition, such as diabetes and back pain. It is manageable with the above mentioned factors. Keep this in mind as you read the rest of this list. 2. The Deadly Disease. You see why I just made the last statement. Although the term “deadly disease” is not appreciated, this is Page 97 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

the only way breast cancer (any cancer!) was perceived for a long time. When Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act in 1971, it was accepted as the beginning of War on Cancer. Back then, cancer was pretty much a death sentence. Nobody survived it. Not much was known about the disease. No accurate methods to test them, no effective ways to treat them, and of course no preventive measures. As for breast cancer specifically, women began surviving the disease only about 30 years ago. Medicine has made great progress, and many former breast cancer patients live to tell their stories – of which I am one. But unfortunately, there are those who have more cancers than one – either metastatic (spread from the original location to other organs) or different types (carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma, etc.). Multiple cancer diagnoses are possible because: 1) the body’s conditions have not changed, and 2) because the cancer treatments themselves are cancer risks. Anyone who agrees to receive oncology treatments with pharmaceuticals is given a long list of possible side effects. And trust me, there are many. These Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

are enormously strong drugs! One of the “rare but serious” side effects is cancer. Yes, the cancer treatments (drugs and radiation) can cause more cancer. This fact is not often shared. People don’t talk about it as much as they should. Doctors do warn about the possible death, but most believe it is the only option they have. I was one of them. Some tend to think that their decision is actually on choosing the timing. Dying in 3 months or dying in 3 years. But this is not about dying – cancer is curable! The deadly disease is not always deadly. Many do survive, and that’s a great thing. However, the percentage of survival is not much different than 30 years ago. We only see more breast cancer survivors because there are more diagnoses to begin with. General belief that cancer is curable will improve the survival rate. We are not there yet as a society. Mind is powerful! Believe that cancer is curable and do not lose hope. This belief will help you beat the odds, throw the statistics out the window, and fully live your cancer-free life. I officially graduated from my cancer support group 4 years ago. There were 11 of us in the group, and 9 have died of breast cancer or its complications. I am one of the two still living. Even with the strong will to beat the disease, challenges remain. This is why I’m determined to share my message. Page 98 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

3. The New Mutation. Cancer cell is a mutation from healthy normal cells. We are all susceptible to this cancerous mutation. When someone learns that I had breast cancer, more often than not, I get the question, “Was it in your family history?” No, it wasn’t. Only about 25% of all breast cancer cases are genetic. I am in the newmutation majority. Checking back to The Curable Disease idea, I must mention that cell mutations are mostly preventable. Healthy immune system keeps the healthy cells to perform proper replication of the cells, so that there is no reason for mutation to occur. Keep this in mind as you read the next two items on this list. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

4. The Men’s Cancer. Although most men tend to think that they’re safe from any breast cancer diagnosis, it will be prudent for them to pay attention to the recent development in the breast cancer scene. Male breast cancer cases have been on the rise for the last 40 years. Anyone who has breast tissues is susceptible to breast cancer, and that’s everyone. Females and males. This is one of the reasons why there are more breast cancer diagnoses now – although small in number, men are helping to raise the ranking. Healthy immune system will help keep men out of breast cancer statistics. 5. The Teenage Girls’ Cancer. A year ago, eight-year-old Chrisy Turner became one of Page 99 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

the youngest patients ever diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy. Both her parents have had cancer, and they are happy to have her well and recovered now. Breast cancer in such a young person is extremely rare, and hopefully there will not be another. Breast cancer in teenage girls used to be shockingly rare as well, but not anymore. It does happen, unfortunately. I was 43 at the time of my diagnosis, and I was sent to multiple genetic testing due to my “very young age,” as they told me. Well, “young” is a relative term now, isn’t it. Breast cancer is obviously not just in older women anymore. Though small in number, teenage girls are experiencing the most common cancer in the United States. Healthy immune system will help keep teenage girls out of breast cancer statistics.

Recommendations to Help Avoid Breast Cancer Let me reiterate the great news: we have the cure for cancer! It’s called your healthy immune system. It is also the prevention and the treatment for cancer. Even greater news is that it is in your control. There are lots of things you can do to strengthen your immune system and decrease your risk of cancer. “How to Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk” is one of my signature talks as a professional speaker. Because of the high demand and tremendous interest in this topic, I’ve decided to record my talk and make it available for everyone around the globe. In 6-part video series “How to Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk” I share 3 powerful strategies to help you reduce the risk of this most common cancer in the United States. Get your copy here.

There are many activities a person can do to keep in shape. However, running for your life is a sure way to keep fit. On Saturday, October 29, 2016 that is exactly what I found myself doing at the Guardian Centers of Georgia in Perry. Every year in October there is an event held here known simply as the ZOMBIE RUN where participants are put to the test over 3.6 miles of rugged terrain filled with intense obstacles and overrun by the living dead. Each runner receives a belt and three red flags to attach on. The goal is to make it to the finish line with at least one red flag still attached. Those who do receive a medal with the words zombie run survivor inscribed on it. Now don’t think that the others leave empty handed. They receive a participation medal for completing the course.

Zombie Run launched its first event in 2012 and has grown in popularity with each passing year drawing in thousands of participants to every run. The world of social media explodes with countless pictures and videos from those brave enough to challenge the course. As an avid adventurer,

I found myself both excited and slightly overwhelmed standing in the middle of a massive crowd at the start line. There were so many people participating that we were divided into “waves” after checking in with registration and signing waivers. From where we were standing I could see partially collapsed buildings with smoke rising from the ashes and wrecked cars along the path. As my wave walked closer to the start line I kept myself busy watching other people in the crowds. The announcer held a quick

window into a building where a blood eyed zombie in a wheelchair is waiting for me. The door to the outside is visible but is well guarded by hungry zombies just itching to grab my red flags. Once outside the chase is on as I run through a danger zone to the highway of abandoned vehicles. Already one flag down I move carefully trying to conserve energy and avoid the undead as they emerge from behind and even inside the cars. A bride and groom zombie pair catch my attention as I make my way through the path. A fellow runner is being ganged up on by three zombies in a school bus. I keep running until I see an arrow directing me off the road and into a beautiful pecan orchard. By this point the heat is beating down on everyone and runners and zombies alike are grateful for the event officials who show up with water.

costume contest to fill the time. People laughed and cheered as several of the runners in costume posed for attention. A few more minutes passed and at last it was time for my wave to enter the course. There was a count down from ten and a shout to run for our lives and we were off into the unknown. I must make a point of saying that it is NOT easy trying to run a zombie course and take pictures at the same time. The first obstacle involves climbing through a Page 105 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The shade from the pecan orchard offered some much-needed relief from the sun and a few of the runners even cracked open a few pecans for a quick snack. It was here that I had my first encounter with fast zombies. No longer was I faced with just plain walkers like on TV’s hit series The Walking Dead. These monsters emerged from behind trees like the creatures from horror films such as 28 Days Later. By the time I made it to the next part of the course I was Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Upon seeing the finish line I nearly burst into tears. I had done it! This thick chick had pushed through until the end! As I entered the last mile of the run I knew I had done some damage of my own. My arms were covered in scrapes, cuts, dirt and even a little blood. My right shoulder was throbbing from the last slide down the final hill. I was beginning to feel like I had strained every muscle in my body. However, I had not come this far only to quit so close to the end. Pushing on I made it past the flooded homes, the gallows, the burning cars and around the village of zombie smurfs. No, I am not kidding. There was Papa Smurf and the whole gang. Upon seeing the finish line I nearly burst into tears. I had done it! This thick chick had pushed through until the end. And guess what!!! I looked down and hanging on my belt was a single red flag. Not only had I completed the course but I made it through uninfected. As I lowered my head to receive Page 106 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

my medal I felt a strong sense of pride…..pride and pain! LOL The Zombie Run is an amazing event and I strongly encourage everyone to give it a try. People of all ages, sizes, and athletic abilities show up to participate. It is a great way to experience something new, meet interesting people and help bring money to the economy. In fact, there were so many people participating that all the local hotels booked up. This was truly an amazing experience and I would like to thank everyone – the creators, makeup artists, volunteers, zombie actors, the Perry police department for their assistance, the bus drivers for getting us to and from the Guardian site and all the runners. Tenuta Belvedere is a winery owned and managed by Federica and Gianluca Cabrini in Montecalvo, which is situated in the Oltrepò Pavese area in Lombardy. It is a (wine) area situated south of Pavia, so to say ’on the other side of the Pò river’, in the south of Lombardy. I first encountered Tenuta Belvedere and Gianluca through his uncle, Giuseppe Cantoni, and his sons, (Gianluca’s cousins) Matteo and Nicola Cantoni, when I visited Fattoria di Fibbiano earlier this spring. It was in this way that I got curious and decided to contact Gianluca in order to find out more about his production of natural wines in Oltrepò Pavese.

In early October, Federica and Gianluca were guests at my #WinesOfItaly #LiveStream talking about their wine area and their wine production. When I then went to the wine event Autochtona in Bolzano in end-October 2016, I met with them in person, finally, as they were participating with their wines at the event. The Pinot Noir has its own remarkable character and place in this historical wine area; it is used for the production of the Oltrepò Pavese Charmat and Metodo Classico wines. Pinot Noir can, however, also be vinified as a white wine, which is done by Federica and Gianluca at Tenuta Belvedere with the Pinot Nero IGT Provincia di Pavia. It can also be used for the production of red wines. Riesling, the so-called Italian Riesling, is another very important grape variety for winemaking in the Oltrepò Pavese area. When it comes to the Bonarda, it is a wine that can create a bit of confusion as it in Piemonte (bonarda piemontese) it is a grape variety, while it here in the Oltrepò Pavese area it refers to the DOC Bonarda. The DOC Bonarda is produced with the grape varieties Croatina, Barbera, Uva rara, and Vespolina.

Tenuta Belvedere, an innovative winery area contains 1 DOCG, 7 DOC, and 1 IGT denominations where the DOCG Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico (made with the Champenoise method) and the DOC Bonarda dell’Oltrepò Pavese are perhaps the most well known. However, there are other just as important DOC denominations such as Buttafuoco dell’Oltrepò Pavese, Casteggio Oltrepò Pavese, Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero dell’Oltrepò Pavese, and Sangue di Giuda dell’Oltrepò Pavese. Page 113 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Tenuta Belvedere dates back to the late 19th century, but it was only in the postWW II period that the production became more focused and quality oriented with the Federica’s grandfather. It has always been a family run winery and continues to be so also today with Gianluca having taken over the reins together with Federica. Federica and Gianluca are two very positive and dynamic people who are not afraid to try new things and then ’adjust’ as they go. started from ground zero a few years ago. One of their main goals is to try to mix new technology with traditional methods. They are, furthermore, striving to work more in line with Mother Nature and aiming for as low an environmental impact as possible. It is an organic winery and they only use organic fertilizers and substances for the treatment of the vines. They take it one step further, and do not add any sulfites in the red wines and try to limit the use of sulfites to a minimum in the white and sparkling wines. As a way of showing their environmental responsibility even further, they are also a member of both FIVI (Italian federation of independent vignerons) and Vin Natur (Association of natural vine growers). If we know talk a bit about the soil, the winery is situated in the Montecalvo Page 114 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

district which is in the center of the Oltrepò Pavese area where they cultivate mainly Pinot Noir. The soil is typically calcareous and of clay with marine origin. The temperature variation between night and day further provides good climatic conditions for the production of Pinot Noir in this area. Their smaller Riesling vineyards, on the other hand, are on mining terrain and there the soil is limestone with a layer of chalk. This gives a good level of minerality to the Riesling wines.

The Wines Federica and Gianluca produce the five wines m’Ami Spumante Extra Brut, Riesling DOC dell’Oltrepò Pavese, Pinot Nero IGT Provincia di Pavia, Bonarda DOC dell’Oltrepò Pavese, and Coccìnea Croatina provincia di Pavia IGT. They are, however, also working on developing two other Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

wines, namely the Montecalvus (100% Pinot Noir) and Wai (70% Pinot Noir and 30% Italian Riesling). Wai is a non-filtered wine, which has gone through a refermentation in the bottle. This is a very interesting wine with a strong character where you feel the presence of the Pinot Noir vinified as a white wine. These two wines, I believe, clearly expresses the terroir and the so -called ‘personal brand’ that Tenuta Belvedere slowly is trying to create and develop. We now return to the m’Ami Spumante Extra Brut; a 100% Pinot Noir, which is produced with the best, or most elegant, part of the must. It is produced with the Charmat method, which means that the second fermentation is made in autoclave. This is a well-balanced sparkling wine with both floral and fruity notes as well as a mineral touch. The Riesling DOC dell’Oltrepò Pavese is a 100% Riesling. I tasted the 2014 vintage of this wine and it has a nice minerality while at the palate you feel the fruity character. The Pinot Nero IGT Provincia di Pavia is a 100% Pinot Nero vinified as a white wine which means that the must does not get in contact with the grape skins. When I tried this wine, I paired it mainly with a starter dish of speck and other cold cut delicacies from Alto Adige. Its minerality and freshness worked well with the quite heavy food. The red wines Bonarda DOC dell’Oltrepò Pavese and Coccìnea Croatina provincia di Pavia IGT are both wines with a distinctly fruity character. There is a difference in grape Page 115 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

varieties and in tannin levels between the two wines, as Coccìnea has more pronounced tannins than the Bonarda. The Bonarda is a blend of 90% Croatina, 5% Uva rara, and 5% Barbera, while Coccìnea is a 100% Croatina wine. Still, the Croatina is the dominant grape variety in both wines. The Coccìnea is, furthermore, a still red wine while the Bonarda is fizzy. The Bonarda undergoes the first fermentation in cement tanks while the second fermentation to become a sparkling wine is made in inox tanks. Federica told me that her grandfather used to do the second fermentation of the Bonarda in the bottle and that they want to return to trying out this traditional method very soon. wine events and wine fairs all around Italy this year in order to launch their winery. Therefore, I am sure that it is only a matter of time before they will enter also a more international market. Their wines are indeed in a niche of their own, and in line with the principles of natural wines.

My Wine Story

Visit to Tenuta Belvedere When you are in the northern parts of Italy, call Tenuta Belvedere and book a visit. The Oltrepò Pavese area in southern Lombardy is not as touristy as other regions in Italy, however, it is a very interesting area with their production of indigenous wines with a character all their own. The closeness to Pavia and to Milan in Lombardy also makes it fairly easy to go to the winery for a visit. Federica and Gianluca are not exporting their wines yet, as they have been starting to market their wines only this year. In fact, they told me that they have been attending a lot of Page 116 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translatorSubscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

dominated audience together with a couple of translator colleagues, changing the course name to Words at the Winery. The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. In the autumn of 2014, we organized another Words at the Winery seminar at the winery Feudi di San Gregorio, near Avellino. During last year, I held smaller informal minicourses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fellow sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firenze. At the moment, I am working on putting together a new seminar on wine terminology in English for translators and people in the wine and tourism sector. Set aside the mold is ready to fill with the Cheesecake batter.

Ingredients for Pumpkin Flavor:   

In a thick-bottomed Teflon saucepot cook the above ingredients over medium high heat for 15 minutes, stirring often. (Reduce heat if browning starts in the first 5 minutes). After all steam has subsided and pumpkin paste is cooked down, add the Liquor and cook for 3 minutes. Cool and set aside.

Method for Cheesecake: Using a large mixing bowl with a paddle, soften the cream cheese. Approx. 3 minutes at ¾ speed until softened, scrap down sides and mix well for 1 more minute (this will eliminate any chunks or clumps). Set aside at room temperature.  In a separate bowl mix sugar, vanilla, cream, orange zest and cold, cooked pumpkin mix. have completely softened cream cheese before you start the process to prevent clumps from forming). When you have blended all ingredients together, mix with a spoon as to evenly disperse the ingredients all together as one batter mix. Pre-heat oven to 275 degrees. Using a 3” deep by 12” square (or round) ovenproof container create a Bain Maire by filling it ½ way with warm water. To prevent over browning the crust in the long cooking process you will need to wrap the spring mold with a wellmoistened towel. Do it evenly around the entire mold. Then wrap the wet towel with tin foil to hold it in place. Press down on the foil to firmly set in place. Pour the cheesecake batter mix into the Cracker packed foil and towel wrapped spring mold. Place in the water bath and cook at 275-degree pre heated oven. Fill the water bath up using a cup, as high as possible AFTER you place it in the oven. Cook at 275 for 15 minutes. Slide the cheesecake out on the baking rack, and decorate the top using the Hershey’s syrup in the squeeze bottle. Create a spider web design (SEE demo in class). Continue to cook at 280 degrees for 2 ½ hours or until stick pulls out clean. The cake should dome on top and have two to three cracks on top if it is cooked properly.

One very important note:

Do not open oven to check or move the cake after you decorated it in the first 15minutes. Let it be, do not touch it. Look through the window to check it if you want to see it. If you do not

follow this process, it could result in a flat, under-cooked cheesecake. 

    

Check it after two and one half hours have passed. Do not use a convection oven as this will burn the cake before it is done. When the cake is finished, remove it from the water bath, but leave the towels and foil wrapped around it. Let cool to room temp before unwrapping the towels and foil. Place in the refrigerator in the mold for 4 hours before opening the spring mold. This will ensure that the cake has set up. Unwrap mold and remove. Cut and serve with maple whipped cream.

Maple Whip Cream: 1 ¼ c.Heavy Whipping Cream ½ c.Pure Maple Syrup, cooked to one-quarter cup 1/8 c. Sugar 1tsp. Vanilla extract ½ tsp Maple Extract, if available

As we welcome the New Year, I’d like to start with an invitation for you to “Write Your Book This Year.” You know the one. The one that you have been thinking about forever--or as New York Times Bestselling Author, Joseph Finder says, “Just Write the Damned Book Already.” He even has a sign hanging in his office that reads, “JUST WRITE IT.” He goes on to share that it’s a reminder to himself not to let that annoying critical voice inside him — the one that says, “Oh, man, you can do so much better than that!” — win.

Stop talking about it and just sit down and write it. You wouldn’t believe how many people I meet at event after event who tell me they have a great idea for a book… if only they had time

to write it! Let’s face it, we all have excuses and circumstances that get in our way. However, have you ever stopped to ask yourself what is important to you and your business? If the commitment is important enough to you, you will make the time. If you are thinking, “I can’t write. What should I write about? Who’d want to read anything I’ve written?” — Please keep reading. Page 132 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Becoming an author of a published book, considers you an expert, provides you with massive credibility, and celebrity. If you write a book related to your profession, the book is a way to generate new business by serving as a calling card for potential clients. The bottom line is you are viewed as an expert in your industry. In Bird By Bird, Anne Lamott genuinely apologizes for not having a secret formula to help her writing students get started, however, she offers support to all writers in this way: “The good news is that some days it feels like you just have to keep getting Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Step 1: Determine Your Goal and Define Your Concept Think about how your book best serves your readers, which in the end, best serves you. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get you started. Are you writing a book for fun? To promote your business? To build your credibility? For now, don’t make your goal relative to earning millions of dollars. See this first book as a marketing project and a way for you to transform yourself and your business while delivering to your clients the education and information that they need to improve themselves and their businesses. The main point is for you to produce a professional, wellwritten book.

and ITE IT. out of your own way so that whatever wants to be written can use you to write it … the bad news is that if you’re at all like me, you’ll probably read over what you’ve written and spend the rest of the day obsessing, and praying that you do not die before you can completely rewrite or destroy what you have written…” Instead of continuing to stand on my soapbox, I am offering you the best recommendations I have for getting your book written this year. Keeping sight of your goal allows you to establish your overall concept for your book. If you’re writing non-fiction, think about exactly what you’re attempting to communicate or impart with your book. Rather than covering a broad overview, go deep with your concept. Delving deep allows you to share much more information with your reader, and gives you the opportunity to write additional books related to your overall concept. If you are writing fiction, weave your story and characters around a narrative that you know something about, or are passionate about. If you’re a history buff, you may want to write historical fiction set in a timeperiod that interests you. Doing so can give you a basis for various ideas that you may use for a potential novel(s). Step 2: Do a Mind/ Data Dump For a non-fiction, once you have your overall concept established, begin writing a list of all the ideas, key concepts, topics, and subtopics you want to share in your book. In one sitting, just make a list without priorities, organization, or groupings of ideas; just one idea after the other. If you repeat yourself, that’s fine just keep going, until your list is complete. Over the next few days keep adding to the list - do not read or review the list, just keep adding to it. Once the list is complete, organize it by grouping like ideas, topics, or sub-topics together. Now, organize each group separately, and give each group a distinct label. This list will ultimately create the chapters and/or sections of your book. Now, think about the end of the book first. What do you want your readers to walk away with? Once you have a general idea of your ending, formulate a sequence for the groupings you have just created, with the end in mind. At this point, you may want to support or enhance your material with notes for stories, quotes, or examples. . You may have another outlining style that works well for you; however, I find that this process is a quick and easy way to get your Page 134 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

ideas on paper as you first get started. When outlining a fiction book, it is a little bit different because you’re developing a narrative/story. Make a point to devote some time to brainstorming and taking notes, allowing your imagination to create a story in your mind. Creating an outline allows you to decide on your characters and the roles that they play. Once you have an idea of the main characters, you can build a framework for the story. An alternative option is to write a brief summary of the story, and then determine how to break down the story into chapters; bear in mind, you need to Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

For a non non--fiction, once you have your overall concept established, begin writing a list of all the ideas, key concepts, topics, and sub sub--topics you want to share in your book. determine how you want the story to end.

Step 3: Determine Your Writing Process When I work with my clients writing their books, I have them use Word for PC users and Pages for Mac users or whichever word processing software you choose, make sure you use something that allows you to easily make revisions without wasting time. Eventually, you need to send your manuscript for editing. It is much faster and less expensive if you send it in a format your editor can easily read and edit. If you are one of those people who really enjoys writing in longhand because it Page 135 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

inspires creativity, just know that you will have to go back and type it on your computer, unless you hire a transcriptionist. The way I look at it is that you might as well start typing. You may even prefer speaking your book content and having it transcribed, which is my preference. As a side note, this is how I wrote my doctoral dissertation and it worked like a dream. I finished my dissertation in five weekends - not five weeks, five weekends!

Step 4: Set Up a Writing Schedule with Goals

As I mentioned before, I wrote my 100plus page doctoral dissertation in five weekends because I didn’t have time during the week. I believe this is the most important part of writing your book because you can’t write only when you feel inspired or motivated. You must form a writing habit, whether it is daily or five days a week or just the weekend schedule as I did. In an ideal world, it’s best if you can write at the same time every day. I wrote all day Saturday and Sunday, taking regular breaks for meals and snacks, hiking, and some casual, fun hanging out time. Some authors commit to a number of words produced at each sitting; in my case, I committed to a certain number of pages per sitting. Commit to a specific start time for each sitting. I started after breakfast, and worked until lunchtime (whatever time that was on the clock). I picked up immediately after lunch, and wrote until it was hiking time. Then, I took time for I established Subscription linkdinner. www.female-exec.com/s.html

Interview Questions Recently, I had a wonderful conversation with Cortney McDermott. Cortney, a graduate of the London School of Economics, has served as an executive at Vanity Fair Corporation, as Vice President at Sustainability Partners, as a Professor of graduate studies for Big Ten U.S. universities, and as a Global Associate for the beCause consortium.

you can’t solve a problem by focusing on the problem.

Now, a successful serial entrepreneur living in Italy with her husband and daughter, Cortney advises Fortune 500 executives and entrepreneurial leaders on compelling communications, sustainable innovation, and business-life strategy. Cortney, Good morning. It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to sit down with you. Cynthia: One of the dominant themes a professional woman is often forced to confront is the conflict between being a professional and being a mother, which often causes guilt and self-judgement. As the mother of a beautiful daughter, Gaia, who just turned 7 this year, how have you dealt with the question of how to be an effective, committed professional and still be a phenomenal mother? Page 140 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Cortney: About 5 years ago, my daughter was jumping in and out of my carry-on, as I was busy packing for a business trip to Brussels. When that failed to get Mama’s attention, she grabbed my Blackberry. In less than a minute, she managed to lock it. I freaked. Trip details, contacts, my entire professional life — all locked in that phone. Many frantic and failed attempts at access later, I arrived at the airport. It wasn’t until the plane was taking off that I realized how ridiculous the whole situation was: Here I was leaving for 4 days and I was worried about my emails, not about Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

SIMPLE · SUSTAIN · ABILITY, Create What You Want is partly about that journey. Cynthia: What were the implications you considered when making this life changing decision? Cortney: When I was sitting on that jet plane, I considered whether a decision that big would work -- whether savings would hold out while I was figuring this whole thing out, whether I’d have what it takes, whether my family would support me. Luckily, I chose to ignore those fears and lead from my heart. Cynthia: What direction did your career take after leaving Vanity Fair?

how much I’d miss my daughter. Cynthia: Cortney, did this impact your decision to leave such a prestigious position at Vanity Fair? Cortney: My desire to be fully present with my daughter was the main catalyst, for sure. But there were other factors at play, as well. When I left Vanity Fair Corporation, the idea was to do the work I love AND have plenty of time left over to play with family and friends. I also wanted to figure out how to take better care of myself--more time-outs, more sleep, more self-reflection. Page 141 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The idea was to start my own business. But before I could get there, Sustainability Partners Inc.--best-selling sustainability authors with clients like Nike, Starbucks, The US Military, and NASA-recruited me as their Vice President. They’d have an international exec and I could work from home. Win. Win. We were at the leading edge in our field, and I was back solving the sustainability riddle when I realized: We were all missing the point. Why? Because you can’t solve a problem by focusing on the problem. Cynthia: That’s an awfully powerful statement. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Even worse, we didn’t notice or talk about the fact that our own lives were unsustainable -- that we weren’t seeing our kids enough or taking the time-outs we needed or getting quiet enough to figure out what we really wanted. … And that’s when I decided to create SIMPLE · SUSTAIN · ABILITY -- a socially-conscious business dedicated to helping folks create the life they want. … Because, honestly, how else are we going to change the world? Cynthia: This was a massive leap of faith. Cortney: Most definitely. Cynthia: Did you pause to ask yourself what were the stories you had created that resulted in the reality that you were experiencing? In doing so, did you discover errors in your thought process? Cortney: They have a saying in Italian, la mente mente (“the mind lies”). In big life decisions, I do my best to ignore what the mind is telling me and lead instead from my core. Cynthia: So were you even thinking strategy at that point in time? Cortney: Strategy was less important than taking action. I knew I’d make plenty of mistakes (and I did!), but I figured I’d course correct along the way and ultimately land where I wanted. Page 142 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Cynthia: How important is being able to trust one’s own intuition? Cortney: It’s of paramount importance. The answers are not “out there.” The answers are in you. (See “the mind lies.”) Cynthia: Did your decision bring you closer to your most authentic self? Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

an espresso, checking my blackberry and my iPhone, and pretending to have it all together. I was just starting to need an extra wall for all the trophies: rising career, publications, company car, husband, daughter, marathon-runner physique, Jimmy Choo heels. . . . Yet, with every gold star, success eluded me more. I didn’t realize then, but I do now, that success comes from within -- it’s a state of inner contentedness, fulfillment, and awareness that comes with knowing that with every breath, you are becoming a better version of you. Cynthia: The phrase you keep coming back to is sustain-ability. You’re not talking about the sustaining our environment but the ability to sustain one’s self? What’s your personal practice? Cortney: Yes, SIMPLE · SUSTAIN · ABILITY redefines sustainability as the ability to sustain yourself. It’s simple: If you’re making yourself a better person, you’re making the world a better place.

Cortney: It most certainly did. I’ve peeled off so many layers along my journey that I sometimes feel like I’m walking around naked. This is me. And that’s all you’ll find if you come looking. :) Cynthia: Did this change your perception of success? Cortney: Just 5 years ago, you could have spotted me on a private jet, sipping Page 143 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

When you’re in touch with what you need, that’s when you’re flowing, leading. And that’s when people, industries, nations, and nature follow. My personal practice is to be the change I want to see. If I’m living from my values, I give permission to others to do the same. Cynthia: You’ve written that there are seven steps to being fulfilled. What are those steps? Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Cortney: That system will be available publically for the first time in my upcoming book: SIMPLE · SUSTAIN · ABILITY, Create What You Want. In the meantime, you can get a glimpse of the first three steps--and the exact strategies I used to go from deli waitress to corporate exec to successful entrepreneur-over on my new website: www.cortinc.com, which was launched on November 18th. Cynthia: Do you believe that, as individuals, we have the inherent power to change the world? Cortney: As Tolstoy most eloquently put it, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” I find this mostly to be true. Yet, it’s only when we change, when we grow, when we evolve, that the world does too.

Changing the world starts with changing

your

world.

Changing the world starts with changing your world. So, yes, we have the power. The question is: will we use it? Cynthia: The question “why?” is of special significance to you. Why? Cortney: The absolute best answer to this question is to watch Simon Sinek’s The Power of Why. :) Cynthia: What advice would you offer to others who would like to make a major life change? Page 144 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Cortney: “Success leaves clues,” as Anthony Robbins reminds us. Find someone who’s killing it in the area of your life and biz where you’d like to take it up a notch, and study them. What are they doing differently? Study their psychology, their physiology, their spirituality. And then see what resonates most with you. Emulate the example. awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy,” wrote Tagore. This appears on your website, http:// www.cortneymcdermott.com/blog/, as representing your overall philosophy. When did you first stumble upon this quote? What attracted you to it? Cortney: I’m attracted to wisdom quotes in general. I have a whole library of them in my head. This was always one of my favorites, as it reminds me that great joy comes from using our unique gifts in service to others. Cynthia: How does this quote relate to your pro bono work? And can share with my readers a little bit about your pro bono commitments? Cortney: My dad taught me to leave things better than I found them.

those teachings, the more you will make them your own, adapting them to your own specific needs, desires, and style. Cynthia: What is the one thing that holds people back from self-actualizing? Cortney: “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right,” -Henry Ford. Cynthia: "I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I Page 145 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The best way for me to do that is to splash light on untapped potential. I do this both directly -- pro-bono speaking engagements, mentoring, etc. -- and indirectly through the educational organizations I support around the world, including She’s the First, Girl Up, Kiva, Chicago Lights, and the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. Cynthia: Do you feel that humanity has an obligation of stewardship? Cortney: Obligation, no. Calling, yes. I believe that at the level of our Highest Self, we all wish to leave life better than we found it. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Cynthia: That certainly resounds of a deep sense of spirituality. Changing topics, I understand that you’re currently writing a book. I would love to hear more about it. Cortney: SIMPLE · SUSTAIN · ABILITY, Create What You Want takes a hands-on, selfhelp approach to sustainability, making it everyone’s ability. Because, think about it: If you’re not in touch with what you need, how can you really make a difference? How can you lead others? How can you break the cycle of never-enough? And if the tools you’re using aren’t simple, how can you possibly sustain the change?

If You’re NOT Growing You’re Dying! Page 149 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

How do you know if you’re growing or dying? It depends on if you’re in a rut or stuck in place! Here are some telltale signs you’re stuck: You wake up in the morning without excitement. You hit the snooze button on your smart phone or your radio alarm. Maybe you’re tempted to got back to sleep again! Maybe you want to call in sick! You cross things off your to-do list but it never feels good. Your days blur into each other. Friday afternoons are the best time of the week for you. Sunday nights are filled with dread with what’s to come Monday morning.

You’re still here and by God, as long as you’re still breathing, you’re meant to do something spectacular with your life!

So being in a rut means you’re in a suffocating routine, which feels the same everyday. You’re unmotivated and uninspired.

It’s Your Choice! Have you ever seen the movie, “Joe and the Volcano?” It starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It’s an old movie, but there’s a scene in there that’s evoked every time I think about a boring life. Joe works in a factory with terrible fluorescent lighting. He’s got a droopy lit cigarette in his mouth. His eyelids are heavy. He’s in a trance of some sort. In fact, when people are walking up the path to enter the factory, Page 150 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

they’re all listless and greenish pale. They look sick. And they’re acting! But how many people are walking around like they’re in a waking nightmare? Are you a mere drone, an automaton going through life? You get up. Go to work. Go home. Go to Bed. If you’re a parent, maybe the kids give you something exciting to look forward to at the end of the day. Or it just creates more stress for you. Is this a way to live? blur into each other that is a sign of dying potential and also a lack of ambition. What happened to that person who was going to change the world, who was going to take it by storm and make a huge difference? You’re still here and by God, as long as you’re still breathing, you’re meant to do something spectacular with your life!

So how often do you feel this way? Enthusiasm Optimism Hope Faith Joy Love

You know most of the time, you’re really not thinking. You’re operating by habit. Habit can be good. You probably get out of bed and have a morning routine to get ready to go to work. It saves you time. So some habits are actually very good and efficient. You’re in a rut when life holds so little potential for you. You wonder where all your past aspirations went. You feel like your life is on hold and that’s exactly what a rut is. You are literally dying. When days and weeks and even months Page 151 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

And how often do you feel this way? Pessimism Cynicism Despair Stubbornness Hatred

Are You Cut Off From Yourself? When was the last time you set a big juicy goal for yourself? A major reason why you may be in a rut is that you have either no goals or you’ve given up on them. Which of these describes Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

burning desire is one that inspires and motivates you. A burning desire creates excitement and stretches your current talents and abilities. Then you discover hidden ones. We all have them. But we may set up barriers for ourselves against the very thing we want. These may be asking others their opinion about what you should do. The excuses may come from yourself too. Moments of selfdoubt. Maybe the first obstacle that comes around made you throw up your arms and quit. Maybe you’ve let others opinions overwhelmingly make you stop at the idea and it never takes off. What barriers have you put up for yourself?

Fear of change Sense of futility eq. a new job would be just the same, different people, same situation (I’ve heard that one before!) Obligation I’ve had my own experiences with reinvention. My mother wanted the three of us (my younger brothers and I) to all become medical doctors and then we’d all go to China and practice. Why she even thought that was a possibility was beyond me, because we were all born in Canada! But she must have felt that we’d obey her wishes.

was rejected. I was however accepted into engineering. I had no regrets for being rejected and since it wasn’t my burning desire, I never applied again.

My middle sibling and I tried to please her. My brother was a great mathematician and flunked out of the rest of the sciences. I got as far as applying for medical school and

One day after an annual checkup my doctor’s office called me. They ONLY call if there’s bad news!

Page 152 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

As an engineer, I experienced job loss and lay offs for one reason or another for the first 10 years. My last full time position lasted 8 years and I was VERY unhappy. That’s where I had my cancer scare.

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

This event made me look inward and I discovered how truly unhappy and unfulfilled I was. While I was doing research on cervical cancer a nurse happened to comment that most victims of this cancer were people who had multiple sexual partners who also had multiple sexual partners – in other words, prostitutes! Oh no, that wasn’t me! I was a professional engineer with a young family and was also a community leader. That day saved me because it completely changed my mindset. A few weeks later I was cleared from any indication of cancer. Those few weeks led to a transformation. I dropped the victim attitude. I quit and became a free agent. I became a contractor for IT services. All the while my husband and my parents asked me about benefit packages and retirement packages. They didn’t approve. I did it anyways And for a few years it was lucrative.

Get Your Mojo Back! So I went in to see them. My doctor told me that I’d had a “positive” result from my PAP test. They found something abnormal. I needed to schedule exploratory surgery. The “C” word was used.

In my clinic I’ve helped people to get rid of their fears and doubts. We want to be as close to reality as possible. And reality is that we have control over our lives and sometimes that’s going to take courage to do that. And a firm decision.

When I left my doctor’s office I was enraged. How dare my body betray me! I was SO angry! I couldn’t believe it! I’d done everything I was supposed to do to keep healthy: good diet and exercise, but I found out it wasn’t enough.

What is the next thing that you want for your life? Is there a burning desire for something but you talk yourself out of it? Well, you’re creating a lot of indecision and unhappiness for yourself.

Page 153 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

It’s natural to feel fear, but the fear is paralyzing you. That’s why you are literally in a rut. The fear of change and everything that goes with it are keeping you where you are. And if you broke your ankle or otherwise injured yourself so that you’re bed ridden or at least can’t move very fast, then God has given you some time to consider what you want out of life. Being unable to move is a typical physical sign of slowing down and taking inventory of your life. When I had my cancer scare, I knew I wanted to make a real difference in people’s lives. For me, I’d wanted to study a natural type of medicine, maybe naturopathy, but I thought I’d have to leave home and my young family to do it. That was one barrier I put in front of me, because I didn’t even bother to look locally. So I forgot about it. Many years later and my sons were much older – one attending university in another city and the other attending high school – I began again to yearn for something better. I could see the contract jobs drying up. Hiring practices were changing. Contract wasn’t as lucrative as it used to be during Y2K. I wanted out of corporate. A friend of mine gave me some books of the spiritual realm to read and told me this was my new education. So I began to read and then looked at my options for a new career. I was seriously reinventing myself and I wasn’t asking for anyone’s permission Page 154 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

this time. In the winter of 2002-2003 I decided to go into a medical or related profession. I chose the one career path, which would allow me to use all my talents and interests – Traditional Chinese Medicine. It would also align with my values. The rest is history!

An Open Mind What is it that you want that you’re resisting? It’s usually one thing. It crosses your mind fleetingly at times. But it’s there. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Do the research. For instance, when I was looking for the next best thing for me, I settled on 3 areas: 1. Natural nutrition consultant 2. Western herbalist 3. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) I researched each one by auditing classes. I interviewed people at the schools or who were already working in these professions. I gathered all the information, wrote down the pros and cons of each. Best of all, I didn’t have to move away from my family to do any of these things.

Make a decision.

If you think you don’t know what you want, ask yourself, “What do I want?” Then be open to the answers coming your way. Allow the hints and overt evidence to appear. It’s like wanting to buy a new Toyota RAV4, for instance. All of a sudden you see a lot of RAV4s on the road. Or you want to have a baby. All of a sudden you see a lot of babies in carriages or a lot of young families. The brain has a way of showing you more of what you want to reinforce that desire. You direct your brain. Ask and you shall receive.

After doing all the research, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to study TCM. But it would take the longest amount of time and the largest outlay of investment to do it. I also knew it meant I’d have to study. I’d graduated from Engineering school 24 years before. Could I do it again? I got my last contract job and that paid for the 3+ years in formal schooling. I never asked permission to do it. I quit corporate and went back to school. Maybe this isn’t the way you’re going to proceed but I didn’t want to deal with others fears and doubts about why I couldn’t do it. Be confident.

Now what will you do with what you see? Page 155 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Stay on the path towards your goal. Obstacles are tests to your resolve. Don’t get upset by them, just navigate through them, over them, under them. Don’t let them get in your way for long. Do you know WHY you want this goal? What meaning does it hold for you? Explore that! Be aware about how you feel about this goal. The meaning you put on something is the reason why you feel enthusiastic! This is the burning desire part that is so important!

Be flexible. You have a goal. You have a plan to get there. But be sure of this. The path to it is NOT going to be smooth and straight. Quite the opposite. You’re going to meet with obstacles, challenges and objections. Your plans WILL change. Different things will come your way to try to STOP you. Or better ideas and resources will pop up! But there will also be signs that you’re doing the right thing.

Lastly, have faith! Stay on the path towards your goal. Obstacles are tests to your resolve. Don’t get upset by them, just navigate through them, over Page 156 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The doctor recommended I lose weight to get rid of the cyst. However, she warned me that it would be a difficult journey since the cyst would make weight loss more difficult than normal. The doctor was right!! I spent thousands of dollars on all kinds of diets, eattowards free ing plans and pills, but nothing worked. product now! Out of desperation, I began the 10-Day Cleanse....and 10 days later, I was 18 pounds lighter! The first 2 days of my cleanse were rough! I thought I couldn't do it and had a breakdown! But with each day, it got easier and my body felt cleaner and healthier. Now I don't crave junk food, have tons of energy and have pep in my step. On day 10, I cried because I couldn't believe I accomplished so much in so little time!! And the recognition I have received from others feels fabulous, the increase in self-esteem has been the greatest reward.

In the beginning, I just wanted to survive the 10 days and lose a few pounds. Not only did I accomplish all of that, I smashed all of my expectations and now feel like I'm on top of the world. My life will never be the same!!

about it. No batterer decides to just be violent one day and murder. Its years and years of abusing and controlling someone. It takes years before

Almost daily in the United States of America, we see a breaking news headline of domestic violence that results in homicide. The cataclysmic ending of these events seem tragic acts of domestic violence. Sadly, because there is not enough awareness and education among us, people get shaken up when it suddenly ends in death. But there is nothing sudden

most battered women call the police, while others never call the police...until they are dead and on the front headline of the News.

One day I ran for my life.

Statistics show that the number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq during 2001 and 2012 are 6,488. The number of American woman who were murdered in the US by current or ex-partners during that same time are 11,766. That's almost double the casualties than

in war. This number is growing as the vibration in the air breathes fear for the future of humanity. If there is no shift in human consciousness, the madness will continue. We need a change in the collective consciousness and each individual must make the shift. My own story and what I survived does not make me special. As dark as those past experiences may be, I no longer identify myself as a domestic violence survivor or victim. Not because it didn’t happen, but because the events in my life do not define who I am. As you can see from the statistics mentioned, there is an epidemic of Page 171 E The Magazine forenormous Today’s Female Executive

women living in fear and being killed in the name of unconsciousness. These numbers are just in the United States alone. The worldwide numbers of female deaths and assaults to woman daily are as unfathomable as the depths of the ocean. That being said, in light of collective suffering, and my sense of shared humanity, I have great compassion for others that have not been able to see beyond their suffering. I write and coach to make a life changing difference by giving voice to helping other women in transition soar above their darkest nightmares. I see so many people who continue to latch onto and live in a state of victim identity, even after the happening or event has Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

become history. They continue to fight the wars against this, and the wars against that. There is no solace or happy ending in these wars. To fight the good fight, is to seek peace within. To fight the good fight is to let go of the story and instead, choose to live a life of love and not fear. Of peace and not war. Nonjudgement and not condemnation. Nonattachment and not thwarted wanting clinging that some people call love. And finally, acceptance and not control. Being in acceptance may force you to feel out of control with a situation, or a person in your life. Just realize that the universe has given you favor. It has given you the incredible opportunity to release control. This release is very freeing. Know that this moment is all there ever is. I explain the importance of letting go in detail in my upcoming book, “Truth to Triumph”. But for now, know that that there is something rich to learn from all experiences. In your journey toward this wisdom I strive to help yourself and others annihilate all fear and worry. To let go of all guilt and regret. As one part of the whole, in humanity, know that my heart is your heart. This is shared humanity. This is true compassion. This is the gift of love that God has given us. Last month, I read of the controversial hype and outrage from domestic violence victim’s families as the announcement was made of a new limited TV series to be aired called “The People VS O.J. Simpson”. I listened to the pain and anger from the family of the victims. I listened to the justifications and intents of the producers. What is disturbing is the collective ego that keeps judgement, attachment, and nonacceptance alive. Attachment to the past is the cause for suffering. Although there are people in the world that may be entertained by your story be it in a book, movie medium, or otherwise, reviving an old unhappy story along with all of its true or fictional details does nothing to drive collective consciousness forward. Rather purpose your story to inspire others, or demonstrate the possibilities of healing. Page 173 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The importance in sharing a story, is so that others can resonate with the positive outcome and inspiration to transcend their own pain and suffering. Their own unhappy story. Society in its egoic state encourages stories to be spread, in all sorts of dramatic mediums. The mixed media feeds off of them. In fact, the more insufferable the better. It is as a clever play that lacks content. The stories themselves are not the significance, but the outcome is. The ability to transcend is much more meaningful than where you transcended from. The Divine wisdom that is gained from a past experience is more significant than the rights and wrongs of a story. The entertainment world has a huge impact on society. It can set the stage for others to feed on in a potentially harmful way where the outcome can spin a web of fear, vengefulness, and division around the globe. Conversely, the good news is that with the right dramatizations, and immense saturation of all mixed and social media, we now have the power to take massive action together, in bringing humanity to a higher level of consciousness. The world of entertainment can be a wonderful vessel for this. I believe there is a growing shift in collective consciousness taking place already, and I am grateful knowing that we have the power now, and the honor now in knowing that we can all make a difference together. We need to be responsible for what we contribute to others in the world. There are 2.5 million refugees in Turkey, worldwide homelessness, poverty, discrimination, rampant human trafficking, and victims of abuse all living life between hope and despair. Surely we can wake up as a nation, a continent, a planet…and see how a conscious shift is critical to our humanness as a global society. This shift begins with each individual at its core. The conscious shift begins in the heart.

A conscious heart contributes by sending out love and healing. A conscious tongue contributes by speaking the truth in love. When we share a story, let its only intent be one of conscious contribution. Let it be one that helps others feel they are not alone, and that there is healing, love and light in the present moment. There is no end of a tunnel. The time is now. So in the now, with your eyes, see the good in everyone and everything. Look inward and discover the key to heaven. With your ears hear only sweet soft sounds and melodies that glorify God. Listen to stories of inspiration and love. Decide that your ears will not listen to gossip about others. In the now, speak softly and kindly to others. Enjoy silence because it is in silence that you can hear the voice of God. Communicate freely. Make your thoughts and words and actions be harmonious. You may not always be able to oblige but you will always be able to speak obligingly. When you use your hands, use them righteously. They should comfort, serve and heal. Decide that your hands will no longer hit. And finally, in the now, recognize love in your heart. God lives here in the form of love. Whatever you give and send out will come back tenfold. Whatever is unloving you will walk away from. You will honor yourself and demand respect. You will have esteem because God has honored you with this privilege. Your esteem is in God. Love is God, and God is love. Live in love. So how do you shift? How do you become conscious? By letting go of the unhappy story. By dis-identifying with thought. See what the mind is doing and shift from a thought based entity to awareness. To presence. This is the end of ego and the birth, or rebirth of who you truly are. Some people who have been inflicted by some kind of suffering may find it difficult to dis-identify with an experience. Examples might be those of you who are suddenly physically disabled, or perhaps your child has suddenly been disabled. Maybe there is a major thing or event that has interrupted your life. Perhaps there was a disaster in your life and you’ve lost everything that you have identified with, and suddenly life has taken that Page 175 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

away. Things have been removed that you considered to be an essential part of who you are. Many times this is experienced through death, divorce, and disaster. I call this the three D’s of life’s inevitable suffering. I understand. I have been there. Although this may bring you feelings of emptiness and nothingness, this unsatisfying form within you can be a gateway into an awakening. Awakening to what? To you without the form. An awareness into the essence of you. And suddenly you will feel a sense of peace. You might ask, how can it happen that someone who has suddenly lost everything suddenly feel so peaceful? Wherever there is great loss in your life there is the potential for the arising of your true essence. This essence is the grace of God that lays on the other side of disaster. It is in that secret place within you waiting to be recognized and loved. It has always been there. You just need to see it. The secret to awakening is discovering your essence identity. The formless you. Who you are cannot be defined in a form or a word. Who you are is untouched by any happening or event. You are essentially the ‘I am’ that underlies all happenings and events. In this awareness, you will not only experience love in everything and every being, but you will recognize yourself as love. And that love is the recognition of God. I am delighted to continue bringing readers inspiration and spiritual support in my column each month. I invite you to visit my website, my blogs, and subscribe to my mailing list for free insight. Contact me for public speaking or personal and group coaching. Nothing is random. You reading this article is fate that brings us together today. The current work I am doing as a Life Coach and Writer, has purposed me to spread hope and inspiration to others for generational blessings. I trust that one day, although perhaps not in my lifetime, there will be an epidemic of LOVE, and not fear. I do see great potential for collective consciousness as a global community and am willing to go the distance as I live out this journey on a path of love. Living in love is no longer a quest, but is a path. Walk the path of love. See love as a path, and not a quest. Love is not an end result, but at its core it is a way of being, a way of acting, and is the essence of who you are, and a reflection of God. her company is called French Connection Entertainment... The entertainment she put together for his event was fantastic. Even the dogs took part in this event with challenges they had to meet. These dogs are all trained to serve their clients like opening drawers and so much more. There is a project in place and a fundraiser will be held in late January by Menifee Council member Greg August with the help of Nafe to raise funds to pave a road at the Canine Support Teams property on Scott Road that now is all dirt and very hard for their clients in wheelchairs to move around in. Nicole Farrell will lead up the putting together of entertainment which will include 2nd Generation Jerome Robinson of the Platters. Murrieta Nafe Member Kathy Bundy also recently held a Volkswalk and Octoberfest at her home this month in Lake Elsinore which was a great success. Kathy is also a VP for the Volkswalking organization, a group I use to belong to when I lived in Roseville, CA and walked all the time. I am a member here but have not yet been able to join their walks but it’s on my things to do. For more information on Volkswalking contact Kathy at bunznkatz@gmail.com she puts together some great Southern CA walks. Meet one of Our NAFE

Women

a small town in the Inland Valley Empire near Lake Elsinore..

Dawn Schultz,

Founder Of Operator Prom Girl

What Is It? Operation Prom Girl is a community based organization that provides prom dresses/formal gowns, shoes and accessories to high school girls, Military Wives, and women with financial hardships or special circumstances. While the prom dress is the main attraction the real goal behind what we do is to promote inner beauty, self love, acceptance and worth. This group accomplishes this during their annual dress give away event for High School girls as well as throughout the year for those special Military Balls, or other formal events.

Left to right Nafe members Dawn Schultz, Robbie Motter, Nafe Global Coordinator with donated gown at Nafe meeting, and Murrieta Nafe member Kathy Bundy..

I first met Dawn Schultz when she was invited to my Murrieta Nafe meeting as a guest by Nafe Member Kathy Bundy who is VP of Southern CA Volkssports. She loved the meeting and is now a Murrieta Nafe member. Did you go to your PROM? Or where you one of many who did not have a gown so did not go? I was one of those that did not go as I grew up in Foster Homes and Children’s homes so never had toys and was on my own at 14 so never had funds for gowns. So when I heard what she did I said “Wow this is something my Nafe Community could get behind and touch a life so I asked her to come speak for my Menifee Nafe network and all the gals brought donated gowns for her to support Operation Prom Girl's 2016 event.

When Was It Founded?

Operation Prom Girl So Cal is a quickly growing community outreach that is on a steady roll since the very first event in the spring of 2014. Founded in Wildomar, Page 188 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

How We Got Started and Where Are We Today In December 2013, as Dawn stood in her kitchen surrounded by boxes that needed to be unpacked from her recent move from L.A. and a 20 year stint as a full time makeup artist, she thought about her oldest daughter and how she wanted to give her and her youngest, the very best in life. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

She remembered those very tough high school years with her, peer pressure, bullying, trying to fit in, popularity, dances and proms. When she was not able to financially send her daughter to prom someone stepped up and made prom possible. What a blessing and a dream come true! She then realized there were probably high school girls in her community who have special circumstances or hardships and prom isn’t a reality for them. She had this vision of collecting prom dresses and sending these girls to prom, while inspiring them to love and value themselves. (***At first she was planning on having just a little garden party in her small home)....The reality is you can put on a fancy dress and shoes, have your hair/makeup done, look put together on the outside and be broken on the inside. But she calls it living behind the mask, hiding while chasing the unattainable Hollywood standard of beauty, and being whoever “you” want me to be. She thought to herself if I could just talk to these girls if they only knew their value and worth their life would be different. Dawn was motivated to share love and hope with the girls in

her community. She held their first Operation Prom Girl event in April 2014, for local High School girls with hardships or circumstances that were preventing them from going to prom. She did not have bells and whistles just her and a handful of volunteers with willing hearts. Every girl that attended left with a prom dress. Dawn is in the process of expanding this to a year-round service in the future they want to create classes and offer other opportunities. She and her partner Linda Harris who is also a Nafe member are now starting their 4th year event, which will take place early 2017, and are again looking for all sort of dress donations which includes jewelry, shoes, makeup and accessories. This organization is run totally on volunteers and donations. The attendees all will leave with a dress, shoes, goodie bags, and resources and referrals. All at no charge! Thave also included Military Women as well to receive gowns for their military balls. For more information on upcoming events or to fill out volunteer submission forms go to their website www.opromgirl.wordpress.com Dawn feels it's important to let people understand that all it takes is a willing heart to move forward with dreams and visions. Many people might be called to do missions and ministries in foreign lands, but there is always a ministry here in our own backyards and we don't need to look far to find one. There are many out there who need genuine love and to be shown they are cherished. In addition to running Operation Prom Girl Dawn is also a personal Uber Driver and her clients love her as she drives very safely and is funny and makes their trip so much more fun, she also provides a playlist of your own personal songs, you can contact her at 951-457-1363. Also she is a professional makeup artist and is available for weddings and other special events, she use to work in Los Angeles 20 years plus with Chanel, MAC Cosmetics and Estee Lauder.
