Welcome to the March issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executives. This month we are bringing attention to The Women on Wall Street. If ever there was a definition of the “Ol Boy’s Club” this would be it. Pay particular attention to an video interview featuring Muriel Siebert. During that interview Muriel recalls asking a friend “Where can I find a place to work (on Wall Street) that will pay me they same thing the men are paid? The friend replied, Don’t be ridiculous– you won’t! Buy a seat (NYSE) and work for yourself. Before you get started, I wanted to share a lesson regarding closed markets and overcoming barriers to entry. I can do that in six words Ignore the Barriers and proceed on. Most of the time you won’t be arrested. That last statement sounds bazaar but there was a time in our recent history when women could be arrested for voting, running for political office, smoking, buying property without your husband’s permission and using birth control of any kind without your husband's permission. Some of these practices still go on in other countries today. Sometimes when people or institutions say no, you have to go one better. That may require you to “Do It Bigger” and “Do It Better”. If we approach the no’s with a challenge of “absolutely yes”, you will find that you land somewhere significantly higher then the opportunity you were begging for would have taken you. When you ask for something, it is actually loaned to you. When resources or circumstances warrant a change, the grantor can redeem the gift. The definition of POWER is the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or quality. Nothing in that definition says ask for it. Figure out how to create your own opportunities.

The landscape of the internet was forever changed when social media platforms emerged, and with the unprecedented reach it has provided us globally, it has also created an overwhelm in the average person and more so business, than the internet itself. So how do you combat that overwhelm? That’s where the secret sauce comes into play. The secret sauce to social media success resides in these 2 questions;

1 One call For many years, I have made a daily call to my mother Elena. It's become a ritual. We laugh, inspire each other, and chat about life. Today with so many distractions and devices we forget how simple it is to make a phone call. My daughter Steph who lives on her own now is a huge texter, over 3500 texts per month. I know because I pay her cell phone bill still. Like mother like daughter it is. Every night Steph calls me to say "how was your day? and goodnight." It warms my heart to hear her voice. Make a call to someone you haven't spoken to and surprise them. You will hear them say "you made my day, it was great to hear your voice."

3 One video We have all owned so many camcorders and have collections of old family movies down in the basement. Today we have the ability to make our own little movie on the smartphone in our pocket. In an instant, we can touch a life, even in another country. Last year I was inspired by a reply that I received from my Facebook friend named Florencia who lives in Argentina. After posting a 15-second video on my personal page. She admitted that she silently followed me for a year without a comment. It was the video that resonated with her and she told me that she had been teaching her students in Argentina about positivity and using my videos as her inspiration. 1_,2_,3_ Now add your name into the mix. Do you know what your name means? Maybe you should find out! Most people don't know but my name was supposed to be "Santa," (yes as in clause)! Thank goodness, my mom, convinced my dad and they agreed on Sandra! When I was in grade school my mom gave me a little card that said Sandra: Helper of humanity, defender of mankind. Enjoys captivating her audience, curiosity makes her one desire to know things, has an artistic nature, gives joy and comfort to all that cross her path. You would have thought that my mother knew. My ingredients have been sifted together throughout the years. Let me tell you how. In the 6th grade, it was a teacher that encouraged me to use my gifts to inspire others. One was the gift of gab! Most kids would have got in trouble for talking too much, but I turned it into positive energy! Mrs. Fillipone told me that my classmates looked up to me. She told me that I was a character, a fun person that everyone liked to be around. Sometimes a little bossy, though. Little did I know those were all the ingredients of a good leader right? By the way, I even saved all my report cards to prove it! As Glinda once said to Dorothy, "You've always had it, my dear." Throughout life, I've always had it, but it wasn't until my childhood friend Patti called me and told me she had cancer and it was then that I started cooking something up.

What? Are you a chef? No. I'm an Inspirational Expert! People always told me that a great entrepreneur is one that takes a problem, a pain point and creates a solution. During the phone call, my friend told me she lost her hair and hated wearing hats and wigs, she didn't even want to leave her home and lost her self-esteem. When my young daughters who were 6 and 10 years old at the time saw me upset, they asked if they could help. That's when we created a soft fun and comfortable head covering that we sent to Patti to cheer her up. This kind gesture turned into founding The CUREchief Foundation Inc. (a 501c3 charity) that I created with my daughters. Together with a group of Caring people brought together by fabric, our volunteers were able to deliver over 500,000 colorful bandanas to cancer patients worldwide. I have a saying that I came up over 20 years ago, "You never know how or when you might touch another life." Today I call myself the Inspirational Expert. I am the Co-Founder of Say it International an all women run Benefit Corporation whose mission is to cause positive disruptions My daughters are on my team again, as they continue to be my inspirations! Once again it started with a kind gesture. One day we decided to stir things up. Tired of all the negativity on television, and online. The girls and I wrote positive messages on little cards and handed them out at a coffee shop in town. The reaction we got was priceless. People started telling their friends and it turned into a movement called #Sayitforward that then turned into a business! I have learned that we all have gifts and when I finally started to share mine. The results became extraordinary interactions. It really isn't about doing more, it's about doing less more meaningfully. Let me sprinkle on you a few more words of inspiration. All of you have the ingredients to make something amazing. How would you describe your lifestyle? Busy, crazy busy, too much to do, not enough time, hectic, hurried, rushed, and not a moment to think about taking care of yourself…? Does that sound familiar? I call it the superhuman lifestyle. What is superhuman? It is having qualities and characteristics that exceed those found in humans. My reference to “superhuman” is people who have too much on their plate – due to needs, wants, or expectations – and set aside their human needs to get things done. Humans who are running faster than they have strength, with their superhuman efforts… SuperWorkers, SuperMoms, SuperExecs… you know who you are. You cut corners in your basic human needs (sleep, nutrition, and social support) in order to get things done… because there are only 24 hours in a day. How do you prevent burnouts and manage life-work balance when your lifestyle demands more than what’s humanly possible?
Yes, it is life life--work, not work work--life. Every once in a while someone asks, “Does it matter which comes first, if it’s balanced?” Absolutely!

The fact that balance is even a topic of discussion implies the current state of imbalance. We talk about balance because it is presently lacking. This is why the pursuit of balance is a huge interest for many. We want it, but we don’t have it yet. When you place “work” before “life” in your sentence, the order of those two words reveals the subconscious mentality that says work does come before life. Choose your words carefully, and in correct order. Life-work. The right combination sets the energy for your desired outcome – balance. Without this right combination, balance continues to be illusive. When that balance is achieved, the order of the two words still matters. Balance is temporary. It is easily threatened. One choice or one event can turn the balance into a distant memory. So yes, the order does matter. It’s life-work, not work-life. Not because I want to see people slacking off at work so they can go play somewhere else. No, quite the contrary. Take care of yourself first, so you can be at your best in everything you do. Think about the life you want to live. What does it look like? Does it take a superhuman to live that life? Why? Do you feel strong, energetic, and ready to conquer the world in your superhuman status? If so, for how long? Does your superhuman status only remind you of your human limitations? Yes. It does. And the superhuman results that you wish for in your superhuman efforts do not materialize unless you respect these human limitations. Lack of rest and nutrition caused by your superhuman efforts unsurprisingly leads to ailment. It‘s your

body telling you to stop the madness and treat the body with some TLC. This is the true sign of depletion. The depletion then leads to masking of emotions in order to continue your steadfast commitment to get things done. Neglecting emotional human needs leads to detachment from social support. Prolonged efforts to be superhuman can be tremendously damaging to all aspects of human life. There is a lot of pain involved in living the superhuman lifestyle.
1. Why Are You A Superhuman?
Proper management of the basic human needs is paramount in order to achieve optimum results and maintain balance in your life. It is the solution to reaching your highest potential. We have all experienced the unpleasant results when the human needs are neglected. Sickness, loneliness, poor self-awareness, and so much more. But you continue your superhuman efforts. Why? Because you want to, or because you’re expected to? And whose expectation is that? How many persons’? What is it that is so important that you can’t even be allowed to be human through the experience? What is truly at stake here? Is anything less than superhuman acceptable?
In order to manage your superhuman efforts, you must know what is driving you. Common sources of determination to be superhuman are: goals and ambitions, competitive nature, perfectionism, responsibilities, fear of failure, personal pride and self-worth, and family’s standard of excellence. Which one is yours?
2. It’s about You The comparison of human qualities and superhuman efforts brings us to this truth: Superhuman status is an illusion. Superhuman effort only implies delayed attention to human needs. Whether you want to admit it or not, no matter how long you want to be exceptionally special in your superhuman status, human needs will prevail as the controlling factor in life. Be proud to admit it. You are human. Capable of achievements and mistakes, deserving of love and forgiveness, complete with so many gifts to offer to the world. Be wise in dealing with your limitations and imperfections. Own them with confidence.
A. Are You Good Enough? You want to accomplish more and obtain more because what you currently have is not good enough. Are you included in those things that are not good enough? Will you still have the same confidence for approval and self-worth without your superhuman accomplishments? Are you good enough? Do you ever think, “If I were good enough, this wouldn’t be happening to me.” Do you think that what you have or what happens to you determines your worth as a human being? What if you were wrong? What would change in your life then? Your infinite worth does not require superhuman efforts. We don’t know why things happen the way they do and it’s not always clear what we’re supposed to learn from each experience. Each of us is a unique being that never existed before and will never be duplicated again. And that makes each of us most exquisitely good enough.

B. Gap between Expectations and Reality
D. Deliberate Actions for Transformation
Superhuman status is a constant push and pull between expectations and reality. How do you manage your gap between expectations and reality? How does this gap affect your self-esteem, your relationships, your sleep, your health? What would be different if you raised your expectations? What would be available to you if you lowered your expectations? What are you afraid that would actually happen if you changed your level of expectations either way? Grow your tolerance for this gap between expectations and reality. One does not measure up to the other, but be okay with that. Learn to be comfortable with imperfections in life. Even if you think you can fix it, you probably can’t. Imperfections will remain as imperfections, so leave it at that.
Superhuman efforts can never last long. They work best when done in short spurts. Prolonged superhuman efforts will come to an end with a complete meltdown that shrinks your mental toughness. Crippling depression may follow. An early grave is a potential consequence as well, as it almost was for me. Superhuman life is painful and unsustainable. Change back to the healthy and balanced human life that you deserve.
C. You as a Priority Where do you place yourself on your list of priorities? When there’s too much on your plate, you’re being pulled from all directions, and you feel that burnout coming on, where do you place yourself on your list of priorities then? How important are you to you? Seriously! Despite your best intentions, putting yourself last does more harm than good - for everyone, especially you. When you put yourself first, not at the expense of others but as a stewardship over your own life, you are taking care of yourself to be at your best. When you're at your best, everyone wins.

Woodhull and her sister Tennessee (Tennie) Claflin became the first womenstockbrokers and in 1870, opened a brokerage firm on Wall Street. She made a fortune on the New York Stock Exchange. Woodhull, Claflin & Company opened in 1870, with the assistance of the wealthy Cornelius Vanderbilt.
Hetty Green Born to a wealthy family, Hetty used to read the financial column for her father. As she grew older she realized she could make financial decisions as good as-if not better than most of her male counterpart. She was nicknamed the "Witch of Wall Street", was an Americanbusinesswoman and financier known as "the richest woman in America" during the Gilded Age. Isabel Benham, whose deep knowledge of the railroad industry made her an influential bond analyst at a time when few women held positions of authority on Wall Street, has died. She was 103. She died May 18 in her New York City apartment, according to a death notice in the New York Times. No cause was given. Benham started working on Wall Street during the Great Depression. In 1964, following almost 30 years with R.W. Pressprich & Co., she became the first female partner in the firm’s 55-year history. The Museum of American Finance in Manhattan, which included Benham in a 2009 “Women of Wall Street” exhibition, said that also made her the first female partner at any Wall Street bond house.
Muriel Siebert There were no women on the trading floor until December 2, 1967, Muriel Siebert became the first women to obtain a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. She had She had trouble getting a loan for the $445K which was the cost of the seat. She started as an analyst and worked her way o the lader to a seat on Wall street. When you read it is O.K to be a B.R.A.T., you probably think about a child screaming at the top of their lungs stomping their foot, right? Not exactly what you aspire to be. I agree. If you think about it, isn’t that what we become when we are stressed beyond capacity, feeling that we are at the end of our rope? Lack of care for ourselves will turn us in to that image every day and twice on Sunday. Stress can bring the strongest person to their knees, and when it happens it is never pretty.
Screaming, being difficult and pushing success away are not characteristics of a B.R.A.T., they are symptoms of what I call the “Human Doing Syndrome.” As busy successful women we wear many hats; businesswoman, partner, caretaker, taxi driver, manager; if it needs to get done we do it. We are so awesome at taking care of everyone else in our lives we run out of energy and time for ourselves. Too many woman I meet feel that taking care of themselves feels too selfish. Or I meet

the exact opposite; they love the idea, but they have no idea of how to do it. So either way, they keep doing what they are doing until something snaps. Screaming, being difficult, controlling things and pushing success away are not characteristics of a B.R.A.T., they are symptoms of what I call the “Human Doing Syndrome.” The Human Doing Syndrome happens when the pursuit of achieving success gets us so caught up in the doing of life, we forget to connect with the being of life. We lose our connection to the experience of being enough. In our misguided pursuit of success, we sacrifice important things in the hopes of doing enough to earn it. On this road we give up something essential, something we never meant to give up; our well-being. We find ourselves slaves to what I call our mind static. Our natural state of being is to feel whole complete and perfect. As children we knew this. As adults we find ourselves in a constant state of busyness doing - doing -

doing until something breaks. When it does do we stop? No, we ignore it, medicate it and keep doing. If that is what your life has become, a series on never ending tasks, then please stop; that is not what life is about.
Success is our birthright and it not something that we have to sacrifice ourselves for Learning to put yourself first is the only way to really have it all. And for the record, I do believe we can have it all, but it requires a new approach to receiving success. An approach that creates less stress, burn-out and anxiety. Success is our birthright, and it is not something that we have to sacrifice ourselves for; success is something that we already are. Our job as human beings is to grow and prepare ourselves to receive it every day, regardless of our life circumstance.
The problem is, we have forgotten how to do that. In the process of becoming
adults we get so busy getting ready for life, we forgot to find a way to be in our lives. We not only forgot to put ourselves first, we forget to put ourselves on the list at all. When we try to make a change there is something or someone telling us that something is more important. It is not anyone’s fault. It is our culture. I grew up in a loving American-Armenian, dysfunctional, yet traditional middle class family. My need to break out and live a dream they couldn’t imagine or understand was tough on all of us. If you can relate to my story you too may have gotten the message that asking for what you desired was being a “spoiled brat.” I’m here to tell you it is okay to be a BRAT. In fact, I encourage it, with my family’s blessing. J These days, my
mom encourages me to get on my BRATmobile every chance she gets, and I love her for it.

Let’s get in touch with your inner BRAT right now. Take a moment and remember when you were a child. Remember a happy time in your childhood when you felt awesome, whole and enough. If that is difficult for you, think of your own children or those you know. Notice how wide-eyed, innocent and open they are. Notice how they play? It is so magical how they can think of something and boom…they become it. With all of their being they experience what they need in that moment. Small children live in the moment and they trust their needs will be met. They know they are worthy of greatness and they expect nothing less. What I really appreciate is they ask until they get something. No is never a permanent answer. It
is true, isn’t it? When you tell a small child no, what is their first response? “Why?” or “ I need it I really do.” Those were my niece’s favorite lines as a toddler and a small child. If

One cannot give from an empty well. Once upon a time you were that child who believed everything was available to you. You felt worthy and you knew you deserved everything you desired. You were the child who focused singlemindedly on getting what you wanted and kept pushing until you got it. Even if you didn’t ask out right like my niece, you found your own special way of getting your needs met. You naturally understood and applied the key principles to achieving success: Belief (I’m entitled to it) Self-esteem (I deserve it) Focus (I see it and desire it now) Commitment (I’ll keep going until I get it).
Being a BRAT restores these four things. With these skills back in place, you find yourself able to make things happen on your terms.
You begin to remember what too many adults have forgotten; one cannot give from an empty well. If we don’t ask for anything or refuse to receive, we have nothing to

and in that process you find time for the things and people that are important. You find getting things done is no longer a struggle. It is something you enjoy and look forward to. You find yourself getting excited knowing everything is going to work out. Trusting the process becomes easy and allows you+ to relax and have fun. Being a BRAT allows us to share and give to others. We are trustworthy and know to make the impossible possible. Reconnecting with your inner BRAT is liberating, empowering and most of all lots of fun. It brings back the magic and wonder back to your life.

Most of us starve at our own banquet because we don’t recognize our bounty. We get served an abundance of nutrition but, because it didn’t come in the form we are familiar with, we turn it away and then complain that the universe doesn’t come through. Be willing to receive success; let go of your expectations of how you THINK it should look. I am here to tell you success is your birthright but it never looks the way you think it should. Being stuck in expectation makes you blind to what you already have. The secret to receiving is to believe and see that you already have it. Once you can see and feel that you can receive more and it will feel wonderful.
remember: Where attention goes, energy flows — forming thoughts that fuel action and create desired results. Ask yourself each day; “What is one action I can take to make my dream happen?” No matter how small it may be take it and be proud of yourself. You are one step closer and it is enough.
Teach: It is important to pay it forward. Give what you desire most to receive. Once you realize that being a B.R.A.T. is more than okay, be willing to teach others who desire to be a B.R.A.T. too. What you share with others comes back to you tenfold. This was the biggest lesson I learned on my journey re-discovering my inner brat. Helping others has accelerated my journey and has made the most difficult days of my life worth experiencing.

The ROI related to mentoring is not limited to workplaces, as the foundation of mentoring is about the growth and development of people through the guidance and support of others. Women interact with girls in a number of ways that extend beyond the workplace, but the personal development that girls can achieve by being mentored by a woman is unlimited. A number of organizations exist whereby women are supporting, encouraging and mentoring girls with the desire to build their confidence, belief and awareness that the thoughts, dreams and desires of girls are valued. As a parent, caregiver, teacher or any role that provides guidance to children, the potential to reap the same benefits that mentoring can provide in the workplace exists. No matter the context for wanting to mentor or be mentored, the underlying factor is that mentors have a desire to help in the personal or professional development of somebody else and mentees have a desire to learn and grow. I share in The ATHENA Prodigies that desire, communication and identifying what each individual wants to get out of the relationship are critical factors to be developed and included when mentoring. A mentors desire to help or serve others is critical to the establishment of trust which will be developed on in a later column. It is the desire in both the mentor and mentee that needs to be harnessed and identified prior to the onset of a mentoring relationship. Why is Desire an Important Factor to Consider/ Assess When Being a Mentor or Mentee? With mentoring, desire is the inner-drive or emotion that causes an individual to identify that they have a need, sometimes unmet, to serve others or grow. Desire may be mixed with the intuition faculty, knowing that playing a role in a mentoring relationship is something you need but is not fully understood why at the time. Either way, desire is needed in order to provide an emotional connection to the process in order to help set up the relationship for long-term success. Emotional connection When an individual is emotionally connected to a situation or process, their engagement in the outcome is increased. Whether the connection is a parent mentoring their child to increase their confidence in a school subject with the outcome to raise their marks or a Manager mentoring a Junior employee on how to market a product in different ways with the outcome to increase sales, the emotional connection not only increases the engagement of individuals in the process of mentoring, but it increases their desire to be engaged with the person needs they are working with. Mentors should have a desire for their mentee to succeed, as a mentees success does not only mean that they have achieved certain skills or knowledge, but that the mentors skill and knowledge was correct, successfully transferred Page 87 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
and applied. A mentees success is validation of a mentor’s leadership and accomplishments that created the desire to want to share it in the first place. Who doesn’t want to be a part of somebody else achieving success? The glory and gratitude that a mentee feels when they have succeeded and achieved their goals is dispersed to all those who knew they were a part of that milestone, expanding the reach and impact of the emotion.
The emotional connection between mentor and mentee is also what is needed when the relationship or outcomes are not ideal or are facing challenges. That desire to continue to support the other person regardless of what is happening in the surrounding environment provides the will by both parties to stay committed to each other. provides an additional bond to connect mentors and mentees and keep them focused on the positive long-term success and not short-term troubles.
Setting up for LongTerm Success Long-term success and outcomes from mentoring are reliant on connecting the right people at the right time to each other. Pairing of mentors and mentees is a process that should be executed very carefully and identifying the root of each person’s desire can ensure that a proper mentoring pair is established so that desires and goals are matched up which also helps make the initial connection for the relationship stronger. If either a mentor or mentee is lacking in desire, then the emotional engagement and sub-conscious commitment to any established outcomes is not fully there. Moving forward with mentoring whereby either individual is not committed does not set up the relationship for long-term success. As mentioned above, commitment is needed to whether the rocky periods that will be presented in the relationship, and if desire if lacking by even one individual the chance for long-term commitment or even short-term success is slim. I use various levels of reflection questions at the start of the book to have women really think and understand the why behind their desire to mentor a girl. Reflection questions can be asked to prospective mentors and mentees through informal or formal interviews. An alternate process might be to have a question sheet where answers are written down. In either case, determining that mentors and mentees possess the desire to help or grow in their development relies more on an instinctual faculty providing a sense of the beliefs and behaviors that are creating the interest for one to be a part of a mentoring dynamic.Desire is an inherent need to attain something that brings enjoyment. Whether it is the attainment of new knowledge and skill needed to personally or professionally advance, or gifting someone with knowledge and skill, the impact is that mentors and mentees want to enjoy being a part of the experience and transformation that can exist in a mentoring dynamic.
How do you Assess Desire? As desire is more about an emotion that one has, there really isn’t an analytical method for measuring it. How it is identified is using the same process that is going to create effective mentoring relationships; communication. Interest in becoming a mentor or mentee may be part of a standard workplace performance development process or annual goal setting and performance management discussions. For Managers, parents, teachers or caregivers, it is also about using your expertise to identify if you are aware of someone who could benefit from being a mentor or mentee.

I admit it. I’m a Law of Attraction junkie. Throughout my life unexplained miracles have manifested, and I am profoundly thankful. When the theory of Law of Attraction first found me, it became clear that I was unknowingly applying a practical strategic system influenced by mindset and inspired action. Imagine that! Once the knowledge was revealed, I researched and learned to improve how to use it, and strategically apply it to become stronger in manifesting my business and life goals. I’m an intuition junkie. Who here has experienced not following their intuition and regretted it? I’m sure every one of you is raising your hand. You see, we are taught to ignore that feeling in the belly, that knowingness that something isn’t right, those images that float into our mind’s eye and those words that seemingly come from nowhere. It’s not practical we are told! However, take a look at the successful leaders throughout time, and you find that intuition played an enormous role in their success. Hitting that “start” button, and knowing that following specific steps will create certain results, has the freedom component that

You engage the software by pressing on a sequence of icons that allow your phone to send signals to a cell tower that bounces the info to a satellite. The information you want gets “downloaded” from the satellite “out there” back to the tower then forwards it to the gps system on your phone. The system then guides you on your journey to your desired location. The specific steps you took downloaded information energetically to get you what you wanted.
It’s a system. When learning leadership and communication styles specific steps lead you towards identifying another’s behavior style. That information helps you improve your communication skills and deliver information in a way the recipient clearly understands. All systems need to be learned and practiced. They influence you to do better and when you know them well enough to wash, rinse and repeat those systems send you rockin and rollin. My wash, rinse, repeat mantra actually got in the way. Ironically, what I teach leaders to not do, I did. I was so busy creating that my intuition took a back seat. It was nudging me to stop and listen. Instead I kept going. Themed threads such as “Marketing Monday” and “Share Your Success Friday” were created to guide daily discussion and keep the “wall” clean to provide structure and make it easy on the eyes and brain. The daily threads went from

2 per week to 7 per week. Over time, engagement dropped, and I was getting tired posting the threads every day,…something was just off. A question to myself, “Didn’t I create a Wash, Rinse, Repeat system that allowed me to post a thread every day, and help the members participate, and make life easy for me in the process?” Hmmmmm. Nope. Just before the community was created, I rolled up my sleeves and researched the Facebook groups to which I belonged. One thriving group had 5000 members and only one weekly thread promotion. Another thriving group had over a thousand members and used daily threads. My practical mission

was to create a community that merged the essence of both.
In examining my “practical mission” the discovery came that I was trying too hard to be like the leaders of the other groups. I became a “borrower” of their energy instead of focusing on my own energy 100% of the time when engaging MY community. When I was in alignment, the community blossomed with interaction. When I was out of alignment, working to make the community something it didn’t want to be, interaction dropped. My zeal on serving the community became too intense and the community energy went into a hole thus slowing the flow. It’s similar to when you lose the satellite GPS signal when driving. All of a sudden the transmission stops and you don’t know where to go.

In my zeal to “wash, rinse, repeat” I was not listening to my own intuition and how I was feeling. There was too much stuff, it became heavy and the original lightness and fun went on vacation! It was time to reignite the flame, and reach out to the members to explore solutions and opportunities, and ask what they wanted. Mind you, I have been asking for feedback all along. This time was different, and they knew it. A poll was created with thread titles, and feedback from the community has been robust. My intuition of three weekly threads was spot on, and the answers validated it. Why did I not listen before?? ARGH! I’m an Intuitive Leader! I should know better! The wash, rinse, repeat system of three threads a week will be instituted, and the community will attract exactly who it’s meant to. Now that the answers are in my grasp, it’s key to keep

top-of-mind that as the community leader and creator, I remain true to myself and how I lead. It’s about trusting, listening and employing the Law of Attraction and Intuition steps faithfully and merging them with my practical skills.
And BEWARE! It’s important to shake things up in a community every once in a while and give it a good cleaning. Those who are more introverted dislike change, whereas those who are extroverted, love change. If you don’t change you lose momentum with change-lovers. If

She’s A Vet The Women Veteran Business Movement “What it means to Belong.” Last week, during a Women’s History Month announcement from the White House, by the National Women’s Business Council, revealed that the number of Women Owned Businesses in America reached the 10,000,000 mark! Additionally, the significant growth of Women Veteran Owned Businesses was highlighted.

In this article, I will highlight a few of the events that are occurring throughout the US to educate and empower Women Veteran Owned Businesses to start and grow VeteranOwned Businesses. These events occur unbeknownst to many aspiring (and existing) Women Veteran Business Owners.
There are 383,302 Veteran women-owned businesses in the United States. That’s an increase of 286,188 of businesses, or 294.7%, from 2007. Of nonfarm and privately -held Veteran businesses, 15.2% are women Empowering Women Veterans Retreat at Stone -owned, in 2007, 4.0% were women owned. In her early years of service, the internal routine, for many women who did not comply with the sexual pressure, many times led for women to actually be Court Martialed or simply lowered in ranks or out casted by their male peers in a mental health brandishing to even a Dishonorable Discharge. It was not enough for Marylyn Harris to accept the Military Silent Code in her days of service, and upon her return to the public sector after her service, she had to address her own Military Sexual Trauma and PTSD issues by regularly attending Combat Woman Support Groups. Marylyn launched the Nation’s first and only Women Veterans’ Business More than 30,000 women veterans in her local Houston office and eventually over 191,000 across the entire state of Texas received support in their own needs to actualize their economic growth in success in their developments of their own businesses. The Mission of the Women Veterans Business Center (WVBC), located in Houston, TX is to educate and empower women veterans, and their families who together work towards empowerment of women veterans after post-Military challenges many face, including potential PTSD, unemployment, depression or even mental illness or homelessness without the support behind their recovery and economic growth. Marylyn Harris only fittingly as a “Champion” and one that elevates “Change” in her daily support behind over two hundred thousand veteran women, was met with a very surprising phone call which appeared on her Caller ID, as “White House,” in a day, like no other she will never forget. She received a call from the White House, with invitation with her family to receive her “Champion of Change Award.” She had been nominated without her knowledge, and elected the recipient of this Honorable Award in 2013, meeting President Obama and the First Lady. in war. This number is growing as the vibration in the air breathes fear for the future of humanity. If there is no shift in human consciousness, the madness will continue. We need a change in the collective consciousness and each individual must make the shift. My own story and what I survived does not make me special. As dark as those past experiences may be, I no longer identify myself as a domestic violence survivor or victim. Not because it didn’t happen, but because the events in my life do not define who I am. women living in fear and being killed in the name of unconsciousness. These numbers are just in the United States alone. The worldwide numbers of female deaths and assaults to woman daily are as unfathomable as the depths of the ocean. That being said, in light of collective suffering, and my sense of shared humanity, I have great compassion for others that have not been able to see beyond their suffering. I write and coach to make a life changing difference by giving voice to helping other women in transition soar above their darkest nightmares. become history. They continue to fight the wars against this, and the wars against that. There is no solace or happy ending in these wars. To fight the good fight, is to seek peace within. To fight the good fight is to let go of the story and instead, choose to live a life of love and not fear. Of peace and not war. Non-judgement and not condemnation. Non-attachment and not thwarted wanting clinging that some people call love. And finally, acceptance and not control. Being in acceptance may force you to feel out of control with a situation, or a person in your life. Just realize that the universe has given you favor. It has given you the incredible opportunity to release

Last month, I read of the controversial hype and outrage from domestic violence victim’s families as the announcement was made of a new limited TV series to be aired called “The People VS O.J. Simpson”. I listened to the pain and anger from the family of the victims. I listened to the justifications and intents of the producers. What is disturbing is the collective ego that keeps judgement, attachment, and non-acceptance alive. Attachment to the past is the cause for suffering. Although there are people in the world that may be entertained by your story be it in a book, movie medium, or otherwise, reviving an old unhappy story along with all of its true or fictional details does nothing to drive collective consciousness forward. Rather
purpose your story to inspire others, or demonstrate the possibilities of healing.

The importance in sharing a story, is so that others can resonate with the positive outcome and inspiration to transcend their own pain and suffering. Their own unhappy story. Society in its egoic state encourages stories to be spread, in all sorts of dramatic mediums. The mixed media feeds off of them. In fact, the more insufferable the better. It is as a clever play that lacks content. The stories themselves are not the signifi-

A conscious heart contributes by sending out love and healing. A conscious tongue contributes by speaking the truth in love. When we share a story, let its only intent be one of conscious contribution. Let it be one that helps others feel they are not alone, and that there is healing, love and light in the present moment. There is no end of a tunnel. The time is now. So in the now, with your eyes, see the good in everyone and everything. Look inward and discover the key to heaven. With your ears hear only sweet soft sounds and melodies that glorify God. Listen to stories of inspiration and love. Decide that your ears will not listen to gossip about others. In the now, speak softly and kindly to others. Enjoy silence because it is in silence that you can hear the voice of God. Communicate freely. Make your thoughts and words and actions be harmonious. You may not always be able to oblige but you will always be able to speak obligingly. When you use your hands, use them righteously. They should comfort, serve and heal. Decide that your hands will no longer hit. And finally, in the now, recognize love in your heart. God lives here in the form of love. Whatever you give and send out will come back tenfold. Whatever is unloving you will walk away from. You will honor yourself and demand respect. You will have esteem because God has honored you with this privilege. Your esteem is in God. Love is God, and God is love. Live in love. So how do you shift? How do you become conscious? By letting go of the unhappy story. By dis-identifying with thought. See what the mind is doing and shift from a thought based entity to awareness. To presence. This is the end of ego and the birth, or rebirth of who you truly are. Some people who have been inflicted by some kind of suffering may find it difficult to dis-identify with an experience. Examples might be those of you who are suddenly physically disabled, or perhaps your child has suddenly been disabled. Maybe there is a major thing or event that has interrupted your life. Perhaps there was a disaster in your life and you’ve lost everything that you have identified with, and suddenly life has taken that Page 121 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
away. Things have been removed that you considered to be an essential part of who you are. Many times this is experienced through death, divorce, and disaster. I call this the three D’s of life’s inevitable suffering. I understand. I have been there. Although this may bring you feelings of emptiness and nothingness, this unsatisfying form within you can be a gateway into an awakening. Awakening to what? To you without the form. An awareness into the essence of you. And suddenly you will feel a sense of peace. You might ask, how can it happen that someone who has suddenly lost everything suddenly feel so peaceful? Wherever there is great loss in your life there is the potential for the arising of your true essence. This essence is the grace of God that lays on the other side of disaster. It is in that secret place within you waiting to be recognized and loved. It has always been there. You just need to see it. The secret to awakening is discovering your essence identity. The formless you. Who you are cannot be defined in a form or a word. Who you are is untouched by any happening or event. You are essentially the ‘I am’ that underlies all happenings and events. In this awareness, you will not only experience love in everything and every being, but you will recognize yourself as love. And that love is the recognition of God. Azienda Agricola Montefioralle First out is this very small winery next to the small hamlet Montefioralle, Greve in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany. The castle of Montefioralle in the village dates back to 931, and is mentioned for the first time in documents in 1085. The original name of the village was Monte Ficalli. Montefioralle is considered to have been a stronghold in the wars between the city-states of Florence and Siena in the early Middle Ages. Over the years, it has belonged to important

families such as Ricasoli, Benci, Buondelmonti, and Gherardini. Later on, the castle continuously changed hands between Florence and Siena. Today, the village has about 70 inhabitants.The Sieni family owns the Monterfioralle winery. For centuries, the winery belonged to the local parish in Montefioralle, then in 1964 Renato Sieni took over the tenancy of the vineyards and the winery, followed by his son Fernando. Earlier I talked about Lorenzo Sieni, the president of Fisar Firenze. He is the son of Fernando and brother of Alessia, who is currently the primary owner Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
However, in general it is a family run winery. It was only in the 1990s that the church ceded the ownership of the vineyards and gave the opportunity for the Sieni family to buy it. During the Sieni family ownership, they have planted new grapevines, starting to produce Chianti Classico wine.
The winemaking at Monterfioralle The winery is very small with around 5 acres of vineyard and produces around 10,000 bottles a year. As the winery is small and very much family-run, they Page 127 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
oversee the entire production and winemaking processes themselves, paying attention to every small detail. The vineyards are located in close proximity to the winery, on the southern part of the hills next to the village. The Montefioralle area, from a geological point of view, is different than other areas in Tuscany. In pre-historical times it is assumed there was a glacier in this area, thus this would be the reason why there is up to 50% of loam in certain places around Montefioralle. Regarding the unique traits of the Montefioralle wines, they are described as elegant, with softer tannins than other Chianti Classico wines. fruit. In addition, they are also sapid and a bit spicy. The young Montefioralle wines are furthermore considered to be floral and racy.
Their wines The Montefioralle winery produces four different wines as well as olive oil. The standard which is made ofChianti Classico, Sangiovese as the main grape, followed by a small addition of Canaiolo and Colorino. It has a ruby red colour and aromas of mature, red fruit. It tastes also of red fruit as well as a hint of black pepper. It is a wine being aged in oak barrels for 12 months. The Chianti Classico Riserva is produced according to the same set of principles as the standard

Alessia Sieni has explained to me that they only select grapes from vines being 15 years or older and only a smaller amount of clusters from each vine than normally. It is a wine with a deeper ruby red colour and more intense notes of fruit, flowers, and wood. It is a wellstructured and very elegant wine. It is also aged in oak barrels but for 24 months instead of 12 as for the standard Chianti Classico. is made of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, with only a minor addition of Sangiovese. This wine is also aged for 24 months in oak barrels which renders the wine its more deeper and complex flavors and structure. You can feel notes of the typical violet, spices, as well as coffee and cocoa. They only produce around 900 bottles of this wine per year, so if you would be interested in getting a bottle you can contact the winery directly for more details. Last but not least, they produce a Vin Santo del Chianti Classico. Only the white grapes Trebbiano and Malvasia are used to produce this sweet wine. My Wine Story
From Sweden to Chianti From a small town in southern Sweden to the heart of Chianti and Florence in Italy, my journey started in Ystad, which used to be known as a smugglers nest during the Hanseatic Era, while today it is the place where the police inspector Wallander solves crimes. It is an idyllic small town by the seaside. My journey thus started in Sweden, bringing me to Florence a bit more than 15 years ago to do a Ph.D in history at the research institute of the European Union. After receiving my Ph.D. and teaching Modern History at the university for a couple of years, I decided to stay in Florence, changing my career path by using my second degree in languages and becoming a freelance Page 130 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-

The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. During last year, I held smaller informal minicourses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fellow sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firenze. Chimichurri Grilled Tofu with Black Olive Brushetta.
Bruschetta
6 or 7 ripe plum tomatoes seeded and coarsely chopped 1 cup black olives coarsely chopped 1 baguette French bread sliced ¼ cup shaved Parmesan (optional) 1 lb. of extra firm tofu sliced 1/4 inch thick
Chimichurri
1 bunch fresh basil 8 cloves garlic 1 cup extra virgin olive oil 1⁄4 cup red wine vinegar 1 lemon wedge (juice of) 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
Mince garlic in processor. Add basil to chop. Add remaining ingredients and blend.
Top tofu steaks with Chimichurri sauce and allow to marinade for several hours (or overnight). Using a basting brush gently remove Chimichurri sauce from tofu. Save into a bowl. Grill tofu steaks for 2 minutes on each side at 450 degrees. Brush baguette with oil from Chimichurri. Bake at 450 until golden brown. Add half of remaining Chimichurri to tomatoes and black olives mixture. Use other half to drizzle over tofu steaks. Spoon bruschetta over baguette and garnish with shaved Parmesan.

Zika is the name, again another mosquitocarried disease that threatens our health. Another little dangerous enemy, one that has been being talked about a lot all around the world only since February 2016. Opinions of scientists from various countries are conflicting on this insect and the infection it carries, as it always happens when it comes to sudden outbreaks. Since it can't be pretended that this isn't happening at this point, I decide to gather information and to form an a clearer picture of the situation, trying to remain pragmatic as always. President Obama asked the Congress to grant $1.8 billion in emergency funding to fight Zika. We have to observe that until recently Zika had remained confined in a few countries, so no one outside worried about spending money to investigate its threat potential or to find a cure.
Who's Zika? We might describe it as the younger cousin of the more infamous Dengue, Chikungunya and Malaria since it spreads in areas where the Aedes mosquito is present. In 1947 it was discovered accidentally, as it often happens, while some scientists were studying the yellow fever.

Its name comes from the Zika Forest, which translates as "overgrown". This forest is a beautiful natural reserve on Lake Victoria near Entebbe and not far from Uganda's capital, Kampala. That's where the first infected rhesus monkeys were found. Main species that carry infection are the primates, large mammals (hippos, impala, elephants, goats, sheep, alcefali, lions, wildebeests, zebras), and rodents. Over the years, the virus crossed over to humans to and started spreading. The first known outbreak of Zika virus outside of Africa took place in the island of Yap in Micronesia in 2007, but it also caused outbreaks in Sierra Leon, Senegal, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, up to the most severe forms in Brazil with 1.5 million estimated cases in 2015. Presently, though, it appears that it is back on its way to reach a global scale spreading thanks to the travelers returning from infected areas.
The symptoms resemble a mild case of the flu with headaches, muscle and joint pain and mild fever, plus a rash. They can last anywhere from two to seven days and it is estimated that as few as only 1 person out of 4 displays them. It's evident that, since these symptoms have so little specificity and could be found in other infections, the actual diagnosis of the disease is not always easy.

It causes muscle weakness starting from the legs and it can result in paralysis. So far, cases of this syndrome in Zika-affected areas have been reported from Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Polynesia, Suriname and Venezuela. For example, in Venezuela alone about 250 occurrences of the disease were discovered. In Brazil, in the state of Bahia, the number of cases reported in 2015 increased by 19% compared to the previous year, according to WHO sources.

In early February in Texas it was discovered for the first time a case of Zika transmitted through sexual contact. The Dallas County Health and Human Services Department reported that a patient from Venezuela caught the disease by having sex there with someone who was already infected. The virus is carried in the sperm, so it can be spread sexually from man to woman, man to man, but not from woman to woman. But it didn't end there. The number raised and it is now believed that as many as 14 people were infected through sexual contact in the United States. This figure is well higher than expected by health authorities, representing about 15% of the total of infected people discovered in the U.S.A. It didn't take too long and later in February also in Europe the first case of sexual transmission of the virus was discovered in France, where a woman was infected by her partner who was returning from a trip to Brazil. This goes to show how sexual transmission may not be an exceptional and extremely rare route for the contagion, as previously believed. educational plan is necessary alongside with mosquito control. As of now British health authorities have come forward and tentatively issued a guideline, recommending to use condoms for 28 days after returning from an affected area even if no symptoms of the disease appear.
Birth Defects To make things even worse there's an increasing amount of evidence pointing out at the link between Zika and microcephaly, a birth defect displayed by an abnormally small head size. This is accompanied by several other symptoms, including an unfavorable life expectancy. Complications from microcephaly include poor brain development, intellectual impairment, seizures and motor disabilities. As of now the actual numbers of cases connected to Zika may be severely underestimated, since microcephaly's onset may not appear at birth, but later as the child grows. Considering that of the 31 thousand Zika cases identified in Colombia alone 5 thousand are pregnant women, we are sadly bound to discover the hard way if this is one of the consequences of the virus. For these reasons the CDC recommends that pregnant women engage only in protected sex for the whole duration of the pregnancy if their partner is returning from an area with an outbreak.

Infected Blood Transfusions Brazilian authorities confirm that the Zika virus is also transmitted through blood transfusions. In more detail, the University of Campinas State was able to ascertain at least two cases where the disease was contracted this way. The two patients were infected in early 2015. One case involves a patient who had received a liver transplant along with blood transfusions in March 2015. The other one was an individual with gunfire wounds, who tested positive for the virus after undergoing several transfusions and who later died from his injuries.

My Favorite Choices Whenever a mosquito bites me the one thing that I suffer from at the very least is that to get a pus-filled bump for a month at the location of the puncture. Even if there were no serious diseases spread by mosquitoes I should still protect myself. For years I tried and experimented with every kind of remedy in search for the right solution. While doing so, I also caught the chikungunya in the famous and truly beautiful Seychelles. One of the biggest problems I encountered, in addition to the fact that many products were outright ineffective, was also their unbearable smell, sometimes so strong that I had the impression I was getting intoxicated. I think I tried all the anti-mosquito products that are available in three continents. best products available, the most effective and with fewer side effects. My picks for the best repellents against Aedes mosquitoes are: Sawyer Fisherman's Formula Picaridin, which contains 20% Picaridin active ingredient; Natrapel 8 Hours, another 20% Picaridin product; Off! Deep Woods Dry, which is DEET-based. If possible you should lean toward using either the first or second one, since if you apply any of these they will so gentle as if you were wearing a second skin. These two are not greasy like those containing DEET, which although effective tend to leave an oily film that just gets washed off by sweat. Moreover, as per recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Picaridin-based products don't induce negative reactions in the skin and their protection lasts longer than other ingredients. If by any chances you found yourself in urgent need of a repellent and you couldn't find any of those I presented, don't worry. Just pick a product with one of the following active ingredients recommended by Centers for Disease Control (CDC): Picaridin, DEET, IR 3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Application Tips Repellents must be applied only on exposed healthy skin. If you have wounds or skin rash in areas not protected by your clothing you Page 143 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
should cover them with bandages or patches if your physician allows it. Use only the necessary amount of product. Don't spray directly on sensitive areas like
your face or around damaged skin, but use your hands instead to apply accurately. Don't ingest and when applying on children be
careful they don't accidentally rub the product in their eyes, mouth, nose or ears. Remember to clean the skin at evening or
when you are no longer exposed to mosquitoes.
People That Shouldn't Travel Toward Affected Countries Traveling to the countries with the Zika virus is highly discouraged for pregnant women and people affected by diseases of the immune system or with serious conditions.
Before Leaving You can find a list of risky areas for Zika virus at the CDC Traveler's Health Site. Consult your physician if you have to absolutely leave for one of these region and if you have no impeding or aggravating conditions, then take all the necessary precautions and be prepared for the ride.
After Returning When you are back from your trip, even if you don't display any symptoms, you should avoid trying to get pregnant for at least 28 days. If you are a blood donor you should as well refrain from donating blood for 28. Please be aware that these are very broad recommendations that are being discusses right now in the medical community and there's still a good deal of uncertainty, so you should proceed with caution. It’s Women’s History Month

Click Here to Listen March is Women’s History Month. It’s a time to reflect on the women who fought to earn the right to vote, to achieve advanced degrees, and to pursue any vocation we choose. In the United States our fight began hundreds of years ago with women like Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in 1859. It continues with the millions of women worldwide who aren’t guaranteed these freedoms. Today in the US, women between 25 and 29 are earning more advanced degrees than men: 36% compared to 28% according to the latest census data. Though we still have much to fight for, the barriers broken by our great-great grandmothers allow each generation to dream bigger than the last. Page 146 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Millions more women in other countries are just gearing up to fight, to make their own histories. More than 569 million women and girls around the world are illiterate, and resources are limited to help these women gain an education. Together, Central Asia Institute (CAI) and HER: Hope. Educate. Rise., a movement to fund education and empower communities in Central Asia through social fundraising, are working to reduce that number. By educating women and girls in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, CAI and HER are helping girls imagine a future as doctors, scientists, and community leaders for the first time. Drukhshan is one of these future leaders who, with the help of an education, is paving a new path for women in Afghanistan. Like Elizabeth Blackwell, Drukhshan dreams of earning a medical degree. parents are illiterate, these girls may not see the value in education at all. Her school, which consists of two buildings funded by CAI in 2008 and 2009, reports an enrollment of 1,005 students, but review of attendance sheets shows only 835 students attend consistently. “There are many people here who don’t let their daughters go to school, or they let them but they don’t try to understand the value of education,” explains Drukhshan. She tries to encourage them to keep learning. She wants them to think beyond themselves to the impact they will create for their future children and their villages. “I feel very frustrated,” she says. “Even if you are not responsible for yourself or your future, what will you say to your children? You are going to be a mother. At least you can improve the lives of your children so that they can be future leaders of Afghanistan.” Drukhshan is inspired by her mother, who has a basic education, and her older sister, Aalam Gul, who attends a university in Kyrgyzstan to study politics and sociology. Aalam is acutely aware of the impact her education will have on her country.
“Being a doctor is very helpful to people who can’t treat their sickness,” she says. “I want to have a foundation so I can treat people without any fees. I am going to be there in the future. I am.”
When asked what she will do when she graduates she emphatically declares, “Fight for women. This is the only thing to say. Because nothing has been done for women. Especially in this environment.”
Drukhshan’s family has faced dangerous obstacles to keep their daughter in school. She was born in 1997, when the Taliban controlled the government in Afghanistan.
Aalam’s observations about the plight of women in her country mimic the plight of women in the US in the early 1800s. The women we celebrate this month were determined to give women a voice outside the home. Now in 2016, Aalam is becoming a hero in the fight for women in Afghanistan.
“My mother said it was a terrible time. We went to Pakistan when I was 1½ years old.” She explains. “I completed nursery school there. When I came back, I was about six years old.”
“When you see women in Afghanistan, you feel very sad for them and for yourself,” she says. “The situation here is miserable and we do not have a voice, we are not listened to.”
Now 18 years old, Drukhshan has always been one of the top students in her class, excelling in math and working to inspire her struggling classmates. Often their families are not as keen on education, and they don’t receive support to continue their studies. If their

duties. She became a pariah for applying to medical school. She was only admitted to the Geneva Medical College in upstate New York because few believed she was serious. When her application was put to the all-male student body for review, they thought it was a practical joke and accepted in jest. Luckily, Blackwell wasn’t deterred. Throughout her attendance, she worked twice as hard to prove women are capable of enduring the rigors of medical school and becoming doctors. Her fellow students, teachers and patients ostracized her. They held fast to the belief that women should be barred from higher education. Still, she graduated at the top of her class and became the first woman to receive a Medical Degree. Blackwell’s contributions to the country did not stop with her diploma. She opened two clinics to serve poor women and children who did not it.” Page 148 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Drukhshan possesses a similar determination and desire to use her education to improve her life and the lives of those around her. Like Blackwell, she also strives to help those in her village and to be a leader for other women. “We are a very poor community,” she says. “My community people need help, and for myself I also need help. I don’t want to be like this anymore. If I have education then I will have my own money and not be costing everyone else. I want to get educated and be responsible about If the successes of Elizabeth Blackwell and other women of her time are any indication, Drukhshan will achieve her goal of becoming a doctor. for the next generation of Afghan women to earn medical degrees, to earn their own money, and to push forward a women’s movement across Central Asia. In countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, educated and empowered women are a key component of eradicating poverty and creating stability. By sharing what we’ve learned from our own Women’s Movement, we can empower women and girls like Drukhshan. We can create a new generation of women who will demand an education and a better life for their families and communities.

I had the opportunity to interview a woman I admire tremendously and we had a wonderful conversation about how she came to be a woman of conviction respected globally. Nadine B. Hack, named Top 100 Thought Leader Trustworthy Business Behaviour often enough to earn Lifetime Achievement Award in Trust, is CEO of beCause Global Consulting a firm with 33 Senior Associates internationally. She advises Fortune 500 company executives, heads of state, and other leaders and organizations on clarifying their goals and tackling obstacles to achieve them. She’s served as a nonexecutive director on for- and not-for profit boards. She was first woman Executive-inResidence at IMD Business School where she maintains an affiliation. Her pioneering work on engagement leadership and Strategic Relational Engagement (SRE™) within and among entities and sectors improves productivity, profitability and sustainability. CL: What influenced you when you were young and who were your role models? NBH: My grandmother was an extraordinary woman, dedicated to helping others. She immigrated to the US from what was then Russia and is now the Ukraine to escape the Tsarist pogroms. I grew up in a building where our extended family lived, including my brothers, sisters, their children and grandchildren. She taught me that when I went to the bakery I should ask the price of today and yesterday’s bread: then, after buying yesterday’s, I should take whatever pennies I saved and put them in a jar above the “icebox”, what she called the refrigerator, so we could give it to poorer people. I learned from her that charity doesn’t begin when one has material wealth but, is always the right thing to do always. I grew up when the early 1960s civil rights, women’s rights and then peace movements were in full swing. I was profoundly affected by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1963 I Have a Dream speech in Washington DC. I was motivated to help build the “beloved community” he spoke of so eloquently. I’ve been working towards that goal ever since. I also had the opportunity to work with two extraordinary women who, like King, were committed to the dignity of all human beings: Bella Abzug, nicknamed "Battling Bella," and Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman in the US Congress. I met Bella through Women Strike for Peace, and I met Shirley via the League of Women Voters. interconnected, so to eliminate any of these injustices you had to work to resolve them all They reminded me of how when the suffragettes and the abolitionists worked together they had strength that became weakened when the movements fractured. I learned an early lesson about the importance of building coalitions that I’ve continued to do in whatever setting I’ve worked in: the power of the “we” always is stronger than the “I.” This is one of the many reasons I’ve worked so hard to bring disparate people together to better understand each other.
NBH: The TEDx organizers called me “a master bridge-builder” because I’ve worked with leaders from all sectors throughout the world to turn adversaries into allies. We can learn much from King, Mandela, Abzug and Chisholm, but it would be defeatist to think you must be extraordinary like them to be able to form engaged relationships, even with adversaries. My proprietary work on engagement leadership and its unique framework, Strategic Relational Engagement (SRE™), is based on decades of reallife success in bringing together wildly diverse stakeholder to find common ground and achieve great goals.
Decades later, I had the honor to work with Nelson Mandela, who after 27 brutal years in prison, emerged as a fervent advocate of engaging with the very people and institutions that oppressed him.
The story I tell in my TEDx is about how in the 1970s I got loggers to work with environmentalists and government at a time when all three were arch enemies. My first point was: Be honest and clear. This seems so obvious but I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen collaborations fail because people simply weren’t really explicit with each other – or even themselves - about their expectations.
CL: As reflected in your TEDx talk, Adversaries to Allies, what precipitated your understanding of the four points you highlighted; including ‘revealing one's own humanity’? Page 154 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

side the boundaries of what one’s constituents perceive as appropriate, but it always has a direct benefit when people are brave enough to do so. My third was: Offer ongoing nurturing. Engagement is not a one-shot deal; it requires consistent sustenance. This sounds ridiculously obvious, but how many people really invest the time and energy to commit to engaged relationships that are challenging? And my fourth point that you asked about was: Reveal your humanity. Beyond all the many logic-based benefits, it is always the human dimension that really makes anything work. People need to experience that they have more in common than they thought and you can help to create the intimacy that allows ‘bridge building’ to happen. It’s what I try to do whether I’m providing group facilitation or one-on-one coaching. Even people sitting in office cubicles side-byside are often separated by a great divide. I recently gave a talk about engagement to several hundred participants at an international conference. In it, I led the audience towards how they can more fully reveal their humanity even in a one and half minute introduction to the stranger sitting next to them. After my first request to them to do so, many just told their name, where they’re from and what their job is. That’s like the military code of conduct for captured prisoners of war: just give your "name, rank and serial number" right? They’d just revealed the most minimal amount of information about themself possible. I then asked them, “How do you feel now? Do you really know this new person? Do they really know you?” So, I invited them to take a deep breath and go inside. “Think about and/or feel who you really are in this moment. What brings you the greatest joy? What makes you most sad? What excites or intrigues you. Just reflect quietly for a moment: you know what’s going on in you.” And, then I asked them to do it stay connected to what they’d just discovered, turn back to that same person as if they'd never met and re-introduce themselves. As they truly connected the second time around, the changed energy in the room was palpable Page 155 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
CL: Describe your approach to professional mentoring? NBH: I always try to put myself in the other person’s shoes - non-judgmentally – to understand where they are coming from and why they have the beliefs and behaviors that they do. Then, I ask them probative questions that opens the door to the possibility that they can see others that way. I often explain that you can never really change anything on the outside, i.e. what anyone does or anything that might happen. The only thing you can change is how you respond to external behaviors and activities. To do so requires enormous honesty: I recently wrote about this in a piece, Being Self-Aware and Truthful. I have found that self-awareness is the most fundamental dimension for authentic purposeful leadership. Can you to look into your own mirror with clarity and honesty about what examples you are setting on a daily, if not hourly, basis? Are you being open, transparent and do you bring your whole self to the table, including your vulnerabilities and shortcomings? While people’s first tendency is to look for the problems “outside” usually when they switch the lens to internal reflection, they discover truly profound things about themselves – both limiting and enabling – that allow them to focus on what they can change to create the effect or achieve the goal they seek. We’re often told that strength means something very different than this but in my experience it is the strongest among us are willing to be the most candid about their weaknesses. In fact, that very act inspires a deeper level of trust and respect among those we lead. And, in doing so, we also empower them to assume leadership in areas where they might have greater competency than us. This requires a tremendous level of self-confidence; not a phony aura of confidence but a genuine soul sense of what we know, what we don’t; who we are, and who we’re not. In my growth over many decades, I found that in these moments, which I call “sacred intimacy,”

Think about what’s holding you back. Find a small thing you can do differently to start to build new “muscles” in your undeveloped realms. CL: Drawing on your experience, how can female executives put what you've learned into practice and what advice would you offer especially to a young woman just embarking on her own career? NBH: My mantra: be yourself as you can never be anyone else anyway no matter how hard you try! Don’t mimic what we think of as classic male behavior and don’t try to be an idealized conception of what we think a woman leader is: who you are is enough and it’s your unique gift to the world. I work on that and many other things that can make me more present, more trust-able, more my full self. I feel freer each day acknowledging how and where I can grow, while also knowing how to genuinely own the ways in which I am gifted. I continue to search for the space between feeling overly inflated with self -satisfaction or completely unworthy. I’ve become a better leader because of this ongoing self-awareness. I no longer need the external validation, although it’s nice to receive. I can feel it in my bones when I’m facilitating leadership development programs, organizational change management initiatives, one-one-one executive coaching and just in my simple daily interactions with everyone I meet. After I recently extolled a young woman’s impressive work, she said I “stand on your shoulders.” I told her that we were part of a chain that stretched far behind us and would continue long after us. When I was young, I believed it was a sprint and we would change it all right then. As I grew older, I realized it was a marathon and I had to pace myself to be in it for the long haul.

Break the Silence

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), in the United States, a sexual assault occurs every 2 minutes. Approximately Two Thirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. 68% of sexual assaults are never reported to the police. These statistics are staggering. Women and men, girls and boys regardless of socio-economic, political, or religious status have been directly or indirectly touched by this vicious crime that plagues our society. Lady Gaga recorded a song, “Til It Happens to You” for the film, The Hunting Ground. This is a documentary film about incidents of sexual assault on college campuses in the United States. Ten years ago Lady Gaga became a statistic when she was sexually assaulted. She still suffers from daily chronic pain due to this traumatic experience. She broke her silence, and today she is taking a stand with others who have been sexually assaulted. Several other well -known celebrities have spoken out about their experience. Gabrielle Union, Ashley Judd, Tyler Perry, Shia LeBeouf, Sheryl Underwood, and Oprah Winfrey are just a few of the countless women and men who have had the misfortune of being a victim of sexual assault. In my senior year in high school, ten days after I turned 17 years old, my father suffered a fatal heart attack while watering our lawn. He was scheduled to take me to work at Burger King, but as I walked out of the house I discovered his slumped over body in our front lawn. I was extremely close to my dad, and his passing was unexpected and I found it somewhat difficult to process. Eight weeks later, almost to the day of his passing, while working the evening shift at Burger King I had a minor disagreement with a co-worker. I felt I needed to cool off so I decided to walk to the local mini-mart to purchase a pack of gum. This store was on a main street, so I felt I would be safe. I was less than a block away from the store, and I noticed a man in a trench coat walking toward me. I stepped to the left, and so did he. to the right, and he did as well. I noticed he had a gun. Immediately I contemplated running into the street, but I thought I would be hit by a car, and possibly even shot in the back by this stranger. At that moment he grabbed me and walked to a parked car. As we walked tried to get someone, anyone’s attention, but absolutely no one noticed me and what was happening. Thoughts of fear, disbelief and uncertainty of what was to come flooded my mind. I didn’t know if I would make it out of this situation alive. We arrived at a parked car and he forced me in. As I got in I noticed two other guys in the car. I thought, “Wow, this is not good”. The two guys in the car actually appeared to be clean cut and somewhat disconnected from what was taking place. They drove to an isolated place and not only did the man in the trench coat rape me, he forced the other two guys to as well. Surprisingly, when this horrible nightmare ended, they dropped me off near Burger King. As I stepped out of the vehicle, the final words spoken by the man in the trench coat were, “if you turn around, I’ll kill you.” Even though I was dazed and totally traumatized, my first thought was, if you were going to kill me, you would have done that already. I continued walking and I never looked back. The days following were difficult, but by the grace of God, I survived. That night at the age of 17 years old, my life was forever changed, but I decided that I would not be defined by that situation. On April 23, 2016 I will be hosting the 2nd Annual Break the Silence seminar. Break the Silence was launched to provide a safe place for sexual assault survivors to share their story so that healing can begin, and to remind them that they are not alone. It is also my desire to ensure that awareness is prominent in the minds of our community and our world. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and I am committed to educating, encouraging and supporting those who have been directly or indirectly impacted by sexual assault. There really is Hope, Healing, Life and Forgiveness on the other side of abuse. Genesis 50:20 states, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” If you have been sexually assaulted, know that it was not your fault. Know that you are not alone. Know that the Lord loves you and He accepts you. Even though you were violated, your value has not been diminished whatsoever. Believe it or not, it’s based on your perception of you and the experience. You can choose to use it as a stepping stone to catapult you into your destiny, or you can choose to see what happened to you as a road block, totally hindering you from achieving all that you were pre-destined to accomplish. The choice is yours! But I want to challenge you to choose to believe what the Bible says about who you are: Fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14); Made in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:27); Accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6); More than a conqueror (Romans 8:37); Free from condemnation (Romans 8:1); Complete in Him (Colossians 2:10). For years I felt that there was a standard or expectation of me that I should pay attention to as a professional woman. I had

As an entrepreneur and clinician there was no shortage of opinions that not only is the customer always right- but that it is my job to be/do what they need. If I wanted to get paid I would have to BE that for them. If I wanted the respect and recognition of my professional circle I would need to be someone they could and would refer their clients to. I did not look, sound and act as they did. All of the other women in my industry had similar styles, similar world-views and tended to accept others based on these similarities. As human nature goes- it was abundantly clear that I was an outlier and therefore in danger of “not making it” if I did not look,
sound and act as they did.

It can be a disillusioning experience to find yourself standing amongst your colleagues and seeing that perhaps you are louder, bolder, more opinionated…and a bit of a rebel. I became very self-conscious. I chose clothes to wear to conferences based on what I thought my colleagues would show up in, I painted the walls of my office a neutral tone, and I felt that the “image” I was aspiring to would be an asset as I continued to gain favor in the eyes of my professional associates. But I continued to feel as if there was something missing for me…it was me. I had tried so hard to be something I felt was acceptable I had abandoned who I was as an individual. It did not take long before I was questioning what I was doing as a clinician. Not because I wasn’t good at what I did; because I had lost sight of who I was as I estab-

I will never forget being told by an office manager that I was too “sexy” for my profession. That I needed to wear business suits and loafers. So I did. She told me that my hair was too bold and my boobs were too big. That I needed to cover up and get serious. So I did. I dyed my hair black and wore button-up shirts. I looked around one day and came to the startling realization that I was gone. The person who felt the incredible passion to build a company based on my beliefs and follow my dreams was gone. My lack of confidence in who I was led me to avoid speaking engagements, large conference and opportunities to be seen. I did that for about a year before I woke up and realized I was heading in the wrong direction. I had to find and
give the world “me”.

From a business perspective I thought I could solve the problem by finding a marketing strategy that would propel me. Perhaps that was the way to establish my lost identity. Turned out that branding and marketing resulted in the same experience.
I could follow a formula and do what everyone else was doing and maybe then I would become what I was striving for. The real crux of the problem became evident when it came time to write content. I found myself afraid to write! Methe one with the opinions and perspectives that drove me upward- couldn’t bring myself to put it out there on paper (online to be honest). I began to panic at that point- How was I going to be myself in the face of the pressure to perform? Was there any value to the codes I had followed and the formulas others were using?

hope for but a noose around our necks when we are drifting in the surf?It’s been my observation that many professionals and business owners have a “best before date” to their passion. At some point we lose sight of our true north and begin to be pulled by external forces. As I do Force Field Analysis for different organizations and spend time analyzing various leadership styles I find myself including internal issues such as lack of identity, burn-out and distrust to that metric. Internally there is something off. So much so that margins, employees and clients are all impacted. Its time to look deeper. It’s time to look at you. Like my journey, so many women find themselves questioning the relevance of who they are inside of what they do. They peel away the layers of what makes them unique and wonderful in favor of conformity and image. False un-

dry in what you do. It will erode the fabric of your dreams until the YOU that was intended is a shadow of what is possible. From a business performance perspective this leads to the loss of capital inthat the company’s performance is no longer giving high ROI due to a lack of internal consistency between the entrepreneur and their identity. Often I find that the energy people spend trying to find solutions excludes them. What I mean is they look to “fix” instead of “grow”. How do we build strong businesses and exceptional services? The act of analyzing the strategy and execution of the business plan in the absence of the entrepreneur’s identify might feel “safe” but it doesn’t offer any substantial answers. It’s not about being what you “think” you “should” be based on standards of practice and models of other professionals or even the numbers offered on a quarterly report. It’s not about delegating the development of your brand to a marketing company or branding expert or filling gaps by hiring “experts”. It’s about being reflective and honest about how you do or don’t match the initiatives that you are enmeshed in. Do you know who
YOU are and do you value that woman? True leadership is alignment of personal growth and business planning. One of my favorite authors, John Maxwell, talks about the Law of Sacrifice in his book the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. The Law of Sacrifice is knowing that to do great things you must be prepared to sacrifice often more than you anticipate. does “great” is understanding that growing rather than fixing means getting uncomfortable, getting real and shedding the pretense of expectation that industry or we ourselves have used to limit our impact. For myself that sacrifice was the safety net of conformity. It was the knowledge that in order to follow my dream I was going to have to accept that who I was is not what people wanted me to be. It meant that I had to edit my lif and my business significantly. I had to stop listening to those who told me I was too much and too differ-

centered entirely on who I am and what I believe I can do in the world. I knew that branding myself as myself was very risky. It means that I have made myself a consumable. That some people will take a piece of me and tarnish it, misuse it and abuse it; but others will take that piece and cherish it and hold it close because we connected and there is value in that connection. The risk of revealing me is one of rejection, of heartache, of knowing some things just don’t serve me and to let go of that. It’s knowing that according to the Law of Sacrifice I will have short term pain financially, emotionally and even physically in order to shed the expectations that are not empowering. What is revealed then becomes far more centered and powerful. It reveals both my strengths and my weaknesses (opportunities for growth) in such a way that making decisions about who to lean on and what direction to go in is far more successful than if I had referenced my industry standards or the opinions of others. In business and as professionals we must choose where to spend our energy and find our purpose. I would suggest that the most valuable place for you to focus on…is on you.
From that authentic place your values, your strategic plan and your execution of that plan will not just resonate but exponentially respond to you and your market. Revealing you and getting “naked” is undervalued and under-engaged in successful professionals and business owners- they have “arrived”. However, it creates a ceiling for our performance. It allows conformity and complacency to get a foothold. It robs the world of our vision and innovation and ultimately makes our careers a soulsucking experience.

What NAFE Means to Me NAFE mean so much to me- especially at this time in my life. While I am very involved in my career conducting psychotherapy and critical incident stress debriefing, I have other passions such as "Ring Shui" and connecting with other women for mutual empowerment, support, and colleaguial friendship. Joining NAFE has brought me all that and so much more. With people like Robbie Motter, Joan Wakeland, and a growing number of others, NAFE has helped me keep my dreams alive in such a way that I get out there and connect with people meeting mutual interests and needs- and doing it all from the heart in a way that I consistently come home to what really matters- compassion, love, caring, and wanting to serve those I am growing to care about, while have so much more fun than I ever expected to be having with people I met through an association.
