From the Editor and Chief Creative Officer Welcome to the Harvest 2016 Issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. This month we honor female vets and of course the spirit of thanks giving. The theme is “Who’s shoulders Are We Standing On” Before we start this issue and as we approach the conclusion of this year, I wanted to make a few key points about passing into “the New’ or “the next” level of your life. I will equate this concept to the children of Israel coming out of Egypt but not being quite ready to possess the new land. They were out of Egypt but Egypt wasn’t out of them. Their minds, their memory, their being still held the continence of enslavement. Bringing that concept forward, we tend to hold on to trauma during our human experience. It is good sense to remember where and how your “hurt” originated so we avoid it again at all cost. And the hurt we already have, we craftily hide it somewhere in our person or being out of public view. Pain imprints our minds as distinctly as a tattoo and we avoid any similar scenarios that could lead up to another episode. However, when we do that. It’s called masking. We are actually walking around with an injury, emotionally limping in order to not put our full weight on the injury. And with that behavior, we miss a full life-being overly cautious and afraid. In Physical therapy just as emotional therapy, one of the first things the therapist does is get you back into the situation so you don’t set up long term resistance to future similar situations-essentially killing that part of your life. Heal, renew and jump back into life, take the E ticket. Life is too short to be overly cautious and fearful about anything. Engage your life by having one. Alder Finally, my "romance" was about to begin and like a flood it overwhelmed me. A ray of sunshine in life with the prospect of a bright future full of love. All of us have experienced that feeling at least once. It is the same feeling romance scam victims experience at the beginning of these atypical, but exciting love stories. I have to admit that if it were not a scam, the man I had met on the web could have well been my soulmate!
According to Plan "My Scam Fiancé" Profile: Name: Sgt Leonardo Jones. 52 years old, widower with two young children. Nationality: US-UK. Resident in Rockester- Kent- UK. Currently and for at least one more year living at Bagram Military Base – Kabul – Afghanistan.

relationship at the beginning. The difference here is the transformation of the woman, which is suggested and guided by the scammer with a sequence of planned operations. Nothing is left to chance, every move has a clearly defined purpose. The only goal is to extort the largest possible amount of money from their prey. One step at a time, the woman is pushed to focus to what she makes her feel intimately frustrated. Are you tired of the sore throats, the stuffed up noses, the coughs, the alternating chills and fever, and the sleepless nights that make you feel like death? What about those achy muscles? It occurs every year in most parts of North America between October and March, with the peak season usually from December to February.
Lies, Lies and Statistics
Google “influenza statistics” and you’ll get an article in Wikipedia telling you that between 250,000 and 500,000 people die every year worldwide from the flu. This includes 36,000 deaths in the USA. In Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada says the flu kills between 4000 to 8000 people. However these numbers are CONTROVERSIAL because they are ESTIMATES. Estimates. That means that these are NOT actual numbers. They are numbers created
Do you expect to get the flu this year? I’m not joking. Do you expect to get a flu or a cold this year? Every year medical authorities warn you about the flu season. They implore you to get your flu shots. They talk about the dangers of getting the flu in the very young and the very old. Because you likely have young children or are in contact with the elderly, you, a healthy adult, still need to get the flu shot so that YOU don’t infect these other people. Or so the theory goes. There are plenty of statistics about the flu bug and its mortality rates every year.

Much Ado About Nothing Remember H1N1? The beginning of the flu season in 2008 – 2009 arrived with much fear mongering. People lined up for hours at flu clinics waiting for their shots. Governments all over the world stocked up on vaccine. In fact there were more doses of vaccine than there were people! They hoped for 100% compliance, but it was far less than that. The Australians reported that the flu season NEVER reached the pandemic levels that were predicted. But most reports here insisted that there was a pandemic.
Can the Flu Vaccine Make You More Susceptible to the Flu? The H1N1 vaccine actually made people sicker. Reports coming out of Hong Kong and Canada indicated a link between the vaccine and an INCREASED risk of more serious illness. The claims were denied of course. According to the Vancouver Sun: Researchers, led by Vancouver's Dr. Danuta Skowronski, an influenza expert at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, noticed in the early weeks of the [2009 H1N1] pandemic that people who got a flu shot for the 2008-09 winter seemed to be more likely to get infected with the pandemic virus than people who hadn't received a flu shot. Five studies done in several provinces showed the same unsettling results." ABC News also reported on the findings of Professor Collignon from the Australian National University: Some interesting data has become available which suggests that if you get immunised with the seasonal vaccine, you get “less broad protection than if you get a natural infection,' he said. protection against that virus but similar viruses or even in fact quite different flu viruses in the next year.' 'We may be perversely setting ourselves up that if something really new and nasty comes along, that people who have been vaccinated may in fact be more susceptible compared to getting this natural infection.'"
It’s Better to Get Sick What is contained in a flu vaccine is only an educated GUESS. Researchers pick maybe 2 or 3 flu viruses that look like they may have the highest contagious impact and they create the vaccine. If they guess wrong, people get sick. But you may still get sick, because it requires a couple of weeks for immunity to build up. There is a difference between building immunity with a vaccine and building it because you got sick. It used to be said that as you got older, you would actually have fewer colds and flus because you would’ve built up your immune system naturally. So it’s strange that over the years and decades, that you’re now told that the old are more susceptible to colds and flus.
I write so that you will think. Wouldn’t it better if you didn’t have to guess? Wouldn’t it be better if you could take care of yourself in such a way that colds and flus wouldn’t have to be a part of your life? In order to prevent anything, you have to know why something happens. So everyone in modern medicine says it’s the viruses. The problem with that theory is that it is inconsistent. You’ll get the flu as soon as you believe it’ll happen. Don’t be among all the people who become hypochondriacs on an annual basis.

This is true cause and effect. So do something positive and constructive about the things that bother you. Don’t let them fester. Are You Acidic? The body is largely made up of water that transports nutrients, oxygen, hormones and other biochemicals. These are transported all over the body. The potential hydrogen, or pH, is a graduated scale that measures either acid or alkaline (basic) properties. A pH of 1.0 to 6.9 is considered acidic. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. A pH of 7.1 to 14.0 is alkaline. The lower the pH number, the greater the acidity, and the higher the pH number, the greater the alkalinity. The pH factor in the blood stream of a healthy person is just slightly alkaline. You want to maintain the slightly basic pH as much as you can, because a lower pH or a higher pH, over time will adversely affect your health. The body tries to make adjustments but it can only do so much if you don’t make changes.

Dr. Irene Trowell-Harris is the former Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Center for Women Veterans. She was nominated in June 2001 and approved by the White House on October 2, 2001 and served as director until September 2013. In this role, she was the primary advisor to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on legislation, programs and issues related to women Veterans. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Trowell-Harris served as Director of VA’s Office of Inspector General’s Healthcare Inspections Regional Office in Washington DC. In this position, she directed a multidisciplinary staff of inspectors responsible for conducting oversight reviews to improve the economy, effectiveness, and efficiency of VA’s programs. Concurrent with her position in VA’s Office of Inspector General, Dr. Trowell-Harris served 38 years in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard (ANG), retiring as a Major General in September 2001. During her military career, Dr. Trowell-Harris held numerous senior leadership positions, including chief nurse executive; flight nurse examiner; commander; advisor for nursing and readiness, Office of the AF Surgeon General, assistant to the director and Board of Directors, ANG; and military representative to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) for the ANG. She was a 1997 Air Force representative for the Committee on Women in the NATO Forces Conference held in Istanbul, Turkey and speaker for the Air Force in Pretoria, South Africa at an International Women’s Conference. Nora Wingfield Tyson, USN is an American naval officer. In 2015 she was installed as the new commander of the Navyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Third Fleet, making her the first woman to lead a U.S. Navy ship fleet.[2][3] Tyson previously served as the commander of Carrier Strike Group Two (CCSG2), from July 29, 2010 to January 12, 2012; she was the first female commander of a U.S. Navy Carrier Strike Group.[4] She then served as Vice Director of the Joint Staff beginning in February 2012.[5] In July 2013 she was promoted to Vice Admiral and named as Deputy Commander, US Fleet Forces Command. It’s deeply foreboding feeling knowing that world global stability and security are rapidly devolving. Even before the uncanny election of Donald Trump and his unpredictability as the presumed PresidentElect, world leaders were already concerned about increased isolationism, a tipping of the economic scale from the West to the East, innumerably proxy wars, nuclear proliferation, and even the outbreak of another war, ostensibly a Third World War. Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin’s tsarist extremist and expansionist policy, fueled by his highly effective propaganda machine, the ability to use espionage, cyberwarfare, military force and diplomacy has undermined global security. Russia has and is playing an instrumental role in influencing elections both in the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU), while deflecting Page 86 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
attention away from other significant crises and proxy wars, beyond Ukraine and Syria to the Baltic, Balkans and Eastern European Union regions, as well as in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region and the South China Sea. Concurrently, China has effectively used its financial prowess to expand beyond well beyond Asia, into MENA region and the EU, resulting in reliance upon and possibly allegiance to China. Moldova is Russia’s latest conquest. On November 14th it was announced that Moldova’s first national presidential election had been won by pro-Russian supporter Igor Dodon. His opponent, Maia Sandu ran as a pro-EU candidate. Moldova, a former Soviet republic, following 1992 Russian military action experienced a breakaway region - TransDniester – which is now considered a demilitarized zone governed by Moldova, Russia and Transnistria. This, according to Mr. Zannier is a frozen conflict, i.e. a situation in which active armed conflict has ceased without a peace treaty or formal resolution. Trans-Dniester conveniently abuts Ukraine, which has suffered Russian aggressions beyond the illegal annexation of Crimea. Marine Le Pen, who is expected to run against French President François Hollande in May 2017, made the aberrant comment that ‘there was no reason for Europe to be scared of Russian President Vladimir Putin’, when experts, such as Anne Applebaum, have repeated stated that Mr. Putin is working to destabilize Europe which is facilitated when there is a lack of unity. Ms. Le Pen called the U.S. election a victory against the elite. She supports Brexit, believing that all EU members should be allowed the choice to exit or reconfirm their EU commitment. France’s far-right is known to have ties to the Kremlin. Significantly, in Germany, one, if not the strongest, EU leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s re-election in 2017 has already been threatened by pro-Putin fringe group the Alternative for Deutschland (AfD). Presently, the AfD had gained representation in ten of the 16 German state parliaments winning several elections this fall against Ms. Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party. Germany is a neighbor to countries between its borders and Russia that are largely sympathetic to Mr. Putin. In Turkey, a key regional nation and a NATO member, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is disenfranchised once again by the EU, and by exclusion from ongoing American supported military action to retake Mosul, Iraq from ISIS and the similar plans to liberate Raqqa, Syria. Given the atrocities, including human rights violations and suppression of a free press, following the failed coup against Mr. Erdoğan, Turkey will be unable for many years, if at all, to show adherence to Rule of Law; a precursoro acceding to the EU. In the Philippines newly elected President Rodrigo Duterte has been like the shifting sands. Mr. Duterte was elected shortly after the Philippines won a protracted legal battle in the Permanent Court of Arbitration against China over rights to the oilrich South China Sea. After his election, the U.S., along with other nations and human rights groups, criticized Mr. Duterte extra-judicial killings of alleged drug lords. His actions prompted the U.S. to halt sales of assault rifles to the Philippines. Now, Mr. Duterte is vacillating between allegiance to the U.S., a longstanding ally, and China. If the Philippines ultimately sides with China, it would potentially making freedom of navigation in and through the South China Sea more difficult and potentially more dangerous for other countries. Afghanistan, after thirteen years of concerted effort by NATO and the U.S. to create a self-sufficient democratic government free of the Taliban, has been impacted by Russia’s support of the Taliban and is engaging in commercial activity with China, which will ultimately make it less depend on Western aid packages. Pakistan, another critical country, is also doing business with China. The corrupt Pakistani military is engaging in joint military operations with Russia. China’s interest in the region is securing the path critical to its $46 billion “One Belt, One Road” trade route, known as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). CPEC is intended to expand China’s Asian economic and political outreach to Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Iran, among others, as well as providing it with access to a sea route for trade. In Pakistan, CPEC runs from Pakistan’s Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea to China’s landlocked Xinjiang Province. In Afghanistan, the Sino-Afghan Special Railway Transportation, part of CPEC, connects China to Afghanistan. For Afghanistan it is a route by which it may sell its copper. The list simply goes on.

Realizing that speaking and having a voice is accepting with courage your convictions. But where the successful woman power broker probably makes her mark is being understanding, without allowing sentimentality to throw everything off course.

Listening is one of the most underrated skill sets that people possess. So many of the meetings that I attended in my 20 years of corporate career undeniably cross my mind when I discuss the topic of filtering out time wasters. Years ago when I started managing projects, meetings quickly became a major part of my day. Each invitation to a meeting was the validation that I had been waiting for, that I was a valuable member of the team. I got to rub shoulders with clients and senior managers. I was moving up. I was the first to know the latest and the greatest. I enjoyed being a part of the decision making process, speaking up as the go-to person that other attendees wanted to hear from, and learning to anticipate potential issues for future meetings. I figured this was how the best managers made a living â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hours of meetings each day, then returning phone calls and replying to emails that arrived during the meetings, finishing other projectrelated tasks, and going home at midnight or later. Some of the meetings were productive. Many more were an absolute waste of my Page 122 E The Magazine for Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Female Executive
time. Pretty soon these meetings became unbearably torturous and I could not stand them. I started refusing to attend meetings so I could get some work done and go home at a decent time. But I could not refuse all of them. I ended up sitting through many of these time wasters. Just to think that I let my beautiful youth pass by while sitting in conference rooms and watching some of the attendees feeling proud of their own voices while others played Sudoku on their phonesâ&#x20AC;Ś.

In your attempts to maximize your productivity throughout the day, do you ever take breaks to slow down a bit and come up for air? I certainly hope so. This is a vital component in filtering out your time wasters. But what fills up these breaks? Are they productive breaks that truly rest your mind and body for your superhuman performance? Or are you just filling these breaks with more noise and useless complications, also known as time wasters? Meetings become time wasters because they can quickly fill up with routines that waste our energy and empowerment. Gossip, overeating, efforts without a clear goal, worrying about things that you can’t control, insufficient or insincere communication, and useless activities on electronic devices. Such dynamics can completely rob your productivity and passion for fulfillment.
In your attempts to maximize your productivity throughout the day, do you ever take breaks to slow down a bit and come up for air? what deserves your time? How is your relationship with time? Is it strained because there is never enough of it? Is the passing of time hopeful and forgiving? How you spend your time is how you spend your life. Reflect on what it really means to you to have time. Time is the most precious commodity that life offers completely equally to every human being. In order to achieve and manage burnouts and life-work balance while accomplishing high and lofty personal and professional goals, you must use your time wisely. Make the most of your time. So, let’s throw out the distractor factors. Focus on the present moment. Protect your energy in your interactions with other attendees of your meetings. Hashing and re-hashing the same conversation without making a decision, meandering discussions that lead to no conclusions, then more meetings about meetings... crazy! Connect the dots between all aspects of your life this pattern is in your life, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s affecting your life-work balance negatively. Dejunk and simplify. Here are some things that I recommend for creating productive meetings. A. Have a clear objective of the meeting that applies to everyone in attendance. Let them know why they are invited. It is downright shocking how many people attend meetings without knowing why they are there. So they just turn to their smart phone and start playing games. This is unacceptable. Encourage everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participation to reach the objective. B. Create an agenda for the meeting and attach to the meeting invite. The goal here is to help the invitees see the agenda before the meeting, but this does not always happen. Have one master copy of the agenda at the meeting so that every

one can see what is coming up next in the discussion. If anyone blames lack of time for not reading your email, have them review their time wasters. C. Establish a time limit for the entire meeting and each agenda item. Make an announcement at the beginning of the meeting regarding the importance of this time limit. Request undivided attention to move the discussions along efficiently. D. Make decisions! Focus on tangible goals to accomplish before the meeting is scheduled to end. Avoid having to plan for another meeting, if at all possible. Proceed with a decision you can make in the meeting now. E. Do not eat carbohydrates during meetings. bagels, or juice to morning meetings. Some members of your team may resist at first, but deep down inside everyone knows that they will be better without it. They’ll thank you later. This can be your first step to transforming your workplace culture for better productivity. Always have the goal to make your team’s environment to be conducive to efficiency. F. Effective emails can be more useful than meetings. The email thread also serves as meeting notes. Encourage input and participation without flooding the receivers’ inboxes. Good Afternoon Mr.Scharoff, thank you for your time this afternoon. My pleasure Laura. I would like to learn more about the ins and outs of divorce from your perspective by asking you a few questions.
Are you saying infidelity is not a factor in the Courts decision decision? ?
Sure, I am happy to answer them for you. Thank you. What would you say some of the most common reasons are for divorce? I would say people just generally aren't happy. They're not happy with themselves. They're not happy with their spouse. There can be a whole range of reasons. It can be financial. It can be that they've met other people. Just a general unhappiness with the way their life is going. What percentage of divorces are caused by infidelity?
I never keep exact percentages because it really doesn't matter to me what the reason is. What's important to me taking children out of the equation is finding out what the assets, liabilities, and financial pictures are. The exact reason for the divorce, while a lot of people might think that's a big issue, the courts, at least in New York State don't normally attribute fault to one side or the other unless you have what's called egregious fault, something that shocks the conscience. But if it's just an affair, if it's one person wasn't nice to the other person, it really doesn't matter what the cause is, although I realize it's therapeutic for the client to explain why.

Or if it relates to custody matters, and you're not home because you're always out with the other person, that can be a factor. But if all other home because you're always out with the other person, that can be a factor. But if all other things are equal and you just met somebody else, look, it might not play great for the judge, but they really don't care. They just want to move the case along. They have tremendous dockets and tons of cases and not enough resources and they want to clear their calendar. So the court doesn't have the wherewithal to get caught up in he said she said. Is that consistent in across the states?
I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s equally important for the other side to hear why as well because it gives a better understanding as to the reasons why we're sitting at a table or in a courtroom. Are you saying infidelity is not a factor in the courts decision? That's correct. The courts aren't going to care about that. What they might care about is how money is being spent, if there's what's called marital waste perhaps due to an infidelity. Let's say you're going out of town with your girlfriend , boyfriend or significant other, and you're wasting marital funds, that might be something. That I don't know. I'm only licensed in New York. Is it harder to settle cases involving infidelity due to anger therefore causing them to go to trial? It depends on what stage in the process people come to me. Generally when there's a lot of anger whether it's for infidelity, financial reasons, or one party doesn't want to divorce those cases always become more difficult to settle because the litigant is thinking emotionally and not like a business person. you take the children out of the equation, you're talking about a corporate dissolution. What are your assets? What are your liabilities? What's the financial picture? How are they being divided up? If you're going to work off of emotion and principle, that gets to be very expensive and very costly. It’'s not productive to anyone. You may find some attorneys who feed into that and work that way. While those methods can make them a lot of money it does not benefit the client. That’s not the way I do business. I try to ground my clients, because at the end of the day, they're not going to get any more because they're angry. In fact, they're going to get less because it's going to go to the lawyers. This is clearly a highly emotional, lifechanging experience. How do you ground clients who are filled with anger whose choices are fueled by it, and make decisions that are going to hurt them not help them? How do you get through to them? It can be a long ,trying and draining process. You need the client to trust you. They're hiring you for your judgement and your expertise. You have to be able to tell them that by being straight and transparent. If somebody comes in and says, for example, "I'm looking for 90% of our marital assets," generally Page 132 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
I have to tell them they're not going to get that. There are always exceptions to everything, but they're not going to get that. You have to be straight with them, manage expectations, and explain that you don't want to remodel your own house on their case, because then there's going to be less money for them. It's a long process. You try to be understanding, sit with them and work with them. At some point, you need to gently tell them and sometimes sternly that they need to look at the entire picture. You need to look at the forest and not the individual issues. That makes sense. Is the best piece of advice you can offer somebody who is Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

getting divorced to remove the emotions and treat it as a business decision? 100%. Children are a different story. That's the only caveat, children. You can't put a price on custody issues. Let's talk about custody issues. There is definitely a stigma that a mother is naturally awarded custody and that the courts are against fathers. How difficult is it for a father to get custody of his children? In the State of New York, there is no bias. There's no automatic law that mothers have superior rights. playing field. I always tell my clients, you're dealing with judges that have real-life experience and bias. And what one judge might do, another judge might do something different. Neither one is right, and neither one is wrong. But there is not a bias. There's not a legal principle that says women have superior rights for custody over men. In your experience, what has a fathers success rate been being awarded custody?
I can't give you a percentage, I do think there's a trend though where courts are more open to 50-50 time where I think years ago they were not. There's definitely a trend towards there being more equalized time, not just what I'll call a cookiecutter schedule such as every other weekend and one or two dinners during the week. If there's an abuse issue and one spouse has an order of protection against the other , and they have children who were never abused and there are no allegations, how is that handled? Well, it obviously depends which person you are representing. If you're representing the wife who has the order of protection in favor of her, you're obviously concerned about her well-being, and how he would react to the kids. If you're representing the father or the husband, you're going to say, "He's never done anything to the kids." I think ultimately Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
what would happen is an attorney for the children would be appointed. Those are lawyers for the kids. Welcome to America where even kids get lawyers. Their obligation and job is to parrot back to the court what the children want. Obviously, the older the child, the more weight that child's opinion is given. A 4 year old saying something is not going to have the same weight as a 16 year old saying it. If the children haven't been abused by this person, then certainly that would be imparted to the judge. Again, it goes back to one of my earlier statements. Each judge might do something different, and that's what makes in my opinion a lawyer's job difficult because clients want certainty. They're nervous and unsure. It's a very turbulent time in their life. They don't know what to expect. They've never been in the legal system. They're coming to us for guidance, advice and for some type of certainty. It's very hard to guarantee something because again, you just don't know what a judge might do.

and has a conflict, but there's an old adage that if you're going to stab the king, you better kill him, and the chances of getting a judge removed just because you're getting bad decisions are very, very slim. You need to have a legitimate reason and a legitimate conflict, not just that you're getting decisions you don't like. You're not able to judge shop. When trying a case, the results you bring can cause life changing circumstances. As I know from my own experience, you only have so much control over that. I would vouch to say that many think you are a magician, and you have all of the control. What message would you like to convey on your behalf? Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Sometimes there is a legitimate breakdown in the attorney-client relationship and there needs to be a parting of the ways where they then need to seek other counsel. I've been on both ends of this where another attorney has replaced me and the client gets the same deal that I had on the table, if not worse. Sometimes someone will come to me and I'll get them the same deal that was already presented to them. Some people need to hear it from a second or third source because they're just not accepting of it. In a world where we have same sex marriages and adoption, when that marriage ends, and there's a custody battle, having two same sex parents, how does that play out? It's a very cutting edge issue. There's been a lot of recent case law coming down on that topic. The law typically lags behind current trends and this is an example of that. average, but what’s a ballpark figure for an average divorce? It can cost you $5,000 or it can cost you $100,000. I know that's not a very specific answer, but you truly don't know. It depends on the assets that have to be valued, what type of financial discovery there has to be, how reasonable the parties and the attorneys are going to be, and the court itself. What is the longest and most expensive case you ever had? I’ve had some cases going on six years. The cost, I don't know off hand.
They delay things? Yes. Why do you think that is? The courts are the most inefficient business model around. If anybody ran a business the way the courts run their own business they'd be out of business. I think they're overworked. There's not enough judges. The dockets are too big. They're handling too many cases and they can't handle it. It's not the judge's fault, it's the system's fault. Which emotions have you seen run the highest and most intense throughout the divorce process?
Six years for a divorce? Yes Was that the fault of the clients or the courts?
Many. First there may be shock and hurt. Then that hurt can turn to anger. There can also be fear. Disappointment?

There can be disappointment. There can be unreasonableness, unrealistic expectations. Very rarely will people walk out very, very happy because usually there's not enough money to go around for one family when they have two people together. Now you're trying to split that pie in half. I once heard somebody say that when both parties are unhappy with the outcome, that means it was a fair divorce. Would you say that's true?

Yes, people like to say that. Everyone throws that term around. If everyone's unhappy that means it's a good settlement. I think that goes back to having realistic expectations. possibility to visit Vincenzo Scilanga and his winery and learn more about his Gaglioppo wines. Cote di Franze means more or less the ’plain’ of Franze, which is the name of the location where the winery and most of the vineyards are situated.
Cirò Doc
Cote di Franze is a winery situated close to Cirò Marina in Calabria. Cirò Marina is a small town of about 14,000 inhabitants situated a bit north of Crotone in the northeastern part of Calabria, just by the Ionian Sea. It is a coastal town, which dates back to the period of the Ancient Greek settlers who arrived in Calabria in the VII century B.C. Today the town is better known as the Città del Vino (the City of Wine). This summer when I went to Calabria, I finally had the Page 144 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
It is here that the Cote di Franze winery is located, right in the middle of the Cirò Doc district. This is an area where viticulture is a tradition that goes way back in history to the era of the Magna Grecia, as in a large part of Calabria. In fact, the ancient Greeks highly valorized the extremely fertile soil for viticulture that they discovered in Calabria. What strikes you when you visit this area is that almost everyone seems to belong to a family who owns at least a small vineyard, if not several vineyard lots spread around the countryside outside Cirò Marina. Most of the new small organic winemakers that I am writing about from Calabria, have taken over the management of the vineyards from their fathers or grandfathers thus continuing the vine growing tradition. Several of them have decided to turn the wine production from bulk wine to bottled wine at the same time as they stay true to the traditional techniques of viticulture. Two Brothers Preserving a Tradition Vincenzo and Francesco Scilanga are continuing a family tradition that started out around 300 years ago, when their ancestor, also called Vincenzo Scilanga, started cultivating grapes in Cirò. Since then the family has been vine growers and winemakers from generation to generation, which is valid proof of their love for the land and their vineyards. It was this passion that convinced Vincenzo and his brother to continue the tradition as winemakers. Vincenzo is responsible for the work in the vineyards and the winery, while Francesco deals with the more administrative part. They have no oenologist, instead, Vincenzo himself deals Page 145 E The Magazine for Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Female Executive
with the winemaking processes, and he knows his native grape varieties like the back of his hand. When I talked to Vincenzo, he told me about the grafting methods that are a precious knowledge and heritage that has been forwarded over the generations in Cirò. Vincenzo himself learned it from his father and is applying this knowledge in his vineyards at the present day.
From Vineyard to Vinification The vineyards of Cote di Franze comprise 22 acres where the soil is mainly clay, but also contains sand and loam. The clay is what gives the Cote di Franze wines its structure and particular aromas. Here they Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
cultivate the indigenous grape varieties Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco. I have talked about the Gaglioppo grape in several articles, as it is the grape variety with a big G in Calabria. It has a need of sun and heat in order to ripen; therefore, it grows well in the quite dry and harsh soil of Calabria. The Gaglioppo, furthermore, has a thin skin, which makes it very sensitive to rain. The Greco Bianco is also an important white grape variety in Calabria which is used in different DOC wines such as Cirò Doc, Lamezia Doc, Bivongi Doc, etc. It is a grape, which ripens late and is generally harvested at the end of September. Furthermore, Cote di Franze is organically certified. Thus, they use no chemical pesticides or herbicides but only organic substances, such as sulfur and copper, for the treatment of the vines. They use natural yeasts, as low a level of sulfites as possible, and the fermentation and aging all takes place in stainless steel tanks. They do not use any type of oak barrels or barriques for the aging process. The wines produced in this way are indeed different every year, as they are made in a more natural and organic way, which is also the fascinating thing about it all.

of September. They just finished the harvest for this year in mid-October. When I talked to Vincenzo Scilanga, they were doing pump over that day, which means that a certain part of the must is pumped out from the lower part of the tank during the maceration on the grape skins and pumped in again at the top of the tank. In that way, you wet the cover (cappello), which is the marc that has moved to the top, in order to better extract the tannins, aromas, etc. Another process in the cellar is the racking that you can see here. The Wines When I visited Vincenzo Scilanga at Cote di Franze winery, we had a small wine tasting directly in the hangar-like winery building after the short walk around the vineyard. We tasted all of the five wines that they produce, namely Cirò DOP Bianco, Kom'è IGT Calabria, Cirò DOP Rosato, Cirò DOP Rosso Classico Superiore, and Cirò DOP Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva. These are all wines where you feel the terroir and the typical characteristics of the Page 147 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
indigenous grapes. It is as if you drink a piece of Calabria and its culture when you taste them. The Cirò DOP Bianco has a straw yellow color and notes of fruit, such as apricot, and an aromatic touch. It is a sapid and mineral wine. The Kom'è IGT Calabria is a more recent wine that Vincenzo has decided to make, where he is experimenting with spontaneous fermentation. Its color resembles very much an orange wine, with a more deep yellow, orangey hue. It is an aromatic and mineral white wine with a slightly bitter aftertaste. If we then continue with the Cirò DOP Rosato, it is a rosé wine with a beautiful color, which seems like a mix between a cherry red, copper red, and salmon-like hue. Even though I am a big fan especially of the Kom'è IGT Calabria, but also of the Cirò DOP Rosato, their Gaglioppo wines Cirò DOP Rosso Classico Superiore 2012 and Cirò DOP Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva 2012, of course, were the highlights of the small wine tasting we had at 11 am when I visited the winery. Both wines have lovely intense notes of cherry and plums, as well as a balsamic touch and hints of under vegetation. The 2012 is fresh and mineral while the Riserva 2012, of course, also has its minerality and it is also more full-bodied and structured than the 2012. The tannins are smooth and elegant, and even more so in the Riserva 2012.
Visiting Cote di Franze Cirò is a fascinating part of Calabria with the Ionian Sea on one side, the hills on the Page 149 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
other side, and the vineyards covering the landscape in between. Indeed, a large part of the countryside outside of Cirò Marina is covered with vineyards and, as I mentioned before, many of the locals have at least a small vineyard lot where they cultivate some grapes. Vincenzo and Francesco Scilanga's winery is situated beautifully here in the middle of the vineyards with a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape. It is a bit of a journey to get to this part of Calabria, but it is well worth the time spent traveling. Therefore, for those of you who are going to Calabria, you should definitely pay Cote di Franze a visit. My Wine Story My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-

Turkeys 2) Place oven rack on lowest level in oven. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Fold a large piece of cheesecloth into quarters and cut it into a 17 -inch, 4-layer square. Immerse cheesecloth in the melted butter and let soak.
Traditional Baked Turkey Ingredients: One 20 pound fresh whole turkey, giblets and neck removed from cavity and reserved 3 sticks of unsalted butter, melted, plus 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons granulated garlic Cheesecloth Roasting pan Foil
1) Rinse turkey with cold water, and pat dry with paper towels. Let stand for 2 hours at room temperature.
3)Place turkey breast side up, on a roasting rack in a heavy metal roasting pan. Remove the pop up cooking timer that comes with the turkey. It's best to use an instant-read thermometer because it is much more accurate. Fold wing tips under turkey. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon each salt, granulated garlic, and pepper inside turkey. Fill large cavity and neck cavity loosely with as much stuffing as they hold comfortably; do not pack tightly. Tie legs together loosely with butcher's twine. Fold neck flap under, and secure with toothpicks. Rub turkey with the softened butter, and sprinkle with remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, granulated garlic, and pepper. 4) Lift cheesecloth out of melted butter, and squeeze it slightly, leaving it very damp. Spread it evenly over the breast and about halfway down the sides of the turkey; it can cover some of the leg area. Place turkey, legs first, in oven.

Cook for 30 minutes. Using a pastry brush, baste cheesecloth and exposed parts of turkey with butter melted butter. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and continue to cook for 2 1/2 more hours, rotating the pan and basting every 30 minutes and watching pan juices; if the pan gets too full spoon out juices (reserving them for gravy). 5)After the third hour of cooking remove and discard cheesecloth. Turn roasting pan so that the breast is facing the back of the oven. Baste turkey with pan juices. If there are not enough juices, continue to use melted butter. The skin gets fragile as it browns, so baste carefully! Cook 1 more hour basting after 30 minutes. 6) After this fourth hour of cooking, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. Be careful not to poke into a bone. The temperature should reach 180 degrees (stuffing should be between 140 degrees and 160 degrees) and the turkey should be golden brown. The breast does not need to be checked for temperature. If legs aren't fully cooked, baste turkey, return to oven, and cook another 20 to 30 minutes. 7) When fully cooked, transfer turkey to a serving platter, and let rest for about 30 minutes. Slice, serve, an enjoy!

Deep Fried Turkey Ingredients

1 (12 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed 1 (20 pound) bag high quality charcoal briquettes hickory chips or chunks
Directions 1. Place the charcoal into the bottom pan of the smoker. Light the coals and wait for the temperature of the smoker to come to 240 degrees F (115 degrees C). Lightly oil grate. 2. Rinse turkey under cold water, and pat dry. Place hickory chips into a pan with water to cover. 3. Place turkey onto the prepared grate. Add 2 handfuls damp chips at start of cooking, then a handful every couple of hours during the cooking process. Leave the lid on - DO NOT keep looking at turkey, or you will let the heat out! Continue smoking until the internal temperature of the turkey reaches180 degrees F (82 degrees C), or keep going until the coals die out.
1 (10-pound) turkey 2 tablespoons House seasoning, recipe follows 2 tablespoons of your favorite dry rub 3 to 5 gallons peanut oil Cooks Note: To measure the amount of oil needed to fry the turkey, place turkey in fryer, add water to top of turkey, remove the turkey and the water line will indicate how much oil will be needed to fry your turkey. Having too much oil can cause a fire. The pot should not be more than 3/4 full or the oil could overflow when the turkey is added.
Directions Wash bird inside and out, and allow to drain. Rub turkey all over with House Seasoning. Coat turkey with dry rub. Allow the bird to sit until it reaches room temperature. Heat peanut oil in a turkey fryer or a very, very large stockpot to 350 degrees F. Lower turkey into hot oil, very carefully, making sure it is fully submerged. Fry turkey for 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes per bird. Remove turkey from oil and drain on paper towels. House Seasoning: 1 cup salt, 1/4 cup black pepper & 1/4 cup garlic powder. Dressings To save time, you can make your cornbread ahead of time and freeze it. If you don’t want to make your own, buy a pan of good-quality cornbread at a bakery or specialty-foods store.
Special equipment: An oyster knife has a broad, thin, but sturdy and rigid blade. Some have a small hook at the tip to help wedge open the shell. An oyster knife shouldn’t be sharp. The blade has to be just thin enough to insert into the tightly closed shell and strong enough to pop the shell apart without snapping or bending.
Game plan: The heat and time required to safely cook stuffing that’s packed into a good-size turkey usually results in a breast with the flavor of sawdust. The stuffing should be cooked to 160°F, the same internal temperature required for the turkey, so you’d think it would work perfectly. But when the bird is at 160°F and ready to serve, the stuffing (insulated against the oven heat by the bird) is still undercooked and needs at least another 90 minutes in the oven. Which is why preparing your stuffing separately, as done here, is ideal. The cornbread needs to dry in the oven overnight, so plan accordingly.
Instructions 1. Heat the oven to 275°F and arrange a rack in the middle. 2. Using your hands, crumble the cornbread into pieces no larger than 3/4 inch onto a rimmed baking sheet. Spread into an even layer and bake for 15 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the cornbread dry out inside the oven overnight. 3. The next day, transfer the cornbread to a large bowl and set it aside. Heat the oven to 350°F with the rack in the middle. Coat a 13by-9-inch baking dish with butter; set aside. 4. Melt 1 1/2 sticks of the measured butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the celery, celery root, and onion, season with salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 10 minutes. 5. Add the thyme and celery seeds and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to the bowl with the cornbread. 6. Drizzle the stock or broth and the oyster liquid into the bowl and stir until completely incorporated. Fold in the oysters, eggs, and parsley. 7. Transfer the stuffing to the prepared baking dish. Cut the remaining 1/2 stick of butter into small pieces and scatter them over the top of the stuffing. Bake until golden brown on top, about 40 minutes.

Instructions 1.Heat the oven to 375°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Coat a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with butter and set aside. 2.Place the cornbread in a large bowl; set aside. 3.Melt the measured butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat until foaming. Add the apples, celery, onion, salt, sage, and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion has softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the wine, stir to combine, and cook until the wine is almost all evaporated, about 2 minutes. 4.Pour the apple mixture over the cornbread, add the broth and eggs, and stir until combined and thoroughly moistened. 5.Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Roasted Chestnut, Sausage & Cornbread Dressing Ingredients
1 medium carrot, peeled and roughly chopped 1 medium onion, roughly chopped 1/2 bunch fresh sage 1 1/2 lbs loose hot sausage 1 lb roasted chestnuts (peeled and chopped) 1 cup low-sodium chicken stock 5 cups of cubed corn bread 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 large egg extra virgin olive oil freshly ground sea salt and pepper
1. Preheat oven to 375F and butter a 9x11 baking dish. 2. Puree the carrot, onion, and sage in a food processor until you have a fine pulp. 3. Brown the sausage in a large skillet with a little extra virgin olive oil over medium heat. 4. Once the meat has browned nicely and the fat has rendered, remove with a slotted spoon and place in a large mixing bowl. 5. Add the vegetable pulp to the skillet and saute until most of the moisture has evaporated. 6. Season with salt and pepper. 7. Add the cooked vegetables to the mixing bowl along with the sausage, cornbread, and roasted chestnuts. 8. In a separate bowl mix the chicken stock, cream, and egg. 9. Add this mixture to the large mixing bowl, season with more salt and pepper and fold everything together. 10.Pour into the baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the dressing is golden brown. (Tent with foil if it browns too early).

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. In a saucepan mix cornstarch, sugar, and water. Add berries and cook on medium to medium high heat until mixture is thickened, about 15 minutes. Add butter and lemon juice. Pour into an 8" baking dish. 3. Prepare the batter by mixing all of the batter ingredients and beating with a spoon until the batter is smooth. 4. Directions: Preheat an oven to 425ºF. In a large bowl, stir together the peaches, 1/4 cup plus 2 Tbs. granulated sugar, the brown sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice and nutmeg. Transfer to a 2-quart rectangular baker and scatter the butter pieces on top. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the cobbler dough 1/4 inch thick. Tear the dough into 3-inch pieces and place on top of the peach filling. Brush the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the 1 tsp. granulated sugar. Bake the cobbler for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350ºF and bake until the topping is browned, 50 to 60 minutes more. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool for about 20 minutes. Serve the cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Serves 10 to 12.
Apple Pie
Preheat an oven to 400°F.
Ingredients: For the pastry: 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 2 Tbs. sugar 10 Tbs. (1 1/4 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces 10 Tbs. cold vegetable shortening, cut into pieces 7 Tbs. ice water 1 tsp. distilled white vinegar For the filling: 2 1/2 lb. baking apples, peeled, cored, quartered and cut lengthwise into slices 1/2 inch thick 1/2 cup sugar, plus more as needed 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg 1 Tbs. fresh lemon juice 2 Tbs. unsalted butter, cut into pieces 1 egg yolk 1 Tbs. heavy cream
Directions: To make the pastry, in a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center, add the butter and shortening and, using your fingertips, rub them into the flour mixture until small, flat pieces form. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out half of the dough (leave the other half refrigerated) into a 12inch round about 1/8 inch thick. Fold the dough in half and then into quarters and transfer it to a 9-inch pie dish. Unfold and gently press into the bottom and sides of the dish. Trim the edges even with the rim. Roll out the remaining dough into a 10-inch round about 1/8 inch thick. Turn the apples into the pastrylined pan, mounding them slightly in the center. Dot evenly with the butter. Brush the edges of the dough with water. Fold the dough round into quarters and unfold over the apples. Press together the top and bottom crusts to seal, then trim the edges flush with the rim of the dish and crimp to form an attractive edge. In a small bowl, beat together the egg yolk and cream and brush over the pastry. Make a few slits near the center to allow steam to escape. Bake for 25 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F and continue to bake until the apples are tender (insert a knife blade through a slit) and the top is golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes more. Transfer the dish to a wire rack and let the pie cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. Makes one 9-inch pie; serves 8.

Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a generous amount of whipped cream.
Pumpkin Pie Ingredients
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed 1 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten 1 cup half-and-half 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional 1 piece pre-made pie dough Whipped cream, for topping
Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Place 1 piece of pre-made pie dough down into a (9-inch) pie pan and press down along the bottom and all sides. Pinch and crimp the edges together to make a pretty pattern. Put the pie shell back into the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2 pounds) and place it in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to color. For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-andhalf, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated.

Pecan Pie Ingredients
1 cup Karo® Light OR Dark Corn Syrup 3 eggs 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1 teaspoon Spice Islands® Pure Vanilla Extract 1-1/2 cups (6 ounces) pecans 1 (9-inch) unbaked OR frozen** deep -dish pie crust
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Mix corn syrup, eggs, sugar, butter and vanilla using a spoon. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into pie crust. 3. Bake on center rack of oven for 60 to 70 minutes (see tips for doneness, below). Cool for 2 hours on wire rack before serving. **To use prepared frozen pie crust: Place cookie sheet in oven and preheat oven as directed. Pour filling into frozen crust and bake on preheated cookie sheet.

Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. For crust: In medium bowl, combine crumbs, sugar and cinnamon. Add melted butter. Press down flat into a 9-inch springform pan. Set aside. For filling: Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add pumpkin puree, eggs, egg yolk, sour cream, sugar and the spices. Add flour and vanilla. Beat together until well combined. Pour into crust. Spread out evenly and place in oven for 1 hour. Remove from the oven and let sit for 15 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 4 hours.

Stuffed Winter Squash Ingredients 3/4 lb. ground turkey (95 percent lean) 3 Tbs. olive oil 4 cloves garlic, minced (4 tsp.), divided ¾ cup of chopped tomatoes 4 acorn squash, halved and seeded 1/8 tsp. cayenne, plus more for sprinkling squash 1/8 tsp. cumin 3 ½ oz feta cheese 1 ½ oz toasted pine nuts small bunch chives, snipped 1 red pepper, chopped 1/3 cup quinoa ( make sure to rinse quinoa well before cooking)
Candied Beets Beets are a great source of folate, iron, B complex, vitamin A & C, beta-carotene, magnesium and potassium. Beets have a natural sweetness to them making them perfect as an additive to side dishes and salads.
Ingredients 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 3 cups pealed & steamed cubed beets, 1/2- to 1-inch cubes ½ cup chopped walnuts
Endive & Red Cabbage Salad w/Feta Endive is a lettuce that most people do not utilize enough. This cool weather leafy green is most notably known for its high quantities of vitamin K per serving which the body needs to coagulate the blood. It is also high in vitamin A for eye health, the phytonutrient kaempferol, which is being studied for ovarian cancer cell inhibition. Red cabbage has ten times more vitamin A than green cabbage because of the dark pigments involved. It also contains two very important phytonutrients that are essential to eye health and preventing macular degeneration, lutein and zeaxanthin.
Preparation Preheat oven to 400. Place cut squash face down in a 9×13 casserole dish and bake until tender, 35 to 40 minutes. Boil water and prepare quinoa following directions on box Heat oil in pan on medium heat. Add cut tomatoes and garlic until soft and then add ground turkey, a pinch of cayenne, cumin and 1 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until browned. Transfer to bowl and cover. Scrape out baked squashes, forming 1/4 inch thick bowls. Combine squash with meat mixture, quinoa, pinenuts, feta cheese and chives. Divide among squash halves, and return to the oven. Bake until warmed through and tops are browned. 12 to 14 minutes.
Combine brown sugar, orange juice, butter, salt and pepper in a large nonstick skillet. Cook over medium heat until the sugar and butter are melted and starting to bubble. Stir in beets and walnuts and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated and the beets are coated with glaze, 6 to 8 minutes. Serve hot or warm.

Combine equal amounts of endive and red cabbage.

Apple Crisp For the filling: 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons raw honey 1 teaspoon lemon juice
For the topping: 1/2 cup almond flour 1/2 cup certified gluten-free whole oats 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped 1/4 cup raw honey 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Preperation
Preheat oven to 375 degrees In a medium bowl, combine the apples, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 2 tablespoons honey, and lemon juice. Stir together until apples are coated evenly. In a separate bowl, whisk together the almond flour, oats, salt, remaining cinnamon, and pecans. Use a fork or your fingers (it's messy, but effective) to mix in the remaining honey and butter, until the topping has a crumbly consistency. Arrange the apples into a 9-inch pie dish or baking dish. Cover with the crumble topping. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Apple crisp is best served immediately, when it's warm. It can also be served at room temperature. Store, covered, in the refrigerator up to four days.

.Filling 1 Hard Squash Butternut Olive Oil Salt Nutmeg Parmesan Cheese Grated 2 Tblsp mascarpone cheese
Yield: 4 portions Ingredients Amounts
Pasta Dough
1 ½ Cups Semolina Flour Fine Grind 1 ½ Cups All Purpose Flour ½ tsp Kosher Salt 3 Eggs XL 2 Tblsp Olive Oil
Filling, Peel and seed squash cut up into med size cubes toss in 2 Tblsp of Olive oil lay out on a sheet pan and roast at 300 till very soft. Pass cooked squash thru a food mill, grind into a mixer on low add mascarpone cheese Parm cheese and mix add nutmeg and salt to taste and let cool. Pasta dough, sift the semolina flour, salt and AP flour into a bowl, make a well in the center in a separate bowl whisk the 3 eggs till blended. Add olive oil and eggs to center of the well and with your hands mix until the dough well blended, let rest for 30 min Assembly, Rough dough into thin strips using a pasta rolling machine put filling into pastry bag and pipe 2oz of filling about 1 inch apart egg wash the edges of the pasta and between each filling cover with another layer of dough and cut with a ravioli cutter let rest for 30 min.

Risotto, parcooked 2/3 cup or other short-grain rice Caribbean lobsters, (1 ½ lb.) 2 ea. still squirming Oranges, juice of 2 ea. Fish or lobster stock, ½ cup or low-sodium natural clam juice Mussels, rinsed and debearded ½ lb. Sea salt Ground black pepper Olive oil, as needed

Method
1. Preheat your oven (or smoker) to 500°F/260° C, or its highest level. 2. In a wide, metal pan, place ¼-cup of olive oil, the garlic, onion, and celery. Put it in the oven and let cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion softens, 8 minutes. Add the green pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the color brightens and they turn a bit brown.
Chorizo & Sweet Potato Hash
3. Add chouriço, bay leaves, tomatoes, and saffron. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, simmering Ingredients: the “sauce” in the oven. Add 1 lb Chorizo (small dice) 2 Large Sweet Potatoes (small dice) the risotto and stir. 4. Split the lobster from head to tail. Scrape the entrails out of the body and head cavities. Clean the vein in the tail. Crack the claws with the back of a French knife or whack with a meat mallet. (This permits the claw meat to cook in approximately the same time as the tail.) Add the orange juice and stock to the sauce. Place the lobster halves on the sauce, spooning some onto all parts of the lobster. 5. Back to the forno. Cook for 10 to 20 minutes, then add the mussels. Cook for about as long again. When it is done, the lobster tail meat will be firm (not dry—that’s why you spooned the sauce over it). The mussels will be open and the rice cooked through. Add salt and pepper to finish. The chouriço and the natural brininess of the mussel and lobster juice add salt; do taste before you salt. 6. Serve in the casserole dish with big spoons, claw crackers and picks.
Brussels Sprouts

1 Large Red Pepper (small dice) 1 Honey Crisp Apple (1/8” x 2” strips) 1 tbs Minced Garlic 1 Red Onion or Spanish Onion (small dice) 2 Tomatillo (small dice) 1/3 Cup Grated Parmesan TT Salt TT Pepper 2 Oz Oil 2 tbs Unsalted Butter 4 Oz White Cooking Wine Mascarpone Cheese Cooking Instructions: Put a large sauté pan on high heat and let pan get hot. Add oil to pan and let oil get hot. Add your small dice Chorizo and render down the fat aprox 2 minutes. Add the Sweet Potato and let cook for an additional 3 minutes, tossing the mixture about every 30 seconds. Add your small dice Red Pepper and continue on high heat for an additional 2 minutes again tossing every 30 seconds. Add your Onion and Garlic and cook down until onion becomes slightly translucent. Add your Tomatillo and White Wine to deglaze the pan. Once wine is reduced to 1/3 add your butter and mix well tossing until melted. Add your Parmesan by half until you have it at a consistency of your liking and serve. After Plating take about 1 tablespoon of mascarpone per plate and Garnish with a cannel on top of hash. **This Recipe can also be made into a stuffing by adding some Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme and some large dice day old bread at the very end and then baked for about 6 minutes at 400 degrees

Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut off the brown ends of the Brussels sprouts and pull off any yellow outer leaves. Mix them in a bowl with the olive oil, salt and pepper. Pour them on a sheet pan and roast for 35 to 40 minutes, until crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Shake the pan from time to time to brown the sprouts evenly. Welcome back… I trust you had a good month of writing and you enjoyed last month’s article on getting started and using quotes for inspiration. As promised, this month we are talking about “shitty first drafts” like Anne Lamott talks about in her book, Bird by Bird. As I was researching this topic of writing first drafts I found countless authors referencing her work of Shitty First Drafts over and over and over again.

First, a little bit about Anne Lamott. She is the author of six novels, including Rosie (1983), Crooked Little Heart (1997), All New People (2000), and Blue Shoes (2002). She has also been the food reviewer for California magazine, a book reviewer for Mademoiselle, and a regular contributor to Salon’s “Mothers Who Think.” Her nonfiction books include Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son’s First Year (1993), in which she describes her adventures as a single parent, and Tender Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith (1999), in which she charts her journey toward faith in God. and go through the pain of sitting down and writing. In all actuality, by having this belief or mindset allows us to justify not sitting down and writing those “shitty first drafts” at all. I would like to take a moment and share my experience of myself as I sit here working on this article, especially this paragraph alone; that I have modified the paragraph at least a half a dozen times if not more (I am not exaggerating) until I finally have it where I want it.

I have changed the quote, that I ultimately chose to use to make my point on being willing to write badly at least 4 times while finally landing on a quote by Jennifer Egan author of the novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, who won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. She says, “[Be] willing to write really badly. It won’t hurt you to do that. I think there is this fear of writing badly, something primal about it, like: ’This bad stuff is coming out of me…’ Forget it! Let it float away and the good stuff follows. For me, the bad beginning is just something to build on. It’s no big deal. You have to give yourself permission to do that because you can’t expect when you write regularly to always write well. This is when people get into the habit of waiting for the good moments, and that is where I think writer’s block comes from. Like it’s not happening. Well, maybe good writing isn’t happening, but let some bad writing happen… She goes on to day that when she was writing The Keep, my writing was so terrible. It was God-awful. My working title for that first draft was, A Short Bad Novel. I thought; ’How can I disappoint?’” [Sic]

A friend of mine says that the first draft is the down draft -- you just get it down. The second draft is the up draft -you fix it up. You try to say what you have to say more accurately. And the third draft is the dental draft, where you check every tooth, to see if it's loose or cramped or decayed, or even, God help us, healthy.” I really believe that we forget that no one is going to see these rough drafts except for ourselves, not our editors, not the public so there is no way for us to be judged, except for ourselves or in most cases our Page 176 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
own egos. I believe the core issue is we don’t want anyone to see us at one of our most vulnerable times while we are standing there “naked and struggling” to put two sentences together let alone two thoughts together in order to express our ideas succinctly. For some novice authors they feel this is a license to “give up” and stop writing because they think that their writing isn’t any good. Instead of looking at it as an opportunity to stop writing, look at it as Cory Doctorow does, author of With a Little Help, For the Win, Makers, and Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, “. . . You can’t tell if what you’re writing is good or bad while you’re writing it.” He goes on to say, “Write when the book sucks and it isn’t going anywhere. Just keep writing. Your conscious is having a panic attack because it doesn’t believe your subconscious knows what it’s doing.” No matter how painful it may seem at first, I believe courage and faith is what one needs to get through that first draft. I think when we start, what’s really going on is that we don’t believe or have faith that by the end of whatever we are writing will actually come together into a cohesive manuscript regardless of whether it’s an article, a blog or a book. really know where I am going with my writing including this article until I have done it. Then, it is almost like magic that it all comes together in the end. I find it calmly reassuring for me that so many authors turn to Anne Lamott in her discussion of Shitty First Drafts, to give themselves permission to not know where they are going; “Very few writers really know what they are doing until they've done it. Nor do they go about their business feeling dewy and thrilled. They do not type a few stiff warm-up sentences and then find themselves bounding along like huskies across the snow . . . The right words and sentences just do not come pouring out like ticker tape most of the time.” As author Anne Enright who has published novels, short stories, essays, and one nonfiction book to include, A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and her novel The Gathering, which won the 2007 Man Booker Prize says; “The way to write a book is to actually write a book. A pen is useful, typing is also good. Keep putting words on the page.” I know for me if I put enough words on the page, soon enough they will start to unravel and begin to magically move into a sequence that makes sense by creating a sequence of continuity. Navigating The Holidays Etiquette Tips For A Smoother Holiday

Once November hits we start thinking about the upcoming holiday season. For some of us that is exciting and for some of us we associate it with a fair amount of stress. Some of us are very excited to take our china out once a year and plan a full holiday meal and put up holiday decorations. Some people simply choose to go away for some of the holidays so they don’t have to host company or holiday meals and can avoid family conflict.
No matter which religion you practice (or don’t) there are some common threads that getting ready for the holidays involve.

Table Settings What if I don’t own china or have enough nice dishes for a full table to set but I want to host Thanksgiving at my place this year?
China is beautiful but not necessary in my opinion. Perhaps we registered for china if we are married and feel like we have to use it. It is often passed down as an heirloom and has sentimental value too. Table settings can range from one plate for the main course and one plate for dessert to multiple plates and courses. It is perfectly acceptable to assign guests different dishes to bring. many courses you are serving so you have an idea of the quantity you will need to buy before you get to the store.
Thanksgiving can be a great time to teach your children to set the table if you have not done this yet.
It is also a good time to explain why you use different sized forks and spoons with fancier meals. Sometimes adults don’t know the differences either.
Table Decorations
Some people like to place name holders at individual seats so people know where to sit. This can also be very helpful with holiday events where there are divorced parents with both in attendance. These can also be helpful if you are trying to mix up the ladies and the men and the children. Making the placeholders can also become a great art project for children prior to the holiday if they are seeking a way to be involved in the day’s planning and events. Putting flowers or holiday themed decorations out at the table gives a very festive look. Candles are also a great addition if young children are not present. For a guest coming that is very craft oriented they may have a field day making some holiday decorations, but be specific on what you are asking them to do. Make sure you will have room at the table for decorations before putting too much thought into it. Invitations Request an R.S.V.P. with a specific date on the invitation whether it is sent in the mail or electronically. As the host you need an accurate head count. Hosting In-laws or Your Own Parents
Holiday Arguments A holiday meal is not the time for divorced couples to discuss issues. If there is business that needs to be taken care of then find a way to approach this before or after Thanksgiving so everyone can enjoy the day!
If you and your spouse or significant other differ on how to handle conflict with company around figure it out early in your relationship. A quarrel with your mate can make a special day go south.
If you have issues with your own child(ren) be careful to pick your battles and really limit it on the holiday. You all want to have happy memories later on.
Don’t draw a third party into your issue. If you need to vent to make it through the day
then go outside far away where no one can hear.
I have a brother-in-law that I adore. He told me many years ago that after three nights house guests can smell like fish (meaning that 3 nights is the perfect amount of time for a visit). If guests are traveling a far distance it is o.k. to also consider the option of a hotel for a portion of the visit even though this may be uncomfortable to introduce.
Set a timeline for the visit before you
make the invite. Choose this timeline very carefully with your spouse or significant other. If your houseguests have airline tickets they will not be leaving early. Have an activity planned each day. Even if the event is an afternoon card game or scrabble game or taking the Grandkids to the park, it will give everyone something to look forward to and offer some structure.
Take out food for dinner some nights of the visit is A o.k. You do not have to cook for your
company very night nor should you be expected to. Your parents or in-laws should at least offer to pay for the take out food or eating out. Have some good movies on hand for watching at night after dinner. Keep up your regular exercise routine if you have one. Your houseguests will understand and you will need the break and mental release. Encourage your houseguests to take a walk weather permitting so you can get some time alone in your house. Allow and encourage in-laws to get involved. Everyone wants to feel needed. No one wants to feel like they are a burden. And, you may really need an extra set of hands if you are the host. If you have children this is a good opportunity for you to get a date night out while the Grandparents watch the kids for a couple hours (if they are able to do this). It also gives special bonding time for the Grandparents and grandchildren. You may need to bring this idea up….. If there is a real issue brewing in the house let the actual son or daughter of the In-laws be the one to deal with it.

Hostess Gifts Do not under any circumstances show up for Thanksgiving dinner without a hostess gift or a dish for the meal (even if you ask the host what you can bring and they say “just yourself.”). If you want to contribute a dish to the meal ask the host or hostess in advance what you can contribute towards the meal so you are not duplicating. Great hostess gift recommendations are:

napkins for the bathroom (especially during the cold and flu season this is a great gift)

If it is a food item make sure it is new and fresh. Thanksgiving reminds us to be thankful for what we have. Putting some advance planning into the holiday season and sharing some of the ideas in this article with your extended family can make the day special for everyone!

What One man Did On His Vacation 76 Years Ago Your Executive Skills CAN Change the World By Althea Ledford Born in 1909 to German Jewish parents, Winston, initially named Wertheim, was born. A normal Jewish childhood with the exception of the family converting to Christianity at the time they migrated to London. In 1923, Winton entered Stowe School, which had just opened. He left without graduating, attending night school while volunteering at the Midland Bank. He then went to Hamburg, where he worked at Behrens Bank, followed by Wasserman Bank in Berlin. In 1931, he moved to France and worked for the Banque Nationale de Crédit in Paris. He also earned a banking qualification in France. Shortly before Christmas 1938, Winton was planning to travel to Switzerland for a skiing holiday. He decided instead to visit Prague and help his friend Martin Blake, who had called to ask him to assist in Jewish welfare work. Winton single- handedly established an organization to aid children from Jewish families at risk from the Nazis. He set up his office at a dining room table in his hotel in Wenceslas Square. In November 1938, following the Kristallnacht in Nazi-ruled Germany, the House of Commons approved a measure to allow the entry into Britain of refugees younger than 17, provided they had a place to stay and a warranty of £50 was Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
An important obstacle was getting official permission to cross into the Netherlands, as the children were destined to embark on the ferry at the Hook of Holland. After the Kristallnacht in November 1938, the Dutch government officially closed its borders to any Jewish refugees. The border guards (marechaussee) actively searched for them and returned any found to Germany, despite the horrors of Kristallnacht being well known. (From the border, the synagogue in Aachen could be seen burning just 3 miles away). Winton succeeded, thanks to the guarantees he had obtained from Britain. After the first train, crossing the Netherlands went smoothly. A Dutch woman, Gertruida Wijsmuller-Meier saved another 10,000 Jewish children, mostly from Vienna and Berlin via the Hook, though it is not known

(In 2012, a statue was erected on the quay at the Hook to commemorate all who had saved Jewish children.) Winton found homes in Britain for 669 children, many of whose parents would perish in Auschwitz. Winton's mother worked with him to place the children in homes and later hostels. Throughout the summer, Winton placed advertisements seeking families to accept them. The last group of 250, scheduled to leave Prague on 1 September 1939, did not reach safety. Winton sought registration as a conscientious objector and served during the war with the Red Cross, but in 1940 he rescinded his objection to join the Royal Air Force, Administrative and Special Duties Branch. He was initially an airman, rising to sergeant by the time he was commissioned on June 22, 1944 as an acting pilot officer on probation. He was later promoted to pilot officer on probation and then war substantive flying officer. He relinquished his commission on 19 May 1954, retaining the honorary rank of flight lieutenant. It contained lists of the children, including their parents' names, and the names and addresses of the families that took them in. By sending letters to these addresses, 80 of "Winton's children" were found in Britain. At one point Winton's scrapbook was shown, and his achievements explained. The host of the program, Esther Rantzen, asked whether any in the audience owed their lives to Winton, and, if so, to stand â&#x20AC;&#x201C; more than two dozen people surrounding Winton rose and applauded. In the 1983 Queen's Birthday Honors, Winton was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his work in establishing the Abbeyfield homes for the elderly in Britain, and in the 2002 New Year Honors, he was knighted in recognition of his work on the Czech Kindertransport. He met the Queen again during her state visit to Bratislava, Slovakia in October 2008. In 2003, Winton received the Pride of Britain Award for Lifetime Achievement. Reatha Reedus., Nafe Member and a Multi Talented Women I first meet Reatha Reedus 6 years ago when I joined the GFWC Menifee/Sun City Women’s Club. In 2012 Reatha also became a member of my Menifee Nafe (National Association of Female Executives) group. Reatha totally has a heart for volunteering something she has been doing her entire life. She has been active in countless organizations and projects over the years some she started because she saw a need. She has mentored small business owners, volunteered for the Temecula Valley Senior Citizens Center and Food Bank, supported the Arts and developed “Going Red for Healthy Hearts”, a community summit highlighting and educating the public on heart disease in women. I had the opportunity to work with her on one of the Go Red projects along with her beautiful and talented daughter, Dr Desiree Reedus, a cardiologist, who currently is in Indiana heading up the Urgent Care department at the VA Hospital where she serves our Veterans in need. For many years Reatha served as the chair of various committees for the Temecula Film Festival, where she initiated a program encouraging seniors and those with disabilities to partake in the festival activities. One her projects with the Film Festival was designing and hosting Hospitality Suites for the film makers. She for many years also chaired the Arts and Partnership Committee for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in The DeAnza District. As a member of the Riverside Women’s Club she and her daughter Dr. Desiree Reedus started the “Doctors Corner” with first year students assigned by the Dean from the first Medical School in Riverside. They have the opportunity to be mentored by Dr. Reedus and also gained valuable knowledge from the many members of the Riverside Women’s Club. Reatha is also amazing at decorating, many times I have asked her to take that unique talent to help me with events I was chairing like the GFWC Menifee/ Sun City Women’s Club Tea, many Nafe projects and last year I asked her to help me with the help of others to decorate the stage for the Temecula Valley Symphony Christmas Concert, which looked amazing. She has helped decorate numerous Nafe Conferences over the years as well and people are always in awe as how beautiful things look. MBA from Claremont Graduate College. She currently resides in Temecula, California where she has been a long time resident and very active in many community activities and events. She is the oldest of 7 children 2 boys and 5 girls. Her hobbies are all types of art, which includes painting, ceramics, sculpturing and a variety of crafts, she has a knack to create beautiful things. Over the years she has won many awards, one of her latest was the Soroptomist Club Women of Significance Award and the President of the United States Call to Service Award for her over 4,000 hours of community service. She has received many awards from State and local government agencies as well. She continues to help the GFWC Riverside Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club with other projects including their English Tea schedule for November. She is also a total support to the Menifee Nafe Network where she is also a member. Reatha is certainly the person you want on your Team no matter what project you are doing, I know I love it when she is part of my team on the numerous projects I get involved with.

What Does NAFE Mean to Me When I joined the Riverside Chapter of NAFE, I believe although the intent may have been to connect and network with other professional women, I did not expect the profound personal relationships I have developed. Nafe has provided an extension of myself that I was seeking to cultivate and expand. The experiences and encounters with each of the ladies have been and is actively influential in my life and I in theirs. This network offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encourages me to continue my interactions. The connections I have developed provide intense private and excellent business relationships that have allowed me to grow and be of service to those I come in contact with. The training and the speakers that are available has increased my knowledge and the potential to excel while focusing on specific areas of business and life Nafe Riverside Network is the perfect organization that allows women, such as myself to come together, motivate each other and offer reciprocal help and assistance one to another. It has enhanced my life in ways that have helped me give of myself without feeling used or abused. The supplementary leadership skills attained have given me the ability and opportunity to reach out to women of all ethnicities, economic and social diversities, meeting their needs and providing insight into any given situation.
