all Indians,” the Times said. While Modi, it noted, had “expressed concern over the Islamic State, he did not sign up for the coalition led by the United States. “And there was no mention of solutions on the differences with Washington on Ukraine and Iran.” “Estranged during the Cold War, India and the United States have much to gain from collaboration,” the Times said. “The coming months will show whether Mr. Obama and Mr. Modi can turn aspirations of ‘strategic partnership’ into reality,” it said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 7 (AGENCIES): The Central Bureau Investigation has dismissed any foul play in the death of former Cabinet Minister Gopinath Munde’s death, as per reports on Tuesday. CBI had taken over the probe into the death of BJP leader Gopinath Munde following a road accident in Delhi. The home ministry recommended handing over of the case to the agency after a number of political leaders demanded a CBI probe into the fatal accident of Munde, who had taken charge as the Rural Development Minister in the Narendra Modi government. Sixty four-year-old Munde, a popular backward class leader from Maharashtra, was on his way to Indira Gandhi Airport on June 3 when his car was hit by another vehicle at the Prithviraj Road-Tughlak Road roundabout in the heart of the national capital. Munde died due to shock and haemorrhage following injuries to his neck and liver in the road accident. Delhi Police had registered a case against 32-year-old Gurvinder Singh, the driver whose car hit Munde’s vehicle. BJP leaders from Maharashtra, including former party president Nitin Gadkari, had sought a CBI inquiry into Munde’s death. Munde’s daughter and MLA Pankaja Munde Palve had in a statement urged the deceased leader’s supporters not to fall prey to those trying to make political capital out of the tragedy. “I have spoken to (party leaders) regarding the CBI inquiry and I trust Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tensions rise as Indian, Pakistani armies clash

JAMMU, OCT 7 (IANS): Indian and Pakistani troops clashed again Tuesday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, sparking fear at the border and forcing thousands to flee to safer places. Defence ministry spokesman Colonel Manish Mehta told IANS that the Pakistan Army used small arms to fire at Indian positions in Balnoi sector in Poonch district. “The firing started at 2.20 p.m. And it is still going on. Our troops have effectively retaliated,” he said. There were no fresh casualties on the Indian side. The latest violation of the 2003 ceasefire along the Jammu and Kashmir border has sparked fresh tensions along the border. Indian officials have said an estimated 20,000 people have fled their homes in border areas. In Islamabad, Pakistan registered a protest with the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) over the firing by the Indian military. The UN group would visit the affected areas, Geo News quoted the Pakistani military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) as saying. India said five Indian civilians were killed in heavy firing by the Pakistani military

Monday. Pakistani officials said the Indian firing has left four civilians dead. The Pakistan Army had Monday too violated the truce. The paramilitary Pakistan Rangers have also targeted Border Security Force (BSF) as well as civilian positions on the border in the last two days. For the first time, the Rangers and BSF failed to exchange sweets on the border Monday on the occasion of Eid. On Tuesday, BSF Director General D.K. Pathak visited the border outposts of the BSF in Jammu and Samba districts. Three civilians were injured overnight on the Indian side in firing and mortar shelling by Pakistani forces, police said Tuesday. “Three civilians were injured in Arnia town,” a senior police officer told IANS in Jammu. He added that the BSF hit back at the Pakistan Rangers. The firing, which again started between the Rangers and the BSF Monday evening, continued Tuesday in Arnia, Pargwal, Kanachak, Ramgarh and other places in Jammu and Samba districts. Thousands of villagers from the border areas of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts have fled their homes and moved into makeshift

camps. Journalists who visited the border villages were told that the Pakistani firing was “very heavy”. BSF officers say that Pakistani forces have intensified attacks on Indian border posts in a desperate bid to give cover to Islamist militants trying to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir. But Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah denied this, telling CNN-IBN channel that the real reason for the turmoil on the border was the internal situation in Pakistan. “This Pakistani provocation has nothing to do with attempts to infiltrate militants into Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah said. “It is all due to the internal situation in Pakistan,” he said, referring to the unending tensions between the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the opposition. “Sharif is trying to deflect attention from his internal crisis,” he said. Abdullah said the Pakistani aggression was a major challenge to the Modi government and simply lodging a protest with Islamabad won’t do. Home Minister Rajnath Singh Monday warned Pakistan to stop violating the ceasefire, saying “times have changed in India”.

20 Maoists lay down arms in Chhattisgarh RAIPUR, OCT 7 (PTI): The counter-insurgency operation of Chhattisgarh police today got shot in the arm when 20 Maoists, most of them carrying rewards on their head, surrendered at separate places of Bastar region. With this, the total number of rebels laying down arms has reached to nearly 280 this year in the state. Twelve Naxals, including three women, surrendered before senior police and BSF officials in Kanker district, citing atrocities on tribals and sexual exploitation of local women by senior cadres, Kanker Superintendent of Police RN Dash told PTI. The Naxals who surrendered included military platoon-17 commander Somnath Kawre, carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head, Korar local operation squad commander Rajnu Gota and others, all between 20 and 40 years, the SP said. Kawre was involved in Chinpar ambush in which 3 CRPF jawans were killed, Kalighat encounter injuring two CRPF jawans, killing of three police personnel in Mahamaya mines in 2008, killing two BSF jawans in Etabalka Ambush in 2010 and other deadly attacks, the SP said, adding that he also extorted money from tendu leaves contractors. “Senior Naxal leaders sexually exploited several tribal girls and if they got pregnant, the rebels allegedly forced them to undergo abortion. If the girls refused to do so they were killed. The Naxal leaders were also involved in extortion from poor tribals and local traders,” he said quoting the statements of the cadres.

WASHINGTON, OCT 7 (IANS): Suggesting that US President Barack and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi infused “new energy” into their stalled bilateral relationship, the New York Times wonders whether they can turn aspirations of “strategic partnership” into reality. Obama and Modi “have done the minimum needed to infuse new energy into a bilateral relationship that had run aground,” the influential US daily said in an editorial titled “India and America, Beginning Again.” But “to address the challenges before them, including a rising China,” it said, they “are going to have to work harder, so relations don’t atrophy or become more strained.” Economics is a priority, the Times said, and “American businesses are eager to cash in on Modi’s invitation to help India, the world’s secondmost-populous nation, meet its defense, infrastructure and power needs.” “The two leaders plan to speed things along with
