Governor roots for skills over academics

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JAN 13 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya on Friday stressed on the need to equip oneself with skills, saying mere qualification or degree was not a prerequisite for success. “The existing conventional education system has become redundant. Anyone can become an asset if equipped with skills,” he said while speaking at the inaugural function of the three-day national conference on ‘Advances in Indian Horticulture with Focus on North East & Hill Region’ at Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, jointly organised by CIH, Indian Society of Ornamental Horticulture (ISOH) and Department of Horticulture Nagaland. Acharya was also critical of the education system/institutions which, according to him, were merely churning out “unemployable” graduates. He therefore called for major reforms in the educational system where institutions would impart skills and empower students to be assets for the society.

The governor also remarked that Nagas were “not prepared to work hard,” despite the abundance of natural and human resources in the state. “Only Nagas can develop Nagaland,” he stated while calling for a change in mindset. According to Acharya, for a society to progress, citizens should first learn to be humans. A person has three identities-- human being, citizen of a country and profession-- and that one should assume his identity in that order, he added.

Acharya lauded the institute and the department of Horticulture for their efforts and urged them to perpetuate the good work. Also dwelling on the role of civil societies and student organisations, the governor maintained that instead of staying engrossed in politics they should have an agenda for growth and development. Earlier, Acharya inaugurated the three-day exhibition in the campus where florists and entrepreneurs from across the country had set up stalls.

He, along with other dignitaries, also launched the skill development course, released the publication and handed out awards to nursery owners from Nagaland and Assam. Shillong, Jan 13 (Agencies): With an aim of finally nabbing the commander–in–chief of ASAK, Reding T Sangma, Mehalaya Police has promised a 2 lakh reward to anyone who can provide information which will lead to his arrest. “Any person who provides any information which leads to the apprehension of Reding T. Sangma will be rewarded in cash a sum of Rs. 2 lakh by the office of the Superintendent of Police, South Garo Hills”, said the Superintendent of Police, South Garo Hills (SGH) district, Anand Mishra on Thursday. Even as other militant organizations such as the GNLA remaining dormant of late, ASAK has been unleashing terror especially in SGH district. It may be reminded here that three traders from Dalu were abducted by criminal gangs from Telekhali reserve forest near Dumnikura village,

along the India-Bangladesh border on Tuesday. The SGH districthas proven to be a difficult area of operations for police as it consists of dense forest, poor road communication and close proximity to Bangladesh which have all added to the advantage of the militants operating there. In 2014 Meghalaya police had announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of 10 “most wanted” militants mostly based in the Garo hills. These most wanted militants mostly belonged to the GNLA and have since either been killed or have surrendered. In 2016, the GNLA deputy commander in chief Rupanto Marak and area commanders, Baichung Ch. Momin and Rakban D. Shira, amongst others had surrendered. These men were among those labeled as “most wanted” by the police.

Its security arsenal included state-of-art bulletproof jackets, headgears, vehicles, night vision cameras, dragon-lights among other classified devices. In what could only be described as extra preparation of the state police for possible disruption of peace with separatist demands like Tipraland gaining ground, an order was placed for providing bullet-proof vehicles worth Rs 68 lakh. A senior of the state police confirmed the information this evening and said the vehicle would be delivered in a day or two. Will do surgical strikes again if needed: Rawat NEW DELHI, Jan 13 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : A r my Chief General Bipin Rawat Friday again asserted that the surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) into Pakistan can be repeated if the “situation warrants”. “Surgical strikes were a demonstration of what we can do if situation warrants. Will do it again if needed,” said Rawat at a press conference in Delhi. Addressing his first press conference after taking over as Army Chief, Gen Rawat said, “In the recent time the ceasefire violations have come down but if not then, we may resort for such surgical strikes again.” “Infiltration attempts are being regularly made, the day before yesterday two terrorists were killed along the Line of Control in Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir),” Rawat said. However, “with synergised efforts of secu-

Gen Bipin Rawat rity forces, we have been able to bring the situation under control in Jammu and Kashmir,” Gen Rawat added. Explaining the possibility of more surgical strikes, the army chief said that at the first place we should understand why were the strikes conducted in September last year. “The motive behind surgical strike needs to be understood...if we don’t get the correct message from the other side, if we see that infiltration is being encouraged then it (surgical strike)

must be conducted again,” he stressed. Commenting on the broader issue of security challenges faced by the country, Gen Rawat said, “While we have challenges along our borders, we have to be concerned about proxy war, terror that are affecting the secular fabric of our nation.” Gen Rawat also confirmed that Pakistan military authorities have committed to the release Indian soldier Chandu Chavan, who inadvertently strayed across the border on September 30 last year. “Pak has given assurance that he is with them. There are procedures in soldier repatriations and it will be followed,” he said. The army chief also said that soldiers must raise their complaints internally, referring to recent videos of a BSF jawan complaining about poor food and near starvation.

Centre moves SC for lifting ban diesel vehicles New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI): The Centre Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking lifting of the ban on 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi and NCR, saying it was affecting the economically weaker section of people. A bench of justices M B Lokur and P C Pant asked Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi about the status of a similar petition challenging the ban imposed by the NGT. The Attorney General said, “that petition has been dismissed by the apex court.” To this, the bench sought to know about the records regarding that petition and asked the AG on what ground it was dismissed. The apex court said that government should not take a casual approach when it is talking about economy and other things. Rohatgi sought time from the bench to file the relevant record regarding the dismissed petitions and said that due to the ban, poorer section of the people is being affected.

Row over Modi’s pic on khadi calendar, diary

New Delhi, Jan 13 (Agencies): A controversy erupted today over Narendra Modi’s photo appearing on the diary and the calendar of Khadi and Village Industries Corporation (KVIC), with Congress and some others targeting the Prime Minister, whose office

termed the row as “unnecessary”. A section of KVIC has protested the exclusion of Mahatma Gandhi’s photo from the diary and the calendar even though they have no objection to Modi’s picture appearing in these. “The Mangalayaan ef-

PMO sources said in the past also, there was no picture of Mahatma Gandhi on such KVIC material. “In the calendars and diaries of 1996, 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, there was no picture of Gandhi. So there is no question of Modi replacing Gandhiji’s picture,” the sources said. “Those stoking the controversy over the issue should realize that during Congress rule of 50 years, the sale of khadi remained restricted to 2 per cent to 7 per cent but in last two years, the sale has seen an unprecedented jump of 34 per cent. This is because of PM’s efforts to popularise khadi,” they added. The PMO said “Modi is an icon of the youth and the growing popularity of khadi in the world is testimony to this.” The PMO said the KVIC diary and calendar has photographs of Modi distributing charkha among poor women, they said.

In a press release, BJP state general secretary (media) and spokesperson, Jaangsillung Gonmei, said that the order issued by BJP state president, Visasolie Lhoungu, also directed members not to engage in any acts or intentions that could hinder the party candidates’ success. NPCC objects to construction of border fencing (From p-1) In the same way, Nagas in India and Nagas in Myanmar or elsewhere have the same land ownership systems, NPCC said. H o w e v e r, N P C C claimed that the boundaries were demarcated at the whims of some bureaucrats. In this regard, NPCC said that the construction of Indo-Myanmar border fencing would deny access to one’s own traditional land holdings and create a barrier for socio-economic activity. Not only this, the division created would have a serious impact among the communities inhabiting the region in various forms. Further, asserting that no nation has the right to take away the lands traditionally held by Nagas, the NPCC urged both the countries to honour the boundary pillars for administrative purposes, so that harmonious coexistence would be maintained.

EC reserves order on SP ‘cycle’ symbol

New Delhi, Jan 13 (Agencies): The Election Commission of India on Friday reserved its order in Samajwadi Party’s ‘cycle’ symbol case. The Election Commission will announce its decision on which faction, Mulayam Singh Yadav or Akhilesh Yadav, gets the ‘cycle’ symbol of Samajwadi Party later on. Reportedly, the hearing on the matter lasted for over four hours on Friday. The Election Commission heard the argument of Mulayam and Akhilesh faction and reserved its order on the matter. Senior lawyer and Congress leader Kapil Sibal appeared for Akhilesh Yadav before the Election Commission. The Election Commission is expected to take final call on ‘cycle’ symbol before January 17 when the nomination process for Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will begin. After the PariWar ignited with time, it became

prominent that the candidates from both, Mulayam and Akhilesh camps cannot fight the election on ‘cycle’ symbol at the same time, therefore, both the factions had knocked the doors of the Election Commission. According to sources, Mulayam Singh Yadav had told Akhilesh Yadav to step down from the post saying that he would remain to be the party’s face for Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. But, Akhilesh refused the offer saying that he would pass on the baton once the elections are over. Earlier, representing

Akhilesh Yadav, Ram Gopal Yadav had presented six boxes of signed documents that as per him proves that the majority lies with Akhilesh Yadav and so, should be recognised as the true leader. Therefore, the party symbol should be given to him. Attacking Ram Gopal Yadav of misguiding his son, Mulayam Singh Yadav said, “I am standing here today and saying that I don’t want the party to split. You know it’s not me trying to split the party. Who is that person meeting politicians of other parties?

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Khadi & Gandhiji are symbols of our history, self-reliance & struggle. Removing Gandhiji’s photo is a sacrilegious sin.” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “The great symbol of ‘charka’ (wheel) and Mahatma Gandhi now gets replaced by Modi babu. In the calendar and diary of Khadi (KVIC) 2017, Modi replaced Mahatma Gandhiji. Gandhiji is the Father of the Nation. Modiji what???” The Prime Minister ‘s Office (PMO) said the controversy was “unnecessary” as “there is no rule in KVIC that it’s diary and calendar should have only Gandhiji’s photo.”

Neglecting governance

T

here is an urgent need for the state to come out of the shadow of high degree of abuse of power and manipulation at the high echelons of the government which has only bred and sustained corruption and lawlessness that ultimately affected good governance. Bureaucrats and the elected holding high posts in the government need to realise that they are probably leading themselves and the state into eventual doom by perpetrating the ‘khushi –khushi’ syndrome. The state needs to be set on the rails of progress through implementable and viable economic activities in the fields of trade or commerce and also tapping of the human potential for economic activities. So much emphasis has been made on ‘skill development’ for the educated youth and especially, rural youth as if it is the only solution and panacea for economic development of the state. Skill development is only a process to impart practical training but mostly on impracticable activities. The purpose of impartation will be meaningless unless the vision for economic development is multi- faceted; for it concerns not only about business activities but the people who have the traits needed to take up commercial business activities. In this regard, agro-economy is the common heritage so entrepreneurship in the rural areas should be given its due importance. A success story is the passion fruit business in Peren district and of late other horticulture products in various districts such as kiwi, strawberries, apples, oranges etc. A lot of emphasis has to be given towards creating necessary condition for the uplift of the rural areas. This is viewed from the point of potential in agricultural activities, though small, which the growing number of youth could take up otherwise, the problem of unemployment could worsen. The imbalances in development has to be corrected if the economic cycle is to be enlarged by creating more avenues through emphasis on viable plans and projects. Spurring economic activities cannot be done without certain necessities such as power, road, market and market loans. The lack of any can cause hurdles against progress as in the case with Tuli paper mill which languishes in uncertainty despite a huge amount injected for its revival by the government of India. Nagaland still does not have the foothill road to create the artery for movement of people and materials within and to the state’s railhead in Dimapur. Rail connectivity between Dimpur and Tuli and Tizit is a priority under the railways but hardly much has been done. Rail connectivity between Dimapur and Tuli is not only good for the people of the two districts but also for the entire state and its economy. Even the Dimapur railway station itself is plagued by some kind of conspiracy at some regional levels that are aimed at suppressing its growth. A proper growth has to be supported and this again brings to focus the imperative need to promote the development of Tuli as another trade and commerce centre of Nagaland. There has also been very little response from outside investors and so the prospect of spurring economic development has not take off. Political interests should not override economic interests while planning and implementing viable economic projects. Bureaucrats and politicians should provide good governance if they want the state to move forward.

DailyDevotion Have You Ever Been Alone with God? (2) When He was alone…the twelve asked Him about the parable. —Mark 4:10 His Solitude with Us.When God gets us alone through suffering, heartbreak, temptation, disappointment, sickness, or by thwarted desires, a broken friendship, or a new friendship— when He gets us absolutely alone, and we are totally speechless, unable to ask even one question, then He begins to teach us. Notice Jesus Christ’s training of the Twelve. It was the disciples, not the crowd outside, who were confused. His disciples constantly asked Him questions, and He constantly explained things to them, but they didn’t understand until after they received the Holy Spirit (see John 14:26). As you journey with God, the only thing He intends to be clear is the way He deals with your soul. The sorrows and difficulties in the lives of others will be absolutely confusing to you. We think we understand another person’s struggle until God reveals the same shortcomings in our lives. There are vast areas of stubbornness and ignorance the Holy Spirit has to reveal in each of us, but it can only be done when Jesus gets us alone. Are we alone with Him now? Or are we more concerned with our own ideas, friendships, and cares for our bodies? Jesus cannot teach us anything until we quiet all our intellectual questions and get alone with Him.

Post-mortem

Women status vis-a-vis 33% reservation for women in ULBs O T o introduce myself, I belong to a political party in Nagaland, also I belong to the literary world, though in a small way, in equal measure. Therefore, I want to share my sincere personal views on the status of women in the Naga society, then and now and also the preservation of Naga culture such as customary laws and practices in our society today. While sharing views, I also want to make it clear that one cannot do justice when sense of superconsciousness is present. Technology has advanced so much and so fast that today, we say ‘we are living in a global village.’ Let us also remember that we are now living in the 21st century. In the Naga society, the status of women was held in very high esteem. Though there was no written laws the women elders themselves in the villages controlled and directed the decency of women behavior at home and in the society. In the same manner, husbands treated their wives as their equals and there were instances that many leaders took advice from their wives while contributing their views to the decision making in the villages. The set of behaviors of decency among women and their role at home and in the society were guarded within a certain perimeter by the recognized elders among them. And to a great extent, they considered it taboo to violate those behaviors. But life style in the modern world has been changing so fast and so drastic that today our women are free in many ways. Take for example, in the past it was considered taboo for a women to touch weapons. Today, we have Mahila Bn. with 100% women in Nagaland Police wearing war uniform and holding guns. To argue in strict term, this is very much against our way of life but there is no complaint so far. Women never took part in high Jump, long jump, wrestling etc. in the past (rather women were not allowed to

come near the arena while wrestling was going on). But today, Naga girls are taking part in wrestling and all other athletic items participating in all major meets without hindrance. In the seventies, late Mrs. Rano was elected to the Lok Sabha and the Nagas were proud of her performances. Mrs. Banuo Jamir was once Chief Secretary of Nagaland and we are proud of it. Women traffic police can jail you or fine you when you break the traffic rules. In VDB, the Nagaland Government had given women quota to represent women in VDB in 1998 and also a certain percentage of fund was earmarked separately for their empowerment. This quota system in VDB continues for the last 19 years without any hindrance. Today, women control many departments in the Government as Commissioner/Secretary, Secretary, DC, ADC etc. but it is a normal thing. Taking all these into consideration, 33% reservation for women in Urban Local Bodies is a normal thing which should not be taken to the extent of what it is today. Naga people also should know why all our Hohos have taken up a stand to boycott the Municipal & Town Elections. The Naga Mothers’ Association in their representation submitted to the Chief Minister of Nagaland on 19th March, 2012 in which paragraph 3 of the representation says, “….Reservation for women in local and urban decision making bodies of the Panchayati Raj and Municipalities has been guaranteed through the 73rd and 74th Amendment of the Indian Constitution, which supersedes Article 371 (A)” This very sentence had ignited fear in the mind of the Naga people as a whole. Government of Nagaland had offered 33% quota to women in ULBs through nominee with voting right; but MNA had turned down and gone to court. Government of Nagaland did its best to denounce this

statement by giving clarification saying that 33% reservation for women should not infringe Art. 371 (A)because 33% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj (VDB in our case) as mandated in Art. 243D of Part IX of the Constitution of India is inapplicable to Nagaland in view of the exception granted in Art. 243M which says that Part IX of the Constitution of India will not apply to Nagaland. Also Art. 371(A) starts with obstante phraseology, “Notwithstanding anything in this Constitution” which means that all other provisions of the Constitution including 74th Amendment Act, stand superseded. Therefore, Article 371(A) is supreme law that empowers Nagaland to be the supreme Legislative Body in the State with capacity to supersede all Parliamentary laws including the Constitutional Acts. Even the then Law Minister, Asoke Sen said when Article 371(A) was being enacted and declared in Lok Sabha on 28th August, 1962 that Nagaland Legislative Assembly has the unique legislative powers of superseding the Central Laws. In spite of all these, the same fear in the mind of the people continues, because the case is lying pending in the Supreme Court. The case was filed in the name of NMA but the lawyers as well as all the judges are from the mainland and they will only stick to the legal point and, in that case, no one could give guarantee that this case will not infringe Art. 371 (A) because their lawyers and the Supreme Court judges may not be aware of the political history of the Nagas which led to the signing of the 16Point Memorandum in 1960. The rest of the world who do not know the background of the political history of the Naga political problem (which continues even now) will never understand and support a State within a country to have special provision as enshrined in Art. 371(A).

A young woman’s view on politics

The best course to solve the problem is, therefore, MNA should withdrawn the case in the Supreme Court on their own to remove the doubt in the mind of the people so that people will not object to their representation in the Urban Local Bodies. Because Government of Nagaland has already conducted ULB elections as per the provisions of the Act. Out of 32 town, elections were held in 26 towns which means 33% reservation is already implemented. Once it is implemented there is no point for the court to take up again. NMA should understand that Government is taking this much risk to implement 33% reservation quota for women. It is high time that good sense should prevail. NMA should also know that even if they win in the Supreme Court, that cannot change the mind of the Naga people; situation will remain the same. So, this may be taken as an opportunity to show the magnanimity and show some decency to normalize the situation by withdrawing the case on their own. I am sure, they will not regret for that decision. Their action will be appreciated by one and all. We all know very well that without having Urban Local Bodies, we cannot develop out towns. Migration from rural to urban areas is very heavy. Educated people never stay back in the villages. ULB, as elsewhere in the country are the bodies which develop the towns. On the other hand, our Hohos also should think that they will not take the responsibility to develop our towns. Grant-in-aid for ULB from the Centre is not coming forth for the last 5, 6 years. Who will be held responsible if development of our towns remain stagnant. Confrontation never solves the problems. Giving concession is a virtue. Let us be wise. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, President NPF Central, Kohima

s Guinness elsewhere remarked that the early protestant reformers viewed all the vocation as service to God and the Catholics viewed those who served as priest as special call o serve God. He then proceeds to say, however it is reversed now. How true. We often encounter the view that serving God as missionaries or pastor is extra special among the protestants. However that is not the case as Abraham Kupyer very beautifully said , “there is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” What is remarkable is Kupyer was the prime minister of the Netherlands at the turn of the 20th century. For those of us claiming to be Christian, how then should our Christian worldview inform us when it comes to how we look at politics? Should we simple look at politics as too worldly and dirty with the view “Do evangelism, not politics”? If God is indeed the Lord of all, every square inch of human enterprise comes under the Lordship of Christ. I may as well add politics too. The total Gospel consist not just “saving souls” but transformation of society. Politics is one of the means in the effort of transformation of society. If so, why not the talented and the learned involvement in politics and influence our government. Why politics should be left to ‘political families’ or those who can flex muscles? Why not march towards a better society through wise policies and capable leadership? In other words, why not the good people, the learned and the capable involve in politics? Closer to home, we are right now engaging on the issue of 33% reservation for women. I believe that women were made in the “Image of God” just as men are. This implies that women should be treated with dignity and whatever rights are available for men should also be available for women. I therefore humbly submit that women should also be given a chance to sit in the table of decision making. This however should be base on the individual’s merit. Some of the prominent successful women politicians credit not the reservation but merit. Margaret Thatcher political career was shaped not through reservation but her amazing combination of her wit, will power and courage. Historian Paul Johnson remarked that Prime ministers like Bandaranaike and Golda Meir “advanced themselves by brains, persistence, guts.” I therefore firmly believe women should be given the freedom to serve and transform the society through political platform, based on her merit. If Christians are interested in total gospel, we ought to include transformation of society as well. Politics is a means of achieving that goal. If that is our goal, women should also be allowed to participate in that enterprise. Imlibenla Wati

Nagaland’s reservation politics and the colonial hangover

W

omen’s reservation debate should be an issue of concern for Indian society which is known for its long history of crimes against women. Indian women have been subject to all form of discrimination from their male counterpart, which is inherently being part of the Indian socio-cultural system. The evils practice of Sati, Jauhar and Devadasis, which was a part of Indian traditional and conventional practice from which woman in India suffered in history. Even today Indian women suffers from dowry and its related death, witchcraft related murders, female infanticide and female foeticide, sexual related crimes, domestic violence, forced child marriage and human trafficking. UNDP’s Gender Inequality Index 2015 ranked India at 130th out of 188. Thomas Reuters Foundation Survey 2013 shows India as the fourth most dangerous place for women to live in. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India reported in 2015 that a crime against a woman is committed every two minutes (this same had ranked Nagaland as the safest state in India for women). Minorities, including Dalit, tribals, Muslim and Christian too continue to suffer at the hand of the majority group in India. This is the socio-cultural and political reality of India’s past and present, and

“reservation” if not some protective mechanism can be an option to solve gender inequality and social disparities. Given this context of how the question of women’s reservation emerges in India, which is in fact already a lapsed bill in India rejected by most of the mainstream Indian political parties, it is unfortunate to note that this very issue becomes a bone of contention between Naga public and Nagaland government. The present confrontation between the two parties once again demonstrated the stupid and senseless act of this unpopular government who never considered and respect the wish and sentiment of the people. This ill-fated decision of the state government to go ahead with Urban Local Bodies (ULB) election with 33% reservation for women reflects the inability of the chief minister and his government to understand under what political circumstances did women’s reservation issues arises in India and whether this reservation will be requires in our Naga society. The poor reading of the political situation of India by Nagaland government equates the social conditions of Naga women to their Indian counterpart. What has emerges from all these confusion and mismanagement created by state government is that all of a sudden a political

situation is created in Nagaland where Nagas was forced to think that Naga woman needs“reservation” which would only place our womenfolk in an unequal position in our society, who otherwise enjoy an equal status and opportunity which none of their counterpart couldenjoy in India, even though Naga women’s participation in political activities is very less. What Nagas need to know is that this contentious law is an imported piece which has no relevance in our state. Naga women taking greater responsibility in our society is never an infringement of Article 371 (A). Naga women playing a bigger role in decision making cannot be considered as undermining our Naga traditional and customary practices. Naga women getting elected in a political institution and having more political representation, unlike in the past, would never harm or damage our traditional social structure. But the enforcement of 33% reservation for women in the ULB or state assembly will badly affect and spoil our great social order. The reason being this “women’s reservation” issue had been originated in India to counter its own problem. This issue is a part of sociopolitical progress that India confronts in its history and it is a politically moulded phenomenon where politician and political parties

in India wants to use it for vote bank politics. And it is not wise on our part to adopt India’s solution model to solve our social problem. We need to understand that although gender disparities exist in our society, this disparities has our own origin. It has something to do with our own traditional social system where Naga women indeed has less participation and played less role in decision making. And if Naga wants to reform this system and enhance women’s role in our society, we need to create our own model through which our women can be empowered and place them at par with their male counterpart. But simply copying Indian way of women empowerment, which is solely intended for vote bank politics, will not help solve our social problem.Any system that is blindly accepted without improving on our own will affect our social fabric. An attempt to “emanc i p a t e N a g a wo m e n ” through a borrowed concept will be counterproductive. It would only serve as a vote bank for our opportunistic and selfish Naga politicians who are always ready to copy any Indian system or facilitate the onslaught of an alien culture in our society as long as it serve their narrow political interest. This is a classic case where the end result is being distorted

by the authority by manipulating the means. The “means” which the state government is trying to enforce is therefore never intended towards achieving what they claimed to an “end result” The women’s reservation politics in Nagaland is a litmus test for our modern Naga society which is traditionally an equal, just and

tolerant society. Failing to handle this test of our times by our leaders wisely and hastily enforced a system which is percolated down from the colonial captor would risk making our Naga society which is equal unequal. Nsungbemo Ezung, Research Scholar, NEHU, Shillong, (ezung_n@yahoo.com)

Reader’s Post

Sir,

33% reservation

There is so much fuss in media/ social media regarding implementation of 33% reservation for women in Nagaland so here is my thought. Let us first implement 33% reservation in the upcoming 2018 State Assembly. I am sure the Government of the day who supports Women reservation will pass it in the Assembly and it won’t infringe the Article 371A since it will be passed by the state assembly. The opposition less Government of the day is strongly united in making sure our Naga women gets a place in the ULB ( Urban local bodies). So by implementing it for the upcoming state assembly election they will set an example that they are visionary men who cares for our Naga women and wants them to share equal responsibility together in our state highest decision making body. I am sure the various tribal organisations who are against the implementation of 33% in ULB will support them since our elected representative will be leading an example that they care for women reservation by sacrificing their seats. I am sure NMA and JACWR (Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation) will fight for reservation in NLA (Nagaland Legislative Assembly) if the various tribal organisations stand united to have it implemented in the upcoming 2018 elections. Looking forward to example set by the current elected MLAs to show us the way that they truly care for our women. Vikeduo Linyü, Kuda Village

Neiphiu Rio addresses LSU 50th general conference at Chukitong

Neiphiu Rio addressing the gathering. (DIPR)

Dimapur: Lothas are considered as achievers in many fields, said MP Lok Sabha, Neiphiu Rio who unveiled the Lotha Ekhae Ekhung 50th General Conference Monolith Stone. The stone was donated by Abeni TCK’s family in memory of late TCK Lotha IAS, former LSU President, former Chief Secretary of Nagaland and a Minister, at Chukitong on January 12, satted a DIPR report. Reflecting on the theme “Be an agent of change”, Rio said that positive change will not come as miracle but every concerned individual needs to work towards it as stakeholders in the society. He observed that the modern Naga society is an educated society but in regard to the process of civilisation and evolution although we have achieved many goals

within a short period of time, we are still a young society to call ourselves civilised. He also observed that among the Nagas, the Lotha community has exceedingly achieved on many competitive platforms and have done well on social, education and economy ratings as well. Education, as the most powerful weapon can make a person an asset of the society and a positive agent of change but taking it for granted and misusing of knowledge can make him a liability for the society, he said. Educating a child through synchronised participation of child, parent and teacher is important as he learns to prepare to face the challenges of life ahead he also added. Making a narrative of Naga history, he said that the government of

state

India and the world is now recognising us, the Nagas, as a People. Our political issue is no more known as law and order issue, but a political issue, and we are now recognised as a people with a unique history. Therefore, the present cease fire and the dialogue is going on, he added, and said that it now depends on the Nagas whether we want to come together and unite and accept what is available or to reject and continue to fight. President LSU, Amos Odyuo during his presidential address stated that he and his team had put in a great amount of time for the Union’s welfare during which they faced countless hardship and constraining pressures but saw God’s divine intervention and courage to lead on the student community thus far. Issues were many and so were the difficulties and challenges he said, and appealed to the Lotha intellectuals and leaders to learn to appreciate, encourage and support the selfless social leaders who work relentlessly for the uplift and progress of the people in a changed scenario for a better future. Many things need to change to keep up with the changing times, but there are things which needs our

careful preservation, and those are our vibrant tradtition, culture, costumes and the bravery and honesty of our forefathers, said Dr. Abemo Odyuo, Controller of Examination, NU who spoke on the theme, “Be an agent of change.” Subenthung Kithan, President NSF, in his greetings speech advised the student community to use social media carefully and wisely as irrational and destructive means of its usage will in the long run destroy the peaceful fabric of the society and even between people. In his keynote address N. Ejanthung Ngullie, Convener, Steering Committee, expressed gratitude to the pioneers of the community who shouldered responsibilities and envisioned enlightened society for the Lothas and worked hard to pass on to the younger generation a legacy they own with pride. The programme was chaired by N. Janbemo Humtsoe, Member Steering Committee. Earlier in the day Rev. Nyanchumo Ezung, Executive Secretary LBES pronounced the dedicatory prayer of the monolith stone, while Rev. Fr. Matthew Rhanben invoked God’s presence in the inaugural session of the conference.

He added that the bank had effected a cut of between 0.75-1%in its deposit offerings right after the November 8 government announcement to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, which has led to a surge in the low-cost current and saving account deposits. When asked about his outlook, Rathi said there is no more room for a cut at present and any further action hinges on events like a cut by RBI in its key rates or a surge in low-cost deposits. The bank had also cut its ase rate by over 0.10%earlier this month. MCLR replaced the base rate in April last year for a better transmission of the RBI’s policy actions in borrower costs. Mumbai, Jan 13 (PTI): Country’s third biggest private sector lender Axis Bank today cut its interest offering by up to 0.70 per cent, following similar moves by all the major players in the system due to high liquidity post demonetisation. The Shikha Sharmaled bank cut its marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR) for one year tenure—which serves as the benchmark for a slew of loans including home loans-by 0.65%to 8.25 per cent, it said in a statement. The new rates, decided by the bank’s asset liability committee which met today, are effective from January 18. “We have passed the entire benefit accruing from a surge in the current and savings account and a drop in deposit rates to the bor-

NEW DELHI, Jan 13 (Agencies): Budget carrier SpiceJet said on Friday it had agreed to buy 100 new MAX 737 aircraft from Boeing, with an option for 50 more, ramping up its fleet as it targets expansion in the world’s fastest growing aviation market. SpiceJet said it had signed a deal for buying up to 205 planes from Boeing worth up to $22 billion at list prices - but the announcement includes 55 jets already announced in a 2014 deal and the possible follow-on order of 50 more. “As part of this transaction have they (Boeing) not only been kind enough to give us good commercial terms but have worked hard to reduce the maintenance cost of the aircraft going forward,” Ajay Singh, SpiceJet’s chairman, told a news conference in New Delhi. A source told Reuters on Thursday that SpiceJet was set to announce an order for as many as 100 new planes.

Singh said the purchase rights include an option to buy wide-body aircraft for long haul journeys as the airline considers launching low-cost flights over long distances. The deal is a welcome boost for Boeing in India, where SpiceJet is the U.S. company’s only major customer among the budget carriers now dominating the country’s air industry. Indian airlines such as the biggest, InterGlobe Aviation’s IndiGo, as well as GoAir and SpiceJet have ordered hundreds of new planes as they rush to win a slice of the boom in demand for air travel. SpiceJet has about 13 percent of the Indian air passenger market, behind market leader IndiGo, Jet Airways and state-run Air India.

Iran and Iraq lifted the Middle Eastern share in India`s crude diet to 64 percent in 2016, reversing a declines in recent years, partly due to rising prices for Atlantic Basin oil tied to Brent. The average premium for Brent jumped against Dubai crude to more than $3 a barrel in 2016 from around $1.80 in 2015. “In 2016 Iran ramped up its output to regain market share while Iraq segregated its production into Basra Light and Heavy to attract customers. Basra Heavy was sold at a discount, making it more attractive than rival grades,” said Haq. Iran`s share of Indian oil imports surged to 11 percent in 2016 from 5 percent in 2015. Saudi Arabia remained the top supplier to India last year followed by Iraq and Venezuela. Imports from Latin America declined for a second year, with its share of imports shrinking to about 16 percent from 18 percent, while Africa`s share fell to about 15 percent from a fifth.

ance Industries, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum and HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd (HMEL) last year resumed imports from Tehran, attracted by the discount offered by Iran. “In most of 2016 there was a fight among Gulf producers to increase their market share and lifting of sanctions against Iran has intensified that fight,” said Ehsan ul Haq, senior analyst at London-based consultancy KBC Energy Economics. In April-December, the first nine months of this fiscal year, Iranian supplies to India averaged a record 530,300 bpd, up from about 400,000 bpd before sanctions tightened against Tehran. India’s 2016 Iranian oil imports were the highest in at least six years, according to the Reuters data. Government data going back over a longer period shows the average was the highest since the 2001-02 fiscal year. Germany forms special Brexit CIA Director nominee Mike committee led by Angela Merkel lists ISIS, Russia as threats

Pak concerned over Indian, Afghan spy ties Islamabad, Jan 13 (IANS): Pakistan on Friday expressed concern over the “nexus” between the Afghan spy agency and India’s Research and Analysis Wing, saying that foreign elements were exploiting the already worsening situation in the country. “The activities of Indian spy agency RAW and its nexus with Afghan agency NDS (National Directorate of Security) remain a matter of deep concern for Pakistan,” Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said in a news briefing. In May 2015, the spy agencies of Pakistan and Afghanistan signed an agreement on intelligence sharing and coordinated operations. Islamabad has earlier too alleged that Indian and Afghan intelligence agencies support terrorism in Pakistan. Zakaria rejected allegations that Pakistan was giving safe haven to terror networks in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), saying the country does not allow its territory to be used for attacks against any other country.

Mike Pompeo be essential that the Agency provide policymakers with accurate intelligence and clear-eyed analysis of Russian activities”. “Russia has reasserted itself aggressively, invading and occupying Ukraine, threatening Europe, and doing nearly nothing to aid in the destruction of ISIS,” he said. Testifying before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Pompeo said this is the most complicated threat environment the US has faced in recent time. The Congressman described Syria “as a failed state” that has become one of the “worst humanitarian catastrophes of the 21st

century”. “This conflict has led to the rise of extremism, sectarianism, instability in the region and Europe, and the worst refugee crisis the world has faced in recent memory,” he said. “ISIS remains a resilient movement, has metastasised, and shockingly has controlled major urban centres in the Middle East for well over two years,” he said. “Whereas a few years ago, we focused on stemming the flow of foreign fighters going to Syria and Iraq, today, the concern is making sure they, and those they inspire, are prevented from expanding their reach, returning home, or slaughtering more innocent people,” he added. Attacking China for its activities in the South and East China Seas and in cyberspace, he said it is pushing new boundaries and creating tension. He also targeted North Korea for dangerously accelerating its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, with little regard for international pressure.

Musharraf applies for ‘foolproof security’ Islamabad, Jan 13 (IANS): Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Friday filed an application in an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad seeking “foolproof security” in order to be able to return to Pakistan and appear in court in the judges detention case. An application filed by Musharraf ’s counsel Akhtar Shah asked the court to direct authorities to provide extraordinary security to the former president in view of “serious security threats”. Until such security measures have been taken, the application said, Musharraf should be exempted from appearing in court. The application said it is “neither safe nor advisable” for Musharraf to appear in person in the court due to security and medical reasons. “Security conditions in the courts and otherwise have not yet improved,” the application read, and sought direction for authorities to provide security to Musharraf. ATC Judge Sohail Ikram accepted the application and issued notices to Inspector General of police Islamabad and the home secretary. The hearing was adjourned till February 9. At the last hearing of the judges’ detention case in

December, the ATC gave a one-month deadline to Musharraf to surrender. The court had warned at the time that the former military ruler would be declared a proclaimed offender if he failed to comply with the deadline. The judges’ detention case was registered by the Secretariat police on August 11, 2009, on the complaint of Advocate Chaudhry Mohammad Aslam against the former military ruler for confining 60 judges of the superior courts for over five months and restraining them from administering justice. The judges, including former Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, were detained after the proclamation of an emergency in the country. Musharraf left the country for Dubai in March last year hours after the Interior Ministry issued a notification to remove his name from the Exit Control List. Apart from murder cases of Benazir Bhutto, Nawab Akbar Bugti and Ghazi Abdul Rasheed, the retired general is facing treason charges for imposing emergency rule in November 2007, arresting judges and limiting their powers.

Angela Merkel Berlin, Jan 13 (IANS): The German government on Friday announced that it would form a special committee, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, to approach the UK’s departure from the European Union (EU) and prepare for bilateral negotiations between the two countries. During a press conference, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that talks with the UK would not commence until the British government formally declares the activation of Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, which would trigger the Brexit negotiations process, Efe news reported. However, Seibert stressed that “we need to be prepared”. The committee’s first

Eating blue maize may reduce BP, cholesterol, fat New York, Jan 13 (IANS): Consuming blue maize may help prevent metabolic syndrome -- a cluster of conditions that includes high blood pressure and blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol, a study conducted in rat models has found. Physical inactivity, genetic profile and a diet with inadequate energy intake are other factors that drive metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome also raises an individual’s risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, the researchers said. The natural antioxidants present in blue maize may help protect against metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, diabetes as well as cancer, said Rosa Isela Guzman-Geronimoa from the University of Veracruz in Mexico. In the study, the rats were fed on a high-sugar and high-cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. They were given blue maize extracts during a period of 4 weeks. The rats showed significant improvement in systolic blood pressure, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels compared to those not given the extract.

Paris, JAN 13 (Agencies): An icy storm has been lashing parts of western Europe, causing power cuts in many homes, felling trees and disrupting some rail services. In France power cuts affected more than 237,000 homes as the storm swept across Normandy and regions north of Paris. In Dieppe, on the coast, winds reached 146km/h (90.5mph). The storm, nicknamed “Egon”, later hit southern Germany - mainly Rhineland-Palatinate and northern Bavaria. Power cuts and traffic jams were widespread. E m e r ge n c y t e a m s were out in force during the night in France and Germany. A woman died in Saint-Jeannet, in southeastern France, when a tree toppled over and crushed her. She had been getting her children ready for school, Le Parisien website reported (in French). In some parts of France schools and colleges have cancelled classes. thedral and damaged the organ. Drivers have been warned of treacherous conditions on some German roads, because of snow and black ice. Three motorists died in crashes in Bavaria. Meanwhile, flood defences have been reinforced on Belgium’s coast. The cold snap across Europe has claimed more than 65 lives. Poland and much of south-eastern Europe, including Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and western Turkey, are in the grip of heavy snow and freezing cold. Thousands of migrants in the Balkans are poorly protected against the icy conditions, as many

are still in tents and have little heating. The UN refugee agency UNHCR said several migrants had died from cold and exhaustion in Bulgaria. It urged Greece to move more quickly to transfer migrants to better facilities on the mainland, following a report that on the island of Samos at least 1,000 people were sheltering in unheated buildings. The wind and snow in Germany forced Lufthansa to cancel 125 flights at Frankfurt/Main airport. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn also set a 200km/h speed limit on high-speed ICE trains, which caused some travel delays.

Chinese daily says US risks ‘war’ over South China Sea

Beijing, Jan 13 (IANS): A leading Chinese daily on Friday warned the US of a “large-scale war” if it tries to block Beijing’s access to the South China Sea islands. The state-run Global Times said that if recent statements become a policy when Donald Trump takes over as President “the two sides had better prepare for a military clash”. It said any approach by Washington to prevent Chinese access to the islands will be “foolish”. The editorial in the

English-language daily, which is known to reflect the thinking of the Chinese Communist leadership, came after Rex Tillerson, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, called China’s activity in the waters (South China Sea), which see $5 trillion in ship borne trade a year, “extremely worrisome” and sought denial of its access to the artificial islands. Tillerson did not specify how the US would block access and further likened China’s island building to “Russia’s taking of

Crimea”. “The US has no absolute power to dominate the South China Sea. Tillerson had better bone up on nuclear power strategies if he wants to force a big nuclear power to withdraw from its own territories,” the editorial said. It called Tillerson’s statements “as far from professional” and said “China has enough determination and strength to make sure that his rabble rousing will not succeed.” “Tillerson merely wanted to curry favour from senators and increase his chances of

being confirmed, by intentionally showing a tough stance towards China,’ said the daily. “He also lacks legality. If China is not allowed access to islands it has long controlled, does this also apply to Vietnam and the Philippines?,” according to the editorial. The Global Times called Tillerson as “the most controversial candidate among Presidentelect Donald Trump’s nominees for his Cabinet” and said he is considered the one most likely to be vetoed by the Senate.

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Agencies): Congressman Mike Pompeo who is Donald Trump’s pick to run the CIA, has listed out Russia, Syria, Iran and the Islamic State terror group as major threats to the United States. Describing Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terror”, he alleged that Tehran has become an emboldened, disruptive player in the Middle East, fuelling tension “with our Sunni allies”. On the Iranian nuclear deal, Pompeo said the US must be rigorously fair and objective in assessing the Joint comprehensive Plan of Action. “As the President-elect has made clear, one of my top priorities, if confirmed, is to assist in defeating ISIS,” Pompeo told lawmakers during his confirmation hearing. “Radical Islamic terrorism is both a symptom and a catalyst of the terrible conflicts raging in the Middle East that have created both a humanitarian and strategic catastrophe,” he added. Pompeo said it is a policy decision as to what to do with Russia, adding “It will

Along with Chancellor Merkel, other high-profile members of the executive will take part in the panel. The committee will include two members of Merkel’s coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party (SPD): Vice-Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. In addition, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble, Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt and the Chancellery’s Chief of Staff and Federal Minister for Special Affairs Peter Altmaier are also set to take part in the select group. Seibert said that, in the future, other departments could join the Brexit commission. “Special situations demand special reactions,” he said, stressing the unprecedented nature of a member state leaving the EU. Seibert added that EU countries were “calmly” awaiting the British government’s official notification of the decision, which, according to Prime Minister Theresa May, is set to occur before the end of March.

Barack Obama has ended the longstanding policy that grants residency to Cubans who arrive in the US without visas. The 20-year-old policy allows Cuban migrants who reach US soil to become legal permanent residents after a year. In exchange, Havana has agreed to start accepting Cubans who are turned away or deported from the US. Many Cubans in the US say Washington is rewarding a regime which has failed to address human rights concerns. But President Obama is trying to continue the thawing of relations with Cuba in his final days of office. He said: “With this change we will continue to welcome Cubans as we welcome immigrants from other nations, consistent with our laws.” Cubans in the United States

Sky pulls Michael Jackson programme after family complaints

S

ky has said it will not air a TV programme about Michael Jackson after his daughter said she was “incredibly offended” by the portrayal of him. The episode - part of a series called Urban Myths - had been due to air on Sky Arts. Sky released a statement on Friday saying they had pulled one episode after concerns were raised by Paris Jackson. The broadcaster said it “never intended to cause any offence”. Statement from Sky: “We have taken the decision not to broadcast Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon, a half-hour episode from the Sky Arts Urban Myths series, in light of the concerns expressed by Michael Jackson’s immediate family. “We set out to take a

light-hearted look at reportedly true events and never intended to cause any offence. Joseph Fiennes fully supports our decision.” The stories had been described as “slightly tongue-in-cheek, mischievous and deliberately ambiguous” by Sky Arts on its website. The episode told the story of Jackson taking a road trip from New York to Los Angeles with Elizabeth

Taylor and Marlon Brando after the 9/11 terror attacks. Actor Joseph Fiennes had said he was shocked to be given the part of Michael Jackson last year. On Thursday, Jackson’s daughter Paris said on Twitter that trailer footage from the episode made her “want to vomit”. “It angers me to see how obviously intentional it was for them to be this

insulting, not just towards my father, but my godmother [Elizabeth Taylor] as well,” she said. “Where is the respect? They worked through blood sweat and tears for ages to create such profound and remarkable legacies. Shameful portrayal.” More than 20,000 people also signed a petition to boycott the half-hour episode. The petition particularly objected to Fiennes’s casting as Jackson instead of a black actor. “It’s easy to see why the story would make a compelling film - but it’s harder to understand why the actor best known for his role in Shakespeare In Love was the first choice to play one of the world’s most iconic black musicians,” the petition said. Michael Jackson died in 2009 aged 50.

Both songs immediately smashed the existing Spotify record for one-day streams. He has since announced that his new album, ‘÷’ , which is pronounced “divide”, will be released on March 3. During a recent interview, Sheeran confirmed that he will appear on James Corden’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ shortly, and said he wants to show off his rap skills when he does.

a nve e r S i n g h was seen smiling from ear to ear at the premiere of rumoured girlfriend Deepika Padukone’s Hollywood debut ‘xXx: Re t u r n o f X a n d e r Cage’, and he said he is proud that the actress is representing India internationally. The Indian premiere of “xXx” was held here last evening and the occasion was graced by Bollywood bigwigs like Karan Johar, Shahid Kapoor, Sudhir Mishra, Irrfan Khan and Ranveer. “It is a proud moment for me. I am very excited about the night. It is a big Hollywood film, we have some special guests in the city. It is the premiere of ‘xXx’, starring Deepika, who is a special co-actor of mine and I am looking forward to watching

the movie,” he told reporters. “Deepika is a gifted actor and an amazing movie star, someone whom I really admire. I am extremely proud of her,” the actor said. The star attraction of the evening was actor Vin Diesel, Deepika’s co-star in “xXx”. Asked about his opinion on Vin and Deepika’s on-screen equation, Ranveer said, “The chemistry looks good in the promos, but rest I can only say after watching the movie.” The film is releasing in India tomorrow, week before its US release. Jackson. xXx: Return of Xander Cage Movie Review CAST: Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Kris Wu, Ruby Rose, Tony Jaa, Nina Dobrev, Toni Collette, Samuel L. Jackson DIRECTION: D. J. Caruso GENRE: Action DURATION: 1 hour 47 minutes STORY: Considered dead for years, Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) is pulled out of a self-imposed exile when the xXx program is threatened by the Pandora’s Box, a device capable of unleashing global destruction using geostationary satellites. Cage employs a group of thrill-seekers to help him find the weapon, as they clash against the formidable Xiang (Donnie Yen) and his team of highly trained

mercenaries. REVIEW: Vin Diesel has a penchant for adding fuel to any franchise he’s attached to – if you’ll pardon the pun, and ‘xXx’ is no different. True to form, ‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage’ pushes the action to the max with extreme sports, gun fu, bike chases on land and on water, jumping off a plane with no parachute – to name only a few tropes. A treacherous villain, a sharpshooting sniper (Ruby Rose), a bumbling yet adorable hacker (Nina Dobrev), an enduring mentor (Samuel L. Jackson), and a charismatic DJ (Kris Wu) for the sheer heck of it; practically all the action movie clichés have been crammed into this flick to make it quite the spectacle.

Pune, Jan 13 (IANS): India’s outgoing skipper for the limited overs team Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Friday said he changed his batting order according to the team’s requirement. Dhoni recently stepped down from captaincy of OneDay International and T20 International teams. He also said he is ready to change his batting order again “if the team wants me to do”. “The top-order batsmen batted really well and I felt there was no explosive finisher at the lower order and due to that I was batting lower down the order,” Dhoni said while addressing the media ahead of India’s first OneDay International (ODI) against England, here on January 15. “Over the years, I

I debuted in 2004, was given the captaincy in 2007. If I see my journey since then, I had to change according to the team’s needs. I started in the lower order, then moved up the ladder. My batting order was never fixed. I used to get batting for 25-30 overs. However, it changed in the last few years,” he added. Dhoni also reckoned he prefers one leader in all three formats of the game. “I don’t believe in split captaincy. For the

BERLIN, Jan 13 ( Ag en c i e s ) : C h i n a faces a one-year ban from international weightlifting competitions after three of its athletes were stripped of their 2008 Olympic gold medals on Thursday following re-tests of samples from the Beijing Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it had disqualified weightlifting gold medallists Cao Lei (75kg), Chen Xiexia (48 kg) and Liu Chunhong (69kg) from the Beijing Games after they tested positive for prohibited substances. Lifters from Taiwan, Russia and Kazakhstan could be upgraded to the gold medals, although it is unclear if they too failed doping tests in the re-analysis. The IOC also disqualified five more athletes from both the Beijing and London 2012 Olympics, including Nadzeya Ostapchuk, of Belarus, third in the women’s shot put competition in Beijing, whose sample was positive for anabolic steroids. The International Weightlifting Federation said last year that countries with three or more failed drugs tests in the re-tests of Beijing and London would be banned for a year from all international competitions.

MELBOURNE, Jan 13 (Agencies): Six-time champion Serena Williams was handed a tough draw on Friday at the Australian Open, while defending champion Angelique Kerber has a slightly easier route towards another final. The American powerhouse, bidding for a 23rd Grand Slam crown at the tournament starting in Melbourne on Monday, faces dangerous former world number seven Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the opening round. Second seed Williams, who lost the top ranking to Kerber last year, could then encounter in-form Briton Johanna Konta in the fourth round and Slovak sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova in the quarters. She could potentially then meet her US Open conqueror Karolina Pliskova in the semi-final of the bottom half of the draw. Williams’ drop to world number two was triggered by her shock defeat to Pliskova at Flushing Meadows last year, which also denied her chance to better Steffi Graf ’s 22 Grand Slam victories. Pliskova is seeded to meet two-time Melbourne Park semi-finalist Agnieszka Radwanska in

M A D R I D, J a n 1 3 (Agencies): Karim Benzema struck deep into stoppage time as Real Madrid set a new Spanish record by extending their unbeaten run to 40 games in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Sevilla to progress to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday. Holding a 3-0 first leg lead, a Cristiano Ronaldoless Real looked set for defeat for the first time in eight months as an own goal from Danilo and second-half strikes from Stefan Jovetic and Vicente Iborra saw Sevilla lead 3-1 inside the final 10 minutes. T h r e e - t i m e N BA champion James, already 12-time NBA all-star, has received 1.06 million votes and leads Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo (963,110) in voting for Eastern Conference frontcourt players. Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, a three-time all-star, is first among backcourt players in the East with 971,362 votes, ahead of the 514,866 of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade.

39-game unbeaten run set by Barcelona last season. “Possibly they deserved to win the game, but we fought until the end,” Real boss Zinedine Zidane told GolTV. “They deserved more tonight, but the tie is two games and (over the two legs) it is logical that we go through.” Both coaches named weakened sides with one eye on Sunday’s crunch top of the table La Liga clash between the two back at the Sanchez Pizjuan. Johanna Konta clinches Sydney International title S y d n e y, J a n 1 3 (Agencies): Johanna Konta’s preparations for the Australian Open began in perfect style as she sealed her second WTA Tour title with victory at the Apia International in Sydney on Friday. The British No 1 made it third time lucky against Radwanska with an emphatic 6-4 6-2 victory at the Ken Rosewall Arena. The Polish second seed and 2013 champion, who beat her opponent in both of their previous meetings last year, was unable to cope with Konta’s dominance as she produced an 82-minute display of aggression and power. Konta overcame a string of unforced errors to win the first set when Radwanska sent a return wide after 45 minutes. And she increased her dominance in the second set, racing into a 4-0 lead and sealing the victory with a seventh ace on her second championship point. Konta, who did not drop a set all tournament, was watched by her sister, nieces and nephews, and said: “I was born here so this is a very special moment for me.” She will now head to Melbourne with ambitions of emulating her success last year, when she went on to reach the semi-finals, although she has been handed a tricky opening tie against Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens.

Johanna Konta celebrates after winning the final match.

Sania-Barbora finish runners-up Sania Mirza’s hopes of winning her second title of the season in as many tournaments dealt a jolt as she lost the Sydney International final with Czech partner Barbora Strycova on Friday. The Indo-Czech pair suffered a straight-set defeat 4-6, 4-6 at the hands of Timea Babos of Hungary and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the summit clash. Sania and Strycova made it to the final after prevailing over America’s Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazakhstan 6-1, 6-2 in just 51 minutes while Babos and Pavlyuchenkova defeated Andreja Klepac and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final. After splitting with Martina Hingis last year in August, it was Sania’s sixth final in eight tournaments. She won the Cincinnati and Tokyo events with Strycova and the New Haven tournament with Monica Niculescu. It’s only at the US Open (Quarter-finals) and Beijing (2nd round) events that she made an early exit. Last week, Sania had won the season-opener Brisbane event with Bethanie Mattek-Sands but ironically lost her world number one rank to the American, who jumped five places to dislodge the Indian from the top spot.

Federer named world’s most marketable athlete in 2016

Roger Federer

M adrid, J a n 1 3 (IANS): A study prepared by the London School of Marketing has revealed that Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer was the world’s most marketable sports person in 2016. According to the study, published by the Association of Tennis P r o f e s s i o n a l s ( AT P ) website on Thursday, the former World No.1, currently ranked 17th, earned nearly $60.7 million last year despite his “slow year in terms of success in his sport”.

Danilo powered a header into his own net after just 10 minutes. In the absence of Ronaldo and Benzema, Mariano Diaz was handed a rare start up front and nearly levelled in bizarre fashion as Sevilla ‘keeper David Soria’s clearance ricocheted off the striker and inches wide. However, most of the action in the first-half came at the other end as Casilla saved three times in quick succession from Wissam Ben Yedder and Luciano Vietto to prevent Real falling further behind. To n i K r o o s f i r e d inches wide just before the break, but the vital away goal the visitors needed to kill off the tie arrived in spectacular fashion three

minutes into the secondhalf. Marco Asensio pounced on a clearance from a Sevilla corner on the edge of his own area and ran the length of the field barely challenged before slotting below Soria. That left Sevilla needing an unlikely four more goals to qualify, but they continued to pour forward as on-loan Inter Milan forward Jovetic marked his debut by volleying home Escudero’s cross six minutes later. Sampaoli threw on frist-team regulars Samir Nasri and Vitolo in search of more goals. And Madrid’s record run appeared to be over when Iborra forced the ball home from close range to make it 3-1 with just 13 minutes remaining. However, Casemiro was adjudged to have been pushed inside the area by Matias Kranevitter five minutes later. Against his former c l u b, R a m o s s h owe d remarkable calm to chip the resulting spot-kick down the middle of the goal. And Benzema provided the final sting in the tale three minutes into added time when he saw off two tired Sevilla challenges before firing low past Soria to seal a 6-3 aggregate win. Earlier, Celta Vigo and Eibar completed their progress into the last eight having already built-up three-goal first leg leads over Valencia and Osasuna respectively.

“His successful endorsement deals show that personal characteristics can also be an important part of long-lasting sponsorships,” the study said. Federer is listed ahead of American basketball p l aye r L e B r o n Ja m e s ($53.8 million) and golf players Phil Mickelson ($50.2 million) and Tiger Woods ($44.8 million). Federer’s fellow tennis greats Novak Djokovic ($33.8 million) and Rafael Nadal ($31.8 million) are also listed in the top 10.

Chautala and Shri Suresh Kalmadi, Life Presidents of IOA,” the ministry said in a statement. “In the light of the above developments and keeping in view the larger interest of promotion and development of sports in the country, the Minister of State (Inde pendent Charge), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has revoked the suspension of deemed recognition of IOA, imposed on 30.12.2016, with immediate effect,” it added. The ministry, however, asked the IOA to uphold the highest standards of probity and ethics in future also. “ S i n c e I OA h a s admitted the faux pas committed and regretted the inconvenience and embarrassment caused to all concerned, it is expected of IOA that it will uphold

the highest standard of probity and ethics in its functioning in future,” the ministry said. I OA P r e s i d e n t N Ramachandran welcomed the ministry’s decision. “If the ministry revokes the suspension, it is good news for IOA. As far as I am concerned, if the government revokes the suspension, I am thankful to the ministry,” Ramachandran told PTI. Kalmadi and Chautala were elevated to the honorary position at the IOA’s AGM in Chennai on December 27, but the Olympic body was forced to reverse its decision after it was opposed by a majority of IOA members. Kalmadi declined the post while Chautala said he would also step aside should the International Olympic Committee raise any objections.

Ozil returns to Arsenal squad L o n d o n, J a n 1 3 (Agencies): Mesut Ozil will return to the Arsenal squad for Saturday’s game with Swansea, boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed. The Germany international has missed the last three games because of flu. Laurent Koscielny, fresh from signing a new contract this week, also returns along with Petr Cech and Alexis Sanchez – they all missed last week’s FA Cup win at Preston. Full-back Hector Bellerin is still out along with midfielder Francis Coquelin and winger Theo Walcott, who needs another two weeks before he can be considered. “Walcott was out for three-and-a-half weeks.
