Governor roots for skills over academics
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JAN 13 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya on Friday stressed on the need to equip oneself with skills, saying mere qualification or degree was not a prerequisite for success. “The existing conventional education system has become redundant. Anyone can become an asset if equipped with skills,” he said while speaking at the inaugural function of the three-day national conference on ‘Advances in Indian Horticulture with Focus on North East & Hill Region’ at Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, jointly organised by CIH, Indian Society of Ornamental Horticulture (ISOH) and Department of Horticulture Nagaland. Acharya was also critical of the education system/institutions which, according to him, were merely churning out “unemployable” graduates. He therefore called for major reforms in the educational system where institutions would impart skills and empower students to be assets for the society.

The governor also remarked that Nagas were “not prepared to work hard,” despite the abundance of natural and human resources in the state. “Only Nagas can develop Nagaland,” he stated while calling for a change in mindset. A person has three identities-- human being, citizen of a country and profession-- and that one should assume his identity in that order, he added.
Acharya lauded the institute and the department of Horticulture for their efforts and urged them to perpetuate the good work. Also dwelling on the role of civil societies and student organisations, the governor maintained that instead of staying engrossed in politics they should have an agenda for growth and development. Earlier, Acharya inaugurated the three-day exhibition in the campus where florists and entrepreneurs from across the country had set up stalls.
He, along with other dignitaries, also launched the skill development course, released the publication and handed out awards to nursery owners from Nagaland and Assam. Before his departure, Acharya also exhorted the congregation of scientists, experts, and officials from across the country to give their best towards development of the society and country.
