CHENNAI, DEC 6 (AGENCIES): Hundreds of thousands of grieving Amma supporters Tuesday thronged Marina Beach, the final resting place of ‘Puratchi Thalaivi Selvi J Jayalalithaa’ to catch one last glimpse of their beloved leader. Her body was shifted from Rajaji Hall, where it was kept for the public to pay their last respects, to an Army truck decked with over two tonne of flowers, and made its way to the MGR Memorial. AIADMK workers, supporters, Chennai residents lined up along the route to the burial ground as her funeral procession slowly inched towards her final resting place. There was heavy police presence in the area, with helicopters circling overhead. Draped in her favourite green saree, Jayalalithaa’s body was moved to a casket made of sandalwood, engraved with the words Puratchi Thalaivi Selvi (Revolutionary Leader) in Tamil. The last rites were performed by her long-time confidant and aide Sasikala. Her body was lowered into the ground, next to where MGR was buried, after receiving full state honours.

NNC blames UK govt for Naga’s political plight DIMAPUR, DEC 6 (NPN): NNC under the leadership of Z. Royim Yimchungrü and V. Nagi on Tuesday said that the British government “was and is fully responsible for the political plight of the Nagas since 1935”. Taking note of the statement made by minister cultural affairs, British Council, India, Alan Gemmel, OBE “that the long relationship of UK (British government) and the Naga people were indeed long and true started from 1832”, NNC information and publicity wing in a press note however said that “the long relationship were only hardship and betrayal by the UK government”. NNC said Naga people had faithfully helped the UK during WW-I and WW-II. However, in return “they just ignored the political act enacted and passed in the House of Lords (British parliament) in 1935 called ‘Naga Hills Excluded Area’ which was and is a valid political act stood/stand tall in the British parliament”, NNC stated. In this regard, NNC said Nagas were not interested in any other comment or statement from UK minister but to talk about Naga Hills Excluded Area in reality.

Petrol, diesel price likely to touch Rs 80, Rs 68: Crisil MUMBAI, DEC 6 (IANS): The price of petrol is expected to rise by 5-8 percent and that of diesel by 6-8 percent over the next 3-4 months after last week’s decision by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to cut crude oil production by 1.2 million barrels per day (mpbd), Crisil Research said on Tuesday. “The price of Brent crude could increase to $ 5055 per barrel by March 2017 following Opec’s move, and if it surges to $60 as some believe, the price of petrol could touch Rs 80 and diesel Rs 68 per litre. A cut in production always lifts prices, but the success of the Opec agreement depends on adherence,” said a Crisil statement. (More on p-8)

According to Acharya, the demise of Jaya, who had served five terms as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, between 1991 and 2016 was a great loss not only to Tamil Nadu but also to the whole of the country. He said late Jayalalitha served as the general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the highest post of the party and was popularly referred as Amma (Mother), Puratchi Thalaivi, Thanga Gopuram, Thanga Chillai and Thanga Tharagai (Golden Maiden) by her followers. SC comes down hard on rash driving RBI to launch new Rs 100 notes

NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (AGENCIES): Holding that the existing two-year imprisonment for causing death due to rash and negligent driving as grossly inadequate, the Supreme Courton Tuesday asked the Centre to provide harsher punishment for the offence by amending the law. A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy said time had come to inject the fear of law among drivers who put the lives of pedestrians and other drivers at risk by their reckless and adventurous driving. It asked the Centre to take a stand on the issue within eight weeks. The court asked attorney general Mukul Rohatgi to inform the government to look into the issue in proper perspective and take a decision to provide stringent punishment for rash and negligent driving causing death. Attorney told the bench that a bill was pending in Parliament and assured that he would inform the authority concerned about it. “We are compelled to say so as people are dying in road accidents. People are losing their lives and limbs. In many cases, people are left with permanent disability... There has to be fear of law among people whether they like it or not,” the bench said.

Concerned about the menace of rash and negligent driving which claims nearly 400 lives on Indian roads every day, the court said the penalty of two-year jail term failed to act as a deterrent and the lawmakers should amend Section 304A of IPC and introduce harsher punishment for causing death due to rash and negligent driving. Section 304A says, “Whoever causes the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both”. The court had, in the last hearing, sought AG’s assistance after the Centre failed to comply with its earlier order. Decrying the “nonchalant” attitude among drivers, the court had said, “They feel that they are the emperors. Drunkenness contributes to careless driving where other people become their prey. The poor feel that their lives are not safe, the pedestrians think of uncertainty and the civilised persons drive in constant fear but are still apprehensive about the obnoxious attitude of the people who project themselves as larger than life.”

MUMBAI, Dec 6 (AGENCIES): The Reserve Bank on Tuesday said it will soon put into circulation Rs. 100 denomination notes in market with enlarged identification features. “The Reserve Bank will shortly issue Rs. 100 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, without inset letter in both the numbering panels,” RBI said in a release. The notes with ‘2016’ printing year will be similar in design with the existing Rs. 100 notes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 having ascending size of numerals in the number panels, bleed lines, and enlarged identification mark, on the obverse. RBI said it has already put to circulation Rs. 100 currency notes with the ascending size of numerals in the number panels but without bleed lines and enlarged identification mark. These banknotes will remain in circulation concomitantly with the banknotes being issued now, it added. “All the banknotes in the denomination of Rs. 100 issued by the Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender,” RBI said further. Besides, earlier this week RBI had said that it will issue Rs. 20 and Rs. 50 denomination currency notes. Launch of these small value currencies will be a big relief to common consumers to meet their daily requirements as the Rs. 2000 denomination bank note available currently has a limited acceptability as finding change has become a big issue.

ment of Nagaland recognises and acknowledges. “In a lot of occasions our performances fare better than the state police personnel in areas like guarding and traffic control and we should continue to perform in the way we are performing right now,” Sharma said. He disclosed that following an appeal made by the Punjab Home Guards in the Supreme Court for their salary to be made at par with the police as the personnel of the two departments per-

form equal amount of work. The Supreme Court had passed a judgement that the Home Guards should also be paid a salary equal to that of a police personnel’s minimum salary. Therefore basing on this judgement even the Nagaland HG&CD has also taken up the matter with the state government and the latter has, in principle, agreed to increase the salary of the Home Guards after the approval of the cabinet, Sharma said. He added, “When the government increases your

salary, it will become your bounden duty to perform in accordance with the increment, you will be paid three times the salary you are paid now and likewise you also have to perform thrice the level of your performance now.” Sharma expressed his faith in the personnel that they would perform better and bring more glory to the department. Sharma informed that the central government had recently written a suggestion letter where the Home Guards, Civil Defence and Fire Services, Delhi, Director General listed out how many standing reserves of Home Guards & Civil Defence each state should keep ready wherein Nagaland needs to have 23,000 standing reserves according to the letter. This does not imply that 23,000 people will get jobs rather it means the state should have a reserve

of that much volunteers, but so far Nagaland has only 3,500 trained volunteers and are a short of 20,000 trained volunteer, Sharma said. Those trained volunteers would be stationed at various locations including remote places so that they can help out in event of disasters, inter community clashes, public disturbances etc. so that they can assist the police, army etc., Sharma said. The high court in its December 12, 2013 order on a petition converted into PIL after it took suo moto cognizance of media reports that a BSNL official was duped for Rs 35,000 at an ATM counter.

It had passed slew of directions like 24 hours security cover at ATMs to ensure that only one customer could enter a booth at a time, functional CCTV cameras at the counters. It had further said that people should enter ATMs booths without mufflers, helmets or caps and sought checking of character antecedents of temporary workers. NEW DELHI, DEC 6 (IANS): As two legislators from Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal joined the Congress on Tuesday, Congress state unit chief Amarinder Singh said cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu met him and “gave an impression he is inclined to support our party”. The two Akali members of the state assembly (MLAs) who joined the Congress are Rajinder Kaur Bhagike from Nihal Singh Wala and Mahesh Inder Singh from Baghapurana. Amarinder Singh, a former Chief Minister, said the party’s list of candidates for the 2017 assembly elections will be finalsed by December 8, and announced on December 9 or 10. “I met him (Sidhu). I can tell that much. I hope he’ll very soon make an announcement about what he wishes to do. I found him in a very positive frame of mind. I hope it’ll be a positive decision,” Amarinder Singh said, without revealing when the meeting took place. “The impression I got, without any commitment from his side, is that he is inclined towards supporting us. I can’t tell you about his joining,” he said. Amarinder Singh said Sidhu told him his family had supported the Congress

in the past and that his father was a district Congress President and remained an Advocate General during the Congress rule in the state.Asked what does the former cricketer want from the Congress, Amarinder said: “He doesn’t want anything. He just has to make up his mind on whether he would like to carry on with what he is doing or whether he wants to come...” “...no assurance from his side, but certainly I feel the way he was talking, he would like to campaign for the Congress or work for the Congress. But this he has to announce himself,” he added. On whether Sidhu will contest the Amritsar Lok Sabha by-poll, Amarinder Singh said: “That will be the Congress president’s decision. I don’t think Navjot is interested. It’s for him to say, but I don’t think he is interested.” Navjot Singh Sidhu had earlier represented Amritsar constituency in the Lok Sabha. Amarinder Singh won the seat in the 2014 general elections by defeating the present Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, but resigned from the Lok Sabha membership on November 11 in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict on a Presidential Reference on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal.

The dominating presence of Sasikala, in a black sari and red-rimmed eyes, was seen by many as symbolic of the power that the former video store owner enjoyed for decades as the other occupant of Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden home in Chennai. It is expected that Sasikala, who Amma referred to as her sister, will be named as the new general secretary of the AIADMK party. There are also speculations that she could choose to name M Thambidurai as the party chief, but as always she will keep pulling the party strings from behind the scene.

Modi consoles

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hugged new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam as the latter wept inconsolably when the Prime Minister visited Chennai’s Rajaji Hall, a

large public auditorium where J Jayalalithaa’s body was placed for people to pay their respects before she was burried at Chennai’s Marina beach near her political mentor MGR.The BJP is looking at a closer strategic relationship with the new AIADMK leadership. PM Modi was also seen patting Ms Jayalalithaa’s long-time companion Sasikala Natarajan on the head. Ms Natarajan too broke down and PM Modi consoled her, stopping for a few minutes to talk to her. When PM Modi was walking back to his vehicle, Mr Panneerselvam hugged him with tears in his eyes. President Pranab Mukherjee also paid respects to Ms Jayalalithaa in Chennai. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and at least eight Chief Ministers, including Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal, also attended the funeral.

Governor, CM and speaker condole...

She not only became the leader of the people, but also came to be identified as the “motherly figure, nay, demi-god to her followers and supporters”, said Zeliang. The chief minister also viewed Jayalalithaa’s death was a great loss to the womenfolk throughout the country, whom they looked up her as a motherly figure and a source of inspiration. Further, the chief minister on behalf of the Nagaland joined the Tamil Nadu and nation in mourning the death of a legendary political leader. Zeliang prayed that the almighty grant solace and comfort to the near and dear ones of the departed soul at this hour of grief and the departed soul rest in eternal peace.

NLA Speaker: Chotisuh Sazo expressed shocked and saddened on the untimely demise of Jayalalitha, saying she “was admired by all for her courage, conviction, dynamism, wisdom and her bold administration”. “Her contributions have brightened the lives of millions of people of the country for the last more than three decades”, Sazo said. According to speaker, in her passing away, the state of Tamil Nadu in particular and the country as a whole, lost an “unparalleled leader and her exemplary excellence of service to the people will always live on in our hearts”. Sazo on behalf of the members of NLA conveyed heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family.

Gov greets on Armed Forces Flag Day

DIMAPUR, DEc 6 (NPN): Nagaland governor, PB Acharya, has extended his warm greetings and best wishes to all the members of Armed Forces, ex-servicemen and their families on the occasion of the Armed Forces Flag Day, observed annually on December 7 throughout the country. In his message, Acharya said the day was intended to honour the martyr, to salute the veterans and the brave and to enhance the traditional bonds that exist between citizens of the country and the Armed Forces. He said, “This day is celebrated to enlist the public co-operation and support for three basic purposes –rehabilitation of families

of battle casualties, welfare of servicing personnel and their families and resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families, in general.” The governor particularly congratulated the Armed Forces personnel deployed in the state for their exceptional contribution to the peace and security of the people and the unity and integrity of the Nation. On the occasion, the governor also appealed to all citizens

to contribute generously towards the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund, which he said would go a long way in supplementing the effort of the governments for welfare of war widows, disabled soldiers and the ex-servicemen and serving soldiers - who have been safeguarding the nation from external aggression and come to the aid of civil authority at the time of natural calamities and disaster.

WB BJP leader held with new notes worth Rs 10 L K O L K AT A , D E C 6 (AGENCIES): A BJP leader in Bengal who was the party’s candidate in the Assembly polls was arrested with six others in Kolkata with bundles of cash totalling Rs. 33 lakh. Police said most of the notes were brand new 2000 rupee notes. Manish Sharma, the BJP candidate from Raniganj Assembly seat in the polls of April-May, was arrested with Rs. 10 lakh in his personal possession. Another Rs. 23 lakh was seized from six others arrested along with him. Sources say the group had possibly converted black money into white in Kolkata. The seven persons were arrested Monday night by a police team which was tipped off that the group was travelling in an Innova

car from the Asansol-Durgapur to Kolkata with lots of cash and arms. Raju Jha, one of the people in the group, is suspected to be part of the coal mafia in the Asansol area. The group managed to slip past the police at the Dankuni toll plaza 30 km from Kolkata, say sources, but police traced their movement through cellphones and arrested them last night from a flat near the Kolkata airport. The arrest of Manish Sharma has embarrassed the BJP in Bengal. In photos and videos available, Manish Sharma has been seen with Babul Supriyo, BJP lawmaker from the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency which includes the Raniganj Assembly seat from where Sharma contested. Several other BJP

leaders like Piyush Goyal, Raghavendra Rathode and Shahnawaz Hussain are seen with Sharma. “Yes, we gave him a ticket but after that when he tried to meet me, I avoided. I don’t know anything about his coal mafia associations,” Babul Supriyo has reportedly said after Sharma’s arrest. Local BJP leaders are also trying to distance themselves from him. But sources in the party say Sharma was a Babul Supriyo lieutenant who he backed despite the party’s reservations about him. The arrested men were not just carrying cash, they were also carrying several improvised semi-automatics guns and a Carl Walther pistol and ammunition. In police records, Manish Sharma, whose visiting card says “President, BJP

Raniganj Mandal”, is listed as Manish Joshi whose father resides in Pune. But according to BJP sources and the police, they are one and the same person. In Manish Sharma’s voter card, his residential address is Hyderabad. At Raniganj, local BJP leaders say Manish Sharma had nothing to do with the party since June 30. But the Trinamool Congress is likely to raise the issue in Parliament tomorrow. O n M o n d ay, Tr i namool chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of buying land just ahead of demonetisation. Earlier, there were reports that the Bengal unit of the BJP had deposited Rs. 3 crore in its official bank account just before Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes were scrapped.

Human and drug resistance

W

orld AIDS Day observed on December 1, this year was observed on a defiant note by some organisations who boycotted the event in protest against non-release of funds for treatment of those living with HIV/AIDS. The protest reveals the pattern of non-payment of salaries to employees and also non-release of funds for central funded projects for whatever reasons. It is a matter of deep concern that the state government itself has become a bad paymaster. The nonrelease of funds for ongoing projects does raise serious issues about the intention and integrity of state authorities. Funds continue to pour into the state but how these are apportioned and for whom, perhaps are matters that are being questioned. While Nagaland is still grappling with the menace of HIV/AIDS which has not shown a downslide; the handling of much needed fund for those in need of treatment and also for targeted intervention, is very unfortunate. It may be recalled, that 19,097 were detected as HIV positive since January 1999 to October 2015. The data shows a rise in cases of those tested positive over the previous year’s data. Dimapur alone accounting for more than 4,000 cases and stands as the highest prevalence district. Worldwide, there is realisation that the fight against HIV/AIDS is far from over. According to a technical report released by World Health Organisation(WHO) countries have been asked to be alert to drug resistance that could possibly undermine the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS. This is much lower than the global prevalence rate of 0.8 per cent (in 2015). Health authorities assert that India has achieved one of the Millennium Development Goals of halting and reversing the HIV epidemic by 2015. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Bihar, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh account for nearly half of the new infections. These States, along with Maharashtra and Karnataka are home to nearly two thirds of people infected with HIV. Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland are at the top in terms of prevalence. But some States have witnessed the opposite trend - an increase in HIV prevalence. Though most of these States have figures that are lower than the national prevalence rate, still some among them like Tripura and Sikkim have recorded a relatively steep climb. Awareness on HIV/AIDS cannot be said to be insufficient though it should continue to be carried out. The church organizations in Nagaland have also been sensitized on the urgency to spread awareness among its members. Though the church had initially shown little inclination to get involved with HIV/AIDS programs and seminars, the gradual shift has been noteworthy. Expecting the church to promote safe sex would therefore, amount to asking it to forego its own tenet of moral and ethical dogma. The issue of HIV/AIDS, excluding contact through blood transfusion, touches on aspects of behaviour with regard to substance abuse or casual sex. A sustained and holistic approach is needed to tackle HIV/AIDS but it is proving to be a difficult task. Thus, while there is drug resistance, the failure to get all on board is also like a mental resistance both of which, pose stiff challenges.

DailyDevotion “My Rainbow in the Cloud” I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. —Genesis 9:13 It is the will of God that human beings should get into a right-standing relationship with Him, and His covenants are designed for this purpose. Why doesn’t God save me? He has accomplished and provided for my salvation, but I have not yet entered into a relationship with Him. Why doesn’t God do everything we ask? He has done it. The point is— will I step into that covenant relationship? All the great blessings of God are finished and complete, but they are not mine until I enter into a relationship with Him on the basis of His covenant. Waiting for God to act is fleshly unbelief. It means that I have no faith in Him. I wait for Him to do something in me so I may trust in that. But God won’t do it, because that is not the basis of the God-and-man relationship. Man must go beyond the physical body and feelings in his covenant with God, just as God goes beyond Himself in reaching out with His covenant to man. It is a question of faith in God— a very rare thing. We only have faith in our feelings. I don’t believe God until He puts something tangible in my hand, so that I know I have it. Then I say, “Now I believe.” There is no faith exhibited in that. God says, “Look to Me, and be saved…” (Isaiah 45:22). When I have really transacted business with God on the basis of His covenant, letting everything else go, there is no sense of personal achievement— no human ingredient in it at all. Instead, there is a complete overwhelming sense of being brought into union with God, and my life is transformed and radiates peace and joy.

Post-mortem

The Indianization of Home-based medi-care: Naga culture via Hornbill! The new paradigm O E ven as start-up seems to be the new buzzword across the country, a few “sons of the soil” seem to have taken it quite seriously. And with fair amount of success as well. Meet Dr Simanta Sharma, founder and CEO of HOMELTH, Northeast India’s first home-based medi-care service provider, whose startup venture has already brought about a new paradigm vis-à-vis medical care in the region. A star t-up venture o f N a m g r u I n n ova t i o n s, HOMELTH is a unique concept in the healthcare industry of the region whereby the medical care reaches the homes of those in need, not the other way around and thus, in a way, reviving the concept of family doctor of the yore. And as part of the initiative, not just doctors and nurses, even physios, dieticians and paramedics are available on call 24x7x365 to respond to any urgent medi-care need. Ancillary health services like sample collection for lab tests, facilitating hospital admission of patients, delivery of medicines, conducting ECG, providing oxygen, etc, are all available on call. Launched in August this year, the service is currently available within the city limits of Guwahati, though there are plans to extend HOMELTH’s footprints further in other parts of Assam and Northeast. The service has special significance in a fast-growing city like Guwahati where local commute has become quite frightening with traffic snarls becoming the order of the day, and moving patients from homes to hospitals under such circumstances sometimes a real nightmare. HOMELTH

promises to address this issue by reaching home within the least possible time. Also, during flash-floods and water-logging, for which Guwahati seemed to have already earned notoriety, the home-based healthcare service promises to be a game-changer. It reaches the homes of those in need of urgent medical attention in a water-logged area. After its launch in August, HOMELTH has since forayed into the realm of specialised medi-care launching the region’s first geriatric clinic – HOMELTH Geriatric Clinic –recently. The clinic promises to meet the special requirements of the elderly population whose numbers are on the ascent in Guwahati. Speaking about the whole concept, Dr Sharma explains: “This is a new paradigm in the way medical care is delivered wherein instead of the patients going to the hospital for anything to everything, the hospital, in a sense, now comes to one’s home to deliver quality care at one’s bedside.” No wonder then that after its launch the phone hasn’t stop buzzing at HOMELTH’s Navagiri Path office, in the city’s Chandmari area. The requests range from seeking doctors to nurses, psychological counselors to paramedics and physios to conducting ECGs or laboratory tests. To its credit, the organisation has been able to reach people at home requiring urgent medical care, and that includes a very prominent journo. A home-grown start-up venture, HOMELTH also nourishes the ambition to become a pan-India brand over the next 3-5 years by having its

Maradona and Nagaland

W

here in one’s imagination would we have thought that Nagaland and Maradona would be mentioned in the same sentence. Besides demonetization the question on every mind is what can be the result to the combination of Nagaland and Maradona. Should he really come to our hills whatever the agenda some focus would be on Nagaland football. Attention is what Nagaland football really needs. Maradona might just be what the doctor ordered. Other states in the north east have marched on ahead with their football culture. Nagaland was supposed to be the pioneer in this field but now we are playing catching up or should I say we are not even doing much of that. The love for the game is evident regarding the fact that almost every village area and district have their annual football tournaments and you add the majors like NSF trophy, Classic Cup etc. What Nagaland football really needs is a league system covering players as much as possible. With a league system connected to the rest of the country via promotions. This will give the footballers and teams a direction and with direction will come ambition which will in turn elevate standard and performance. The winning team of NSF or Classic cup have the direction of winning the cup next year again and nothing beyond thus creeps in complacency. With a league successfully in place facilities and infrastructure will follow like a natural cause. Complaining about infrastructure and facilities does not hold weight if standard does not show. Maradona first started playing football in the slum like conditions of Villa Fiorita. Moreover expenditures incurred on stadiums and facilities should not take place before first accounting for the real needs. Whatever the scenario,

a Football league to kick off and survive needs self sustaining. For Football to income sustain itself in Nagaland it is not an impossibility. First of all during the initial stage say five years at the least, nurturing from sponsors and Government is required. Sponsors of every nature cannot be taxed too much in a taxed environment so the Government has to play a more dedicated role. In a perfect world all 60 elected members of the Legislative Assembly can contribute Rs.1000.00 per month from their salary to Nagaland football and all Government employees can contribute Rs.100.00 per month from their salary to football. These amounts should not hurt much. You do the math and there you have a monthly source of income to take Naga Football to the heights it can reach. But the world is not perfect. Diego Maradona on Naga soil would be for Naga Football a life time opportunity in many aspects. Nagas love football though the love and passion have not brought enough success and recognition. Proper Football Talent identification nurturing and management have not found necessary efforts. If the eyes of Maradona see potential and talent in our players and if his heart feels the passion for football in the Nagas then something just might happen. If the eyes of one of the greatest footballers see even a glimpse of talent in our players then who are we to question the possibilities of our players. Why doubt the investment in our footballers. Nagaland Football needs resurrection, Maradona can create that second coming. Our Footballers are crying for support and recognition, Maradona can turn that cry into a deafening scream. Ayeto Ayemi, general secretary, Nagaland Football Coaches Association (NFCA)

presence in cities like Kolkata, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad and Vijaywada. Dr Sharma says he intends to spread HOMELTH’s footprints to other parts of Assam, besides the other Northeastern States very soon. He elaborates: “As a son of the soil, it’s my dream to make HOMELTH a brand from Assam and take it to the rest of the nation and even abroad. But prior to that I want to reach other parts of Assam and North-eastern states. I hope to provide affordable but quality healthcare not only to the people of Assam, but rest of the region.” A healthcare professional with 17-plus years of experience across the entire spectrum of healthcare industry from pharmaceuticals, to medical devices & diagnostics, hospitals and healthcare IT/ITES, Dr Sharma has worked in blue chip companies like Ranbaxy Labs, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Manipal Health Enterprise and Hinduja Global Solutions and has managed businesses worth over USD 100 million. The entire venture is backed by a consortium of investors. The current team comprises doctors, nurses, patient-care attendants, 24x7 medical helpline staff, paramedics, technicians, 24x7 ambulance staff and 24x7 oxygen therapy team. HOMELTH’s ser vices can also be availed on annual membership basis wherein people can opt to become members and avail a host of services against a one-time annual fee. ne will find in many of the websites how hornbill festival of Nagaland is celebrated. One reads like this, “the aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions. For visitors it means a closer understanding of the people and culture of Nagaland, and an opportunity to experience the food, songs, dances and the customs of Nagas. To encourage inter-tribal interaction and promote cultural heritage of Nagaland, the government of Nagaland organizes the Hornbill Festival”. Now the question we ask ourselves is, do we really showcase our culture and tradition in a truest Naga way? To my humble opinion, we have been failing miserably time and again to display our rich culture, food, songs, dances etc etc. we witnessed a resentment from certain intellectuals for the “JAI HO” Naga way when Shri. Narendra Modi graced the Hornbill Festival as our Chief Guest. And as though that error was not enough, this year we are witnessing a massive unprecedented changes at our heritage site; a worry for me personally. The following are some handful events that already took place. A traditional blessing is invoked by a “GURU”. I am pretty sure, the title Guru is accorded to him for his excellence in tribal music by certain academy which is well taken, however seeking a traditional blessing bypassing the village chiefs/Anghs/etc amounts to demeaning our own respected Naga elders. Thank you Rev. Moa Longchari for the invocation prayer despite the fact that your name did not even figured in the official program circulated by the organizers. Your humble prayer as a Reverent is a wakeup call for the Government that as a Christian state we ought

to beseech the blessings of our Almighty God, before and after any occasion, though superseded by the GURU. Tourist were taken by surprised while witnessing a superb show of BIHU dance by Assamese troupes that lasted for more than 30 minutes. Even the various cultural troupes were wondering how the Assamese troupes took the limelight(not in terms of excellence) but in terms of time allocation. The local tribal troupes were given a strict 15 minutes and 10 minutes each to perform and exit. A denial of display to our own cultural troupe on their day when they were prepared to perform all day long. Up next was the tri-colour salad at the Naga Heritage village. What a display of traditional Naga cuisine! Please let us not confuse ourselves with our traditional eating habits to that menu provided at the stars. A criminal tainted politician from Bihar Rajesh Ranjan, famously known as Pappu Yadav infamously known for assaulting a crew member on flight with his chappel, coming and gracing as a guest tells all. Have we run out of even guests? Have we reach our saturation point where we can have a state guest from whom we can learn and look up to? He might be a five timer M.P. of Lok Sabha where he won elections while he was inside the prison, but that does not qualify us to go his path. Kindly bring us a zero criminal record guest in the coming years. The above few events have taken place in our Hornbill Festival 2016. Do we really need to be content with the way it is celebrated? To my observation, we need a lot more of dignity and reality that showcases our true values and ethos with our various tribal and village cultures. Kuknalim. R. Vitsiatho, Meluri town

The script writers’ error

ursoring the dramas of the day to day events would speak volumes about the errors that must have crept into our chaos laden society. Down the ages, speeches have been delivered in very systematic and appealing manner but the society of chaos and confusion continue to rise like the inflation. Speeches that do not touch the hearts of millions and address the core issues of problems continue to pile. All these irrelevant efforts with an aim to alleviate the disorder would only worsen situation to irreparable position. This is what I feel our society made its basis and continue to journey on foundation not well-laid. We are on a slippery slope, a slope where the runners of the show throw mud instead of raising retention with proper foundation. Most of the leaders who go around to make speeches read out what is prepared by their faithful secretaries, who use the most appealing language to gain attention and approval. They end their work with the speech. They forget even what they say because they don’t mean it ! This kind of practice keep going in our society which is why we are witnessing the most dilapidated form of governance. Problems are not solved through the public speech. It must be followed up or else speeches that cannot be practicalized is a useless endeavour. We are witnessing and experiencing an intellectual arena, an era where young generation is able to foresee the destiny of the society. In this situation, the script writers must use words that they think is noteworthy of a given situation. We do not need an orator who build castle in the air. We do not need an orator who mimics the prepared speeches or ventilate the thoughts of the script writers. We need a leader who walks with the common people, listening, interacting and arriving at the solution together that is amicable. Well then, how do we arrive at a solution that is amicable? Perhaps, one could be, speak less and do more. Or even the

best could be don’t speak at all but do what is necessary. But the whole problem is that people are all interested in speaking with confidence on things they are even uncertain, for want of recognition. This is where the script writers have gone wrong. They have journeyed too far on an alien path. They will not go easy because the society will not allow them to move and swing in manner they like for long. Everything in the universe has its own time. Nature will not allow individuals to keep floating in wonderland at the cost of the mass. How much people use honey in their speech to gain popularity and fame? They are venoming the society gradually. And this is how our society is venomed to a degree that would take a generation to eradicate. How many speeches have you listened to in your life most of which are so very appealing and we felt that they were already fulfilled! But to our dismay, there are many projects lying incomplete in our vicinity because somewhere the lifeline of the entire society has been diverted to family and community fund. Don’t ever feel this is the manna from heaven! But rather this is the plague that will haunt a generation or two. Ages have gone by with both dark and bright history. But a contemporary of ours as horrible as this is too painful for one to encounter. The world is full of

literature as a result of the fertile imagination of some great souls. But literatures of fanciful category cannot jigsaw in a society of ours. We need realists who take society to heights desired by all. Everywhere we turn our heads around, we see a society wanting to be happy, looking for a just leader who would share the resources justly. In all these situations, there are people squandering the resources meant for all because of which confusions are on the rise. Taking to account all these menaces, the script writers must write scripts that is understandable in the language of the people in the periphery. A script that floats in the air will only add fuel to fire. The proclaimers of such scripts will be held accountable for the lies they deliver for thousands. So, better do more and speak less. Fellow co-pilgrims, we are unique piece in this beautiful universe. Our journey may come to an end at a time we least expect it. Let us therefore march with zeal and with authentic and crystal clear vision for the good of the society. We are obliged to uplift it by virtue of our birth. Most of all, it is so very important for us to be ready to meet the most fearful occasion of one’s life: Death! Write a good history of your life in this short sojourn. Vekupa Rhakho George, St. Dominic Savio Parish, Ciephobozou

KOHIMA, DEC 6 (NPN): Parliamentary secretary of Art and Culture E. Eshak Konyak handed over full set computers along with printers to the seven district cultural offices of Nagaland during a function held at directorate of Art and Culture Kohima on Tuesday. Konyak in his address at the brief function urged the department staff to utilize the equipments provided for the benefit of the department. He highlighted the new initiative taken up for the departments and said that next year new building would come up and extension of state museum. New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI): One97 Communications, the firm that owns Paytm, is restructuring its business ahead of the launch of its Payments Bank, merging the wallet business with payments bank operation. “It is transfer of business. Wallet business will move to payments bank while One97 will be managing the sales part for the wallet business. The transfer will be complete once payment bank licence is obtained,” a Paytm spokesperson said. The company had incorporated Paytm E-commerce and Paytm Payments Bank as separate companies earlier this year. Reserve Bank of India had awarded ‘in-principle’ approval to Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the founder of One97 Communications, to set up a Payments Bank. 64 from Rs 60 at present, the report said, as the Brent crude may jump top USD 50-55 a barrel by March 2017, and if it surges to USD60, the price of petrol may touch Rs 80 and diesel Rs 68. A production cut always lifts prices, but the success of the Opec agreement depends on adherence. Previously, there have been instances of members breaking away from the cartel because of domestic compulsions, the report noted. On domestic demand scenario, the report expects the demonetization and the consequent reduction in economic growth to curb usage, but things would rebound once currency in circulation reverts to normalcy. Rising crude prices also means profitability of public sector refiners would improve in the third quarter driven by inventory gains. In December, the average price of Brent is seen over USD 50. Given that refiners typically book crude 30-40 days in advance, prices for December delivery will be lower at USD46 as was seen in November.

Mumbai, Dec 6 (PTI): Oil cartel Opec’s decision to cut production from next month may lead to a 5-8 per cent spike in retail prices of fuel over the next three-four months and massively boost the margins of state-run refiners, says a report. A Crisil report said the price of petrol may rise 5-8 per cent and that of diesel by 6-8 per cent over the next 3-4 months following the production cut and the resultant spike in crude prices. It also sees a near doubling of gross refining margins (GRMs) of public sector refiners in the December quarter to USD 6-7 per barrel levels from USD 3.8 in the second quarter as the oil companies average prices for December delivery will be lower at USD 46 as was seen in November. In Mumbai, that would mean petrol price can top Rs 75 per litre compared to Rs 72 now, and diesel more than Rs

Mumbai, Dec 6 (PTI): The rupee today staged a strong recovery by gaining 31 paise to end at 67.90, its highest level in three weeks, on heavy dollar selling amid expectations of a rate cut by RBI tomorrow. Forex dealers said the rupee also drew support from a firm trend in equity

ending at 67.90, showing a smart gain of 31 paise or 0.45 per cent. Hardening expectations for an interest rate cut by the apex bank in its Wednesday’s policy meet to rejuvenate the sagging economy against the back drop of softening inflations supported the currency upmove. This is the currency’s highest closing since November 16, when it had ended at 67.94 against the dollar. In worldwide trade, the US dollar traded little changed as investors eyed economic data ahead of a potential interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve’s upcoming meeting. The US dollar index was quoted marginally at at 100.32 in late afternoon. Meanwhile, the RBI today fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 68.0322 and euro at 73.1074. In cross-currency trades, the rupee strengthened further against the pound sterling to finish at 86.60 from 86.71 and also edged up against the Japanese yen to close at 59.54 from 59.73 per 100 yens earlier.

Business elite grilled over Park scandal German chancellor Merkel calls South Korean president faces impeachment vote over corruption scandal

Choi but denied receiving presidential favours in return. “President Park asked us to give generously to support the development of sports, culture and tourism,” said Lee, vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics and the de facto head of the wider group. “We didn’t ask for any favours in return.” Huh Chang-soo, the chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries,

Angela Merkel, waves after her speech as part of a general party conference of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Essen, Germany, Tuesday. (AP/PTI)

ESSEN (GERMANY), Dec 6 (AFP): German chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a ban on full-face veils in the country, during a speech at her party’s conference on Tuesday. “The full veil is not appropriate here, it should be forbidden wherever that is legally possible. It does not belong to us,” she said at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) gathering. Her comments were met with sustained applause by the audience. It’s not the first time party leaders have proposed banning the Islamic dress, with Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere also calling for the veil to

barred from public places in August. “It does not fit into our society for us, for our communication, for our cohesion in the society.... This is why we demand you show your face,” he said at the time. Merkel’s comments come weeks after she announced she would be seeking a fourth term in next year’s elections. The 62-year-old chancellor said she expected the 2017 campaign to be her toughest to date. Merkel has angered many voters with her decision to open Germany’s borders to migrants, mostly from war zones in the Middle East.

In September, her party suffered a significant defeat in local elections. Another stint for Merkel would also be significant because a large part of the German electorate is looking for stability in uncertain times after the Brexit vote in Britain, the election of Donald Trump in the United States and the rise of populist movements in several European countries. Germany’s proposal follows similar bans in France, Belgium and Switzerland. Cannes, a city on the French Riviera famous for its annual film festival, temporarily banned religious swimwear -- including burkinis -- in the wake of recent terror attacks in the country. In April 2011, France also became the first European country to ban wearing the burqa, a fullbody covering that includes mesh over the face, and the niqab, a full-face veil with an opening for the eyes, in public. The law was upheld by the European Convention on Human Rights in 2014 after a 24-year-old woman brought the case to court, claiming it infringed on her religious freedom.

Paris, Dec 6 (Agencies): French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday appointed Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve as prime minister until a new president is elected next May. The appointment followed the resignation of Manuel Valls, who quit to run for president after Hollande himself decided against seeking a second term. Cazeneuve will play caretaker ahead of the next year’s vote, where Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigrant, anti-European Union National Front hopes to repeat anti-establishment upsets seens earlier this year in Britain, the United States, and this week in Italy. “The world has

changed drastically in a matter of months,” JeanMarie Le Guen, a minister and close ally of Valls, told RTL radio. “The extreme right is on the threshold of power. The right is more brutal than anything we’ve ever seen.” Italian voters last weekend rejected constitutional reforms proposed by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, forcing him to resign and opening period of political uncertainty there. That followed the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president and a referendum where Britons

which acted as a conduit between Choi and the companies, said that “from the perspective of a business leader, it is hard to ignore the government’s requests, especially in Korean society”. Such a public spectacle involving top corporate leaders is rare in South Korea. The chaebol account for about 80 per cent of the economy and are closely enmeshed with the government. Their dominance has

bred an imperious attitude among executives, who are regularly convicted for graft or tax offences, only to be pardoned later by sympathetic governments. For much of the parliamentary inquiry the focus was on Lee and whether payments made by Samsung were intended to shore up support for a controversial merger between two affiliates last year. The deal, which was widely criticised for benefiting the founding family over minority shareholders, was seen as vital for Lee to solidify his place as heir of South Korea’s largest conglomerate. Lee denied the merger was linked to his succession. Meanwhile, a group of 5,000 South Koreans on Tuesday filed a suit against Park, demanding compensation of about $400 each for the mental suffering she has caused as a result of the scandal. The president should be held legally responsible for “committing criminal activities using the status of the president,” said their lawyer, according to the state-run Yonhap news agency.

London, Dec 6 (Agencies): Egyptian authorities have arrested doctors, nurses and professors suspected of being involved in an international organ trafficking ring. The arrests of at least 25 people on Tuesday also included organ buyers and middlemen, the country’s Administrative Control Authority said. Authorities also found “millions of dollars and gold bullion”. It is illegal to purchase organs in Egypt, but poverty drives some to sell their body parts. The Administrative Control Authority, a powerful anti-corruption body, claimed the network targeted on Tuesday was “made up of Egyptians and Arabs taking advantage of some of the citizens’ difficult economic conditions so that they buy their human organs and sell [them] for large sums of money”. The statement on the government website added that the group was “the largest international network for trading human organs”. It is said the investigation, which also involved the health ministry, focused on a group of private hospitals and health centres, both licensed and unlicensed, where transplants and organ-harvesting took place, according to the Reuters news agency.

Seoul, Dec 6 (Agencies): Corporate South Korea found itself on trial on Tuesday as the country’s top business leaders were upbraided by lawmakers for their roles in a sprawling corruption scandal that looks set to topple the president. In an unprecedented televised event, the country’s most powerful men, including Samsung heir apparent Jay Y Lee and Hyundai Motor chairman Chung Mong-koo, were hauled before a parliamentary inquiry investigating whether they had benefited from multimillion-dollar donations made to presidential aides. The inter rogation came as Park Geun-hye, the country’s first female leader, signalled she would step down in April unless an impeachment vote later this week forces an earlier exit. The president has been facing mounting pressure since prosecutors last month accused her of conspiring with a longtime confidante, as well as several aides, to extort more than $65m from top companies. eyonce has scooped nine nominations for the 2017 Grammy Awards, extending her lead as the most-nominated woman in Grammys history. The star is up for the main prize, album of the year, for her ambitious visual album, Lemonade, which tackles themes of race and female identity. Her single Formation is also up for song and record of the year. In all three categories, she is up against Adele - who previously won the ceremony’s top three prizes in 2012. B e yo n c e n ow h a s 62 Grammy nominations across her work as a solo artist and as part of Destiny’s Child, making her

the fourth most-nominated artist ever. She has won 20 trophies altogether, although she has yet to clinch the album of the year prize, having been beaten to the title by Beck in 2015 - much to the disgust of Kanye West, who stormed the stage in protest. West receives eight nominations this year for

his album The Life Of Pablo - all in the rap categories. Drake and Rihanna also have eight nominations, including three for their hit collaboration, Work. Making Grammy history is Chicago-born musician Chance The Rapper, whose album Coloring Book is the first streaming-only record to be recognised by the Recording Academy.

He achieves seven nominations, including best new artist, without ever releasing a physical album or digital download. Beyonce and Adele go head to head with Justin Bieber, Drake and country star Sturgill Simpson in the best album category. If Adele wins, she will become only the second woman to receive the best album prize twice, after Taylor Swift. Notably absent from the shortlist is David Bowie, who was tipped to win for his critically-acclaimed Blackstar album. The record does make an appearance in the best alternative album category, as does Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool.

Mumbai, Dec 6 (Agencies): England are bidding to keep the India series alive with victory in this week’s fourth Test in Mumbai but defeat will raise further questions about Alastair Cook’s future as captain. The visitors must win at the Wankhede Stadium to stop top-ranked India from sealing the five-Test series with a match to spare following two consecutive defeats.

Virat Kohli’s side won by eight wickets in Mohali last week to take an unbeatable 2-0 series lead after victory in Viskhapatnam followed a draw in the first Test at Rajkot. Anything less than a victory for England would see India exact revenge for their 2012 home series loss to Cook’s men and add to uncertainty surrounding the English skipper. His future as captain has been in doubt

since he admitted just before the tour that he could quit at the end of the Test series because he was finding it hard to be apart from his family for long periods. After becoming a father for a second time last month, the 31-yearold left-handed opener said he found the long England tours difficult, while insisting he remained deeply proud of captaining his country. Despite England’s travails in India, coach Trevor Bayliss said he expected Cook to be in charge for the Ashes tour at the end of 2017. “He’s talking about the next Ashes series and being out in Australia,” Bayliss told BBC Sport. “Sometimes there are little comments made along the way and they get blown out of all proportion. He’s certainly up for the fight. I haven’t had any discussion with him any other way and that’s what we’ve been working towards,” the Australian coach added. Cook also received the backing of batsman Joe Root who hailed his skipper as a “brilliant leader”.

Middlesbrough down Hull City 1-0

Ramirez managed to get clear of Adama Diomande, who was supposed to be marking him, and score after jumping highest.

Lo n d o n, D e c 6 (Agencies): A goal from Gaston Ramirez earned Middlesbrough a well deserved 1-0 victory over a flat Hull City at the Riverside Stadium. The win - just the second Boro have registered in the Premier League since August - moves them up to 13th in the table and was one which they fully merited as they outplayed

a Hull side who have now lost eight of their last 10 and look certainties to be fighting a relegation battle all season long. Viktor Fischer’s corner found Ramirez unmarked in the box and the former Hull loanee nodded home for the game’s only goal. The goal came on the hour-mark but it had been a long time coming, the Tigers offering little attacking

threat with only the hosts’ poor finishing preventing them from leading until that point. A l va r o N e g r e d o, fresh from a brace in their draw at Leicester City last time out, missed a couple of good opportunities, firing over from 10 yards on one occasion while he also made a mess of a close range headed chance, timing his jump

completely wrong. Fischer had the ball in the back of the net in the first half but the linesman, correctly, ruled it out for offside. It took Mike Phelan’s side until stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes to actually apply some pressure with Adama Diomande sliding onto Ahmed Elmohamady’s flick but the ball went just wide of the post. The home side had taken their foot off the gas in the closing stages allowing Hull to believe they could fashion an unlikely equaliser but Boro held on for a vital win. Aitor Karanka’s men now lie four points above the drop zone and with only one defeat in the last six they are beginning to prove that they could well survive in the top flight this season. For Hull however, it looks like a long battle ahead and on this evidence it is a battle they will probably lose.

Hornbill Naga Wrestling C’ship today D ima p u r , D e c 6 (NPN): The 10th International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship 2016 will be held on December 7 at Amphitheatre Kisama, Naga Heritage Village. Timikha Koza, president, Tenyimia Public Organization will grace the event as the chief guest. The competition will witness prominent wrestlers from Angami, Chakhesang and Zeliang tribes. The winner of the competition will received a cash prize of Rs. 80000 while the runner-up will received Rs.50000. The losing semi finalist, quarter finalist and pre quarter finalist will received Rs. 20000, Rs. 5000 and 2000 respectively. There will also be spot registration for locals and tourists. Meanwhile, the organisers has informed all the program officials to be at the venue by 8:00 am.

IPL 2017 edition in real danger: BCCI

MUMBAI, Dec 6 (Agencies): The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is walking on thin ice as far as the 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is concerned. With the T20 tournament scheduled to begin on April 8, there are only four months left before the first ball is scheduled to be bowled, and the BCCI says “not a single contract has been signed yet.” From hosting of the player auctions to planning logistics, hiring of creative and management agencies, advertising the league and signing up with a host of vendors for the two-month long cricketing extravaganza have been pending for more than two months already. After the Supreme Court hearing got adjourned from December 5 to 9 on Monday, a top BCCI official admitted that the board was staring into an abyss as far as IPL is concerned. “The Inter national Management Group (IMG) begins work on IPL every year at the beginning

of October. They’re not on board yet. The opening ceremony is usually planned five to six months in advance. There’s no word on it. It is absolute chaos,” a senior BCCI functionary told TOI on Monday. Another source revealed that communication with the Justice RM Lodha Committee in this regard elicited a one-line response: “Wait till December 5.” The BCCI, however, has a flurry of questions which they’ve been fretting over. “The (Lodha) committee was asked to appoint an auditor and set threshold limit for contracts. The board even requested the committee for a meeting. But nothing has moved. I hope the committee doesn’t expect us to call some DJ Sunny from Bhatinda (pun intended) to perform at the opening ceremony. And if the BCCI needs to match its own standards set in the past for IPL, it needs time to work on things. Given the present uncertainty, the tournament is in real danger,” the official added.

Broadcasters, sponsors and vendors usually begin work on sports properties at least 270 days before the start of the event. That’s a calculated window during which contracts are signed and measures are finalised. BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke had written to the Lodha Committee on October 28 highlighting that the image of the board as a professional organisation had taken a serious beating because of the prevailing uncertainty and devalued revenues. The BCCI now says continuation of uncertainty will further strain BCCI’s revenue streams. Shirke had written to the committee highlighting a long list of vendors that had to be appointed going into the IPL 2017 season. “It’s been a month and a week now and nothing has actually moved,” the official pointed out. The Lodha Committee, meanwhile, has shut all lines of communication as it waits for the Supreme Court to hear the matter on December 9.

Roger Federer

Serena Williams

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS): The current cash crunch in the country, following the November 8 demonetisation has led

to multiple Grand Slam champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams pulling out of this season’s International Premier Ten-

nis League (IPTL), the organisers announced on Tuesday. Both Federer and Serena were scheduled to play the final leg of the $100,000 tournament in Hyderabad from December 9 to 11. The Swiss star was to play for the Indian Aces while Williams was signed by the Singapore Slammers. “We are sad to announce that Roger Federer and Serena Williams won’t participate at this year’s IPTL,” founder and man-

aging director of IPTL, Mahesh Bhupathi, said in a statement. “We have had challenges this year, and we were hoping to get past them”. “With the current economic climate in India and the uncertainty of spending money, I reached out to both Roger and Serena to explain the situation. They have been both been very supportive of the IPTL the first two seasons and we look forward to bring them

in future years.” The IPTL could have been Federer’s comeback tournament ahead of the Australian Open early next year. He has been out since July following a knee surgery. Williams, on the other hand, last played at the US Open in September, following which she has stayed away from the circuit with a shoulder injury. She was scheduled to appear in the Singapore leg starting on Tuesday.
