Medziphema recorded ‘nil’ nomination for the municipal and town council election respectively ; while 14 candidates filed their nominations at the DC office Dimapur for the Chumukedima town council. Like the Angami Public Organisation(APO) and also Ao Senden all apex tribe organisations had called for boycott of the polls against the NPF-led DAN government’s hasty decision to hold civic polls without addressing serious apprehensions raised by apex tribe organisations pertaining to various aspects of the Nagaland

Municipal Act 2001. The handling of the ULB election by the NPF-led DAN government has resulted in a confrontation with all Naga tribes. The pros and cons in ascertaining - lengthy and expensive court battle and apprehensive of losing the case- did not warrant the hasty decision. The NPF-led DAN government appeared to have plunged headlong in issuing notification for civic polls mainly to get significant fund from the Ministry of Urban Development, once notification for holding civic polls has been issued.

Mokokchung: In Mokokchung, the Ao Senden also called for a ‘lightning bandh’ from 11 a.m.to 5 p.m. which paralysed the town and preventing aspirants form filing their nomination papers. Border fencing an attempt to rewrite Naga history, says NH

DIMAPUR, JAN 7 (NPN): Construction of border fencing in the heart of Pangsha was an attempt by India and Myanmar to rewrite the history of Nagas, the Naga Hoho (NH) has said and likened the move to “state sponsored race divisions and cultural intrusion by aliens.” NH through its media cell said Nagas cannot allow any authority to divide their history and remove the feeling of oneness among the Naga family. It said that Naga people have the absolute rights to protect their ancestral land and no man made authority should segregate Nagas into pieces basing on the fact that Nagas were bound to protect their identity and territory. “Unsurprisingly, Nagas cannot accept the imaginary boundary fencing between India and Myanmar,” NH said.

Referring to the McMahon Line, a line agreed to by Britain and Tibet as part of the Simla Accord, the NH said a treaty signed in 1914 has become the basis of boundary demarcation between India and Myanmar and thus the Nagas were forced to divide in the Eastern sector. NH further said it was an “undeniable fact” that Nagas were divided through unilateral decision of Nehru and U-Nu through aerial survey in 1953 of which the Nagas did not accept till today. It pointed out that there was no cultural divide or ideological differences among the Nagas to live together, adding that they have the inherent rights since time immemorial to be together. NH also said Naga people have been living together in their own land even before India and Myan-

mar achieved the status of sovereign states. It said people and their land can be divided only when there was lack of history or evidence with different cultures, language and practices occupying different territories. Therefore, the NH has appeal to the Home Ministry to redraw the policies in consultation with Myanmar and listen to the cry of Naga people by fulfilling their wishes and dreams without further delay. Further, NH appealed to the state government to bring out tangible solution with the Centre, not forgetting the 1834 Naga Hills Map, which it said “may be acceptable to the Nagas.” It also underlined that Naga people irrespective of tribes or region should simultaneously put collective efforts to restore their inherent rights.

Nomination date extended till January 9 DIMAPUR, JAN 7 (NPN): The State Election Commission (SEC), in partial modification of the Election programme notified on December 21, 2016, has extended the time for filing of nominations for the forthcoming civic body polls to January 9, 2017 till 3 p.m. Informing this through a notification, the State Election Commissioner (SEC), Sentiyanger Imchen however stated that the extension period would be applicable only in those Municipal/Town Councils where no nominations were received till January 7. The time period was extended after the Commission took note that some candidates were not able to file their nominations due to the boycott through obstructions, bandhs and other forms of threat and intimidation, Imchen stated. SEC further informed that the list of nominated candidates would be posted on January 9 after 3 p.m. Kohima Correspondent adds: Sentiyanger Imchen, talking to media persons here on Saturday evening also informed that the Commission, based on the requests of the Returning Officers, has al-

DIMAPUR, JAN 7 (NPN): Hitting out at the NPFled DAN government for totally ignoring the voices of the Naga people and by choosing to blatantly extend the time for filing of nominations till January 9, the Angami Youth Organization (AYO) on Saturday resolved to strictly impose a total bandh in Kohima and Medziphema town on January 9, 2017 from 7 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., AYO president, Neinguvoto Krose informed through a press note. Apart from failing to address and resolve the issues that had been raised, AYO said the government rather chose to blatantly extend the time for filing of nominations with no sense of acknowledgement. “Total lack of self-respect and irresponsible complacency on the part of Nagaland government has left us wondering what welfare governance is governing our state,” Krose stated. With no options left, Krose said AYO resolved to launch a public movement inviting all and sundry to join against injustice and to defend democratic values of fairness and freedom. AYO has asked all business establishments to down shutters and restricted pedestrian and vehicular movements. However, medical, paramilitary forces, media and district administration officials have been exempted from the purview of the bandh. “Police in private and government vehicles won’t be allowed to ply,” AYO stated. However, the bandh would not be enforced along the highways, no travel restrictions on Wokha, Phek and Imphal highway, AYO stated. Those vehicles moving between Dimapur have been directed to take the paramedical-Jail colony-New ministers hill-CathedralLerie road. Colony youths along the said routes have been asked are to guide the travelers. Further, vehicles travelling between DimapurWokha-Phek have been directed to take Naga Hospital-Naga Bazaar-Census Office-New Sect-Kohima College-DBS route. (Cont’d on p-7)

Akhilesh Yadav takes CVC reaffirms Jan 2 resolution battle for Cycle to EC NEW DELHI, JAN 7 (AGENCIES): The Akhilesh Yadav faction of the Samajwadi Party moved a step closer to claiming the party’s cycle symbol on Saturday when Ram Gopal Yadav submitted signed affidavits of over 4,000 party delegates to the Election Commission. Ram Gopal submitted the affidavits of 4,716 delegates out of a total of 5,731. “This is overwhelming majority... Over 90% of the Samajwadi Party is led by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav,” Ram Gopal said. These delegates include majority of the party’s elected legislators, parliamentarians, councilors and members of its National Convention. “The Election Commission gave us time till January 9 but we have submitted all relevant documents,” Ram Gopal said. The documents were brought to the poll panel’s office in seven cartons and run into more than 1.5 lakh pages. Claiming the party’s cycle symbol, Ram Gopal said: “Prima facie the SP led by Akhilesh Yadav is the real Samajwadi Party.” A copy of the affidavits was also sent to Mulayam.

DIMAPUR, Jan 7 (NPN): As resolved by the joint meeting of Chumoukedima Village Council (CVC) and leaders of 16 tribal units on January 2, 2017 at Chumoukedima village council hall, the CVC has reiterated that no individual or party was allowed to file nomination. In a press release, CVC chairman Razouvotuo Chatsu reminded all individuals or parties that the January 2 joint resolution was not just issued in letter, but it would be implemented/imposed in spirit also. CVC therefore cautioned that anyone who violated the resolution would be forced to leave Chumoukedima area, if they did not withdraw their nomination papers. The council also asserted that no one would be allowed to function from CTC office as council members until the issue or municipal/ town council Act was settled with the state government by all the frontal Naga tribal leaders i.e. Naga Hoho, ENPO, NTC, Ao Seden, Sumi Hoho, APO etc. It stated that those candidates who have filed nomination have willfully violated the public resolu-

tion, adding that the Chumoukedima public would not regard them as public leaders or town council members. Chumoukedima Village Council has however stated that the whole public of Chumoukedima fully stood behind the intending candidates (who stood with the public resolution steadfastly) in all their endeavours even in days to come. Further, CVC and 16 tribal unit leaders of Chumoukedima have thanked all who supported the issue from day one till date and requested them to come forward voluntarily if the need arose even in the future. Meanwhile, objecting to the notification issued by the EAC/returning officer Chumukedima concerning submission of nomination papers, the CVC has asked whether Nagaland Municipal Election Rule empowered EAC to shift nomination paper submission to Dimapur for Chumoukedima. Also, questioning if there was such discretion or option, the CVC asked “why the EAC Chumoukedima had issued the notification only for the last day i.e. 7th Jan 2017.”

NEW DELHI, JAN 7 (PTI): The Budget session of Parliament was today convened to start from January 31, a day before the Union Budget is likely to be presented. President Pranab Mukherjee has summoned the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha to meet on January 31, according to official notifications. “Subject to exigencies of government Business”, the session will conclude on April 12, said a statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat. journ on 9th February, 2017 to meet again on 9th March, 2017,” said the Lok Sabha Secretariat statement. The announcement comes even as opposition parties have raised objections to the presentation of the budget on February 1 before Assembly polls in five states on the ground that it will tilt the balance in government’s favour because it can woo voters with sops. rchitecture is a social action as every single building either ‘gives’ or ‘takes’ from the social milieu. Architects create public domains or spaces that stimulate learning.” This is triggered by the institutes which offer the proper teaching-learning experience to the students and hence prepare them preserve the sanctity of the profession as well as the society. Guwahati College of Architecture is one such institute which K

Y M C

has already set its foot in this field of imparting educational as well as socio-cultural values to its students and make them ready to face every emerging trend and challenge. GCA, established in 2006 by architect Abani Das has visualised this very aspect for the need of such a course in architecture and strived all his way towards the first architectural institute for the whole of North East India. The college was developed with a purpose

to provide an academically strong platform to students who not only wanted to make a good career but also wanted to leave an enduring impression in the field of architecture. The college has recently been shifted to its new campus named as Sri Sarbeswar Das Knowledge Campus, after Late Sarbeswar Das, father of the Managing Trustee Ar.Abani Das. The campus envisions a wide range of vibrancy in edu-

cation, physical as well as intellectual aspects of the students. The authority believes in bringing together aesthetics, design, comfort, planning, endurance, and solid technical expertise in amalgamation. The college also strives to bridge the gap between raw talent, and skilled experts, putting together Technolog y, Humanities and Aesthetics into a special curriculum, most suited for the students of today and tomorrow, as we focus on holistic development. GCA aims to provide its students with all the needful facilities and a campus, which is amidst the beautiful region of Assam, allowing them to grow and harness their skills. GCA has been able to make a career in architecture, attainable by providing the necessary platform to foster the upcoming talent. After B.Arch, the students are encouraged to pursue higher education and other research work. To provide the scope of higher education, the college also has M.Arch course in Urban Design. Other postgraduate courses are also to start in the near future. The Urban Design

Department of the college aims to address various city level issues occurring in the present context and thrives to provide solutions for them. The Department has taken initiative in raising public awareness for various social issues too for the development to the society and the city as a whole. With the concept of smart city approaching fast to our own city of Guwahati, there has emerged a need for smarter design solutions to all sorts of urban problems arising in the city. Smart city encompasses various spheres of development such as smart infrastructure, smart governance, smart technology, smart transport and communication. But for a smart city to remain smart, it is necessary for the inhabitants to be smart. Hence education of the citizens should be provided in a way to create public awareness. In this, the institutions play an active role in creating public awareness. Guwahati College of Architecture is one such institution, which is preparing its students with the required knowledge to deal with urban problems in a smarter way. The college has initiated sur-

veys of various city parts sorting out various issues which are going to create havocs in the long run and thus are required to provide smart design solutions. The Urban Design cell of the college seeks to identify issues occurring in the city and find what possible solutions shall best be designed to tackle those problems. The students are also arranging certain rallies, walkathon in order to create public awareness about the disorders in the society and how to deal with them. Thus as a whole, the college is offering a holistic approach to the problems of the physical city and its inhabitants, while preparing the students to stand apart in the long run. In 2015 the college has started with another department named as Guwahati College of Design which provides courses like B.Sc in Interior Design and B.Sc. in Fashion and Textile Design. The North-East Regions of India is famous for its Arts and Crafts and fascinating nature. We work on the personalities of our students to enable them to be creators and independent thinkers. Our vision is to train and educate budding

architects of high caliber, and to become the center of perfection in architectural studies. GCA has collaborated with a number of institutes to give its students the correct exposure and experience. Collaboration has been formed between Guwahati College of Architecture and Kamala Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environment Studies, Mumbai, for combined study tours to various heritage places, which are documented and used as library resources for academic purposes. Guwahati College of Architecture in collaboration with KRVIA, Mumbai has documented various places and their architectural heritage such as the Satras of Majuli, Barpeta Satra, Monasteries of West Sikkim, Panchmura villag in West Bengal, Shillong, Allahabad and the structures of Lucknow. The documented structures are then recorded in the form of architectural drawings which are then exhibited in the college campus. A publication named ‘Imprints’ is then done each year based on the exhibition work which is further used for various academic and research purposes.

The college also have signed an MOU with CEPT University, Ahmedabad to enhance the educational programme and are looking forward to having a student/ teacher exchange programmes in the near future. Fo r e s i g h t e d w i t h learning environment in the field of architecture as well as various other related areas, the campus is located in a 10 acre site, surrounded by lush greens of the Deepor Beel and the beautiful hills all around it, the best Nature could provide. The current academic building is designed considering the surrounding environment and is energy efficient with proper natural light and ventilation. The campus has vast open areas for extra-curricular activities for the students as well as many more experimental informal teaching-learning areas for the students as well as the faculties. The sense of harmony and peace within the campus, as merged with the surrounding, it enlightens the young minds to grow up into sensible architects and in a way to be grounded human beings. Arunachal BJP trashes report of replacing Khandu

Itanagar, Jan 7 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh Unit of BJP today denied any move to replace incumbent Chief Minister Pema Khandu as speculated in a section of media. “Pema Khandu enjoys absolute support of 47 BJP and 2 Independent MLAs in the 60 member House. The state BJP endorsed full support to the leadership of Khandu,” state BJP President Tapir Gao in a statement said. According to report in a national daily, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju’s name is doing the rounds as the next possible Chief Minister of the state. State BJP President Tapir Gao is also said to be in the race, the report stated. Gao said that there is absolutely no question

of replacing Khandu who enjoys full support of entire BJP party. “We in BJP do not have culture of high command replacing the political leadership in the state. The speculations so made and printed by some media houses are pure rumours that are being spread by political opponents who are playing an outdated political trick to confuse people and to vent out their sheer frustration,” he claimed. Gao further appealed to the media to be more sensible in bringing out such news items by properly verifying and authenticating the source as it creates a sense of political insecurity in the state which has seen so much of political turmoil in the recent past.

Addressing a press conference in Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong, NSM general secretary Shiv Narayan Paul said the three militant groups have targeted the innocent and peace-loving Hindi and Bengali speaking people without any valid reason. While alleging that the ultra organizations are making false propaganda against the people, Paul urged the three militant groups not to target the innocent people but to “fight with the government for resolving their issues.”

IMPHAL, Jan 7: Manipur government is understood to have written a letter to the Centre for initiating a tripartite talk with the agitating United Naga Council (UNC). The UNC has been imposing indefinite economic blockade of the national highways in the state since November 1, triggering artificial scarcity of essential commodities, particularly petroleum products which Manipur solely depend from outside the state. A highly reliable source said that state chief secretary O Nabakishore Singh has written a letter to the secretary of the Union ministry of home affairs for initiating a talk between Centre, state and UNC at the earliest. The proposal for talk from the state government

people will come under grave threat.” Mahanta said the BJP once supported the Assam Agitation and even its veteran leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee extended his support to the Agitation. All political and social groups also accepted the clauses of the Assam Accord, which was the result of the Assam Agitation, added Mahanta. “When the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was raised by the then UPA government in the Parliament, the then AGP MPs Kumar Dipak Das and Birendra Prasad Baishya strongly opposed it. But now, the BJP is trying to pass the Bill,” said the former chief minister. It may be mentioned that the

side came up at a time when the model code of conduct for the March elections has already been enforced in the state. Even as the Election Commission of India had announced poll schedule for Manipur along with four other states of the country, UNC has decided to continue with blockade. In a talk with reporters of local papers on January 4, the same day on which the ECI announced poll schedule, UNC general secretary S Milan has said that the Naga body believes in resolving any issue through dialogue. However, he had added that there should be a basis and a clear agenda for holding a dialogue and demanded release of UNC president and his publicity secretary asserting that it would not be possible to hold talk without their leaders.

Asom Andolan Sangrami Manch filed a PIL in the Gauhati High Court, seeking total implementation of the Assam Accord. The PIL mainly put stress on the deportation of illegal foreigners from Assam and giving constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of the State. The State government filed its affidavit in the Gauhati High Court against the PIL of the Manch, but the Central government has not yet filed its affidavit in the Court, as said by the Manch. In the press meet, ex-MP Kumar Dipak Das, chief convener of the Manch, Barki Prasad Telenga, convener of the Manch, and few others were present.

IMPHAL, Jan 7: All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the party which opened its account in Manipur in 2012 elections by winning seven seats, Friday announced that it would be fielding candidate in all the 60 seats in the ensuing state election. By winning seven seats in the 2012 election, AITC became the second largest party after the Congress who secured 42 seats. However, during the five year period, the party lost all its legislators in different period of time.

Despite the setback it has suffered, the party is planning to field its candidate in all the 60 seats in the ensuing two-phase elections to the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly. “We will fight the elections by fielding candidate in all the 60 seats,” said AITC vicepresident Mukul Roy who arrived here in Imphal to chalk out party strategy for the upcoming poll. He also termed Congress and BJP as power hunger parties. These parties never bother for the welfare of the people except cheating people for power, he alleged.

BENGALURU, Jan 7 (Agencies): Barely a week after Bengaluru was put to shame by incidents of mass molestation and assault on New Year’s Eve, another incident of alleged molestation has come to light. A young woman wearing a burqa was reportedly attacked by a man early morning on Friday in North Bengaluru’s KG Haali residential area as she was walking on her way to work. It is believed that the man followed her, grabbed her and pinned her to the ground as she screamed for help. She received abrasions on her legs, arms and her tongue. The attacker reportedly ran away when the barking of street dogs raised an alarm. Residents then rushed to the help the woman and took her to a Hospital. The police said they have launched a search for the suspect. On December 31, in a similar incident, a young woman walking home was approached by two men on a scooter. Alarmed, she tried to side-step them, but one man disembarked and attacked her. As she fought back, he pushed her towards the other man. He molested her, and then threw her hard to the ground.

Chandigarh, Jan 7 (PTI): Former Army chief Gen (retd) JJ Singh on Saturday joined the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and is set to take on Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh from Patiala Urban seat in the February 4 state Assembly elections. Mittal said Sakshi Maharaj had not only violated the Model Code of Conduct but also the law and asked the EC to view his remarks as per recent judgment of Supreme Court prohibiting seeking votes in the name of religion. Congress leader KC Mittal said Sakshi Maharaj’s speech is “offensive” as it is based on caste and religion and goes against the recent Supreme Court judgement. Condemning the comments, JD-U leader K C Tyagi termed them as the first major violation of the Supreme Court guidelines outlined on Monday on use of religion in politics. “Recently the Supreme Court and the Chief Election Commission laid down some guidelines for model code of conduct, including not to use religion, caste and

Meerut, Jan 7 (PTI): BJP leader Sakshi Maharaj was today booked for allegedly hurting religious feelings after he indirectly blamed Muslims for the population growth in the country that sparked a controversy, days after Supreme Court outlawed seeking votes in the name of religion or caste. As the outburst by the MP from Unnao in pollbound Uttar Pradesh drew strong condemnation from opposition parties, the BJP distanced itself from the comments made at a ‘sant sammelan’ here yesterday while the Election Commission sought a report from Meerut district administration. Beijing, Jan 7 (Agencies): In a rare dissent against official policy, a former Chinese diplomat who served in India has sought change in China’s repeated efforts to block India’s bid to slap a UN ban on JeM leader Masood Azhar arguing that he is a terrorist and Beijing should “adjust” its stand accordingly. In his lengthy blog on social media WeChat public account about the India-China stalemate over Azhar, Mao Siwei who previously served as China’s Consul General in Kolkata - said China should take advantage of India’s complaint against Azhar and “get rid of the passive diplomatic situation” between the two countries. The blog published on December 28, two days before China refused to lift its technical hold on India’s application, allowing it to lapse, Mao highlighted the history of Pakistan- based terror organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-eMuhammad and how they carried out violent attacks whenever India and Pakistan made efforts to normalise their relations.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in June last year filed a fresh charge sheet against James and three others, including the company, in its ongoing money laundering probe into the helicopter deal. According to the ED, Media Exim is a shell company of James and allegedly incorporated for facilitating transactions of kickbacks paid to James by Finmeccanica, a group firm of AgustaWestland. James allegedly received around Rs 225 crore as kickbacks from AgustaWestland for the deal inked for the purchase of 12 helicopters in the guise of transactions for performing multiple work

contracts in the country. The agency is said to have found that of the kickbacks received by James, Rs 6.33 crore was routed to India through his shell company Media Exim from his Dubai-based Global Services FZE. “Nanda and Subramaniyam were appointed Directors of Media Exim Pvt. Ltd., who willingly and knowingly connived with James and helped him in acquiring immovable and movable properties or assets in Delhi, which have already been attached,” the ED said. James and other alleged middlemen Guido Ralph Haschke and Carlo Gerosa have been named as accused in separate investigations conducted by the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Depraved minds

esides being known as the ‘Garden City’ once not too long ago, Bengaluru was also known as a vibrant liberal and cosmopolitan city inhabited by people who were kind, helpful and respectful. However, today Bengaluru is no longer the ‘Garden City’ it was as the greenery has almost disappeared and given way to multi-storeyed buildings and structures. The tag of being liberal and cosmopolitan is also almost disappearing as lumpen elements have begun to destroy that concept by targeting religious minorities and women. The other face of Bengaluru that used to resurrect in the form of acts of moral Talibanism has become almost an accepted and not too infrequent occurrence. This was again reminded and in a bigger was on eve of New Year 2017 when a huge mob molested women with impunity even as 1500 policemen deployed in the area looked on as the horror scenes unfolded. The particular spots- M.G.Road and Brigade Road - which are considered upper end with pubs, restaurants and trendy shops being the favourite places of the youth. Bangalore has hogged the national headlines for three days now. A considerable population of the country has been debating whether the garden city is safe for women or not. Bengaluru doesn’t know diddly-squat about celebrating - it only knows hooliganism. Just like in Delhi, women who dare to have a good time in public, often end up getting mauled. This does not seem like the Bangalore that many knew. When it comes to the safety of women, Bengaluru is no better than Delhi, and Saturday night was its final confirmation. Hooliganism shows up in Bengaluru time and again and this happens especially when women dare to have a good time in public, often end up getting mauled. However, despite “elaborate” security arrangements, women were molested, and children scared out of their wits, while male friends and relatives had a tough time protecting them from unruly men. And all this happened despite the 1,500 policemen deployed in the area. The area has always been a potentially risky place for any other reveller especially women. Such scenes are also now rare in places like Delhi and few other Indian cities. Hooliganism in Indian metro cities is a diseases that needs to be treated with seriousness. India has earned a notorious reputation as a totally unsafe country for foreign female tourists. India ranks as No.1 as the most dangerous and Obnoxious country for a woman to travel. It is indeed unfortunate that a country that has so much to offer by way of spectacular cultural sites, art, history and food, is being dubbed as a rape nation. However, the situation has grown worse, not better. Last year it was noted that there were UK and US travel advisories and warnings on travel to India and Australia, Canada, and many other governments as well as travel agencies backed by the Japanese and Chinese governments have also issued travel advisories and warnings. Rape rates are 26.7%, according to the latest statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The United States categorically stated that women should not travel alone in India due to the likelihood of sexual assault and harassment but also lists many other hazards in India (including infectious disease, intra-religious violence, terrorism etc.) The obvious conclusion is that there is something wrong about Indian males and this needs to be constantly exposed by the media and tackled by the law.

DailyDevotion Jesus

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?” —John 14:9 These words were not spoken as a rebuke, nor even with surprise; Jesus was encouraging Philip to draw closer. Yet the last person we get intimate with is Jesus. Before Pentecost the disciples knew Jesus as the One who gave them power to conquer demons and to bring about a revival (see Luke 10:18-20). It was a wonderful intimacy, but there was a much closer intimacy to come: “…I have called you friends…” (John 15:15). True friendship is rare on earth. It means identifying with someone in thought, heart, and spirit. The whole experience of life is designed to enable us to enter into this closest relationship with Jesus Christ. We receive His blessings and know His Word, but do we really know Him? Jesus said, “It is to your advantage that I go away…” (John 16:7). He left that relationship to lead them even closer. It is a joy to Jesus when a disciple takes time to walk more intimately with Him. The bearing of fruit is always shown in Scripture to be the visible result of an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ (see John 15:1-4). Once we get intimate with Jesus we are never lonely and we never lack for understanding or compassion. We can continually pour out our hearts to Him without being perceived as overly emotional or pitiful. The Christian who is truly intimate with Jesus will never draw attention to himself but will only show the evidence of a life where Jesus is completely in control. This is the outcome of allowing Jesus to satisfy every area of life to its depth. The picture resulting from such a life is that of the strong, calm balance that our Lord gives to those who are intimate with Him.

Post-mortem perspective on the role of Why does anybody need aBiblical woman in society and nationhood special political favor?

here is no justice or rationale of reasonable human answer for making a group of People a despised low Caste by Religion and then Government compensate them with special undemocratic political favoritism. A welfare Government provides certain economic Privileges or Concession to certain economically weak Class of the Citizens with reserved quota for Seats in the Educational Institutes or Government Services in Employment. Government may also provide for Senior Citizens and for physically old infirm and no longer able to earn a decent livelihood with privileges of Confessional Rate of Fare in the Rail or in the Airplane. These special treatments are rationale and reasonable in a Welfare human Society. However, the 8 yards distance between the Goal Posts in the Soccer Field is the same for both of every groups of Players educated or not, rich or poor and Male or Female Gender. The Marathon Race of 26 miles 385 Yards distance is the same for both the Male and the Female. The Circumference of the Ball is the same for both the Genders in the Football Game. The Discuss and the Shot-put Iron ball and Hammer throw should be of the same Weight for both Male and Female Athletes than lighter and smaller for the Females! But what can be more unjust and lack of every human rationale than to give special political Treatment to certain group among Equals? In Politics, there is no Separate Democracy System for one Gender and a separate System for another Gender. The Rules of Democracy and democratic Political System is the same for both the male and female Gender. There was serious differences of political Opinion between Mahatma Gandhi

nclusiveness of all of the Nagas in the settlement is possible only in unity of all the Nagas and unity of the Nagas is possible only without discrimination of any of the Nagas. In the Naga National Movement for Naga Nationhood, all of the Nagas did not spontaneously rise up together at the same time but gradually momentum was gained and at last all came together only. Some tribes were the first, some tribes came later and some were the last to join the

and Dr. Bhimraj Ambedkar –the Author of the Constitution of India. Ambedkar was a Dalit and wanted Separate Seat and Voting for the Schedule Castes election by the Dalits themselves. The British Government would have granted the demand but Mahatma Gandhi vehemently said the Dalits alone could not have a separate democratic favor in Democracy. If the Dalits are down trodden; the reasons for its being down trodden should be removed rather than compensate the unjust social practice with unjust political favor. Females are treated a Weaker Gender in the Hindus Matriarchal Society like in the Nagas. The individual Hindus Males are of no more or no less compassionate than a Naga Man, but the Hindu Religion looks at the Girl not only the weaker gender but also a lower gender. The degree of female feticides in the Hindu Society in India gives an indication of the insurmountable attitude towards the Female in the Hindu Society. Another indication of the attitude on the female among the Hindus is the unfavorable practice of Dowry in which the girl’s father gives money and other valuables to the husband for the marriage of his daughter as if giving his daughter alone is not sufficient enough valuable unless accompanied with presents of gold and silver. The Naga Matriarchal society also looks at the girl as the weaker Gender but the Naga never looks down at the woman. The Sumis in the Naga Society has a custom of declaring a Bride Price for the marriage of the girl. However, the Bride Price in the Sumi Case is indication of the degree of Honor the Girl has rather than to add value to her. The Government of India greatly feels uncomfortable at

movement but at last all of the Naga tribes joined the movement together and whether earlier or later or latest all became one fold accepting one another and all tribes took part in NNC and FGN without discrimination. When the first talk took place between the Gol and the FGN, the Nagas were in unity and solidarity. NNC/ FGN was all in all in the National Movement. After the failure of the talk, the National workers were divided and formed factional

the unjust injustice treatment of the Woman folks in the Hindu Society, but it does not have any Idea to compensate the Injustice to the Female Gender. Therefore, Government is introducing Political Favoritism for the Female Gender. It is also not for nothing! The Naga does not have any uncomfortable feeling of injustice towards the Female Gender because it his heart he has no such attitudinal feeling. It is very unwise to compensate a Social Injustice with political favoritism. The Female Gender does not merit any Political Favoritism just because the Gender is Woman. The Naga does not feel any obligation to give political favor the women folks just because they are Females. Yes, in Studies, in their duties, girls are better and sincerer than Boys are. Girls look after their old Parents and others with more Care and Tenderness; they are par excellence in that, but it is not because they are brainier or have more compassion than man has. It is just that God has made them like that and Man thanks God for that. However, that does not merit any extra political kickback of 30% Reservation in the Urban Bodies Election to Woman. Man and Woman is Equal before God, before the Law and before modern Free Will Democracy. Woman Reservation in ULB Election is Unwise, Unjust Favoritism in Naga Polity; leave alone Article 371A of the Constitution of India. Political Favoritism has no place in modern Free Will Democracy. In Politics Man and Woman must have equal share of 100% each. Thepfulhouvi Solo. IFS (RR-68), Retd. Principal secretary Nagaland

A

s the battle for the 33% women reservation in the Municipal elections rages on, it would perhaps be good for all of us to ponder on the role of a woman in human society and nations as set forth in the Bible. 1. The word Eve (woman) literally means “Life giver”. There is only one man in the whole of human history that was not born of a woman- He was Adam. Adam was directly created by God himself and was not born of any woman. 2. After Adam, all of mankind (humankind) was born of Eve. Eve literally means “Mother of all living humankind.” (Gen 3:20) A woman is therefore the mother of all humanity and human history. Also, even humanity’s salvation came through the woman. “And I will put enmity between thee and the women, and between thy seed and her seed; he shall bruise they head and thou shall bruise his heal.” (Gen 3:15) 3. God did not create a society or a nation from the beginning. He could have done that but instead, he first created a family. He did this by first creating a man Adam which means “mankind.” Then from the man God created a woman. The man and woman were to become one flesh and from that union, a family was to begin the history of mankind and nations. The family therefore is the foundation of a society or a nation. In this Biblical fundamental truth, the woman in many ways has a more important role than the man in human societies and nations. This is because without the woman the man is incomplete. “And the Lord God said, it is not good that the man should be alone, I will make him a helper as his partner.” (Gen.2:18.) Thus, it is the woman who completes the man so that he can be the head of the family. In this mysterious design of God, the Bible says: “Neither was the man created for the woman but the woman for the man” (1 Cor. 11:9). Also, in as much as the man is the “image bearer and glory of God, so is the woman the glory of man” (1 Cor. 11:7). In this context, the Bible further says: “A good woman is a crown to her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.” (Prov. 12:4) As for the virtues of a good wife and mother, the Bible

Unity of the Nagas

Governments and fratricidal conflict took place. Among the different groups, the NSCN(I-M) was considered as the strongest Group and the GoI had agreed to have ceasefire agreement with NSCN(I-M), and ceasefire agreement was signed in 1997 and political talk was started which has been in process for a settlement up to now. To speak the truth, under God and by His grace the NSCN (I-M) has earned the status of the highest level talk which is

to be appreciated by the Nagas. The general public and the National workers cannot deny it. But the fact that the ongoing political talk being led by a Group does not satisfy the people, so much has been said about inclusiveness of all of the NPGs and the Naga people. If possible, it is the best for all, because it is a safety for the leading Group and for all of the people. Whatever settlement is made, all are responsible and no one will be blamed even if any

Reducing politics to a gamble or keeping it dignified

P

olitics in Nagaland is like an alcohol addiction. It gets even those who can’t walk straight on their own to run for public office. All one has to have is enough money to play the election game. In gambling, a participant thinks only about winning by beating other competitors by hook or by crook. In one of my Village Council meetings, someone recently said: “If you’re thinking about getting into the election, you must be willing to do anything in order to win, if not … you will cause a huge loss to our village people.” What he was implying, I guess, was this: If others use money to buy votes or deploy muscle power, we have to use more of them to beat the other candidates. Sadly, this has become the prevailing mindset of our Naga people. Having been fed with the money-for-vote mindset, many intending candidates are pressured into borrowing money or selling off their properties to contest in elections. Of course, they are betting against hope that they will recover their election campaign expenses once they get elected. They think that they have a right to be paid back, even if that meant having to steal public funds. Getting into politics, they assume, is the quickest way to make easy money. Their ideas of and motivation for politics are more in terms of gambling, not public service. In contrast, real politics is about public service. It’s about having concern for others and serving to

make lives better for all. When, for example, an elected official helps to provide good education for children, he is fulfilling his duty as a politician. And that’s not something to be construed as a gamble, because the future of our children depends on it. But when he drifts away from doing what he should do and begins to loot government funds meant for school children, he is putting the future of the children on the line or jeopardizing their lives. Therefore, real politics is not a game. it’s about dealing with real lives … and that’s a very serious matter. What about the recent discovery of the PDS rice scam in which the government is suspected of having a direct involvement? Can a government activity which has allegedly siphoned off supply goods meant for the poor be considered as fitting the definition of politics? Of course, not! The real name for this kind of activity is called criminal enterprise. And those who participate in that sort of illegal activity are really thieves or criminals, although they may still operate under the cover of some political offices. Such people don’t deserve to be called real politicians; at best, they are just political hacks! Understandably, most Nagas today suspect politicians of being ambitious, conniving, unprincipled, opportunistic, and corrupt. Since we are too familiar with these sorts of leaders, we have also wrongly come to demean an honorable and essential profession – that of the politician.

Since a politician’s primary job is public service, the task is very much a sacred profession and of a high calling which not just ‘anybody’ can fulfill. A person of political material must possess certain exceptional abilities, such as being skillful at mediating among political factions to reach agreements, negotiating issues with various pressure groups, and determining trade-offs in order to achieve something that seems reasonable. In a democratic society, he must not get too far ahead of the people either, because they must talk back and forth, shifting in response to changing group pressures. Politicians are essential for running the government, whose fragmented powers require them to make compromises among and within the various branches of government, to produce policy and action. And although he may be guided by principle, he acknowledges that there are people of principle on the other side, too. To sum it all up, politics isn’t a game. Don’t waste it by playing games. If you dirty the office with misdeeds for short-term gains, the dirt stays behind when you leave or people will have to continue living in the dirt if you stay on as you are. Serving in government is a public trust. It’s about improving people’s lives and building a better future for all. So, treat it with the respect it deserves. Mazie Nakhro

goes on to say: “The heart of the husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil” (Prov. 31:11). Proverbs 31:28 further says: “Her children rise up and call her blessed” Finally, Proverbs 14:1 says: “The wise woman builds her house but the foolish tears it down with her own hands.” Hence the role that a woman or a mother plays in the life of a society or nation is paramount and indispensable. 4. Besides being an indispensable person to her husband and children, the woman also has a role in providing for the family’s financial needs. Proverbs 31:16 says: “She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hand, she plants a vine yard.” In our modern world where our needs are greater than former times, a woman’s role in providing for her family’s needs is greater. Therefore women going for careers are a justified necessity. But whatever her achievement as a career woman may be, her greatest role in the family is her duty to her husband and to her children. This is because, the mental and spiritual health of a nation lies heavily on a mother’s bosoms and shoulders. That is the way God created the order of a family. In other words, a mother’s love for her children and her husband is the foundational pillar of a nation’s health and well being 5. In physical strength, a woman is weaker than a man. But in mental and spiritual strength, a woman is stronger than a man. (As proven by psychologist, even in torture, a woman can outlast a man in mental and physical breakdown). The fact is therefore: while God has made the man physically stronger, God has made the woman mentally and spiritually stronger because she is the one who must trivial in the birth pangs of bringing new born babies into the world so that the human race can go on Conclusion: Indeed the Bible is right when it says that the price of a virtuous woman is far above rubies (Prov 31:10). But the same Bible also says: “The wise woman builds her house but the foolish tears it down with her own hands.” Kaka D. Iralu

problem arises out of the settlement. In view of this, my suggestion to the NSCN (I-M) and other NPGs and all of the Naga public is that in spite of the existence of the different NPGs, the name of each organization is not used and only “ Naga” is used in the talk. It is to be no longer “ GoI and NSCN (I-M)” but “GoI and Nagas” led by Th Muivah. Even delegates from any other Groups such as NNC/ FGN, NSCN(R), NSCN (K) or NSCN ( Khehoi

camp) may not use the name of the organization but “ Naga delegate” only may be used. If this is accepted, the talk is for all and it belongs to all of the people and all of the Nagas have sense of belonging. Then the leaders or delegates are accepted as the leaders of the solid people. “ Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back” (Is.54:2). It is better to accept the better.” Rev.L.Suohie Mhasi, (rev. suohie_mhasi@yahoo.com)

Sir,

No electricity for 3 days at Padumpukhuri

During winter season 500 kva transformer has been damaged due to some technical problem or overloading. The consumers/public were informed from the concern department of power that there is not a single spare Transformer in the departmental store for replacement and the staff going around for 3 days visiting colonies to sort out for some alternative arrangements for replacement is a big embarrassment for the power department in Nagaland state. How can it be a place like Dimapur city one and only commercial hub of the state running short of spare transformer for an emergency purposes in the stock and let the consumers suffer for 3 to 4 days blackout without light. Whenever public put an enquiry the answer we get is shortage of funds/enable to purchase extra power source from the grid/less revenue collection from the consumers/shortage of working staff etc. Who’s outlook is all these for ultimately the responsible goes to state government/power minister/and the officials of power departments concern. Every now and then we talk about development but please improve the power supply, water supply, proper road connectivity first which is the source of life or life line and talk for further development. Let me press forward to the concern power department once again that upcoming sub-station plan at Padumpukhuri be taken up at the earliest to solve the hardship face by three colonies for long years from Purana Bazar/Padumpukhuri & Airport sector. I believe the power is working hard to venture out online payment/digital billing system and mostly the very challenging work is removing electric rusty posts especially in Dimapur replaced by underground cabling like other major cities in India to avoid all sources of effects in the near future. This season Shimla last got snow on December 25 and it was mild one. According to the Met office here, certain areas in Shimla like the Mall Road, the Ridge, the US Club and Jakhu hills and Manali got more than a foot of snow. While Shimla saw a low of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius, it was minus 0.8 degree in Manali. McLeodganj, the abode of the Dalai Lama in suburbs of Dharamsala town, was also covered with snow. Since the Commission can only grant permission to change the venue, Imchen, in this regard stated that the ROs could choose a convenient place and mention the venue in the official notification in their respective administrative office. He said the same request was granted for Mokokchung and Chumukedima on Friday. To queries whether nominations would allowed on Sunday, Imchen said official works would be held only during working days and not on holidays or Sundays. With regards to time for filing of nominations, Imchen said the procedure would be as usual (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), however, depending on the situation, RO may fix the time to start early or otherwise. When asked if more time would be extended in case candidates fail to file nominations on Monday in view of bandh at several places, Imchen categorically said that there was no way to continue extending the date of nominations indefinitely.

While expressing regret for the inconvenience, AYO has appealed to the general public not to take unnecessary risk. Meanwhile, all volunteers have been advised to wear traditional dress. For further information AYO said the following individuals could be contacted: Neinguvoto Krose (operations)- 9856309500, Peter Rutsa (operations)9856000177, Zhatuo Ratsa (catering)- 9436016529, Kenneth Mere (catering)- 9856901489 and Dievi Yano (medical)9856200353. Banks are in the process of setting them up at State levels.

Patna, Jan 7 (PTI): BJP today rebutted allegations that the PMO was behind the denial of a seat to RJD chief Lalu Prasad at the podium of the Prakash Parva and put the blame squarely on Nitish Kumar government, in an attempt to further fuel rumblings within the grand alliance on the touchy issue. “Chief Minister should specify whether he had sent names of Lalu Prasad and his minister sons for seat on the dais at the function...when the names were not sent, where comes the question of PMO deleting their names?” senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said in a statement. The strong riposte came in response to Congress state President and minister Ashok Choudhary blaming the Prime Minister’s Office for denial to seats to top leader of the largest constituent of grand alliance ministry in Bihar.

Shimla, Jan 7 (IANS): Popular tourist destinations Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie remained cut off throughout Saturday from the rest of Himachal Pradesh following continuous snowfall, officials said. Electricity supply was snapped here and Manali as power lines were damaged badly due to falling trees. But plentiful snowfall has cheered members of the hospitality industry in the hope that tourists will come in large numbers in the coming days. Traffic bound for Shimla could only reach Shogi, about 15 km from here, due to snowfall, an official told IANS. Likewise, heavy traffic on the National Highway-21 was blocked near Patlikuhl, 20 km before Manali. This was the season’s first significant snowfall that froze the “Queen of Hills” and resulted in the freezing of taps. Director General of Police Somesh Goyal said it was after decades that

the temperatures. Banjar in Kullu district recorded state’s highest rainfall of 73 mm. A government spokesperson said most of the internal roads in Shimla, Kullu, Chamba and Kinnaur districts were cut off due to snow. Even traffic bound for towns in Shimla district such as Narkanda, Jubbal, Kotkhai, Kharapathar and Chopal have been disrupted. The road link to towns in upper Shimla is likely to be restored by Sunday evening, the official said. The official advised tourists not to venture into remote areas as chances of heavy snow were high. The weather forecast said western disturbances -- storm systems originating from the Caspian Sea in the Central Asia and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region -- would remain active till Sunday with chances of heavy snow at isolated places. Thereafter the weather will remain largely dry in the state till January 13, Manmohan Singh, director of the meteorological office here, told IANS. He said the minimum temperature in the state would drop in the next two-three days. “It was sunny yesterday (on Friday) and we were never expecting sudden change in weather. Today we really enjoyed hurling snowballs at each other,” said Neha Gandhi, a tourist from Delhi who was in Shimla along with her parents. Tourism industry representatives are happy.

Singapore, Jan 7 (PTI): Indian economy will grow faster than China despite the temporary slowdown created by demonetisation, an Indian-origin academic and former Singapore diplomat said at a conference of leading world universities here today. “Even if the demonetisation created a slowdown, it is not going to change the long-term momentum of where India is going with its economic growth,” said Dean Kishore Mahbubani of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Concluding a three-day conference attended by educators from leading universities from across the world that make up the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, Mahbubani said demonetisation is good for Indian economy in the long-term. “I think demonetisation is a good thing for a lot of (black) money has come back into the economy. That, I think, is good for the economy,” he said. The Reserve Bank of India will need to borrow less after the cash returns to banks following demonetisation, he said. “India will grow faster than China even after this (demonetisation) slow down. The CSO pegged the country’s gross domestic product at 7.1 per cent in 2016-17 compared with 7.6 per cent in 2015-16. The anticipated growth of real GVA in 2016-17 is 7 per cent against 7.2 per cent in 2015-16, according to CSO estimates. “The growth in deposits is an outlier, hence November data was not used for the financials,” India’s Chief Statistician T. New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI): Gold prices recovered by Rs 30 to Rs 28,740 per 10 grams on scattered buying by local jewelers even as the metal weakened overseas. On similar lines, Silver rebounded by Rs 350 to Rs 40,450 per kg due to increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Bullion traders said that mild buying by local jewelers at domestic spot market helped the recovery in the precious metals’ prices, but a weak trend overseas capped the gains. Globally, gold fell 0.68 per cent to USD 1,172.20 an ounce and silver by 0.66 per cent to USD 16.44 an ounce in New York in yesterday’s trade. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity were higher by Rs 30 each to Rs 28,740 and Rs 28,590 per 10 grams, respectively. It had shed Rs 20 yesterday. Sovereign, however, remained unaltered at Rs 24,200 per piece of eight grams.

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS): The advance estimate of 7.1 per cent GDP released by Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), will have major errors as it does not include the data for the months after demonetisation, domestic rating agency Icra has said. The agency on Friday pegged the expected growth for 2016-17 lower at 6.8 per cent. “Given the impact of demonetisation on actual activity from mid-November 2016 onward, projecting GDP growth for the full year by extrapolating the trends up to October 2016 for several sectors, may introduce more errors than in earlier years. This would be particularly apt for cash intensive sectors such as construction,” Icra said in a statement. The advance estimates released by the CSO of growth in FY2017 are

is not a normal factor in the calculation of annual national income. Icra said: “Given the unfolding trends, we expect actual FY2017 growth to be lower than the advance estimates for sub-sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, electricity and construction.” In contrast, the recent uptick in commodity prices may well result in a somewhat improved GVA performance of the mining sector in H2 FY2017 as compared to the year-onyear decline in the first six months of FY2017, the agency added. “Moreover, the unavailability of corporate filings for third quarter of FY2017 and second advance estimates of rabi output (as opposed to the available data on sowing), are likely to constrain the accuracy of the advance estimates,” the statement said.

Taiwan President heads to US as Beijing watches

BA N G KO K , JA N 7 (AGENCIES): Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected with water levels reaching “roof-high” in some areas, Thailand’s interior ministry said. Transport services, including flights, have been disrupted and rescue efforts are under way to reach those stranded. The unseasonal downpour is expected to continue for at least two more days. The flash floods have also damaged hundreds of schools and toppled power cables across southern Thailand. Residents in villages across the region are using inflatables, such as rubber rings, to cross submerged roads. Meanwhile, the airport in Nakhon Si Thammarat province has been forced to close after the area received a record 162mm (6.4 in) of rain on Friday, officials said. An official for Thailand’s Meteorological Department told AFP news agency that the situation was “very bad”, adding that it was still “raining heavily” in the south. In response to the crisis, the Thai navy has stationed its largest ship in the South to act as a floating command centre, dispatching aid using helicopters and small boats. Last month, aerial footage showed flood damage to parts of southern Thailand with only rooftops visible above the flood waters. Supplies were being delivered to residents by boat.

Beijing has asked Washington to bar Tsai from flying through US airspace. “A transit is a transit,” the Taiwanese leader told reporters last week, when asked whether she would be meeting anyone from Trump’s administration.

FORT LAUDERDALE, JAN 7 (AGENCIES): An Iraq war veteran took a gun out of his checked luggage and opened fire in a crowded baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale’s airport on Friday, killing five people before being taken into custody, authorities said. Eight other people were wounded in the shooting rampage, which sent panicked travellers running for cover inside the terminal and onto the tarmac. The gunman was identified as Esteban Santiago, 26, who was carrying US military identification, according to a spokesman for US Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, citing officials at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). An aunt said he came back from his deployment “A different person,” MSNBC reported. In November, Santiago told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that his mind was being controlled and agents sent him to a mental hospital, said a federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Protest as SL launches Chinese industrial zone C O L O M B O, J A N 7 (AGENCIES): Sri Lanka police fired teargas to disperse hundreds of people protesting the launch Saturday of a special industrial zone in the island`s south that hopes to attract billions of dollars in Chinese investment. Protesters pelted government supporters with stones and police retaliated with teargas and water cannon at the launch, which was also attended by the prime minister and the Chinese ambassador, a police official told AFP. Authorities said about 25 people were hurt in the skirmishes, including 12 police. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and

ambassador Yi Xianliang said the zone in Hambantota, 240 kilometres (150 miles) south of Colombo, will generate thousands of jobs and bring in about $5 billion in Chinese investment. But residents are afraid they will lose their land to the project, which is situated adjacent to a lossmaking $1.4 billion harbour that Colombo hopes to turn into a joint venture with a Chinese company. The port has already proved controversial in itself with hundreds of temporary dock workers going on strike in December demanding that they be absorbed into the main por t-owning company

ahead of any sale to the Chinese. The government denies residents will lose any land to the new industrial zone, saying 95 percent of the area allocated for the project is state-owned and the remainder will be bought from private owners. They say there will be no forced acquisitions. “In the next two to five years, if everything is ok, there will be about $5 billion of (Chinese) investments in this zone,” ambassador Yi said at the launch, adding that 100,000 jobs could be created.

Santiago served from 2007 to 2016 in the Puerto Rico National Guard and Alaska National Guard including a deployment to Iraq from 2010 to 2011, according to the Pentagon. A private first class and combat engineer, he received half a dozen medals before being transferred to the inactive ready reserve in August last year. The shooter arrived on a flight to Fort Lauderdale with a checked gun in his

bag, and upon claiming the luggage went to the bathroom to load the gun, Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca said on Twitter. He came out firing, LaMarca said, and witnesses told MSNBC television he only stopped after running out of ammunition, at which point he surrendered to police. Cell phone video posted on social media showed travellers kneeling

and treating victims on the floor next to a carousel. At least two victims had pools of blood from apparent head wounds. The suspect was unharmed as law enforcement officers never fired a shot, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters at the airport, adding it was too early to assign a motive. “At this point, it looks like he acted alone,” Israel said while police continued to search the airport.

Clashes kill 9, including 2 civilians near Damascus BEIRUT, JAN 7 (AGENCIES): At least nine people, among them seven government soldiers, were killed in fighting near the Syrian capital of Damascus overnight, despite a fragile nationwide truce, a monitor said on Saturday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said fighting was continuing on Saturday in Wadi Barada, a rebel-held district northwest of Damascus that is home to the capital’s main water source. The Britain-based monitor said the overnight

fighting had killed at least seven Syrian soldiers and wounded around 20 others, some of whom were in serious condition. Two civilians were also killed in the violence, the group said. Water supplies from Wadi Barada have been cut since December 22. The regime and the rebels have traded accusations of responsibility, with the government saying the rebels deliberately targeted water infrastructure and the opposition saying army strikes hit pumping facili-

ties.

Fighting has continued in the area despite the start on December 30 of a nationwide truce brokered by regime ally Russia and opposition backer Turkey. The ceasefire, accepted by both the government and key rebel groups, has brought quiet to large parts of Syria, but the violence has continued in Wadi Barada. There have been discussions about the possibility of an agreement to end the fighting, with experts

able to enter the area to fix the damaged water infrastructure. But so far no deal has been reached, and the United Nations warned earlier this week that 5.5 million people were now affected by water shortages in the capital and its suburbs. More than 3,10,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began with anti-government protests in March 2011. Over half the country’s population has been displaced.

Thailand floods: 12 dead as record rainfall persists

Tsai Ing-wen

Tr ump himself appeared to have ruled out meeting Tsai this trip, saying it is “a little bit inappropriate” to meet anybody until he takes office January 20. Taiwan’s presidential office declined to provide details of Tsai’s itinerary during her US stays. “What China cares most about is whether Tsai and Trump will meet,” political analyst Liao Da-chi told AFP. “These are all warning signals to see how Taiwan will respond, as well as testing waters with the US,” added Liao, a professor at the National Sun Yatsen University. Tsai will visit Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador among the dwindling number of states that officially recognise Taiwan. She will attend the presidential inauguration in Nicaragua on Tuesday and meet with the heads of states of the other three nations.

TAIPEI, JAN 7 (AGENCIES): Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen left for the United States on Saturday on her way to Central America, a trip that will be closely watched by Beijing, incensed by her congratulatory call to Donald Trump. While the focus of the nine-day trip is to visit Taiwan’s ally nations in Central America, Beijingsceptic Tsai’s transit stops in Houston this weekend and San Francisco next weekend will be under scrutiny as cross-strait tensions rise. Tsai’s conversation with Trump in December after he won the presidency upended decades of diplomatic precedent in which Washington has effectively ignored Taipei in favour of Beijing, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province to be brought back within its fold. Since then, China has stepped up military drills near Taiwan, with speculation its sole aircraft carrier

he world is finally hearing from Kim Kardashian West a b o u t w h a t s h e we n t through when she was robbed in Paris. In a promo clip for the new season of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” the reality star tearfully recalls the night thieves held her at gunpoint. “They’re going to shoot me in the back,” Kardashian West tells her sisters. “There’s no way out. It makes me so upset to think about it.” The media mogul has stayed largely out of the spotlight since the October robbery. She recently returned to social media after a tumultuous few months that included husband Kanye West being hospitalized in November for exhaustion. “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” halted filming for a time after the robbery and Kardashian

West has not given any interviews about the incident. She had been in Paris for Fashion Week and E! cameras were not present at the time of the crime. But based on the clip released Friday, the trauma will feature prominently during the show’s next season. Kardashian West is also seen crying on the phone saying, “Don’t scare me, please. What’s going on?”

“I think he really needs me, and I have to get home,” she next says in the teaser, which appears to reference to West’s hospitalization. Kardashian West flew back from a planned appearance in New York at the time to be at her husband’s side in Los Angeles. The new season of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” debuts on E! in March.

astle on the Hill, released on Friday, has been described as a “love song for Suffolk”. In addition to describing the Framlingham area where he grew up, Sheeran sings “driving at 90 down those country lanes”. S g t C h r i s H a r r i s, from Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing, responded by tweeting “please slow down”. The new singles are the first to be released since he announced in December 2015 that he would be taking a break from music “to travel the world”. They are taken from his forthcoming album, which is called ÷ (Divide). While in his homage to growing up in Suffolk, Castle on the Hill, he says he “can’t wait to

go home”. Sgt Harris said: “Know you want to go home but please slow down on Suffolk roads.” And warned to “drive to arrive”. Sheeran is not the first singer to reference excessive speed in his lyrics. In Crosstown Traffic, Jimi Hendrix sang “ninety miles an hour, girl, is the speed I drive”. The BBC has approached Sheeran’s representatives for a comment.

ational award winning choreog rapher-director Remo D’Souza describes his journey in Bollywood as a roller coaster ride, saying that the tough journey keeps him grounded and empathetic towards others. Coming from Bengaluru, raised in a middle class family, Remo went through a long struggle before making it big in the Bollywood dance scene. “It (his journey) was a roller coaster ride and certainly not an easy one. But I am thankful to Almighty that in one lifetime I have seen both the extreme side, the good and the bad. So I take my success humbly and work hard to continue. My success is the result of my struggle,” Remo said. Remo has come out with his personal mobile app called RD’s World which will help many budding dancers and choreographers

to connect with him apart from his personal updates. Talking about his app, Remo said: “There are three interesting features – one is my merchandise that will be coming in two months, direct video audition that they (budding dancers) can send me and I will judge them and choreograph a new song. Every month I will be releasing a new song that budding choreographers can choreograph and send it to me. That is the chore job of a choreographer that we

all do.” Remo says he wants to give an easy and smooth path to Bollywood to budding dancers with his app. He said: “Back in days, there were no phone videos and I used to go after every director for an opportunity; there are days when I used to dance 10 to 12 times on the same music to different people just to get a chance. I know how it feels. Now that I have a platform, why not make their journey a little easy?” So what are you looking for? “When I know about the talent of a dancer, I also have to understand if our creative sensibility matches while working together. In a creative job, that is very important. According to that potential, I will take them in my team as assistant, actor, dancer,” said the National Award winning choreographer.

Black Sabbath’s Iommi writes choral Indian DJ to collaborate with Maroon 5 music for Birmingham Cathedral

B

lack Sabbath founder Tony Iommi has swapped his heavy metal roots for an ecclesiastical project by writing and producing a piece of choral music. The five-minute acoustic arrangement for Birmingham Cathedral was a huge departure for the musician once accused of being a Satanist. The 68-year-old said the song, How Good It Is, was to give something back to the city he hails from. He said the track was “just a little bit different to Sabbath”. The project was born out of his friendship with the Dean of Birmingham, the Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, which developed when he was battling cancer in 2012. The lyrics for the piece were inspired by Psalm 133 which talks about people living together in unity which “is what Birmingham is all about”, Dean Ogle said. “Tony K

and I were introduced by a mutual friend and we discussed possible music collaboration sometime in the future,” she said. “Then, when Tony was unwell, we got to know one another better when I began to pray for him and kept in touch with Tony and his wife about his health. “This is a most wonderful gift Tony offered to the cathedral.”

Iommi, whose band’s front-man is well-known hell-raiser Ozzy Osbourne, said the group, whose reputation is for being pioneers in heavy metal, have previously done instrumental work with orchestras which was something he enjoyed. “This is a completely new piece of music and I’m really pleased with it.” As for their famed links with the occult, Iom-

mi admitted in a BBC interview in 2013 that the group had “dabbled” in their younger days, but felt it was really an image invented by their record label when a picture of an upside down cross was used on their first album. “People used to think we were Satanists but we weren’t,” he said. “The songs were the opposite and all about the dangers of Black Magic and Satanism. “The closest we came was Black Magic chocolates.” The new song was played to the public in the cathedral on Thursday which garnered a “beautiful” reaction, Dean Ogle said. “We’re so pleased with what people have been saying. “We’re particularly touched by Tony’s fans who have got in touch to say how much they like it some are quite surprised but ‘beautiful’ is a word that keeps coming up. “Who knows if there will be more collaborations?”

Cristiano Ronaldo executes his trademark celebration with Marcelo after scoring Real Madrid’s third goal of the game.

Casemiro added a fifth in the 58th minute as Real cruised to all three points to move six points ahead of rivals Barcelona, who travel to Villarreal on Sunday evening. T h e h e av y d e f e a t means Granada stay rooted in the relegation zone in 19th position with nine points. The afternoon started in celebratory mood with Ronaldo joined by Ballon D’Or winners Raymond Kopa, Michael Owen, Luis Figo, Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane on the pitch as he was presented with the award for the fourth time. The party m o o d c o n t i nu e d i n t o the game and Real were ahead in the 12th minute

when Sergi Samper lost possession in the middle of the park to Casemiro, who picked out Benzema. T h e Fr e n c h m a n t h e n released Isco, who showed composure to slide the ball under the onrushing Ochoa. Real doubled their advantage eight minutes later when Marcelo’s cut back picked out Luka Modric on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder’s shot was saved by Ochoa but parried only as far as Benzema, who tapped home from close range. The hosts were rampant as Marcelo produced a superb piece of skill to beat Tito before firing in an inch-perfect

E Bengal, Aizawl draw in I-League opener

Ko l k ata , Ja n 7 (Agencies): Gurwinder Singh’s own goal at the fag end of the first half was cancelled out by a late header by substitute Ivan Bukenya to earn a precious point for East Bengal in their opening I-League bout against Aizawl FC. The first shot of the game came in the 15th minute when Anselme’s effort went straight into the hands of Albino Gomes. The visitors were held inside their own half as the Red and Gold brigade saw most of the ball. Three minutes before the half hour mark, Poojary ran down the left to beat Lalruatthara and his cross took a deflection off Kingsley Eze and fell right onto Wedson’s path but the Haitian’s shot was blocked

by Lalrinzuala Khiangte inside the six yard box. It was an anti-climatic end to the first half as Gurwinder Singh scored a comic own-goal. Jayesh Rane found Stephane Bayi inside the box with the Ivorian being surrounded by three defenders. Gurwinder ended up smashing the ball inside his own net as he looked to clear the danger, much to the disappointment of the assembled fans. Morgan was compelled to change personnel in order to pressurize the Aizawl defense. Willis Plaza was brought in to replace Jackichand Singh. Aizawl could have made it 2-0 but Jaryan’s header from a corner ricocheted off the crossbar. The Kolkata side were wasteful upfront with

Plaza struggling to adapt and put away the chances that came his way. Albert came close to doubling his team’s lead when he made a run down the right and his shot took deflection off Bukenya which allowed Rehenesh to make a save. Albino Gomes pulled off a top save to deny Plaza from close range. However, Morgan’s team scored the crucial equaliser in the 90th minute. Ruidas’ corner is headed by Borges on the path of Bukenya who does well to guide it in with Albino wrong footed. East Bengal surely need to improve if they hope to win the elusive title this season while Aizawl will wonder on ‘what could have been’ had they converted their chances.

cross for Ronaldo, who made no mistake with his header. Four minutes later and it was four and it was Isco who grabbed his second of the afternoon, tapping home Modric’s cross in the 31st minute. With the game already one, Zidane took the opportunity to shuffle his pack with Toni Kroos replaced at half-time by James Rodriguez. Isco, who picked up a knock at the end of the firsthalf after being tripped by Samper, was also replaced minutes into the secondhalf by Marcos Asensio. The changes did not disr upt Real’s rhythm though and Casimero was the unlikely scorer, getting on the end of James’ freekick to score his first goal of the season from close range. Changes from both sides followed as Zidane took the opportunity to rest Marcelo, replacing him with Fabio Coentrao with just over 20 minutes remaining. With the game done and dusted as a contest Real were going through the motions, but they still had opportunities to add to their goals tally as James Rodriguez fired a free-kick wide in the 72nd minute. Ronaldo pushed until the end to add to the scoreline and he almost added his second on the afternoon in the 86th minute but Ochoa smartly saved the Portugal international’s powerful drive.

K ARAC H I , J a n 7 (Agencies): Former Pakistan cricket heavyweights on Saturday asked Misbah-ul-Haq to call time on his illustrious career, blaming his poor batting and uninspired captaincy for a 3-0 whitewash to Australia. Misbah, who at 42 is the oldest current international cricketer, capped a miserable series with a 220-run defeat in the final Test in Sydney on Saturday. It was Pakistan’s four th consecutive 3-0 whitewash in Australia since 1999, and their twelfth straight defeat. Raja, a former CEO of PCB, added that Misbah’s captaincy had taken a sharp turn for the worse in the series, with bizarre field placements and a failure to inspire his charges. “I think Misbah was let down by his bowling and his field placings were not accurate either,” he said. Au c k l a n d, Ja n 7 (Agencies): American Lauren Davis won her first WTA title by defeating Croatian teenager Ana Konjuh 6-3 6-1 in the Auckland Classic final on Saturday. The early exits of Serena and Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki meant the tournament had lost much of its fizz and the final was left to two players ranked 47th and 61st in the world. The 23-year-old Davis, who lost two finals in 2016, dominated her erratic 19-year-old opponent from the outset with her consistency and powerful serve. Konjuh was plagued by errors and struggled with her serve throughout the match. She was broken twice in the first set and three times in the second.

Rooney equals Charlton’s scoring record Royal Strikers lift 21st WCC trophy United should have secured the win as Rashford burst onto a through ball and skipped past Al-Habsi, only to put the shot into the side netting with the goal at his mercy. Reading had a brief spell of possession in United territory without really threatening and they were made to pay when Rashford added the home side’s third with 15 minutes remaining, finishing coolly after being played in by a superb, incisive pass from Michael Carrick.

He had his second soon afterwards following a moment that Al-Habsi will want to forget. The ball flicked off the goalkeeper’s right toe as he attempted to clear the ball left-footed, allowing Rashford to steal in and finish from a yard out. United pressed for a fifth in the closing stages but had to settle for four and a place in the next round, while Reading are left to focus solely on their Championship promotion push.

Superb Man City humiliate Hammers

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney in action during FA Cup match against Reading.

Lo n d o n, Ja n 7 (Agencies): Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s club goalscoring record as Manchester United eased into the FA Cup fourth round with a 4-0 win over Reading. Jose Mourinho’s side were in control from the off and had already gone close twice before Rooney gave them the lead in the seventh minute to equal the club record set by Charlton. Anthony Martial doubled the advantage with a composed finish after 15 minutes as Jaap Stam’s Reading struggled to deal with United’s pace and movement. Despite numerous chances for the hosts, it

stayed at 2-0 until a double from Marcus Rashford inside the last 15 minutes - the youngster’s first goals since September. It was a flying start from United and they could have gone in front twice in the opening two minutes; Rashford flashing a shot wide from the edge of the box before Ali Al-Habsi got down well to keep out Rooney’s left-footed effort. The goal came soon enough, though, as Martial jinked in from the left and teed up Mata, whose clipped cross was diverted into the far corner by the outstretched leg of Rooney. It was an instinctive finish and one that took

him to a record 249 goals for the club, level with the on looking Charlton. With Reading stunned, United took full advantage and the second goal arrived after quarter of an hour, Martial playing a neat one-two with Rooney before surging into the area and stroking the ball into the goalkeeper’s left-hand corner. The visitors slowly worked their way into the game and almost halved the deficit when a well-worked corner resulted in Joey van den Berg volleying an effort across the face of goal with Liam Moore millimetres away from getting a touch that would have sent it in. MDCA T20: Zero Boys A, Brotherhood win

Dimapur, Jan 7 (NPN): Zero Boys A b e a t Jov i a l C C w h i l e Brotherhood CC thrashed Gorkha Student Union at the ongoing Mokokchung District Cricket Association (MDCA) Inter-Club T20 Cricket tournament on Saturday. In the first match, Bendangtemsu stroked 29 runs to help Zero Boys A to a tight chase of 119 against Jovial to guide his team home with six balls to spare even as wickets fell around him at regular intervals in the middle overs. Zero Boys A elected to field after winning the toss and reduced Jovial to 118/8. Bendangtemsu took 3 wickets and Tekatemsu claimed 2. Temjentoshi and Meyameren steadied the proceedings with 33 runs

and 26 runs respectively. Set 119 to win, Zero Boys A started decently but some quick wickets in the middle made the match exciting. But Bendangtemsu stood firm and scored 29 runs to help his team take the match. Mayangteka c o n t r i b u t e d 2 7 r u n s, featuring two fours and a six, to impart useful impetus to the closing stages of the chase. Moalemba 2/21 was the pick of the bowler for Jovial while Odiyanger and Jangzapong took 1 wicket each. In the second match of the day, Brotherhood CC won the match against Gorkha Student Union with seven wickets and 33 deliveries to spare. Daniel Rai played a match winning innings of unbeaten 30 runs. But it was Aosashi

who set up the chase with a quick fire 23 runs. Buddha Rai (2 wickets) and Bir Bahadur (1 wicket) were the only bowler to test the Brotherhood batsmen. Earlier batting first, Gorkha Student Union got off to a brilliant start with the openers putting on 78 runs in the first 10 overs. But after the fall of Sunil Gurung, who scored 21 runs, GSU batsmen felt apart. Only Nihal Rai was fighting the lone battle with a fine inning of 61 runs to steer his team to a total of 110 for 6 in 20 overs. For Brotherhood, Temsutoshi and Longkhum ended with 2/19 and 2/27 respectively. Monday’s matches 8 AM: Titans CC VS Sovran CC 11:30 AM: Rainbow CC vs Jovial CC

Manchester City crushed West Ham United 5-0 to cruise into fourth round of FA Cup on Friday. After taking the lead through Yaya Toure from the penalty spot, the five-time winners swept their opponents away with devilish attacking verve, inflicting on the beleaguered Hammers their worst ever home defeat in the competition. They survived a solitary scare when the hosts’ Sofiane Feghouli inexplicably shot wide from in front of an open goal, but went in at the break with a 3-0 advantage after an own goal from Havard Nordtveit and an effort from David Silva. Sergio Aguero then flicked the ball home early in the second half to become the third highest scorer in City’s history and defender John Stones netted his first for the club with a header from a corner with seven minutes remaining. If City’s inconsistent form had started to weigh heavy on manager Guardiola, who was in the tetchiest of moods following their Premier League victory over Burnley on Monday, the Spaniard’s spirits would have been lifted by their display in the capital. There were flashes of his former Barcelona side in some of City’s attacking play and the ease with which they dismantled a poor West Ham, who looked off the pace from the start and were thoroughly outclassed throughout a nightmare 90 minutes.

Australia crush Pakistan to sweep series

The Australian team with their trophy after defeating Pakistan in their test match.

SYDNEY, J a n 7 (Agencies): Australia clinched a series clean sweep with an emphatic 220-run win over Pakistan in the third Test in Sydney on Saturday. The tourists were all out shortly before tea on the final day for 244 chasing 465 runs with paceman Josh Hazlewood and spinner Steve O’Keefe both snaring three wickets. Pakistan’s hopes of holding out for a draw evaporated with the dismissals of leading series runscorer Azhar Ali and veteran Younis Khan before lunch. Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed topscored with a fighting unbeaten 72 off 70

balls. Australia completed a series clean sweep after a 39-run win at the Gabba and an innings and 18-run victory in Melbourne. It was Pakistan’s 12th straight defeat since their last Test win in Australia in Sydney 22 years ago. David War ner was named man of the match for his scintillating hundred before lunch on the opening day, while skipper Steve Smith was announced as the official player of the series. The tourists lost four wickets in the first session after resuming at 55 for one. The highest target successfully chased down

in the fourth innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground was Australia’s 288 for two against South Africa in 2006. Azhar Ali lasted just six balls into the final day before he was out in a soft dismissal on his overnight score of 11. He tried to work Josh Hazlewood to the leg-side only to bunt the ball back to the bowler for an easy return catch. Azhar finished as the highest Pakistan run scorer in a series in Australia with 406 at 81.20. Babar Azam followed in Hazlewood’s next over, trapped leg before wicket for nine to end a disappointing series with a

total of just 68 runs from six innings. Younis Khan missed out on becoming the first Pakistan batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs when he was caught in the deep off spinner Nathan Lyon for 13. Nightwatchman Yasir Shah’s 93-ball defiance ended a half-hour before lunch when he was snapped up the slips by fielding substitute Jackson Bird off left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe for 13. Asad Shafiq went soon after lunch bowled by Mitchell Starc off a thick inside edge for 30. Skipper Misbah-ulHaq resisted for 98 balls before he went after O’Keefe and skied to the safe hands of Lyon at mid-off for 38 - his highest score of a struggling series. Misbah, at 42 playing his probable last innings in Australia, was given a generous ovation as he left the SCG. Wahab Riaz cracked three fours off nine balls before he lost a review for caught behind off O’Keefe for 12, and O’Keefe ran out Mohammad Amir for five to put Australia on the brink of victory. Hazlewood claimed the last wicket and his third of the innings when he had Imran Khan caught in the slips for a duck.

Pliskova routs Cornet for Brisbane title Brisbane, Jan 7 (Agencies): Third seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova has claimed her maiden Brisbane Inter national women’s title. The world No.6 routed unseeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-0 6-3 in just over an hour at Pat Rafter Arena on Saturday night. Pliskova became the second Czech - and first since Petra Kvitova in 2011 to lift the Evonne Goolagong Cawley Cup as women’s champion. Cornet had no answer for Pliskova’s firepower from the outset - the first set lasted just 18 minutes. In the end, Pliskova hit 30 winners to Cornet’s 10 and sent down seven aces to her opponent’s one to clinch her seventh career title. The 24-year-old Pliskova has picked up where she left off in 2016. Last year she had a breakout season, making her maiden grand slam final at the US Open and featuring in the Czech Republic’s third straight Fed Cup triumph. She will return to a career high world No.5 ahead of the Australian Open thanks to the Brisbane win, which also earned her a AU$262,396 cheque. Pliskova only dropped

one set in the entire tournament, in her quarterfinal win over eighth seed Roberta Vinci of Italy. She levelled her headto-head record against world No.41 Cornet at 1-1. Cornet, 26, was the lowest ranked female finalist in Brisbane’s history. T h e f o r m e r wo r l d No.11 cr uised into the tournament decider after French Open champion Garbine Muguruza pulled out of their semi-final with a thigh complaint.

Sania, Bethanie win doubles title

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza picked up her first title of the season, combining with American Bethanie Mattek-Sands to lift the Brisbane Inter national women’s doubles title, but ended up losing the World No.1 crown to her partner. The top-seeded IndoAmerican duo triumphed 6-2, 6-3 against the secondseeded Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final here. The trophy, however, ended Sania’s 91-week reign as the world No.1 doubles player in the WTA rankings. That position was taken over by Bethanie.

Karolina Pliskova plants a kiss on the trophy after winning the Brisbane International tennis tournament.

“I feel like I’m handing over Miss World No.1 crown,” Sania said in her post-match speech. The Indian had come into the tournament as a defending champion, having won it with Swiss ace martina Hingis last year. “We always have good matches (against Vesnina/ Makarova). It’s great to come back as defending champion. Tha nk you to my partner and best friend. We go a long way, we play

once a year, the last time we played, we won in Sydney,” Sania said. “I think we should play a lot more. Thanks for playing with me. I was No.1 in the world but congratulations to her for becoming No.1 now. If not me, than her, she has had an amazing year,” she added. Sania will go back to pairing with Czech Republic’s Barbora Strycova in Sydney next week and the Australian Open, which starts on January 16.
