Modi, Shah offer UP CM’s post to Rajnath ALLAHABAD, JUN 11 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah had offered to make Home Minister Rajnath Singh the chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh, informed sources said on Saturday. Modi and Shah made the formal offer during the last budget session of Parliament, the sources said. Sources also said that BJP was desperate to win the UP polls, and that there was no other face with the stature like Rajnath. Rajnath Singh, who does not seem to be very attracted by the offer, has not officially communicated his response to the party leadership. “The reports about Rajnath Singh being projected as chief ministerial candidate are not true. In fact, no decision in this regard has been taken yet,” a BJP leader close to RSS told IANS on the conditions of anonymity. The BJP leader, who is also an office bearer in the Uttar Pradesh unit, however, added: “But it is true that Rajnath Singh was offered the party’s chief ministerial candidature a month ago.” The BJP leadership feels that Rajnath, who was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh between 2000 and 2002, is still the only reliable face of the party in the state and can give a contest to both BSP chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Protect rights of domestic workers: Peseyie

Peseyie along with the participants of the ‘North East Domestic Workers’ Week’ . (NP) Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 11 (NPN): Nagaland minister of social welfare and parliamentary affairs, Kiyanilie Peseyie, on Saturday asserted that the basic rights of domestic workers should be upheld and protected. Addressing the North East Domestic Workers’ Week (June 10-16, 2016) Regional Conference as chief guest at St. Joseph’s college Bishop Abraham memorial Indoor stadium, Jakhama, the minister called for creating a just society for all domestic workers, where they were treated with dignity and justice, their rights upheld, contributions recognized and their voices heard. He also stressed the need to abolish child domestic work and allow children to enjoy mainstream education and fuller childhood. Kiyanilie further appealed to all responsible to

commit themselves to promoting and ensuring participation of domestic workers in struggle of injustice and discrimination. Stating that most domestic workers were from the marginalized sections of society and most of them were migrants, part time to full time, skilled and unskilled workers, the minister said they were however not protected under the scope of labour laws in India. The minister disclosed that social and welfare department under the Ministry of Women and Child Development and Social Justice and Empowerment provided many schemes such as life and disability cover, child welfare schemes, health and maternity benefits, old age protection, old age homes etc as a social security under welfare boards. In her speech, the director social science department, ADBU Guwahati, Dr. Riju Sharma, said that hosting such

event provided a platform to generate critical thinking on strategies and methodologies to improve the conditions of domestic workers. She said it also help extend networks and communication between all key stakeholders for upholding the rights and dignity of this huge workforce, which was highly invisible, unnoticed, unrecognized and uncared for. Dr. Sharma said there was serious need to deliberate on the link between domestic workers and the deficiency of quality, accessible and affordable care services, which, she said, was also linked to the context of ageing societies and changing family structure necessitating more care services. She said various challenges needed to turn into opportunities and not just to express the pain, but to empower the workers and provide them their entitlements and respect which they deserved. ACAUT Wokha unit reaffirms BJP, Cong fight for RS seats marred by cross voting ‘one govt one taxation’ resolution DIMAPUR, JUN 11 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland, Wokha Unit, which held a coordination meeting with all the GBs, VDB members and frontal organizations of Wokha district at Lotha Tribal Council Hall, Wokha town on Saturday, has adopted a seven-point resolution, in which the house reaffirmed the October 31, 2013 “Naga public rally resolution” of “one government one taxation”. In a press release, ACAUT Wokha unit, media cell, stated that the resolutions were adopted after discussing several issues including “various demands & summons made by Naga underground factions, dedication, truth and honesty of every leader irrespective of village/jobs while in the service of the people etc”. After thorough deliberation, the house resolved that no public/ village leader would be allowed to be summoned anywhere anytime by any NPG/individual without the knowledge of the ACAUT. It was resolved that if any problem/hassle was created by any person/underground the matter would be dealt seriously with the

person concerned at the personal/ individual level. The house also resolved that if any HoD or any VDB secretary was found to be paying money to any NPG, the individual concerned would be held fully responsible and an FIR would be immediately filed etc. They further resolved that if any village/leader/ACAUT leader was summoned or arrested, the whole Lotha community would “move in solidarity to be with the village or person.” The house noted that some VDB secretaries were paying taxes to the NPGs “against the wishes of the Naga people.” In this regard, ACAUT Wokha unit endorsed the matter to the Wokha district VDB Association to verify and submit the result to the ACAUT Wokha unit within seven days from the date of this publication. “If we are to live we shall live together and if we die we shall die together,” the house resolved. Meanwhile, ACAUT Wokha unit has expressed appreciation to the district administration and the SP Wokha for providing security during the meeting.

New Delhi, Jun 11 (AGENCIES): The BJP made significant gains in the Rajya Sabha by winning 12 seats on Saturday, thus marginally narrowing the gap with the opposition Congress in the upper house where the ruling party is in a minority. At the end of the voting for 27 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Haryana and Karnataka, the Congress won six, the Samajwadi Party seven and the Bahujan Samaj Party two. A total of 58 Rajya Sabha seats from 16 states were vacant for the last two months. Thirty candidates were elected unopposed last month. The BJP made a clean sweep in Rajasthan where all its four candidates, including Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and senior leader Om Prakash Mathur, were elected. Harshvardhan Singh and Ramkumar Verma were the other two BJP winners. The BJP clinched both seats - union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Mahesh Podaar - in Jharkhand amid allegations of crossvoting that helped it to defeat a supposedly united opposition in the

state. “The BJP is murdering democracy. Money power played a key role in the Rajya Sabha poll,” JVM-P President Babulal Marandi said, after the polls triggered controvery. In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP won two seats and the Congress one. The BJP winners were former journalist M.J. Akbar and Anil Madhav Dave. The Congress candidate was Vivek Tankha. Union minister Birender Singh won comfortably in Haryana. But the surprise victory in the state was BJP-backed media baron Subhash Chandra. Thirteen votes of Congress legislators were rejected, handing over the victory to Chandra. He defeated Delhi-based lawyer and Congress and INLD-supported candidate R.K. Anand. In Karnataka, Union Minister for Industries and Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman won for the BJP while the ruling Congress got three seats. The Congress winners were its stalwarts Oscar Fernandes, Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Ramamurthy. In Uttar Pradesh, all seven candidates of the ruling Samajwadi Party won easily. The winners included two Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates while one seat each went to the BJP and the Congress.

In Uttarakhand, Congress candidate Pradeep Tamta was declared elected for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the hill state despite strong differences of opinion within the party over his candidature.

Cross voting

Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh Saturday saw cross-voting by a BJP MLA while another party legislator claimed that she was prevented from voting. BJP MLA Vijay Bahadur Yadav cross voted in favor of a Samajwadi Party candidate. “I voted on the basis of development done by the Chief Minister and I am ready to make any sacrifice,” he said. BJP MLA from Khaga Fatehpur constituency, Krishna Paswan alleged she was prevented from voting while MLA Sangeet Som alleged that there was misbehavior with his party legislators. BJP-backed Independent candidate for Rajya Sabha seat in Uttarakhand, Geeta Thakur, who retired from the contest on eve of the polls has resigned from the party accusing it of suffering from an “anti-Dalit mindset”. The BJP got another setback with its Bhimtal MLA Dan Singh Bhandari tendering his resignation

from the membership of the state Assembly to Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal last night. In Bengaluru, eight ‘rebel’ lawmakers of the JD-S face suspension from the regional party for ‘crossvoting’ in the biennial election to the four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka on Saturday, a party spokesman said. “Eight of our MLAs (lawmakers) face suspension for defying the party’s whip and cross voting in favour of Congress candidate (K.C. Ramamurthy) instead of voting for our official nominee B.M. Farook, who lost the contest,” JD-S spokesman Ramesh Babu said. As the Rajya Sabha polls are held with an open ballot system, every voter has to show the ballot paper to the respective party’s official agent before casting the vote. The major jolt for Congress came in Haryana where the party suffered through heavy cross-voting by its 14 MLAs that led to the defeat of the party-backed Independent candidate R K Anand who was mainly fielded by its arch rival INLD. Subhash Chandra, a media baron, defeated Anand, a senior lawyer and a former MP, after 14 votes of Congress were rejected.

India begins work on bridge linking NE to Chittagong Cap on ticket cancellation NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (AGNCIES): India started work on building a bridge over the Feni river in Tripura to ferry heavy machines and goods to and from the Northeastern states and the rest of India via Bangladesh through the Chittagong international port, top official said here on Saturday. The Bangladesh government has earlier agreed to allow India to use the Chittagong port, about 72 km from Tripura’s southern border town of Sabroom. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina jointly laid the foundation stone of the bridge during the former’s two-day visit to Dhaka on June 6—7, 2015. “India has completed preliminary work including making detailed project report to build the bridge in Tripura to access Chittagong port to carry goods and heavy machineries for the northeast region,” Tripura’s Public Works Department (PWD) National Highway wing Chief Engineer Dipak Ranjan Das told reporters. “The DPR after

some modification would be resubmitted to the Road Transport and Highways Ministry (MoRTH) next week for release of funds,” Das said. The official said New Delhi would build the double-lane bridge and approach roads both in Bangladesh and India at its own cost and gave responsibility to Tripura PWD to construct the bridge and related approach roads. Das said that after the finalisation of the tender, two and a half years time would be required to build the 150metre-long bridge and other necessary facilities. “A joint team of senior officials of India and Bangladesh recently visited Sabroom [in India] and Ramgarh [in Bangladesh] to initiate construction work and finalise other ground works,” Tripura PWD Minister Badal Choudhury told IANS. “The proposed bridge, to be built at a cost of Rs 94 crore, would be the trading lifeline not only for northeast India but also neighbouring South Asian countries,” Choudhury said.

Referring Bangladesh Industry Minister Alhaz Amir Hossain Amu’s declaration last week here, Tripura Minister said: “Both Bangladesh and India are very keen to intensify trade and business with the northeast region and also set up joint venture projects for the benefit of the two neighbours.” During Mr. Modi’s visit last year, both the countries had signed an agreement promising that Bangladesh would allow use of Chittagong sea port and Mongla river port for the movement of goods to and from India. A Tripura Industry and Commerce Department official said various other tourism-related amenities and infrastructure would also be constructed in and around the bridge area, 135 km south of Tripura capital Agartala. The Northeast Frontier Railway has started laying broad gauge tracks to extend its network up to border town Sabroom and extension of railway line linking Bangladesh’s Akhaurah railway station, just

five kilometres from Agartala railway station. The National Highway—8, which connects Tripura with rest of India, has been extended up to Sabroom border town. The northeastern states are surrounded by Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan as well as China and the only land route access to these states from within India is through Assam. But this route passes through hilly terrain with steep roads and multiple hairpin bends. Chaudhur y said: “If Dhaka provides transit facilities to India and if we can use the Chittagong international port and other ports in Bangladesh, commodities and machinery can be transported to the northeast from various parts of India and abroad, saving huge time and money.” “The transit between northeast India and rest of the country and abroad via Bangladesh is likely to become a reality in near future,” he said. On an average, the distance between important cities of Bangladesh and northeast India is 30 km to 100 km. Agartala via

Guwahati is 1,650 km from Kolkata by road and 2,637 km from New Delhi, while the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is just about 500 to 600 km, depending upon the mode of transportation. The Food Corporation of India had last year ferried 35,000 tonnes of rice in different phases to Tripura from Visakhapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata port via Bangladesh using the Ashuganj river ports and Bangladesh highways. Ashuganj river port is just 40 km from Agartala. In 2012, Bangladesh had allowed the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to ferry heavy machinery, turbines and over—dimensional cargoes through Ashuganj port for the 726—MW Palatana mega power project in southern Tripura. Sceptics were apprehensive about the development, saying when the government was talking about completely sealing the border to check influx of illegal immigrants, on the other hand they were building bridges.

charge, less baggage fee

N EW D EL H I , J U N 11(AGENCIES): Fliers will soon have a reason to smile as the government on Saturday proposed a cap on ticket cancellation charges, increased compensation for being denied boarding and introduced a steep cut in excess baggage fees levied by airlines. “The measures are being proposed as there have been complaints from passengers that issues are not getting resolved within a reasonable time,” said civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, at a press conference here. Suggesting a slew of passenger-centric measures, the civil aviation ministry said airlines will have to refund all statutory taxes in case of flight cancellations. In case of flight cancellations announced within 24 hours of departure, the compensation amount has been enhanced to up to Rs 10,000. In addition, refunds will also be applicable on all fares, including promotional and spe-

cial rates. “It shall also be the prerogative of the passenger to decide whether to get a cash refund or hold the amount in credit.” Minister Raju also said airlines must ensure that refunds on cancelled tickets were made within 15 days, even if the bookings were made through agents or online portals. Av i a t i o n r e g u l a t o r DGCA has proposed that “under no circumstances the cancellation charges be more than the basic fare” and carriers cannot levy additional charge to process the refund. In case of checked-in baggage, the airlines will charge Rs 100 per kilogram for baggage weight in excess of 15 kg, and up to 20 kg. Currently, Rs 300 is levied on every kilogram of baggage beyond the 15-kg limit. With regard to denied boarding, mainly due to overbooking, the government has proposed compensation of up to Rs 20,000 subject to certain conditions. K Y M C

DIMAPUR, JUNE 12 (NPN): District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) in collaboration with Nagaland Alliance for Children and Women Rights (NACWR) observed the World Day Against Child Labour under the theme “End Child Labour in Supply Chains”, here at Elim Hall, Duncan Bosti, Saturday. Speaking as panel session speaker, GB federation general secretary-Shikuto Zalipu in his remark said that historically, Naga society had no account of child labour or women exploitation instead child and women were kept as priced possession. Even kids working in the field were not taken as labourers but as extra help since Nagaland is basically an agriculture based economy. Adding that although

Nagaland had progressed into an urbanized state, two-third of its still lived in rural areas and those were the section that was in danger of being victimised. He said, parents living in rural places send their children to urban areas in hopes of better education but unfortunately those children fall into unhealthy situations which in turn and add to child labour. He said all these factors contribute to the urgent need for a collective effort to remove child labour. Also speaking as a panel speaker, Oriental Theological Seminary principal Dr. Wati Aier disclosed that multinational companies on the lookout for cheap labours in developing countries are to be blamed for the rise of child labourers as the competitions among various companies are leading to exploitations in poor

countries. Highlight on the amendments made on the Child Labour Act on April 15, 2015, Dr Aier said, the amendments made are questionable as they allow children to work on ‘certain places’ which are not ‘hazardous’ after the school hours when there is no proper way of defining the term ‘hazardous’. He added that some of the major factors leading to child labour are poverty, limited education and the faulty system. Dr Aier opined that if churches of the state adapt a pilot project and focus on marginalized children, there could be change. He added that since theologically the Christian principle was based solely on saving souls and attaining salvation the marginalized people were equally precious

souls as anyone else. Also speaking during the event, Naga Women Hoho, Dimapur president Hukheli Wotsa, said the special occasion was observed in order to defend children from engaging on certain circumstances which are totally necessary for their survival and educational need. Nevertheless, she added, child labour was prevalent in the state and the educational system followed in the state was also partly to be blamed for such cases of child labour. She express believe in the need to indulge children to help out in household chores to as to cultivate a sense of work culture. Dwelling on the factors leading to the emergence of child labour particularly in Nagaland, The Morung Express editor Akum Longchari, said unless people do not understand the need to come out of the safety and security of their homes, the demand for child labour could not be controlled. Adding that there was a need to understand the variety of circumstances from the beginning to the end, Longchari said

the actions taken to protect children should be interconnected to the root causes that were responsible for child labour in the first place. Suggesting measures that can be taken up in the fight against child labour, Longchari said one of the most important step would be to get more children into schools as that would be the best defence against child labour. And that pre-schooling was very vital in this case for the development of children and starting schools from the age of 6 years makes children miss the most important phase of learning. He said, according to Global Slavery Index of 2016, an estimated 18.3 million Indians live in conditions listed as ‘modern slavery’ with an increase of 4.1 million since 2014. Also speaking during the programme, a representative for Childline India Foundation, said that when the foundation was launched in Nagaland in 2011 with a target which they thought was too big for a place like Dimapur which is majority Christian

and inhabited by Nagas. But when the foundation started working they surpassed the target they had set and till 2016 the foundation had rescued more than 700 children of which 70% are domestic child labour. She highlighted that Nagas deny the context of child labour and people often responded that those who work as domestic helps were treated as their own children. But she said, this in reality was entirely different and those children were gravely discriminated. She narrated a few instances the foundation came across while on their mission of rescuing. It may be mentioned here that according to Global Slavery Index 2016, India has the fourth-highest proportion of people living under enslaved conditions and is equivalent to the population of Netherlands. On an average, 51 out of every 100 people are vulnerable to modern slavery – bonded labour, forced begging, forced marriage, domestic services and commercial sex work – in India, according

to the Global Slavery Index 2016 compiled by the Walk Free Foundation, an advocacy based in Australia. Earlier the programme was felicitated by NACWR president Asha Sanchu while opening prayer was made by DABA pastor. Welcome note was given by Dimapur DCPO-Pikato E Tuccu. Concluding remark was made by NACWR advisor K Ela while the closing prayer was made by Rector Good Shepherd Seminary, Dimapur-Fr Chacko Karinthayil. The event was attended by prominent social workers, students, representatives from various NGOs and other civil and student bodies.

Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in New Delhi on Saturday. (PTI) G U WA H AT I , J U N 1 1 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for financial support to the state over a period of five years to boost revenue generation efforts of the state government. Sonowal met the Prime Minister in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum and White Paper on the state’s finances. This was the first meeting between the two leaders after Sonowal took charge as Assam Chief Minister. During their 25-minute meeting, the Chief Minister pointed out the state’s precarious financial condition with about Rs 10,000 crore committed liabilities it has inherited from the previous government. Sonowal said the state government has been shifting focus to augment internal resources without depending on the cen-

tral government alone. “However, the state’s existing precarious financial position has necessitated special support from the Centre, more so during the transitional phase,” Sonowal said. The Chief Minister further pointed out that his government has been trying to tap the inner strengths of the state within its limited capacity and generate internal resources, attract investments and build on the core strengths. “Our government has decided to surge ahead with Restructuring Systems and Technology for Augmentation of Resources for Transformed Assam (ReSTART Assam) to mop up maximum possible resources through a coordinated and concerted mission mode programme with four-pronged action plan,” Sonowal said. Pointing out that the time-bound action plan would

bear fruit only after two to three years, the Chief Minister said in the interim period when there is a need to focus on development, the state needs about Rs 10,000 crore to honour the committed liabilities accumulated over a period of time and other liabilities arising out of pay revision of the employees. The Chief Minister also requested the Prime Minister for financial assistance for infrastructure projects such as roads, power and IT as well as the service sector. Sonowal requested the Prime Minister to release Rs 10,000-crore crude oil royalty to the state and to use his good offices to ensure the price of crude oil at pre-discounted rate as has been the case with Gujarat following an interim order of the Supreme Court. The Chief Minister pleaded for early release of Rs 1,226 crore that the Ministry of Water Resources owes to the state under the Flood Management Programme (AIBP-FMP). “Assam has been deprived to a great extent which is evident from the fact that while the state was awarded a revenue deficit grant of only Rs 3,379 crore during 2015-20, smaller states like Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir were rewarded handsomely by 14th Finance Commission,” he said while urging the Prime Minister to allot Rs 5,000 crore annually as a special one-time revenue deficit grant so that the state can take up development projects as envisaged in the Vision Document 2016-2025.

Authorities working to restore rail service in NE

AG A RTA L A , J U N 1 1 (IANS): Authorities are working on a war-footing to restore rail traffic that has remained disrupted for nearly a month in southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and western Manipur due to incessant rain and subsequent landslides. Tripura Bharatiya Janata Party President Biplab Deb said on Friday that Assam Public Works Department (Roads and Highways) Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya too had assured him of all steps to help restore road traffic in the region at the earliest, disrupted due to damage to National Highway-8. The railway line and national highways pass through southern Assam to connect Tripura, Mizoram and western Manipur with the rest of India to supply foodgrains, fertilisers, petroleum products, construction material and other essential commodities. Tripura is the worst affected as the 585-km National Highway 8 -- its only connection with the rest of India through Assam and Meghalaya -- was severely damaged in adjoining southern Assam. About a 20-km stretch between Lower Powa in Assam and Churaibari in northern Tripura has turned into a slushy field after the downpour. According to Tripura government officials, due to the damage to National Highway-8, hundreds of oil tankers, goods-laden trucks

and other vehicles have been stranded in Lower Powa area in southern Assam. Disruption in rail and road traffic has led to prices of essential commodities soaring in the region. “We are trying to restore the rail line within a week. Our workers and engineers are working round-the-clock to restore rail service,” Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Administrative Officer Ajit Pandit told IANS over phone. He said :”We have roped in engineers from Austria as well as other parts of India to use their expertise at the trouble spots. We are using all options to open the vital railway route soon.” After removal of debris and repair of railway tracks, goods trains from Guwahati to Tripura, Mizoram and southern Assam were operated in the past two days on an experimental basis though conditions were still not conducive for running passenger trains on the route. “Clearing huge mudslides apart from boulders from a large portion of the tracks at Fidhing and 11 other places in Dima Hasao district (in Assam) is a huge task,” Pandit added. Huge landslides damaged railway tracks first on April 27. Rail traffic was restored on May 6, only to be disrupted again from May 13 in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

Oppn to protest during BJP meet; AAP denied permission

SP workers shout slogans and burn effigy of PM Narendra Modi during a protest against his visit in Allahabad on Saturday. (PTI) ALLAHABAD, JUN 11 (PTI): Ahead of BJP’s national executive meeting here, rival parties have announced plans for protests in the city though AAP has been denied permission for it, prompting it to move high court. Congress said it will observe June 12, the day of commencement of the Prime Minister’s visit, as ‘Pol Khol Diwas’ (Day of Expose) while its youth wing has announced a city bandh tomorrow. BJP’s rivals are hoping to take the sheen off the highprofile event being held by the saffron party here as it gears up for the Assembly

elections which are less than a year away. UPCC General Secretary Mukund Tiwari said, “We will hold meetings in all the 12 assembly segments of the district to expose the claims made by the Modi government which has failed to fulfill the promises made during the last general elections”. Congress’ youth wing and its students’ body NSUI have given a call for a city-wide “bandh” tomorrow. Queried on calling a bandh on Sunday when most establishments are close, NSUI District President Jitesh Mishra said, “Many com-

mercial establishments remain open on Sundays. “Also, our stress is not on disrupting business but on making the common people aware as to how they are being cheated by the Modi government”. Aam Aadmi Party sought “permission” for staging a demonstration and waving black flags from a “safe distance” to protest the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden visit here. On June 6, a letter jointly signed by Sanjay Singh, member of the Political Affairs Committee of AAP, and Shimla Shri, the party’s national executive member, was submitted to District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar. The DM replied in a letter that no permission could be granted for any type of protest demonstration during the PM’s visit. Unfazed by the refusal, Shri, who was also the party’s candidate from Phulpur in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, has shot off another letter to the DM claiming that their stir was “in no way aimed at creating any hurdles in the way of the Prime Minister” and requesting for a “review” of the decision.

national JMM MLA arrested RANCHI, JUN 11 (PTI): High drama was witnessed on Saturday when JMM MLA Chamra Linda was arrested in connection with an arrest warrant as voting in the Rajya Sabha elections to fill two seats from Jharkhand was on today, raising questions over police action. Two Congress MLAs, who also faced arrest in separate cases, however, voted in the election over which the party expressed relief. Earlier, the Congress was planning to move the Supreme Court against possible arrest of its MLAs--Nirmala Devi and Devendra Singh--in what they saw was a bid to prevent them from voting in the election. Now that its two MLAs have voted, the party has dropped plans of moving the Supreme Court, Congress legal cell head K C Mittal and former minister Salman Khursheed said in Delhi. While Union Minister Muktar Abbas Naqvi, a candidate of the ruling BJP, seems sure of a victory, there is a keen contest between BJP’s Mahesh Poddar and JMM chief Shibu Soren’s son Basant for the second seat. A united opposition can upset BJP’s calculations over the second seat. Linda was facing an arrest warrant in a 2013 case, in which he had been allegedly involved in a scuffle at assembly gate in late evening hours, official sources said.

Remove all religious structures encroaching on roads: Allahabad HC LUCKNOW, JUN 11 (PTI): Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to remove or shift religious structures “in any form” which encroach on public roads including sideways. It asked the state government to ensure that no religious structure in any form, whatsoever, shall be allowed or permitted to be raised on public roads including highways, streets, pathways and lanes and warned that any violation will be considered as criminal contempt by administration and police officials. A Lucknow bench of justices Sudhir Agarwal and Rakesh Srivastva said religious structures raised after January 2011 that encroach on public roads will be removed forthwith and a compliance report shall be submitted by concerned district magistrate to the state government within two months. Those raised earlier should be shifted to private land or removed within six months. It gave the directions yesterday while disposing of a writ petition filed by 19 locals against alleged encroachment of public pathway land in Mohalla Dauda Khera in Lucknow by construction of

a temple. Observing that every citizen has a fundamental right of movement and this can not be allowed to be infringed by a few violators in public and apathy of state authorities, the high court also directed the state government to chalk out a plan so as to ensure that public roads were not obstructed due to observance of religious activities. It said such activities should not create hindrance in the smooth flow of traffic and movement of public on roads and should be performed strictly at the places identified for the same or belonging to concerned religious sections or at any private place. “In our view, those who create such obstructions as also those who perpetuate it by taking care/managing such structures and also those who fail to take any action in law, all deserve to be taken to task and make responsible and accountable for their respective misdeeds,” the court said. The court said it should be ensured that “no religious structure in any form, whatsoever, shall be allowed/permitted to be raised on public road (including highways), street,

pathway and lane, including sideways which is part and parcel of road and belong to the state”. It directed the state government through Chief Secretary to issue a general direction in this regard to all DMs and Senior Superintendent of Police/Superintendent of Police including the officers responsible for maintenance of roads (including highways) in the state. The court said if any such structure was existing and has been raised in the last five years, “the same shall be removed forthwith and a compliance report shall be submitted by DMs of concerned districts to Principal Secretary/Secretary of concerned department, who shall submit a comprehensive report to the Chief Secretary within next two months”. For other such structures, “a scheme shall be worked out and executed to shift the same to a private land offered by beneficiaries of such religious structures or persons responsible for its management or to remove it, within six months and a compliance report shall be submitted in the manner as said above,” it said.

Lalu Prasad Yadav turns 69 PATNA, JUN 11 (PTI): Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday greeted RJD supreme Lalu Prasad Yadav on his 69th birthday. ‘Yoga Guru’ Baba Ramdev also called up Prasad to greet him on his birthday, the RJD chief ’s close aide and MLA Bhola Prasad Yadav said. Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind also called up Prasad to wish him on his birthday, he said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited 10 Circular road residence of Rabri Devi to greet Prasad on his birthday. The duo are known in political circle as “Bade Bhai” (Lalu) and “Chotte Bhai” (Kumar). Earlier, Prasad had cut a cake weighing 69 kg, which is equal to his birthday number, flanked by wife Rabri Devi and two sons Tejaswi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav. Speaking on the occasion, the CM told reporters that “life of Lalu Prasad has been full of struggle. Reaching to this height in politics from a humble background he comes from is inspiring.”

Former RBI governor C Rangarajan gave away the awards. The awards, instituted by Prime Point Foundation and emagazine PreSense, were given to five Lok Sabha MPs and one former Rajya Sabha member for their performance in Parliament. Toppers’ muddle ‘kingpin’ Bachha Rai in police net PATNA/HAJIPUR, JUN 11 (PTI): The alleged kingpin of the toppers’ scandal in Bihar Intermediate examination, Bachha Rai was arrested after he surrendered at Bhagwanpur police station in Vaishali district. Bachha Rai, who is Secretary-cum Principal of controversy-hit Bishun Rai College, arrived at the Bhagwanpur police station to give himself up from where the police arrested him, Hajipur police sources said. “We have arrested Bachha Rai,” Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj, who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on merit muddle in Bihar’s +2 examination, told PTI. Maharaj said the police had been on hot pursuit of the accused and netted him on Saturday. Bachha Rai is the Secretary-cum Principal of Bishun Rai College in Vaishali district from where Arts and Science toppers Ruby Rai and Saurabh Shrestha belonged to respectively. “We will interrogate him intensively,” Maharaj said. Post-mortem

Vol. XXVI NO. 184 Dimapur, Sunday, June 12, 2016

Care and concern

W

ith changing lifestyles, there has been a sharp increase in the demand for domestic hands in many homes. It is undeniable that almost every home in Nagaland has some domestic worker (s) of every shape, size, color, creed and age etc. Domestic workers are either children from very poor economic background(either from some rural areas of Nagaland or outside), who are hardly paid well. There are also a large number of domestic workers who are non-Nagas employed on monthly payment basis. In comparison, the latter category received better remuneration and even perks than the former. With growing number of NGOs espousing the cause of domestic workers, today the matter can no longer be ignored. Several issues related with domestic workers are : non-recognition, undervaluation, low wages, excessive work hours, lack of benefits or social security, unfair termination of employment, sexual and moral harassment and lack of organisation. A larger segment of domestic workers come from far flung villages of other parts of India and even from within Nagaland. They lack basic education and due to economic burden, were compelled to choose menial work like farming, sweeping, cooking, gardening, washing clothes , dropping and picking up kids from home to school etc. As most of these jobs (barring few) are more routine in nature, it does not require any specific form of training or education and hence become an easy means of livelihood. Our state political parties also need to show their sensitivity for such an issue and come out of a tunnel vision of seeing only the ‘political issue’ rights of people and remind the centre of its obligation. The laws of our country too have been similarly amended to benefit a select group only, leaving the needy out of its ambit. The other segment of domestic workers are mostly underage children who have either been trafficked or given away due to extreme economic poverty. There are also some where children are made to work long hours like slaves of benevolent masters. All in all, it is time to bring the topic out of the closet and discuss the issue of violating the rights of children to be cared, given education and opportunities, with the gravity it deserves. All it needs to lure the child away from the poverty-stricken parents is promise of education and job and of course, the advance money that heavily tilts the balance. In states like Nagaland, where laws against child labour are not being strictly enforced, many minor children from other states can be found working as domestic hands. In most cases, though children are not normally beaten or ill treated, yet they are deprived of growing up as normal children. That means, deprived of education, playing time, enough sleep and even nutritious food needed for healthy growth. It is true that children are the most vulnerable lot in society and do need guidance and protection. Of the nearly fifty thousand children reported missing each year throughout the country, hardly a dozen or so are found. In order to protect and safeguard the lives of the children, the parents, teachers and the institutions have to play a major role to ensure that they remain safe. The larger picture is that the lot of domestic workers should improve while trafficking in children or child labour needs to be eliminated.

DailyDevotion Getting There (1) Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28 Where sin and sorrow stops, and the song of the saint starts. Do I really want to get there? I can right now. The questions that truly matter in life are remarkably few, and they are all answered by these words— “Come to Me.” Our Lord’s words are not, “Do this, or don’t do that,” but— “Come to me.” If I will simply come to Jesus, my real life will be brought into harmony with my real desires. I will actually cease from sin, and will find the song of the Lord beginning in my life. Have you ever come to Jesus? Look at the stubbornness of your heart. You would rather do anything than this one simple childlike thing— “Come to Me.” If you really want to experience ceasing from sin, you must come to Jesus. Jesus Christ makes Himself the test to determine your genuineness. Look how He used the word come. At the most unexpected moments in your life there is this whisper of the Lord— “Come to Me,” and you are immediately drawn to Him. Personal contact with Jesus changes everything. Be “foolish” enough to come and commit yourself to what He says. The attitude necessary for you to come to Him is one where your will has made the determination to let go of everything and deliberately commit it all to Him. “…and I will give you rest”— that is, “I will sustain you, causing you to stand firm.” He is not saying, “I will put you to bed, hold your hand, and sing you to sleep.” But, in essence, He is saying, “I will get you out of bed— out of your listlessness and exhaustion, and out of your condition of being half dead while you are still alive. I will penetrate you with the spirit of life, and you will be sustained by the perfection of vital activity.” Yet we become so weak and pitiful and talk about “suffering” the will of the Lord! Where is the majestic vitality and the power of the Son of God in that?

‘I

The grand architect

n the beginning God created the heavens and the earth’ Human beings debate in endless circles about the Big Bang theory; yet, even today, no scientist can prove conclusively that the universe simply ‘popped’ out of nothingness or created itself. Christians, on the other hand, possess the whole truth, and nothing but the truth directly from the Manufacturer because of the Bible. The account and the dimensions of creation never cease to amaze me. For those of us in love with the night sky, we see the vivid imagination of God take shape in the form of the celestial bodies. ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.’ Job 9:9 directly talks about the Bear, the Orion and the Pleiades – these are all constellations we can study every night. Even long before man discovered that the earth is not flat but round, the inherent Word of God had already testified to this fact in Isaiah 40:22. All branches of science are based on laws which are consistent; this clearly points to the knowledge we have of our God as a God of order who reminds us time and again to keep His laws. Those who study and conduct investigations, however, should bear in mind that scientific knowledge is the result of meticulous experiments – we are striving to reverse-engineer the Grand Master’s design and deduce its purposes. The worldly knowledge offers us scraps and bits of the great

jigsaw puzzle; many a time we are in error, for human beings are flawed and imperfect. However, even little is much when God is in it. Our perception of the here and now is sufficient to leave us staggered on how intricately God designed the universe, and how utterly involved He is with His handiwork. It is an overwhelming task to list the whole account of the Bible’s take on science simply because there are too many; here is one: In Job 38:24, The Lord speaks to Job on the dispersion of light. It was only four centuries ago that Sir Isaac Newton proved through his prism experiments that white light is composed of seven colors which can be parted and recombined. Beyond the call of duty and the varied hassles of life, spending a little time with nature daily will fill us with a profound sense of peace. We can hear the voice of The Creator in the whisper of the wind and witness His love for us in the beauty of a flower. To pause, stare and marvel at how an old oak tree was packed into a little seed is a free gift of joy because synthetic seeds are stillunfeasible. Even the study on the mechanism of the human body – the perfect control and co-ordination of the various organ systems, the self-repair and defense, the relationship between the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional state of our mind leaves us in awe and wonder. As wisdom and knowledge increase, we too automatically echo Albert Einstein’s

Yimchungrü demand Justice and Equality

belief, “the more I study science, the more I believe in God.” Everything that ever existed was created by God simply by Word. Man is still unraveling the mysteries of the universe; it is only a fragment we know today, the full knowledge will be imparted only when we meet Him face to face. The majesty of the heavenly bodies and the splendor of the earth recount the story of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God. All form of nature is an attribute to our God – the Alpha and the Omega. I would imagine Him smile in amusement when mere humans, composed of dust, become vain and claim credit for discoveries and fail to acknowledge the Creator. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by science. This spirit of inquiry led me to read up on books and articles from astronomy to endocrinology, organic chemistry to quantum physics – then, completely humbled in trying to find scientific rational explanations to all my thought processes – I came full circle with the firm conclusion that the answers to all questions have already been answered in the Creator’s manual. The more I delve into the study of theorems and the laws of science, the more I see God. It is as C. S. Lewis rightly pointed out, “We may ignore but we can nowhere evade the presence of God. The world (and universe) is crowded with Him. He walks everywhere incognito.” Arennungla Jamir

T

he Western Yimchungrü Students’ Union ( WYSU ) is constrained to issue a press release against numerous accounts of lawlessness in Tuensang District and disappearance of an individual ,a family and brutal murder of police personnel pertaining of Tuensang District. The public faith and trust in the Administration and security personnel are fading away day by day. The recent dissapearance of S.Kumcho who was on his way to Tuensang, went missing between Helipong and Sotokur village and his whereabouts are yet to be confirmed , even after a passage of 2 months since 11/04/2016 is a case in point. The Yimchungrü community also wants the full report for the illegal abduction of Smti.Kiuthsangla Yimchungrü and her teenage daughter Ms.Chilula Yimchungrü by miscreants , on 09/12/2014, and whether a SIT has been constituted for the same. The Yimchungrü citizens are not safe even in their own District, and are very vulnerable as anything can happen to them anytime, in the form of physical attack, damage to properties and even loss of lives. A police personnel of DEF Tuensang , Mr.Chipong Yimchungrü of Chessore village was abducted from his house, tortured mercilessly and was admitted to civil hospital by the security, but later he was dragged out of it and hacked to pieces by unruly mobs belonging to neighbouring Tribe on 06/02/2015 in front of few security personnels. Such incidents has occured due to the failure of the Administration and security Agencies in providing security to the Yimchungrü populace in the state. The initiation of corrective action by the

Administration has been inordinately delayed in all occassions. So far the Yimchungrü’s are cooperating with the SIT and with the Govt mediators to sort out the afore said matters. But the investigations unfortunately have thus far not been comprehensive and are at best one sided, hence not conclusive. The root cause and actual perpetrators of all these illegal incidents cannot be ignored, especially while taking into account the 2014 case. The Yimchungru people are ready to protest and raise their voices against injustice and harassment if such one sided investigations are persisted with. Yimchungrüs people have been patient and tolerated all the said atrocities , injustice and illegal actions in Tuensang and Kiphire Districts and still have been standing true as a law abiding citizens of the state for the greater interest of the state and to promote peace and harmony. The students’ community and Yimchungru citizens lastly urged the Administration and the SIT incharge to work on the evidence available and initiate necessary action so as to bring justice to the aggrieved family members and further requested the ENPO to promote and maintain “Peace Zone “ under ENPO Jurisdictions in letter and spirit and not merely on paper. The Union acknowledged the CCSU for highlighting the case of the missing mother Kiuthsangla Yimchungrü and her teenage daughter Ms.Chilula in their agitations and protest by shedding all boundary and tribal demarcations and stand for justice and peace. Climatic concerns, irresponsible lifestyle (From previous issue) Collective responsibility with positive outcome and shared anxiety for making it our own surroundings a better place needs to be culminated in all of us without any delay. Predictions about climate change and its implications brings more gloomier thoughts and worries no matter how much we try to be positive. How can we expect ourselves to be optimistic with our future when nothing seems to be going well? There are predictions that India will be facing with acute water scarcity by 2030-40 is another alarming issue. Another issue of creating multiple wastes in our local context is during the weddings season. Our big fat Naga weddings see huge amount of food wastage with half eaten plates of food strewn all over, half drunk water bottles scattered all over the tables and the venue, spoons, forks, napkins, paper wastage etc. Aren’t all those a product of Mother Nature? Mass weddings seem to be the solution in order to save time, energy, traffic pollution, wastages and ultimately conserve all those things that are sucked out from Mother Nature and the good earth. In a surprising yet a very welcoming move now in some community to save expenditures, time, and energy wedding invitations are being done over the phone personally. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle seems to be the only quick fix solution that will yield immediate results and atleast solve some impending dooms at this time. Walking and cycling atleast, if we cannot in the blistering Dimapur daytime heat, we can in the morning and evening hours to ease our traffic snarls. Eticketing for train and air travels, LCD display of programmes instead of printing

programmes wasting money or paper for just an hour or a two are now heralded by new breed of environment conscious people to curb wastage of paper. Yes surely our habits need to change. Driving only when we have to and not just because we want to will save fuel, energy and ultimately less pollution of the environment. By tele-communicating we save energy and cause less pollution which is the need of the hour. The absence of parks and playgrounds in almost all localities by our never ending greed of rampant encroachment also prevents many to undertake even short strolls during evening and morning hours and due to lack of clean fresh air. It clutters our thought for clear clean thinking too with haphazard concrete jungle prowling all around us. Deforestation due to ever increasing population to accommodate human settlements is one gravest issue concerning climate change causing serious ripple effects like soil pollutions, garbage disposal problems, carbon emissions, blockade of clean fresh air, rising temperature, depleting ground water table etc. The problems are way too many even to list it all out. But we still control the future to a certain extent, however, as the magnitude of shifting weather patterns and the frequency of extreme climate events depends on how much more greenhouse gases we emit. We aren’t facing the end of the world as envisaged by many environmentalists in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but if we do nothing to mitigate climate change then billions of people will suffer and a catastrophic end seems much obvious. If anything needs justice right now, the climate needs it the most at present

Clarification sought from directorate state lotteries

I

t is a well-known fact that the Nagaland State Lotteries had been banned for the last 3-4 years and the government order still stands upto date. Surprisingly it has been learnt from Naginimora town under Mon district despite the government standing order still runs the state lotteries such as: Bhagya, Rekha, Bhagya Ban, Double Dice Lottery etc under the patronage of some individuals from outside the state. Till date no effort from the administration or police department has been reported to close down these illegal gambling outlets for reasons best known to them. Subsequent to the government order banning these lotteries and gambling outlets, all other district barring (Naginimora town in particular) Mon district have closed down these outlets. Why the special privilege to one particular town or district? Defying or ignoring the government order openly will be tantamount to criminal activities inviting immediate legal actions from the law enforcing agencies. But why the hesitation from these law agencies and allow few individuals to flourish their business illegally and openly daring a government order? Obviously the administration and the police are benefitting from such illegal houses banned by the government itself. I therefore, through this write-up demand an early clarification from the concerned authorities to clarify their stand against the back-drop for not implementing the government order and the failure to book the individuals running flourishing lottery/gambling business houses in Naginimora town under Mon district openly without hindrances or warning from the law enforcing agencies till date. times. The Earth is our mother and her natural resources are sacred; they are God’s energy and how we respect and utilize them is what will determine the fate of the world. The solution to current environmental concerns is to change our consciousness from exploiting the earth for our own purposes to protecting and honoring the earth for God’s purposes.97% of the world’s climate scientists agree that human activity is causing dangerous global warming, threatening life as we know it. At previous climate summits the world’s politicians have failed to reach meaningful agreement on how to respond. But the UN believes there is still some hope of global agreement in Paris 2015 if the moral call for action is so loud that politicians can’t ignore it. Government and the people together need to act without any delay or else we are creating our own Doomsday Conspiracy Theory in Practicality. This planet is our one and only home. We have no other choice — we must care for it. “How often in life do you have this ability to plan ahead for? If you knew something would happen in your life and you had 10 years to get ready for it, wouldn’t you do that, or would you sit on your hands and wait for it to hit you?” I think addressing environmental issues is critical and overrides everything else for the people of the world besides terrorism. Many new diseases are emerging which is probably because something’s wrong with their environment. If roads are flooded due to unusual rainfall or storm surge, and people can’t get to work, it’s because of the environment. If deforestation washes sediments into the rivers, sea, destroying water-bodies and

threatening livelihoods, it’s because of the environment. If we compromise environmental health, we can’t move forward socially, economically or in any other way. It’s important that communities be intimately involved with the decisionmaking process. Because we are the ones who will be the most effected by whatever activities we are trying to undertake in future. We need to emphasize on nature-based activities and work in tandem with more conventional manmade constructions. Issues like overfishing, habitat destruction and poverty are all inter-related, and solving them will require that all aspects of the problem be addressed. As affluence increases, consumers demand greater variety, quality and quantity of food and all material things. Scientific method and high yielding variety to meet the demand of our growing population seem to be only aggravating the situation. Clearing more wildernesses to plant crops threatens biodiversity and is not sustainable. Recently, a local newspaper correspondent reported that Nagaland eats even its official wildlife totems like Mithun,Tragopan and Hornbills. Now forget about other poor creatures of the wild found in our land because every wild animal for Nagas are a ‘Dawai’. True to the comic line ‘Nagas eat anything that moves’. Our gluttonous habits of devouring even our heritage are sure bringing them on brink of extinction does not augur well for either us or our coming generations. Forgive me if am wrong but I haven’t come across any Naga vegetarian yet. Nagaland on a positive note has been declared as the Amur Falcon Capital of the world. All thanks to the initiatives of the state govern-

ment, the people of the Wokha district and the concerned NGOs. Mithun rearing in Phek has given an advantage in restoring Phek’s forest cover. It is a win-win situation initiative for the people as well both flora and fauna of the region. The Governor in his address on World Environment Day stated that around 400 communities/villages in Nagaland(Community Conservation Areas) are conserving their forests and natural resources which accounts for 1/3 rd of the forest cover. Unless our commitments turn towards more health, less poverty, more food, less waste, more biodiversity, less degradation, we are going to see only gloomier days ahead. Sol let us rescue farmlands, let us help biodiversity flourish. We have only one planet and we’re using it at the rate 0f much faster than it can take. What we’re asking it to provide is simply not sustainability. It’s time to think differently, live differently. It involves not only the world leaders but each one of us in finding a way through the complexities of accepting responsibility for the causes, agreeing what needs to be done and making ourselves available to prevent the situation from getting worse. Across the world, people from different faith and communities are coming together and are now involved in these kinds of activities to help communities cope with the impacts of climate change and to shift to clean energy use. Education and awareness activities at our local level in schools, colleges and especially our churches will surely help everyone shrink their carbon footprint at our homes, at work and in communities. Fear and powerful prayers

A

lmost everyone, male or female; old or young of the Latur village was frightened, hearing the repeated booming gun shots, as if the bullets were flying just above their heads – signifying the beginning of anti-Christ era. Few village folks seemed busy on their parts recording the horrific scene of the village (just to figure out the villagers’ fright as a mocking figure) – the village once known for integrity and peace-loving peoples. Before this fateful day, no man or woman of this village seemed so committed as a prayer warrior. The time and the situation had changed, where the elders were quite frentic in search of their personal Holy Bible, which they use only on a Sunday morning service. Few even forgot the place where the Bible was placed after the previous Sunday morning service. I rubbed eyes and even pinched myself to elucidate; what I see now are not dreams. My own people were so much prayerful – bursting out their hidden sins, grievances; pleading for forgiveness for their wrong-doings in the past. Some even confessed responsibly that they’ve ceased sparing times for short fellowship together with families – all only because of the worldly pleasures and anxiousness.

Slowly and steadily, the armed personnel from both the directions retreated back, like cat’s move, bringing the feelings of satisfaction and igniting the light of hopefulness. Subsequently, after the disgusting scenario, I wished to go to the Church – at least for thanksgiving. Dazed and astonished, I stood at the main door for almost 10-12 minutes, unable to neither speak nor make slight movement. Why? The local Church was completely full and packed, not a single seat available. Never knew earlier that the village comprised of so many believers in numbers. A sense of contentment ran through the nerves to every parts of the body and secondly felt honoured to be a member of this Christian village, where Christ is the sole Commander and we, His soldiers. I wished if the similar firings continue at least once or twice a year, with fright making everyone prepared and closer to Christ. Blessed rewards are never achieved without hurdles and thorns. First seek His kingdom and later everything will be definitely added unto you. “In every nation he that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him.” [Acts 10:35] Dipen Lama, Administrator, Baptist High School, Jalukie Nagaland

chasing low carbon economies must be initiated. Investment activities to support sustainable economic development must be implemented. Let us plant trees and embrace green technologies, such as solar, wind and biogas. Let us appeal to all levels of governance for polices that mean sustainable action and brighter futures. Today let your own individual actions be heroic and let us all together do some historic act to preserve our environment for the coming generations. Today, change must begin with you and me so that there may quite simply be a tomorrow for all. The greatest threat to our planet is that we think someone will save. This is the only one, there is no planet B. An environment which is not safe for plants and animals is neither for humans too. We should all learn from Bhutan which has become the first carbon negative country in the world. The country’s forest absorbs more carbon dioxide each year than it produces.72% of the country is still forested and its constitution guarantees atleast 60% will remain that way .In June 2015 a team of 100 volunteers planted 49672 trees in just one hour setting a new world record. This March 82000 households planted trees to celebrate the birth of their Queens’ first child. This tiny kingdom with a population of just 7 and a half lakhs is ranked number one in Human Development Index making it the world’s happiest country. Bhutan is the only country in the world to measure Gross National Happiness to measure its Growth. And now yet again, BHUTAN HAS SHOWN THE WORLD TO REVERSE THE GLOBAL WARMING. Are we even listening? Reader’s Post

The road more travelled Sir,

Anywhere in the world, the road leading to the hospital is always the best maintained as patients need to be transported safely. However, in the case of district hospital Wokha, the road starting from police point in the centre of the town to the hospital is nothing but nightmare ride for the patients. Instead of reaching the hospital safely, most patients end up in more troubled state than the ailment itself. Due to the road conditions many brand new vehicles also end up needing major repairing but no one is bothered about it or say anything. If the concerned department and the government neglects the road that leads to hospital where people can be healed, then of what use is there for a hospital in the first place. Upon this urgent need, the public have decided to maintain the road from police point to district hospital, Wokha and would declare it public private road where tax would be imposed at the rate of Rs. 1000/- per trip. Perhaps, the district planning development board (DPDB) never debates on such an important agenda as the need for a good hospital road. Yechury writes to Swaraj on BJP-linked outfit - govt nexus

NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): Raising objections to a BJPlinked Malaysia-based outfit’s claim of having Indian Government’s “official” support for its “unofficial” International Yoga Day event, CPI(M) has approached External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, seeking “proper” probe into the matter. In his June 8 letter to Swaraj, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury also sought the issue of the outfit, Overseas Friends of BJP, Malaysia, making such a declaration through a poster to be discussed during meeting of the Ministry’s Consultative Committee, of which he is a member. The poster, Yechury said, declares the organisation’s June 19 event is being supported by High Commission of India, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Ayush and Indian Council of Cultural Relations. “Supporting activities abroad that strengthen public opinion in those countries about India and spread goodwill is understandable. “But so far as I have known, the Government of India or its Commissions abroad or any of its other arms and institutions do not support the declared activities of political parties abroad. . .I think this is a very serious matter that

needs to be properly investigated,” Yechury said in the letter. The Rajya Sabha member further said that there have been complaints in the past of how the ruling party at the Centre has allegedly used subtle methods to promote activities of its affiliates in some countries. “But what we see here is a brazen effort and the public declaration that a voluntary unofficial event is being officially supported by your ministry, its mission in Malaysia and other organisations of the government of India,” Yechury said and demanded the issue be discussed when the Committee meets next. According to its website, the Overseas Friends of BJP, Malaysia is an outfit that works for “projecting a positive and correct image of India and its people in that country and foreign media, and correct any distortions in the media’s

Accusing BJP of stoking communal passions over Dadri incident to polarise voters ahead of 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, CPI(M) Saturday staged a protest here and sought removal of Union ministers Mahesh Sharma and Sanjeev Balyan for their alleged involvement in “fanning” such sentiments. “The Hindutva forces are trying to polarise communally the entire western Uttar Pradesh over alleged ‘beef consumption’. This poisonous strategy is being used at a time when Assembly polls are around the corner there,” a statement quoted CPI(M) Delhi state secretary K M Tiwari as saying. Tiwari said reported statement by Balyan, the Union Minister of State for Agriculture, seeking probe of “all those who had eaten beef found outside Mohammad Akhlaq’s residence” was “shocking”, and he sought his removal. “Besides this, the top leadership of the BJP from the area including Union Minister of Culture Mahesh Sharma and (BJP MLA) Sangeet Som are also involved in this conspiracy,” Tiwari alleged, and “Sharma too should be sacked.”

JNU event’s raw footage found authen tic NEW DELHI, JUN 11 (PTI): The raw video footage of the controversial February 9 JNU event, on which a sedition case was registered against JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and two others, has been found to be “authentic” by the CBI forensic lab, police claimed on Saturday. The raw footage of the event, obtained from a Hindi news channel, was sent to the CBI forensic lab here for examination along with camera, memory card, a CD containing the clip, wires and other equipment, they said. “The CBI lab sent a report to Delhi Police’s Special Cell on June 8 saying the raw footage was authentic,” a police source said. Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Arvind Deep confirmed the receipt of report but did not divulge the details. Earlier, Delhi Police had sent four video clips of

the event to Gandhinagarbased Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) which in its report, in May, had said that they were genuine. However, a Delhi government-ordered probe, into a set of seven video clippings of the controversial event sent to the Hyderabad-based Truth Labs, had found two clips to be manipulated while others as genuine. Police, however, maintained that the FIR into

the matter was registered on the basis of the raw video footage, obtained from a news channel on a CD, and not on the clippings which were aired on TV channels. In the FIR, police had claimed that in the video a group of students, led by JNU student Umar Khalid, could be seen raising anti-India slogans, 21 of which were mentioned in an interim report filed a few days later into the case.

New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): Gold rose for a fourth straight session on Saturday with prices rising by Rs 150 to Rs 29,500 per ten grams at the bullion market on positive cues from overseas markets amid sustained buying by jewellers. Silver followed suit and recaptured the cr ucial Rs 41,000-mark per kg by gaining Rs 215 to Rs 41,065 per kg due to increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said apart from a firming global trend on speculation that US interest rates will stay lower for longer, pick up in buying by jewellers at domestic spot market mainly attributed the rise in precious metal prices. Globally, gold rose by 0.30 per cent to $1,273.30 an ounce and silver by 0.29 per cent to $17.28 an ounce in New York in yesterday’s trade. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity advanced by Rs 150 each to Rs 29,500 and Rs 29,350 per

sate this loss of revenue by passing it on,” Sharat Dhall, President of Yatra.com, told IANS. This, he said, could retard growth. “Though the steps are well meaning, the government should rather focus on long term objectives -- like development of infrastructure and regional connectivity -to give a boost to passenger traffic and expand the market which is still hugely underpenetrated.” A look at the terms of flag carrier Air India revealed that the airline, on a oneway ticket to Mumbai with a base fare of 2,527.00, charges Rs.2,000 towards cancellation if made more than 24 hours before departure. But if it is within 24 hours, the levy comprises basic fare plus airline fuel charge. Jet Airways since January last year has a zero penalty rule for cancellations made before 24 hours of departure if the reservation is made through their website or the mobile app. These rules, officials said, will be applicable to Indian carriers and include the terms for both their domestic and international operations. “Foreign carriers operating to and from India shall refund the tickets in accordance with regulations

lations announced within 24 hours of departure, the compensation amount has been enhanced to up to Rs 10,000. This apart, refunds will also be applicable on all fares, including promotional and special rates. “It shall also be the prerogative of passenger to decide whether to get cash refund or hold the amount in credit.” Also taking note of arbitrary levy on excess baggage, the minister said such charges for up to 5 kg beyond the 15 kg limit can be charged at no more than Rs 100 per kg. “The regulations are also being amended to ensure significant improvement in the facilities to persons with disabilities,” the minister said. The proposals evoked mixed reactions from experts. “Its not a good idea for the government to get into the pricing mechanism of an industry which is already very competitive,” said Amrit Pandurangi, Senior Director, Deloitte in India. “Rather they should have tried to get the cancellation fees being charged by airlines widely published so that passengers can make an informed choice,” Pandurangi told IANS. “These are positive proposals, but they are expected to impact very few passengers only. These might also lead to overall ticket price increase as airlines will seek to compen-

New Delhi, Jun 11 (IANS): Taking serious note of the indiscriminate policies of some domestic airlines on flight cancellations and refunds, the Civil Aviation Ministry on Saturday proposed a number of steps to rein them in and said such charges won’t be allowed to exceed the base fare. At a press conference here, Civil Aviation Minister P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju said the proposals, which will be finalised soon, also call for airlines to ensure that refunds on cancelled tickets are made within 15 days, even if the bookings were made through agents or portals. “The proposal will be put up on the ministry’s Website for 15 days during which stakeholders are free to give their suggestions and comments. After this, the ministry will finalize the proposed amendments and implement them very soon,” an official statement said. During the media conference, the minister outlined the proposals. “All taxes, levies and user and airport development fees shall be refunded in case of no-show and cancellations,” the minister said. “The compensation has also been significantly enhanced to up to Rs 20,000, in case of denied boarding due to over-booking.” In case of flight cancel-

Trump slams Obama for endorsing Clinton

RICHMOND, June 11 (PTI): Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has slammed U.S. President Barack Obama for endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate despite being under “criminal investigation”. Trump, however, said he was ready to face Clinton in the November elections, which he claimed would attract the largest ever voter turnout. “You have a President coming out and endorsing somebody who is under criminal investigation. Is this supposed to be the way the country supposed to be?” Trump told his cheering supporters at an election rally in Richmond, Virginia yesterday. This was Trump’s first public rally since Obama endorsed Clinton as Democratic presidential nominee against Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont. The rally at spacious Richmond Coliseum attracted several thousand people. But the arena having a capacity of 13,500 was more than half empty. Trump said the rally was organised at a short notice of less than one day. The real estate mogul from New York said he would make a major policy speech on Clinton in New Hampshire on Monday. To the cheering of his supporters, Trump described this as a “crooked Hillary” speech. “There is so much corruption. If the system works, she is not allowed to run. It is really unfair for the other

Donald Trump people,” Trump said referring to a latest news report that an Indian American Rajiv Fernando was appointed to the important International Security Advisory board because of his alleged donations to the Clinton Foundation. The Advisory Board advises the State Department on nuclear weapons and other issues of national security. Based out of Chicago, Fernando is a securities trader president of Chopper Trading. According to ABC News, Fernando was a major bundler for the Obama Campaign, raising more than $500,000 for his re-election cycle. And before his appointment at the State Department, he gave between $100,000 and #250,000 to the William J. Clinton Foundation. Trump cited this as another example for corruption by Hillary Clinton. “He made a contribution of $250,000 and all of a sudden

he’s on this very important and vital board,” he said. Reiterating that Clinton should not be allowed to run for the elections, he said he is ready to run against the former U.S. Secretary of State and exuded confidence of winning the election. Trump said the debate against Clinton would be the “biggest debate” in the history and would be the “biggest voter turnout” in the history of this country. Countries like China and Mexico, he alleged are destroying the United States. He reiterated that he would make the wall on the Mexico border, which some day may be called as Trump Wall. “Someday, people would call it a Trump wall,” he said, adding this would be a strong, tall and beautiful wall. “Our taking (sic) is being taken advantage of because we have very stupid people representing in trade. It is not going to happen. We are losing badly. We have the smartest people in the world. But we are using dumbest people,” he alleged. Tr ump claimed that companies would start setting up manufacturing plants in the U.S., because there would be consequences for moving jobs overseas. “We are going to bring jobs back to America,” he said, adding his administration would lower taxes and simplify tax codes. “Hillary Clinton is going to raise taxes beyond anyone imagination,” he claimed.

9 Pak Army Chief asks US to bomb Suicide bombers Libyan forces retake port Taliban hideouts in Afghanistan ‘kill 20’ outside in jihadist bastion Sirte international

I S L A M A BA D, J u n 1 1 (AGENCIES): Pakistan’s powerful army chief General Raheel Sharif has asked the US to target the hideouts of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan terrorists and their chief Mullah Fazlullah in Afghanistan. General Raheel made the demand during a high-level meeting with Commander Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan General John Nicholson and US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson in Islamabad yesterday. In a late night statement, the army said Gen Raheel demanded targeting of Tehrik-eTaliban Pakistan terrorists and Mullah Fazlullah in their hideouts in Afghanistan. “Raising the demand of targeting TTP and Mullah Fazlullah in their bases in Afghanistan, COAS reiterated Pakistan’s resolve not to allow hostile intelligence agencies’ efforts, especially RAW and NDS, of fomenting terrorism,” it said. It was the first visit of high-level officials from the US since fresh tension with Pakistan after the killing of the Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour by a CIA drone in Balochistan on May 21. The army said the regional security situation, with particular reference to border management and peace and stability in Afghanistan in the post-21 May US drone strike environment came under discussion. “Expressing his serious concern on the US drone strike in Balochistan as a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, Gen Raheel highlighted as to how it had impacted the mutual trust and respect

a Syria shrine

General Raheel Sharif and was counter-productive in consolidating the gains of Operation Zarb-e-Azb,” it said. General Raheel said all efforts for durable peace in the region have to be synergised with shared commitment and responsibility in order to make them successful. He said all stakeholders need to understand Pakistan’s challenges with regard to porous border, inter-tribal linkages and decades-old presence of over 3 million refugees.”Blaming Pakistan for instability in Afghanistan is unfortunate,” he said. He said Pakistan is committed to work for a long term peace process for Afghanistan under the four nation Quadrilateral Coordination Group framework, involving Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and the US. Earlier, the high-level US delegation met the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz who warned the American officials of consequences for bilateral ties if attacks like killing of Mansour on May 21 were repeated.

Beirut, Jun 11 (AFP): Suicide bombers struck outside a Shiite shrine near Syria’s capital today, leaving at least 20 people dead, a monitor said, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. The official SANA news agency said two suicide bombers, one in a car, attacked the entrance to the Sayyida Zeinab shrine, which is revered by Shiites around the world. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britishbased monitoring group, said at least 20 people were killed, including 13 civilians, and more than 30 wounded in the blasts. SANA gave a toll of at least 12 dead and 55 wounded. IS claimed the attack via its Amaq news agency, saying it was carried out by three suicide bombers. The shrine, around 10 kilometres south of the centre of Damascus, is heavily guarded by pro-government forces but has still been the target of several jihadist attacks, including those claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group. Syria’s official Al-Ikhbariya channel showed images from the scene of burned-out cars billowing with plumes of black smoke. Firefighters battled to extinguish the flames as shop signs lay in the street. The last attack on Sayyida Zeinab on April 25 killed at least seven and wounded dozens. A string of IS bombings near the shrine in February left 134 people dead, most of them civilians, according to the Observatory. And in January, another attack claimed by IS killed 70 people.

Indian govt is going to be America’s great ally: Ryan Washington, Jun 11 (PTI): The Indian government is going to be America’s “great ally” and there is a need to nurture this relationship, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Paul Ryan has said. In a major foreign policy speech here in which he was highly critical of President Barack Obama’s policies, the US-India relationship was the only aspect of it which was appreciated by Ryan. “I think you need, and in particular, specifically under Modi’s leadership, and he and I have discussed this at great length yesterday, (US-India) have a great potential for the future particularly with the seas, in the Pacific and in the Indian Ocean, making sure that we help police the global commons and international order, namely China building, you know, runways on islands in contested areas,” Ryan said.

He said this in the speech at the Council on Foreign Relations on Thursday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint meeting of the US Congress at his invitation. Modi was the first foreign leader to be invited to address a joint sitting of the Congress under Ryan’s speakership. On Wednesday, Modi and Ryan had a one-on-one interaction before the Prime Minister’s address. Ryan also hosted a lunch for the visiting leader. A day later, Ryan was all in praise for Modi. “I think the Indian (government), the new Indian government, is going to be a great ally of ours and we have better security cooperation with them. That’s one thing that we need to nurture and grow,” Ryan told the audience at the Council on Foreign Relations, a top American think tank.

but its strength inside Sirte and the number of civilians living in the city are unclear. Libya’s unity government forces have fought fierce street battles with the jihadists around a sprawling Gaddafi-era conference centre which once hosted international summits but now houses an IS command centre. An AFP correspondent at the scene reported heavy street fighting yesterday about two kilometres from the Ouagadougou centre. GNA forces used tanks, rocket launchers and artillery, the correspondent said, while the jihadists responded with machineguns, mortar rounds and sniper fire. “We are fighting between houses, on the streets, and we won’t back down before we eliminate them,” said one GNA combatant, who declined to be named. Warplanes have carried out air strikes around the conference centre and other IS positions inside the city, according to social media accounts belonging to the anti- jihadist operation.

Tripoli, Jun 11 (AFP): Forces allied with Libya’s unity government said today they had recaptured the port in the jihadist stronghold of Sirte from Islamic State group fighters who are now surrounded inside the city. The fall of Sirte, the hometown of ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, would be a major setback to the extremists who have also lost territory in Syria and Iraq where they have declared an Islamic “caliphate”. The Libyan forces also retook a residential area in the east of Sirte, the main IS base in the North African country, a spokesman for the forces, Rida Issa, told AFP. The jihadists are now encircled in an area of around five square kilometres inside the city, he said. The rapid pace of the anti-IS advance has surprised the Libyan authorities. “The battle wasn’t as difficult as we thought it would be,” a Libyan government official said Friday. Foreign intelligence services estimate the extremist group has 5,000 fighters in Libya,

This very day you left us, precious and it happened to be Apu and Mama’s wedding anniversary. Words fail to express our pain, yet we celebrate this day because we know you’re in a better place now. We prayed for you, struggling hard with pain, we asked the Lord for healing but the healing never came. And inspite of all our efforts, the good Lord called you Home. Letting you go was the hardest pain when we desperately tried to hold you. We looked to the sky and asked, “Lord you know what’s best, but we don’t understand why?” Not a moment pass by that we don’t think of you, not a single day goes by that we don’t shed tears for you. You will forever remain a beautiful memory in our lives, a memory so true and real. Our love for you will never end, you will always be a part of our life. The pain you endured, the lessons you taught and the lives you transformed, Precious Baby, you were God sent. If only we could hear, you’d say: “I have just gone home, your prayers have been answered, my sickness is gone and I am peacefully laying in the arms of Jesus.”

Filmmakers look NATIONALE INSTITUTE to cash in on ‘Udta FOR JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION Punjab’ vs CBFC row A N.I.C.S.E. INITIATIVE

E

ven as the stalemate between the Censor Board and makers of Udta Punjab drags on with the Bombay High Court adjourning the hearing on the case till Monday, there is strong buzz in industry circles that the film’s June 17 release will be pushed back by a week. In anticipation of this open window and to avoid a clash with Udta Punjab on June 24, at least two films will hit the theatres one Friday earlier. We hear Vivek Agnihotri’s Junooniyat and political drama Shorgul, which were slated to hit the marquee on June 24, will now reach theatres on June 17. Udta Punjab makers are, however, resolute about not changing their initial release date. Yesterday morning, arguments related to the film continued in court where the lawyer representing Censor Board explained the need to effect the suggested cuts which include references to Punjab, expletives and drug scenes. The board apparently also wanted ‘Punjab’ to be removed from the title. While reserving its judgment until Monday, the court observed, “Whether it is TV or cinema, let people see it as everybody has a choice to watch what they want. The multiplex audience is mature enough to understand what it wants to see.” So, with the verdict being deferred, will ‘Udta Punjab’ make it to theatres on June 17? The makers remained unavailable for comment while a source close to the project says, “That call will be taken on Monday after the court’s decision is out. We are on the right track and don’t want to let go of the June 17 date. We are doing whatever we can to get the film released as per schedule. We are not aware of others advancing their films’ dates.” The spokesperson of TSeries, which is producing Junooniyat, confirms that the film will arrive in theatres on June 17, instead of June 24, adding: “Given that our film was ready for release, our distributors Puja Films felt that we should advance our release to June 17 since there is a strong English film.”

AITA announce Davis Cup squad N e w D e l hi , J u n 1 1 (IANS): The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Saturday announced a seven member squad for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against South Korea in Chandigarh from July 15-17. The AITA chose seven players instead of six to accommodate Leander Paes and help to develop camaraderie between the veteran doubles star and Rohan Bopanna -- his partner for the men’s doubles event at the Rio Olympics. Paes was included in the squad at the eleventh hour but the final team for the Davis Cup tie will be announced on July 5. Olympic captain and Davis Cup coach

Zeeshan Ali hoped that the players will gel together and find their rhythm during the build up to the South Korea tie and will be in top form. While Yuki Bhambri is expected to spearhead the Indian charge in the singles category, Bopanna will be the man to watch out for in the doubles. Saketh Myneni and Vishnu Vardhan both have a lot of experience of competing in Davis Cup ties and could expect to get the nod from the selectors. mined to help lead Argentina to their first major international tournament victory for 23 years. Messi, a veteran of Argentina’s agonizing defeats in the 2014 World Cup final and 2015 Copa America final, had arrived in the United States nursing a back injury sustained during a friendly victory against Honduras last month. He was late joining up with the squad after returning to Spain to give evidence in his tax fraud trial. On Thursday he had faced a fresh round of criticism from Argentina great Diego Maradona, who accused Messi of lacking “the personality to be a leader” during remarks to journalists in Paris on the eve of Euro 2016. But 24 hours later, Messi crafted the best possible response on the pitch at Chicago, lighting up the tournament with a hat-trick performance that firmly establishes Argentina as the team to beat.

Aguero’s Manchester City team-mate Nicolas Otamendi had opened the scoring for Argentina in the seventh minute, heading home an Angel Di Maria free-kick from close range. The victory sees Argentina, convincing 2-1 winners over Chile in their opening game, guaranteed a spot in the last eight with one group game remaining. The only blemish on the evening was an injury to Angel Di Maria, who limped off in the first half to extend his miserable record of injuries in major tournaments. The Paris Saint-Germain winger was injured in the 2014 World Cup, missing the final, and was also injured during last year’s Copa America in Chile. Argentina are now firmly on course to top Group D, with only one game against pointless Bolivia to come. Friday’s win marked a dazzling return to the spotlight for Messi, who is deter-

C H I C A G O, J u n 1 1 (Agencies): Lionel Messi scored a magical hat-trick in 19 minutes as Argentina cruised into the Copa America Centenario quarter-finals with a 5-0 rout of Panama on Friday. Messi had been forced to delay his debut in the tournament after a slow recovery from a lower back injury, with Argentina coach Gerardo Martino surprisingly naming him amongst the substitutes once more. But Messi wasted no time in stamping his genius on the tournament after coming on in the 61st minute to replace Augusto Fernandez with Argentina leading the Group D game 1-0. An electrifying cameo from the Barcelona superstar began with his first goal of the tournament on 68 minutes, finishing with aplomb after Gonzalo Higuain’s shot bounced off a Panamanian defender into his path. But there was no question of luck with his second, with Messi curling a wonderful free-kick into the top corner to bring the Soldier Field crowd to its feet in the 78th minute. With Panama’s heads down, Messi then duly completed his quick-fire hat-trick - skipping clear of a marker inside the penalty area to finish emphatically for 4-0. There was still time for Messi to have a hand in Argentina’s fifth goal of the evening, providing a sublime pass in the build-up to Sergio

Wales win in long-awaited Euro debut France beat Romania in opener

Gareth Bale races away in celebration after scoring the opening goal of Wales’ Group B clash with Slovakia. B o r d e au x , J u n 1 1 (Agencies): Wales beat Slovakia 2-1 in Bordeaux on Saturday as both teams took part in their first-ever game in the European Championship finals. Gareth Bale grabbed the opening goal as his superb free kick in the first half set Wales on their way in front of a huge following of Welsh fans in south west France. Slovakia threatened occasionally through Marik Hamsik but substitute Ondrej Duda scored seconds after arriving on the pitch to make it 1-1. Wales then grabbed a late winner through Hal Robson-Kanu as they sit on three points in Group B after their opening game of EURO 2016 and their first game in a major tournament since 1958. The first big chance of the game arrived as Hamsik

won the ball 30-yards out and drove towards the Welsh goal, gliding past four defenders before Ben Davies blocked heroically on the line. In the 11th minute Wales went ahead as Bale sent a dipping free kick into the far corner which bamboozled Slovakian goalkeeper Matus Kozacik to send the Welsh fans wild. 1-0 and it just had to be Bale who scored seven of Wales 11 goals in qualifying and assisted on another two. The rest of the first half played out evenly with Slovakia wanting a penalty for a handball against Ashley Williams, plus Wales wanted two PKs after Martin Skrtel appeared to elbow Jonny Williams in the face and also haul down James Chester in the box. Aaron Ramsey sent in a tame effort on goal but other than that the game turned into

a feisty midfield battle. In the second half Wales started to grab a stranglehold on the game and Bale went close to grabbing his Wales’ second goal but his header was denied by Kozacik. Duda then jumped off the bench and made it 1-1 as Robert Mak’s powerful run saw him pull the pull back to the penalty spot and Duda did the rest. 1-1. Slovakia then pushed for the winner but substitute Robson-Kanu scored nine minutes from time to seal the 2-1 win for Chris Coleman’s side. Nemec’s late header came off the post with rookie goalkeeper Danny Ward beaten but the Welsh held on to secure a huge victory. Next up for Wales is a huge rivalry clash with England on Thursday in Lens, while Slovakia face Russia on Wednesday.

Switzerland down 10 man Albania 1-0

Switzerland got their Euro 2016 campaign off to the perfect start with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Albania in Lens on Saturday. Hoffenheim defender Fabian Schar benefitted from a goalkeeping error from Etrit Berisha to head the Swiss in front on five minutes. Albania, who are appearing at major tournament for the first time, took their time to settle into the game but their cause was hindered by the dismissal of captain Lorik Cana for two bookable offences on 37 minutes.

Paes paired with Bopanna for Olympics New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI): Veteran Leander Paes today got the nod for his seventh Olympic appearance after the All India Tennis Association (AITA) paired him with Rohan Bopanna for the men’s doubles competition despite the latter’s desire to team up with Saketh Myneni. Announcing the squad for the Olympics, beginning August 5, AITA chief Anil Khanna said Bopanna will be pairing up with Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles event as had been demanded by the World No.1 in women’s doubles. Sania will be teaming up with Prarthana Thombare in the women’s doubles event. As was expected, the AITA rejected Bopanna’s request for Myneni as his partner, saying that India’s best chance for a medal at Rio lay in him teaming up with Paes, who won the French Open mixed doubles title earlier this month. “He (Bopanna) has given reasons to selection committee on why he feels Saketh could be a better doubles partner. But he has also made it clear that he wants to represent the nation. It was a well-meaning letter (which Bopanna wrote yesterday to AITA). Leander and Rohan have played four times in Davis Cup, they have a 2-2 record,” Khanna said. “Committee decided that the best bet for Indian tennis to win a medal at the Olympics would be Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna,” he added. Khanna then named Bopanna and Sania as the best medal hopes in the mixed doubles category. “The committee has decided to nominate Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles competition,” he said.

Switzerland failed to exploit their man advantage, though, as Albania remained in the game with a valiant defensive display - and they could have snatched a point at the death had Shkelzen Gashi not been thwarted by the impressive Yann Sommer. But Vladimir Petkovic’s men held on to win an opening European Championship game for the first time, a result which moved them level with hosts France at the top of Group A.

Hosts France needed a stunning late strike from playmaker Dimitri Payet to secure a hard-earned 2-1 win over Romania in the opening match of Euro2016. O l iv i e r G i r o u d p u t France ahead in the 58th minute only for Romania to equalise through Bogdan Stancu’s penalty seven minutes later. The match was destined to a draw till Payet scored with a superb long range shot in the 90th. France and Romania were locked 0-0 at halftime at the Stade de France. French striker Antoine Griezmann had the best chance of the first 45 minutes when he hit the post with a header. The Atletico Madrid star hit the woodwork in the 14th minute in their Group A match. Full back Bacary Sagna curled in an inviting cross from the right flank that deflected off Romania defender Vlad Chiriches into the path of Griezmann. Griezmann missed to provide the finishing touches to the cross in his first attempt and then saw his header from close crash onto the post. Griezmann had another good opportunity from Payet’s cutback pass but his effort went wide. France were more threatening, with Griezmann’s strike partner Olivier Giroud directing two headers wide. France made the breakthrough when Giroud rose highest to meet Payet’s cross helped by a big misjudgement from the Romanian goalkeeper who came off the line and missed the flight of the ball. France were primed to build on during the closing stages but the hosts gave away a penalty after Patrice Evra clattered into Nicolae Stanciu. Stancu kept his cool and sent Lloris the wrong way to draw the Romanians level with 25 minutes left on the clock. France seemed to have been held to a frustrating draw until Payet curled home a superb effort to shape the outcome. Saina to face Sun Yu in Australian Open final

Sydney, Jun 11 (IANS): London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal stormed into the final of the $750,000 Australian Open Superseries badminton tournament here on Saturday, beating World No.2 Wang Yihan of China 21-8, 2112 in a semi-final. World No.8 Saina dominated the proceedings from the start and lost little sweat to beat Yihan in straight games in the women’s singles at the Sydney Olympic Park to enter her maiden final of the season. Saina, who had clinched the Australian Open title two years ago, took a 7-1 lead before extending it 11-2 at the interval mark in the opening game. Returning from the break, the 26-year-old continued her rampaging form with a combination down-the-line and cross court hits as well as some fine body shots, to take the game 21-8 away from her Chinese opponent. The second game was no different as Saina took a 6-3 lead before making it 11-4 at the

interval. After the break, it was Saina all the way as the Chinese shuttler found the going difficult to lose the game and the match 12-21. She will face China’s Sun Yu in the final on Sunday. Earlier, it was heartbreak for World No. 13 Kidambi Srikanth, who crashed out of the tournament after going down 20-22, 13-21 to Hans-Kristian Vittinghu of Denmark in a men’s singles semi-final. The 23-year-old Srikanth, who had a 2-1 head-to-head record against the World No.12 Dane prior to the match, gave a tough fight in the first game to reach 20-20, which was anybody’s game. However, Vittinghus won the crucial point and sealed the game. In the second game, the Guntur-born shuttler kept the pressure but lost momentum at crucial times to fall behind. In the end, the pressure was too much to handle and Srikanth lost the game to bow out of his second semi-final of 2016.

Murray leads GB’s Rio team London, Jun 11 (Agencies): Reigning Olympic champion Andy Murray will spearhead Great Britain’s challenge at Rio 2016 after being named alongside his brother Jamie in a four-player squad. Murray, who won gold at London 2012 after beating Roger Federer in the men’s singles final, will play singles, doubles with Jamie and mixed doubles with his likely partner being world No 18 Johanna Konta. Heather Watson, who played in the women’s singles four years ago, has also been selected in the GB team. Murray, beaten in the French Open final last weekend by Novak Djokovic, led Britain to the Davis Cup title in

November and has targeted the Olympics as one of his goals this year. “There is invaluable Olympic experience in this squad with both Andy and Jamie selected for their third, and Heather for her second successive Olympic Games,” said Mark England, chef de mission for the British Olympic team. Murray, who claimed his first Grand Slam title at the US Open shortly after winning gold in London, is ranked No 2 in the ATP rankings, the same as brother Jamie in doubles. “Playing for Britain during London 2012 gave me some of the best memories I have in sport,” Murray, 29, said. “I can’t wait to get to Rio to try and win more medals.”
