IMPHAL, JUN 8: Taking strong exception to “highhandedness and brutality exhibited by the Delhi police and Manipur Rifles personnel posted at Manipur Bhawan, New Delhi”, the Joint Action Committee Against Anti-Tribal Bills (JAC), Churachandpur Wednesday called a 24-hour total shutdown call in “tribal areas” of Manipur. The total shutdown, which comes up ahead of its proposed 10-day economic blockade, would begin Wednesday midnight, state a press release of anti-ILPS bills. JAC had already announced a 10-day economic blockade on the national highways, which would commence June 9 midnight besides imposing a ban on the implementation of ongoing national projects in tribal areas of the state. The decision to impose the shutdown was taken at an emergency meeting with the Outer Manipur Tribals’ Forum (OMTF), an apex body of the Hmar Inpui, Mizo People Convention, Thadou Inpi, United Naga Council and Zomi Council Wednesday morning, the release stated. While requesting all tribal people of Manipur to observe the shutdown to show their solidarity and support for
the tribal brothers and sisters in Delhi, the JAC said with these new developments, the daily sit-in protest at Salphate Pumbuk, Hiangtam Lamka that was earlier slated to begin on June 9 has been re-scheduled for a later date. Medical services and emergencies, airport pickup and drop, electricity department (including prepaid recharge outlets), telecom service, water supply, ongoing school/ college exams, pre-planned conferences/seminars and weddings have been exempted from the preview of the stir. Meanwhile, JAC has called upon tribals of Manipur, both at home and elsewhere, to start preparing for any eventuality.

Cancel all backdoor appointments: NPRAAF
DIMAPUR thursday, june 9, 2016
DIMAPUR, JUN 8 (NPN): Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) while lauding the state government’s move by banning all ad-hoc/casual/ temporary/work-charged appointments, at the same time appealed to the government to evolve with measures to cleanse all backdoor appointments. NPRAAF urged the government “to take a bold step” to cancel all backdoor appointments and to let justice be made available to all bonafide citizens. In a press note, NPRAAF information & publicity cell said that the Office Memorandum (OM) banning contractual appointments aims to serve only as a prevention/vaccination against outbreak of further destructive disease of backdoor appointments. It does not, in any manner, cure the disease which has already afflicted the society very deeply, NPRAAF stated. “Even if the ban on contractual appointments is to be 100% successful, yet if all sorts and classes of existing backdoor appointments in the government are not rooted out thoroughly, the disease of corruption shall remain entrenched”, NPRAAF said. Meanwhile, NPRAAF has also extended its support and cooperation to Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organization in the fight for the rights of the consumers and against backdoor appointments.
to the injured protesters. In a press release, Naga Hoho secretary administration Chitho Nyusou claimed that Manipur Tribals’ Forum, Delhi (MTFD) were gathered outside Manipur Bhavan to register their resentment against the “infamous three anti-tribal bills, and the so called ‘All Manipur political party’ delegates.” Naga Hoho stated that the tribal political party NPF was not part of the delegation or even part of the discussion about the delegation. Therefore, the hoho said the “so called All Political Party was a farcical representation yet again” led by Manipur chief minister Ibobi Singh. It stated that the act of the Manipur Rifles manning the gate and throwing stones upon the peaceful protesters from the Manipur Bhavans terrace led to the chaotic situation. The Hoho further stated that the brutality displayed by both the Delhi Police and Manipur Rifles, causing serious injuries, assaulting and even to the “extent of molesting two women protesters” said it all. NH said peaceful protesters being “thrashed, kicked and trampled upon” even inside the PCR van explained how the use of excessive force, assault, torture and terrorising upon the hill people of Manipur was “disgustedly executed.”

NEW DELHI/DHAKA, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Islamic State (IS), the world’s deadliest terror group, is reported to have tried hard but failed to make its presence felt in India. And now, the IS is reported to have changed its tactics and is believed to be co-ordinating with regional terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) to carry out attacks in India. The Deccan Chronicle reported on Wednesday about an alert issued by the Intelligence Bureau. The alert states: “ISIS is desperate to make its presence felt in India and for this purpose is trying to co-ordinate with LeT to outsource some of its operations.” The alert further says the IS would plan and supervise the entire operation while it would be executed by the LeT, which already has a presence in India. A lone wolf attack on a high profile target is also a real possibility under the plan, intelligence agencies believe. “Such a high-profile attack will help ISIS mark its presence in the country as it would claim responsibility for it and, in the process, attract youth into joining its cadre,” the alert states. The alert comes just days after a video emerged in which IS recruits from India were seen issuing a threat to carry out attacks here.
B’desh clampdown on terror
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today promised to intensify a nationwide antiterror clampdown, a day after a Hindu priest was hacked to death by IS jihadists in Bangladesh which has seen a series of brutal attacks by Islamists on minorities and secular activists. “If they (militants) think they could turn Bangladesh upside down, they are wrong . . . they will be exposed to justice in the soil of Bangladesh and their patrons will also not be spared,” Hasina said in the parliament. She said the security forces would continue to track down the militants anywhere in the country and they would be exposed to justice even if it takes years or decades. Hasina comments came after three operatives of the outlawed Jamaat ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were killed in two predawn security raids early yesterday in Dhaka and north-western Rajshahi while another member of the outfit was killed overnight at Shibganj sub-district in north west Bogra. “We raided the village in Shibganj after midnight yesterday on a secret tip . . . they (JMB men) opened fire and hurled bombs sensing our presence at the scene forcing us to retaliate when Jausar (slain militant) was killed,” said a police officer in Bogra.

Solo advised them that their goal should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and testable. NBSE chairman Asano Sekhose, in her welcome address, said the beauty of competition was that there was no limit to the dreams and aspirations as long as they continued

printed handbook’ organized by Directorate of school education at Ura academy, Wednesday, Yitachu asserted that it was not right to occupy two or three posts depriving thousands of unemployed youths. Stating that the department had been detecting and taking corrective measures against such cases, he however, said it was time to crack the whip by setting a deadline and to let law take its own course. He noted that many schools do not have physical
education (PE) teachers, while on the other hand there were schools with two/three PE teachers. For this, he said PE teachers wanting to be posted or transferred against any such vacancy could be considered by sending in their application to the department. If not, he said that the department would be compelled to ensure that every school have PE teachers. Yitachu also emphasised that four sections-- PE, Hindi, planning and language should be looked after by one officer in the rank of an additional director. He also advised the PE teachers to focus in their sports discipline and guide the students in such areas, stating that the government’s policy encourages every school to take up one discipline in sports. Lamenting that the unresolved issue of cadre and structure review has affected the functioning of the department, Yitachu appealed to all stakeholder and associations to allow the department to go ahead with what it thinks was best for the department. In an oblique reference, he pointed out that there were
some cases in the department where some individuals, who were not even employed, had been drawing pension. He urged the gathered teachers, during the course of the training cum-conference, to share their ideas and give recommendations to the department. Yitachu later released the department’s ‘handbook for physical education teachers and students of Nagaland’. Exhorting the gathering, additional director, Pollem Tep appraised that education being multi disciplinary in nature, should not be confined only to classroom. While urging PE teachers to be innovative, he said that the subject was important to supplement other learning processes. The gathering was enthralled through special song by students of GHSS Seikhazou. Welcome address was delivered by deputy director (PE), T. Lipok Jamir, while vote of thanks was proposed by Venolie Medom. The programme was chaired by ANPETA president, Vitsolie Keyho and invocation by Mesehol.

India increasing security along Myanmar border NAY PI TAW, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): India’s Home Ministry official and joint secretary in charge of the Northeast, Satyendra Garg, said Delhi was alarmed by the recent ambush of Assam Rifles soldiers. “We have to increase security in the unfenced border region because separatist rebels are freely moving back and forth and attacking our forces,” Garg told Mizzima during a recent visit to Tripura. “Northeast India’s seven states have international borders and Myanmar is the most sensitive border at this moment. The court verdict was announced today, it said, adding that the same court at Guwahati further announced 10 to 7 years imprisonment to 17 other arrested members of the outlaw organization. The then sixty-five-year Rajkumar Meghen, head of India’s oldest and the richest insurgent group operative of
Manipur was declared arrested by the Indian security force from Bihar’s Motihari district in December 2010. His arrest was come up months after the reports of his missing from Bangladesh on September 27, 2010 which the UNLF had confirmed in a statement and widespread protest of the people in Manipur demanding from the Union government to reveal the whereabouts of the UNLF chief. Meghen was allegedly arrested by a combined team of Indian intelligence agencies and its Bangladesh counterpart near Dhaka, as claimed by the UNLF. Assam refinery sends first Small hydropower projects to be promoted consignment of paraffin wax
Guwahati, Jun 8 (IANS): Assam’s Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has sent its first consignment of Type-II paraffin wax to the Rok Industries in Kenya from its marketing terminal in Golaghat, the refinery said on Wednesday. The 60-tonne consignment was flagged off by the refinery’s Technical Director S.R. Medhi on Tuesday evening. The NRL’s wax plant was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February this year at a public function in Dibrugarh town. The 50,000-tonne a year wax plant was commissioned in March last year at a cost of Rs 676 crore. The country’s largest wax producing unit has indigenous technology developed by the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) Dehradun, Engineers India Ltd (EIL) and NRL. Since its wax plant was commissioned, the NRL has emerged as the largest manufacturer and marketer of wax in
the country with a market share of more than 52 per cent. Leveraging on the inherent properties of wax-rich crude oil from Assam’s oil fields, the plant is designed to produce superior quality paraffin and micro-crystalline wax. It is a worthy manifestation of the “Make in India” campaign of the central government. Till now, a major part of the country’s annual demand for paraffin wax along with the entire demand for micro-crystalline wax was being met through imports. NRL’s wax plant has minimised the supply deficit in the domestic market substantially, thus reducing imports. Paraffin wax is used in making candles, tarpaulin sheets, food grade wrappers and in PVC pipe manufacturing industries while micro-crystalline Wax finds widespread application in the manufacture of tyres, rubber products, paints and polishes, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Simultaneously, to enable the common man in northeast India explore new ideas and find solutions for everyday problems specific to the region, each of the states will get an Innovation Hub. “By March 2017 we are supposed to complete 50 innovation hubs at a total cost of Rs 100 crore. We have opened 12 hubs and 15 are in the making. So, we have a huge task of setting up more, and basically, we are looking at the northeast for that,” informed Manekar. Acknowledging there is a potential in the northeast as in other parts of the country for people to make use of these hubs, Manekar said that
the resources available to the people in northeast is “somehow not enough.” “Therefore, our aim is to provide them resources and provide them basic ideas so that they can further develop their ideas and come up with solutions to solve their daily problems. The problems faced by people in the northeast are different from those living in other parts of the country and the people themselves can solve them,” he added. “It’s a facility for the students and common man to explore their ideas. If a person feels some work can be done in a better way or we can save some labour, time or money, then there is a chance for them to try out the ideas,” Manekar said. This apart, on the anvil is a large Science City in Guwahati at a cost of Rs110 crore, a planetarium in Gangtok in Sikkim, and there is a request from Mizoram for an evolution park, the official said.

Mr. Bidyasing Rongpi has opined that to keep the Training Centre operational the KAAC and the KLA must collaborate.

the party leaders and left the state today. “The dissidents led by Sudip Burman were trying to destabilise the party. Earlier, they tried to join BJP but the party refused to take them and then they joined TMC. Now we are free from infighting and the party would gain more strength to work for people,” he told reporters. Bora accepted that there was infighting in Congress and said it was a “temporary setback” but now the party will be more united as infighting will stop with the exit of the dissident MLAs. “We came to know since
one year back that Sudip Roy Barman did not want to work in Congress. He wanted to lead the Congress according to his own style which is not acceptable to the party. So, I think people are more happy that Congress in Tripura is united now and there will be no infighting,” he said. Congress leaders like Gegong Apang and P A Sangma had also left Congress and joined other parties but could not continue for long, Bora said adding, the party was not dependent on any single person and hence it will be able to regain its strength before the next Assembly election.

Modi for deeper US-India security relationship Allow free flow of academic ideas: Prez
tionship, both nations stand to gain in great measure,” he said. Modi’s address followed years of being shunned in the US because of religious violence in his home state. Underscoring the turnabout, it came a day after a White House meeting with President Barack Obama and preceded a lunch Modi will have in the Capitol with congressional leaders and a reception hosted by the House and Senate foreign affairs committees. “Today, our relationship has overcome the hesitations of history,” he said. “Comfort, candour and convergence define our conversations.”
Modi drew laughter from the lawmakers crowding the House chamber for the joint meeting of Congress with a tongue-in-cheek description of the rough and tumble politics of the US. “I am informed that the working of the US Congress is harmonious. I am also told that you are wellknown for your bipartisanship,” he said. “Well, you are not alone.” When Modi evoked USIndia cooperation on climate change, Democrats rose in applause, but most Republicans stayed seated. He also emphasized the common cultural ties between the two nations. Modi cited estimates that
Govt sends back Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation
Veteran journalist K.K. Katyal passes away
Washington, Jun 8 (Agencies): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Congress on Wednesday that his nation and the US have overcome “the hesitations of history” and called for ever-stronger economic and defense ties between the two countries. “Let us work together to convert shared ideals into practical cooperation,” Modi said in a speech that lauded both nations’ common democratic principles and hailed two heroes of nonviolence, India’s Mahatma Gandhi and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. “In advancing this rela-
NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): Deviating from an established practice, the government has returned twice to the Supreme Court collegium a recommendation made by it. The collegium headed by Chief Justice of India T S Thakur has stood by its recommendation to appoint an additional judge to the Patna High Court, overruling the government’s objections on both the occasion. Highly-placed sources in the government said today that in November, 2013 the collegium had recommended appointing a member of the state judicial services as additional judge to the Patna High Court. But the government had then returned the file to the collegium requesting it to “reconsider” the decision. The government’s move was based on an Intelligence Bureau report. In between, as the file was pending with the government, the National
Judicial Appointments Commission Act was notified on April 13, 2015. But when the new law which sought to overturn the collegium system was struck down by the Supreme Court on October 16 last, the old system of appointing judges to the apex court and the 24 high courts made a comeback. After the return of the collegium system, the Law Ministry decided to look into the past recommendations made by the collegium. It was then decided to return the file of the collegium recommendation back to the CJI in March, 2016, requesting it to once again reconsider its decision. But the collegium once again reiterated its recommendation in April. Under the present scheme of things, if the collegium reiterates its recommendation, the government has to make the appointment.
New Delhi, Jun 8 (Agencies): The Hindu’s former Delhi Chief of Bureau and veteran journalist K.K. Katyal passed away in a Delhi hospital on Wednesday after a brief illness. Mr. Katyal was 88. Katyal, who was the face of The Hindu’s Delhi bureau since the launch of the paper’s New Delhi edition in 1986, had also worked in The Statesman and Hindustan Times. Hailing from Jhang in Pakistan, he had wide contacts across political and diplomatic circles. Katyal was widely travelled and had a wide array of interests. A familiar byline to The Hindu’s readers, the veteran scribe worked towards improving relations with Pakistan. After his retirement from The Hindu in 2004, Katyal was associated with the South Asia Free Media Association as president of its India chapter.
nuclear agreement between the US and India that was reached in 2008. The two governments said that US-based Westinghouse Electric Co is preparing to build six nuclear reactors in India, but it has yet to finalize a contract. Though the two countries’ ties are growing stronger, there’s also a sense in Congress that the relationship has yet to deliver on its promise and some lawmakers have criticized the Modi government’s record on religious tolerance and combating human trafficking and slavery. Modi is the fifth Indian leader to make a speech to Congress since 1985. The last was by his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, in 2005. Coincidentally, it was that year that Modi was denied a visa to visit the US over suspicions about his possible role in religious riots that killed more than 1,000 Muslims in the western state of Gujarat, where he was then the top official. American officials largely avoided contact with Modi until he became prime minister in the 2014. Since then, he has visited the US four times. His tenure has seen an improvement in the bilateral relationship, particularly in defense. While India resists the notion of becoming a US ally, the two militaries conduct more drills with each other than with any other nation. They share concern over China’s rise and over freedom of navigation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Beijing, Jun 8 (PTI): India cannot rise by “containing” China or picking one side against the other, a Chinese state-run paper said on Wednesday, taking note of the Indo-US ties which are being ramped up to an “unprecedented level”. “Four visits to the US and seven meetings with President Barack Obama in two years - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ramped up the India-US relationship to an unprecedented level. How the two countries will engage with each other has raised heated discussions,” an op-ed article in state-run Global Times said. “Picking one side or camp against the other is not the way India will rise. New Delhi is looking into a multi-faceted diplomacy. The well-performing Indian economy will give incentives to the country to be more confident with multilateralism and to seek balanced international relations. “Although rivalling China in many aspects, India knows
its great vision cannot be realised by bashing or containing China. Instead, they should expand cooperation, explore the potentials and build mutual trust for their own good. China is more of a help than a competitor for India. This will eventually constitute India’s fundamental understanding of China,” it said referring to Modi’s current visit to the US.With Modi’s visit, New Delhi hopes there will be breakthroughs in many aspects, especially business and trade, security cooperation and nuclear issues, the article titled ‘India’s vision cannot be realised by containing China’ said. “The transformation of the geopolitical landscape is the major driver drawing the US and India much closer. Washington’s rebalance to the Asia-Pacific makes the US realise India’s strategic significance, economic potential and ideological commonality,” it said. “India hopes that by consolidating its relationship
Awaas Yojana’, this is the second scheme to be renamed. “We have immense respect for Mahatma Phule. But, the BJP government has taken this decision to create controversy and disruptions. The government has stooped very low as far as standards of morality are concerned,” he alleged. Chavan further said the Opposition parties would not have objected if a new scheme was given name of the government’s choice, but “renaming old scheme reeks of a political conspiracy”.

The Sena also took another swipe at Modi wondering who could be blamed if people are talking about corruption two years after the new government came to power. “Whom do we blame for it? Can we attribute what is happening in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to the Gandhi family?” the editorial asked. “Since Modi is the face of the nation, other countries might believe what he speaks and take decisions based on that which might affect the financial condition of India. Jibes at opposition should be taken within the country itself. One does not need to go to America or Europe to take potshots at Modi or the Gandhi family,” it added. The Sena said levelling corruption charges against Robert Vadra and Gandhi family was enough and it is now time to take action against them if they have indulged in wrongdoings.
with the US, it could gain leverage in development and forge an international status that is worthy of its potential. Modi has riveted his interactions with the US on this simple outlook to make India a veritable powerhouse. He was eager to boost a broader and better economic relationship with the US. “He urged the signing of the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement, a landmark deal promoting logistics and defence cooperation with the US and he also expects an endorsement from the US to help India become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the last step to solidify India’s status as a nuclear powerhouse,” the article said. As for Washington, it is always hoping that India could serve as its right hand to counterbalance China’s rise. But so far, Washington’s calculations do not work well. Don’t malign India from abroad: Sena to Modi on graft remarks
MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI): Key BJP ally Shiv Sena today chided Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent remarks on corruption in India and asked him to refrain from “maligning” the country from foreign soil. Taunting Modi in yet another attack on the prime minister, the Sena also questioned if scams in BJP-ruled states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat can be attributed to the Gandhi family. Vowing to root out corruption in India, the prime minister had on Sunday said in Doha on the second leg of his five-nation visit that he “faced problems” by depriving many people of their “sweets” and saved over Rs 36,000 crore annually by stopping leakage and theft in government schemes. “The Prime Minister garnered applause for speaking on how corrupt India is. This is like maligning the reputation of the country on foreign soil,” the editorial said.
after he took over the office of the first citizen of the country in 2012. Mukherjee said he would be “frank” to admit that he learnt a number of things after taking over the President’s office and being a ‘visitor’ to a number of higher learning institutions of the country by virtue of the post he held. The President added Indian talent was getting “wasted” as brilliant minds from premier institutions like IITs were working for global concerns and not here. “This talent must be better utilised than promoting products of big MNCs (Multi-National Companies),” he said, adding that massive investments have to be made in research and development activities in order to make a “knowledge society”. The President said India was “losing” every year about 2,000 students who go abroad. Mukherjee said he had been “repeating like a parrot” about his deep concerns over the lack of quality education in our institutes of higher

Scheme rename: Cong accuses BJP of disrespecting Rajiv Gandhi
MUMBAI, JUN 8 (PTI): A day after the Maharashtra government renamed the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Arogya Yojana’ (RGJAY) as ‘Mahatma Phule Jana Arogya Yojana’ (MPJAY), the Congress today accused BJP of “disrespecting” a former prime minister who “gave up his life for the nation”. “We had started this scheme to provide health benefits to crores of poor people. But, after the new government came to power, we had been hearing that it wants to change the name of this scheme. The

The President candidly admitted that he had immensely benefited from inputs he got from these institutions and that has “enriched my life and expanded the horizon of my knowledge.” “I am deeply grateful to them (institutions of higher learning) that at least at the fag end also, I got the right type of lessons from my gurus,” he said. Mukherjee said he wonders how “no Indian University got a Nobel prize for research in original.” Giving examples, he said Sir C V Raman was the first and last in this domain and others like Amartya Sen, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Har Gobind Khorana got the award while working in foreign universities. Talking about the steps he had taken in this regard, Mukher jee mentioned he made it a point to take along with him Vice Chancellors of various varsities in his foreign tours in order to give respect and due recognition to the faculty of higher learning. “If we cannot improve our educational qualities, educational standards in the basic areas like research and innovation then how will we occupy our rightful place in the high table of the comity of nations?,” he asked, adding that there was surely “no lack of talent” amongst the students and teachers in the country.

“more Americans bend for yoga than to throw a curve ball.” And he described the achievements of Indian-Americans, saying they are among the US’ best business executives, scientists, “even spelling bee champions.” When Modi applauded the sacrifices of soldiers from “the land of the free and the home of the brave” in the service of liberty, he clapped his hands above his head, prompting a standing ovation. Modi said his nation’s 1.25 billion people made India an “ideal partner” for US businesses. He said his goals include strengthening his country’s rural economy, bringing electricity to all of the country’s households and improving transportation systems, all achieved “with a light carbon footprint.” Citing the rising threat from the Islamic State and other extremist groups, he said, “We have both lost civilians and soldiers in combatting it. The need of the hour is for us to deepen our security cooperation.” At his meeting with Obama, the two leaders consolidated strong bilateral ties but fell short of major outcomes. India, the world’s thirdlargest carbon emitter among nations, said it would strive to formally join a global climate deal this year — as the US and China have said they will do — but it gave no ironclad commitment. NEW DELHI, JUN 8 (PTI): Putting his weight behind “academic freedom”, President Pranab Mukherjee today said windows for free flow of thoughts should not be shut and an atmosphere should be created where “cross-fertilisation” of ideas can take place. Highlighting the need for improving the status of higher education in the country, the President said more emphasis should be laid on “innovation and research” and teachers and academicians should be given their due recognition. While receiving the first copy of a book titled ‘The Education President’ from Vice President Hamid Ansari, Mukherjee said continuous flow of funds and recognition by various authorities and favourable interventions by them are required to achieve better results in this regard. “We should be providing academic freedom....creating an atmosphere for crossfertilisation of ideas from different parts...come and flow uninterruptedly. “You can hold on your ground, no harm, but don’t shut the windows as Gandhiji said ‘I refuse to be blown off but I will not think of shutting the windows, let the free flow of window blow across my room so that I can enrich myself ’,” he said after receiving the book. f there is one glaring and major fault with the government which symbolises its weakness of not implementing numerous Acts and rules or recommendations as it promised to do or expected to do; this failing has serious consequences on the overall scenario. That government which governs the least is best. However it can also mean that a government which does not govern at all is best. If the latter is to be true then paradoxically, Nagaland best fits the bill. However, the crisis in Nagaland is due to lack of good governance and a dilemma for thinkers who seriously believe that people and their government share a common responsibility. There are many directives, notifications and orders passed by the state government during the past which are essentially meant to enforce the rule of law in order to prevent any corruption or irregularity. Any decision that is to be implemented is all about rule of law, which essentially guarantees equality of all individuals in society on the basis of the principle that every person is equal before the law. In societies where the rule of law is exercised, people have the opportunity to seek equal protection whenever any rights violations occur. If equal protection for all citizens under the law is ignored, the transparency, accountability and good governance which underpin individual and societal development become infructuous. A government should carry out its obligations to the hilt and wavering would only weaken democracy. Democracy has been hailed as the true and authentic voice of people, working for both their tangible and intangible interests. In a meaningful democracy, political stability and working within the conventional framework of law and ethics are the two most desired virtues. People across continents have long cherished the dream of living under healthy governance, which has led to their reaffirming the mandate for constitutionally approved governments irrespective of their efficiency levels or experience. Sometimes there is a limit to all that people can brook. Their faith in their government system is hammered each time, the government does precious little in upholding or enforcing any act to respond to a relevant situation. The state government has consistently failed to make public, the inquiry commissions into the Meluri in July and earlier, the March 5 Dimapur mob violence last year. In addition, the government has yet to make public the report and recommendation of High Powered Committee (HPC) report headed by Justice (retd) H.K.Sema submitted to the chief minister in July last year. When the government fails to act on its own orders or does not enforce the acts and rules it passed; it creates a suppressive situation where those who misuse power are able to get away with anything but at huge consequences. The present situation is characterised by a pervasive disenchantment with the way things have worked out. It is futile to debate whether it is the institutions provided by the Constitution that have failed or whether the men who work these institutions have failed. The tyranny of the Status Quo has gravely weakened forces of change. It is lack of conviction among the authorities that cause people to feel totally dejected and discourage them from being obedient to authority and actively participate in governance.
DailyDevotion What’s Next To Do? If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. —John 13:17 Be determined to know more than others. If you yourself do not cut the lines that tie you to the dock, God will have to use a storm to sever them and to send you out to sea. Put everything in your life afloat upon God, going out to sea on the great swelling tide of His purpose, and your eyes will be opened. If you believe in Jesus, you are not to spend all your time in the calm waters just inside the harbor, full of joy, but always tied to the dock. You have to get out past the harbor into the great depths of God, and begin to know things for yourself— begin to have spiritual discernment. When you know that you should do something and you do it, immediately you know more. Examine where you have become sluggish, where you began losing interest spiritually, and you will find that it goes back to a point where you did not do something you knew you should do. You did not do it because there seemed to be no immediate call to do it. But now you have no insight or discernment, and at a time of crisis you are spiritually distracted instead of spiritually self-controlled. It is a dangerous thing to refuse to continue learning and knowing more. The counterfeit of obedience is a state of mind in which you create your own opportunities to sacrifice yourself, and your zeal and enthusiasm are mistaken for discernment. It is easier to sacrifice yourself than to fulfill your spiritual destiny, which is stated in Romans 12:1-2. It is much better to fulfill the purpose of God in your life by discerning His will than it is to perform great acts of self-sacrifice. “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” (1 Samuel 15:22). Beware of paying attention or going back to what you once were, when God wants you to be something that you have never been. “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know…” (John 7:17).

f I were to award marks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his twoyear governance, I would give him four out of 10. I wouldn’t fail him because he did not officially pursue the Hindutva programme and yet allowed the RSS and Bajrang Dal, both extremist organisations, to have the run of the field. I know that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was allowed to use Akashvani to purvey his parochial and extremist views. In the same manner other government-owned institutions, such as the Nehru Library, were asked to follow the words coming from the RSS headquarters at Nagpur, or Jhandewalan in New Delhi. Heads of different educational institutes with Nehruvian leanings were dismissed. The process is not yet complete. Even the central institutions in the Congress-run states are being systematically saffronised. Modi doesn’t have to give day-to-day instructions. The message has reached that the entire set-up will have to—willy-nilly—follow
Two years of Modi government the Hindutva line of thinking, no matter how ante deluvian. Take the case of murder at Dadri, only 50 kilometres from Delhi. One Muslim was killed by fanatics simply because his family was suspected to have eaten beef. The extremists were not content with the killing of one person but wanted action against the whole family. They did not even raise their voice in protest. What kind of message must this have sent to the world about a nation which is capable of sending a man to the moon, when it is steeped in the antedeluvian ideas that consider beef-eating as a sin? What saddens one is the silence of those who claim to be secularists. Will these same chestbeating secularists also remain silent if Modi tomorrow permits his foreign minister to break ties with Japan because the Japanese are famous for producing their famous Kobe beef, which is considered one of the world’s greatest delicacies? According to us, gowth meant unrestrained, unwarranted resource consumption and consequent waste generation. More said, researched and done about waste recycling the more careless or clueless we become of the amount and kind of waste we generate. Coalitions against plastic pollution is on the rise but we will be freed from the sobering reality of plastic garbage only when our country stops producing plastic with immediate effect. Who can imagine ways of dismantling the staggering amount of e-waste generated across the world! TVs, cell phones and computers have become a de rigueur for everyone. Satisfaction of material needs is a prerequisite of the satisfaction of living needs. The emerging new models and advanced versions always make people believe that they are desperately in need of them, hence the disposals and wastes. Whatever, we want everything to be in style, not outdated. Furniture, cothes, dishes, appliances and automobiles can all be made to last longer at an additional cost, but neither the maker nor the buyer is interested in this. Who wants a guarantee that their tea cup or carpet will be good to his/ her dying day! Advertisements also make us believe that more varied our needs become, the higher our perfection and thus we belong to an advanced society. All these because man is the object and subject of economic phenomena and movement of money revolves around and through man’s interests, desires and intentions, behavior and decisions. More
Waste generation
than recycling or finding places to dump wastes, people should be provided with better options. Wise choices that regenerate nil waste must be persuaded, induced or coerced at an early age if at the societal level, the models and norms of a clean nation aren’t established and supervised by the government. If ‘stop using plastic’ doesn’t work magic then ‘stop producing plastic’ may work wonders. Downcycle or recylce , plastic is forever. The path for a clean India emerges from homes. Every child must be educated for independent participation in making waste-free choices not theoretically but practically. Human beings act under the influence of certain factors, certain motives, which must be taken into account by governments, in order to organise people for tackling this problem of waste generation. Let the future generation learn that our lives should not be intermeshed with acts of consumption and gain a fake feeling of significance in life from acts of consumption rather than from personal worth and service to others. In speaking about the needs of the society, one must not forget for a moment that no matter what the components of a society are, no matter in what way a problem manifests itself, in the last analysis it does so through people. And any problem, any remedy is made up of an individual’s action. All planned developments struggle with the problem of achieving a reconciliation and harmony between the different ecologic and ethical optima. Greater number of activists, politicians and businessman are beginning to realise that development with it’s greed and speed fails to promote the life of society in it’s real terms. Bulk, retail or small generators, construction and demolition
waste in India aren’t recycled or disposed as they should be. Tonnes and tonnes of waste being dumped elsewhere in a place which also is very much a part of our ecosystem should be our concern and it’s becoming a grave one in recent times after instances of fire in landfills. Hyper thyroid economy that constantly stimulates the people and leaders to be more prodgal with a country’s resources would mean a never ending generation of junk. Yes, our wastefulness is promoted by country’s industries in order to sell it’s ever- mounting stockpiles of products. Think of inviting packagings that induce us to buy stuff. Packages, cans and wraps we just throw away. Never go shopping empty handed. Carry your containers, oil jars, egg holders and lot more. Packaging and disposing isn’t a free dividend to any consumer. I’ve known of certain packagings that costs ten times as much as the products inside. Don’t we all know salt, pepper, nuts or sugar coming in throw away fancy containers cost many times than when they are purchased otherwise? How exhilarating to know that wise minds think alike! That a buddy of mine named HSMF who opts for high end clothing brands takes home stuff from the shops in his own cloth bag minus the wrapping and packaging. And also deliberating on taking his own boxes in case he decides to bring home food from a restaurant to avoid adding on to the heap of eco disposable containers. Yeah let’s ‘ Have Some Mature Forethought’ when we decide about more investment, greater automation, higher productivity, uncontrollable consumerism and unnecessary wastage. Not only policy makers,
activists and businessmen but a wife, a husband, a teacher, a painter, a poet can make a difference on what they choose to buy, use and how. There are spouses of mega stores and supermarkets, young and right thinking engineers who work for automobile companies, just home makers who own a few shares of stock in conglomerate firms who feel so disturbed about the wastefulness they see but do nothing about it as they have a vested interest in perpetuation of wastes. Aren’t we tired of numbing our senses to the fact, ‘We can’t run a linear system on a finite planet’? As a result we have become too horrified ourselves at this burden called dumping yards and landfills on fire. All this indicates, I think, that our tasks of reducing waste generation to achieve an environment conducive to self -respect, individual welfare and fulfillment is tough. While a handful strive hard to hold on to their judicious attitude towards the choices they make, the values they receivable from what they possess in terms of material wealth just to workout some tangible solutions, I wonder if Monarchs and birds will migrate, will streams and rivers flow, will beach sands be playable, will wild flowers beckon butterflies, will throwaway mood give way to a ‘built-in conscience’, will we heal the world? These are a few desperately pertinent questions. Our responsibility doesn’t end the moment we trash stuff into the bin, seas, rivers, vacant plots, groves and underground. Our responsibility lies elsewhere too, in what we decide to trash because certain things do not disappear into thin air. Shall we remember the maxim, “Waste not, want not’ Dr. Elsa Lycias Joel, Chennai
Appreciation to former Sema Naga army officers of General Maken
I
was a deeply moved to discover that in the condolence section of the Nagaland Post of June 8, 2016, all the names of the officers who expressed their admiration and condolences to late general Maken and his family were Sema names. I humbly wish to express that their gesture is a very beautiful gesture in the present ongoing struggle of our nation. As a researcher and writer of our struggle, I have come across many stories where one soldier from one particular tribe sacrificed his live for all his other comrades by giving covering fire so that his friends could escape from enemy ambushes. There were also many instances where a soldier from one particular tribe risked his own life to save his officer from another tribe. Many surviving of-
ficers of today (Including Uncle Isak Swu) are still alive because of such heroic actions of their former soldiers who were from other tribes. But sadly today, because of the divisions and the factions that have splintered us, we find this officer from this tribe condemning that officer from that other tribe and so on and so forth… It is indeed very sad to find that instead of becoming a vibrant nation appreciating and caring for one another, we are instead crawling back into our old tribal cocoons where we find only faults and mistakes in others. If we continue in this dreadful metamorphosis, far from becoming a nation, we will soon instead become enemies of one another in a not very distant future. For God’s sake, as well
as for our own sake; but most of all-in respect to all our fallen heroes- let us acknowledge one another’s sacrifices and move towards reconciliation and unity. That alone, I believe, is the way forward. The other way is a way, that will lead us to self destruction. Thank you former Sema officers of general Maken Ao for your wonderful gesture of camaraderie.Your gesture was like a ray of light in an otherwise dark tunnel into which our Naga family seems to have gotten lost. Finally, I (Kaka Angami) also wish to add my highest respect as well as deepest condolence to the bereaved family of general Maken . May his soul rest in peace. Kaka D. Iralu

is that its cadre comes from the RSS. Maybe, that is the reason that there is no scam in the government. However one may dislike the RSS ideology, its emphasis on integrity cannot be doubted. Yet, there should be no misgiving on its interference in the governance. Even top bureaucrats are judged on their proximity to the Hindutva philosophy. Modi himself was an RSS parcharak (preacher). Even now he is a regular visitor to Nagpur where he interacts with the RSS leadership. Some of the ideas he gathers from there are reflected in the policy which his government frames. This has torn asunder the fabric of nation’s secular temperament in the country and given rise to extremist groups in different regions. I only hope that it is a passing phase. But as long as it lasts the preference for sons of the soil will be casting a shadow on the idea of India. This is unfortunate. I hope that the Prime Minister will rethink his policies so that the basic structure of the constitution is no way affected.
Etched in my mind
t was a perspiring afternoon listening to the man of God opening God’s authoritative word right before our hearts. I was convicted, guilt-stricken and deeply moved by the presentation of it not with human eloquence or oration but a demonstration of God’s power and dynamite. I left the college challenged, sober and feeling a sense of lost-ness of my own feebleness and incompetence. I returned home with the thought of resting. Once again, my body was tired, sluggish and relaxed. In the back of my mind, I remembered the call of my friend to go down to a place of solitary mount with children numbering 70+. Leading them into singing and my vocaland fatigue got lost in the midst of those heavenly voices. My mind will be etched with memories of them singing “Shalom” to pockets of listeners. The song echoes to a tattered, cold, harsh and cruel world. The face of angels with innocence covering their simple yet shattered appearances. I saw the hollow and mysterious sleepy eyes longing for loving embrace and care. Many of them were lost in their own world and we prayed the Lord shine His light upon their simple hearts with the divine touch. I was drained yet I couldn’t help but notice they were too weary as well. Dozens of them were dozing off on their dry wooden seats with no one to lean on. I wish I could paint a picture of those puzzling “Big Eyes” before you. Why in the world and that too at this young fragile years? It reminds me of my high-school days, a chapter on “What Men Live by” by Leo Tolstoy. The angel pitied but God’s command stands supreme. What lessons do we have to learn? The angel suffers to learn the enigma of human predicaments. I see no point in grasping the will and plans of God in such a state. I see parents carrying kids on their bosoms to schools. I see kids returning after a long tiresome day to rest in the comfort of one’s own home. “This is not fair,” as I dejectedly mused about. “Why so much disparity?” and my heart would not let me rest. These kids need love, security and shelter. They need decent clothes to cover their bodies, education and proper sanitations for their health and well-being. Yes, I have my questions as youalso may have. But what good is sympathyand reasoning if there are no deeds displayed. I’m not a philanthropist or a rich chap. But I know how and where to invest. It is in this kind of places that they need our love the most. The society we live in today has become self-centred, selfish and seekers of one’s own gain. But a visit to this heavenly place will change your worldview around. I bet you meet them in persons and see for yourselves. No one should ever leave the place without emptying their pockets. The Bible tells us, “And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (Matthew 18:5). Vebu Khamo, Kohima Bible College (Alumni)

Sir,
Dimapur railway high school requires facelift
Educational institutions are said to be temple of learning and our society is served by the products of these centres. One such institute, the Dimapur Railway High School has produced some outstanding students in the past and some of the records set by this school will take some efforts to match, leave aside surpassing them. However, with the passage of time this premier institute has been reduced to a level which is painful for all Dimapurians. It is learnt that the NF Railway has totally neglected this school with no maintenance of the existing structures and its surroundings. If that is the case, the administration and maintenance of this school should be handed over to some non-profit organization of Dimapur for its revival to restore the past glory. Since the property belongs to the NF Railway and it is left neglected, no organization or govt. agencies will come to its rescue unless some arrangements are made to benefit the student community. Recently, the drainage in the school compound which remained clogged for a long period of time causing water logging creating difficulties to both teachers, students and other staff has been cleared on the initiative on the Administrator, DMC, Shri Atokhe Aye and the President Hazi Park Businessmen Welfare Committee, Shri Hukato V. Achumi. Will others be as benevolent to save this dying institution? Timir Choudhury, Dimapur

Kolkata, Jun 8 (IANS): T. Rajkumar, the alleged mastermind of an organ trafficking racket at Delhi’s Indraprastha Apollo hospital, owned two houses, including a palatial building, in Kolkata, and gave lavish four-figure tips to even the local barber. Rajkumar, who was living for the past three years in the Rajarhat area of the city’s north east fringes close to the airport, posed as a big trader of saline solution “with business interests abroad”. Rajkumar, who lived with his wife and son, kept aloof from the neighbours. “I never saw anything suspicious. I only heard that he had business interests abroad, and dealt in saline,” said a middle aged woman, living close to Rajkumar’s house. “I used to see Rajkumar very rarely. He always used to
keep to himself,” she said. According to the locals, he purchased a small house in the Khamar Shibtala area of Rajarhat in 2013. Recently, he built a huge, luxury edifice 200 metres away from the first house. On Monday, he had thrown a lavish feast marking his “Griha Pravesh” - house warming ceremony - into the new residence “Seven Hills”. A day later, well-decorated invitation cards reached the locals for Rajkumar’s marriage anniversary. There were around 250 invitees. But as the party was on, came the denouement. Delhi Policemen knocked on the door, and arrested him for being the ringleader of the organ racket. The arrest has come like a bolt from the blue for the neighbours. And stories have now started circulating about
New Delhi, Jun 8 (IANS): The central government on Wednesday rejected a study on pollution published in the Geophysical Research Letters Journal of the American Geophysical Union. “We reject the claims made in the socalled research article that each Indian loses six years of his/her life because of pollution. The Ministry of Earth Sciences does not agree with the study and completely rejects it,” Minister of State of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar said in a statement here. The minister said the study is based on regional atmospheric chemistry model and statistical algorithm to construct estimates.
“This (study) is based on studies in Europe and America, which have been extrapolated on India. It has not been done on sampling and not based on long-term observations.” Javadekar said the government is however serious about tackling pollution. “India recognises pollution as a major problem and we are tackling it very seriously. But there are other pollutants also that are harmful to health. Ozone is a pollutant that has an adverse impact on life and which is predominantly present in California. NOx is another pollutant present much more in Mexico, UAE and China, than in India. “SOx is another pollutant that is serious. Every pollutant adversely affects health.
India’s first bullet train project hits a roadblock Mumbai, Jun 8 (Agencies): India’s first bullet train project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai appears to have hit a roadblock, and that too a major one. As per a report in The Indian Express, the Maharashtra government has told the Indian Railways that it would not allow the most crucial station of the Rs 98,000crore project – Mumbai – to be built at the proposed site. The Railways is set to construct the Mumbai station underground at the BandraKurla Complex (BKC), which is a central business district. The plan to construct the Mumbai station at BKC was prepared by Japanese consultants, who had done a thorough research before zeroing in on the area. However, the state government is now reported to have told the Railways that the proposed station at BKC would affect its plans to come up with a financial centre at the same place. The Maharashtra government is not ready to budge despite the fact that the bullet train station would be underground, the newspaper report said. The state government estimates a loss to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore if the station is built at the proposed site. Officials from the Railway Ministry have already met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other officials but no breakthrough has been reached.

the man, his extravagance. “We are now hearing that he was a spendthrift. That he used to give tips of Rs 1,000 to the barber in local saloons for a mere hair cut. Even while travelling the short distance from his residence to the airport, he used to pay the driver Rs 2,000”. Rajkumar was on Wednesday presented at the Barasat Court which gave him on a three-day transit remand to Delhi Police. He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy for trading in human kidneys. Police busted the racket on June 2 with the arrest of two Indraprastha Apollo Hospital employees and three touts on the charge of persuading poor people to sell their kidneys.

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI): Railway unions have called for a nationwide indefinite strike by workers from July 11 to press their demands including review of new pension scheme and 7th Pay Commission recommendations. “We will serve strike notices to railways tomorrow for going ahead with our indefinite strike from 6 AM on July 11,” said All-India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) General Secretary S Gopal Mishra. He claimed the strike is “inevitable due to the nugatory attitude” of the government over the charter of demands submitted more than six months back, though they had deferred their strike from April at its instance. Railways employ about 13 lakh workers and any strike would severely affect train movement and cause inconvenience to people across the country. Railway unions have sought a review of the new pension scheme and 7th Pay Commission recommendations, besides filling up of the large number of vacant posts among other demands. Supporting the strike call, National Federation of Indian Railwaymen General Secretary M Raghavaiah said, “We will serve notices at all zonal general managers of railways tomorrow for going ahead with our strike call on July 11.” Raghavaiah said both the unions are jointly supporting the strike call. “Our demands are the same and we will go ahead together against the government’s anti-labour laws,” he said.

LOS ANGELES, JUN 8 (PTI): Hillary Clinton today made history as she became the first woman to clinch the presidential nomination of a major American political party by winning crucial California and three other state primaries but her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders remained defiant. “Thanks to you, we’ve reached a milestone, the first time in our nation’s history that a woman will be a major party’s nominee,” Clinton, 68, told her supporters at her campaign headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. President Barack Obama congratulated Clinton for securing the 2,383 delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic party’s presidential nomination. However, Obama did not formally endorse Clinton – his former Secretary of State. “Her historic campaign inspired millions and is an extension of her lifelong fight for middle-class families and children,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. Obama called both Clinton and Sanders to applaud them for “running inspiring campaigns that energised Democrats.” The President will meet
Hillary Clinton Sanders at the White House tomorrow at the Vermont senator’s request, Earnest said in a statement. Clinton, who won California, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, now has 2,755 delegates or more than half of the 4,051 total pledged delegates while Sanders has 1,852. However, Sanders, who won in Montana and North Dakota, refused to concede defeat to Clinton, vowing to stay in the Democratic nomination race. “Next Tuesday we continue the fight,” Sanders told a large crowd of cheering supporters gathered in Santa Monica.
Bernie Sanders vows to stay in Democratic nomination race SANTA MONICA (US), JUN 8 (AFP): Bernie Sanders refused to concede defeat to Hillary Clinton today, vowing to “continue the fight” for the Democratic nomination despite his rival declaring herself the party’s flagbearer for the US presidential race. “Next Tuesday we continue the fight in the last primary in Washington DC,” the senator from Vermont told supporters in California.”And then we take our fight for social, economic, racial and environmental justice to Philadelphia,” where the Democratic convention will be held to formally nominate the party’s candidate to challenge Republican Donald Trump for the White House. Sanders appeared to ignore the political writing on the wall, after Clinton surpassed the number of delegates necessary to clinch the party’s nomination. Tuesday was the last major date of the 2016 primary calendar, with six states voting. The former secretary of state extended
her delegate lead with wins in New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. Sanders won North Dakota and Montana, US networks said. The grand prize, California, had yet to be called, but Clinton was holding a substantial lead. Sanders graciously acknowledged Clinton’s victories, drawing some boos from the crowd. “Our fight is to transform this country and to understand that we are in this together. To understand that all of what we believe is what the majority of the American people believe,” Sanders said. Sanders by all accounts has conducted an extraordinary grassroots campaign. His supporters are deeply passionate, and Clinton has made it clear she is welcoming any and all of them to her general election campaign as she seeks to defeat Trump. But Sanders signalled he would want to have an important role not just for keeping the White House in Democratic hands, but in shaping the party’s policy platform.”

“We are going to fight hard to win the primary in Washington, DC, and then we take our fight for social, economic, racial and environmental justice to Philadelphia.” Sanders, 74, has been facing mounting pressure to drop out of the race amid calls for Democratic party unity. In the November presidential elections, Clinton would face fellow New Yorker Donald Trump, from the Republican party, who she said is not fit to lead the country. If elected November, she would be the first ever woman president of the US. “To every little girl who dreams big: Yes, you can be anything you want—even president. Tonight is for you,” Clinton said. “We cannot let a man who demeans women, attacks people for their race or religion, and traffics in paranoid conspiracy theories take the oath of office,” she said, attacking 69-year-old Trump. “We won’t let a man who said he’ll order our troops to commit war crimes by killing the wives and children of suspected terrorists become Commander-in-Chief.
2 officers killed in Turkey car bomb
ANKARA, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Two police officers were killed in a car bomb attack today in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast, a day after 11 people were killed in an attack on a police bus in Istanbul. The car bomb ripped through the main police station in the town of Midyat near the Syrian border, said state-run Anatolia news agency, which blamed “terrorists” in a reference to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The explosion left two police officers dead and several other people wounded, the privately owned Dogan news agency said. Images carried by Turkish media showed a massive plume of black smoke rising from the rubble of the severely damaged police station. The windows of houses in the neighbourhood were shattered by the force of the blast. Ambulances and fire engines were dispatched to the scene after the powerful explosion.
Obama asks Pak to punish North Korea restarts plutonium Pathankot attack perpetrators production for nuclear bombs: US official
Barack Obama WA S H I N G T O N , J U N 8 (AGENCIES): Treating Pathankot attack at par with 26/11, President Barack Obama on Tuesday sent out a clear message to Pakistan, asking it to punish its perpetrators amid the US vow to stand with India against terror threats from Pakistan-based groups like JeM, LeT and Dawood “company”. “They (Obama and Modi) called for Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot terrorist attacks to justice,” a joint statement issued after the Obama-Modi meeting at the White House said. During the meeting, Modi and Obama acknowledged the continued threat posed to human civilisation by terrorism and condemned the recent terrorist incidents from Paris to Pathankot, from Brussels to Ka-
bul, the statement said. “They resolved to redouble their efforts, bilaterally and with other like-minded countries, to bring to justice the perpetrators of terrorism anywhere in the world and the infrastructure that supports them,” the statement said. During the meeting, Obama and Modi committed to strengthen cooperation against terrorist threats from extremist groups, such as “al-Qaeda, Daesh/ISIL, Jaish-e Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, D Company and their affiliates, including through deepened collaboration on UN terrorist designations.” “In this context, they directed their officials to identify specific new areas of collaboration at the next meeting of US-India counterterrorism joint working group,” the statement said. “Recognising an important milestone in the US-India counter-terrorism partnership, the leaders applauded the finalisation of an arrangement to facilitate the sharing of terrorist screening information,” it said. Modi and Obama also affirmed their support for a UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism that advances and strengthens the framework for global cooperation and reinforces that no cause or grievance justifies terrorism, the statement said.
WASHINGTON, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): North Korea has restarted production of plutonium fuel, a senior State Department official said on Tuesday, showing that it plans to pursue its nuclear weapons program in defiance of international sanctions. The US assessment came a day after the UN nuclear watchdog said it had “indications” that Pyongyang has reactivated a plant to recover plutonium from spent reactor fuel at Yongbyon, its main nuclear complex. The latest developments suggest North Korea’s reclusive communist government is working to ensure a steady supply of materials for its drive to build warheads, despite tightened international sanctions after its fourth nuclear test in January. The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Washington is worried by the new plutonium reprocessing effort, but he offered no explicit word on any US response. “Everything in North Korea is a cause for concern,” the official said. “They take the spent fuel from the 5 megawatt reactor at Yongbyon and let it cool and then take it to the reprocessing facility, and that’s where they’ve obtained
BANGKOK, JUN 8 (AGENCIES): Two speedboats packed with 62 tourists collided on Wednesday off the coast of southern Thailand, leaving at least two dead and more than 20 injured, police said. The fatalities were identified as Chinese. The crash was the latest incident to mar the country’s image as a tourist paradise, and the third crash in two weeks involving boats that shuttle vacationers to Thailand’s resort islands. The collision involved a boat carrying 36 passengers and another with 26 travelling near the popular island of Phuket, said Lt Col Prasert Srikhunrat, deputy superintendent of Phuket’s marine police. He said most of the passengers were Chinese tourists, including the two who died. He did not immediately have more details about other nationalities or the cause of the crash. Tourism is a key source of revenue for Thailand, which received nearly 30

million foreign visitors in 2015. Boat and tour bus crashes and other accidents involving tourists have become common, as more and more foreigners visit the country known for lax enforcement of laws and safety regulations. On Sunday, a speedboat near the resort island of Koh Samet rammed into an anchored boat, injuring 30 people on board, according to Thai news reports. In late May, another speedboat carrying 32 tourists capsized in rough waters off Koh Samui, leaving three tourists dead. The victims were from Britain, Germany and Hong Kong. In February, two Russian tourists were badly injured while scuba diving off Phi Phi island in Krabi province, when a speedboat’s propeller severed one of the men’s legs and cut deep gashes into the other man’s leg.
CAIRO JUN 8 (AGENCIES): A bomb threat forced an EgyptAir aircraft en route to Beijing from Cairo to make an emergency landing in Uzbekistan today, Egyptian officials said, the latest in a series of deadly or damaging air travel incidents involving Egypt. The plane, an Airbus A-330-220, landed at the airport in the town of Urgench, about 840 kilometres west of the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, three hours after it took off from Cairo at around 11:30 p.m. yesterday. All 135 passengers and crew on board were evacuated and the aircraft was being searched, the officials said. They had no word on whether a bomb or any other suspicious object was found on board. According to the Egyptian officials, an anonymous caller telephoned security agents at the Cairo airport to say a bomb was on board the flight. The agents immediately contacted the aircraft and or-

Nuclear program shrouded in secrecy While North Korea in the past has often obtained key components for its nuclear program from other countries despite international sanctions, there was no sign of any recent outside procurement involved in reactivating its plutonium reprocessing, the official said. There is little proven knowledge about the quantities of weapons-grade uranium or plutonium that North Korea possesses, or its ability to produce either, though plutonium from spent fuel at Yongbyon is widely believed to have been used in its nuclear bombs. Experts at the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in Washington predicted last year that North Korea’s nuclear weapons stockpile could grow to 20, 50 or 100 bombs within five years, from an estimated 10 to 16 weapons at that time. North Korea has come under tightening international pressure over its nuclear weapons program, including tougher UN sanctions adopted in March backed by its lone major ally China, following its most recent nuclear blast and ballistic missile tests.

the plutonium for their previous nuclear tests. So they are repeating that process,” the official said. “That’s what they’re doing.” Pyongyang vowed in 2013 to restart all nuclear facilities, including the main reactor and the smaller plant at Yongbyon, which was shut down in 2007 as part of an international disarmament-foraid deal that later collapsed. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has no access to North Korea and mainly monitors its activities by satellite, said last year it had seen signs of a resumption of activity at Yongbyon. IAEA chief Yukiya Amano told a news conference in Vienna on Monday that there have been indications of renewed plutonium reprocessing activities at Yongbyon. Reprocessing involves extracting plutonium from spent reactor fuel, one route to obtaining bomb fuel other than uranium enrichment.”I would agree that there are indications,” the US official said. The official declined to confirm whether this determination was made from satellite imagery or intelligence sources, or to say how much plutonium North Korea could produce by this method.

dered it to land at the nearest airport, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. In Russia, the news agency RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed official with Uzbekistan Airways as saying the airport has been closed following the EgyptAir plane’s emergency landing. The incident came nearly three weeks after an EgyptAir flight crashed in the Mediterranean Sea as it was approaching the Egyptian coast while en route to Cairo from Paris. All 66 people on board were killed and the search for the
plane’s flight and data recorders - the so called black boxes – is still underway. Egyptian officials say the Paris-Cairo plane was most likely downed by an act of terror. Last October, a Russian airliner crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula shortly after taking off from the Egyptian resort city of Sharm elSheikh, killing all 224 people on board. A local affiliate of the extremist Islamic State group claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft just hours after the crash. In November, Russia said an explosive device brought down the aircraft.

o n y Vi s c o n t i , b e s t known for his work with David Bowie, has questioned whether Adele’s voice as heard on her records is actually her own. Visconti worked with Bowie throughout the late singer’s career, from his second album in 1969 to final album ‘Blackstar’. Speaking to The Daily Star, Visconti bemoaned the current state of modern pop music, saying: “You turn the radio on and it’s fluff, you are listening to 90% computerised voices.” He continued: “We know Adele has a great voice but it’s even questionable if that is actually her voice or how much has been manipulated. We don’t know.” Visconti is set to be involved with the new series of Sky Arts TV talent show Guitar Star. “There’s a sound to pop now that is so perfect it’s boring, because everything is fixed,” he added. “I’m looking for virtuosos like Hendrix, Cobain and Bowie. There’s no fluffy back story, there’s no: ‘I lost my pet dog in 97 and that made me want to play’ nonsense.” “No-one can mistake me for Simon Cowell. Today is the worst time ever in the music industry, but Guitar Star is a step in the right direction”. Visconti also recently
said that “great” unreleased Bowie music is likely to be released in the near future. Following Bowie’s death in January, Visconti said it was “logical” that previously unreleased music would be coming out. Visconti told The Evening Standard: “I think it’s logical that, over the next few years, you’re going to hear a lot of stuff that you haven’t heard before. I’m in talks with his management and his label - there’s going to be some great Bowie stuff coming out.” However, Visconti was unable to confirm the whereabouts of five additional songs he produced during the sessions of Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’. He said: “I haven’t heard those songs yet. I might actually have to help his management company find them.
I have an idea where he might have recorded them.” Visconti said it was more likely initially that extra songs recorded during sessions for other Bowie albums would be released first. Bowie’s box-set ‘Five Years’, released in 2015, included a double album of previously unreleased songs covering the box’s 1969-73 years. It’s expected similar unreleased material will be included in the second volume of box-sets spanning Bowie’s career. It’s believed the second box-set may be released this autumn. Bowie is known to have recorded many songs that have never officially been released. This includes an entire album, ‘Toy’, which was recorded in 2001 in between his albums ‘Hours’ and ‘Heathen’.

make us in any way face the Euros with a sense of fear.” Del Bosque had named a stronger side than in Spain’s comfortable wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Korea in the past week with the Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid contingent returning after their duties in the Champions League final. The hosts were camped in the Georgia half for almost the entire match, but paid for a lack of creativity in breaking down the visitors’ mass ranks of defence and were caught out on the counter-attack just before the break. “We wanted to build on our confidence and create a good atmosphere, but it wasn’t to be and it has been a disappointment,” added Del Bosque. “We didn’t play terribly badly because they scored a goal on the counter-attack. “We were unable to
break down a very well-organised defence and were lacking in the final third.” However, Del Bosque rejected suggestions that the Czechs and Spain’s other Group D opponents Turkey and Croatia can learn from Georgia’s gameplan. “I would like us to always play in the opposition’s half,” he said. “Hopefully in our three (group) games it will be like this.” Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez impressed early on as he made his international debut and from his cross Aritz Aduriz was inches away from opening the scoring with a bullet header that flew just wide. Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara struck the post from outside the box as Spain continued to press. However, they were caught out when captain for the evening Sergio Ramos was

NE W DE L H I , J u n 8 (IANS): He may have won 18 Grand Slams but veteran tennis star Leander Paes still has immense hunger to pocket some more before deciding to hang up his boots. Paes, who recently completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open mixed doubles with Swiss great Martina Hingis , said on Tuesday that he would love to get 20 Grand Slam wins. “I love achieving history. I would love to get to 20 Grand Slams,” Paes said while dedicating all his titles to his father - former Olympic bronze medallist Dr Vece Paes . “My father has been my backbone in my career. He has been my biggest critic and I would not have been here without him,” he said while also thanking his trainer and travel companion Sanjay Singh for handling him well during tough times. Paes’ 18th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros also brought him level to a mixed doubles titles record of 10 with his “favourite” and legendary Martina Navratilova . “Martina Navratilova is someone for whom what I feel cannot be described in words. She’s the one who taught me about longevity,” Paes explained. Recalling his meeting with late boxing legend Muhammed Ali, who passed away aged 74, the Atlanta Olympics bronze medallist said he idolised the American professional boxer since childhood. “After I had won the bronze at Atlanta, I remember meeting Ali. His voice was a bit weak but he told me that it is your job to inspire each and every young child in your country. He was right. It is my job to motivate that they can also be champions,” he said.
South Africa beat Australia by 47-run in low scoring encounter
London, Jun 8 (Agencies): South Africa roared back into contention in the Tri-Nation One-Day International series with a 47-run victory over Australia in the third match of the tournament at the Guyana National Stadium on Tuesday. Defending a modest 189 for nine on another pitch that challenged the patience and technique of all batsmen, the Proteas bowlers were resisted only by opener Aaron Finch’s defiant 72 before he was ninth out as the World Cup-holders folded for 142 off 34.2 overs. By virtue of their margin of victory, South Africa also earned a bonus point and leapt from last to first on net runrate over Australia, leaving hosts West Indies third. Competition resumes in St Kitts on Saturday with South Africa and Australia renewing their rivalry at Warner Park. Farhaan Behardien’s workmanlike innings of 62 held South Africa’s innings together and earned him the “Man of the Match” award. However pacer Kagiso Rabada shared the plaudits with a useful unbeaten 15 as the tail contributed important runs and then led the way with the ball as he claimed three for 13 off seven probing overs. Rabada disposed of Usman Khawaja in his opening spell and returned to account for wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade and tailender Nathan Coulter-Nile in an excellent display of controlled fast bowling. His effort was supported by Wayne Parnell, who shared the new ball and got rid of the dangerous David Warner in his very first over. Playing his first ODI for almost 16 months, Parnell then trapped Australian captain Steve Smith leg-before. Spinners Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso then tightened the stranglehold
is yet to reveal his choice of partner for the men’s doubles event at the Rio Games. He can choose either Leander Paes or Saketh Myneni. Bopanna and Mahut, who had lost the world’s longest singles match to John Isner in the first round of 2010 Wimbledon championships, did not face a single breakpoint in the match and broke their rivals thrice.

Coulter-Nile, who replaced Mitchell Starc from the opening victory over West Indies two days earlier, made the most of the opportunity with a spell of two for 38 off 10 overs. He claimed the vital wickets of de Villiers and J.P. Duminy in consecutive overs to reduce the South Africans to 104 for five midway through the innings, effectively killing off any realistic chance they had of posting a formidable total. Hazlewood was even more economical in conceding 20 runs off 10 metronomic overs. He earned an LBW verdict against Quinton de Kock to break the opening partnership with Hashim Amla and returned to get rid of Parnell. South Africa entertained hopes of a challenging total when de Villiers and Amla were at the crease. The two most experienced batsmen in the side put on 40 for the third wicket before Amla was run out for the third time in ODI’s against Australia.

Del Bosque reacted by making four changes at the break with Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta among those introduced. David Silva then replaced Vazquez on the hour mark and the hosts created far more with their two principal playmakers on the field. Iniesta and Nolito fired just wide before Jordi Alba mishit his effort from close range straight into the midriff of substitute Georgian goalkeeper Roini Kvaskhvadze. Yet, despite seven minutes of stoppage time being added on by Icelandic referee Vilhjalmur Thorarinsson, Spain’s search for an equaliser petered out as they suffered defeat for the first time in 12 matches.

Pasadena (California)/Chicago, Jun 8 (IANS): Colombia were inspired by captain James Rodriguez and two critical saves from goalkeeper David Ospina to hold off Paraguay 2-1 and become the first team to book passage into the Copa America Centenario football quarterfinals. Rodriguez was Colombia’s catalyst, his corner to Carlos Bacca in the 12th minute resulting in Colombia’s first goal at the Rose Bowl stadium here on Tuesday. Rodriguez then scored his team’s second goal in the 30th minute. Rodriguez was an injury doubt for the match with a shoulder injury, but he was in coach Jose Pekerman’s starting line-up. Paraguay broke through with Victor Ayala’s long-distance strike in the 71st minute, but could not equalise.
Bobby Wood in the back, referee Roddy Zambrano whistled for a penalty kick. Dempsey coolly placed his shot into the lower right corner. Later in the first half, Dempsey set up both Gyasi Zardes and Jermaine Jones for shots they fired high before the second goal arrived in the 37th minute. Jones started the play with pressure and a sliding pass to Dempsey near midfield, then finished it with a well-placed low shot from the top of the penalty area. The US made it 3-0 five minutes later when Dempsey fed Wood at the top of the penalty area, and the striker turned his man before firing a shot inside the near post. Costa Rica created two good second half chances, but Celso Borges flicked his shot over the net in the 55th minute, and Bryan Ruiz headed a short corner kick against the left post in the 67th minute. US substitute Graham Zusi wrapped things up in the 87th minute with a steal and a low, left-footed finish, while goalkeeper Brad Guzan made two saves to record the shutout.
