Infighting in Taliban as Baradar brawl with Haqqani

Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar NEW DELHI, SEP 15

(IANS): A major row broke out between leaders of the Taliban over the make-up of the group’s new government in Afghanistan last week, BBC reported.

The argument between the group’s co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and a cabinet member happened at the presidential palace, the report said.

There have been unconfirmed reports of disagreements within the Taliban’s leadership since Baradar disappeared from public view in recent days. One Taliban source told BBC Pashto that Baradar and Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani - the minister for refugees and a prominent figure within the militant Haqqani network - had exchanged strong words, as their followers brawled with each other nearby. The Taliban sources told the BBC that Baradar had left Kabul and travelled to the city of Kandahar following the row. A senior Taliban member based in Qatar and a person connected to those involved also confirmed that an argument had taken place late last week, the report said. The sources said the argument had broken out because Baradar, the new deputy prime minister, was unhappy about the structure of their interim government.

It has been said that the row stemmed from divisions over who in the Taliban should take credit for their victory in Afghanistan.

Baradar reportedly believes that the emphasis should be placed on diplomacy carried out by people like him, while members of the Haqqani group - which is run by one of the most senior Taliban figures - and their backers say it was achieved through fighting.

Meanwhile, the powerful Haqqani network is associated with some of the most violent attacks that have occurred in Afghanistan against Afghan forces and their Western allies in recent years. The group is designated by the US as a terrorist organisation.

NEW DELHI, SEP 15

(IANS): The Taliban have confirmed confiscating more than $6.5 million and 18 gold bricks from the house of former VicePresident Amrullah Saleh and handed them over to the Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB), Pajhwok News reported.

Recently, Mullah Shahabuddin Delawar, a Taliban member, told TOLO news that they had found $1 million each in two different places of Presidential Palace.

A video went viral on social media, in which a person said: “This is the house of Amrullah Saleh when we came here, we found $105,000 and we handed them over to the Governor.”

The man said: “Today we found $6.2 million and nearly 18 gold bricks and we will hand them over to our leaders.”

The video clip shows several people counting and taking pictures of dollars bundles and gold bricks, the report said.

The location of Saleh’s house was not specified in the video clip, but it shows it is in Panjsher province.

The Taliban launched attacks on the province about two weeks ago and gained control of the province on September 6.

On Monday, secretary of Zabihullah Mujahid, Mohammad Bilal Karimi said that he could not confirm the report about dollars and gold.

Karimi posted the video of dollars and gold on his twitter account, saying: “The Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate have found more than $6 million and 18 gold bricks from the house of Ashraf Ghani’s first deputy, Amrullah Saleh.”

However, a source in Da Afghanistan Bank also said that the money and gold had been handed over to the bank.

BEIJING, SEP 15 (PTI):

China on Wednesday supported the Taliban’s demand that the US should unfreeze Afghanistan’s assets and said that America has no legitimate reasons to do so as the Chinese envoy to Kabul called on acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and congratulated the interim government.

According to reports from Washington, the US has frozen about USD 9.5 billion in assets belonging to Afghanistan’s central bank and stopped shipments of cash to Kabul, in a bid to keep the Taliban government from accessing the money.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters here that the US has no legitimate reasons to freeze Afghanistan’s assets. Asked about the Taliban’s demand that the US should unfreeze Afghanistan’s assets stating that they belong to the people of Afghanistan and the interim government will take a legal action possible to get the funds released, Zhao said: “I think that the (Taliban’s) spokesperson is right”.

“These assets belong to the Afghan people.

“They (the US) should respond to the legitimate requests of the Afghan people and stop the wrong practice of sanctions and stop making obstacles for Afghanistan’s peace and reconstruction,” he said.

After the Taliban’s seizure of power in Afghanistan last month, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank halted their aid to the war-torn country which largely depends upon the flow of foreign funds.

According to reports from Kabul, Afghanistan’s economy is near collapse even as the United Nations has made hectic efforts to galvanise global efforts to rush food and essential supplies. Meanwhile, in a major boost to the Taliban’s fledgling interim government which struggled to gain international recognition as it mainly comprises the Taliban leaders, contrary to its promise of forming an inclusive government, China’s Ambassador in Kabul Wang Yu met acting Afghan Foreign Minister Muttaqi on Tuesday.

“This afternoon, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi met with the Ambassador of the neighboring China Wang Yu in Kabul,” Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem said in a tweet, adding that the Chinese ambassador “congratulated the new Afghan government”.

Wang also promised that “China will continue its humanitarian, economic and political cooperation with Afghanistan,” Russia’s official news agency TASS quoted Naeem as saying.

UNGA prez calls for redoubling efforts to implement SDGs

UNITED NATIONS, SEP 15 (IANS): President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Volkan Bozkir, has called for redoubling efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while expressing the concern that the 2030 deadline might be missed.

Noting that the SDGs represent a blueprint for peace and prosperity, for people and the planet, now and into the future and implementing these goals will help to protect the international community against future catastrophes, he on Tuesday warned that “with the trajectory we are on, we are going to miss the 2030 deadline.”

“This Assembly and you - the member states who make up the United Nations - must redouble efforts to implement the SDGs,” Xinhua news agency quoted Bozkir as saying during the closing of the 75th UNGA session.

On multilateralism, the veteran Turkish diplomat said that “we must strengthen and unite behind the multilateral system.”

“Our world is increasingly globalised, interconnected and interdependent. As such, nationalistic solutions will not resolve our challenges,” he stressed.

“It is my belief that a multilateral strategy may have helped to guard us better against the spread of Covid and its variants and protect those most vulnerable,” he said.

Speaking about inequality, Bozkir said that “as we move forward, the UN and member states must focus on the gaps that were revealed to us.”

“This most critically includes the lingering and ever widening digital divide. If we wish to achieve Agenda 2030, inequality must be reduced,” Bozkir continued.

North Korea fires 2 ballistic missiles into eastern waters

SEOUL, SEP 15 (AP):

North Korea fired two ballistic missiles into waters off its eastern coast Wednesday afternoon, two days after claiming to have tested a newly developed missile in a resumption of its weapons displays after a six-month lull. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched from central North Korea on Wednesday afternoon.

Japan’s coast guard says they landed outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone in the waters between Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Seoul said South Korean and US intelligence authorities are analyzing more details about the North Korean launches.

launches, the joint chiefs’ statement said, adding that South Korea has boosted its anti-North Korea surveillance posture.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the missiles landed outside of the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone in the waters between northwestern Japan and the Korean Peninsula.

“The firings threaten the peace and safety of Japan and the region and are absolutely outrageous,” Suga said. “The government of Japan is determined to further step up our vigilance and surveillance to be prepared for any contingencies,” he said. Japan’s coast guard said no ships or aircraft reported damage due to the North Korean launches.

North Korea had said Monday it tested a newly developed cruise missile twice over the weekend. North Korea’s state media described the missile as a “strategic weapon of great significance,” implying they were developed with the intent to arm them with nuclear warheads.

According to North Korean accounts, the missile flew about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles), a distance putting all of Japan and US military installations there within reach. Many experts say the weekend tests suggested North Korea is pushing to bolster its weapons arsenal amid a deadlock in nuclear diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington. Wednesday’s launches came as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was in Seoul for meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and other senior officials to discuss the stalled nuclear diplomacy with the North.

It’s unusual for North Korea to make provocative launches when China, its last major ally and biggest aid provider, is engaged in a major diplomatic event.

Moon’s office said Moon told Wang that he appreciates China’s role in the international diplomatic push to resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff and asked for Beijing’s continuing support of such efforts.

Saudi Arabia approves law to protect personal data

RIYADH, SEP 15 (IANS): The Saudi Cabinet has approved the Personal Data Protection Law that aims to reinforce respect for individuals’ privacy and contribute to the creation of a data-based digital economy. The law will be implemented 180 days after its issuance, Xinhua news agency reported. President of Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA) Abdullah bin Sharaf Alghamdi said in a statement that the law would help accelerate the process of digital transformation and create an information-based society.

The digital transformation empowers the private sector, creates a regulatory environment conducive to business growth, and attracts foreign investments, he added. The law protects the rights related to processing personal data, regulates their sharing between entities, and prevents their misuse, and will therefore enhance the local economy and build trust in the data sector, he said.

He highlighted that it is impermissible to use personal means of communication to send marketing or awarenessraising materials to individuals unless consent has been obtained.

Only 2% of world’s Covid vax administered in Africa: WHO

GENEVA, SEP 15 (IANS):

Africa has been “left behind by the rest of the world” as only two per cent of the more than 5.7 billion Covid-19 vaccine doses administered globally have been administered there, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said, warning the world against vaccine inequity.

The WHO’s aim is to vaccinate at least 40 per cent of the population of every country by the end of this year and 70 per cent by the middle of next year. However, only two countries in Africa have reached the 40-per cent target, the lowest of any region, Xinhua news agency quoted WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as saying. “That’s not because African countries don’t have the capacity or experience to roll out COVID-19 vaccines. It’s because they have been left behind by the rest of the world,” he said.

Last year, the WHO and its partners launched COVAX, the global initiative to ensure fair and equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines.

To date, it has delivered more than 260 million vaccine doses to 141 countries.

However, COVAX has also faced several challenges which, according to the WHO, were triggered by manufacturers prioritising bilateral deals and many high-income countries tying up the global supply of vaccines.

According to John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who also attended the briefing, less than 3.5 per cent of Africans have been vaccinated against Covid-19, which is far short of the official target of 60 per cent. “This leaves people at high risk of disease and death, exposed to a deadly virus against which many other people around the world enjoy protection,” Tedros said.

“The longer vaccine inequity persists, the more the virus will keep circulating and changing, the longer the social and economic disruption will continue, and the higher the chances that more variants will emerge that render vaccines less effective,” he warned.
