AIESEC WEEK To help students understand what AIESEC is and the relevance it has to a young person’s life, AIESEC in University of Nairobi started the event AIESEC Week in 2015 to achieve this.. Each year, an organising committee sets out to plan out the event with regards to the prevailing issues in that particular year. This year, it was important to provide young people with the understanding of why Africa is where each young person should focus on thus it was concluded that a public lecture shall be held for this purpose within AIESEC Week. Financial Literacy and Information Technology Forum was also held within AIESEC Week as a continuation of increasing financial literacy and IT understanding in young people which was started in 2013.


CROSS CULTURAL LEARNING THROUGH EXCHANGE SOCIAL IMPACT: To understand what role AIESEC and individuals play in creating positive change in the communities around us and the world at large by providing platforms for individuals to experience cultural diversity in different countries. GLOBAL GOALS: AIESEC in partnership with the UN provides a framework for social impact to take place by aligning all exchange opportunities to the SDGs. INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY: Ownership of each and every person’s role in a society to create positive action for which we can be held morally accountable for.


LEADERSHIP A FUNDAMENTAL SOLUTION The relevance of AIESEC to the society and to young people was explained by Susan Gaciku (AIESEC in Kenya President16.17) and Simon Kioko (AIESEC in Kenya President 14.15) The importance of exchange and how it has benefited communities around us was highlighted by Mary Njeru (Mamma Africa) and two other interns in the country at the time.


DAY2 Frank Ireri Mr. Frank M. Ireri, EBS, has served as Group Managing Director, Executive Director of Housing Finance Ltd. since July 2006. He has previously worked with other Banks on an international level. He is a Counsel Member of AIESEC and previously held the role of Chairman to the AIESEC Board of Advisors.

As a previous AIESEC in UoN and AIESEC in Kenya member, Frank Ireri highlighted his AIESEC experience from joining to international exchange and how the experiences build up on his career on to becoming the MD of Housing Finance Group of Kenya. Mr. Ireri urged the students in attendance to take advantage of the opportunities AIESEC presented and not to shy away from any challenging experiences they will encounter because that is what wil truly test their character. In addition he also mentioned the life long connections he gained through AIESEC of which some are peers in work.

Currently a consultant at Ernst and Young, Rose Sang is a member of AIESEC in UON Board of Advisors who has previously worked with KPMG, Finlays, Kenya Airways, and Qatar Airways.

“YOUTH

“As the young generation, you need to look at Africa’s problems as the greatest opportunities ever presented to you,” he said. “You are in a nexus of the greatest stage in the history of revolution of Africa; what will you do to be part of this revolution?”

Dr. Kipng’etich urged young people to look at Africa as the oasis of the future they want to create for themselves and their continent. * His presentation “Africa Arise, Our time is Now” can be found on www.aiesecuon.or.ke

Stressing on the importance of being in AIESEC and using AIESEC as an added advantge to one’s degree, Mr Kantai urged the youth to take opportunities in AIESEC as he briefly mentioned his own AIESEC experience and how it created opportuities for him.

He went on to add on to the earlier topic of Africa’s time and the conditions we find ourselves in. “As Africans, we are concerned too much about what people say about us. We need to just do it,” he said. “In Africa, the tools for change are available, how we use that is what matters the most.”


PUBLIC LECTURE: PANEL DISCUSSION During the public lecture, the following questions were asked in relation to how the youth are or can be the change within the continent. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Seeing that only Nigeria is destined to be on course as an economic super power by 2030, are there any ways for other African countries to be recognised alongside other economic super powers like Brazil and France? How can Africans overcome the hurdles of population growth and social inequality? What are some of the ways that Kenya can capitalise on the growing middle-class population? In order to change our African narrative, it is necessary to make Africa beautiful for Africans. How are some of the ways we can do this in order to attract both local and international investors? What are some of the reasons that many start-ups do not develop into businesses with scale to provide employment to many as opposed to a select few? How can we improve access for entrepreneurs to innovate and grow further? Does rapid technological advancement pose a threat to employment? What are some of the ways we can keep up with rapid technological advancement?

Image consultant and a respected publicfigure also couples as a pastor. Robert Burale is the top mostMC in Kenya and 6th finest in Africa. He as well is one of thebest motivational speakers in Kenya.

Kevin Mutiso CEO of Samchi Credit Samchi Credit is a micro credit institution aimed at reducing the bureaucracies ofaccessing finances. Kevin started the company to help SMEs improve their cash flow. He has received several awards, including the Best Agency Award in 2011 and wasnamed Top 40 under 40 Business Daily Award Winner 2015

Great Court in Main Campus hosted the first two days of AIESEC Week. Multi Purpose Hall in 844 Building hosted day 3 and four. Millenium Hall in Chiromo Campus hosted the final day of the event.

POSITIVE STRIDES FROM THE EVENT The Executive Board and University Relations Manager met with the Vice Chancellor of the University and discussed challenges the organisation faces and possible solutions that can be arrived at with the help of the university. • So far the University sends AIESEC opportunities to student email addresses.

• The University further supported three other events after AIESEC Week. • Some of the youth engaged during the event either joined AIESEC or went on exchange. • AIESEC in University of Nairobi is reengaging with its alumni network.
