Girl - 12 My granddad was from Ukraine but this doesn’t really change anything me or my family do. My parents have both lived in England all their lives and me and my brother have never been outside of England. I was brought up as Christian but we don’t go to church or anything, its more about morals and values for us.
Girl - Early 20s I’d say I was British Indian, like an equal mix of the two. I was brought up in a religious Hindu family and I have always been taught about my heritage and culture. Obviously I speak English, I’ve lived here all my life, but I often speak Gujarati at home with my family. I was brought up speaking both.
3. Girl - 17 I don’t ‘feel’ like i’m British, I’m Welsh. I have my own culture and language, Welsh is my first language. I only tick the British box on forms when the option to say I’m Welsh isn’t there. It’s a lot about history really, I’m proud of where I come from and my family's heritage.
4. Boy - 15 I was born in South Africa but my family moved here when I was ten years old, it was a bit of a culture shock but i’m used to living here now. I think you’re British if you live here with your family and if you work or go to school here.
5. Boy - mid 20s My mum is originally from Mexico and my dad has Italian roots in his family. Our family values have definitely been influenced by these different cultures coming together, especially through food. I think the perception of being ‘traditionally British’ is outdated, there are loads of people like me who have a wide range of cultural influences.
6. Boy - 9 We have to move around a lot for dad’s job, he’s in the British Army. I was born in Cyprus, then we moved to Germany and now we are in Scotland. I went to an english speaking school in Germany but we did learn some German so we could talk to people in shops or at the park. My mum is half French but she doesn’t speak french with us, only with her mum. Dad has explained to me and my sister we are British even though we live in lots of different places.
