Congratulations on being named NAPCP’s 2017 Photographer of the Year, Ashley! Please tell us about yourself and how you got your start as a professional photographer. Thank you, NAPCP! I am a wife, a mom to two boys, and always striving to be a loyal friend. Finding balance in all of those roles (and then some) takes daily practice. The people around me give me a whole lot of grace, which allows me to do life well. I’ve always been a photographer ... long before I ever owned professional equipment. It has always been in me to see the world a little differently and I am always searching for something beautiful. It wasn’t until I had the tools to produce high quality images that I was considered by everyone else a photographer. But I felt it all along. What is your favorite aspect of NAPCP as an association? Please tell us about it and why you love NAPCP! Where do I begin? There’s truly nothing like the NAPCP community and the standards it sets for itself and the industry as a whole. Because I have learned so much about actually running my business, making money and holding my head up while I do it, I owe so much to NAPCP for constantly striving to elevate this industry. My favorite aspect of the association is the community group on Facebook -- it’s a safe place to ask questions and give feedback. No judgment, simply honest answers and perspectives from like minded professionals. That is invaluable to me.

What can clients expect during a session with you? What types of images will they see in their galleries? Clients come to me because they see something creative and timeless in my work, and they want both. I can provide both posed (everyone looking at the camera) images in addition to unique perspectives and storytelling images that make them say, “Oh, that’s cool!” They receive large galleries because there is so much variety; my clients feel fully served and that their lives have been truly and uniquely documented. The love between people, and even between you and your subject(s), is evident in your images. What are some ways you draw out deeper feelings during your sessions or when capturing your family? The first impression is everything. Whether that impression is made through a new inquiry email with the mom or approaching a family in the park, my goal is to do nothing but make them feel important. Personally connecting with my clients allows everyone to relax and open up to showing emotion in front of the camera. I will ask my own children or the children of my clients to do something silly like sniff their brother’s hair; it smells like spaghetti, and the aftermath of that is generally laughter and silliness. Creating an environment where we can be playful and laugh opens up the session for further connection and emotion.
Thank you so much, Ashley! N A P C P I n s p i r e d M a g a z i n e Fe b r u a r y 2 0 1 8 | 1 7

Three Tips F O R W O R K- L I F E B A L A NC E by Ashley Berrie
1- I always visualize Tony Robbins’ Wheel of Life when it comes to the worklife balance topic. We are always trying to achieve balance in our daily lives, and something always gains more of our attention one day, then the next ...You can’t operate at 100% in every aspect of life 100% of the time. Choose 2 or 3 aspects of life each day and totally rock at those chosen tasks.
2- Have set work hours. Setting time where you can focus only on your business will create the most productive time windows. Trying to edit/respond to emails/blog, all while making snacks for your children/turning on the next Paw Patrol episode/ changing a diaper will leave you feeling frazzled and overwhelmed. Believe me, I tried it. Separating the two as much as I can leaves me with a feeling of peace and balance. The good news is my clients respect it and understand it because most of them are moms, too.
3- Don’t forget yourself. Take time every day to do something for yourself, even if it’s showering alone or painting your toenails.

Making (Competition) Magic
This year (Or last year, since that’s when I bought the ticket!) I made the decision to attend the NAPCP Retreat, no matter what life kept throwing at me! However, talking with lots of my fellow attendees, I was really surprised to hear that not everyone was using their 2 free image credits to enter Image Competition. When I asked them why, I was met with a the same response, just said slightly differently. “I didn’t feel like my images were worthy.” “No way are my images good enough to enter.” “I didn’t have anything I thought was good enough.” The same thing. Over and over and over. Read more.

Re-Branding to Fit Your Passion As an organization dedicated to passionate artists, we at NAPCP can certainly relate to the fluid aspects of art — including and especially photography. NAPCP member Heather Floyd, of Floyd Family Photography, decided last year that portrait photography was no longer primarily what she wanted to give her clientele. How do you rebrand without losing your mind and your client base? What made Heather decide she wanted to make the change to documentary photography and video? Read on to find out and be inspired! 6 Tips for a Successful Session At the heart of it all, I am a mom. I am busy, always pulled in 100 different directions, am forever watching our budget, and my family is my world. Here are my tips for not only a successful session but creating a great customer experience. Read more.
