Congratulations on being our featured photographer this month, Hannah! Please tell us a bit about yourself and how you became a professional photographer. Such an honor, thank you! I’d love to share a bit about myself. I am a midwestern girl married to a midwestern boy who I met on the first day of high school. We live in downtown Chicago and are loving city life! I have always loved working with children which lead me to pursue master’s degrees in Child Development and Social Work. After grad school, I lived in Miami and began building my photography portfolio. At this point it was just a hobby. I was charging $50 for sessions on Miami Beach, and I could not believe people were actually paying me for something I thought was fun (ha!). Chicago called us back, and it was here where I struggled (like really struggled) to find a social work job and started to focus on my photography business as a source of income. After a while I had the realization that my hobby could actually become my profession and I officially opened Hannah Drews Photography in 2013. It has been a whirlwind ever since! Your editing style is understated yet strikingly beautiful. What is your favorite editing tool; will you share an editing tip or two? Wow, such a compliment! I do the majority of my editing in Lightroom and then send images over to Photoshop for final edits. I run the same custom preset on every single photo and have it tweaked slightly for each session type: outdoor, studio, lifestyle, and hospital. During

12 | NAPCP Inspired Magazine November 2017

the editing process, my main goals are to make my whites white and skin tones natural and I am in a constant battle with the HSL sliders. I also run Portraiture on every image which I think adds a little finishing touch to portraits and makes skin look amazing without losing texture. It took a long time to make a preset that could translate to different sessions but I finally feel like my work looks cohesive across the board. You have been focusing on Fresh 48 sessions and recently launched a workshop. We love it! Why did you choose to take your business in this direction? I mean, is there anything sweeter than a brand new baby? This year I really wanted to create an online workshop for photographers and narrowed it down to what I am most passionate about. I also felt like there was a gap in the market and it was the perfect time to release a Fresh 48 guide. When I completed the guide, I did not know of a single other online workshop focusing solely on Fresh 48s. It felt like the perfect opportunity to share my passion and help other photographers along the way. It is terrifying to put everything you know out there into the world and hope that someone, anyone, finds it helpful. I have had really positive feedback so far which has been extremely gratifying. I absolutely love everything about Fresh 48 sessions. I feel that when a photographer shoots from the heart some magical things can happen; Fresh 48s definitely have my heart.

Where do you see yourself and your photography business in 5 years? If I was asked this question five years ago, I would not have mentioned anything about owning a photography business. Crazy how life happens! Five years from now I hope to have a baby or two of my own, who will likely hate having their photos taken. I would really love to get back into social work in some capacity, possibly finding a way to marry photography and non profit work. My husband and I will likely move out of Chicago in the next few years, which means I will have to start over in a new city. A bit scary, but exciting at the same time.

Thank you so much, Hannah!

Three Tips FOR FRESH 48 SESSIONS by Hannah Drews Eggert

1- Prep your clients. - If this is your first go with Fresh 48 sessions, your clients may be unfamiliar with what to expect. You don’t want to show up for a hospital session and be greeted by a client with props and outfits expecting a posed newborn session. Here are a few lines from my prep email; “I am here to document your first day with your new baby so you don’t have to! I’ll capture everything from the snuggles to the struggles. This may include baby’s first bath, meeting big sister, cuddling with dad, or quiet nursing moments.” I also like to send inquiries an example gallery from a blog post so there are no questions about the documentary style of the session.

2- Turn off the lights. - Hospitals are notorious for bad lighting. The first thing I do when I walk into a hospital room is open the blinds and turn off every single light in the room. Even if the room only has one small window, I will park my clients as close to the natural light source as possible. I may do the entire session in that small area which can be a fun challenge to create a diverse gallery. It is much easier to edit a session with a little grain from high ISOs than a session with mixed natural+fluorescent lighting so make sure those overhead lights are off!

3- Go with the flow. - Every single Fresh 48 session has been interrupted by hospital staff (sometimes 3-4 times) so you have to be flexible. The nurse may come in for vitals, baby may need to do a hearing test, pediatrician may come by for a check, all of which are out of your control and you have to roll with it. I have an idea of 10 or so images that I love capturing but one of my favorite parts of Fresh 48s is that they are so unpredictable and every single session is new. It really keeps every session feeling “fresh”. If you are able to relax and let the moments happen naturally, you can capture some amazing emotion-provoking images.

Photographing Children Through Their Eyes: 5 Ways to Evoke Childlike Whimsy in Your Child Photography

As child photographers, and in dealing with children on a regular basis, I think we all feel the fascination with this stage of human life!

There is nothing more truthful than children and their imaginations. In childhood everything is true, as dream and reality merge themselves and are one! The world through the eyes of a child is always a new place … colorful, surprising, and unexpected. This is the world in which we all should live!

I’ve always been curious about how children see the world, and my background in psychology helped me to gain better insight into the fragmented and borderless way in which the child exists in the world.

For this reason, when I started photographing children, I soon felt the need to bring to my photos this magical way of seeing and being in the world, as if an image was photographed by the child’s own eyes! Read more.

Meet Ricardo Silva:

Family and children Photographer based in Portugal. Always fascinated by

Photography, the passion grew up increasingly when my first child was born in 2010. 3 years later i decided to devote myself professionally to photography and i’m loving it!

Re-Branding to Fit Your Passion As an organization dedicated to passionate artists, we at NAPCP can certainly relate to the fluid aspects of art — including and especially photography. NAPCP member Heather Floyd, of Floyd Family Photography, decided last year that portrait photography was no longer primarily what she wanted to give her clientele. How do you rebrand without losing your mind and your client base? What made Heather decide she wanted to make the change to documentary photography and video? Read on to find out and be inspired! Read more.

Meet Heather Floyd: Heather is a storyteller offering documentary style photos and films to her clients in Northern California.

A Guide to Shooting In-Home Lifestyle Sessions In-home sessions are among my favourite type of session to do. No two are alike and each has their own pace and challenges (especially when siblings are involved!). Even with an over the phone consultation, talking with a client about areas in the home they think will work best, and scheduling best as possible around toddlers, you’re still walking into an entirely unfamiliar territory.

I started this session off by spending some off-camera time with this shy big sis, hearing about all her favourite toys and what she learned at gymnastics that week. Once she was suitably sure that I was alright, she led me upstairs to meet her new baby brother. Read more.

Meet Natalie Balen-Cinelli: Natalie is an Ontario natural light photographer who loves to work with neutrals and soft pops of color. Whether shooting indoors or out, she strives to make each session as unique as the family she’s photographing.
