featuring

the wonderful Laura Winslow of Laura Winslow Photography

Inside

a special look at Totally Rad's new product, Replichrome

Hello friends!

Apple picking, pumpkin carving and Halloween decorating – these are a few of our

favorite things during the fall season! The leaves are changing, the temperatures are dropping and we’re gearing up for the busiest - and most exciting - time of the year! The holidays are just around the corner and we’re doing everything we can to make sure we capture all those magical moments. Our dear friend Laura Winslow, is our October Featured Photographer. As a photographer who loves Starbucks, 80s music, traveling and reading a good book on a rainy day, she’s a woman after our own heart. She specializes in maternity, newborns, children engagements, high school seniors and families – and she never wants to miss a moment! She absolutely loves capturing images and turning them into colorful, modern and fun photos to be treasured forever. Laura has been featured on HGTV, in Real Simple and many other publications – and constantly continues to inspire us.

This month, we’re jazzed about Totally Rad’s Replichrome. Born from the desire to

make truly accurate and authentic film, Replichrome combines systematic research with cutting-edge image science to offer the most faithful film emulation available. It works flawlessly and beautifully with digital photos. Be sure to keep up with us this month – we’ll be offering a special giveaway!

Finally, our latest Video Interview Series launched earlier this month with Co-Founder

Alice Park as she chatted about Studio Policies. We encourage you to check this out – especially during this busy time of year!

We hope you find yourself falling into everything wonderful October brings - and

capturing each step along the way. Bundle up, hit the pumpkin patch and have fun with those little ghouls and goblins who happen to emerge later this month!

Sincerely

The NAPCP Team

Tell us your story. How you started and how your photography, brand, and business transformed over the last few years? My life is a varied one, and though I have always been interested in photography (I would pose my dolls and little sister all.the.time), my photography career was not how I began. I majored in World Politics and Spanish in college, and interned on Capitol Hill and with the U.S. Department of State. I've moved 17 times, so travel is in my blood--my goal was to become a Foreign Service Officer with the State Department, but life sometimes takes us on a wonderful unplanned ride. I taught high school Spanish for 7 years prior to becoming a mother. When our son was born very sick, he was unable to be around other children, so I stayed home with him. Around that time, my husband gifted me with my first DSLR and I spent my days practicing on my son, much like countless other photographers. 09 | NAPCP

My style of photography--modern, fresh and colorful, is definitely a reflection of who I am. I see the world in color and try to infuse that into my photography. I very much appreciate black and white imagery, but I instantly see in layers of colors and tones. I have always been interested in photographing children, but the minute that I started photographing what I wanted and how I wanted is when my business took off. I think when you are true to yourself, potential clients can see themselves in your and your work and will instantly be drawn to it. Who or what inspires you and your work? How? I am inspired by everyday life and objects--by colored murals on a city wall, the shape of a building, the texture of an old wooden door, the vibrancy NAPCP

of fresh lemons or a juicy watermelon, but most importantly I am inspired by those that are in front of my lens. I love to try to reveal the innocence and sweetness and tenderness and incredible curiosity of the children I photograph. It is such a fleeting, amazing time and I want my clients to really be transported back to that space in their child's life by looking back on the images I create for them. What is one business lesson you wish you learned a long time ago? Learn to say no. As a people-pleaser and ambitious person, I always start out thinking I can do it all. Don't be afraid to ask for help or to say no to those things that may be fun and beneficial to your business but that take away from your personal life and your children. I'm still working on these, though I have gotten infinitely better than I used to be. 11 | NAPCP

What is the best advice you have received regarding photography? One of the best pieces of advice might be the most simple--always pay attention to your subject's eyes. Look for the light in them, position them in a way so that the catch-lights are shining, but also look into their eyes to see THEM, so you can really honor who they are in your photography. Who are your favorite vendors? I have so many fabulous vendors that very much enhance the service that I give my clients--among them are MpixPro and Miller's Professional Imaging, HB Photo Packaging and StickyAlbums. I rely on these incredible companies for their quality and professionalism, and it just makes it that much better that each of them have amazing people behind them.

Your style is very unique, yet spontaneous and natural. Can you tell us how you approach your sessions and capture your subjects so beautifully? Thank you! I love to make my sessions fun and to create images organically-let my clients laugh and interact and tickle and just to be themselves. I do this by developing a relationship with my clients ahead of time, of getting to know a little about them and their family. By the time we have our session, I know anything of importance that mom has chosen to share with me, I know names, favorite things they like to do and sometimes even the name of the lovey I have asked them to bring with them. During our session, I gently direct when I see the need, but when it comes to children, often I make it my mission to follow their lead. I'm definitely not above a good tooting noise or two, though! How do you balance photography, your beautiful family, and your teaching? Truthfully, I am not sure that balance in the truest sense can ever really exist. Instead, you must find what balance means to you--that might mean that because your child is in a new phase your balance shifts to accommodate that. It is always and forever changing as your children and life and business changes. The important thing is to bend with the change and not be resistant to it. A few years ago I was a speaker at a conference where Becky Higgins, creator of Project Life, was also a speaker. Something she said really touched me and is always in the back of my mind. I feel it is an excellent reminder for any businesswoman and mother as to what we all know is the most important (but often forget). Becky told the story of a friend of hers. The woman's son showed her a picture that he had drawn at school. The assignment was to draw a picture of their mother. The picture that the little boy drew was of the back of his mother's head, sitting at the computer. What advice can you give to those starting out? Try your best not to constantly compare yourself to others. Be true to yourself, be confident in yourself while still realizing that it is a constant evolving of your art and your work. Your style will become evident once you begin not to follow what others are doing but what you love, what draws you in and makes you happy. Put out there into the world the amazing way you and only you see it. It is from there that amazing things truly can happen.

Where do you see your life 5 years from now? Five years from now, I see myself as a mother trying to create the very best experience and life for her children but striving to put them first. I see a further deepening of client relationships as their children and families grow, and I see increased opportunities for sharing with other photographers through workshops and mentoring.

Thank you so much Laura!

1) I love my Epiphanie bags - this is my mustard Lola, sunnie. Yep, sometimes I name my bags. I also adore my turquoise Brooklyn for when I travel for sessions or workshops. I love that it fits so much and is also a backpack. Perfect for plane travel and travel within cities. 2) My super fab Canon 5D Mark II. I began as a Nikon girl, but fell in love with the lens options for Canons. Both Nikon and Canon are amazing, obviously, but I find Canon to be the perfect fit for me. 3) My lighting gear really is almost nonexistent. I have two Canon 580 EX II Speedlights but rarely use them, honestly. I much prefer natural light as I am often chasing kiddos in changing light and must be ultra fast in my shooting. I also own reflectors but generally use them for primarily

only for commercial shoots. When I photograph families and children, I am most often shooting alone (I have a fabulous assistant/friend for mini sessions and she is incredible with a reflector!), so I don't have time for a reflector with fast kiddos. When I do use my external flash, I need batteries that are of very high quality so that they recycle quickly. I carry a battery charger for long shoots for this reason. 4) My favorite lens is my Canon 50 1.2L. I adore the dreaminess it produces and am rather spoiled with it. 5) I love my Ivy and A camera strap--I try to add pops of color anywhere I can! 6) I am sure to carry a few small canvas bags from Sweet Sugar Beet in fun patterns for memory cards, lens caps and various accessories.
