Natural Awakenings: As a local Sarasota business, how have you experienced community support over the years—especially in the difficulties of 2020?

Tony Gillette: Our customers love this store. As my wife often points out, “Elysian Fields is a strong entity,” and we are the keepers of this entity. Over the years, Elysian Fields has come to be known as a place of solace for our customers and the community as a whole. Some visit our store to take in the environment, while some are in search of a special gift, and others are looking for modalities to heal. 2020 has been a challenge for us, but our customers give us hope. From California to New York and every state in between, our customers find a way to connect with us. Two years ago, we started a robust ecommerce business, and our intuitive readers have a following that is unrivaled in Sarasota and beyond.

NA: What precautions are you taking in order to protect both your customers and staff members during this COVID-19 pandemic?

‘Tis the Season for Metaphysical Inspiration: Q&A with Elysian Fields by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

hen I began to ponder the subject for this month’s “Community Spotlight” article, what immediately surfaced was just how draining 2020 has been on the mind, body and soul— and how we could all use some inspiration to guide us into the home stretch of this monumental year. Not much feels normal or predictable these days, but one constant we can still depend on to lift our spirits and unite our communities is the holiday season. This is a time of renewal, hope, love, warmth and connection—to gather around tables (from a safe distance, of course) and share in the possibilities of another year on the horizon. For many, it’s a season that takes on intrinsic spiritual meaning, and it fills us with the anticipation of brighter days to come. For that reason, I wanted the last “Community Spotlight” of 2020 to focus on a business that is delivering both holiday cheer and spiritual resurgence to the local community when we all need it most. This leads me to Elysian Fields, a metaphysical retreat, known as “Sarasota’s favorite destination for inspiration” since 1991. So enjoy the following conversation with Tony Gillette who co-owns Elysian Fields, along with his wife and business partner Ruta, then be sure to visit the store for an assortment of gifts as unique as the people on your list. 16

Gillette: We follow the CDC guidelines for health and safety. To this end, all high-touch surfaces are cleaned throughout the day, and our staff members wash their hands frequently. In addition, all employees must wear either a mask or a face shield, and plexiglass barriers are installed at each of our registers.

NA: Will you offer any retail incentives this month in celebration of the holidays, and if so, what might these specials, discounts or festivities entail?

Gillette: Elysian Fields is planning three events in December that we are particularly excited about. The first is our “Sip, Shop and Support SPARCC” evening on December 3, 6:30–8:30 p.m. 10 percent of all the profits raised from this event, along with any other donations received, will directly support the local organiza-
