BEAUTIFICATION DAY MARCH 24 & 25

The Parks & Recreation and Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful Committee, in cooperation with the Nassau Bay Garden Club held it’s annual Beautification day on March 24th and 25th!

The two Committees supported the Garden Club by providing volunteers and supplies for the five Garden Club Gardens (Tranquility, Reflection, Circle Garden on Upper Bay, the two entrance gardens to Nassau Bay, and Butterfly Garden in Swan Lagoon). In addition, the planters on Upper Bay Drive, Founders Park, David Braun Park, and several beds in Howard Ward Park and Swan Lagoon Park also received new spring flowers. The Parks and Recreation Committee expanded the event to 2 days to accommodate over 100 volunteers to help with projects like painting the white wall on Point Lookout Drive, painting the median curbs yellow, refreshing ‘Nassau Bay’ sign flowers and adding flowers to the median on Bal Harbour Drive. On Saturday, March 25th there was a bounce house, snow cones, and pizza for the volunteers and their children. A BIG thank you to the Garden Club, Parks and Recreation Committee, and Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful Committee for all their hard work!

GARDEN CLUB UPCOMING EVENTS

The Nassau Bay Garden Club will hear about using native plants for pollinator gardens. Speakers Patty Steinke and Virginia Pierson have been members of the local Native Plant Society since the mid 2000s where they have both served as officers.

The Audbon Society defines a native plant as one that was naturally found in a particular area before European colonization. Native plants are the foundation of a region’s biodiversity, providing essential food sources and shelter for birds, especially those threatened by the changing climate. Since native plants are adapted to local precipitation and soil conditions, they generally require less upkeep, therefore helping the environment and saving you time, water, and money. The key to getting started is picking the right plants for your area

The monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with social time followed by the program and business meeting. The meetings are held at the City Hall Chambers at 1800 Space Park Drive, Nassau Bay.

The Nassau Bay Garden Club Style Show and Luncheon will host it biennial event at 11 a.m. May 12 at the Lakewood Yacht Club. The “Fashions by the Bay” event will include lunch in a coastal setting with Garden Club and leading community members modeling spring and summer fashions, announced Rhonda David and Royce Walker, co-chairs of the event.

The event is the single fundraiser for the club that provides countless philanthropy projects for Nassau Bay and surrounding communities, including scholarships for students studying horticulture, design and maintenance of six gardens, the sponsorship of the junior gardens of Robinson Elementary and St .Thomas Episcopal schools, Beautification Day, Arbor Day, monthly speakers on conservation, preservation, gardening and general education programs. The Clothes Horse Boutique, located in the historic district of League City, will provide the fashions. The event also includes silent and live auctions.

Tickets are $65 each. To secure tickets, contact Gun Frame at 281-486-5700 or agframe@comcast.net. For additional information, contact Royce Walker at rwalkeus@yahoo.com. They are accepting reservations and payment for the luncheon.
