GARDEN CLUB NEWS

A Child's Thoughts on Beautification Day Nassau Bay's special day where citizens come out together to spruce up the city for Fall. Ok, Ok you say. I don't garden, I make plants droop and wither. Let others do the sprucing. In the hustle and bustle of today's world, we often do things, never dreaming about the impact we could have. My granddaughters came with me to help with Beautification Day. We had fun using tiny shovels (trowels) digging and squealing when worms were unearthed (was I the loudest screamer??) All in all it was a lovely day. Fast forward to the following August when school started and my granddaughter was interested in joining Mossman Elementary's Garden Club. It seems children try out by writing compositions about why they should be a member. Jules wrote all about what she perceived as Nassau Bay's most important day - Beautification Day. She went into great detail of how all kinds of people met together laughing and talking and then worked together using various tools. The composition went on to tell what fun she had learning to dig holes and plop little plants in along side her Nanie and her neighbors. Jules was invited to join the after school club and showed up to school that day proudly wearing her Nassau Bay Beautification Day shirt! Beautification Day, what could it mean for someone you know? Stay tuned, event details and volunteer sign-up information will be in an upcoming newsletter. The Garden Club's monthly meetings will resume in September. Save the date, we hope to see you on September 13th at 9:30am for the social before the program and meeting begins at 10:00am at City Hall. Learn more about the Nassau Bay Garden Club at www.nassaubaygc.org.

Tony entered the fire service as a volunteer firefighter in 1989. In addition to his part-time employment at Nassau Bay, he has been a full-time firefighter with the City of Houston for 22 years, currently holding the rank of District Fire Chief assigned to Station 7 in the Downtown area. Over the years he has obtained multiple certifications in the Fire, EMS and Police disciplines. He does not have much time for leisure activities due to his work schedule but when he does have time he spends every possible moment with his children.

PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS Street Pothole Repair Program Have you noticed a smoother ride on the streets? That is due to the hard work and efficient approach of Field Operator II James Green. James works on filling the potholes in between major projects and over the past two months has applied over 2,000 pounds of asphalt patch to potholes around the city! The city promotes health through bicycling and walking. Public Works would like to make sure the streets are free of potholes. Street Supervisor Scott Kline is extremely pleased with James' approach to eliminating potholes and his dedication to the Pothole Repair Program. If you see James on the streets repairing potholes, be sure to give him a big thanks! Lake Nassau Restroom Remodel Complete On July 4th, Public Works Director Paul Lopez unlocked the gates and opened the remodeled restrooms at Lake Nassau Park. This Capital Improvement Project was completed on-schedule and received many compliments during the 4th of July celebration. The old restrooms had out-dated equipment and held water inside during rain events. Street Supervisor Scott Kline, Parks Supervisor Raul Lozoya and their crews installed a new drainage system, toilets, sinks, urinals, stall dividers, plumbing, and electrical upgrades to include a new hand dryer. The entire interior including the floors was BEFORE repainted. The entire project was completed by Public Works Staff and was a tremendous cost savings to the residents and great improvement to the park. AFTER

STREET PARKING

In June, the Parking Task Force, a group of residents and councilmembers, researched and evaluated street parking throughout Nassau Bay. They presented their findings along with their proposed parking solution at the July City Council Meeting. The suggested parking solution was to implement an overnight street parking ban from 2:00-4:00am that garnered support and opposition from both residents and business-owners. The City Council responded to the feedback by assigning City staff the task of researching and developing multiple solutions that would address the parking concerns and issues. Once completed, staff would present their recommendations along with the task force’s proposal to City Council for review. City staff is in the planning and research phase and will ensure citizens are included in the process by hosting two public input sessions. The first session will be held on Wednesday, August 24th from 2:008:00pm at City Hall. The data gathered in August will be transformed to proposals that citizens can vote on at the second session on Wednesday, September 21st at City Hall. All research and proposals will be presented to City Council on October 10th. Detailed information associated with this project will be available on the City’s website - www.nassaubay. com. We look forward to hearing from and working with the citizens of Nassau Bay as the project advances.
