FEATURED IN LOCAL FILM
A Nassau Bay resident, Bo Brinkman (famous for the films “Gettysburg” / “Gods and Generals”), wrote and directed the movie “Last Man Club,” which is currently available on Digital HD and DVD. The "Last Man Club" is a heartwarming, All-American road trip adventure movie. Several scenes were filmed right here in the heart of Nassau Bay. A featured home on Point Lookout Drive was the same house used in Bo’s 2002 short film by the same name. A special wiring for lighting was still in place in the garage where the scene was filmed. Gloria Dei Lutheran Church played a major role as the VA hospital for "Last Man Club." The church allowed the crew to setup their base camp and store equipment on the premises. Residents might remember seeing some of the filming in the Dollar General parking lot, located across from the Nassau Bay Post Office. Bo had help from a former Nassau Bay resident and current Nassau Bay small business owner, Linda Pandolph. Bo and Linda joined forces to produce this film that took 20 years from script to screen. The production hopes to film another movie in this area soon. “Nassau Bay is such a wonderful diverse community and the people are very friendly,” said Brinkman. “We will be back." Last Man Club has received 22 Film Festival Awards including 9 for best featured film. For more information, visit www.thelastmanclub.com.

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB For the Air Conditioner Gardener: The summer heat can make it difficult for outside gardening. Cultivating indoor herbs can be a great way to utilize your green thumb and avoid the hot sun. Fresh herbs can be grown in the cool of indoors which is perfect for Nassau Bay gardeners this time of year! They also lend so many flavors to your foods. To plant inside, individual pots or a small window box pot may be used in a window that has a strong southern light. This means that direct sunlight is not necessary, just bright sunlight in any room. Herbs that grow easily in the home are: • Rosemary - this plant grows well inside and is delicious in many recipes such as pasta, seafood and veggies. • Basil - the taste is mesmerizing in many foods. Basil needs bright sun, but is easy to grow. • Bay - plant alone in a pot as it needs good air circulation. Bay is used in soups and many Mediterranean dishes. Leaves need to be removed before food is served. Flavor is enhanced by drying the leaves. • Parsley - this plant is more than a decorative green because a few sprigs can do wonders for your soup and pasta dishes by adding just the right flavor. Because it roots deep, plant parsley deep in the pots. • Oregano - a Mediterranean plant that is best friends with tomato soups and sauces. Oregano is easy to grow so there is no need to buy at the grocery store. • Lavender - a favorite of many gardeners because of its wonderful scent. Lavender can be added to any food. This plant can grow up to two feet, so it may need to be moved outdoors in bright light (but protected from the harsh west sun). Lavender likes to be tickled so run your hands through it and enjoy the scent.
Water all herbs thoroughly about every 3 days. Wait until the soil is dry before watering again. Overwatering is the number one killer of plants. If plants are in the kitchen, humidity will help them flourish. Growing your own herbs is a rewarding hobby and it keeps you from constantly buying them at the grocery store. Most of all, it gives your dishes an extra special touch! Be sure to take time to enjoy your inside and outside gardens - Happy Gardening! Nassau Bay Garden Club is on a summer break. Please join us Tuesday, September 12, 2017 for a 9:30am Social and 10:00am Program at City Hall.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION Upper Bay & Space Park: Construction on the new Fire & EMS building is underway. As part of the construction, the outside lane of Upper Bay Road, as it approaches Space Park Drive, is now closed. This leaves one lane from the edge of the Fire & EMS Building construction site to the intersection. Additionally, eastbound lanes of Space Park Drive from Upper Bay Road to the Dollar General parking lot entrance are closed. Closures will remain in effect until June 2018 (with the completion of the Fire & EMS building). Water, Wastewater & Drainage Improvements: Lopez Utilities Contractor, LLC will be commencing work to replace the existing sewer lines in Nassau Bay. The types of work that will be performed during the course of the construction include cleaning and televising of sanitary sewers, rehabilitation and testing of sanitary sewers, and site restoration. Chick-fil-A: Construction at Chick-fil-A will begin on July 31st, with the restaurant expected to be completed within 120 days.

WATER CONSERVATION
DOG PARK ETIQUETTE
During hot and dry months it is important to practice water conservation, but these conservation tips are great to put into use year-round in an effort to waste less water.
If you are new to off-leash parks, check out these dog park etiquette tips to learn how you and your dog can get the most out of the Nassau Bay Dog Park (located in David Braun Park).
• Fix leaky faucets and toilets. • Install aerators to cut in half the amount of water used by each faucet. • Install a water-efficient shower head. • Take shorter showers. • Replace older toilets with water-efficient models. • Water your yard thoroughly, but only as needed, usually no more than one inch, once a week. • Water lawns in the early morning or late evening. • Position sprinklers so that they are not watering driveways and walkways. • Use drip irrigation for plants and gardens, water early in the morning to minimize evaporation. • Collect and use rainwater for lawn and garden. • Wash only full loads of laundry. • Invest in Energy Star-qualified clothes washer. For more information, visit www.takecareoftexas.org
Before you go, make sure your dog... • Is up-to-date on vaccines. Ask your vet if your puppy is old enough to participate too. • Has met other dogs and generally gets along with new dogs and people. • Knows basic commands and will come to you when called. • Is spayed / neutered. When you get to the park... • Pay attention to your dog. Socialize with other dogs and owners, but always make sure you keep a close eye on your dog's location and behavior. • Bring plenty of waste bags and pick up after your pup every time. Your dog park reputation depends on it! • Leave your dog's toys at home. Toys may cause unwanted competition between dogs. • Watch for signs that your dog is getting tired or irritable. This means it's time to go home. • Don't take small children with you. Other dogs may not respond well to young kids. The Nassau Bay Dog Park has separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. Use of the dog park is at your own risk. Please abide by the dog park rules to ensure the safety of you, your dog, and others visiting the park. For more information, visit our website at www.nassaubay.com/dogpark. For dog park information, call 281-333-4211.
