NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB
Message by Nassau Bay Garden Club President Betty Armstrong Here are the Top Five Reasons the gardener in me loves Nassau Bay: (1) Trees – Nassau Bay has a wide variety of beautiful, mature trees. From palms to pines, we live in an urban forest with a shady canopy. (2) Shade Gardens – I love to see the impatiens, gladiolas, and gingers growing under the shade. (3) Four Seasons of Beauty – The arabesque of the bare deciduous trees against a blue winter sky, redbuds and fruit tree blooms in the spring, crepe myrtles heavy with blooms, defying our hot summers with a bounty of color, and fall which comes late, but gives us a burnish of oranges and browns. (4) The Nassau Bay Garden Club – The Club has taught me so much about plants, beneficial insects, environmental issues, and more. Most importantly, the Club has also allowed me to meet good friends! (5) Our Residents, Our Town and the Garden Club – These groups of people don't let bad boys Ike, Harvey, and the cold North Wind defeat us as we get out and trim, replant, and renew our many gardens. April 10th Garden Club Social & Program: Join the Garden Club on Tuesday, April 10th in the City Hall Council Chambers for their "Galveston Bay and You" Program. Social begins at 9:30am, with Program at 10:00am. Check out the Garden Club at www.nassaubaygc.org or on Facebook at @NassauBayGardenClub.
VETERANJohn RECEIVES MEDALS Jerrell Nichols, Sr., a long-time
resident of Nassau Bay, has finally received his award medals after serving in World War II more than 70 years ago. U.S. Representative Brian Babin was notified Mr. Nichols never received his service medals and went straight to work to secure these long-awaited awards for him. These numerous medals include a Bronze Star, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (with two campaign stars), a Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon, and American Theatre Ribbon. Mr. Nichols met with Congressman Babin last month to personally receive his awards. Thank you for your service Mr. Nichols, and many thanks to Congressman Babin in ensuring his proper recognition.
A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Did you know the City of Nassau Bay is aggressively
working to mitigate storm water intrusion? Mechanisms are being established to replace old lines and upgrade the pump systems, all while inspecting lines, continual clearing of current ones, and monitoring the City during heavy rain incidents. In addition, the City is dredging Lake Nassau for the first time in the City's history, which also helps absorb water runoff. In the last major rain event, the City received almost three inches of rain in under two hours. Our current system allowed it to drain off in a few hours – a great outcome for our residents and the City!

YOUR $2 FIRE & EMS DONATIONS AT WORK The City of Nassau Bay Utility Department provides residents with the opportunity to make a voluntary $2.00 donation to the Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD) and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) with the payment of each water bill. Donations are used by these departments for tools, resources, and capital items to better provide emergency services to our residents. During the past year, the Volunteer Fire Department was able to use this money to replace the sonar on the Fire and Police Department's marine boat, as well as to purchase accessories for the EMS LUCAS chest compression system. Residents interested in donating to the NBVFD and EMS may simply add $2.00 to their payment when paying the “Total Due” amount on their water bill. Your donation may be considered a tax-deductible charitable donation because the City is a qualified entity and the donation is being used for a restricted public purpose. Please contact your tax professional for more information about tax deductible charitable donations. For more information about the NBVFD, please visit www.nassaubayfd.com.
NEW CITIZEN REQUEST SYSTEM The City of Nassau Bay wants YOU to be involved in helping to keep our
City a premier community! Beginning April 2nd, Nassau Bay will transition to IWorQ, a brand new service request program that allows residents to submit requests to the City via computer or smartphone. With IWorq, residents can submit various work requests, such as requesting a meter re-read, notifying the Animal Shelter of lost and found animals, reporting sewer odor and water leaks, just to name a few. After the request is sent, the City will be notified immediately, helping to streamline the process. IWorQ also gives residents the option of knowing when the work request is complete. We are very excited about this new system, especially knowing our residents will experience a new user friendly way of reporting problems and concerns around the City. Visit the City's website for more information on how to input work requests or download the IWorQ Service Request app on your smartphone today!
