ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE It’s a Great Day in Nassau Bay! We have what so many other cities long for. We have friendly people who know their neighbors, attractive open spaces, beautiful scenery, historic homes, parades and festivals. Nassau Bay possesses a sense of authenticity and charm that cannot be replicated in some of our neighboring cities. These inherent qualityof-life advantages, enhanced by community leadership, planning, and partnerships, is what can ultimately make our community more attractive to both existing and potential residents and employers. Acting as a catalyst, connector, and consensus-builder, City staff's work is not just focused on recruiting and retaining businesses, but rather community building. Over the last few months, Nassau Bay has welcomed Chickfil-A and Bucky’s, both located along NASA Rd 1. With the opening of these two businesses, nearly 100 new jobs were created, not to mention the sales tax being generated. The use of the sales tax for economic development purposes has been one of the most popular and effective tools used by cities to promote economic development. Recently, Transitional Learning Center (TLC), one of the original comprehensive brain injury rehabilitation programs in the country, purchased 1275 Space Park Drive with plans for a complete state-of-the-art renovation. TLC will bring another 85 jobs to Nassau Bay. Current 1275 Space Park Drive compared to TLC's architectural rendering

CITIZENS FOR SPACE ANNUAL TRIP Councilmember Ashley Graves traveled to Washington D.C. from May 15th to May 17th with the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership and the Citizens for Space Exploration. The mission of Citizens for Space Exploration (CSE) is to promote awareness of the benefits of America's Human Space Exploration Program and support for NASA. Representatives from CSE meet annually with Congressional members and staff to educate lawmakers about how space exploration affects us and our community. During this 27th annual trip, the group made 396 congressional visits, including 77% of House offices and 70% of Senate offices. A Congressional reception was held on May 16th and was well attended by over 70 staffers and 5 members of Congress. Ms. Graves was one of the 91 travelers representing 26 states – the diverse group of travelers included elected officials, students, industry representatives, and community leaders. Many thanks to Ashley for representing the City!
We can hardly mention renovation without giving a shout out to Methodist St. John. Over the past several months the hospital has invested in a complete renovation of the Labor and Delivery area and the MRI area...and we hope you have noticed the big M! All sectors of the economy play an important role in making a stable and long running development plan. Tourism is one of the sectors which plays an important role in development and also generates revenue for the City coffers. To further strengthen the City’s economic development efforts, Nassau Bay continues to partner with Bay Area Houston CVB, which provides expansive marketing efforts around the state and internationally. Nassau Bay’s waterfront, historic space connection, wildlife park and trail, and birding opportunities give visitors plenty to do when they visit. A visitor's fun vacation provides economic support and additional capital investment. Currently, City staff is in conversations with multiple individuals/companies/developers interested in Nassau Bay. Several vacant or undeveloped properties are either recently purchased, under contract to purchase, or in negotiations to purchase. Since economic development is competitive, until a deal is done, it is not good business to discuss specifics. Just know that great things are on the horizon. Stay tuned…

AWARD WINNING BUDGET The City of Nassau Bay has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the sixth consecutive year by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). In order to receive this award, a governmental unit must publish a budget document that meets nationally recognized guidelines as a policy document, operations guide, financial plan, and communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting. Congrats to all City staff and the Nassau Bay Finance Department – Finance Director Csilla Ludanyi, Senior Accountant & Internal Auditor Jaime Vasquez, Accountant Julia Mendoza, Municipal Court Administrator Catrina Maxwell, and Utility Billing Coordinator Cyndi Martinez.
HONORING OUTGOING COUNCILMEMBERS At the June 11th City Council meeting, Mayor Mark Denman presented outgoing Mayor Pro Tem / Councilmember Dr. Sandra Mossman and Councilmember Bob Warters with Keys to the City for their dedicated service to the City. Additionally, two trees have been installed in Howard Ward Park in honor of their eight years of service. Former Mayor Pro Tem Mossman: It was an honor to serve as a member of the Nassau Bay City Council and work with City Manager Jason Reynolds and his excellent administrative staff. My best wishes to incoming council members, Ashley Graves and Matt Prior. Former Councilmember Warters: I have been honored to serve on the Nassau Bay City Council for the past eight years. I will continue to serve on two committees and I plan to run for another council seat in 2019. I am proud that several of my initial goals have been accomplished: emergency generator for the sewer plant, enhanced capacity for the sewer plant, and a program to replace our crumbling water and sewer pipes. Thanks to the citizens of Nassau Bay who have given me the opportunity to serve.
NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB
Junior Master Gardeners: The Nassau Bay Garden Club was recently invited to participate and learn more about the work of the Junior Master Gardeners at G.W. Robinson Elementary. Open to 4th and 5th graders, the Junior Master Gardeners meet twice a month during the school year to learn about the plant cycle and various aspects of gardening. The Nassau Bay Garden Club donated $200.00 to help with their gardening expenses. After Hurricane Harvey, the Junior Master Gardeners experienced first hand the devastation brought to their school yard and diligently worked on replanting their crops of broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, raddishes and peppers. In the Spring, the students also worked very hard to raise the beds by working in compost and new soil. Garden Club members Joyce Mayor, Ann Gay, Pris Fletcher and Nancee Lynn accepted the invitation to view their harvest first hand. After visiting, Club members were impressed with the students' involvement and excitement about their gardens! Post Note: The students highlighted a special coach who waters and tends to the gardens during school holidays and summer vacation – the Garden Club thanks him for going above and beyond for the Junior Master Gardeners!
Summer Gardening Tips: Keep beds mulched with 3” to 4” hardwood mulch, not colored mulch. Try watering for longer periods of time every other day, rather than every day for short periods of time. Do not water a drooping plant in the afternoon sun. Most likely the plant is trying to shield its leaves from the intense sun. Give it time to revive after the sun is not shining on it. Overwatering a plant will kill it faster than a drought. To keep flowering plants, bushes, and even grass strong, feed it microlife (the Public Works Department sells a large bag for $25.00). This organic matter will keep everything in your yard healthy throughout this heat. In the late evenings take a walk through the Garden Club gardens to see which of the plants are doing well. If you want to know what kind of plant it is, simply take a photo and email to info@nassaubaygc.org – Club members will be more than happy to answer any questions. Happy Gardening!

STREET SALES TAX ELECTION
On the November 2018 ballot, Nassau Bay residents will be asked to reauthorize the 1/4 cent sales tax allocation dedicated for street repairs. Following first approval by voters in 2002, City Council formed a Street Task Force to identify needed street projects throughout the City. State law requires this optional tax be approved by the voters every four years, and in 2014 Nassau Bay residents overwhelmingly approved its renewal, with 90% of voters casting a ballot in favor of the street sales tax. Since the City of Nassau Bay has been collecting the street tax, the City has made great strides in improving the overall condition of the City's streets. Should you have questions regarding this optional tax, please contact City Secretary Sandra Ham at 281-333-4211, who will put you in touch with one of the members of the Street Task Force.
