GOODBYE WINTER, WELCOME SPRING

The first day of Spring is March 20, 2018 and the City of Nassau Bay is ready to welcome more hours of sunlight, blooming flowers and springtime decor! There are several upcoming family-friendly events happening around the City to help you enjoy the weather and welcome Spring!

BEAUTIFICATION DAY

Saturday, March 24th at 8:00am In 1976 the tradition of Beautification Day began. Individuals, families, young, and old – come by yourself or bring anyone who loves to garden – are invited to help in this once a year beautification project. The Garden Club has supported this endeavor through the years. Join us at 8:00am at the pavillion at David Braun Park (18900 Upper Bay Rd). Coffee and a light breakfast will be served. Hurricane Harvey and several ice and snow days wreaked havoc on the plants throughout the City. Volunteers on Beautification Day clean up the City's 43 maintained gardens (which include esplanades). This volunteer event is also a great way to meet your Nassau Bay neighbors and support the City. Any amount of time helping to keep our City beautiful is greatly appreciated. NEW this year is the Beautification Day Vintage T-shirt Contest! Dig through your closets and wear the oldest Beautification Day t-shirt you have! A prize will be awarded to the winner.

SPRING FORWARD REMINDER

We will "Spring Forward" on Sunday, March 11th – don't forget to set your clocks one hour forward on Sunday. Additionally, this is a great time of year to check your smoke and CO detectors and replace their batteries! It is recommended to replace the batteries at least twice a year, so doing this at the start and end of Daylight Saving Time is a good homeowner habit.

EASTER IN THE PARK

Saturday, March 25th at 2:00pm Join the Nassau Bay Special Events Committee on Sunday, March 25th at 2:00pm for the annual Nassau Bay Easter Egg Hunt! In addition, enjoy photo board selfies and pictures with the Easter Bunny. The egg hunt starts at 2:00pm sharp in David Braun Park. Get there early so you don't miss out!!!

PARTY ON THE SQUARE

Saturday, April 28th at 6:00pm Save the date! Get ready for a party at Town Square with great music and delicious food truck eats. A family-friendly event you won't want to miss!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT After acquiring his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, Roscoe Lee and his wife, Tuie, moved to Nassau Bay in 1967. As a NASA contractor, Roscoe supported the NASA Johnson Space Center in the Apollo, Apollo-Soyuz, Skylab, Space Shuttle, and International Space Station Programs until his retirement in July 2016. During his 49+ year span, Roscoe received numerous awards, including a Group Presidential Medal of Honor Award for his work during the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Mission. Roscoe began his volunteer work when he was appointed to the Planning Commission, under the sponsorship of Nassau Bay's first City Manager Howard Ward. Roscoe currently serves as Chairman of the Planning Commission and has served under every City Manager and Mayor. A significant accomplishment was the coordination and approval of the Fred Griffin application for a Planned Unit Development (PUD), which resulted in the development of Nassau Bay Town Square beginning in 2008. When asked why he continues to serve on the Commission, Roscoe jokingly responds "that the City doubles his salary every year". Roscoe is a charter member of the Parks Committee, for which he currently serves as Interim Chairman. In 1994, Roscoe worked with David Braun to raise funds for playground equipment in (now) David Braun Park, and also helped install the equipment with many other Nassau Bay residents. During his tenure on the Committee, he supported the development of comprehensive master plans for David Braun Park and Swan Lagoon Park. Roscoe has supported Beautification Day since Tuie, among others, initiated this program. He participated in the Galveston Bay Foundation planting of marsh grass on the shores of the Peninsula and works yearly on the annual peninsula clean-up. Since Hurricane Harvey, Roscoe, Tuie, and Justin volunteer to walk dogs from the Animal Shelter, resulting in their recent adoptions of Ziggy and Teddy. Roscoe and Tuie are proud to say that their sons, Jason and Justin were born and raised in Nassau Bay.

RAINY DAY MESSAGE

Flash flooding can occur anywhere, and unfortunately, Nassau Bay has several areas prone to street flooding. Residents are always encouraged to exercise caution in flood-prone areas and to remain aware of weather reports forecasting heavy rains. Additionally, we encourage residents to protect their vehicles during storms and potential street flooding. Take caution, lower your risk of damage, and find higher ground – such as your driveway – for your vehicles during flood events.
