RAIN BARREL WORKSHOP

Conserve water. Protect the Bay! Rain barrels are an efficient, low-cost, low-maintenance method for collecting rainwater. They are placed at downspouts (or downpours from your roof) in order to reduce runoff and flooding, conserve freshwater, and reduce pollution reaching Galveston Bay via storm drains. Rain barrels can be used for watering a garden or houseplants, washing a car, and much more! Admission: $35 (includes barrel & connector kit)

KEEP IT CLEAN

Due to continued complaints and reports of illegal boat sewage discharges from those in the boating community, we want to remind you to Pump Don't Dump to keep our bay fishable and swimmable. Sewage discharged from boats degrades water quality by introducing disease-causing bacteria into the environment and depressing oxygen levels as the sewage decays. This can result in fish kills and may make the water unsuitable for swimming and recreational use. It is illegal to discharge both treated and untreated sewage into Clear Lake and illegal to discharge untreated waste into Galveston Bay. In order to properly dispose of boater waste, you must use an approved pump-out device, station, or service. For more information and to locate pump-out facilities, please visit www.galvbay.org/boaterwaste.

GARDEN CLUB NEWS

Moonlight Gardens As a child we all have memories of playing games outside in the early evening. Hide & Seek and catching fireflies. Darting in and out of the shadows of bushes. Giggles galore! At some point we became aware of scents from plants. For me it was gardenias. I knew just where my friends were hiding! Now is the time to consider bringing back those special memories. Moon gardens can do just that by providing a great way to enjoy night blooming plants that give off wonderful aromas. White flowers and light-colored plants reflect moonlight and attract important pollinators to your yard. For strong fragrance; honeysuckle, confederate jasmine, gardenia, yesterday, today and tomorrow plant (similar to lilacs) and flowering tobacco. Create an alluring after-dark ambiance on a patio or deck with container plants that glow white under the stars.

THEATRE

Clear Creek Community Theatre on Upper Bay Road, would like to reassure patrons that they are open for business as usual and are not scheduled for demolition anytime soon! The last show of the Season will be the iconic musical: Little Shop of Horrors, running 26 May through 11 June. Tickets may be reserved at 281-335-5228 or bought online at www.clearcreekcommunitytheatre.com

UNDERGROUND UTILITY LINES

Our land is made up of a complex underground infrastructure of pipelines, wires and cables. Striking an underground utility line while digging can cause harm to you or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, and potentially result in fines and repair costs. You must call 811 to have the underground lines marked before every digging project, from simple landscaping projects like planting trees or shrubs, to building a deck or installing a rural mailbox.

Most summer gardens must be seen in the daylight for us to truly appreciate their beauty. But if you love to spend your summer nights outdoors, a moon garden can help you create an outdoor space that's just as enjoyable in the starlight as it is in the sunlight. Plants that can take the hot sun but yet shimmer at night are white angel trumpet, angelonia, Fountain grass-green with white flowing edges, white Mandevilla, Dusty Miller, white petunias and white impatients (partial sun to shade). New Guinea white impatients have dark green leaves that seem to disappear at night so the large white flowers look like they are floating. Summer brings on hot months, sometimes just too hot to really enjoy gardening. So now is the time to plan and plant. Bring back those fond memories by planting your own version of a moonlight garden. Happy Gardening! "Tip of the Garden Trowel" to Public Works Staff Paul, Raul, and Eddie for keeping our city fun and beautiful! The petunias in the esplanades look lovely. These men gingerly planted tiny flowers and then ever so gently spread mulch. Care and pride! They go above and beyond their job and we thank you!

HURRICANE SEASON: TIME TO PREPARE Those who were here for Ike need few reminders of the devastation, but regardless of how many storms you have lived and endured, it is always important to be prepared. Hurricanes like Ike emphasize the need for every citizen to have a well thought out personal and/or family plan and remember “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail.” The following are some basics that should be part of your plan: Protect from the Dangers of Inland Flooding • Protect Your Past - personal records and special items • Protect Your Present - BUY FLOOD INSURANCE! • Protect Your Peace of Mind - focus on planning & communications • Protect Yourself & Others - NEVER drive on flooded roads. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”

Plan ahead for where you will go and when you will leave. • Familiarize yourself with your children’s school and your workplace evacuation plans. • Learn how to shut off your utilities and know emergency numbers to call. • Protect your property, board up windows; secure outside furniture, etc.; secure boats, trailers and other items. • Perform an Inventory, make copies of important insurance documents (Property, Life, Health, etc) along with credit and ID cards. Make a video or take pictures of your property and belongings for insurance purposes. • Store important documents in a secure place away from home. • Keep some cash in a safe place that can easily be accessed during an evacuation. ATM’s are useless during power outages.

ISO RATING IMPROVED

The City of Nassau Bay has received an improved ISO Rating - from 5 to 4 for residential buildings and remained at 4 for commercial buildings The Insurance Service Office (ISO) evaluates all jurisdictions that have a building code enforcement departments using the Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule to evaluate the performance of the department on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being exemplary. The concept is simple: municipalities with well enforced, up-to-date codes should demonstrate better loss experiences and insurance rates can reflect that. The prospect of reducing losses and ultimately lowering insurance cost provides an incentive for communities to enforce building codes rigorously. By improving the rating, the building department has demonstrated a commitment to code enforcement. ISO provides the rating to insurers, who may use the evaluations in underwriting for property insurance in which can result in better insurance rates within the community.
