ANNUAL CITY BUDGET
At the Council Meeting held on September 17, 2018, the City Council approved the FY19 Annual Budget. This year’s General Fund (maintenance and operations) budget is $5,804,150 and the total budget for all funds is $13,069,750.
At the Council Meeting held on October 8, 2018, the City Council approved the tax rate that funds a portion of the maintenance, operations, and debt service in the FY19 Budget. The adopted tax rate was maintained at the same tax rate as the previous four years: $0.742120/$100 valuation. This tax rate is lower than both the effective and rollback tax rates. On a home valued at $100,000, the average homeowner will pay around $697.96 in property taxes to the City of Nassau Bay. The FY19 Annual Budget funds a total of $3.05 million in capital projects. These projects include several improvements and rehabilitation projects to the water and wastewater system, stormwater drainage, street repair and improvements, park improvements, building improvements, and much more. For more information on the budget, tax rates, and upcoming capital projects, please visit our website at www.nassaubay.com/budget. Property Tax Revenue for Services - Fiscal Year 2019

NBHA REMINDER
The Nassau Bay Homes Association (NBHA) board would like to commend members on the improvements made to the neighborhood by the correction of deficient yard lights. The NBHA definition of a yard light states the light must be on a pole in the yard. The light should be equivalent to the lumens of a 60 watt light bulb with a white (3500K) color. NBHA would like to recommend that all members read and understand the deed restrictions as put forth in the document that pertains to your area of the Association. This document can be found on the NBHA website. The NBHA board is not considering another follow up survey for several months, but will be contacting deficient homeowners.
Fall Is In The Air + Opportunities Nothing like a fall wind to bring you outside. After humid, sweltering days of hibernating in the AC, it is wonderful just to be outside. Your flower beds, flower pots and even some bushes are looking a bit frightful – overgrown, all roots, or wilting. Where to begin? Start over, leave alone, or what? Your Garden Club is offering a hands-on opportunity for you to ask questions, as well as learn the how and why of fall gardening. On Saturday, November 10th, from 9:00am to 11:00am, Garden Club members will be on hand at Tranquility Arbor, located on the corner of Upper Bay Road and Martinique. This is not a formal workshop so stop by to ask questions, observe, or bring your trowel and clippers to learn hands-on techniques. After a bit of tweaking in the garden, fall is a wonderful time to just sit and relax! Garden Club Social & Program – November 13 at 9:30am Join the Garden Club on November 13, 2018 at 9:30am for a Social and 10:00am for the Garden Club Program. November's program will include creative designs for your home, now through the holidays. Members will learn ideas using items on hand, using greenery from your own gardens, and how to “pop” it with flair! Garden Club meeting to follow the program. All residents are invited to come have a cup of coffee, taste some homemade goodies with your neighbors, and enjoy learning new seasonal ideas. Happy Gardening! Arbor Day Ceremony – November 15 @ 9:30am The Nassau Bay Garden Club invites you to attend its Arbor Day Ceremony on November 15th at 10:00am in Howard Ward Park. Club members will meet at the gazebo to acknowledge the planting of two bottle brush plants in the park. Children from St. Thomas School will be a part of the celebration, helping to make it a very happy event.

COMMUNITY IN SCHOOLS
YOU can help! Nassau Bay is now a proud sponsor of Space Center Intermediate in efforts with Communities in Schools. Through this program, citizens can help meet the needs of at-risk students by donating needed time or volunteering. Currently Space Center Intermediate is in need of 5-6 digital, electric alarm clocks for children responsible for getting themselves to school, as well as healthy snacks. Additionally, they need anyone interested in volunteering for the upcoming Career Day or volunteering on campus as a mentor. A little bit of giving can make a HUGE difference in the life of an at-risk student. To coordinate pick up for donations or for more information about volunteering, please contact Ashley Graves at 281-330-5413 or by email at Ashley.Graves@nassaubay.com. REMEMBERING ISELA CASTILLO
On September 19, 2018 the Nassau Bay City staff lost a great friend and colleague, Isela Castillo, the City’s Human Resources Administrator. Isela was with the City for over 5 years and handled all the HR activities as well as assisted with many City events. She planned elaborate Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas parties filled with decorations and party festivities for the employees. At the encouragement of several employees, she established the Nassau Bay cycling team and rode bikes with her coworkers in several large fundraisers. She was known among staff for her contagious laugh and sense of humor. Isela had the ability to connect with each person she encountered in a way that made them feel truly appreciated. She was incredibly generous with her time and resources in all her relationships and served as an inspiration for her coworkers and friends. Isela and her dazzling personality will be missed by all who knew and loved her. We offer our condolences to her family and all those who lost a true friend with her passing. We encourage all those who would like to honor her to ‘pay it forward’ with acts of kindness and generosity. Isela had planned to ride in the 2018 Galveston Bay Foundation Bike Around the Bay. Donations can still be made to the Galveston Bay Foundation in her memory by visiting www.nassaubay.com/biketeam.

HONORING DON & BETTE JOHNSON
At the October 8th City Council Meeting, Mayor Mark Denman proclaimed the day as "Don & Bette Johnson Day" in the City of Nassau Bay, honoring Don and Bette Johnson for their tireless public service over the years. Don and Bette have lived in Nassau Bay for over 40 years, and will be moving to College Station, Texas to be closer to family. Don served as Mayor from 1994-1996 and Bette served as Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem from 2002-2010. Additionally, Don served with the Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department as Fire Chief for many years, and later greatly contributed to the Nassau Bay Infrastructure Committee. Bette also contributed to Nassau Bay's public safety, previously serving in a leadership role with the Nassau Bay EMS Department. The City of Nassau Bay is so grateful for Don and Bette, exemplary citizens who have given so freely of their valuable time, energy and abilities. Their great impact on the City cannot be measured – both will be surely missed as they embark on their new journey in College Station!
