CLEAR CREEK & NASSAU BAY PENINSULA CLEANUP Clear Creek Environmental Foundation’s Annual Clear Creek & Nassau Bay Peninsula Cleanup will be held Saturday, February 11th. This cleanup is vital to keeping our waters and the peninsula a clean and safe place for people and wildlife. Each year, volunteers pick up tons of waste including everything from plastic bottles and paper to washing machines and abandoned boats. Please volunteer with us on February 11th for this year’s cleanup! No need to sign up in advance, just show up at the peninsula entrance gate to clean the peninsula or at the boat ramp to clean up Clear Creek. Nassau Bay Peninsula – Meet at 8:30am at the peninsula gate. Trash bags and bottled water will be provided, but please bring your own gloves and wear appropriate clothing and shoes for possible wet and muddy conditions. If later works better, come when you can, grab a trash bag at the entrance and strike out on your own. Clear Creek – Gather at the boat ramp at Highway 270 (Egret Bay Blvd) on the League City side at 8:00am.If you go to the Egret Bay ramp starting point, it is important to tell officials on-site that you want to go to Nassau Bay peninsula as not all boats will work that area. Cleanup usually lasts til 11:00-11:30am on the Peninsula and around noon from the boat ramp or until you get tired. All volunteers are greatly appreciated! If you can only work for an hour we would be very grateful. It is a great way to see our beautiful peninsula on a closeup basis. And we welcome a few volunteers with an ATV, SUV and/or truck to help transfer folks (no trash) back and forth. For those volunteers this is the only time each year citizens are allowed to drive on the peninsula. For more information contact Mayor Mark Denman, an active volunteer each year, by phone at 281.333.9633 or by e-mail at mayor@nassaubay.com.

FEMA FLOOD INSURANCE GARDEN CLUB NEWS We have received many calls from residents that have received a letter from FEMA about a revision to the Flood Insurance Rate Map and possible changes to your flood insurance rates.
We strongly suggest that to get the best rate for your property you should obtain a current elevation certificate on your property and take that certificate to your insurance company. Your insurance company will then be able to secure the best rate possible for your property. If you have additional questions, you can contact the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) at 1-800-638-6620.
STOP SIGN REMOVAL
Residents, this is a notification regarding the removal of a traffic control device on Point Lookout at the intersecting cross street of Kingstree Lane. There was only a southbound stop sign on Point Lookout but not a northbound stop sign which is confusing to motorists. Additionally, Point Lookout is a through street not requiring a stop sign. Therefore, we have removed the southbound stop sign at this location. The stop sign on Kingstree Lane is appropriate and will remain in place. We request that you exercise caution at the intersection and inform others of the removal of the stop sign. It should be noted that the City of Nassau Bay conforms to the State Highway Department's Manual and recommendations regarding traffic control points for the purpose of standardization and uniformity.
NO PARKING AREAS
Please note that on-street parking is no longer allowed per City Ordinance on the following streets. "No Parking" signs can be seen at these locations. • Cul-de-sac on Surf Court south of Space Park Drive on both sides of the roadway. • Space Park Drive between NASA Parkway and Nassau Bay Drive on both sides of the roadway.

Bit by winter? Winter arrived and wreaked havoc on our gardens!Yes, it is hard to see your thriving, beautiful garden be reduced to a scary sight. This is a good time to take stock of what you really like in your garden. Any plants that are now soft, mushy, or smelling need to be removed right away. Resist the urge to trim plants with stems. Nassau Bay can have freezes as late as the middle of March. Trimming plants now might bring on new growth because of the warm temperatures that tend to follow the cold snaps. New growth will be vulnerable and could even cause the plant to die should a freeze occur. This is a good time to take stock of your gardens. It could also be a time to consider changing the plants to native plants. Native plants are indigenous to the area so should be hardy and need less water once established. A good resource book is Texas Native Plants by Sally & Andy Wasowski. There is also a Native Plant club at UHCL which meets the second Monday of the month. The next couple of months can be used to plan so when those beautiful plants start coming in at the nurseries you will know exactly which ones you want!
CODE ENFORCEMENT
The Code Enforcement Division is dedicated to maintaining a high standard of living for all citizens. We enforce codes in order to help ensure a safe and pleasant environment that also helps maintain the highest value for properties in Nassau Bay. The City staff is preparing a Code Enforcement Plan to be considered for adoption by City Council in February. The purpose of the plan is to establish a more proactive enforcement process and streamline procedures as much as possible. Stay tuned for more information.

SAFETY INFORMATION FROM NASSAU BAY POLICE DEPARTMENT
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Auto Burglary is a Crime of Opportunity Most auto thefts occur when valuables are left unattended and/ or unsecured in parking lots, on-street parking, and even in your driveway or in front of your home. Thieves typically seek privacy to commit theft. Virtually any article left in plain view is apt to be stolen. Most property that is stolen is left unattended or unlocked. Who provides the burglar with the opportunity? People provide burglars with the opportunity by leaving their vehicle unlocked or windows open. Most property stolen was left in plain view where anyone walking by the car can see it lying there.
EMS
What are their favorite targets? Anything of value, especially cash or loose change left in the console of the vehicle. Other common targets are wallets, purses, cell phones, laptops, and other electronic devices.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
When do auto burglaries occur? Most auto burglaries occur at night while the vehicle is parked outside the victim's residence. Some burglars also target vehicles that are parked in parking lots while their owners are at work, in class, or shopping. They know it will be a long time before the owner returns and the likelihood of being caught is low. What can I do to keep from being victim to auto burglary? Park your car in a garage or well-lit area away from places of concealment. Close all windows and lock all doors. Never hide a key in one of those magnetic key boxes, because if you can find it, so can a burglar. Take your valuables with you when you leave your car or lock them in the trunk out of sight.
The City of Nassau Bay's Municipal Court Administrator Stacy Froeschner has worked in municipal court for over 20 years and four of those years have been with Nassau Bay. Stacy has announced her retirement and her last day working with us will be on February 3, 2017. We are thankful for all she has done for the City and we wish her the best on her future endeavors. Please help us in congratulating Stacy on her retirement!
What should I do if I find my car has been burglarized? • If you notice suspicious persons or activities, report to police or property security immediately. Report anyone that is seen checking car door handles, looking in car windows or loitering in a parking lot or street parking. • If the burglary is in progress call 911. The call taker will ask you who you are and where you are calling from. Then they will ask you to describe the suspect (race, sex, height, weight, and clothing description). • If the burglary has already occurred, call 911. Do not get inside the car to see what is missing because you might destroy evidence needed to catch the burglar. Wait until Police Officers arrive on scene to examine the vehicle first.

Paws for a Cause will take place on Saturday, April 1st from 11am-3pm at the Nassau Bay Pavilion. Resident Gayle Nelson has orchestrated the event along with help from the Cul-de-sac Crew, CANBE, and other committee members. "I'm hoping for a lot of people to come out, have fun, and support a worthy cause in our community," said Nelson. "If you're an animal lover, you're gonna love this event!" An increasing number of animals have been taken into the shelter in recent years which has led to a need for greater support. Paws for a Cause is a chance for citizens, both two-legged and four-legged, to show their support while enjoying fun games, food, and friends. Attendance is free and tickets will be sold to participate in the numerous activities and food. Activities will include Musical Sit, Fetch, Catch, Costume Contest, silent auction, and local businesses that offer pet goods and services. Gloria Dei's Holy Smokers will prepare delicious food. Plus, citizens will be able to tour the animal shelter and register their pet with the City of Nassau Bay free of charge. Space City Big Band is generously donating their time & musical expertise and have vowed to get your toes tapping with musical entertainment from Glen Miller, Tony Dorset & other great big band hits! Most importantly, the Paws for a Cause committee is in NEED of SPONSORS for this event at all levels. If you or your business is interested in sponsoring this worthy cause, having a booth at the event, or making a tax deductible donation to the shelter, please contact Gayle at 832.419.7987 or ghnelson2016@gmail. com. All proceeds will benefit the Nassau Bay Animal Shelter. Mark your calendar for April 1st to attend this event with your cherished furry companions. Auto Burglary Prevention Tips • Remove visible items from your vehicle - If you leave items visible in your car, you are a target. Be aware that someone may be watching as you put a wallet, purse, or cell phone under your seat, especially at a gym or retail store. Take these items with you or secure them in your trunk. • Lock Up! Lock your vehicle and take your keys, even for quick errands. • Close all windows, including vent or wing windows and sunroofs and lock the trunk, hatchback or tailgate to block access into the vehicle. • Vehicle Alarms: Buy an alarm and use it! Many people believe that alarms no longer make a difference; however, they do remain an effective deterrent to a burglar. Remember, criminals are looking for the easy target. • Mail: Do not leave outgoing or incoming mail in your car, especially where visible. • Garage Door Opener: Avoid leaving this in your car if possible. • Avoid announcing your vacation on social media. It is easier than you think to look up your address. • Park Safely: At home, park in your garage or a well-lit area. Lock your car and garage doors. • Check to see that your vehicle is visible from pedestrian and vehicular traffic. • Record serial numbers and all other pertinent information such as make and model for electronic devices (GPS, laptops, tablets) and cell phones. • Familiarize yourself with the features of your devices, some have the ability to be tracked if stolen. Knowing how to activate this service quickly can greatly help law enforcement recover your property and arrest those responsible. Remember, you can help prevent auto burglaries by removing valuables from your vehicle and locking them in a safe place. Help us, help you to protect your property.
