ANNUAL PENINSULA CLEANUP

Clear Creek Environmental Foundation’s Annual Clear Creek and Nassau Bay Peninsula Cleanup will be held on Saturday, February 3rd. This cleanup is vital to keeping our waters and the peninsula a clean and safe place for people and wildlife. Each year, volunteers pick up tons of waste, including everything from plastic bottles and paper to washing machines and abandoned boats. Please volunteer with us on February 3rd for our annual cleanup! There is no need to sign up in advance; show up at the Nassau Bay peninsula entrance gate to clean the peninsula or at the League City boat ramp to clean up Clear Creek. Nassau Bay Peninsula – Meet at 8:30 am at the peninsula gate. Trash bags and bottled water will be provided, but please bring your own gloves and wear appropriate clothing and shoes for possible wet and muddy conditions. If later works better, you can join volunteers as your schedule allows, grab a trash bag at the entrance, and strike out independently. Clear Creek – Gather at the boat ramp at Highway 270 (Egret Bay Blvd) on the League City side at 8:00 am. If you go to the Egret Bay ramp starting point, it is essential to tell officials on-site that you want to go to the Nassau Bay peninsula as not all boats will work that area. Cleanup usually lasts until 11:30 am on the Peninsula and around noon from the boat ramp or until you get tired. If you can only work for an hour, we would be very grateful. It is a great way to see our beautiful peninsula ofromcclosebup. We also welcome a few volunteers with ATVs, golf carts, and trucks to help transfer volunteers (no trash) back and forth. For those volunteers, this is the only time citizens are allowed to drive on the peninsula. For more information, contact Michelle Weller at nbparksandrec@nassaubay.com.

MOON TREE LAUNCH SAVE THE DATE

The City of Nassau Bay is excited to announce a second Moon Tree event on Saturday, March 9, 2024. More information on the tree planting ceremony and dedications will be shared on the city’s website at www.nassaubay.com/MoonTree. Moon Tree Origin: Astronaut Stuart “Stu” Roosa carried 450 tree seeds during his Apollo 14 mission. After their return to earth, the seeds were planted, and they grew into normal trees named Moon Trees. Today, less than 70 Moon Trees remain. The Moon Tree Foundation perpetuates the legacy of the original Moon Trees.

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB A Legacy Brick is a great way to honor a family member, a friend, or a beloved pet. Bricks are installed at the Legacy Brick installation in David Braun Park on the sidewalk leading to the playground. A Legacy Bench is a lasting memorial to a family member, a friend, a community leader, an inspirational teacher, a great achievement, a beloved pet, an anniversary, or another important event. Express your appreciation with a Legacy Bench and help beautify Nassau Bay. Contact Ashley Graves (afgravesnb@gmail.com) if you have questions about Bricks, and Gayle Nelson (ghnelson2016@gmail.com ) with questions about Benches. Bricks and Benches can be ordered at NassauBayCANBE.org.

The Nassau Bay Garden Club February 13 meeting host Karolyn Gephart, Galveston County Master Gardener, will lead a discussion on container gardening in the Gulf Coast. Gephart is also an active member of the Heritage Gardeners of Friendswood. Topics covered will include environment planting, locations, plant categories, maintenance, benefits, and more. Gardening in containers may be a necessity for those who live in apartments or condos. In the outdoor landscape, a thoughtfully crafted container can serve as a focal point or as a wonderful accent in the home interior. Vegetable and herb gardening in containers can also be satisfying and very productive. Regardless of the goal, container gardening challenges the gardener in different ways than growing in the landscape. The February 13 meeting begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the meeting and program at 10 a.m. at the City Hall. The club’s largest event for the spring is Beautification Day, March 30. Volunteers are needed for that day. Anyone wanting to volunteer for Beautification Day may do so by calling event chair Diana Clark at 281-507-3387.

Whiskey is a sweet, young male dog who is eagerly waiting for a loving family to take him home. He has been tested for heartworm, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Whiskey has already learned a few commands, such as sit, shake, lay down, roll over and fetch. He loves playing with his best friend a border collie at the Animal Shelter. Also, he is already house trained, so he won't have accidents in the house. All he needs is a loving family to give him a forever home. If you're interested in adopting Whiskey or any other wonderful animal available for adoption, please reach out to the Animal Shelter at 832-5740877.
