CCEF ANNUAL NASSAU BAY PENINSULA CLEANUP

Clear Creek Environmental Foundation’s Annual Clear Creek and Nassau Bay Peninsula Cleanup will be held Saturday, February 24th. This cleanup is vital to keeping our waters and the peninsula a clean and safe place for people and wildlife. Each year, volunteers pick up tons of waste, including everything from plastic bottles and paper, to washing machines, and abandoned boats. Please volunteer with us on February 24th for this year’s cleanup! No need to sign up in advance, just show up at the Nassau Bay peninsula entrance gate to clean the peninsula or at the League City boat ramp to clean up Clear Creek. All volunteers are greatly appreciated! Nassau Bay Peninsula – Meet at 8:30am at the peninsula gate. Trash bags and bottled water will be provided, but please bring your own gloves and wear appropriate clothing and shoes for possible wet and muddy conditions. If later works better, you can join volunteers as your schedule allows, grab a trash bag at the entrance, and strike out on your own. Clear Creek – Gather at the boat ramp at Highway 270 (Egret Bay Blvd) on the League City side at 8:00am. If you go to the Egret Bay ramp starting point, it is important to tell officials on-site that you want to go to Nassau Bay peninsula as not all boats will work that area. Cleanup usually lasts until 11:30am on the Peninsula and around noon from the boat ramp, or until you get tired. If you can only work for an hour we would be very grateful. It is a great way to see our beautiful peninsula on a closeup basis. We also welcome a few volunteers with an ATV, SUV and/or truck to help transfer volunteers (no trash) back and forth. For those volunteers, this is the only time citizens are allowed to drive on the peninsula. For more information contact Mayor Mark Denman, an active volunteer each year, by phone at 281.333.9633 or by e-mail at mayor@nassaubay.com. NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB

Garden Club Spring 2018 Scholarship: To further horticultural and conservation education, as well as landscape design, the Nassau Bay Garden Club established an annual scholarship in 1979 which is awarded each year to a deserving student majoring in a horticultural related field. Scholarship applicants are required to be a college level junior or above, with a minimum 3.25 GPA. In October 2015 the scholarship was named the Ann Gay Scholarship Fund to honor Ann, a longtime resident and garden club member. This year’s Spring 2018 scholarship was awarded to Texas A & M College Station Senior Bree Salsbury from League City, Texas. Bree is a Horticulture and Plant and Environmental Soil Science major. Va Va Bloom! Spring Luncheon & Fashion Fundraiser: This year’s Luncheon and Fashion Fundraiser, Va Va Bloom!, will be held April 13, 2018 at Lakewood Yacht Club. Funds raised benefit the Ann Gay Scholarship Fund. The Club greatly appreciates any donations from our Bay Area businesses. It will be another spectacular event which you won’t want to miss! Tickets are $60.00 for individuals and $600.00 for a table. Please contact Betty Armstrong at rwarmstrong43@verizon.com for more information. February 13th Garden Club Social & Program: Come learn more from Houston Zoo Natural Encounters Supervisior Amanda Daly as she presents, “Pollinator Garden PathwaysBees, Butterflies and Other Animals." This program will give information on the plants that attract the pollinators that travel through Nassau Bay on their migration. Why is this important? The pollinator population is dwindling at a drastic rate. The Houston Zoo is researching how to help and has uncovered Nassau Bay as an important stop for these pollinators. Come join the Garden Club in the Council Chambers on February 13th at 9:30am for coffee, and 10:00am for the program, as we all learn more about how the Club and City can help! Garden Club Tip: SPRING, where is it? With two major freezes and two sprinklings of snow, one longs for green plants. Do not be tempted to trim your dead plants as it will make the plant think it is time to work on budding. Just wait until mid-March and then trim.

NASA PARKWAY LIGHTING The NASA Area Management District (NAMD) hopes you have noticed the new lighting of the City’s beautiful palm trees in the NASA Parkway esplanade. NAMD's mandate is to promote the economic vitality of the City’s commercial area, and the lighting program is intended to attract attention to the commercial area as a special place to do business and visit. The lights are energy-efficient LED fixtures that are digitally programmed to change color in sync with the 28-day lunar cycle, emphasizing Nassau Bay’s special connection to the Moon, space exploration, and the tides in our surrounding waters. Watch for the lighting to transition from indigo blue at the first day of the new moon to lighter blue, to cool white at the full moon, then gradually shifting back to indigo blue. In addition, the lighting will have seasonal color themes for Valentine’s Day (red, pink), the Fourth of July (red, white, blue), Halloween to Thanksgiving (yellow, orange) and the Christmas Holidays, including New Year’s (red, green, white). NAMD sincerely hopes Nassau Bay’s residents appreciate the new aesthetic contribution to the commercial area and the reinforcement of Nassau Bay’s image in the greater community as a great place to live, work, and play.
