Celebrate Independence Day at the Annual Parade & Fireworks Show!

Parade Starts @ 6:00pm

Begins at Gloria Dei goes down San Sebastian to Point Lookout to Kingstree to Martinique to Lake Nassau Park.

Pie Contest @ 6:15pm

This year's contest will be open to any pie! Peach, pumpkin, coconut, any pie your heart desires. Bake your favorite and bring it to the Lake Nassau Park by 6:15pm. Prizes will be awarded.

6:00 - 9:00pm

Music, food, and family fun activities at Lake Nassau Park.

Fireworks @ 9:00pm

The national non-profit organization KaBOOM!, in partnership with the Humana Foundation, has named the City of Nassau Bay a 2015 Playful City USA community for its efforts to provide children with access to a variety of safe opportunities for play. Nassau Bay is one of 19 cities in Texas and 241 communities nationwide to receive this designation.

The City’s most recent additions include: a Nature Trail on the peninsula, a dog park, and a boardwalk along Clear Creek. The City is currently working on improvements to Lake Nassau Park, including: adding new playground features, replacing the basketball pavilion roof, and renovating the restrooms.

Being active and enjoying the outdoors is important for all ages and we will continue to improve our parks and amenities to offer something for everyone to enjoy.

It's time to decorate your parade float, golf cart, bicycle, outfits, and join the parade! Anyone can be in the parade, no need to register, just show up at 5:15pm for lineup.

Each entry will be eligible to win a prize for the following Parade Award Categories: • Grand Prize - Best overall entry.

• R.O.C.K. in the USA Award - Entry with the best use of patriotic music.

• Spirit Award - Entry that displays enthusiasm and receives the best response from spectators.

• America's Red, White, & Blue Award - Entry with the best use of the American colors - red, white, and blue.

• Super Heroes Award - Entry that honors and shows support for military men and women

that have served our country.

BY THE NUMBERS POLICE The Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, or BAHEP, is a member-driven organization that provides the leadership to stimulate regional economic development and employment.

BAHEP recently named their conference room in honor of David Braun.

The plaque at the entrance to the David Braun Conference room states: "Remarkable for his dedication to his family, his work with the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, and his community, David gave 100 percent of his effort in all that he accomplished. His work on behalf of Citizens for Space Exploration Texas and BAHEP's Aerospace Advisory Committee was exemplary and will long be remembered. He was a friend to all he met and always had a smile for everyone. David will always remain a valuable part of the BAHEP family."

BIRDS Troy Bradfield, Nassau Bay Animal Control Officer, would like to acknowledge Dr. Nancy Adams of Pet Medical Center of Clear Lake, for all of the work she has done through the years for our animals.

Since September 27, 2011, Dr. Adams and her staff have made special arrangements with our animal shelter to ensure all animals are properly vaccinated and spayed or neutered for adoptions.

In April 2015, when the City seized 16 dogs, Dr. Nancy Adams and her staff went above and beyond to help with everything from vaccinations and temporary shelter assistance to collecting donations and even personally adopting several of the dogs.

We are proud to have such a committed veterinarian and her staff as our City’s Vet. She and her staff have shown true integrity with our animal’s well-being and have made sure our City’s shelter can be the very best in Texas.

St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School first graders found three baby birds blown from their nest after recent storms.

This is their story: “Last night there was a horrible thunderstorm with flashes of lightning. It was scary for us! We wondered how the birds survived all the rain and the noise. This afternoon, after a pizza and ice cream lunch, we had a first-hand look at just how the birds were affected by this storm. On our playground, we found two baby birds that had fallen from their nest. They did not survive. Then one person heard a tiny cheep and discovered a frightened little survivor on the ground under a tree. We went on a hunt for something soft and warm to keep the baby bird safe. We found moss and a sand pail to make a new nest for our rescued friend. We named her Angel Elizabeth.”

After residing in the first grade room for the afternoon, the surviving baby bird was taken to a bird rescue shelter to be nursed and to eventually be released to the wild. Angel Elizabeth chirped all the way!

SUMMER CAMPS Art of the Dragon, Sticky, Squishy Science, It’s a Bug’s Life, Camp Invention, Manners Matter are some of the week-long summer camps available at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School in Nassau Bay for 2nd through 6th grades. They will delve into their imaginations with dragons; learn about the world of slime, goop and gak; and build their own racing cart or video game. Whether you sign up for just the morning, just the afternoon, or all day sessions, your child will come home with lots of stories about the exciting times they had. Children in PreK-3 through 1st grade can be immersed in the lands of Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Hunters (Pirates), Teddy Bear Adventures, or Superheroes. They might experience a tea party with the Mad Hatter, dig for pirate treasure, or save the world as their favorite superhero; but whatever they are interested in, they will learn songs, play games, and make costumes. Why do some streets in Nassau Bay flood?

The streets were designed to serve as a secondary conveyor of storm water during extreme events so that the road floods instead of the houses and buildings located along the street. In virtually all curb and gutter streets, the streets are intended to flood for a given rainfall intensity and duration in order to provide protection to the adjacent properties.

Important Tips: * Protect your vehicle from water damage by keeping the vehicles parked in your garage or driveway. * If you see water covering a road, remember that it can be difficult/impossible to tell how deep the water is and if there is any structural damage to the roadway. TURN AROUND, DON"T DROWN. * If there is a storm drain inlet near your property, keep sticks, leaves, grass clippings, and other garbage out of the inlets. These can clog lines and cause backups into the street or in your home.

Take care of your pets, don't leave them in a hot car. Also, if you see animals left alone in a hot car, report it immediately.

A little preventive maintenance and monitoring can help keep your yard mosquito-free... or at least lessen the mosquito count.

Here are some simple steps that you should take to cut down on the mosquito population: Eliminate Standing Water • Regularly drain standing water, including water that collects in empty cans, buckets, bottles, old tires, toys, etc.

• Keep gutters clear of debris and standing water.

• Change water in pet dishes at least once a day.

• Maintain your backyard pool or hot tub and be sure someone takes care of it if you are out of town.

• Cover trash containers so they will not collect water.

• Repair leaking plumbing and outside faucets.

• Screen rain barrels and openings to water tank.

Plant Natural Mosquito-Repelling Plants • Visit a local garden supply store for mosquito-repelling plants like the citronella plant, catnip, and lavender.

Remove Yard Debris • Remove piles of leaves, branches, grass clippings, etc. as these can be popular breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

*Avoid bites - remember to wear mosquito repellent when spending time outdoors and re-apply throughout the day according to the label.
