ANNUAL FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION

D E L E C N A C

Celebrate Independence Day at the City of Nassau Bay's Annual Parade & Fireworks Show! It's time to get ready for this year's annual Fourth of July celebration! Activities will look a bit different all around, but we still want to have an opportunity to celebrate our community spirit and America's Independence! Water Wars – Noon to 2:00pm: Get your water guns and water hoses ready to soak your neighbors in this fun event. You don't need to register to participate in Water Wars! However, you do need to display a stars and stripes bandana on yourself, wagon or cart. You can pick up your free bandana at 18639 Prince William Ln from 9:00am to 10:30am on July 4th. Please be sure to look out for prominently displayed bandanas while participating in this fun event! Note – water balloons, cars, and trucks are NOT allowed. Parade @ 6:00pm: With COVID-19 considerations, there will not be public participation in this year’s Fourth of July parade. The parade will consist of our Nassau Bay first responders (Police, Fire, and EMS), City Council, and Public Works personnel. There will be three "mini" parades throughout the City that will begin at 6:00pm. Residents are invited to lineup in front of their homes to watch these parades. Please visit the City's website at www.nassaubay.com/specialevents for the new parade routes (and for all of the Fourth of July celebration information). Additionally, there will be no public activities at David Braun Park after the parade – this includes no food vendors, no live music, and no pie contest. Fireworks @ 9:00pm: Finish the evening celebrations with patriotic fireworks, which will be shot off at the end of the Nassau Bay peninsula (normally at the entrance of the peninsula). This is the same fireworks location as the Annual Boat Parade fireworks. Please note, David Braun Park will not be open to the public during the fireworks. Independence Day Spirit: We hope you will join us with your Fourth of July spirit! Let's see who can decorate their yards with the best RED + WHITE + BLUE!

ROSCOE LEE PAVILION DEDICATION

On Friday, June 12th, the City of Nassau Bay unveiled the dedication plaque for the Roscoe Lee Pavilion at David Braun Park. The pavilion is being dedicated to Roscoe Lee, a charter member of the Parks & Recreation Committee and Chairman of the Planning Commission, for his forty-plus years of service to the City of Nassau Bay. Congratulations, Roscoe and the Lee Family! "Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in." - Author unknown.

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB

Upcoming Garden Club Meetings: The Nassau Bay Garden Club is waiting, like everyone else, to see what the future holds for the fall gatherings and activities due to the COVID-19 virus. Please watch for any status updates here each month, and hopefully soon the Club will have good news to share. Garden Club Scholarship: The Garden Club is currently looking for a scholarship recipient for the fall. Remember the Club's home grown recipient of last year, Miss Emily Mahon? The Garden Club is so proud of all her accomplishments. The qualifications and application form can be found on the Club's website: www. nassaubaygc.org. If you know of any Texas college student who might be interested, please send an email with contact information, and the Club will pursue this candidate as soon as possible. There is a deadline, so please keep that in mind. Sharing Plants: Many of our members have way more plants than needed and are sharing! Please contact the Garden Club on Facebook or on their website if you are interested in anything from vegetables to flowers to bushes, and let us know what you're looking for — they will find it! For those of you who just can't get anything to grow, you can contact the Agrilife folks at soiltesting.tamu.edu and they will tell you how to collect a sample and where to send it. Cost is about $12, and it takes about 7-10 days to get the results. You will know what your soil needs: acid, minerals, compost, etc. Stay safe, keep your distance, wear a mask, and wash your hands. Happy Gardening!

SUMMER HEAT SAFETY TIPS

Whether you are playing or working outside this summer, you should take the following precautions to stay safe in the heat. Stay Informed: Monitor local weather forecasts to know what times you should avoid outdoor activities. Cover Up: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a wide-brim hat, and sunglasses that block UV rays. Use Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher): Put on sunscreen before you go outside, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours or more frequently if you are active and sweating or swimming. Limit Direct Exposure: UV rays are most intense between 10am-4pm. Limit time outdoors during these hours. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regardless of your activity level. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink more fluids. Stay away from beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large quantities of sugar. Check Family & Friends: Keep an eye on family members, friends, and neighbors. Pay close attention and check regularly on young children and those 65 or older. NEVER Leave Children or Pets in a Closed Car: In just a few minutes, temperatures can rise high enough inside the vehicle to hurt or kill your loved ones. Know the Signs & Symptoms of Heat Disorders: Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn, and heat rash are common conditions that you should be able to recognize and know what to do. Learn more about heat safety, including how to recognize and respond, at www.ready.gov/heat.

NASSAU BAY CODE OF ORDINANCES Did you know? The City of Nassau Bay's Charter with its Code of Ordinances are the two documents that dictate how the City operates. The Code of Ordinances contains the City's local laws, known as ordinances, which are enacted by our City Council. Under state law, the City of Nassau Bay is allowed to consolidate its rules, regulations and codes enacted into law into a logical and sequential code of ordinances. These two documents are referenced when clarifying roles, City processes and procedures. The City of Nassau Bay publishes its Charter and Code of Ordinances through a service called Municode. When City Council adopts a new ordinance, or a change is made to the City's Charter, the Code of Ordinance is updated to reflect these changes. You find the City's Charter and Code at www.nassaubay.com/charter.

COMPLETE THE 2020 CENSUS Have you completed the 2020 Census? For the first time, you can choose to respond to the census online—in addition to responding by phone or by mail. Counting everyone in the U.S. requires everyone’s help – and it starts with you and our Nassau Bay community responding to the 2020 Census. Currently Nassau Bay’s response rate is 56.1%, just lower than the State of Texas response rate. More people responding to the census means more opportunities to shape the future of Nassau Bay! Compared to surrounding cities, we know we can do better! Other cities like Friendswood 73.3%, League City 65.6%, and El Lago 65.2%, surpass Nassau Bay in responding to the 2020 Census (data as of June 18th). Visit my2020census.gov to respond now! It's safe, secure, and confidential.

HOME ELEVATION PROGRAM Nassau Bay's Home Elevation program elevates flood prone properties considered severe repetitive loss or repetitive loss. Elevations are performed to raise structures two feet above the proposed base flood elevation (BFE). Severe repetitive loss usually occurs when a home is built below BFE. Homes built prior to federal flood guidelines are especially susceptible to repetitive loss. In Nassau Bay, there are several homes on FEMA's severe repetitive loss list. Each of these homes needs to be elevated at least two feet above BFE in order to prevent future flooding and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claims. NFIP losses for homes in Nassau Bay have totaled nearly $41 million over the last thirteen years. Elevation of these properties will continue to benefit residents by reducing impacts of flood events and benefit the community from less economic impacts. Also elevated homes will produce less debris after a flood disaster, resulting in recovery cost savings and less impact on landfills. Mayor Mark Denman would like to express his appreciation to all those homeowners who have participated in the City's Home Elevation program. To participate in the program, homeowners pay 25%, 10%, or zero of the cost of elevation based on their FEMA loss designation. In addition, the homeowner is responsible for any HOA requirements or non-eligible work. This complex task requires a sizeable amount of financial support from the homeowner, not to mention time! Nassau Bay appreciates each homeowner's commitment to keeping Nassau Bay financially stable and selfsufficient. THANK YOU!
