HEAT SAFETY

Whether you are playing or working outside this summer, you should take the following precautions to stay safe in the heat. • Stay Informed: Monitor local weather forecasts to know what times you should avoid outdoor activities. • Cover Up: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a widebrim hat, and sunglasses that block UV rays. • Use Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher): Put on sunscreen before you go outside, (even on cloudy days) and reapply every two hours or more frequently if you are active and sweating or swimming. • Limit Direct Exposure: UV rays are most intense between 10am and 4pm. Limit time outdoors during these hours. • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regardless of your activity level. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink more fluids. Stay away from beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large quantities of sugar. • Check Family and Friends: Keep an eye on family members, friends, and neighbors. Pay close attention and check regularly on young children and those 65 or older. • NEVER Leave Children or Pets in a Closed Car: In just a few minutes, temperatures can rise high enough inside the vehicle to hurt or kill your loved ones. • Know the Signs & Symptoms of Heat Disorders: Heat Stroke, Heat Exhaustion, Heat Cramps, Sunburn, and Heat Rash are common conditions that you should be able to recognize and know what to do.

MOSQUITOS

It is that time of year when mosquitos flourish. Here are some simple and helpful tips on what you can do to help prevent mosquitos from transmitting disease and eliminate potential breeding locations in your home and yard. • Wear Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents. • Cover up with long-sleeved shirts and long pants. • Keep mosquitos out with air conditioning or window screens. • Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito times • At least weekly, empty or get rid of cans, buckets, old tires, pots, plant saucers and other containers that hold water. • Keep gutters clear of debris and standing water. • Remove standing water around structures and from flat roofs. • Change water in pet dishes daily. • Rinse and scrub vases and other indoor water containers weekly. • Change water in wading pools and birdbaths several times a week. • Maintain backyard pools or hot tubs. • Cover trash containers. • Water lawns and gardens carefully so water does not stand for several days. • Screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks or cisterns. • Treat front and back door areas of homes with residual insecticides if mosquitoes are abundant nearby. • If mosquito problems persist, consider pesticide applications for vegetation around the home.

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB Care Free Gardening - Really? Succulents are a great choice for container growing. Most are tough, drought tolerant and grow easily in a tight space with very little after-care. They’re also gorgeous plants with a sleek, modern and architectural look that you can play up or down using different container styles and plantings. You can try planting something unusual without big maintenance requirements by creating a succulent garden design. These water-wise plants boast a wide range of leaf colors and forms, from common cacti to lesser known succulents. Planting a succulent garden design is similar to creating a living sculpture, which is now being featured in some airports, restaurants and hotel lobbies. Succulents possess modified leaves designed to conserve water. Water-conserving leaves vary from leafless cactus spines to fat, water-filled paddles or fingers. Many succulents form a rosette of foliage, which makes an unusual textural addition to a garden.

To plant a succulent garden start with a container no deeper than 10 inches and that has a drainage hole. Drainage holes are necessary as more succulents are killed by over watering than any other reason. When preparing the container, fill it with a potting mix specifically for cactus and succulents. Not feeling quite so adventurous? Then try planting one cactus or succulent per pot. Plant three pots and group them for a stunning effect! Both inside and outside gardens grow best on the south or east side of your home - a bright location is a must. Once planted, water the new garden thoroughly. Then resist temptation to water again for several days (4-5) to one week. Water when the first inch of soil is very dry (almost powdery). Stick your finger up to the first knuckle in the soil to measure for one inch of dryness. If in doubt about the moisture level, wait another day or two. Keep your garden happy by adjusting the water as needed. Succulent gardening is yet another kind of gardening to have an easy, fun, care-free time experimenting with this summer. Happy Gardening!

Houston Methodist St. John Hospital is redeveloping the Nassau Bay Shopping Village, located adjacent to the hospital campus in the 18000 block of Upper Bay Road. The Hospital has demolished the unused portion to make way for new parking capacity for hospital staff. The project will also include the addition of green space and other landscaping elements to blend the new lot into the overall aesthetics of the remaining structures. The portions of the building remaining and the existing business tenants will remain. There are plans to eventually use the site for expansion, but the CEO of Houston Methodist St. John Hospital, Dan Newman, says that the planning and execution of a major building program could take up to a decade, and could even possibly include some associated retail space.
