CITY NEWS HAVE FUN & MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY In a recent meeting, City Manager Chris Reed referred to Nassau Bay’s Garden Club (NBGC) as “the soul of our city.” The Club has been around for 52 years and is still going strong and making an impact on our community. The Garden Club’s purpose is to encourage home gardening, promote and create a beautiful city, educate citizens, practice healthy horticulture practices, and conserve our world’s natural resources.

Garden Club Calendar

With the growing number of home gardeners and those interested in learning how to begin gardening, NBGC wants to help! There are many benefits to growing your own food and flowers, and it is great to experience the joy of creating a beautiful living space right outside your door.

All events held at Nassau Bay City Hall unless noted.

NBGC has many upcoming events featuring many talented professionals covering a variety of gardening topics. Whether you are a long-time gardener or are just interested in learning how to grow anything from beautiful flowers to a colorful vegetable garden.

“Four Photo-Shooting Techniques of Do Anh Tuan” with NBGC member and Master Photographer Peter Bowman.

Over the years, NBGC has installed and continue to maintain six neighborhood gardens for residents to enjoy: Swan Lagoon Butterfly Garden, Lake Nassau Park Reflection Garden, Upper Bay Circle Garden, Lake Nassau Park entrance, Bal Harbour Esplanade, and the very popular Tranquility Arbor in Ward Park. Every year on Arbor Day, they purchase and plant a tree in the city, and have done so for 51 years! NBGC also provides financial support to Armand Bayou Nature Center, welcome plants for new residents, horticulture scholarships, and assists with recycling and conservation resources. The Nassau Bay Garden Club invites you to join one of their upcoming events. Each event offers a great opportunity to learn something new, have fun, and to be part of a wonderful organization in Nassau Bay! For more information about upcoming events or how to get involved, please contact Cherry Nims: cherrynims@hotmail.com or 713-294-4268.

Nassau Bay VFD also wants to remind you to keep your family safe with a working smoke alarm in every bedroom. Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11pm and 7am, when most people are asleep? Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half!

BEHIND THE COMMUNITY SCENES SPOTLIGHT Nassau Bay Police Sgt. On September 15th, Nassau Bay City Hall helped set the scene for a movie! Director Clay Ayers led the cast and crew for a romantic drama, Illusions of Cyn.

Glenn Sharp received a nice surprise one evening in September when he stopped to get dinner. After he placed his order and went to pay, the cashier told him that this young man had already paid for him and wanted to thank him for his service.

"Kindness comes in all shapes and sizes, Owen just proved that. Thanks again Owen for supporting Law Enforcement Officers, because of you and your kindness it makes us realize that we do matter." -Sgt. Glenn Sharp.

Congratulations to Nassau Bay native, David Shawn McNamara for earning the rank of Eagle Scout! David's tenyear scouting career as a member of both Pack and Troop 848 at Clear Lake United Methodist Church took him on adventures in eight states and Canada.

We want to encourage more filmmakers to come to Nassau Bay and you can help! Do you own or represent a location in Nassau Bay that you would like to make available for filming? Let us know by emailing or calling Communications Director, Kristi Sykora at kristi.sykora@nassaubay. com or 281-336-6283.

For his Eagle Scout project, David built new swimmer starting blocks, new shelves for the concession stand, and repaired benches for the Nassau Bay Nauticats Swim Team where he has been a team member since childhood. Congrats David and Troop 848!
