C mpass Rose OCTOBER 2016
HALLOWEEN IN THE PARK National Night Out Tuesday, October 4, 2016 National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. It is intended to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are invested in the unity and quality of their communities. Groups organize block parties or cookouts and are visited by local emergency services and city dignitaries. Nassau Bay Police Officers and City Staff will make their rounds to visit each registered event location. Last year City Staff hosted a city-wide party, but that will not happen this year. We want to bring the parties back to the neighborhoods so there is a better opportunity for residents to meet those that live next to them. This also allows Police Officers and City Staff more time to spend visiting with the residents by going to each registered block party. The registration deadline has passed, but you can still contact us at 281.333.4211 ext. 2212 if you are hosting a party and we will do our best to stop by if time allows.

BIKE AROUND THE BAY
On October 15 & 16th, Team Nassau Bay will ride around Galveston Bay in the 10th annual Bike Around the Bay cycling event. We are riding to support the most productive bay in Texas that provides habitat for more than one-third of all threatened and endangered species, produces more oysters than any other body of water in the United States, and supports vital industries like agriculture, tourism, and more. You can help make a difference in preserving and protecting the Bay right in our own backyards by making a tax-deductible donation to our team's ride. Donations support the Galveston Bay Foundation which works with all Bay users to preserve the beauty, tranquility, and health of the bay. Join or support our team at www.nassaubay.com/biketeam

PROTECT THE WILDLIFE
Many people enjoy feeding wildlife because it allows them to have closer contact with the animals. Often they think they are helping the animals to survive by providing food, but the effects of this seemingly generous act can be very harmful. If you care about the animals, please stop feeding them. Wild animals, such as the ducks at Lake Nassau Park could live a much healthier life if they were not given bread and could feed on their natural diet found in their habitat. Food fed to animals by humans is often nutritionally inadequate and can cause health problems for the animals, especially when they are young and still developing. The animals also can begin to depend on humans for food and lose their fear of people and/or vehicles as you may have noticed at the park when the ducks waddle towards vehicles instead of away. Please help take care of our ducks and other wildlife in Nassau Bay by refraining from feeding them. Please inform and encourage others to stop feeding them so we can enjoy seeing them for years to come.

HOME & COMMERCIAL IMPROVEMENT INCENTIVES The City of Nassau Bay has launched new incentive programs to assist and encourage property owners to improve their home or retail building. Thinking about doing some work on your home? Homeowners who spend at least $20,000 on home improvements may be eligible to receive an incentive payment equivalent to 10 times the amount of their increased City property taxes. Note that home improvements funded by federal housing programs such as the FEMA Elevation Program are not eligible for the Nassau Bay Home Improvement Incentive Program. To participate, homeowners must submit a Home Improvement Incentive application and building permit application prior to improvements for City staff to review. If approved, homeowners must complete the improvements then submit evidence of their post-improvement City property tax payment. With final City approval, incentive payment will be issued to the homeowner. Homeowners must make their own decisions about what type of home improvements to make to their home. Consider neighborhood home values and projects that would add value to your home. Reaching out to real estate experts could also be beneficial. Some examples that might add value include: • Increasing the size of your home • Remodeling a bath, kitchen or other room • Replacing the exterior facade Retail building owners are eligible for a facade improvement grant. The goal of this program is to provide funding assistance to improve and rehabilitate commercial building facades in Nassau Bay. Eligible improvements include all costs directly attributable to the improvements of the principal [architectural, street-facing, front] facade or dual principal [building containing a facade facing one or more street sides] facade. Examples include: • Facade restoration • Window or door replacements, awnings • Primary sign (one primary sign allowed per building including window, awning, canopy, or directory) • Roof (partial replacement of deteriorated roofing material or feature) • Exterior painting • Other exterior storefront improvements including incidental improvements associated with achieving a completed project (may include: exterior cleaning, roof, signage or graphics, removal of old signs, awnings and other exterior clutter.) For more information, contact Assistant City Manager Mary Chambers at 281.333.4211.

TAKE CARE OF OUR WATER KINDNESS COUNTS The City of Nassau Bay is known as a boaters recreational paradise. On any given day, you will find boaters enjoying the bay with wake boarding, fishing, or just being out on the boat with friends and family enjoying the beautiful scenery.
To ensure our waters remain clean and free of debris, here are a few friendly tips from Nassau Bay's Public Works Department. • Contain your trash and do not let trash blow overboard, especially plastic bags. • Cigarette butts are also harmful to our fish and birds. • Prevent fuel spills by filling up to 90% in your fuel tanks in the summer, due to expansion. • Use phosphate free, biodegradable and nontoxic cleaners. • Never discharge raw sewage in the waters and use restrooms on shore when possible. • Protect sensitive habitat areas do not disturb wildlife. • Watch your wake - it can lead to shoreline erosion. We are all in this together, please be a responsible boater and do your part to take care of our beautiful community and waterways.
For those of us that know Sgt. Glenn Sharp, this simple act of kindness is no surprise. He is a great Sergeant and one of the most kind-hearted, caring individuals you will meet. On August 29th, a citizen witnessed one of these caring moments and shared this photo with the following text on facebook.
"This is Sgt Sharp of the Nassau Bay Police Department, one of the agencies that I dispatch for. This rainy morning down here on the gulf coast of Texas, I dispatched him out to check the welfare of a man at a gas station. Sharp found a homeless vet that had just been released from the hospital, no family or friends, nowhere to go. Upon deciding to transport him out of Nassau Bay city limits to a metro bus stop (final destination the shelter downtown), he noticed that this man's tennis shoes were worn down to his socks, so before making sure he caught that bus, Sgt Sharp bought this man some shoes. Share this post please! HELP ME GIVE THIS POLICE OFFICER THE RECOGNITION HE DESERVES. Lets over power the negativity that their field gains these days and share all of the heart warming moments and selfless decisions they make all the time."
Thank you Kathryn Hamm for sharing this act of kindness that you witnessed and encouraging support and recognition for police officers. Thank you Sgt. Sharp for being you and taking care of our community.
