NATIONAL NIGHT OUT TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5 National Night Out is designed to heighten crime/ drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

It is intended to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are invested in the unity and quality of their communities.

Groups organize block parties or cookouts and are visited by local emergency services and City dignitaries.

The Nassau Bay Police Department, the Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Nassau Bay EMS and City staff will make their rounds to visit each registered event location. We want to hold parties in the neighborhoods so there is a better opportunity for residents to meet those that live next to them. This also allows the City's first responders more time to spend visiting with the residents by going to each registered block party.

The City of Nassau Bay is excited to announce the return of Street Eatz, planned for Saturday, October 16 from 6-10PM in the Town Square. The event will include live music from The Stags and Bama Breeze, food trucks, beer and wine and lots of family-friendly fun. Just remember, BYOC – bring your own chair!

Please note: The City is continuing to monitor updates related to COVID-19. Attendees to Street Eatz will be encouraged to wear face masks/coverings and to maintain social distancing wherever possible. The City may cancel the event in the interest of public safety should the situation worsen, and will notify the public via social media in the event of a cancellation.

HALLOWEEN IN THE PARK - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23 The Special Events Committee is making plans for the City of Nassau Bay’s annual Halloween Carnival at David Braun Park on Saturday, October 23rd from 6-8PM. Come join the fun!

As in past years, there will be a costume contest. Start planning to dress up the family! Judging will begin at 6:45PM. Prizes will be awarded according to age groups, as in previous years. New this year - there will be a prize for the best group costume! So, bring the princesses, angels, and heroes and put on your best.

A hayride, games and a “trunk or treat trail” will thrill little ones.

The ever-popular DJ, haunted trail and campfire s'mores will round out the evening.

We are in need of volunteers to help run the carnival games and the haunted trail, so if your teen is in need of volunteer hours, please email staceyamdur@gmail.com. In addition, we are inviting local businesses to join in the trunk or treat fun.

KEEP NASSAU BAY BEAUTIFUL TO HOST "FALL SWEEP" - NOVEMBER 6 Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful will conduct a Fall Sweep on Saturday, November 6 from 8:30AM to 11:30AM, and all community members are encouraged to participate in the event.

According to Roscoe Lee, Chair of the Nassau Bay Parks Committee, the Fall Sweep will include projects in David Braun Park, Howard Ward Park and Swan Lagoon Park.

“We are very excited to bring together our City’s Parks Committee, the Nassau Bay Garden Club, and community volunteers for our ‘Fall Sweep’ event,” Lee said. “During the event, volunteers will tackle shoreline cleanup along Clear Creek, trim tree branches and shrubs, weed and mulch various areas, and complete other similar tasks.”

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB

Becky Kadel, President of the Nassau Bay Garden Club With fall upon us, most City yards need some weeding and refreshing. Residents can add fall color to yards with mums, cyclamen and snap dragons. Some vegetables can be planted for harvest in the late fall, like cilantro, decorative kale and late tomatoes. Club meetings have returned to the Council Chambers in City Hall. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month. A social time begins at 9:30 followed by a meeting at 10:00. The October meeting will be about edible gardening, presented by the Club's own member, P. J. Campagna. She is a fount of knowledge on everything that can be grown and harvested from a gardener's yard.

Come listen to her interesting talk on October 12. The Club is also participating in the citywide fall clean-up on Saturday, November 6. Come and join your neighbors for all of the Club’s activities.

NASSAU BAY HOMES ASSOCIATION Please be aware: The Nassau Bay Homes Association (NBHA) utilizes an Architectural Review Application (ARA) process to ensure “changes” made to homes are in compliance with the deed restrictions. All exterior changes including, but not limited to, new roof, exterior painting, replacement windows, siding/trim and yard lights are subject to the process. Also, additions of any and all structural changes and additions of garages, sheds, driveways, and pools must be in compliance.

Projects begun without an approved ARA on file will be required to stop work until the review process is complete, and fees may apply. The NBHA appreciates the homeowners’ support in maintaining the harmony of the neighborhood by utilizing the ARA process, as determined by the Deed Restrictions set forth by the developer. The ARA is required in addition to the City’s permitting process. The request form can be obtained at the NBHA office, or from the website, www.nassaubayhomes.org. We want to distribute volunteers among the work areas. Masks are optional, but we request that you work in small groups.”

NAUTICATS POINSETTIA FUNDRAISER OCTOBER 10-24 Nassau Bay Nauticat Poinsettia fundraiser returns! At the end of each swim season, the graduating Nauticat Seniors receive a scholarship from the team based on their hours of volunteer service and team membership. To fund these scholarships, the Nauticats are selling locally-grown red poinsettias – 6-inch pots in a red foil wrap - $12 check or cash and $13 credit.

Sale dates will be from October 10-24 with the pick-up date expected to be on November 30 in Nassau Bay – just in time for the holiday season. You can order from any Nauticat family or visit the Nauticats' home page at http://www.

WATER LINE REPAIRS: WHAT TO EXPECT

The City of Nassau Bay Animal Shelter is excited to introduce Koda, a seven-monthold male Staffordshire Terrier mix now available for adoption! Koda has been neutered, is current on all vaccinations and is microchipped. Koda is a very active, sweet dog that shows no aggression whatsoever.

He is good with cats and dogs alike!

With aging infrastructure, namely cast iron piping that does not flex like more modernized PVC water pipes, stress fractures and water breaks can happen.

This is especially true on hot days, when temperatures exceed 100 degrees.

When water leaks occur, the City is required by law to work with private contractors to locate underground utilities, such as electrical lines, gas lines, cable lines and fiberoptic lines. Once that work is completed, your Public Works Department crews can get to work.

With most water leaks, residents will immediately notice heavy equipment and emergency lights as the crew gets to work. Once the break has been located, crews will either place a clamp on the existing water line or prepare to install a new section of water line in order to complete the needed repairs. This work can take several hours, depending on a range of factors including the severity of the leak itself. Regardless, crews will remain on-site until the repair is completed and properly backfilled, even if this means working through the evening or into the early morning hours.

After the leak is fixed, crews will clean up the site, transport their equipment back to storage, and give the ground time to settle. This rest period prevents a low spot from forming on the property. After about two weeks, grass will be re-planted, and the site will look as good as new.

When a water leak occurs, our top priority is getting repairs completed quickly and efficiently, but we also prioritize communicating the leak to impacted residents. Citizens will receive a phone call or email from the Public Works Department, and information is also added to the City’s social media accounts.

CITY HOLDS SPECIAL GATHERING IN HONOR OF MARY CHAMBERS On September 20, the Nassau Bay City Council, City staff, Board and Commission members and other guests gathered at City Hall for a special retirement party for Assistant City Manager Mary Chambers.

Mary joined the City of Nassau Bay in February 2011 as the Director of Community Development.

Her many achievements while working for the City include the production of the 2020 Comprehensive Plan. Mary, you will be sincerely missed!

FY 2021-22 BUDGET APPROVED During their September 13 meeting, the Nassau Bay City Council approved the Fiscal Year 2021-22 annual budget.

Following the anticipated approval of the FY 2021-22 tax rate in late September, a full article on the budget will appear in the November 2021 Compass Rose.
