NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
What is National Night Out? National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. It is intended to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are invested in the unity and quality of their communities. Groups organize block parties or cookouts and are visited by local emergency services and city dignitaries. Nassau Bay Police Officers and City Staff will make their rounds to visit each registered event location. Last year City Staff hosted a city-wide party, but the City will not host a party this year. We want to bring the parties back to the neighborhoods so there is a better opportunity for residents to meet those that live next to them. This also allows Police Officers and City Staff more time to spend visiting with the residents by going to each registered block party. When is it? October 4, 2016 Where is it? TBD - Host your neighborhood block party and register it with Nassau Bay Police Department so we know where to go to visit you and your neighbors. How do I register my neighborhood block party? Submit a registration form found online at www.nassaubay.com or in-person at the Nassau Bay Police Department (1800 Space Park Drive, Suite 200). Questions? Call us at 281.333.4211 ext. 2212. GARDEN CLUB NEWS
The "dog days of summer" are supposed to end around the eleventh of August but this year they seem to be dragging right past that date. Hot, Hotter, Hottest! Try to think Cool & Refreshing... How about coming to the Nassau Bay Garden Club's first meeting on Tuesday, September 13th? Oh no! You think garden clubs are for elderly, silver hair ladies who totter in and gather to discuss the good old days? Then you better think again because this organization is certainly diverse! Sure there are some wonderful silver hair ladies - did you happen to see Joy Edwards, Jayne Samson and Sue Warters kicking up their very stylish heels on the runway at last year's Spring Fashion show and Luncheon? How about the 'Tweeners like Valerie Moses, Peter Bowman, Monica Colley, Beth Ann Maxwell, Shelia Self, Joyce Mayor, Marlys Collins, Susan Donchecz, Royce Walker, D'Lisa Johnston and Phyllis Rundhaug who could easily hire gardeners but instead are coming to garden club to find out information on all sorts of things of interest. For instance, if you are going to plant why not choose a plant that could help a vanishing pollinator? Next there are talented Thirty Somethings like Pam Phillips and Ashleigh Klug who balance families, jobs, daily commitments, and yet enjoy coming to meetings and then have fun digging in the dirt to plant and even trying some composting! No, you do not have to come to a garden club meeting to be a gardener. Yes, you can certainly google "the blue flower-what plant is it?" to find out which annual it is that you like in one of the many city gardens or you can come spend an enjoyable morning with a great group of individuals-the people who make Nassau Bay a fun place to live! So what are you waiting for? Drop on by! When: Tuesday, September 13, 2016 (2nd Tuesday of every month) Time: 9:30 - Social Program:10:00 State of Our City with Mayor Mark Denman & City Manager Jason Reynolds Lunch Bunch: location announced at meeting www.nassaubaygc.org

CITY STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Bryan Graham began his career in Law Enforcement with the Texas Department of Corrections in 1976. He went through Police Academy in 1981. Eager to learn, he arrived on his first day at the Academy wearing his uniform with his gun on his side and no badge. Bryan advised that “back in the day, that was how it was done in the Academy.” After graduating, he joined the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department where he served for 15 years and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1990. In 1996, Bryan decided that he needed a change and accepted a Patrol Officer position with the City of Nassau, where he later was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and has served for over 20 years. He will retire on September 8, 2016. Please join us to celebrate his retirement and thank him for his service on September 6, 2016 from 3-5pm at City Hall.
Meet the Cul-de-sac Crew: Terrell McMillan, Gayle Nelson, Barbara Poche, Becky Kadel, Donnie Dietz, Kay Hoffman and others. This wonderful group of civic minded citizens has been meeting at 18407 Kingstown Ct. since the mid-2000s. Although there is no weekly agenda, this group has discussions on all things Nassau Bay. Always neighborly, friendly and social, they welcome any NB citizen to join them on Tuesday evenings starting around 6:45pm (times and days vary in winter months). It is the perfect occasion to meet neighbors, build community relationships or just enjoy good company and watch the golf cart traffic roll by. A fantastic chance to share your opinions on everything from neighborhood changes, city council decisions and HOA issues to the city's cat and rat populations and parking problems. Yet this crew refuses to be restricted to just talk, they are putting themselves into action and encouraging others to do the same. Many in the gang have been attending the weekly coffee with the city manager, sitting in on city council meetings and participating in the fabulous classes of Nassau Bay 101. And most recently a breakfast was organized to honor our 43 extraordinary city employees on the morning of Thursday, August 18th. Inspiring and commendable, the Cul-de-sac Crew is representative of the active citizens that make Nassau Bay such a magnificent place to live. Please feel free to join them on Tuesday evenings or consider creating your own party of neighbors and citizens and become more involved in Nassau Bay, the more the merrier! For more information on the Cul-de-sac Crew please contact Terrell McMillan at (832) 428-7121 OR Gayle Nelson at (832) 419-7987 or backyardescape@aol.com Written By: Nassau Bay Resident, Ashley Graves

WATER CONSERVATION
During hot and dry months it is important to practice water conservation, but these conservation tips are great to put into use year-round in an effort to waste less water. • Fix leaky faucets and toilets. • Install aerators to cut in half the amount of water used by each faucet. • Install a water-efficient shower head. • Take shorter showers. • Replace older toilets with water-efficient models. • Water your yard thoroughly but only as needed, usually no more than one inch, once a week. • Water lawns in the early morning or late evening. • Position sprinklers so that they are not watering driveways and walkways. • Use drip irrigation for plants and gardens, water early in the morning to minimize evaporation. • Collect and use rainwater for lawn and garden. • Wash only full loads of laundry. • Invest in Energy Starqualified clothes washer. STREET PARKING INPUT
The second and final Street Parking Citizen Input Session will be held on Wednesday, September 21st from 2-8pm at City Hall. Residents and bussiness owners can stop by during that time to see and vote on the parking proposals. City staff held the first public input session on August 24th and the data gathered from that meeting along with staff research will be transformed into proposals that citizens can vote on at this second session. Then, staff will present the proposals and public opinion to City Council at the regularly scheduled Council Meeting on October 10th. In June, the Parking Task Force, a group of residents and councilmembers, researched and evaluated street parking throughout Nassau Bay. They presented their findings along with their proposed parking solution at the July City Council Meeting. The suggested parking solution was to implement an overnight street parking ban from 2:00-4:00am that garnered support and opposition from both residents and business owners. City Council responded to the feedback by assigning City staff the task of researching and developing multiple solutions that would address the parking concerns and issues. Once completed, staff would present their recommendations along with the task force’s proposal to City Council for review. Learn more about the Street Parking Input Sessions at www.nassaubay.com.
