STAY COOL

Take care of yourself, your family, friends, and neighbors during the hot weather months. • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. • Stay indoors during extreme heat and humidity and limit exposure to the sun. Wear a wide-brimmed hat if you will be out in the sun. • Dress in loose-fitting and light-weight clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays. • Avoid extreme temperature change. • Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals. • Never leave a person or an animal alone in an enclosed vehicle. • Keep shades or curtains closed during the heat of the day. • Purchase a fan, even if you have air conditioning, to keep the air circulating. • If you start to feel sick due to heat, seek medical help immediately. • Discuss heat safety precautions with members of your family and with your elderly loved ones and neighbors. • Frequently check on your elderly neighbors, friends, or loved ones who do not have air conditioning and those who spend much of their time alone. • Frequently check on your animals to ensure they are not suffering from the heat. Visit www.redcross.org for more information about recognizing heat-related illnesses like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. The more you know, the better you can protect yourself and your loved ones.
