ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Nassau Bay is seeing a great deal of economic development in the form of new businesses moving to the city as well as several existing businesses investing money in remodeling, renovating, and improving their properties. Economic development is vital to maintaining a healthy economy in order to have a healthy community. When existing businesses invest money it is a win-win for the business and our community. A look around town and you will see these projects underway and one that will soon begin.

IT'S TIME TO VOTE

Early Voting for the 2016 General Election will be held October 24th - November 4th. Nassau Bay Residents can participate in early voting at Freeman Branch Library (16616 Diana Lane, Houston, TX). Other voting locations and times can be found online at www.harrisvotes.com. Election Day is November 8, 2016 and will be held from 7:00am - 7:00pm at Nassau Bay City Hall (1800 Space Park Drive, Suite 200, Nassau Bay, TX). Please remember that you must show an approved form of photo ID at the polls. Approved Forms of Photo ID: • Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS • Texas personal identification card issued by DPS • Texas license to carry a handgun issued by DPS • United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph • United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph • United States passport If a voter is unable to obtain one of the following approved forms of photo ID and have a reasonable impediment or difficulty to obtain such identification, they have other options that can be viewed in detail online at www.VoteTexas.gov.

ANNUAL CITY BUDGET

At the Council Meeting held on September 12, 2016, the City Council approved the FY17 Annual Budget. This year’s General Fund (maintenance and operations) budget is $5,765,310 and the total budget for all funds is $15,081,490. At the Council Meeting held on October 17, 2016, the City Council approved the tax rate that funds a portion of the maintenance, operations, and debt service in the FY17 Budget. The adopted tax rate was maintained at the same tax rate as the previous two years: $0.742120/$100 valuation. This tax rate is lower than both the effective and rollback tax rates. On a home valued at $211,610, the average homeowner will pay around $1,533 in property taxes to the City of Nassau Bay. Property Tax Revenue for Services

GARDEN CLUB NEWS

Beautification Day Saturday, November 5th - 8:00am Fall is finally here and in Nassau Bay that can only mean that its time for the City's annual Beautification Day! This is the day when our citizens come out to spruce up the City for the coming season. If you have an hour or so then please join us at the Lake Nassau Pavillion at 8:00am for a quick continental breakfast before heading out to the gardens and other locations throughout Nassau Bay. Please wear work clothes and bring your garden tools (gloves, spade, trowel). Come by yourself or bring anyone who loves to garden! The FY17 Annual Budget funds a total of $3.7 million in capital projects. These projects include several improvements and rehabilitation projects to the water and wastewater system, stormwater drainage, street repair and improvements, lake dredging, park improvements, building improvements, a new Fire Station and much more. The detailed list of projects can be found in the budget and updates as these projects are underway will be in future newsletters and posted on the City's website. Mr. Jons is a national-award winner in the American Rose Society’s 2016 All-American Center Trials; he frequently directs workshops for fellow Master Gardeners and the public on many gardening subjects and was recently featured in Texas Gardener magazine We welcome everyone to join us for this unique workshop that teaches how to eliminate 80% of the space, work, weeds, water and waste of a typical garden. CITY STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Csilla Stiles just celebrated 7 years with the City of Nassau Bay, serving since 2009 as the Director of Finance. Csilla is responsible for a total budget of 15 Million Dollars and has managed to achieve the Government Finance Officers Association of Texas Budget Award for five consecutive years. The only years she did not receive the award were the years she did not compete for it. She recently tested and received her Certification as a Government Finance Officer, the highest achievement for a municipal Finance Director. Csilla supervises a staff of four but her philosophy of budgeting and spending is evident in all Departments. She is very team-oriented and supportive of the entire staff. Csilla is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association of Texas and Gulf Coast Chapter of Texas Women Leading Government where she serves as the Treasurer. She is proud graduate of Butler University where she earned her Bachelors Degree and in 2008 she earned her Masters Degree from the University of Houston.

TEAM NASSAU BAY

In October, Team Nassau Bay participated in the 10th Annual Bike Around the Bay! This two-day 170-mile ride around Galveston Bay supports the Galveston Bay Foundation and the great work they do to protect our bay. Finance Director Csilla Stiles and Human Resources Director Isella Castillo completed this event with their husbands.
