EDITORIAL At the beginning of the years 2000 Trail-running only involved a few enthusiasts. We, a group of 9 friends, could never have imagined how how the event would grow, when in October 2002 we registered the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® on the international calendars, even if we had powerful ingredients and a strong determination: To do the tour of Mont Blanc by leaving Chamonix to pass through 3 countries (France-Switzerland-Italy) before arriving in Chamonix without having turned around! This unique route has now become a grail shared by thousands of runners from 87 different countries. Today if trail-running is an archetypal discipline open to all and based on a pursuit of freedom, it is also the breath which moves closer to others, to fundamental human and sporting values… More than a simple race, the UTMB® is an event which attempts to create strong links with ALL the players (runners, 2000 volunteers, the 19 communes involved, partners, the media, those accompanying the runners and their entourage including those not present at the event (via LiveTrail and webTV….) The same story of passion and emotions shared by everybody throughout the year. This year, the event has taken the name of its key event : UTMB®. This name, already largely used in the community, allows each participant to say the they «were in the UTMB®» or «one day I will be in the UTMB®» for whichever race they feel comfortable with. We mobilise our energy to guarantee the quality of the event for all these players, (there are no limits to quality). All the stakes are to stay on the rails by keeping intact the human values which muster us together. Equity, respect for the environment, respect for others and oneself, solidarity, fair-play, lucidity: so many different values which are dear to us and which we would like to share. If the dimensions of the event have led us to become more professional in several areas, our passion and desire to advance are still intact and also include the associative hemisphere of organisation in different domains such as the environment, solidarity, health and the valorisation of the Pays du Mont-Blanc… For this several committees were created to discuss the problems and propose solutions intended not only for the improvement of the event but also to be widely shared. Working as a team is also the basis of the relationship which we construct with our partners as well as with our suppliers, because we are very eager to share the same vision of the event with them. Catherine and Michel Poletti.

AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE A MYTHICAL ROUTE IN THE HEART OF THE MONT-BLANC COUNTRY… From the top of its 4 810 m, the giant of the Alps dominates each bend of the paths and imposes upon each panorama… The Tour du Mont-Blanc is an exceptional route which owes its reputation to the surprising variety and beauty of its unrivalled landscapes. During the hours of the race, the immersion at the heart of the domes, needles and glaciers is like plunging in to an incomparable universe where the magic of the views bear the runners, gripped by the splendid beauty of the journey. As it is a true journey passing through three countries - France, Italy and Switzerland – connected around this fascinating sovereign massif.

… WHERE IT IS ALL ABOUT THE STORIES OF ENCOUNTERS The first encounter is that of each runner with themselves. How will they react to such a distance? Have they got the necessary mental and physical resources ? Will they be a finisher ? But all these doubts are without taking in to account all the others who come, as they do, to take part in this extraordinary adventure. All those unknowns with whom sincere links of friendships will be woven for an hour, a night or a lifetime, where each will help the other to accomplish their dream. And without also counting on the fervour of the public, volunteers, men and women who live on each side of the massif and who all give a little of their time, their warmth and their enthusiasm.
… WHERE THE WHOLE WORLD IS GIVEN A RENDEZVOUS With 87 countries present, coming from the 5 continents, the UTMB® is resolutely cosmopolitan. So by gathering the world community of trail-runners around a common largescale objective, the UTMB® has become a “unique” reference in the field of open country running. An event which offers an exceptional moment for sharing, a kind of "communion" between peoples who will incite and urge each other on.

AND WHERE ELITE AND AMATEUR RUNNERS MINGLE This global craze has not escaped the best runners in the world who make appointments to run each of the UTMB® races. Each year is the occasion to meet these UFOs, runners, elite, on an international scale, coming to try to climb the highest step of the podium. The same paths, same race, for each their own rhythm but all together. Athletes of international level are those runners whose ITRA* points are superior to 800 for men and 700 for women.
*ITRA - International Trail Running Association ITRA Cote (mark): An international performance index for everybody For each race, an ITRA mark is calculated on a base (1000) of the best theoretic performance. From this mark a performance index is determined and attributed to each runner who finishes their race, relating to their time. This performance index takes in to account the average of the five best results over a period of 36 months. To date the ITRA data lists 5300 races and more than 47000 runners.

2016 utmb® press book
HISTORY OF THE UTMB® PUNCTUATED BY THE INNOVATIVE IDEAS WHICH HAVE BEEN ORGANISED A PIONEERING RACE WHICH OPENED THE WAY THE BIRTH OF THE UTMB® At the beginning of the 2000s Trail-Running only concerned a few enthusiasts. In Chamonix, a group of nine friends shared the dream of doing the tour of Mont-Blanc starting from Chamonix, crossing through three countries (France - Italy and Switzerland) before returning to Chamonix without so much as turning back on themselves! Having registered the "International Ultra-Trail of the tour du Mont-Blanc" (original name in 2002) on all the international internet calendars in 2002, the organisers cherished the hope of having 300 participants. Without daring to imagine the success, and management difficulties, should there be 500 participants... In 2003, the first year, they attracted 711 trail-runners from 19 different countries to the starting line. Only three years later, in 2006, 3,400 requests for registration were registered for 2,500 places on the starting line, which tripled the number of runners in three years!
SO NECESSARY TO BE INNOVATIVE… Already a pioneer with the imagination and creation of such an ultra-endurance race, the organisation, concerned to with constant improvement since the first race, did not stop being innovative, anticipating and proposing new ideas to develop and structure trail-running. The UTMB® is a kind of think-tank, a laboratory of ideas taken up by a good number of other race-organisers.
A POINTS RACE : A QUESTION OF EXPERIENCE As much to control the number of registration requests as to guarantee runners' experience, from 2007, it was necessary to justify experience in 2 races of 50km or 1 race of 80km. In 2009 the experience was transformed in to qualifying points which had to be obtained by realising other races during the 2 years proceeding the race. From the 4 necessary points in 2009, 5 were required in 2011, 7 in 2013, 8 in 2015 and 9 for 2016. The points system evolved, for more information go to the website. Race evaluations and attribution of points are managed by the ITRA
A DRAW : THE FAIR CHOICE The number of participants per race was limited; in 2007 registration for the UTMB® was completed in 10 hours and in 28 for the CCC®. In 2008, the craze was even more marked, registration was complete in only 8 minutes ! So, in 2009 a system of preregistration followed by a draw was set-up which has been used each year since then.
OBLIGATORY EQUIPMENT : SAFETY AT PLAY The mountains set their own rules and man has to adapt to them. After a dantesque race (2010) the list of obligatory equipment, basic minimum refined from year to year, has been filled out with the introduction of specific gear adapted for mountain use. Checks have been increased , made randomly during the race, and have become systematic. Manufacturers hurried to produce a summer version of a waterproof jacket with a hood. List can be found here.
ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH : A CHOICE OF ACTIONS Whether regarding the environment, health or safety, the organisers have always been ahead and have known how to create structures capable of progressing their causes. As from 2006, the commission for the Environment has identified the risks engendered by the event, by producing a post-race report and suggesting concrete actions to protect the environment. In 2007, the medical commission began contributing, after each event, by reporting on the medical activity during the event and by piloting a health policy to advise the race directors on measures which should be taken concerning the possibility of a runner taking, or not, the start of a race in the case of doubtful a blood test. It validates research subjects and gives its advice about the projects.

The performance index takes in to account the average of the five best results over a period of 36 months. The ITRA's date base includes more than 7 718 race events and more than 652 000 runners. The UTMB® is one of the "series" races on the Ultra-Trail® World Tour, the circuit which contains the most beautiful races in the world! The Ultra-Trail® World Tour is an international ultra-endurance circuit founded in 2013 and which, today, groups together 18 races of which 6 are “Futures” which have been included for 2016 ! TheUltra-Trail® World Tour races represent all the diversity of trailrunning races. From the gold-searchers route, to the crossing of an island or desert, while passing by the mountainous landscape of the Alps or the beaches of Hong-Kong, each kilometre run has a particular sense, leaving the trail-runner's imagination to run free. www.ultratrail-worldtour.com By introducing numerous actions in all domains of the discipline, the UTMB® was very often a fore-runner…

HISTORY OF THE LAST 13 YEARS 2003 Sherpa for a first
For this first year, runners may chose to stop the race and be classified at Courmayeur, Champex, or push on to Chamonix. In Dantesque conditions (rain, cold and hail), the Nepalese Dawa Sherpa and the American Krissy Moehl are winners of the complete tour which only 67 runners manage to complete.
2005 Christophe Jacquerod wins the 3rd event. Following the example of the winners of the first 2 races, the Swiss man is one of the big characters of the time. For the women, we discover the British Elisabeth Hawker, who today holds the record in all categories for podium places (6) for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®.
2006
Vincent Delebarre is the new winner of the UTMB®. He gives the Chamonix Valley the pleasure of seeing a “local boy” on the highest step. He becomes the Valley’s running club’s first trainer and introduces the pleasures of trail-running to numerous members. The Swiss woman Colette Borcard adds the UTMB® to her list of wins.
Capricious weather conditions It is not yet raining when the runners set off at 18:30… But the perturbation evolves faster than expected: torrents overflow and stone falls render the mountain impractical. The race is stopped. After a second start, the next day, from Courmayeur, the winning duo are British : Jezz Bragg and Lizzy Hawker. Xavier Thévenard and Maud Giraud dominate the CCC®. The TDS® is cancelled.
2012
Once again excruciating weather creates dantesque conditions (snow, cold, hail...) without hope of improving. An alternative route in France is organised during Thursday night (110km with 5600m ascent). It is almost night when the pack set out and it is still night when François D’Haene (FR) crosses the finishing line in Chamonix. Less than 2 hours later, another victory for Lizzy Hawker. The CCC® takes place in extremely rough conditions and sees victories for Tofol Castaner Bernat (ESP) with 42 minutes advance on his adversary and Ellie Greenwood (UK). In the TDS®, the victories were for Dawa Sherpa (Népal) and Agnès Hervé (FR).
2013
Relentless weather conditions…
2008
After a perfect management of his race which left him kilometres in the lead, the victory of the Italian, Marco Olmo, made an impression because of his age (58). One could think therefore that this is a sport reserved for the “over 40s”. As for the women, it was the French lady, Karine Herry, who won after a great race. Meanwhile, for the 1st CCC® Corinne Favre stole the title for 1st woman and 1st overall.
The weather conditions “forbid” access to Italy
2011
The weather (again) obliges the organisers to delay the start to 23:00 and to lengthen the race in order that it can “pass”. At mid-way the race leaders: 3 Spaniards Jornet, Karrera and Heras, and Sébastien Chaigneau from the Haute Savoie, are not going to let go until Martigny. Kilian escapes to pass the the finishing line alone. For the women, «Queen» Elisabeth Hawker has her 4th victory while in the CCC® Emmanuel Gault and Virginie Covignon (FR) celebrate. The TDS® is won by Franck Bussière (FR) and Jolanda Linschooten (NL).
This year is marked by record temperatures (28° to 30°C). Everybody waits to see Kilian Jornet who confirms his domination and easily takes possession of the top step. For her 2nd participation, a 2nd victory for Krissy Moehl. The CCC® allows the Swiss Jean-Yves Rey and the French Chantal Bègue to share the top of the podium. Patrick Bohard (FR) and Fernanda Maciel (ESP) win the 1st TDS®.
In the lead until la Fouly… Nicolas Mermoud let go of the reins after Champex and Marco Olmo’s inexorable regularity gave him, at 59, his 2nd UTMB® victory. As for the women, Nikki Kimball is the 2nd American to take the title of the event which is so different from those organised at the other side of the ocean. In the CCC® we see the 1st places on the podium being taken by Julien Chorier (FR) and Andrea Ursina (CH).

A wind of renewal
Profiting from exceptionally good weather conditions the Jurassien, Xavier Thévenard, and the Californian, Rory Bosio, gave flying performances, thwarting all the forecasts for the UTMB® at the same time terrifying the stop watches. Xavier confirmed his exceptional talents and stands out on his first attempt at the UTMB®, while Rory is the first woman to make the complete tour in less than 23 hours. While Catalonia and Spain celebrate the victories of Jordi Bes (CCC®) and Arnaud Julia Bonmati (TDS®) the French girls Caroline Chaverot (CCC®) and Nathalie Mauclair (TDS®) confirm an exceptional 2013 season.
The young take the lead
At just 20 years old, the youngest registered for the UTMB®, Kilian Jornet (ESP), wins the event after escaping from everybody at Les Contamines and opens the world of ra to the young runners. Lizzy Hawker climbs for the 2nd time on to the top step of the podium. In the CCC® Guillaume Lenormand (FR) and Lucie Colquoun (GB) occupy the first places.
2014
The birth of the little Helvetic sister
Rain and sunshine, the ingredients of an excellent “vintage”. François D’Haene (FR) and the American Rory Bosio cross, for the second time, the UTMB® finishing line in Chamonix as victors. The TDS® lets Xavier Thévenard have the success of a trio of wins climbing to the top step of the podium having conquered those of the CCC® (2010) then the UTMB® (2013), while Teresa Nimes Perez (ESP) claims the women’s 1st place. The CCC® sees Pau Bartolo (ESP) and Anne-Lise Rousset (FR) claiming their 1st places. As for the 1st year of the OCC, with an impressive line-up of athletes, is marked by the victories Nicolas Martin (FR) and Sonia Glarey (IT) of the Courmayeurs Trailers.
2015
Scorching weather
After a wet Monday for the start of the PTL®, all the other days of the week were marked by sunny and scorching weather unusual for this time of year. Xavier Thévenard (FR) took his 4th vistory at the event, his 2nd for the UTMB®. Nathalie Mauclair (FR), the world champion was on the top step of the women’s podium. As for the CCC®, it was the American, Zach Miller, who was on the top step alongside the New Zealander, Ruth Charlotte Croft. After having won the CCC® in 2014, the Spaniard Pau Bartolo was the winner of the 2015 TDS®, while the Swiss Andrea Huser won for the women. In the OCC, in which the world champion Sylvain Court participated, the victory went to Marc Pinsach Rubirola (ES) 3rd the year before, while Celia Chiron (FR), first participation in the event was 1st placed first for the women. The PTL®, after a serious drenching at the beginning of the race , was run under blue skies with temperatures varying between 28° and 33°. The thermometer dropped very little at night. 17 teams out of the 115 registered completed the totality of the route within the time.

2016 utmb® press book
PERSONALITIES REVEALED BY THE UTMB® The UTMB® is THE race where talents can be expressed and where only the best can win. This exceptional race, on the flanks of the highest peak in Europe, enthrals with its figures : 170 km, 10 000 m ascent and the emotions it arouses. The commitment that it requires in a high mountain environment bestows it with an aura, a global radiance. Indeed, its route requires all the qualities of a top athlete just as physical, as mental. Whether it be for the first (around 20 hours of racing) or the last ( 47 hours maximum), the importance for the victors of the UTMB®, by engaging on this initiatory path, is to return transformed in to a new man or woman, by being a Finisher. This source of inspiration is shared by the best trail-runners all over the planet. And if all those who cross the finishing line are heroes and enter in to the legend, the UTMB® has revealed outstanding personalities : Dawa Sherpa (NEP) : The charismatic one. By winning the first event in 2003, he is the original...the one with whom it all began and who remains a reference. His physical performance, kindness and openness to others, makes him an athlete apart. He is the hero of the mountain peoples, the sherpas.
Marco Olmo (ITA) : The patriarch of trail-running. Winner in 2006 and 2007, he is a visionary at the source of trail-running through his commitment and minimalism. For him, trail-running is a vocation where, with nothing, one can do a lot and make it last. Kilian Jornet (ESP) :The muse of a new generation of trail-runners. In 2008, when he crossed the UTMB® finishing line, few people in the trail-running world knew him, but he was known in the more confidential world of ski-mountaineering. He was the first young runner (20 years old) to shine in ultra-running, it is he who brought a modern air to trail-running : professionalism, training and communication. Xavier Thevenard (FRA) : The Little Prince of trail-running. He was discovered for the first time at the finish line of the CCC® in 2010. Full of talent, his freshness, kindness and simplicity made him an icon with the young generation of trail-runners. It is he who is popularly recognised for trail-running and the only athlete to have won the the UTMB® (2013, 2015), CCC® (2010), and the TDS® (2014). Elisabeth Hawker (UK) : The absolute queen ! A sincerely health passion for the mountains and nature, in an athlete's body. Her modesty, shyness and discretion makes her a trail-runner apart, recognised by everybody : she is the only athlete to have won the UTMB® five times – and to have been on the podium six times. Rory Bosio (USA) : The trail-running comet ! Through her cheerfulness, originality and spiritual approach to trail-running, she brings a "New Age" side to trail-running. A yoga fan, her philosophical and meditative approach, along with her exceptional physical qualities, make her a ambassador for the trail-running of tomorrow. (the only women to have been in the overall first 10 of the UTMB® with her 7th position in the general ranking in 2013)

2016 utmb® press book
EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE IN AN ADVENTURE SHARED runners « I like this idea of doing something which has nothing to do with ordinary life. » Since 2003 Philippe Plantié has only once been disloyal to the UTMB®… to run the TDS®. « Why do I go back there each year? To do better I think. For the community side of trail-running: even if one runs alone, this race is something extraordinary which one shares beforehand, when talking about it and during the race itself…» « If we remove a certain solitude, it is also tinged with pride... » « Running an Ultra isn't just a moment of privileged introspection. Running an ultra is also an adventure lying in wait for us, smiles which become detectable, encounters which mark us and even sometimes, encounters which change our lives... » Philippe journalist. « Each person manages the emotion of living one of the most incredible adventures of their lives and, at the same time, the fear of knowing whether we are capable of keeping going to the end. », Kilian Jornet in his book To Run or Die.
« What counts are the mountains, the pleasure of being there, but we are athletes and we push our limits. In the mountains you can do anything with the right equipment. To evolve alone, to be utterly involved, that's the true challenge. In trail-running like mountaineering, it's the brain which takes over when the body can't go on. But I told myself when I no longer wanted to take the risk in the mountains, I would stop mountaineering and take up trail-running. This is the mountains without the risk » Patricia Oudit quoting Ueli Steck for Jogging International. « Relief : these faces shining with happiness, tears of emotion which flow down cheeks chiseled by effort, the shouts of joy, the embraces, this brother/ sisterhood shared by friends and relations can only be moving , leaving spectators dumb confronted by so much simplicity, spontaneity and generosity contrasting to our world of paste and glitter » extract from de Un mythe, un territoire, des hommes by Olivier Bessy.
« In 2014, they diagnosed me with ankylosing spondylitis. I decided to make the illness known through a participative platform, I signed up for 3 stages of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour : The Transgrancanaria, the UTMB® and the Diagonale des Fous with my wife and children always by my side to support me during these long journeys. I finished the UTMB®, not the others : A Finisher after 42 hours of suffering but what happiness to cross the finishing line with my children and to have a few words from the announcer Ludo Collet. An extraordinary adventure which I will never forget! » Arnaud Freund, 40yrs old.

VOLUNTEERS There are 2000 around Mont Blanc! Another way to live the adventure! «Now we are 70 nurses and 1700 volunteers, including my wife and my son. The UTMB®, is a family history ! » An independent nurse from Voiron in Isère, Alain Viseux has not missed a single year of the Ultra-Trail®. With the pleasure, each summer, of meeting up again with the other volunteers. «Since 2003, nothing in the world would stop me taking my week of holidays to be there.»
supporters Throughout the race, families support the runners and share their joy and suffering, suspense and emotions : « Dad you go left, then you go straight on and then you are there… » shouts Marco who has come to support his father who has not yet reached lac Combal, let alone the middle of the race.
THE TERRITORIES Three mayors, three communes Vallorcine, Chamonix and Les Houches are involved in the event, they are united in the effort of together realising the 2015 OCC. A unique experience which testifies their double commitment to the UTMB®.

BEYOND SPORT
Research, innovation and involvement HEALTH POLICY The Health Policy, applying to the UTMB® events since 2009, has evolved this year with the help of the tools and supports set up by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA). Each runner who registers for one of the UTMB® events: • agrees to inform his “personal ITRA health page” of any information relative to the use of a prescription subject to a Therapeutic Use exemption (TUEhttp://www.wada-ama.org/ fr/Science-et-medecine/ AUT) or the taking of medicines and all other substances. • to agree to all urinary and/or blood and/or capillary sampling and the associated analyses which may be requested by the Organisation’s Medical Counsel and which may be consulted on their “personal page”. • to agree to answer any enquiries that the Organisation’s Medical Counsel may ask of them based on medical information. The Medical Counsel may suggest to the race jury that a runner is excluded from the race on medical grounds.
From the same ITRA personal health page each runner can consult all the services offered by SPORT Protect: (if necessary creating a link rather than developing it) • French medicines and their status with regard to the anti-doping legalisation • The 10 golden rules for protecting the integrity of competitions. • The food supplements, dietary products and cosmetics which conform the the anti-doping norm NF V94-001. • A plan «Sportif Info Service» where a pharmacist, a scientist, a quality engineer and a psychologist answer all questions. This action is not a substitute for current national or international regulations regarding the anti-doping fight but has the aim of strengthening the medical supervision desired by the Organisation. This action is driven by a Medical Counsel, within the organisation comprising uniquely of doctors, who are able to take advice from experts of their choice, and are charged with giving a medical opinion to the race jury on the medical state of participants.

Security Security : A PRIORITY The UTMB® races take place in the mountains, at altitudes oscillating between 1 000 and 2 600m. Throughout the last 10 years, the organisation has adapted and put into place a comprehensive prevention plan with information concerning the way in which to behave and evolving the list of obligatory equipment towards indispensable mountain equipment. The weather conditions of 2010 and 2011 reinforced the race direction in its decisions. First or last, strong or weaker, each runner must know how to run in complete safety and be equipped to wait for assistance. To ensure the security of the 7 000 runners, the organisation uses an important assistance/ rescue plan, which has put into place "L Event Locate Me", a smartphone application which allows the runner, if necessary, to call for assistance by sending the organisation a text message containing your race-bib number and GPS location, all the time remembering constantly that the first element of security for a trail-runner... is the trail-runner themselves. They must be aware that it is within experience, lucidity and the knowledge of the specificities of the UTMB® races that resides the greatest security for each. List of obligatory equipment here Like all outdoor activities, the UTMB® takes place outdoors and moreover in the mountains, it may be necessary to adapt the route according to the weather conditions or due to other blocking incidents, for reasons of safety or even for environmental reasons. If the security reasons are evident (risk of hypothermia, risk of getting lost, conditions too bad for assuring rescue...), it is less usual but nevertheless necessary to take in to account the environmental reasons; the frequentation of certain very water logged areas can provoke excessive erosion.
GUARANTEEING THE FORMAT OF THE RACES The organisation’s priority is to do all it can so that each race takes place as closely as possible to its original route! Plans have been made to guarantee the format and timings of each race, even in the case of very difficult weather conditions. The challenge is to avoid on one hand, that runners and volunteers, in conditions which are TOO bad, find themselves on sections at altitudes (+2 000m) during night which are inaccessible to rescue other than by foot, while on the other hand, respecting the distance, ascent/descent, the timings and the logistics. Some «simple « variations as well as complete alternative routes have been planned and are on-line on the race web-site. All the different scenarios have been envisaged to guarantee that each race can take place without putting the runners and volunteers into danger and with access for 4 wheel drive vehicles for rescue within an acceptable time (bad weather excludes helicopters).
These variations or alternative routes also allow the avoidance of fragile areas subject to serious erosion, if the ground is too waterlogged to support the passage of thousands of runners.

OutDry technology provides the finest waterproof/breathable gear for trail runners who need the best protection from wet weather. The OutDry waterproofing system is based on patented lamination processes that bond a waterproof, breathable membrane directly to the back side of a glove’s/shoe’s outermost layer, creating a one-piece component while sealing the stitching and any other potential water entry points. OutDry construction eliminate space between layers created by the standard bootie/bladder waterproof construction, where water penetration increase weight and reduce insulation. In apparel, the OutDry waterproof and breathable membrane is placed on the outside of the garment for permanent water repellency and durability. By putting an abrasion-resistant membrane on the outside in contact with the rain, there is no risk of the jacket “wetting out” like others do when their DWR wears off. OutDry makes also backpacks 100% waterproof by laminating a custom shaped membrane to the inside of the pack.
