Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. David Shepherd Interview

David gets a little bit frustrated for only being known as “the chap who has a print on the wall of Only Fools and Horses” (the much-loved iconic British sitcom). “When that programme started the BBC bought a print of mine called, Wise Old Elephant for the set. I’d sold the copyright years ago for £100.” Had he not sold the copyright it would have been a massive earner for him… “I have to tell people: ‘I do paint other things as well’”. I was fascinated to find out where his love of art all April 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living

started. He admits to being useless at school. But as one of the legendary headmasters of Stowe, which he attended as a boy, told him: “It’s not what you know, it’s what you are”. Growing up in the 1930s he had one ambition in life which was to be a game warden in Africa. “I’d never been abroad in my life, I had this arrogant idea I was god’s gift to the Kenyan National Park.” He flew out there only to be royally rejected. “I came home at 21, my world in ruins. Having failed to be a game warden I had two choices to become a bus driver or artist. I decided to go to Slade School of Fine Art and they slung me out there too”.

As promised, we continue our interview from last month of Hammerwood resident and world-renowned wildlife artist, David Shepherd. (For the first part of the interview visit our website to view the back issue online).

He was getting worried by this time. By sheer chance, fate or what have you David went to a cocktail party in Winchester (“I hate cocktail parties”, he said, “but I’m glad I went to this one”). There he met Robin Goodwin, a well-established professional artist who said, “I’m not going to teach you David, I don’t teach anybody. But bring me some of your work tomorrow, I’ll take a look”. The next day he was so horrified at David’s work he told him, “Anybody who paints as badly as that,

I’ve just got to teach”. In a true Henry-Higgins style project Robin Goodwin took on the teaching of David as a challenge. “He was brutal and taught me not only to be an artist but a business man”. Setting his work ethic out to David he told him, “you have to be up early on a Sunday morning, when it’s pitch black, even when it’s cold and raining, working ”. Which is exactly what David does to this day, “I’ve little choice…with commissions to fulfil up to 18 months ahead!” Entering the realm somewhat of ideologies David told me that he “can’t stand” the class system, that there’s still shreds of it around in the “stock-broker belt”. “Some of the finest friends I know are engine drivers I’ve met over the years. There are people ‘taking the train to Waterloo’, who wouldn’t dream of talking to people like that. It’s all wrong.” I asked him about the rumoured German bomb buried in Hammerwood.

As a child during World War II David grew up in North London, “we had all our windows blown out by the Germans”. The children had great excitement at seeing Spitfires & Hurricanes, not really realising, of course, that people were dying. “We used to swap bits of crashed aeroplanes at school”. “I’m passionately interested in archaeological digs and it’s a fact that a German aircraft blew up over Hammerwood and left it’s trail of wreckage all the way along. And I’ve done a bit of research, it crashed opposite the church. Through one person and then another I got to know this chap who’s now in his 80s, he showed me exactly where it is. There’s a professional archaeologist who’s possibly interested in digging it up”. With allegedly 2 unexploded bombs still on board, excavation would not be for the faint-hearted! We spoke again about conservation, “We are making such a mess of it (the

Self Portrait of David in his twenties

world).” David goes to schools for talks and asks children, “what’s the most dangerous animal in the world?” man being the answer. He believes conservation should be taught as a curriculum subject because it’s our future. “Children born today, when they are in their 80s, whatever is this planet going to be like?…” He admitted to almost being glad he won’t be around. I can tell that education is a huge part of the David Shepherd Foundation’s philosophy. David summarised, “I have a great debt of gratitude to wildlife so I must pay it back through my foundation. It’s wonderfully exciting to be able to put something back”.

Musingsabout

Ashdown Forest Photograph by Dave Brooker

Winslow Eliot. We are delighted to be able publish a piece about Ashdown Forest by author Winslow Eliot. Her novel Heaven Falls, has just won first place in the 2011 Reader Views Literary Awards, romance category. The summer I turned eleven we moved to Oak Tree Cottage on the edge of Ashdown Forest, in East Sussex. My parents chose this place to settle for several reasons, but for me the most important reason was that it was where A.A. Milne wrote Winnie the Pooh, and knowing that Christopher Robin (then about fifty years old) lived about five miles down the road.

tale countryside (I walked the mile to school, and weekends were spent mostly playing in the woods with friends or taking long solitary walks reciting poetry to myself), I felt more at home than I have ever felt before or since. All the familiar places you love in your favorite children’s story were there to be discovered and explored: Owl’s Tree, and the bridge where Pooh and Piglet played poohsticks, and Kanga’s sandy place, and the marshy place where Eeyore lived, which was carpeted with the most amazing bluebells in the spring. Best of all were the long walks to the Enchanted Place at the top of the forest, where we would picnic and lie on the pine needles and gaze at the sky.

I turned 18, when we sailed to the United States across the Atlantic on the Queen Elizabeth II. I left behind my friends, the boy I loved, the house of my dreams, and my childhood. Still I know this: wherever I go, and whatever happens to me on my way, “in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his Bear will always be playing.” For more information about Winslow Eliot & her publications visit: www.winsloweliot.com.

Ashdown Forest was also where W.B. Yeats honeymooned, and there was an unusual Waldorf school I attended through senior year, Michael Hall School, where I fell in love with writing and writers – most of them English.

Gardening Tips for April Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Vegetables

Vegetable planting should now be well under way if ground conditions permit. Sow summer cabbage and Brussel sprouts. Sweet corn can be sown in pots or cells for planting out late May. Second early potatoes can be planted at the start of the month and maincrop ones at the end of the month. Many vegetable crops can be sown as seed this month – check the instructions on the packet. Broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach are just a few ideas. Plant shallots, garlic and onion sets as well as asparagus crowns in friable well-drained soil.

Shrubs and Flowers

After a wet spell mulch around camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas to help conserve moisture to ensure good flowering next year. Tie in new shoots on clematis, jasmine and climbing and rambling roses. Rose shoots should be kept as level as possible to promote growth of side shoots . Sow sweet pea seeds outside or plant out those you have grown over winter. Put the climbing structure, either a wigwam of frame with netting, in place. Put two seeds or plants to each cane. If you have a light soil you can start making sowings of hardy annuals. Sow into straight seed drills as this makes it easier to take out any weeds that will grow. Once the flowers are in bloom you will not be able to see the rows. Put in supports for perennials to grow through before they become too large. Use frames sold for this purpose and once the plants mature they will be hidden by the foliage. The more tender plants that had their stems left on to protect the crowns such as fuchsias and penstemons can now be pruned taking care not to cut out any new growth. Keep dead heading daffodils and tulips taking off only the flower and seed head.

Fruit

Plant strawberry plants in planters or hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop this summer. Protect fruit trees and gooseberries with netting. The blossom of peach, nectarine and apricot trees should be protected from frost with a cover of fleece. Remove it in the daytime to allow insects to pollinate.

Bulbs

Protect new spring shoots from frosts and slugs.... Split clumps of fertiliser on beds and borders and erect supports for herbaceous plants such as peonies, delphiniums and oriental poppies that would otherwise flop. Carry on lifting and dividing overgrown clumps of perennials and split polyanthus plants once they have finished flowering. Sprinkle general purpose and unsprouted dahlia tubers Sow sweet peas outdoors (soak the seeds overnight to improve germination) and plant out those raised under cover.

I never thought that I could have lost my weight as easily as I did. Before doing this Programme, I was threatened with diabetes which is now a thing of the past – my blood sugar levels and cholesterol are now down. My doctor is very pleased with me! Since completing the programme I walked 30 miles in one week. Rachel’s weight loss programme has been great value for money. I have paid more at diet clubs than I have on this programme.
