Hate being overweight? Over three years ago, I was 5 stone overweight and felt continuously tired. I was faced with having to take medication for the rest of my life to handle my cholesterol as it was dangerously high. I was desperate to find a way to lose my weight.

May 10
Two of my friends had lost their weight with Rachel and I was very inspired by their results. Having tried so many different ways of losing weight, I felt going to Rachel was my last chance. I started my weight loss program in Jan 07 and within five months I had lost five stone. My cholesterol was then retested and much to my delight it was normal! This was achieved without having to take medication. My constant tiredness was replaced with an abundance of energy and other well being benefits. By following the simple guide lines for weight maintenance, it has been very easy to keep my weight off. I can only say that I am extremely happy to be the same size as I was when I finished the program three years ago. The support Rachel gives for weight loss and maintenance is very personal and motivating – it would be hard to find elsewhere. I have personally known at least 20 people who have lost their weight with Rachel and have all got excellent results. My health and well being has greatly improved. Shopping for clothes is a real pleasure now. It is wonderful to be finally free from dieting - very liberating!

The forest through an artist’s eyes
Article by Juliet Murray, Pastel Landscape Artist The first time I encountered Ashdown Forest was on a house hunting expedition in 1982. Despite only living in Copthorne I had never known of its existence and when I finally settled in Nutley it felt like being on holiday with stunning views from every window. In those days I wasn’t a painter, nor had any ambition to be one. 28 years later, I find myself nearing my 600th original pastel whilst still exploring new corners of the Forest which are demanding my attention. I’m not a person who can draw the same view over and over again August 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
nor do I spend weeks at a time on any particular image. I prefer to have the concept and then work doggedly at it until it is finished. The Forest is a continuously changing source of inspiration. The colours, shapes and textures vary with the seasons as well as with the day to day weather patterns. I will pick out a ray of sun on a patch of bracken or the trunk of a silver birch, cloud reflection in one of the pools, or the glimmer of yellow gorse weighted down after a heavy snowfall. These can be as artistically rewarding
as the large, far reaching views. Having the sheep and cattle grazing again is a wonderful bonus and they are always a rewarding subject. Everyone has their favourite place on the Forest . One of my recent limited editions, “Ellison’s Pond”, is a popular spot, especially with the many aquatic canines and their owners.

Kings Standing, whilst obviously the Pooh Bear places remain on constant demand. A surprising amount of my prints end up in Australia – they can’t resist the bluebells! As for my favourite place – sorry – not telling! Whilst working on Ashdown Forest I am continuously reminded of its history. The “bones “of the Forest have remained fairly constant over the decades but the surface is still evolving. It has seen activities such as iron working, stone quarrying, turf and bracken cutting and charcoal burning, to name just a few.
Elements of the past are everywhere and I sometimes look out over the long distance views and wonder how many people have done the same thing over the generations. I am aware that my paintings only record my particular interpretation of a place at a given point in time. However, I am delighted, and still a little bemused even after all these years, that they can bring so much happiness to so many people. I’m told it’s like having a little bit of the Forest at home as a constant reminder until your next visit …

shade of Scots and Corsican Pines, and lost too was much of the rare wildlife that would have flourished here.
Broadwater Warren is one of those hidden gems of the Weald. Barely a mile east of Groombridge, and within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it is a remnant of Waterdowne Forest, one of the Weald’s four large medieval forests. It is one of those few places in the South East where you can still lose yourself (either literally or metaphorically!). The word ‘forest’ is as we know it in ‘Ashdown Forest’, an ancient term meaning the August 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
king’s hunting grounds, a wild place of woods, heaths and glades where deer and boar would have roamed. Old maps show that it retained much of this character right up until the 20th century, an unfenced mosaic of habitats that was perfect training grounds for soldiers from Napoleonic times onwards. But the need for timber meant that much of the forest was then planted up with conifers. The heathlands and woodlands were lost under the dense
But the great thing about plantations, compared to when forests are ploughed up or built on, is that the seeds of many of the original plants can remain viable in the soil for 50 years or more. Remove the conifers and the ancient landscape can return. Broadwater Warren has the best potential for crucial heathland restoration on the entire Weald Forest Ridge, a habitat that may seem common to us here but is actually one of the rarest habitats on the planet. The site could still so easily have been lost. It became

earmarked to be turned into a landfill site in the 1990s, but the efforts of local people through the Groombridge & Eridge Alternatives to Rubbish campaign (GEAR) helped thwart such a move, and the RSPB were able to purchase the site in 2007. The three years since then have been all about research – finding out what is already there before the restoration starts so that nothing more is lost. There have been all sorts of surprises: plants species that hadn’t been seen for years; a host of archaeological finds; excellent populations of Dormice; and unexploded bombs. All need looking after in their own way! And now the restoration can
start. The 19th Century pond has already been repaired, and boardwalks have gone in across rare wet woodland habitats. A small car park is now in place on the Broadwater Forest Lane off the A26, and the RSPB has created an interpreted nature trail; they will follow that up with a heritage trail around some of the most fascinating archaeological features later this year. Over the next 10 years, bit by bit, the dense conifers will be removed or thinned, providing fuel for a local college and timber, and as the ancient woodlands and heathlands return, so the greater diversity of wildlife should reappear too.
Lottery Fund who helped fund the site’s purchase and continue to support the project through the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme. GrantScape have also been a major funder through their 2006 Biodiversity Challenge Fund, as has WARR Leader+ and GEAR. And our thanks too to those local people whose input has helped us shape the project. With everyone’s help, Broadwater Warren, which has such an amazing past, now has a future too.

Gardening Tips for AUGUST Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Annuals, Bulbs and Herbaceous
Remove fading and dead flowers on your annuals and herbaceous perennial plants. Removing the finished flowers will promote a longer flowering season. Perennial and biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden. Continue to plant container grown perennials. Always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of soil improver compost or well composted manure with your existing soil. Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.
Lawns
Shrubs
Summer flowering shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches.
Vegetables and Fruit
Now is the time to start your autumn and winter vegetables. Sow seeds of onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early in the month.
Grasses go dormant in times of drought, but will quickly return to life with the autumn rains so a brown lawn is not necessarily a dead lawn !! If a lush green lawn is important to you, and you don’t mind mowing, water it regularly, and deeply. If a water shortage is expected, or you hate tending to grass, you may choose to just let your lawn go dormant, and water it as seldom as once a month. Raise the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass cools the roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer. Keep an eye out for slug and snail damage and treat accordingly.
Roses
Bush roses can be pruned in late August to promote the most autumn blooms. Remove about a third of the vigorous growth. Any stems that cross each other should be removed, as well as those that are in the centre of the plant. Weak, spindly growth and any damaged by black spot or rust should also be removed. Continue feeding roses with a general rose fertilizer. Spray against pest and disease preferably with an organic product.
