Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Dear Residents Welcome to our first edition of the New Year. January’s a time for reflection and projection which is the choosen “flavour” of this issue. To start off with some good news, here is an email that recently came through: “We received a wonderful response following an article in Ashdown Forest Living about our charity Open Hands. This in turn has led to an increase in both an awareness of the current need in Romania, and many readers contacting us directly to offer their support. Thank you very much for all your help.” - Stephen Maughan, Open Hands Co-founder A message to all charities and those involved in charity fundraising: drop us a line in the new year so we can help you with promotion. Can’t wait for January to end? We look at some events that define this month. The lovely front cover of Crowborough Common in the snow was irresistible and shows us how we can enjoy the white stuff (useful, as it’s so tenacious these days…). See our article by Brendan Clegg. Another feature “Growing Food Locally,” with a Forest Row vibe to it, will hopefully filter that message out to other villages/towns around Ashdown Forest. Thank you for your support of our businesses, we hope you find useful services. Do keep the your feedback coming as it’s all welcome.

Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England at the age of 26. Elizabeth is the daughter of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. January certainly has the reputation as the month that we would rather forget or at least “be somewhere else”. The coldest month in the Northern Hemisphere and traditionally the “tax return month” leaves a sour taste in the mouth & a chill down your back at the thought. Going further in Ancient Roman times they did not even grace January & February with names as they were the “winter months” and March was the beginning of the year. So you could say it’s had a bit of a “tough time” as months go…

Growing Food Locally Once upon a time, most of our food was grown around us and the little extras, such as spices, were brought from afar. Nowadays we rely on a global food market that supplies us with fresh food from every season trucked and flown in from every corner of the planet delivered ‘just in time’ to supermarkets. But when snow covers the roads we see how quickly the shelves empty when deliveries are interupted. But snow is not the only threat we face. A Defra report on Food Security notes the “growing sense of the potential for disruption to domestic food supplies in an uncertain world” from international energy supply and price concerns to climate change. We should also add economic downturn to that list. The report notes that over the last decade there has been a decline in
self-sufficiency in the UK. As a result many people have already strated digging for their dinner and sales of vegetable seeds now outsell those of flowers. Around the country Transition groups, such as in Forest Row, are coming up with positive ways face up to these challenges. In the spring of 2009, Transition Forest Row published its local Food Guide, a directory of food producers in a 10 mile radius of Forest Row. Copies are still available and it can also be downloaded from the website. Their latest project is a DVD that explores some of the reasons why we need to start growing more food locally and some practical ways that we can get involved. As oil proces rise, long distance shipping will become probitively expensive
so we have to start supporting the farmers now that produce the food that people in the local area can consume. Even at the supermarket we can choose whether to buy a local apple or one from the other side of the world. Forest Row is blessed with two community supported farms, Tablehurst and Plaw Hatch as well as busy allotments. If the allotment waiting list is too long for you, then how about setting up a Garden Share with one of your neighbours. The benefits of getting kids and schools involved in growing food is also explored in the film. Retired teacher Monica Brown, filmed with a garden share, has this advice to anyone hesitating about growing some of their own veg: “Just try things out. It’s just really rewarding when all the vegetables on the plate you grew and you picked.” Transition Forest Row offer to show the film to school or community groups around Ashdown and lead a discussion about local food. Copies of the DVD are available free to schools or £5+p&p www.transitionforestrow.org www.growingfoodlocally.org.uk

“The Weald Forest Ridge, historically part of the Weald, has a scenic quality of its own. The high country, much of it between 400 and 600 feet above sea level, runs almost unbroken from the county boundary near Tunbridge Wells to Horsham, and includes the breezy, treeless heights of Ashdown Forest. It is famous for its far-ranging views South to the Downs and for its magnificent gardens like Wakehurst, and Nymans, in which the sandy soil is especially favourable to rhododendrons.” Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Area Neighbouring Urban Towns

Crouch, M, (1969) The Heritage of Sussex, Macdonald Just thirty miles south of London, it is possible to step back 600 years to a medieval landscape of rolling hills, abundant woodland and ancient routeways. The High Weald is a cultural landscape and recognised by its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Within the High Weald is the Weald Forest Ridge. In the past it is the area’s natural resources that have drawn people to the area; its sandrock has sheltered mesolithic hunters; its woodlands attracted AngloSaxon swineherders; its iron, water and trees combined to make it an industrial heartland in Roman and Tudor times. Today, the Weald Forest Ridge Partnership Scheme has around 30 projects running across the area, with opportunities to get involved in a whole range of countryside practice, many of these specifically aim to support local people in caring for their landscape. January 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
For the past two years, The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) has been helping groups of local people to set up conservation groups in the Weald Forest Ridge area, part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With local people now regularly working in and around Horsted Keynes, Forest Row, Hargate Forest in Tunbridge Wells, as well as nature reserves across the area; BTCV are calling for a few more local people to express their interest in setting up their own conservation group. Lynne Mulcarre, who helped to set up the Horsted Keynes group, said, “I heard about the scheme and although I had never done any practical countryside work before, I am a keen walker and thought it was a good opportunity to improve the footpaths and put something back for my community. We have been meeting regularly for 14 months now and it’s amazing how much
we’ve achieved – and how much fun we’ve had working with others from the village!” Other activities includes BTCV’s short-course training programme, where volunteers have successfully applied their skills to create countryside furniture for RSPB sites to enjoy. Warren Young, Weald Forest Ridge Officer for BTCV said, “We have one opportunity left to establish a local group in the area. For a willing group of people we can provide everything they need to get started in working to improve their local environment. Everyone we have worked with so far has found it to be a tremendously rewarding experience.” If you would like to know more please call the BTCV Weald Forest Community Officer Warren Young on 07740 899 678 or, e-mail w.young@btcv.org.uk

Can’t bear more snow? Don’t resist, just head to the slopes…
The second highest point in Sussex (beaten only by Ditching Beacon) Crowborough, “Scotland in Sussex”, boosts a home-grown “piste” on its common, for hours of winter fun... Brendan Clegg
Brendan Clegg tells us more. December’s heavy snows triggered an early start to one of Crowborough’s great traditions – tobogganing and skiing on the Common. There are several areas to where the young and fit flock when the snows come, but easily the best is the Ghyll slopes. This is also known as the fifth hole of the Crowborough Beacon golf course. The Ghyll slopes are quite a challenge and December’s piste was particularly fast. Toboggans are traditionally used by most people but more snowboards and skis are now to be seen. The main run comes to rather an abrupt finish if one is to avoid either ending up in the freezing Ghyll itself or coming into direct contact with a copse of trees! But those speeding down this slope soon learn how to throw themselves January 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
to one side for a spectacular but safe and happy finish. Crowborough Common itself, is one of Crowborough’s best kept secrets. Covering over 220 acres, this beautiful, ancient common forms the south-facing slope of the hilltop town. Part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Common is also the largest public recreation space within the town boundary.
8th Earl De La Warr. In 1895, the Common became the home of Crowborough Beacon Golf Club. Ramblers, dog-walkers and golfers now happily coexist there. For information about the Common, including a map, history, FAQs and more photographs, please visit crowboroughcommon.org.uk
From its highest point at Beacon Wood, 800 ft above sea level, there are majestic views across Ashdown Forest, the Weald to the South Downs and, on a fine day, glimpses of the English Channel. The earliest references to Crowborough Common date back to 1564 and ‘rights to air and exercise’ for the public were formalised in 1906 by the info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios. People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.
Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152
